THIS IS OUR

Imagine Roskilde Festival as a city. All the elements of a city are right here. There are the inhabitants – which is you and 129,999 fellow Roskilde-goers. Moreover, we have buildings and infrastructure including streets, water supply, sewers etc. The only thing that really sets this particular city apart from most other cities is the fact that Roskilde Festival is a temporary city. And it becomes the fourth largest in Denmark.

NEWS AT ROSKILDE FESTIVAL 2015

RISING UPSCALED AND ON THE MOVE

We’re moving Rising, our stage for upcoming acts. In 2015 you can find it at Camping West, just by CITYcentre West. We’re upgrading the stage as well. You will notice that it has a beautiful pyramid-like shape now. And that’s not all, we’re naming the whole area Rising and dedicating it as a place for music, theater, debates and much, much more. Read all about it on page 24.

NEW STAGE FOR APOLLO

PHOTO: TOBIAS NICOLAI

Our electronic stage Apollo also has a brand-new stage design. The 16 metres-tall cube-looking stage is put right in the middle of an area where everything is turned into a giant canvas filled with lights and projections at night. Chill out here during the day and expect a sensual explosion after nightfall.

STREET CITY EXPANDS

As always you can witness some of the world’s best skaters, bladers and bikers in Street City. You can also attend concerts at the Street City Stage. This year, Street City has merged with Game City, allowing you to can engage in a number of street games in a new and expanded area between camping areas B and C.

DEDICATED ZONE FOR GRAFFITI

Some of the very best graffiti painters in the world visit Roskilde Festival year after year. Now they’re getting a dedicated zone of their own where you can hang out between concerts. Look forward to a visual journey in colours and shapes – and a special 3D graffiti piece made of wood!

BIGGER WASTE EFFORT

Nobody likes garbage. Everyone wants it disposed of in a proper way. In 2015 we're focusing intensely on making that happen. We've set up 12 recycling stations with a waste sorting system in the camping area. Moreover, you will find even more trash cans all over. Let's make this a clean festival together!

TASTE THE SOUND IN ART ZONE

An international team of artists turn Art Zone, located just west of Orange Stage, into something very unique. You can test how sound tastes, experience gigantic steel wire sculptures and be a part of a social experiment.

CHAR | TY Did you know that Roskilde Festival is 100 % nonprofit? Every year we donate all of our profits to charity.

FROM ROSKILDE TO YOUTH SHELTER RG60

One of many donations from last year’s profit benefited the youth shelter RG60 (Rådmandsgade 60) in Copenhagen. RG60 houses 24 young homeless people, giving them a warm bed to sleep in. RG60 was given DKK 500,000 (approx €70,000) to continue their work helping the youngsters off the streets.

Since 1972 Roskilde Festival has donated more than DKK 225 million (approx. €30.2 million) to to humanitarian and cultural work benefiting children and young people around the world.

Your participation in Roskilde Festival – volunteers and paying Roskilde participants alike – help generate donations to places like RG60.

ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

OPENING IN 2018

At this very moment the architects COBE/MVRDV are working around the clock to create the best possible space for the højskole of the future. Next spring the first sod will be taken at Musicon, Roskilde.

H ØJ SKOLE Roskilde Festival has taken the initiative to build a brand-new højskole, which will open in 2018. The aim is that the students leave the højskole with the motivation, desire and ability to create value for others than themselves through volunteering, social and cultural work. The academic profile consists of the sum of the disciplines it takes to create a cultural and social event such as Roskilde Festival.

...H JSKOLE?

A højskole or, in English, folk high school is a boarding school, mainly for young adults. Folk high schools enlighten people and train for democracy, and they probably signify the single most original contribution Denmark has made to international thinking about education.

NEW ARCHITECTURE

BUILT ON COMMUNITY

Roskilde Festival Højskole is being built on the foundation of the values that create the community Roskilde Festival each summer. The strongest community is made of differences, and the best communities evolve when people live their passion – together!

ART ZONE

18

EXPLORE THE

ART zONE

It’s a well-known fact that the essence of Roskilde Festival is more than the music – it’s a community, a city and a state of mind; something unique for each participant. With Art Zone we’ve singled out a term, which is cent ral to our understanding of Roskilde Festival. We’ve let this specific term dictate a thematic foundation on which Art Zone is built. In 2015 we have chosen to focus on a very central experience for Roskilde Festival: The meeting. At Roskilde Festival we meet people, we meet understandings and attitudes towards various subjects. In Art Zone we present a wide range of international and Danish artists who have created works of art especially for Roskilde Festival.

FACTS ABOUT ART ZONE

—— Art Zone is located west of Orange Stage —— The size of Art Zone is about 6400 m2. That’s more than 3 times larger than Orange Stage!

19

ART ZONE

ARTISTS HUGE HUMAN BODIES

Ready to meet a giant? The Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi is famous for his large sculptures made of thick wire. In Art Zone he will create two large human bodies which appear violent, light and transparent at the same time. After nightfall the human bodies will be illuminated.

ROBBERT VAN DER HORST MARCOS ZOTES

All content in Art Zone is put into buildings made by Robbert van der Horst from Holland and Marcos Zotes from Iceland/Spain. The two artists first met at Roskilde Festival 2014. Since then they have teamed up and designed Art Zone in 2015. They have built several small and large pavilions across Art Zone. Light designer Jakob Kvist will make structures and sculptures appear in new ways once it gets dark.

THE HUMAN LIBR ARY

THE HUMAN LIBRARY

The Human Library is a place where you can borrow people representing groups in society that frequently face prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their beliefs, lifestyle, disability, social status, sexuality, employment or ethnic origin. The Human Library has about 40 'books' that you can borrow for 30-45 minutes at a time.

TELL ME YOUR NAME

Public information about you and me are reaped and sold by companies. How much information do you dare share publicly? The Danish artist group Unmake performs the social experiment 'Tell Me Your Name' focusing on big data and the data that is publicly available about you online.

GRAFFITI ON THE GRANDSTAND WALL

"Roskilde brings out the best in all of us."

It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? The Danish graffiti artist Dais certainly thinks so. He is decorating the grandstand wall in front of Orange Stage. The piece works like an transformative GIF animation changing the words in a stop-motion manner. What you see on the fence are static states from one word to the next – but the piece can be brought to life digitally.

THE GRAFFITI WORKSHOP

The graffiti workshop is a free activity for everyone. Whether you are new to the artform or a skilled artist already, the workshop is open for everyone to make their own graffiti and street art. The workshop provides free spray paint, masks and walls. All you need is your creativity and good spirit! Tip: Bring your camp, paint your camp logo and take a group photo. where to find the graffiti workshop sunday 28 june to tuesday 30 june street city wednesday 1 july to saturday 4 july graffiti zone

GRAFFITI SCULPTING IN 3D

22

GRAFFITI SCULPTING IN

3D Graffiti painting often simulates 3D. But Torontobased artist Kwest takes graffiti out of the walls and turns it into an actual sculpture. He is a key pioneer in fusing two art forms, graffiti and sculpture. And at Roskilde Festival the Canadian wants to make it massive! “The installation that I’m producing for Roskilde is my largest to date. The focus for my work has always been to trump the last thing I produced. So naturally, it is always getting bigger and more detailed,” he says.

ACCENTUATING THE ROSKILDE EXPERIENCE

Kwest’s sculpture is planned to be five metres tall and 30 metres wide. It is constructed with an approach very similar to painting a traditional wall piece – with main letter forms, abstract extensions and the same level of detail. Kwest believes that his work will accentuate the overall experience of Roskilde Festival by bringing a tangible element to the Graffiti Zone west of Arena.

Kwest, graffiti artist

n "Graffiti has always bee tive rea c of an action e xpr ession , which is what this festival represents to me.”

23

He wants the Roskilde audience to engage and interact with the piece, and he wants to change the way we look at dimension and space. “The main thing I want to give to the audience is a memory that will last a lifetime, or at least until they witness the next Kwest creation.”

WHO IS KWEST?

—— Kwest is from Toronto, Canada. —— He’s a self-taught carpenter, designer and builder. —— He’s been active since the early 90s painting well over 5000 individual works of art, using freight trains as his primary canvas. —— Kwest is a key pioneer in the fusion of graffiti and sculpture.

GRAFFITI SCULPTING IN 3D

“The size of the piece definitely works alongside the overall scale of the event, as it has to speak to the Roskilde patrons in a big way. The sculpture is an extension of an art movement, which is based on the idea of freedom to create and express. Graffiti to me has always been an action of creative expression, which is what this festival represents to me,” Kwest says.

YOUTH WITH PURPOSE

RISING

24

RISING 15 —

YOUTH OSE

WITH PURP

Through music, activities and workshops we focus on the most important generation for the future: the young generation. At Roskilde Festival you can do something to change the world and make a difference for yourself and for others. Rising 2015 consists of the new Rising stage and two giant mirror-covered tepees (we call them ‘Dreamcatchers’) as well as a wealth of activities. This year's theme is ‘youth with purpose’, which we will explore, design and play with. On the following pages you can read more about what Rising has to offer.

WHAT GOES ON... ORGASM WORKSHOP

Everything you never knew about your body is told through words and paint in the Dreamcatcher. Jealousy, good relationships, the body’s secrets and the universe of orgasms are on the agenda. Increase your potential, both for giving and receiving.

WINDOW TO THE WORLD

In a world changing at enormous speed we rarely set aside time for reflecting on how we want our surroundings to develop and how we can actively partake in this. Experience a world premiere of a brand-new Roskilde Festival format with live Skype interviews, international keynote speakers and amazing stories that will change your understanding of life.

25

CONVERSATION SALONS

In our conversation salons you can meet a selected group of people and through conversation become wiser on key themes. One day 40 bankers will be present. On the second day 40 IT professionals will talk about networking, security and identity, and on the third day 40 priests and imams will talk about family and gender. From Sunday to Tuesday between 11 and 12.

THE LITTLE BIG THINGS

Help us translate the UN’s new blueprint for sustainable development into real action and commitment. If goals should move from old men in suits to a realisable vision of the planet we want to inhabit in 2030, it requires ownership and action. It is our goal, our future – what would YOU do?

FACE YOUR FUTURE

What are the major challenges that concern young people and what will the future bring? Two mobile challenge vehicles drive around on site with the purpose of entering into dialogue with young people in order to generate ideas of how they can help each other to change and influence the world.

DESIGN YOUR LIFE

Tired of So-what-will-you-be-doing/working-onnext questions? Get “Talkative Ted” to shut up and become an architect of your own life using the design method ’Designing Your Life’. At Design Your Life we work with a mix of design thinking and methods taken from talent development in order to enable you to turbocharge your own life.

CLOSE BY

Close By are performances by Pernille Garde and Tin Soheili in cooperation with Copenhagen Music Theatre. The performance lasts 15 minutes and plays as many times as possible. You can leave your own story with Pernille by the Dreamcatcher. We guarantee an up-close and touching experience where brave festival-goers can look a stranger in the eye.

YOUTH WITH PURPOSE

COUCH SURFERS

Couch surfers are young people who don’t identify themselves as homeless. They need a place to stay for a while and end up living on their friends' sofas. These sofas are now at Roskilde Festival where you are invited to listen to their inhabitants’ radio stories from their temporary "homes". Find them all over the festival area from Sunday to Friday.

RISING

FACING EUROPE

Facing Europe is a photo exhibition by young asylum seekers. Through photos, text and personal dialogue you can hear from a person what it’s like to leave your home and navigate a new one. Meet them around the campsite from Sunday to Wednesday between 10 and 18.

RISING

26 In addition to the Late Night Cinema sessions the Rising stage also screens Nine Rocks: nine rocks

YOUTH WITH PURPOSE

director: tor nygård kolding 2015 This is a world premiere on a documentary about the accident at Roskilde Festival 2000. It will be screened on the very day that nine people died in front of Orange Stage, fifteen years ago.

CITIZENFOUR

LATE NIGHT CINEMA

Every Rising day will end with a different documentary film, handpicked by the programmers at CPH:DOX, Northern Europe's biggest documentary film festival. CPH:DOX has chosen three films about people who influence and help change the world for the better through their words and actions. citizenfour director: laura poitras 2014 Journalist Glenn Greenwald and a director travel to Hong Kong to meet the then still completely unknown Edward Snowden, who holds information that will change the world. banksy does new york director: chris moukarbel 2014 Director Chris Moukarbel takes a look at the sensational and notoriously mysterious artist known around the world as Banksy and his electrifying “31 works of art in 31 days” project in New York City. Presented in cooperation with DR. the emperor’s new clothes director: michael winterbottom 2015 Starring comedian, actor and activist Russell Brand, The Emperor’s New Clothes explores the growing disparity between economic classes through Brand’s usual satirical and critical approach.

Learn how your own life and your smartphone can be the starting point for a documentary and a voice in the public debate with hands-on training in video stories. Each day offers a new video challenge. Create a video story at the festival with your smartphone. The best will be put on the Rising screen and the filmmakers rewarded with tickets to CPH:DOX 2015.

YOUNG GENERATION MEETUP

We feel the pulse of the young generation. Join the meetup and participate in the debates. Through workshops we find out what a meaningful life is. Besides a free sandwich and beer or soda you can discuss topics such as boredom, doubt and social media. The meetup takes place Tuesday between 13 and 16. We’ll meet up at the Rising stage and together we’ll head for the festival site.

FRIENDSHIPS

Try a chit-chatter, jump in the bead bath or draw what you’re thinking. Come and laugh, relax and have deep conversations. Learn more about yourself, your friends, and maybe some people you did not know before you came here. We blend conversation topics with inspiring activities and alternative challenges. All you have to do is bring your curiosity and an open mind. We’re at CITYcentre East from Sunday to Saturday between 11 and 19.

Sports, art and music. They all meld together in Street City – a unique combination of performance, competitions and workshops. During the first four days of the festival, Street City offers an amazing variety of skaters, bladers, BMX riders, dancers, street artists, upcoming music acts, DJ sessions and street sports. Game City used to be an area of its own. This year it’s a part of Street City, which also means that the area has expanded. Throughout the festival Game, Hummel and Roskilde Festival will entertain you with football, basketball and volleyball. Everyone can participate in the games. You sign up in the Orange Karma area in Street City. Every goal scored in the tournaments will help support GAME's work with social change through youth-led street sports and culture.

D REYAM CIT

Dream City is your opportunity to create and build your own spot at Roskilde Festival. Dream City is an audience-driven area located at area H. We have space for approx. 4000 Roskilde Festival participants who want to be a part of this user-driven camp area.

Dream City is the only place at Roskilde Festival where you are allowed to use power tools and lawn mowers, so there are virtually no limits to what you can create or build – as long as it’s safe. Dream City is about co-creation, collaboration, sustainability – and great ideas. This is the place for those Roskilde participants who want to build something extraordinary and create something that elevates the experience for themselves and their fellow festival-goers. All the dreamers in Dream City have been preparing for this year’s festival since 21 March when Dream City 2015 launched.

Q+A

... WITH ANDERS WAHRÉN, HEAD OF PROGRAMMING

What does the music profile of Roskilde Festival look like in 2015? We present music from all over the genre map and in all shapes and sizes. Our wish is to keep surprising our audience by finding the acts of tomorrow. Genre-wise, we currently focus a bit on urban and electronic music and we also keep inviting the big world into Roskilde Festival. We take the so-called ‘world music’ more seriously than most other festivals do. The festival week has been moved back one day. How has this affected the task of putting together the programme? Wednesday has become available as a new ‘music day’, which has helped close deals with some acts. We also have more ‘slots’ available in the schedule, which means more live music. I love the fact that Roskilde now ends on a Saturday with music playing on all stages until late. Now that’s a party peak!

Every year brings about those special ‘only at Roskilde’ concert experiences. What can you recommend this year? Africa Express (see more on page 36) is literally this year’s biggest show. Over 4 hours of jamming with 100 musicians from Africa and the West united on stage. Damon Albarn is spearheading the thing! We also have a black metal night on the Pavilion stage Saturday night. Danish hip-hop acts Suspekt and Pede B & DJNoize will perform some custom-made, large-scale shows as well. I can also recommend Kronos Quartet. They’re a string quartet – extremely skilled musicians and very rare festival performers, just like German industrial legends Einstürzende Neubauten whom we are also looking forward to welcoming back at Roskilde. They build their own instruments and cherish noise and much as silence! You also present lots of music during the first days of the festival. In 2015 you have no less than three stages with upcoming talent. What’s the idea behind it? Talent is indeed the keyword. We’ve chosen to include Street City Stage as part of our ‘upcoming stages’ – the others being Rising and Apollo Countdown. To us it’s important to focus on the growth layer. We’ve seen many acts move on to great careers after having played here. The Minds of 99 is the prime example this year, moving from Rising to Orange Stage. If you were to pick three acts that a curious music fan should check out, who should it be? I’d recommend King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and not only because they have a name that is great to say out loud, but mainly because they are a truly great live band. Psychedelic rock from Australia. For the adventurous listeners I’d recommend Pharmakon, a one-woman noise project, harsh and beautiful! My third choice is Kate Tempest – she’s British and delivers a mix of spoken word and grime-ish hip-hop and she brings a great live band with her.

"To us it’s important to er. focus on the growth lay We’ve seen many acts s move on to great career e. after having played her the minds of 99 is the r, prime example this yea to ing Ris moving from Orange Stage."

AFRICA EXPRESS (ROKIA TRAORÉ AND DAMON ALBARN) · PHOTO: SIMON PHIPPS

90 people on stage encompassing a who's who of African and Western artists. Now, what’s this all about? Imagine a huge jam session going on much longer than any Duracell rabbit could. For five hours straight Africa Express will play until the sun comes up at a final bash on Arena stage Saturday 4 July.

37

Back in 2000 Damon Albarn teamed up with a group of Malian musicians and that planted the idea of Africa Express. His ambition was to inspire Western musicians to explore the depths of African music and to bring about some cultural interplay between the two. “It’s amazing to see someone, who has the world’s attention, aiming to present the hidden treasures of an ignored continent,” says Peter Hvalkof.

Nick Zinner, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

“A profound and lifealtering experience — every time”

See full list: roskil.de/africaexpress

JAMMING FAR INTO THE NIGHT

Back in 2008 Hvalkof went to London to experience Africa Express at first hand. They went on stage around 22. When Hvalkof left the venue at around 4 in the morning the collective was still going at it! “It was extraordinary! Flea and Johnny Marr playing together with Afel Bocoum and Rokia Traoré among many, many others. One big jam going on far into the night!” The collective will get together some days before the festival for a rehearsal jam. “Right now we don’t know who’s playing. But I can say that they are reaching out to some very interesting artists. Both acts already playing Roskilde Festival and acts being flown in. Whatever they are preparing for Roskilde Festival will be a fully unique gig. I couldn’t imagine a better way to close Roskilde 2015 in style!” says Peter Hvalkof.

AFRICA EXPRESS

But who’s behind Africa Express? According to member of Roskilde Festival’s booking committee Peter Hvalkof it’s a big collective line-up of global stars and it varies from show to show. The West meets Africa, so to speak. And it’s spearheaded by Damon Albarn.

NO1SE BECOMES L T R A NS C E ND E NTA WHEN

39 DID YOU KNOW THAT...?

—— Black metal started as a reaction to death metal being too polished —— Venom’s 1982 song “Black Metal” is one of the first to name-drop the genre

“It’s a massive wall of r sound that washes ove es om bec it and , you quite transcendental.”

We present a full evening dedicated to the bleak and aggressive black metal genre. Tombs, Deafheaven, Myrkur and Young and in the Way will paint Roskilde coal-black, Saturday from 21:00 until very late, on the Pavilion stage. Stefan Gejsing, member of the booking committee, informs us that metal fans at Roskilde have requested such thematic evenings: “Earlier we’ve presented a sludge metal night and a doom metal night. They have been mighty popular. Now it’s time for black metal. We see an increased interest in this sub-genre.” Peter Mesnickow, black metal enthusiast and label manager at Target/Mighty Music, agrees: “In recent years, there has really been a noticeable crossover wave with bands such as Deafheaven, Alcest and Sólstafir. The genre has found many new listeners. Now, you see hip-hop and indie fans adding black metal to their playlists. And you see a musician such as Ryan Adams enter the stage wearing an Emperor shirt – without being ironic about it!”

STEPPING INTO A HURRICANE

Experiencing black metal live is somewhat like stepping into a sonic hurricane. According to Stefan Gejsing it’s quite overwhelming: “It’s a massive wall of sound that washes over you, and it becomes quite transcendental.” Peter Mesnickow adds further to the experience: ”Black metal live is intense, hypnotising, atmospheric and at times theatrical. You can’t avoid being sucked into this parallel universe.” But what if you are a newcomer to black metal? What if you stumble over one of these concerts by chance? Gejsing suggests that you just have to give it time: “It can seem very violent and almost unwelcoming. But if you walk inside the tent and stay there, you may start appreciating the beauty of it and notice the traces of melody inside the storm.” black up your saturday night 21:00 tombs 22:30 deafheaven 00:00 myrkur 01:30 young and in the way Between the four concerts our gigantic Ghetto blaster will be blasting tunes right outside the Pavilion tent. THE R OSK 1LD E SONGBO0K Come sing your heart out! We’re clearing the Gloria stage for this very purpose – for all your voices, deep, high, shrill, loud, quiet ones alike. It’s the second year we’re doing this. We asked all you Roskilde-goers for input before the festival, and the songbook has been put together, based on your suggestions. The repertoire is made up of songs from all decades – classic songs filled with emotions, which are very recognisable and easy to sing along to. So, come on over and sing along with all the rest of us. Everyone’s invited – even if you think you can’t sing. The Roskilde Songbook is hosted by Danish musician and composer Frederik Thaae.

A SING-ALONG INVITATION THE ROSKILDE SONGBOOK

A SING-ALONG INVITATION

This year we’re trying to define the Roskilde songbook, which can – hopefully – start a new, strong tradition at Roskilde Festival.

In search of the best sound This year, 100 DTU students will descend on Roskilde Festival with around 20 projects, aimed at improving festival conditions even further. Since 2010, we have tested the sound levels at the festival. We measure acoustics in the tents, for example, as well as the distribution of sound pressure in the audience area and backstage. We do so in order to give all festival goers the best possible sound experience.

We also have projects featuring 3D printing, waste sorting, and analysis of water and electricity consumption; as well as a local smart grid driven by solar panels, an electric car, and a generator running on used frying oil. All aimed at improving the overall festival experience – and all powered by DTU students. Find out more about the projects in DTU’s TechLab between Pavillion and Avalon.

THE

GHETTOBLASTER THE DJs

We see lots of stereos in the camps at Roskilde Festival. But there's one Ghettoblaster that makes you look twice (or thrice) when you first encounter it. It's 12 metres long, 4 metres tall and can blast sound for a huge crowd. Moreover, it has a DJ platform on top. During Roskilde 2015 the ghettob laster tours (yep, it's mobile, too!) the festival area. And it packs an exciting DJ line-up.

Four DJs – DJ Emil Lange, Borneland, Ohboy and Tumult – promise a diverse party mix. They don’t believe in genres in this set, so expect everything from disco to hip-hop to hardstyle.

See the schedule on page 47 to find out where the Ghettoblaster is headed to next.

Copyflex is from the Yo Fok collective and one of the most popular Copenhagen DJs due to his ability to combine party music with creative experiments, homemade edits and mashups.

He has recently put out his debut album Lazarus. His Danish-language trap rap is embracing more than just boozing and skirt-chasing.

Get ready for some futuristic hip-hop from a talented Danish duo. Benjamin raps in a very laidback style as if he were chatting you up with his hazy, late-night voice. Albert’s productions are vivid yet melancholy and minimalistic with great inspiration from club music.

a moniker she uses when producing techno. She’s a self-described maker of ‘spacecraft techno’ and her music retains enough grit to avoid being sterile. Get in on this!

EERO JOHANNES FI

He creates synthetic funk mixed with bits of the Swedish-Finnish-based genre skweee, which includes synth leads, R&B rhythms and a funk bass line. Eero Johannes is also a drummer, a fact that is evident in his live performances, which are full of electronic drum pads, percussive playing and improvisation.

ELIAS SE

There are so many voices flying about at Roskilde Festival. But if you were to remember just one, it may be the one coming from Elias. The Swedish singer is just 19 years old and he is equipped with an impressive set of pipes. His baritone voice reaches so far down that it creates tremors in your very soul.

It’s all about the groove! Once October Dance gets a beat going and a simple bass line along with it everything sort of evolves from there with warm synthesizers and “a shit load of percussion”, as they put it. Imagine a meeting of LCD Soundsystem, Talking Heads and Arthur Russell.

BLACK BOOK LODGE DK

The guitars are tuned low and the tempo is kept slow. Welcome inside Black Book Lodge. It’s heavy, it’s groovy and it’s ready to rock your world. The Danish trio plays stoner rock. They love their riffs, and at the same time they dig a good melody.

BROEN NO

It’s no overstatement to say that you have never heard anything like Broen. Their experimental pop music is built on a cacophony of styles and sounds, but instead of crash-landing in chaos the band puts the musical chaos into system. We’ve been told they blow minds.

THE ATTIC SLEEPERS DK

DE UNDERJORDISKE DK

Danish psych rock is buzzing at the moment. De Underjordiske are one of the new front-runners. Their music has a very rocking edge, but they also like to keep things droning and hypnotically repetitive. Fans of The Black Angels should not miss out on this trip! BEYOND PINK

BEYOND PINK SE

Prepare for a punk bash with lots of attitude. Beyond Pink are Clara, Ida, Patricia, Tijana and Cajsa, and they play old-school punk rock that sounds as if it’s lifted from the golden age in the early 80s when the genre was toughened up and prefixed ‘hardcore’. Fast and aggressive!

THE ENTREPRENEURS DK

When this band started out their ambition was to play louder, faster and wilder. But The Entrepreneurs can do so much more than just make noise. They play a punkish kind of noise rock that is meant to be played at full volume. The music is full of melodic sensibilities in the vein of like-minded bands No Age and Japandroids.

Armed with a guitar Fay Wildhagen pens wonderful folk-pop songs that sound as if they were taken right out of the Norwegian fjell. Along with her five band members she wraps the tunes into a big, triumphant sound that will make it difficult for you to lower your arms again.

GOOMS DK

Everything’s possible, seems like a suitable mantra for Danish band Gooms. This is a band full of ideas – and every single one of them is crammed into their highly inventive, unpredictable weirdo-discopsych rock songbook. Fans of Deerhoof, Animal Collective, Mr. Bungle or Ariel Pink, pay attention.

HEY ELBOW SE

They took their name from an aerobics warm-up exercise, but their music isn’t your typical gym soundtrack (would be great, though!). Hey Elbow conjures up a kind of flickering, distortion-spiked dream music.

MOLLY

Three fourths of gooms have played at Roskilde Festival before in bands such as Figurines, Oh No Ono, and Twins Twins .

MOLLY DK

If anybody ever forgot what punked-up rock was all about, Molly is a proper reminder. The band channels all the quality stuff of alterna-rock from back when punk didn’t just mean playing fast. Hüsker Dü and D inos aur Jr are major sources of inspiration, we’re sure.

RISING

Norwegian singer Farao seems to appreciate a little rain. At least in her songs. She writes wonderfully heartfelt folk-pop tunes about love and loss. Her songs are acoustically based, soft and subdued and they ooze this special Scandinavian sound that everybody is talking about.

They all hail from different projects working on everything from hip-hop to folk music – but when the five musicians in Lowly get together they deliver a dreamy kind of synthed-up noise pop. YOUNG DINOSAUR DK

SLAUGHTER BEACH DK

This five-piece tests the boundaries of what guitar-based pop music can do. You can hear nods back to psych-pop bands from the 60s, but at the same time the band comes off as very modern. We’re sure that they own music by both The Zombies and The Flaming Lips.

TÅRN DK

Locked in somewhere between in-your-face punk and dirty garage rock (some call this aesthetic grunge), Yung kicks all kinds of conformity right in the groin. The four-piece knows how to deliver a no-frills, no-nonsense rock show full of distorted guitars and raspy vocals.

Despite having released only a couple of songs so far, Slaughter Beach’s Soundcloud account has brought their music far out into the world. Slaughter Beach digs a nostalgic and dreamy indie pop sound, so fans of both Real Estate and Beach House should start paying attention.

Odense-based Tårn plays guitar pop with heartfelt Danish lyrics and layers of shoegazer-y distortion added for good measure. Tårn’s sound has a blue layer atop the sun-kissed, dreamy melodies. This meeting of cheery and moody will suck you in between the guitar lines.

Furman channels everything into three-minute rock gems and has a bloody good time playing them. He and his well-playing backing band The Boy-Friends aim to give you a good time. The fun they’re having on stage will definitely rub off on all audience members.

FAT WHITE FAMILY UK

“We want to make your skin crawl,” British band Fat White Family has been quoted saying. They certainly have the recipe right: their lyrics are uncomfortable and they have a provocative stance. If anybody knows how to make the accordion sound cool it’s Ferro Gaita. The band hails from the island country of Cape Verde located in the central Atlantic Ocean. This seven-piece knocks out percussion-heavy, danceable funaná music. It’s akin to the popular Latin American cumbia genre but also its very own musical tradition. Traditionally, funaná was the medium of choice to express disgust at colonial rule – and until the country’s independence from Portugal in 1975, funaná as a form of music was officially banned.

The year of 2015 had barely started before an unanimous music world touted Father John Misty’s second album I Love You, Honeybear as an early ‘album of the year’ contender. Behind the moniker Father John Misty we find the freewheeling troubadour Josh Tillman. His productions are lush and pompous, channeling acts like label mate John Grant, 1970s-style Elton John and Californian soft rock from that same era in general. But Father John Misty is louder and more uninhibited and his music is full of raw emotional honesty.

Florence Welch has two defining characteristics: her red hair and her powerhouse voice. Well, actually, add a third one to that list: her melodramatic songs. Florence Welch is a hopeless romantic obsessed with bad romance and she puts that into songs written for a widescreen format. The tunes are centered in pop but unafraid of adding doses of soul, rock, gospel and blues. With three albums out and popularity growing she is ready to take on our Orange Stage.

Foxygen is the type of band that refuses to be pigeonholed. Excess is a part of their charm and their albums take us through rock history. When writing and recording, Foxygen is just a duo but on stage they expand to a 9-person band. Their live shows are notoriously chaotic. Mercurial front man Sam France throws himself around the stage like every song is his last, and the band seems to be evolving from blues-infused psychedelia to full-blown glam punk rock.

Future Brown is a pan-Atlantic electronic collective of true music fusionists. In their company it’s only natural to hear reggaeton meet grime, and cross-overs between bop and dancehall or kuduro. Earlier this year the collective put out their selftitled debut album (out on Warp), which shows us that sometimes the best music happens when experimentalists indulge their inner pop music fan. Their music already has already embraced film, art and fashion – so the future really seems bright for Future Brown’s dark club music.

This all-male (that’s right!) group heaps bucketfuls of distortion over a driving beat, sounding like chainsaws attacking pieces of metal, with singer Dara Kiely’s deadpanning Mark E. Smithstyle voice barely audible above it all. Until he screams, that is. It’s a thrilling and straight-out aggressive post-punk/no-wave-ish attack that will hit you hard! But underneath the noise there’s a kraut-like beat going on, often accompanied by a wonderful bass groove, so while coming at you they can make you move your feet as well.

Expect heavy clouds to gather over you when listening to Gretchen Peters in concert. She is a country musician out of Nashville, who writes songs that can really make you shed a tear. Earlier this year she put out the melancholic Blackbirds album, conceptually dealing with themes such as loss and death. A glorious collocation of noir themes tempered by gorgeous, slow-burning country rock and roots music. Gretchen Peters was just recently inducted into the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.

Hot Chip have perfected their alternative approach to fusing pop and dance music. Singles like “Over And Over”, “Ready for the Floor” and “I Feel Better” are like youth-defining moments, and they all have that staying effect. The gulf between Hot Chip’s recordings and stage show is stunningly wide. Utilising bass, guitar, drums, percussion and synths, the electronic sound of their records is turned into something organic in concert. There’s a certain melancholy seeping through Hot Chip‘s tunes, yet the whole thing has the energy of an ecstatic kraut-house rave.

Tempest started out when she was 16, rapping on night buses and pestering MCs to let her on the mic at raves. Kate Tempest is a highly skilled rapper – she balances a deft flow and a dense storytelling. Her producer is Dan Carey who delivers neatly sculpted club sounds for her seen-it-all drawl dotted with street slang reminiscing The Streets in his heyday.

Baton Rouge rapper Kevin Gates is quite the cult phenomenon. The 29-year-old has put out a number of mixtapes since 2012, which have earned him his reputation and lots of critical acclaim. That’s due to his ability to blend crucial storytelling with raw emotion and a club-ready punch. Kevin Gates may be coming off as a hardboiled gangster rapper (which he indeed is!), but the true triumphs in his tracks are his prodigious songwriting talent and the ragged emotional truths that live within his songs.

CARING ABOUT OUR

FO0D FOOD and BEVERAGES WITH CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT and FOOD SAFETY

If you feel that we care about the food at Roskilde Festival you are not mistaken. The way human beings produce, distribute and prepare food is probably the largest single contributor to climate change, both in the world in general and at a festival. That’s why we try to limit our impact on the environment. Roskilde Festival works with various contributors allowing us to vouch for the quality and environmental impact of their goods. Consequently, all dairy products at the festival are organic from the dairy Naturmælk, all the coffee sold is organic from Peter Larsen Coffee and the juice and wine available in every bar are also organic. Furthermore, we ask our food stalls to exclusively use organic pasta, rice, canned tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, carrots and lettuce in their meals. All food stalls are also required to have at least one vegetarian dish on their menus. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration is in charge of regulatory controls of hygiene in all food stalls, who also have their own sanitation controls as well as a programme to assist in the development of a good hygiene culture. This all sounds very reasonable. And in truth, we think it is.

A LARGE SELECTION

The approximately 150 food stalls and bars at the festival serve food and beverages, which cater to any taste, appetite or wallet while being mindful of the environment. You can choose between anything from the classic festival burger to an environmentally sustainable meal made from local produce. To wash it down you can get anything from beer and sodas to homemade milkshakes. We know there’s quite a difference in the size of wallets our guests bring to the festival. That’s why the selection of food and beverages must include offers for the student living on study grants as well as the more well-off individuals with the coin for something extra.

HOW DO WE CHOOSE OUR FOOD STALLS?

The festival has a group of volunteers who work all year selecting and maintaining relations to the food stalls. We have chosen the stalls for Roskilde Festival 2015 using six different criteria: —— Organics/Sustainability: In 2015 it is our goal that at least 45 % of our food is organic and to have at least 10 stalls that are more than 90 % organic. —— Price: Participants who get by on student support from the government must also be able to eat their fill. —— Quality: We would rather have freshly made food made from fresh produce than ready-to-serve, pre-cooked meals. —— Realism: We select stalls that we know will be able to handle the pressure of running a food stall at Roskilde Festival. —— Charity: We prefer stalls that use their profits for charitable purposes, i.e. sports or cultural associations. —— Originality: We select new stalls that distinguish themselves from the existing selection of stalls.

PHOTO: MARTIN KAUFMANN

But food at Roskilde is more than food stalls. There are plenty of culinary experiences to be had – food events and pop-up restaurants near the Gloria stage or the opportunity to cook your own wholly organic meal during the Foodjam event in CITYcentre East. Read more about this on the following pages.

CARING ABOUT OUR FOOD

Various associations and organisations run many of the food stalls, which ensure that profits benefit charitable purposes. Others are run by professional caterers who also contribute some of their profits to the overall charity supported by Roskilde Festival.

CREAM How does Roskilde Festival taste? Hansens Flødeis asked themselves this very question. This became the starting signal of a journey full of stirring, mixing and tasting towards finding this year’s Roskilde Festival ice cream. Ultimately, the festival-goers would decide which ice cream flavour was the right one. Hundreds of people carefully tasted and voted for two different ice cream ‘finalists’.

One flavour was Disco, a pomegranate sorbet with stardust. This ice cream could change into a refreshing and icy drink by adding a pinch of alcohol. The other flavour, and ultimately the winning ice cream, Rock, is an edgy orange ice cream with raw chocolate pieces. Rock will be sold as the official Roskilde Festival 2015 ice cream.

ORGANIC ATTENTION

Hansens Flødeis is a family business, which has produced ice cream for 92 years. Through generations Hansens has improved its methods and places great emphasis on the importance of sustainability, locality and organic principles. According to Mikkel Sander, sustainability manager at Roskilde Festival, this is exactly why Hansens is a textbook Roskilde Festival partnership. “Hansens Flødeis shares many of the same values with Roskilde Festival and does not compromise when it comes to its organic principles. The milk is sourced locally and they know all their ingredients, which makes their supply chain extremely transparent. It truly substantiates the sustainability strategy of Roskilde Festival.”

FOOD AWARDS ...FOR PREVENTING FOOD WASTE

Last year we joined forces with the Stop Wasting Food movement Denmark. We turned food waste into charity and ultimately we produced 27.5 tons of food which was given to the homeless. This particular project has just won a Green Operations Award at European Festival Awards.

... AND FOR PROVIDING GREAT FOOD

The Danish Academy for Gastronomy has awarded Roskilde Festival for the great food available at the festival. Roskilde Festival was given the award for making it possible to supply a lot of people with good food under circumstances that do not usually encourage good meals.

CHANGING THE WAY WE

E AT Environmental and social sustainability is important for Roskilde Festival. This also applies to food and beverages.

OUR INITIATIVES REDUCING FOOD WASTAGE

Working with the non-profit organisation Stop Wasting Food we collect hygienically safe and usable produce and distribute it among shelters for the homeless and refugee centers where there are hungry mouths to feed. Some food is cooked by volunteer chefs and frozen so it can be distributed later. In 2014 we collected and distributed 27 tons of otherwise wasted food.

ARTIST CATERING THE NEW NORDIC WAY

Backstage we give the artists and their crew a taste of New Nordic cooking. We have a large group of volunteer chefs who cook a 70% organic menu using mostly local and seasonal produce.

A MOSTLY ORGANIC FOOD COURT

All the food stalls in Roskilde Food Court are re quired to use at least 75% organic produce in their cooking. You will find a handful of stalls that are +90% organic as well as delicious vegetarian alternatives.

103 WE ❤ WATER

So do the children in Africa. In the CITYcentres and on the festival site you can get water from Lovespring. And it’s not bottled and transported from a foreign country, it’s from right beneath our feet. Each time you get your water here you support Lovespring’s work with water projects in developing countries.

FROM HAPPY COWS TO HAPPY CAMPERS

All dairy products (milk, butter yoghurt etc.) at Roskilde Festival is from the Danish organic company Naturmælk. They work with 31 family-run farms in southern Jutland to produce high quality and environmentally friendly organic products. Many of them even work with biodynamic farming, which has even higher demands for sustainability.

A WINE OFFER YOU CAN’T REFUSE

The one-liter red and white wines are organic and brought in from Italy rather than from overseas. They are imported specially for the festival and come in FSC labeled packaging, which not only is better for the environment but also gives the wine a longer shelf life. PHOTO : MARTI N KAUFM

Do you have allergies, are on a special diet, feel like something special or simply can’t remember where you found that superbly delicious meal last year? Don’t worry, we will help you navigate through Roskilde Festival’s more than 150 food stalls and bars.

Roskilde Food Court near the Gloria stage is an ideal place to start if you have special needs. Here you will find stalls specialised in fish, vegetarian, non-gluten etc. See page 93. At CITYcentre East, FoodJam allows you to compose your own 100 % organic meal for just DKK 50 (see page 100), and Dream City provides an outdoor DIY kitchen.

FOOD IN YOUR APP

It can be difficult to remember just where you saw that chicken tortilla or the Asian noodle salad you desperately need. No need to worry, it’s all in our official Roskilde Festival app. Here you can easily search for food everywhere on the festival grounds. You can filter the results after type of food, and if you’re craving something NOW, the app can help you find whatever’s closest by. Our app is available for iPhone and Android. Text RF APP to 1204 to download the app. If you don’t have a Danish mobile service provider, text to +45 42409019 instead.

USE #RFFOOD and HELP OTHERS

If you instagram your favourite hangover burger or tip your vegetarian friends on Facebook about the best veggie meal at the festival, remember to use the hashtag #RFfood so others can find and use your tips as well.

IN YOUR CAMP

SAFETY

108

SAFETY IN YOUR

CA M P NO OPEN FIRE

The combination of nylon tents and open fire is extremely dangerous, which is why it is important that you do not light any fire in your camp – neither during the festival nor when you’re leaving. The ban on open fire also includes torches, candles, hurricane lanterns, cooking devices and barbecues – including disposable barbecues. At every agora you’ll find a fire ring, a cooking island and a communal barbecue you can use if you want to grill sausages, make soup or simply heat a meal. Please remember that it is absolutely life threatening to light a gas burner in your tent, likewise it is not allowed to burn your tent, containers or other objects when you leave the festival.

IF YOU NEED HELP

If you need help during the festival you can address the campsite service attendants in orange vests. Furthermore at all agoras service attendants are ready to help you, and keep an eye on the camping area.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

If you’re in need of medical assistance at Roskilde Festival, please use the festival’s own first aid stations. In case of life-threatening emergencies, call 112 or use the 112 app, which can track your position and make it easier for the ambulance service to find you. However, the easiest way to get medical assistance is by contacting one of the campsite attendants, so please do so.

FIRST AID

First aid stations are located at CITYcentre East and West. There is also a first aid station open around the clock on the festival area just west of Orange Stage. At the first aid stations (CITYcentre East and West and west of Orange Stage) you’ll be able to store insulin and other medicine that requires cooling. First aid stations are clearly marked by a first aid sign.

do not light bon fires in ing your camp, neither dur the festival nor when you are on your way home.

IN YOUR CAMP

PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID

Psychological first aid is also found at your nearest first aid station. The investigative teams, the festival’s social workers, can be found both at the festival and camping areas. All the social workers have a relevant pedagogical, social or health professional background. They are easily spotted in white vests with the words “social worker” on the back.

WATCH OUT FOR THIEVES!

There are thieves at Roskilde Festival, especially in the camping area, so we encourage you to take extra good care of your valuables and use the free cloakrooms at the agoras. Lock your tent with a padlock so your neighbours can keep an eye on it.

IN CASE OF THEFT

You can report any stolen property at politi. dk.This also includes stolen wristbands. If you have an iPhone, remember to download the Find My iPhone app. It will help the police track down your phone if stolen. For Android users, we recommend Prey, which offers a similar service. Download at preyproject.org.

SAFETY AT THE

STAGES Being at a concert should never be boring, but it shouldn’t be dangerous either. Therefore, there are a number of safety requirements and precautions at all the stages at Roskilde Festival that we ask you to follow. For the sake of you and your friends.

TAKE CARE OF THOSE AROUND YOU

The safety at Roskilde Festival is continually evaluated to remove and reduce risks. We closely follow and participate in national and international developments in the safety field, but we still need your help to ensure that you and everybody around you gets the best and most safe concert experience possible.

please help us with the following —— Pay attention to – and follow – the safety information presented on the big screens at the stages and the guidelines from the crowd safety staff in the orange vests. —— Pay attention to friends and people around you. —— If you need help, or see others who do, please address the crowd safety staff. —— Make sure to sleep, eat, and drink so that your body is supplied with rest and energy. If you feel unwell, or see someone else who seems to need help, address the festival staff.

PROTECT YOUR EARS

You won’t get much out of Roskilde Festival if you can’t hear anything. If you experience a ringing or a buzzing in your ears you have to be careful – it’s a serious danger signal. Therefore – buy a set of earplugs. They can be found in all kiosks, drink stalls and merchandise stalls and cost DKK 10.

111 HIGH ENERGY CONCERTS

—— We will allow moshing, dancing etc. at these concerts. —— Do notice, however, that we do not allow crowd surfing.

A

B

C

D

The green and red lights at the entrance tell you if there is free space available or if it’s full. You can’t stay in the pit between concerts since they have to be cleared and cleaned. entrance to the pits The pit system entrances are located at both sides of Orange Stage and in the east side of Arena. At Orange Stage, there are two entrances to the four sections in front. If you want to go to sections B or D, you have to use the entrance east of the stage. The entrance to sections A and C is west of the stage. remember! Staying in the pit systems during concerts can be a very intense and physical experience. We ask that you only stay in there if you feel completely safe at all times.

DO NOT

—— Crowd surf. Crowd surfing is very dangerous. Nobody likes your shoes in their face, and you might fall down or be trampled at worst. Crowd surfing is strictly forbidden at all stages and can cause immediate expulsion from the festival. —— Form human chains. You put others at risk by creating unrest in the crowd. —— Run or push to get in front. You create waves in the crowd and increase the risk of someone falling or getting crushed. —— Sit on the shoulders of somebody. You risk getting hurt, and it ruins the concert experience for others.

AT THE STAGES

Some concerts at Roskilde Festival call for moshing, wild dancing etc. We mark these with a ‘high energy’ icon. If you see this icon next to an act in the music presentations, expect the audience activity in front of the stage to be quite wild, and we want you to be careful if you choose to be up front.

SAFETY

PIT SYSTEMS

The pit systems in front of Orange stage and Arena are safety constructions that make the concert experience safe for those of you who would like to be right in front of the stage. Show up early at the concerts since there is limited amount of space in the pit systems and many who would like to get in there.

LET’S KEEP IT CLEAN

112

LET’S KEEP IT

CLEAN Even though an army of volunteers assist with cleaning up after the festival the renovation expenses regularly mounts to millions of kroner every year.

DID YOU KNOW THAT...?

—— In 2014 we removed about 1,500 tons of garbage from the festival area —— We’re putting up more than 3,200 garbage cans all over the festival area —— More than 3.5 million bot tles and cans pass through our refund system every year —— If you throw your empty bottles/can/ cups in our turquoise-coloured containers you are donating the refund directly to charity. We also accept cans without deposit labels as well as wine and liquor bottles.

REACT – GET RID OF YOUR TRASH

We’re making it easier to keep Roskilde Festival clean and sustainable. ReAct is the name of our fight against garbage. You will find 12 recycling stations all over the campsite (see map on page 128), and there are garbage cans at every single camping square. The garbage cans at the campsite are emptied several times daily by volunteers. The volunteers also hand out empty trash bags and accept your full ones, making it easier for you to clean up your camp. At the recycling stations you can sort your waste (general waste, metal, glass, batteries and cardboard). The stations are open 24 hours a day and staffed between 09:00 and 16:00 – Look for ReAct’s trash logo.

During the past five years, Clean Out Loud has been working to change the culture around garbage at Roskilde Festival through the community, festive garbage parades and creative events.

CLEAN AREAS

Want to live cleaner and greener? The clean areas are for those who prefer grass to broken glass, and would rather dispose of garbage than sit in it. The clean areas in B and K are “regular” areas where you can party as loudly as you want – but here everyone helps keep the area clean and comfortable. Area J is both clean and silent (no loud music after 22:00, please).

CLEAN OUT LOUD

When you visit Area E this year, you will experience that it is not just our most festive area, but also one of the cleanest. This area is the home of Clean Out Loud.

LET’S KEEP IT CLEAN

DONATE YOUR CAMPING GEAR

Let others benefit from your old camping gear when you leave the festival. You can donate your tent, sleeping mats, unopened canned food etc. to our CampAid volunteers. They are located at all recycling stations throughout the festival week and will make sure that your used gear will benefit those in need.

Lost property should be handed in immediately to the audience information office by Gate 10 on the road “Along The Railroad”. Lost property can be claimed until Sunday 5 July at 12:00.

Out of respect for the nine young men who lost their lives on 30 June 2000 at Roskilde Festival and their relatives, the festival established a memorial in 2001 at the western border of the audience area of Orange Stage. The spot was established in order for us to commemorate and remember ‘…how fragile we are…’. Lars Skov Nielsen has created the sculpture at the site.
