When we’re all gathered here we become the festival city of Roskilde. In this particular city you are challenged to participate. We want you to engage with the music, the art and the many creative communities. Don’t just stand around. Instead, jump right in and become a participant, a dreamer, a resident and a co-creator, who is part of giving life to something new. This is the 46th Roskilde Festival since the beginning back in 1971. Let’s make it one to remember – together! Thanks for being here!

PHOTO: KHANH GIA

Imagine this year’s Roskilde Festival without you being a part of it. Ludicrous, we know, but play along here for a second. Would it be the same? Of course it wouldn’t, and the same goes for the girl in the neighbouring camp, the volunteer who puts the wristband around your arm and the band performing on stage. It’s you, him, her, them. It’s all of us collectively.

At Roskilde Festival you can loosen up and let everything go for a while. As you enter the gates leading into Roskilde Festival, you become part of a creative and spiritual fellowship in an experimental and temporary urban community that rises up on what is usually just a plain grass field.

WE ARE ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

At Roskilde Festival it is allowed – some would perhaps even say necessary – to believe in a utopia. Although this Greek word translates into ‘no place’ and the concept is generally considered as a society that defi es reality, we’d like to think that we come pretty close to creating exactly that right here.

WELCOME

WE ARE

We’re 130,000 people in total and we’re all a part of making this particular festival special. For 8 days we are Roskilde Festival.

NEWS AT #RF16 A NEW TENT FOR AVALON

We have given the Avalon stage a makeover. This means a new tent and scenography inspired by the 1920s cabaret scene mixed up with bits of chic and modern New York. Avalon is something different compared to our other stages. Here you will fi nd yourself in an intimate environment.

ELECTRONIC NEWCOMERS GET A STAGE OF THEIR OWN

Countdown is a brand-new stage which is open in the fi rst days of the festival (Sunday 26 June to Tuesday 28 June). When the main festival site opens Countdown transforms into a gateway. Countdown delivers fresh talents from the Scandinavian electronic scene. It invites you to dwell in the grass at daytime and to dance during the night. See page 56.

EQUALITY 2016: STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS

In 2016 we focus on political equality and human rights. We look at how human rights are challenged both in the Western democratic world as well as in countries that are politically and socially unstable. See page 28.

ART ZONE HEADS EAST

Art Zone is Roskilde Festival’s epicenter for art just east of Orange Stage. Read more on page 24.

A PLATFORM FOR THE BURGEONING DIY UNDERGROUND

Mayhem is the happening venue in our capital at the moment and they have teamed up with the Copenhagen-based label Escho to curate a platform of their own, playing all days from Wednesday to Saturday. Read more on page 48.

INCREASED FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is always key at Roskilde Festival. We always focus on recycling and reducing the amount of waste. Therefore 11 recycling stations have been set up on the camping areas where you can dispose of combustible waste, cardboard, metal, glass, batteries and camping equipment.

REFUNDING SCALED UP

In recent years it hasn’t been easy to hand in large quantities of empty bottles and cans at the festival. This year we’re doing something about that. We’re introducing two large refund stalls in the camping area. They are open around the clock and can be found in area L and the northern end of area C.

SETTLE’N SHARE

We’ve started up a new initiative in area P in cooperation with Roskilde Festival Højskole. The area is called Settle’N Share and we’re focusing on responsibility, fellowship and a sharing culture. All inhabitants have applied to camp here, and all camps contribute positively to the area and community.

DO YOU KNOW A TRUE #RFHero?

10

DO YOU KNOW

A TRUE

#RFHero?

We oft en speak of soldiers, fi refighters and fictional, supernatural characters as heroes. In our opinion there are other qualities that defi ne being a hero. At least at Roskilde Festival. Extraordinary circumstances is not a prerequisite for heroism. It can be found in your camp or at a concert. Anyone can be a Roskilde hero!

: nominate a hero o ot ph a m ra ag Inst ory along with a st of that special deed . Use the o. erro He RFFH hashtag #R

DEFINITION Defi nition taken from the yet-to-be-published Roskilde Festival Dictionary: hero noun / 'hı .r ʊ / A person who helps or does a deed that makes Roskilde Festival better for others.

K OF FAME ROSKILDE WAL You know the famous sidewalk in Hollywood with all the stars, right? Imagine a Roskildelised version of that. Among all nominated heroes of Roskilde we’ll find five people whose names will be carved in an orange-coloured stone and put down in the area right in front of Roskilde Festival – as a celebration of everyone who goes that extra mile for the good of others at Roskilde Festival and in society in general.

P — a trueeteRr F

#

Hero

Imagine the following scenarios:

— A rain shower gets you all soaked during your volunteer shift. Then a fellow volunteer brings hot cocoa for everyone. — A group of young fi rst-timers are scouting for a spot at a seemingly fully occupied campsite. Someone notices and asks everybody to move their tents an inch so that the debutants can be part of the community. — Peter couldn’t aff ord a ticket to Roskilde, so he asked his friends for micro-donations. He ended up with way too much money. The extra money was spent on beer for camps in need (true story from last year!). We want to celebrate the true Roskilde heroes. Perhaps you know of one. And if you do, you should nominate that special someone. We’ll put some of the best examples on our big screens, in our newspaper and in our social media channels for the world to see. The Heroes of Roskilde campaign is made in collaboration with The Tuborg Foundation.

OD A FORCE FOR GO FOUR DECADES AN TH E OR FOR M Since 1972 Roskilde Festival has donated more than DKK 270 million (approx. €36.2 million) to humanitarian and cultural work benefiting children and young people around the world.

One of the many donations from last year’s profi t benefi ted the local boxing association AIK. It has existed since 1930 and is one of Denmark’s oldest amateur boxing clubs. AIK has a long and proud history with regional, Nordic and even European boxing championships. And there’s a beating heart behind it all. For the club it’s very important to reach out to the kids who need a little extra support and guidance. A total of 200 children swarm in and out of the club almost as they please and can participate in the training sessions on their own terms. Bokseklubben AIK Roskilde has received a donation from Roskilde Festival Charity Society because of their social responsibility by offering free boxing training for the 11-18-year-olds. The money is primarily spent on new equipment since the increasing number of young boxers tear on the gear. Your participation in Roskilde Festival – volunteers and paying Roskilde participants alike – help generate donations to places like AIK.

Every year Roskilde Festival gathers around 1,800 tons of trash. Since 2010, DTU-students have been working on improving the handling of waste and finding new ways to recycle.

Other projects this year include WiFi tracking for safety purposes, analyzing electricity consumption, developing a portable beer cooler with no electrical supply, and a novel way to measure dust levels during the festival. Find out more about the projects in DTU’s TechLab located between Avalon and Orange Stage by Trade Zone West

A SUSTAINABLE FESTIVAL

16

A SUSTAINABLE FESTIVAL

Christina Bilde, spokeswoman for Roskilde Festival

Since its inception Roskilde has been a non-profi t festival, and every year all profi ts are donated to charitable causes. However, our social commitment does not end there. It is our wish to create a festival that cares about people and the environment. Since last year’s festival we’ve come up with two ambitions defi ning what we want a sustainable Roskilde Festival to look like. One for the festival’s impact on the environment and one for our social impact.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

We dream of creating a festival without negative environmental consequences. We want the festival, its participants and partners to make environmentally favourable choices, so we can move towards a festival where all waste is a resource, and a festival that is carbon-neutral and has a 100% fossil-free energy supply.

SOCIAL IMPACT

We believe in human beings as building blocks of the community. We want festival participants and partners to make choices that contribute to making a positive social impact in the world with respect for human rights and human resources.

to create It’s our dream stival Fe e ild sk a Ro gative ne y without an pact. im l ta en nm enviro

These two ambitions can be seen many places at the festival, and you can read more about that elsewhere in this booklet. For example, we have waste sorting stations on the campsite, organic and vegetarian food for sale in the food stalls, we use eco-labelled building materials and cleaning products, buses and trains, we have equality awareness activities in Rising City, improved conditions for refund collectors, campaigns against sexism and more. On the opposite page we have put together 12 actions you can take towards a more sustainable Roskilde Festival yourself.

ENVI

1. Bring your camping gear home with you and use it next year. Otherwise it becomes waste. 2. If your camping gear is broken, bring it to the nearest campsite recycling station. 3. Try a vegetarian meal. Meat consumption is our biggest source of CO2 emission. 4. Choose organic products in food stalls and bars. Our goal is to be 75 % organic this year. 5. Reuse plastic bottles for tap water. You can fi nd taps by the toilets and Love Spring water bars. 6. Take the train or the bus home from the festival.

SOCIAL ACTION

1. Do not tolerate sexism, racism or discrimination. 2. Groping is not acceptable. Consensual touching is, of course. 3. Refund collectors help clean up aft er our party. Treat them as equals. 4. Check out the programme for equality awareness activities. 5. Have a conversation with someone different from yourself. 6. Social Workers in white vests can help if you need someone to talk to – no matter if your issues are big or small.

ARTS

18

ARTS The art at this year’s Roskilde Festival is based on the theme of Excess, which will be the common language that binds the selected works together no matter where you might encounter them on the festival site. Excess is all about the extravagant, the reckless, the intimate and the close-up. It bleeds across borders both in terms of form and on the inter-human and interactive level. Excess is experimental and explores borderlands and the unknown. It is a limbo between reality and the unreal that invites you to critically engage and commit.

ARTS

It may sound up in the air, but we assure you that when you have read the next couple of pages, you will realise that it is in fact quite down to earth and we promise you that it will spark something in you. This year we present more than 20 productions by Danish and international artists that span a wide range, from renowned stars to the emerging underground. You can look forward to encounters with installation art, performances, paintings, street art, graffi ti, light installations and literature.

The renowned graffi ti and street artist Niels ”Shoe” Meulman from Amsterdam presents his take on it, as he decorates the 90 metre grandstand wall in front of the Orange Stage in his unique calligraffiti style. Shoe works mainly in the borderlands of street art, calligraphy and repetitions. LET’S MAKE PIZZA

LET’S MAKE PIZZA

Do you want to meet other festival guests over a pizza? With Let’s Make Pizza the artist Jesper Aabille brings the interpersonal meeting into focus as he invites you and the others to bake your own pizza in a number of converted oil drums that have been turned into pizza ovens. Bring your own topping and you will receive cheese, tomato sauce, dough and the opportunity to bake your own pizza alongside other festival guests. See you at the cooking area in East City. IMAGES Roskilde Festival has entered into a collaboration with Images 2016 – An Age of Our Own Making. At Images 2016 renowned artists from Africa, the Middle East and Asia are invited to Denmark. Through their works the artists relate to and comment on their societies. The works take topics such as migration, co-existence and prejudice under critical review. This means that the performances are well aligned with this year’s topic – Equality (read more on page 28). An Age of Our Own Making is curated by Solvej Helweg Ovesen and Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung and realised by Holbæk Municipality.

Explor graffiti on Roskilde Festival on Instagram via the hashtag #r fgraff

Graffiti Zone is placed west of the Arena stage and is a combined gigantic gallery and oasis of art. Here, festival-goers can withdraw and relax between concerts while enjoying amazing graffi ti from some of the fi nest painters in the world.

GRAFFITI IN 3D

By the Arena stage alongside the Fence Walk you will fi nd three different graffi ti pieces combining murals and installations into three dimensional pieces of art. The art installation will break out of the mural, so to speak, thereby transcending the classical two-dimensional painting and becoming a three-dimensional form. The three artists responsible for these works are Berlin-based Base23, Roid from England and Australian artist Phibs.

STREET ART ANIMALS

This year there will also be art within the fences of the Fence Walk. Irish street artist Dan Leo will create an installation consisting of a variety of street art animals. They hide among the trees so look for them as you walk the Fence Walk. Graffi ti at Roskilde Festival is supported by Molotow Spraypaint.

GRAFFITI

GRAFFITI ZONE

Graffi ti has been an important part of Roskilde Festival’s artistic expression since 1999 when we fi rst introduced the art form and invited three artists to participate. The festival is visited by both Danish and international graffi ti and street artists who together decorate almost 1,5 kilometres of fences and facades. Quite amazing! e the

The piece Native, Exotic, Normal / Circle of Flags has been created by the artist duo Hesselholdt & Mejlvang and produced by Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art.

THE DEVIL IS REAL

Art Zone is the epicentre of art at Roskilde Festival. Here art is omnipresent and integrated in the surroundings. This year Art Zone is east of Orange Stage in the space between Food Court, Gloria and Graffi ti Zone. Here, artworks, good food and chill-out area blend together to form an intimate and integrated experience. Below you can read more about what’s on offer this year.

Flagship Shelters/Bottle Collectors’ VIP is the art project made by Superfl ex for Roskilde Festival 2016. The three Flagship Shelters are inspired by some of the most exclusive and prominent fashion stores’ headquarters in Tokyo, designed by superstar architects. EQUALITY STAND UP S 2016 FOR YOUR RIGHT

ACTIVITIES

Surveillance, revenge porn, global activism and comeback battles! In 2016 we’re focusing on political equality and human rights, and we’re putting you right in the middle!

Below you can read about some of the activities under the Equality banner at Roskilde Festival 2016. Check out the schedule on page 31.

You can engage in fl irting courses, join talks with politicians, delve into topics such as your right to privacy, the current refugee situation, and you can be a part of a huge human banner and hear what you can do in situations when the politicians have given up. Under one banner we call it ‘Stand up for your right’ (remember the Bob Marley tune? Give “Get Up, Stand Up” a spin), and through events and activities we want to emphasise that political rights are important and that we shouldn’t take them for granted. We have teamed up with organisations such as ActionAid Denmark, Trampoline House, The Askov Foundation, Everyday Sexism Project and Ungdomsbureauet, and many of the art projects and experiences on-site – for instance Danish art group Superflex’ VIP lounges for refund collectors and the concert with The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians and Damon Albarn – relate to the equality theme we’re introducing. It’s all about creating change together. And with 130,000 people at this year’s festival, collectively we have the strength to sow the seeds for changes that can bring us more equality in the world.

EDWARD SNOWDEN — LIVE INTERVIEW

The American whistleblower Edward Snowden will be interviewed live at Roskilde Festival 2016. As an intelligence agent, Edward Snowden caused much controversy when he leaked the many documents that revealed the extent of the surveillance of citizens, politicians and states conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency in America. Crucially, this started and stirred a debate as surveillance and freedom of speech became – yet again – important topics on a global scale. Experience Snowden live via satellite connection from his exile in Moscow. This will happen on the big screen in Rising City on Tuesday 28 June at 16:15.

COMEBACK BATTLE

IF THE SEA COULD TALK

Get help talking back to sexist hecklers with a wellaimed reply and join Everyday Sexism Project’s Comeback battle. The challenge is to focus on sexist heckling and behaviour in a fun way. Two teams compete and take turns making comebacks to sexist comments presented by an actor.

The refugee-political fashion show “If the sea could talk” is a tribute to the thousands of migrants and refugees who disappear or die on their way towards safety every month. The brand of clothing is made by journalist, artist, activist and fashion designer Day Maximo who fled Rwanda himself. The fashion show is organised by Trampoline House.

30 LISTENING LOOS: STORIES FROM A LIFE ON THE BOTTOM

Personal stories from young and old people about being at the bottom and on the fringe of society. They give us an understanding of the necessity to fight for equality in the welfare state of Denmark. Listen to stories from a life on the bottom on special listening loos set up on the festival campsite.

EQUALITY – HUMAN BANNER

HUGE HUMAN BANNER

We need your help making a huge human banner. Gather all your friends and your neighbouring camps as well. We need up to 1000 festival-goers to form the letters E-Q-U-A-L-I-T-Y for a grand aerial photo shoot. ActionAid Denmark mobilises all participants to send an equality message from Roskilde Festival. Come to Dream City, just by the big Hollywood-esque sign.

WHY EQUALITY

Every year Roskilde Festival focuses on a hot issue or on societal conditions that deserve special attention. In 2016 we focus on political equality and human rights. When you meet the words Stand Up for Your Rights on banners and screens all over the festival site, it’s our way of directing your attention to the importance of political rights, which should not be taken for granted. We have created those rights, and we must defend them. To do so, we must understand where, when and why the rights are challenged. We must ask ourselves why they are important.

CLAUS HØXBROE

TOILET POETRY

Under the theme totally screwed the Danish poet Claus Høxbroe has decorated toilet walls with ‘toilet poetry’. You’re invited to write your own as well. Between Sunday and Tuesday Claus Høxbroe & Stik Op interpret ‘Stories from a life on the bottom’ (see above) and selected poems from the toilet walls.

THE ORCHESTRA OF SYRIAN MUSICIANS

40

A REASSEMBLED STRA E H C R O N A I R Y S The civil war in Syria scattered its members around the world and some fled their homeland, but now the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians is to be reunited for a special concert at Roskilde Festival. On 29 June at 18:00, the orchestra will perform as the opening act on the Orange Stage, and the British jack-of-all-musical-trades Damon Albarn will play an integral part in the show and invite a line of (at the time of writing, secret-but-surely-exciting) musical guests on stage as well. The 90-strong orchestra fi rst worked with Albarn at Damascus Opera House in 2009, then appeared on the track “White Flag” on Gorillaz’ Plastic Beach album and on the subsequent world tour. However, the outbreak of civil war in spring 2011 caused many members of the orchestra to flee. The Roskilde concert will be one of their fi rst performances together since then.

A MIRACULOUS SOUND

The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians performs traditional Arabic music as well as experimental work based on traditional forms. “It’s a truly miraculous sound they create,” says Damon Albarn. “There’s a whole choir, there’s strings, there’s soloists, there’s amazing percussion. It’s a really dynamic and joyous sound and it’s stayed with me for all these years.”

Roskilde Festival booker Peter Hvalkof has no doubt whatsoever that it will be a spectacular opening gig, and he’s delighted that this particular ensemble plays Roskilde 2016.

G?

WHO'S PLAYIN

According to Peter Hvalkof there are many expectations as to who will be on stage. Also, there are lots of practical obstacles to overcome, for instance getting EU visas for the musicians. And then there’s Damon Albarn. It’s no secret that he has many playmates all over the globe. So only time will tell who we will see on stage. But we guarantee it will be worth seeking out!

ILDE ALBARN ♥ ROSK Damon Albarn is at Roskilde Festival for the eighth time. There’s a mutual aff ection between Albarn and Roskilde. He has played here four times with Blur, the fi rst time in 1992. Since then he has performed here with Gorillaz, as a solo act and with Africa Express.

41

“Of course, there’s a political dimension to it as well. We’ve watched in horror how the refugee crisis has evolved. In the public debate the human aspect is often forgotten. Human beings are resources, and with this booking we’d like to point to this fact and remind everybody that refugees are people. In this case they play the most wonderful music!” Hvalkof concludes.

THE ORCHESTRA OF SYRIAN MUSICIANS

“It’s exciting getting to present an orchestra that plays Arabic music. Western ears are not used to such sounds. And that’s the exciting part. At Roskilde we’d like to present all kinds of genres from all corners of the world,” says Hvalkof.

GRIME’S STILL STANDING

42

GRIME’S STILL STANDING! Don’t mind the Elton Johnsian wordplay but there’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to the British counterpart to hip-hop. Grime is going global these days! The grime genre was born with this millennium as a sort of development of UK garage and jungle. Deja Vu FM, Rinse FM, Flex FM, Freeze FM, Axe FM – these were some of the staple radio stations illegally held up in high-rise fl ats in London. All of them blasting out new grime music. In 2007, DJ Logan Sama wrote: “We’ll keep it [grime, ed.] our secret until such time that we are ready to bring it to the wider world on our own terms.” Fast forward to 2015. At the Brit Awards Kanye West was joined onstage by Skepta and other grime artists, a ‘Grime Symphony’ sold out the Royal Albert Hall and Drake had a Boy Better Know tattoo and, according to Skepta, signed with the label. From then on, the scene moved into circles that would have previously interpreted ‘MC’ as a probable acronym for a type of medicine or exotic holiday destination.

Thomas Jepsen, music booker

“As far as I see it grime is the sound of 2016”

ERS

FOUNDING FATH

First-wave key MCs were Wiley, Kano and Dizzee Rascal. The latter became the UK’s first black male grime popstar and has visited Roskilde Festival twice. Kano and fl agship crew Boy Better Know has also played Roskilde.

GET CLUED IN Got an extra half-hour on your hands? Watch Noisey’s documentary about Skepta. It’ll give you insight into one of the top players in grime: roskil.de/skepta.

43

Now, with the release of Skepta’s brand-new Konnichiwa album, grime has achieved what DJ Logan Sama required. It is hailed as “the sound of the UK underground finally standing proud at street level.”

GRIME NEVER LEFT

“Grime isn’t back – it never left ,” says Roskilde Festival booker Thomas Jepsen. “The sound has been around for a long time, but the environment has become more established. As far as I see it grime is the sound of 2016. At Roskilde Festival we always try to seek out such tendencies and this year we are proud to present the very best of this scene.” You can look forward to five different interpreters of grime in the line-up; everything from the hottest newcomers to the most talked-about acts. Skepta grimes up Roskilde Festival along with Stormzy, Elf Kid, Little Simz, AJ Tracey and Plastician.

Come sing your heart out! We’re clearing the Gloria stage for this very purpose – for all your voices, deep, high, shrill, loud, quiet ones alike. This is the third year of this new, strong tradition. In 2014 we sang Pete Seeger songs as a celebration of community and the idea of the song as a tool to share opinions and knowledge as well as to change the world around us. Now we’re trying to defi ne the Roskilde songbook. We asked all you Roskilde-goers for input before the festival, and this year’s songbook has been put together, based on your suggestions.

ESCHO — THE LABEL WITH THE GOLDEN EARS

Elsewhere in Copenhagen you’ll fi nd a small offi ce belonging to Escho. It’s a label with a jawdropping ability to fi nd just the right acts on the brink of something, be it creatively or commercially. Escho signs acts with a desire to experiment with new expressions and who eschew the middle of the road. Iceage, Lower and Liss are successful examples of acts starting at Escho and subsequently heading off to sign deals with Matador Records and XL Recordings.

The latest branch on the Escho tree is a publishing arm releasing various kinds of literature. So much exciting stuff is coming out of Copenhagen and Mayhem and Escho are two prominent channels for it all. That’s why we’ve given them their own space at this year’s Roskilde Festival. Drop by and experience an abundance of artistic expressions from our capital’s burgeoning DIY underground.

COUNTDOWN CHINAH DK

This trio entwines electronic pop and a sophisticated R&B sound, and they are starting to stir up some international buzz. The debut single “Away From Me” has been noticed everywhere. With lead singer Fine Glindvad’s vocals at the very front, Chinah gently reaches for your heart with a mellow minimalism.

GENTS

GENTS DK

Look forward to some pastel synth-pop! These two lads share a passion for synths and drum machines. They formed Gents a couple of years ago when they moved to Berlin. Here they crafted their signature sound by fusing synths, programmed beats with soft and crooney baritone vocals.

GUNDELACH NO

Kai Gundelach is a true wonder kid in atmospheric electronic pop music. Perhaps you’ve already heard his song “Alone in the Night”, which delivers delicate falsetto vocals and throbbing beats. All fans of artists like James Blake, Bon Iver and Nicolas Jaar, come closer. You will dig this!

L SPECTACLE

FIRST HATE

FIRST HATE DK

There’s a poetic contradiction between sadness and dancing. Danish synth-pop duo First Hate makes it a matter of course! The duo combines programmed melodies and drumbeats fused with live keyboard recordings and dark, monotone-yetdramatic vocals. Fans of early-days Depeche Mode will be in great company here.

AN AUDIOVISUA

In 2016 we’re bringing together some topnotch upcoming VJs and a selection of the Countdown musicians. Nine performances will be a collaborative effort between visual artists and musicians from Norway, Iceland and Denmark. Using both the latest animation techniques and old-school light tables and manual props, the aim is to have some tailored visual art to enhance the concert experience.

57

KASBO SE

19-year-old producer Kasbo has been making waves with his remixes and self-penned productions. He has a signature future bass style with flourishing synths and infectious melodies, which includes relaxing soundscapes, all showing off Kasbo’s uncanny versatility as a producer. He recently toured with Odesza.

JAMAIKA

IVAN AVE NO

Lo-fi productions and jazzy rhythms make up Ivan Ave’s hip-hop, which is recognised both in and outside of his mother country, Norway. Ivan Ave raps in English, and his proficiency is easily on par with his peers. The Oslo-based rapper’s sound will appeal to fans of A Tribe Called Quest and MF Doom.

JAMAIKA DK

20-year-old Jamaika’s music is taken directly from the street. He gives us an unfi ltered outlook on the state of things. He talk-sings through an autotune filter, which gives his vocals a desperate and regretful tone. It’s tough, it’s sensitive and it’s the future sound of Danish hip-hop.

KABLAM SE

Kablam is more than an onomatopoeic phrase from an Adam Westera Batman fi lm. It’s the name of one of the most promising young DJs at the moment. She mixes

She looks like a dark songstress with her goth-heavy imagery. But Mendoza is full of pop sensibilities, and now she’s heading towards a potentially big breakthrough. She has flirted with Eurodance and rave, but her new tune “The Meaning of Cruel” indicates a new direction. On Countdown we’ll hear more of that!

GUNS NO

Guns is the musical baby of Gunhild Jarwson Tekle, a Norwegian musician currently residing in Copenhagen. With her woozy synth pop she has carved a fi tting slot for herself between acts like Beach House and Chvrches. This is danceable and emotionally laid-back music at the very same time!

KASPER MAROTT DK

Are you up for some feinschmecker house and techno? Look no further. Kasper Marott started producing electronic music at the age of 12, and he is now a much sought-after musician. Last year he was among the few talented producers enrolled in the Red Bull Music Academy in Paris. The future looks bright for this one!

MWUANA SE

Mwuana is making his way to Sweden’s hip-hop frontline with his take on the auto-tuned trap sound. He balances the fl avour of ghetto music with an approachable party sound, and according to the critics, the MC’s tracks have got an international touch even though he’s rapping in his mother tongue.

SOHO REZANEJAD

SOHO REZANEJAD DK

With seductive dark vocals Danish/Iranian singer Soho Rezanejad dives into gloomy electronic pop music and explores the sinister regions of the genre. This is an ideal soundtrack for the love sick, the love-stricken and the ones just loving catchy tunes that you can dance along to.

The femcees spit in (mostly) Icelandic about topics such as sexual violence, politics and sexual freedom. Their dynamic stage performance has won the clan lots of international attention.

Soleima’s music has been described as a perfect mix of MØ and FKA Twigs. Look forward to an enticing show when she takes on our Countdown stage.

WHY BE DK

Why Be’s music is a wonderfully chaotic confl uence of styles. House, ballroom, Jersey club, ambient and noise are all added to the mix – and it shows an unconventional and exciting artist on the rise. The track “Heroin Hat” made it to FACT Magazine’s list of best club tracks 2015.

Time to go berserk! Bersærk call their own music ‘heathen stoner rock’. The lyrics are bellowed out in Danish, and the instrumental backing is full of crushingly heavy riff s and a nerve that has led to Bersærk being called the next big thing in Danish metal.

CHILDRENN DK

The name may suggest a young band, but don’t be fooled. Childrenn is made up of some quite experienced players on the Danish music scene. Childrenn plays noisy rock with elements from both kraut and psych. They recently put out their critically acclaimed debut album Animale.

EMILIE RAMIREZ DK

You’ll be struck by Emilie Ramirez’s outstanding vocal chords right away. The 21-year-old Dane has a dark glow and a special soul in her voice. Together with producer Frankie Motion, Emilie Ramirez fi nds the perfect combination of the sensibilities of R&B, the pounding rhythms of hip-hop and the catchy elements of pop.

61 F.M.K. is short for Fuck Marry Kill and sounds quite like some exploiting project. Fortunately, this band brings us wonderful garage-y, new wave-y punk rock instead. F.M.K. is a product of noise and energy, with inspiration from garage rock, punk and early 90s riot grrrl.

FOR AKIA DK

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE JANE FONDA AEROBIC VHS? FI

This Finnish trio can do much more than come up with the funniest band name in our line-up. They play ‘fl ower garage’. It features 60s girl groupinspired melodies, bubblegum punk riffs and pounding drums. The setup for this cutesy music is drums, bass and organs. That’s right, no guitar.

KATINKA DK

With a hoarse voice and sharp elements from folk and electronica, Katinka Bjerregaard makes beautiful and sincere music with honest Danishlanguage lyrics about everyday troubles and joys. The 24-year-old singer-songwriter bridges the gap between heartfelt pop and indie music with an intimate and unique approach.

KLUB 27 DK

Klub 27 conjures up gilt-edged rock music, heavily inspired by the golden days of psychedelic rock. And with their well-crafted Danish lyrics (front man Haruna used to be a rapper so he knows his way around words) they sound like some modernised version of the Danish band Steppeulvene.

MASASOLO DK

Masasolo has stunned listeners with the single “Really Thought She Loved Me”. With ambient guitar tunes and dreamy vocals it channels modern psychedelic rock in the vein of Tame Impala and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Much more is on the way so expect lots of hits-to-be when Masasolo takes on Roskilde Festival.

ONDT BLOD NO

All the way from Finnmark, Norway this hard-hammering punk group mixes the fun with the fury and will deliver what is bound to be a demolishing concert. Ondt Blod is a five-piece that mixes hardcore, punk and party fun into an outrageously good time. And of course, they sing in their mother tongue.

Phlake melds the soft and steamy sounds of R&B with the hardness of hip-hop’s rhythm tracks. They call it rhythm’n’balls, and it’s currently winning over thousands of music lovers.

A-Z ACTION BRONSON US

There’s one player in the game who’s willing to consistently rap about eating cereal. Give it up for the chef-turned-rapper Action Bronson! The 32-year-old rapper takes you back to New York rap when it was less about the bass line and much more about the fl ow. His lyrical universe is full of funny metaphors that involve topics such as food (of course!) and sports. On stage this selfdescribed hunk of beef is a powerful engine with a true ‘IDGAF’ approach. He’s funny, he’s heartfelt and he gets you rocking!

Alex Vargas has really raised up some attention over the past year with his delicate, heart-tugging vocals coupled with soulful electronic beats. He’s a master of conjuring up wonderful tunes that sound like modern classics in the making. Vargas recently released the EP Giving Up the Ghos t, which has spawned hits like “Solid Ground” and “Shackled Up”. When playing live Vargas projects a spectacle with an intense and versatile vocal range, which has the crowds swooning in and out of the palm of his hand.

If ever there was proof that you can reach rock’s premier league with 18 years of hard graft and a permanently sunny disposition it’s Biff y Clyro. The Scottish band have transformed themselves from a trio of left -field rocksters to masters of melodic stadium-sized rock. The albums Puzzle and Only Revolutions made the band everybody’s favourite. The brand-new single “Wolves of Winter” bodes well for what promises to be a ferocious new album (out just aft er Roskilde 2016) and high-octane

67 BLACK BREATH

Black Breath combines throat-shredding hardcore fury with a riffi ng style heavily inspired by Swedish death metal. With their latest declaration of disgust for humanity, Slaves Beyond Death (2015), the band has toned down the hardcore roots in favour of a more brutal metal approach. It’s simply meaner and more brutal. They deliver their catchy and intense brand of metal with an absolutely furious live assault which is sure to leave a lasting impression on your mind and body.

Blick Bassy is connecting the world with his African fusion music. He’s from Cameroon, lives in France and mixes West African musical styles with American blues and jazz. Blick Bassy has a remarkable voice that switches from a dreamy and soulful falsetto to a gutsy rasp. He sings in the Cameroonian language of Bassa and is backed by the unlikely combination of cello and trombone. Blick Bassy himself picks both guitar and banjo in minimalistic and delicate arrangements.

BLOOD ORANGE UK

Blood Orange will remind you of the stylish and romantic energies in pop and R&B from the mid1980s. The mastermind behind, Devonté Hynes, has a wonderfully soft and breathy voice which is well-suited to his band’s watery synthesizer sounds and popping slow-funk bass. Experiencing Blood Orange in concert is a ball. Hynes is a truly talented dancer on stage as well, moving in both sashays and slants and pivots. Reports from recent Blood Orange shows have revealed new tunes as well.

BLOOD SPORT UK

Polyrhythms + groove + punk attitude = Blood Sport. This Sheffield trio got together for a shared love of Fela Kuti and Afrobeat. The celebratory rhythms combined with soggy English weather results in something dark and very exciting. Jagged guitars entwine with shapeshift ing rhythms that ebb and fl ow and combine noise and colour and sound to a twitching perfection. When they play live improvisation is a key factor. Look forward to a late-night set that will combine groove and noise.

Blues Pills have taken all of Europe by storm. Fronted by the charismatic vocalist Elin Larsson and the young guitar virtuoso Dorian Sorriaux, the four-piece from Örebro digs into a hot-blooded, back-to-basics sound taken right out the 60s. You can hear echoes of Cream, Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin in Blues Pills’ hard-rocking sound.

BOMBA ESTÉREO

BOMBA ESTÉREO CO

It’s time for a big electro-cumbia party! Bomba Estéreo had their very fi rst encounter with a Western festival when they played Roskilde Festival in 2009. Back then we fi rst heard their red-hot tribal music with traces of Jamaican dub, Angolan kuduro and American hip-hop in a crossfield of samples, programmings and hand-played percussion. On their latest album they have come up with a big sound that adds a mainstream dance music feel to their electronic and often psychedelic take on more traditional Afro-Caribbean styles.

A FRESH PRINCE

Did you know that Bomba Estéreo is actually responsible for reactivating Will Smith’s otherwise mothballed recording career? Smith was traveling in Colombia with fellow musician and singer Marc Anthony when he heard Bomba Estéreo’s hit ‘Fuego’ playing, which proved revelatory. His management got in touch with Bomba Estéreo’s, enabling the fresh prince to spit his fi rst verses in a decade over a remix of their song ‘Fiesta’.

Bring Me the Horizon started out as a bone-crushing metalcore group, and in the course of fi ve albums they have grown more and more ambitious and widened their sound even more so. With a perfect mix of raging songs and sky-is-the-limit choruses there’s plenty of goodies for both metal heads and music lovers in general.

CATTLE DECAPITATION

CATTLE DECAPITATION US

The metal world is screaming its praise of Cattle Decapitation’s catchy extreme metal. The Californian band performs some of the tightest deathgrind conceivable – and they do it with a clear message! The band protests against the consumption of animals, the abuse of the environment and touch on subjects such as misanthropy and omnicide. Cattle Decapitation gets the message across with mind-melting metallic brutality – blastbeats galore, downtuned riff age and lots of gurgles’n’shrieks.

CHOIR OF YOUNG BELIEVERS DK

Choir of Young Believers has moved from the haunting piano-based hit “Hollow Talk” (thanks in part to the TV series “The Bridge”) across the all-daring and genre-defying album Rhine Gold. And now the band has shed its skin once again with the new album Grasque. The pompous ballads are replaced by a more experimental and sizzlingly hot R&B sound. Fortunately, front man Jannis’ unmistakable velvety and ethereal vocals are still an integral part of the sound. This is music to fall in love and sway along to.

WHAT’S IN A NA

Destroyer might seem like an oddly harsh name for such mellow music. In 2008, Bejar said about the band name: “I was actually so out of it I didn’t know that there was a Kiss record called Destroyer because I didn’t know anything about Kiss. I still don’t know anything about them. I just thought it was a cool rock-and-roll name, and I was kind of blown away that it hadn’t been taken already. 73 Coming out of the bustling Berlin electro scene, Dillon (full name Dominique Dillon de Byington) is a Brazilian songstress and pianist with a unique timbre and a captivating musical universe. The 27-year-old musician uses spare beats, subtle orchestrations and background-mixed brass in her beautiful compositions. Everything is bound together by a vocal that speaks to your soul. GHOST SE

Surrounded by his musicians called ‘nameless ghouls’, the demonic anti-Pope called Papa Emeritus III turns concerts into dark masses of sorts. A Ghost concert is truly something out of the ordinary! Ghost rocks hard enough to convince metalheads, and they have enough melodic sensibility to invite everybody else in. Ghost played one of their very fi rst shows at Roskilde Festival back in 2011. It’s about time to welcome them back.

Graveola digs deep into the experimental and whimsical pop sounds immortalized by Rio’s swinging 60s/70s tropicalia movement, which takes in various elements of jazz, funk, rock and soul to create a sound that is delivered in playful, laid-back sunbeams and with a modern, indie popinfl uenced twist. He comes from one of the windiest places on this planet, and the climate seems to have infl uenced this Icelander’s songwriting. Júníus Meyvant delivers acoustically based tunes with a folky foundation and a bit of soul feeling added to the mix. The music has caused a bit of a stir in his homeland with loads of airplay. Currently, Júníus Meyvant is working on his debut album which will see the light of day in 2016. Expect lots of fresh tunes when he visits Roskilde with a fi ve-piece band.

KALÀSCIMA IT

Kalàscima from southern Italy revitalises the ancient ritual of pizzica tarantata, said to cure the deadly spider’s bite with frenzied trance dancing. The Salento-based six-piece meshes traditional Italian folk music with alternate sounds coming from other genres such as Balkan, klezmer and Irish folk music. Kalàscima’s show comprises of many instruments such as the mandolin, Irish bouzouki and Calabrian double fl utes. The result is a marvellous type of dance music that will have you shaking a leg.

It’s not without reason that the Norwegian berserkers in Kvelertak have been called one of the most exciting live bands on the planet. They have made audiences gasp for air with their blistering blend of hardcore, black metal and high-octane rock’n’roll. Although Kvelertak’s stunning triple guitar assault is nothing short of crushing, unmistakable 70s rock tendencies leak through their barrage of metal. The Stavanger band has just been on tour with Slayer and Anthrax, so they are certainly welcomed into the big league.

Time and again Lars Vaular has been called the leading and most interesting rapper in Norway. That’s the critics talking and it’s impossible not to be won over by this special brand of hip-hop! 31-year-old Vaular raps in his mother tongue with a distinctive Bergen dialect (he’s even won an award for his creative use of that particular dialect!). It’s hard to mention the current state of hip-hop without bringing up Macklemore’s name. The 32-year-old Seattle native took the rap game by storm in 2012 alongside producer Ryan Lewis, with the debut LP The Heist – all while remaining an independent act. In 2016 the duo is gearing up again. The follow-up, This Unruly Mess I’ve Made, is out now, full of the kind of material that made us fall in love with the duo to begin with. You probably already know the infectious funk-driven rap song “Downtown” as well as the Ed Sheeran-featuring “Growing Up (Sloane’s Song)”.

MESHUGGAH SE

Few Hebrew words arouse the same joy of recognition among metal heads as Meshuggah, which translates to “crazy” or “mad”. And the madness burns intensely in these Swedes. Meshuggah plays a Scandinavianexclusive gig at Roskilde Festival.

METHYL ETHEL AU

Methyl Ethel is the uninhibited alt-pop project from Perth musician Jake Webb. Originating as an outlet for Webb’s now signature ambient, textural guitar experimentations, Methyl Ethel has since blossomed into one of the most critically revered and publicly embraced Australian acts in recent memory. There has been only one direction for Danish band The Minds of 99: Upwards. Since they first took our Rising stage in 2014 and last year’s powerful opening of the Orange Stage, this band has done nothing but advance and improve. When they opened Roskilde last summer, we got to hear some of the songs off the astonishing sophomore album Liber. Now, with that LP out, we believe that our audience deserves another round in the company of The Minds of 99 which is why they close Roskilde 2016.

MUELLER_ROEDELIUS DE

Beat-oriented compositions meet melodic improvisations when two unlikely partners team up for a quietly sophisticated blend of ambient and electronic music. Hans-Joachim Roedelius, known for the experimental band Cluster, has been instrumental to the development of avant-garde music. He teams up with Christoph Müeller from Gotan Project and together they present airy, meditative piano playing set to pulsating beats and soundscapes. It’s blissful and danceable at the very same time.

MURA MASA UK

Taking his moniker from a 16th century Japanese swordsmith, the productions of 20-yearold Brit producer Alex Crossan are razor-sharp with startling juxtapositions of elegant strings,

honeyed R&B vocals and deft drums. His songs are written out of heartache and he channels his emotions into some gorgeously downcast, glitchy garage-pop. Mura Masa came in fi ft h in this year’s edition of BBC’s trendsetting ‘Sound of ‘ list which more or less dictates who’ll make it big in 2016.

MUTOID MAN US

Mutoid Man started as a side project for two heady metal luminaries, Cave In’s Stephen Brodsky and Converge drummer Ben Koller. Brodsky lets the melodicism and metallurgy of Cave In concentrate into a amalgamated elixir of frantic fretboard work, big riff s and undeniable vocal hooks. Koller keeps battering his drums with rampant force and dexterity. Their debut LP Bleeder wholeheartedly embraces classic hard rock and cerebral progressive metal. In Mutoid Man these two often contradictory formats make perfect sense together!

MØ DK

Is there any limit to MØ’s success? It sure doesn’t seem like it! Ever since their debut album in 2010 Tame Impala has developed the psych-pop template. On the latest album, Currents, the band has turned it into something groovy and danceable. In concert the band is a massive, fl oating force, unafraid of diving into otherworldly jam sessions. TAME IMPALA · PHOTO: MATT SAV

94 TENACIOUS D US

Jack Black and Kyle Gass fi rst got famous when they sang about meeting a demon who demanded that they played “the best song in the world”. Filled with humour Tenacious D’s songs are a loving tribute to rock’s best incarnations. You can find cues from both Led Zeppelin, The Who and Queen. It’s no wonder that Dave Grohl is a fan and has insisted on drumming on all their recordings. Expect fierce strum-off s, funny stage antics and pure rock’n’roll.

TIKEN JAH FAKOLY CI

TUSKEGEE (SETH TROXLER & THE MARTINEZ BROTHERS) US

Seth Troxler is a figurehead for a new wave of underground electronic music. He has teamed up with the like-minded house heads The Martinez Brothers. Together they have established the label Tuskegee. The fi rst release is a collaborative eff ort by the label ed owners, which is a no holdstuskegee is nam barred monster of an acid jam, denafter all-Africa signed for maximum dance floor II W W n ica er Am hysteria. Reggae has been a major force in African music ever since Bob Marley visited the continent in the late 70s. Tiken Jah Fakoly is a stellar executioner of distinctive African reggae fusion. He is a social and political critic at heart, and he sings sturdily and angrily about the injustices in his home country where he’s a persona non grata. We’ve had the pleasure of Fakoly before. He is a fantastic performer, and it’s time to welcome back a true legend. We hope his home country will do the same soon!

TSJUDER NO

such as darkness, death and hatred. Everyone with a taste for corpse paint and hellish musical assaults, step into the stroboscopic lights as Tsjuder play into the night!

Spawned from the mother country of black metal we proudly present Tsjuder. The band was formed in Oslo during the second wave of black metal in the 90s, and they have added a defi ning touch to the extreme and ice-cold genre, which they mix up with waves of thrash riff age. Tsjuder delivers pure satanic black metal with lyrical topics

UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS UK

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats seem to be pinpointing the moment in time at which the darker end of psychedelia toppled over into proto-metal, and it’s rockingly joyful! The Cambridge, England foursome name-drop both Black Sabbath and The Beatles, and you instantly understand that this is for their primal heaviness and for melodic songsmithing, respectively. Similarly, front man Kevin Starr’s highpitched, adenoidal voice acts as a signifier for both Ozzy and Lennon. Add riff s galore to the equation and you have a winning recipe. TEN ACIO US D

WHITNEY US

After tenures in indie rock bands like Smith Westerns and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich’s songwriting partnership is now ripe. The Chicago-based duo has spent the last year-plus writing loping country-soul ballads as Whitney. There’s a special buzz about them right now and all the good things you hear about Whitney are probably true. They will win you over with heartbroken songs led by Ehrlich’s reedy, lovelorn falsetto and Kakacek’s sun-dappled guitar melodies.

VINCE STAPLES US

He’s the rapper-next-door and the dude you can chill with. He has broken down walls with his cool, confident-yet-relaxed vibe and musical hooks that transcend the rap genre. Wiz Khalifa’s pockets are full of green-tinged hits, e.g. “Black and Yellow”, “Young, Wild & Free”, “Roll Up”, “We Dem Boyz”, “Work Hard, Play Hard” and, of course, “See you Again”. The Pittsburgh rapper is wired, vibrant and ready for a return to Roskilde Festival. He’s ready to follow up on the smashing gig he played at Roskilde back in 2012!

PLAYLIST

Young Thug has exploded from Atlanta’s rap underground into worldwide consciousness. His unhinged flow, melodic half-sung, half-rapped drawl and dead-on hooks make his music intriguing. He is both the catchy pop-minded MC and the avantgarde rap innovator. For his live gigs, Thug has built up a stronghold of unbelievable heat. Usually, you see crowds yelling back the lyrics, word for word – that’s the level of dedication at Thug shows.

Known for his inventive blend of ancient Sami folk music, sounds from nature, diverse instruments (including saw, bells, viola, frame drums and guitars), Vassvik employs the traditional Sami practice of the joik, a long, slow, chant-style song formed deep in the throat. Often mournful, mysterious and hauntingly evocative, joiking may be Europe’s oldest living musical tradition, but as Vassvik delivers it, it could almost be mistaken for cutting-edge jazz-inflected vocal experimentation.

Vince Staples is the new voice of rap! He fi rst got attention after he was introduced as a fringe Odd Future affiliate. Since then, the 22-year-old rapper has established himself as a more calm and sinister presence. The debut LP Summertime ’06 sharply depicts the rapper’s teenage years spent running with a Crip gang, selling drugs and dodging police. It’s a tough social document but Vince Staples knows how to have fun while spitting his lyrics and it will surely rub off on the Roskilde people.

CARING ABOUT OUR FOOD

CARING ABOUT OUR FOOD FOOD and BEVERAGES WITH CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT and FOOD SAFETY

If you feel that we care about the food at Roskilde Festival you are not mistaken. The way human beings produce, distribute and prepare food is probably the largest single contributor to climate change, both in the world in general and at a festival. Actually, 40 % of the festival’s CO2 footprint comes from the meat we eat at the festival. That’s why we try to limit our impact on the environment. Roskilde Festival works with various contributors allowing us to vouch for the quality and environmental impact of their goods. Consequently, all dairy products at the festival are organic from the dairy producer Naturmælk, all the coff ee sold is organic from Peter Larsen Coff ee and the juice and wine available in every bar is also organic. Furthermore, we ask our food stalls to exclusively use organic pasta, rice, canned tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, carrots and lettuce in their meals. All food stalls are also required to have at least one vegetarian dish on their menus. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration is in charge of regulatory controls of hygiene in all food stalls, who also have their own sanitation controls as well as a programme to assist in the development of a better hygiene culture. This all sounds very reasonable. And in truth, we think it is.

#RFfood — A LARGE SELECTION

The approximately 150 food stalls and bars at the festival serve food and beverages, which cater to any taste, appetite or wallet while being mindful of the environment. You can choose between anything from the classic festival burger to an environmentally sustainable meal made from local produce. To wash it down you can get anything from beer and sodas to homemade milkshakes. We know there’s quite a diff erence in the size of the wallets our guests bring to the festival. That’s why the selection of food and beverages must include offers for the student living on study grants as well as the more well-off individuals with the coin for something extra.

HOW DO WE OD STALLS? CHOOSE OUR FO The festival has a group of volunteers who work all year selecting and maintaining relations to the food stalls. We have chosen the stalls for Roskilde Festival 2016 using six different criteria: — Organics/Sustainability: In 2016 it is our goal that at least 75 % of our food is organic. — Price: Participants who get by on student support from the government must also be able to eat their fi ll. — Quality: We would rather have freshly made food made from fresh produce than ready-to-serve, pre-cooked meals. — Realism: We select stalls that we know will be able to handle the pressure of running a food stall at Roskilde Festival. — Charity: We prefer stalls that use their profits for charitable purposes, i.e. sports or cultural associations. — Originality: We select new stalls that distinguish themselves from the existing selection of stalls.

CARING ABOUT OUR FOOD

Various associations and organisations run many of the food stalls, which ensure that profi ts benefi t charitable purposes. Others are run by professional caterers who also contribute some of their profi ts to the overall charity supported by Roskilde Festival.

This is where we test delicious new festival food concepts. Sustainability is an important focus with at least 75 % organic produce in the Food Court. The opening hours are the same as other food stalls and so are the prices.

THE FOOD COURT

The Food Court is situated in the southern hall next to the Gloria stage.

MERS

CO EXCITING NEW

Together with the best of last year’s food stalls, you will also fi nd the following new ones on the menu in 2016: — Ingen fest uden hest: The crew behind this food stall wishes to challenge our view on horse meat. Here you can taste a classic cowboy toast with a beef made from Danish horse meat instead of traditional oxe. — Mikuna: 40 % of the festival’s carbon footprint comes from the meat eaten at the festival. If this occupies your thoughts or if you are just hungry for something other than meat, try out Mikuna’s vegan burger or vegan dahl. — Madklubben: This year the popular Copenhagen-based chain of restaurants have joined the festival. They are offering a mouthwatering steak béarnaise sandwich or an organic wheat risotto. — TaTar: The good ol’ classic is now available at Roskilde Festival. Enjoy a classic steak tartare with fries if you need a break from the traditional festival food.

THE FOOD COURT

The Food Court is Roskilde Festival’s food laboratory which challenges the perception of festival food and works towards a continuous development of the choices of food available at the festival.

”Alexander has lived on rice and oatmeal for a year to scrape up enough money for this project. — Festival guests drank no less than 1 million litres of beer. — Festival guests ate more than 46 tons of potatoes in all shapes and sizes. — More than 645,000 cups of organic coffee were drunk. — Almost 7 tons of cucumbers were eaten at Roskilde Festival 2015.

The food truck trend rolled in at Roskilde Festival last year and it proved a huge success. This year we have doubled the amount of trucks, which means that 20 beautiful trucks will be set up at various places in the camping area and at the festival site. By Gate 5 near Arena a brand-new area with food trucks will be open during the warm-up days. We call it Arena Park. At the food trucks you can eat your way through Indian samosas, burritos, North African stew, organic tacos, hotdogs, ice cream and various breakfast offers from the mobile food stalls.

Environmental and social sustainability is important for Roskilde Festival. This also applies to food and beverages.

OUR INITIATIVES REDUCING FOOD WASTAGE

Working with the non-profi t organisation Det Runde Bord (The Round Table) we collect hygienically safe and usable produce that would otherwise be thrown out from the various food stalls. We then distribute it among shelters for the homeless and refugee centers where there are hungry mouths to feed. Some is delivered as produce and some food is cooked by volunteer chefs and frozen so that it can be distributed as pre-cooked meals ready to be heated and eaten. In 2015 we delivered pre-cooked meals and produce to 75 diff erent shelters in Denmark and during the last two years, we and Det Runde Bord have saved more than 50 tons food and produce.

A MOSTLY ORGANIC FOOD COURT

All the food stalls in Roskilde Food Court are required to use at least 75 % organic produce in their cooking. You will fi nd a handful of stalls that are +90 % organic as well as delicious vegetarian alternatives.

Naturmælk has made products especially for the hungry crowds at the festival. Due to popular demand (and maybe the delicious garlic bread at Rising City) they have made an organic ricotta cheese for this year’s festival. One natural and one with garlic/herbs fl avour.

A WINE OFFER YOU CAN’T REFUSE

The one-liter red and white wines are organic and brought in from Italy rather than from overseas. They are imported especially for the festival and come in FSC-labeled packaging, which is not only better for the environment but also gives the wine a longer shelf life (not that the latter should be necessary).

PHOTO: MARTIN KAUFMANN

EAT

FROM HAPPY COWS TO HAPPY CAMPERS

All dairy products (milk, butter, yoghurt etc.) at Roskilde Festival are from the Danish organic company Naturmælk. They work with 31 family-run farms in southern Jutland to produce high quality and environmentally friendly organic products. Many of them even work with biodynamic farming, which has even higher demands for sustainability.

SUSTAINABILITY CHANGING THE WAY WE EAT

CHANGING THE WAY WE

WE ❤ WATER

So do the children in Africa. In the East City and Rising City and on the festival site you can get water from Lovespring. And it’s not bottled and transported from a foreign country, it’s from right beneath our feet. Each time you get your water here you support LoveSpring’s work with water projects in developing countries.

ALLERGIES and SPECIAL DIETS

Every stall must display the contents of their dishes and be able to account for the ingredients. If you have allergies or just an interest in what you eat, you can always ask for the person in charge and have her/him list the ingredients. Roskilde Food Court near the Gloria stage is an ideal place to start if you have special needs. Here you will fi nd stalls specialised in fi sh, vegetarian, non-gluten etc. See page 99. SAFETY IN YOUR

CAMP

NO OPEN FIRE

The combination of nylon tents and open fi re is extremely dangerous, which is why it is important that you do not light any fires in your camp – neither during the festival nor when you’re leaving. The ban on open fi re also includes torches, candles, hurricane lanterns, cooking devices and barbecues – including disposable barbecues. At every agora you’ll find a cooking island and a communal grill for barbecueing your sausages, making soup or simply heating a meal. Please remember that it is absolutely life-threatening to light a gas burner in your tent, likewise it is not allowed to burn your tent, containers or other objects when you leave the festival.

IF YOU NEED HELP

If you need help during the festival you can address the campsite service attendants in orange vests. Furthermore, at all agoras service attendants are ready to help you and keep an eye on the camping area.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

If you’re in need of medical assistance at Roskilde Festival, please use the festival’s own fi rst aid stations. In case of life-threatening emergencies, call +45 112 or use the 112 app, which can track your position and make it easier for the ambulance service to fi nd you. However, the easiest way to get medical assistance is by contacting one of the campsite attendants, so please do so.

FIRST AID

First aid stations are located at East City and Rising City and remain open around the clock. There is also a fi rst aid station located on the festival site just west of Orange Stage. At the fi rst aid stations you’ll be able to store insulin and other medicine that requires cooling. First aid stations are clearly marked by a first aid sign. There is also an on-call doctor service at the fi rst aid station at East City.

There are thieves at Roskilde Festival, especially in the camping area, so we encourage you to take extra good care of your valuables and use the free cloakrooms at the agoras. Lock your tent with a padlock so your neighbours can keep an eye on it. You should also be aware of pickpockets.

in case of theft Report any stolen property at politi.dk. This also includes stolen wristbands.

EXTREME WEATHER

The Danish summer weather is capricious. It can change signifi cantly from sunny to stormy. Here are some precautions:

SAFETY

PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID

Psychological fi rst aid is also found at your nearest fi rst aid station. The investigative teams, the festival’s social workers, can be found on both the festival site and camping areas. All social workers have a relevant pedagogical, social or health professional background. They are easily spotted in white vests with the words “social worker” on the back.

AT THE STAGES

SAFETY

112 please help us with the following

SAFETY AT THE

STAGES

— Pay attention to – and follow – the safety information presented on the big screens at the stages and the guidelines from the crowd safety staff in the orange vests. — Pay attention to friends and people around you. — If you need help, or see others who do, please address the crowd safety staff. — Make sure to sleep, eat, and drink so that your body is supplied with rest and energy. If you feel unwell, or see someone else who seems to need help, address the festival staff.

PIT SYSTEMS

The pit systems in front of Orange Stage and Arena are safety constructions that make the concert experience safe for those of you who would like to be right in front of the stage. Show up early at the concerts since space is limited in the pit systems and there are many who would like to get in there.

A

B

C

D

DO NOT Being at a concert should never be boring, but it shouldn’t be dangerous either. Therefore, there are a number of safety requirements and precautions at all the stages at Roskilde Festival that we ask you to follow. For the sake of you and your friends.

TAKE CARE OF THOSE AROUND YOU

The safety at Roskilde Festival is continually evaluated to remove and reduce risks. We closely follow and participate in national and international developments in the safety field, but we still need your help to ensure that you and everybody around you gets the best and most safe concert experience possible.

— Crowd surf. Crowd surfi ng is very dangerous. Nobody likes your shoes in their face, and you might fall down or be trampled at worst. Crowd surfi ng is strictly forbidden at all stages and can cause immediate expulsion from the festival. — Form human chains. You put others at risk by creating unrest in the crowd. — Run or push to get in front. You create waves in the crowd and increase the risk of someone falling or getting crushed. — Sit on the shoulders of somebody. You risk getting hurt, and it ruins the concert experience for others.

113

The pit system entrances are located at both sides of Orange Stage and in the east side of Arena. At Orange Stage, there are two entrances to the four sections in front. If you want to go to sections B or D, you have to use the entrance east of the stage. The entrance to sections A and C is west of the stage. See the illustration opposite.

remember! Staying in the pit systems during concerts can be a very intense and physical experience. We ask that you only stay in there if you feel completely safe at all times.

NCERTS HIGH ENERGY CO Some concerts at Roskilde Festival call for moshing, wild dancing etc. We mark these with a ‘high energy’ icon. If you see this icon next to an act on these pages, expect the audience activity in front of the stage to be quite wild, and we want you to be careful if you choose to be up front.

AT THE STAGES

entrance to the pits

SAFETY

The green and red lights at the entrance tell you if there is free space available or if it’s full. You can’t stay in the pit between concerts since they have to be cleared and cleaned.

— We will allow moshing, dancing etc. at these concerts. — Do notice, however, that we do not allow crowd surfi ng.

PHOTO: ALLAN WÜRTZ LAURSEN

PROTECT YOUR EARS

You won’t get much out of Roskilde Festival if you can’t hear anything. If you experience a ringing or a buzzing in your ears you have to be careful – it’s a serious danger signal. Therefore – buy a set of earplugs. They can be found in all kiosks, drink stalls and merchandise stalls.

— In 2015 we removed 1,913 tons of garbage from the festival area — More than 1.5 million bottles and cans pass through our refund system every year — We use 200,000 garbage bags during a festival — About 2 million pieces of biodegradable cutlery is used at Roskilde Festival as well as the same number of biodegradable cups.

REACT — GET RID OF YOUR TRASH

We’re making it easier to keep Roskilde Festival clean and sustainable. ReAct is the name of our joint fight against garbage. You will find 11 recycling stations all over the campsite (see map on page 128), and there are garbage bins at every single camping quadrant and they are emptied by volunteers on a daily basis. At the recycling stations you can sort your waste (general waste, metal, glass, batteries and cardboard). The stations are open 24 hours a day and staffed between 09:00 and 16:00. Everyday a ‘Recycling & Waste’ parade will come through your camping area. Help the staff in the green vests to sort and dispose of waste. The volunteers also hand out empty trash bags for your camp and they take away your full ones, making it easier for you to keep your space clean.

we want your mattresses Did you bring an infl atable mattress to the campsite? Comfy, right? If you don’t want it anymore after the festival then please hand it in at our recycling stations.

CLEAN AREAS

Want to live cleaner and greener? The clean areas are for those who prefer green grass to broken glass and who would rather dispose of garbage rather than sit in it. The clean areas in B and K are “regular” areas where you can party as loudly as you want – but here everyone helps keep the area clean and comfortable. Area J is both clean and silent (no loud music after 22:00, please).

LARGE REFUND STALLS

This year we will be setting up two large stalls for those with big bags of empty cans and bottles for refunding. We even accept spirit and wine bottles with no deposit badge in these stalls. This helps us clean up the area as well. Find the refund stalls in areas C and L. Earn some cash and help us clean up. See more on page 122.

DONATE YOUR CAMPING GEAR

Let others benefi t from your old camping gear when you leave the festival. You can donate your tent, sleeping mats, blankets etc. to our CampAid volunteers. They are located at all recycling stations throughout the festival week and will make sure that your used gear will benefi t those in need.

When you visit area E and the southernmost part of area C this year, you will experience that it is not only our most festive area, but also one of the cleanest. This area is the home of Clean Out Loud. During the past six years, Clean Out Loud has been working CLEAN to change the culture around garOUT bage at Roskilde Festival through LOUD the community, festive garbage parades and creative events.

LET’S KEEP IT CLEAN

The mattresses cause great harm to the environment. They contain PVC plastic, which shouldn’t end up with the combustible waste we collect from garbage bins and the general campsite after the festival.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

This year we’re closing the festival site when the last concerts are over. That’s at 4:00 at night. We open the gates again at 10:00 the following morning. We do this to clear space for suppliers of beer, water, food, etc. and to clean up the site.

AGE

When you turn 15 you are old enough to explore Roskilde Festival on your own, but please remember that Roskilde Festival is a big city where everybody is partying all the time, so it is a good idea for you and your friends to stick together.

On the following pages we have gathered some useful information to help you get the most out of Roskilde Festival. Here you can fi nd information on everything from first aid and timetables to bottle refunds and parking. Some topics have their own dedicated pages elsewhere in the booklet. Remember: You can always get answers to any questions you might have at the information office.

ACCESS and WRISTBANDS

Your wristband gives you access to the festival areas so take good care of it. If your wristband is damaged or broken please contact one of the ticket offices at entrance East, West or the festival train station, where the situation will be assessed. If your wristband is stolen you must immediately report the theft to the police and then bring a copy of the police report to the nearest ticket office where the situation will be assessed. Stolen wristbands are usually not replaced by Roskilde Festival. Instead, you should contact your home or travel insurance provider for information about replacement of stolen wristbands. Anyone caught without a valid wristband in the festival area will be liable to pay a fee of DKK 3,500. When the fee is paid you will be offered a ticket to the festival without any additional charge if they are not sold out.

Please note that it is illegal in Denmark to serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 18.

AGORA

The agoras are the squares and meeting places of the diff erent neighbourhoods in the camping area. All agoras have a central meeting point, marked with a big letter. If you need any help, please contact the service attendants on duty here. The meeting points also help you navigate the campsite.

ATMs

You can fi nd ATMs at East City, Rising City and by the Pavilion stage. Furthermore, you can withdraw money at many stalls with Dankort. See more under Currency on page 118.

Read more about camping safety on page 110.

BICYCLES

You are allowed to ride a bike around the camping area, but the festival site is off limits for bicycles. You can park your bicycle at entrance East and West as well as just north of the festival site.

There are no requirements regarding spacing of tents on the campsite, but the fi re authorities require that there be at least 3 metres between caravans. Caravans will be guided into place by a service attendant. All fi re access routes must be kept completely clear from items and equipment such as tents, guy lines and rubbish. The fire service must be able to move around unhindered.
