WELCOME

Let’s

DO THIS!

Art is a universal language that brings people together. It deals with being human in this world. It puts words, pictures, sound and movement to things we find hard to express in other ways.

Increasing inequality, climate change, political instability... all reasons to look towards the world and take on a responsibility to make a difference and point to new opportunities for positive change. We need communities that bring people together. Roskilde Festival is such a community. For eight days it’s a unique framework for beyondmemorable experiences and a special free space where we can be the best version of ourselves, getting rid of everyday life - partying, inspiring new experiences and meeting new people. But also a free space where we can question and challenge the current framework. So, let’s do this. We hope you’re ready.

photo: Jakob Knudsen

We’re here together. Ticket buyers and volunteers alike. It’s all of us. We’re a community at Roskilde Festival. Together we create something unique.

And it can express what is not there yet. In this way it can open the world for us with new ideas about the future. It can display alternatives, and that’s what we need today.

LET’S DO THIS!

Roskilde Festival is a monstrous party. Ask anybody, there’s nothing like it. But Roskilde Festival is much more than that.

NEWS

NEWS AT #RF17

We’re going cashless

In 2017 we’re saying goodbye to coins and bills. You can still use your credit card (which more than 90 % of festival-goers do). But if you have brought only cash you need to put it onto a special cash card. Just head over to one of our cash card stations at the festival area and fill it up. Read more on page 13.

KlubRÅ

It’s really supposed to be a secret, so let’s keep this between us, ok? KlubRÅ is the place to be if you want to experience something really special.

They say opposites attract, right? That’s one of the ideas behind this brand-new club where art and clubbing fuse, and where each visit will give you a new experience. That’s all we’ll tell you for now. Ok, we’ll tell you a bit more on p. 32.

Celebrating the true Roskilde heroes

We’re looking for heroes among all participants at Roskilde. Especially groups of heroes. Those who do something extra for others. Do you know any heroes? Nominate them by posting their photo on Instagram. Add a description of their special deed using #RFheroes. In the end we’ll find five heroes (or groups of heroes) whose names will literally be carved in stone in front of Orange Stage.

So long, gravel pit!

It’s finally time to say goodbye to that big, gaping hole in the ground right in the middle of camping East. It has been a couple of years since it was filled but we’ve waited impatiently for the ground to settle and be ready for camping again. Now it’s time, so expect lots of extra space at camping East. Promise us that you’ll do some extra partying in camping area F. It’s time to celebrate!

photo: kim matthäi leland

East is our new stage

In 2017 East is not just a part of the campsite at Roskilde Festival. It’s also a brand-new stage located right next to East City. Look forward to a new platform for DJ sets, performances and party soundtracks. We have invited seven different crews to curate their own 6-hour slots, and you can expect everything from world music to psytrance. More info on page 52.

Do you know a true #RFHero?

10

DO YOU KNOW ANY TRUE

#RFheroes? We often speak of soldiers, firefighters and fictional, supernatural characters as heroes. In our opinion other qualities define being a hero - at least at Roskilde Festival. Extraordinary circumstances is not a prerequisite for heroism. It can be found in your camp, among fellow volunteers or even at a concert. Anyone can be a Roskilde hero! And we want to celebrate them!

nominate a hero: Instagram a story of that special deed. Use the hashtag #RFheroes.

An example of the nominations from 2016:

”We probably had the smallest camp in Dream City, a total of 3 people, and after only a day, our gazebo had flown away and it started raining. Our neighbours in ‘Kolonihaven’ invited us inside. A few days later our bags were stolen. Our neighbours in Kolonihaven miraculously found the bag. I can’t thank them enough. They are my #RFheroes <3” Luna Inaluk Nygaard

Definition

Definition taken from the yet-to-be-published Roskilde Festival Dictionary: hero noun / ‘hı .r ʊ / A person who helps or does a deed that makes Roskilde Festival better for others.

Roskilde walk of fame

You know the famous sidewalk in Hollywood with all the stars, right? Imagine a Roskilde version of that. Among all nominated heroes of Roskilde we’ll find five heroes (or groups of heroes) whose names will be engraved into a brass plate that will be glued on a tile in the area right in front of Orange Stage – as a celebration of everyone who goes that extra mile for the good of others at Roskilde Festival and in society in general. The #RFheroes campaign is made in collaboration with The Tuborg Foundation.

CASHLESS We’re getting rid of the dough at Roskilde Festival 2017. Well, almost. You can still bring cash to the festival but you will need to put it on a cash card in order to buy cold beers, delicious meals, ice cream and whatever else you savour. It’s quite simple: if you already use a credit card, keep using it. If you don’t have a credit card or simply prefer to arrive with cash (DKK, EUR, NOK, SEK, GBP, USD), you can transfer it to a cash card that you can use everywhere at the festival site. Here’s a short FAQ for those curious and interested:

What is a cash card and how do I get one?

You can use your cash card everywhere at Roskilde Festival to buy anything we sell. You get a card, you get a code and you spend as much as you find appropriate. All festival-goers can get a cash card. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or if you didn’t turn 18 yet. There are 5 different cash card stations where you can pick one up (see the map on p. 128). You can always transfer more money to your cash card (max. DKK 3000 at a time). No fees are connected to this card.

Can I get my unspent money back?

Of course. Both at the cash card stations (cash or transfer) and afterwards if you register bank or card data. Up to you. You can also donate unspent money to charity by putting your card in a box at the cash card stations or near the festival exits.

What if I lose my card?

We got your back. If you lose your card, it’s fast and simple to cancel the card. You can easily get a new one without losing what you already had on the old one. But if you are an anonymous user (which is perfectly fine) and you lose your card, it’s like losing cash.

I’m a sceptic! Are you sure it will work?

The system has been tested thoroughly, also at other festivals. We’re doing this because it will make things easier for the people buying and the people selling stuff at the festival. Which means everyone. In other words win-win. Want to know more? Visit roskil.de/cashless.

CHARITY

phono festival · photo: Daniel Hjort

The growth layer is so important for music. Besides always being on the outlook for new interesting acts for our festival, we support initiatives for exciting stuff in the underground. One of them is Phono: an annual festival presenting what they call ‘the sounds of the future’. The festival started in 2006 with a primary focus on younger artists shaping the development of electronic music. Phono takes place in Odense, Denmark. The festival isn’t connected to a specific venue or location but tries on new, exciting spaces every year, from slaughterhouses to crop silos. Phono’s line-ups are always uncompromising and they facilitate experiences you don’t see many of in Denmark outside of the Danish capital.

Roskilde Festival is 100 % non-profit. Every year we donate all of our profits to charity.

Did you know?

Phono is one of seven curators on our new East stage. Three other curators have also received donations from Roskilde Festival Charity Foundation: Manna, TAPE and Droz Daily Steezin; all of them important players on the underground scene who host and seek out leftfield musical acts and events.

A force for good for more than four decades

Since 1972, Roskilde Festival has donated more than DKK 320 million (approx. EUR 43 million) to humanitarian and cultural projects benefiting children and young people around the world.

EQUALITY

EQUALITY Everyday racism, religious marginalisation, gender equality and sexual identity. Roskilde Festival 2017 focuses on cultural equality. We look at how cultural equality is interpreted differently and challenged – both inside and outside of Denmark. We have teamed up with organisations such as Amnesty International, Dansk Kvindesamfund, MIX Copenhagen and Rapolitics. Several of the festival’s art projects and experiences also focus on cultural equality. You can hear an incendiary speech from Opal Tometi (co-founder of Black Lives Matter), draw a feminist, listen to forbidden voices and play with your expression of gender.

Activities Below you can read about some of the activities under the Equality banner at Roskilde Festival 2017. Check out the schedule on page 19.

Refugees of Rap and Paradise Sorouri

Rap concert with visuals by refugees today

Through art and performance, young people from Denmark with a refugee background meet in a community revolving around rap, poetry and spoken word as creative expressions and a constructive tool for dialogue, addressing prejudices, fighting discrimination and promoting active citizenship. Sunday 25 June 19:15-20.00 in Flokkr and Dreamcatcher.

It’s all about creating change. We believe that change in a community is best created together and that a festival can trigger and enhance a movement of people who see beyond themselves.

opal tometi, co-founder of black lives matter

WHY EQUALITY?

One of our goals is to help shape the world. Each year we choose a theme that deserves attention and where we believe we can help create insight, knowledge and change. In 2017, we focus on cultural equality. We do so because our opportunities and conditions in life are still influenced by the culture we are born into. Daily, many people face unfair treatment, harassment and discrimination based on their sexuality, gender, religion, ethnicity and cultural attitude.

ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

ARTS

Roskilde Festival’s art programme features worldclass art from both established and upcoming artists. We believe art can challenge us, push boundaries and engage people in conversation.

Mette Woller Head curator of arts at Roskilde Festival

This year we are paying extra attention to cultural equality and challenge notions of gender, identity and sexuality. We respond to a world where walls are built to divide and categorise people thereby insisting that everyone is born and should be treated equal. This is also reflected in the art you will find at the festival. Roskilde Festival is the exact opposite of the traditional white gallery space. We build temporary constructions and spaces with the intention of making you experience and reflect on matters you did not expect to encounter. We believe that art is and should be for everybody. You don’t need a degree to understand the art at the festival and we will surely challenge your idea of what art is and looks like. Just bring your curiosity and dive into a world of alien creatures, aesthetic explosions and scientific brain expansion: Feed an earthworm, see candles in bodily holes you did not expect, exchange liquids with other festival-goers or drink a coffee where both content and cup are works of art. We assure you that when you have read the next couple of pages, you will inevitably be drawn like a magnet. Welcome to Roskilde Festival ARTS.

“This year the art programme strives to make your brain cells spin and twirl rapidly. Our goal is to put traditional understandings of art into focus, flip it and reverse it.”

WARM-UP DAYS Forfatterskabet / The Authorship

The Alternate Anthropocene

Presented in collaboration with Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology

The alternate anthropocene

A team of “scientists”, dressed in orange-coloured suits inspired by 60s sci-fi kitsch culture, head out to dig up some special soil samples. Who are they and what do they want? The Alternate Anthropocene questions how scientific facts are spread and randomly presented – and often accepted unconditionally.

Multispecies playspace

Eben Kirksey is a researcher, artist and curator and he explores the meeting between people and other species. In the warm-up days the audience can partake in a social sculpture where they must “kiss” strangers by sharing a liquid, like ants do to share food. Kirksey also invites you to dive after frogs and investigate the swimming lake’s microbial underworld placed under a microscope. The project culminates with a performative talk on Saturday 1 July in Art Zone.

IN THE WARM-UP DAYS

We have invited the two Danish publishers Rosinante and Gyldendal to develop the collaboration Forfatterskabet (The authorship). Look forward to hearing a lot of powerful literary voices, both established and upcoming. In the warm-up days they just might come for a visit in your camp and read for you – or you can look them up in the Dreamcatcher in Rising.

VIKING BLÓT This year we’re throwing one h*** of an opening party at Roskilde Festival 2017. And we’re going back in time to the age of the Vikings. They’re our ancestors after all. On Saturday 24 June 2017 from 18:00 and onwards there’s one place you need to be. By the swimming lake at camping East. Here we’ll put on a viking blót. 7 viking bands will play, we’ll start a huge bonfire for you to dance about and we’ll serve mead (mjød in Danish). Bring your helmets, shields, ram’s skin and whatever else you need for a somewhat casual Viking attire.

Who’s playing?

Here they take on Norse folk music with beautiful harmonies that will surely crack the sky open.

ASYNJE DK employ electronic sounds and pul-

sating beats on a trip to our Norse roots. Nanna Barslev’s mesmerising voice opens the door to another time. Rustic old instruments conjure up grandiose, cinematic soundscapes.

SORTEN MULD DK had a commercial breakthrough

in the early noughties with their fairy-tale-like mix of techno and folk music playing songs from the Viking age. “Ravnen flyver” became a radio hit and Sorten Muld kickstarted a wave of new music. This is a rare opportunity to experience Sorten Muld live.

We’ve gathered seven different Nordic acts who have one thing in common: they’re following in the footsteps of the vikings. Each in their own way.

KRAUKA DK/IS will start up a mighty viking party led by charismatic singer Gudjon Gudmundsson. He sings old sagas with an impressive voice that will make the ground shake.

VIRELAI DK will deliver an audience-involving party

with elements of old Norse ballads, chain dance and acoustic techno – from the old market squares and straight to you.

PÄIVI HIRVONEN FI is a singer who plays the vio-

lin and an old Nordic lyre; an instrument used way back in the viking ages. In Hirvonen’s songs, power and emotion meet up, based on old traditions.

SONGLEIKR DK/NO are Christopher Juul and Maria Franz, known from acts like Valravn and Euzen.

svartsot

SVARTSOT DK started in 2005 as the only Danish

folk metal band. Now they’re one of the biggest around! They present a meeting between catchy tunes from the Middle Ages and melodic death metal. Downtuned guitars meet mandolin, bagpipes and flute.

ART ZONE

28

ART ZONE Art Zone is the epicentre of art at Roskilde Festival. You will find it east of Orange Stage in the space right by Food Court and Gloria. Below you can read more about the diverse experiences on offer this year.

So what’s in The Oasis, you ask? Let’s get it straight!

Rainbow worm

The Oasis

Lisbeth Bank’s portal to the oasis has been created in collaboration with the Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology. Made of wood, it’s like a colourful worm looking up, reminding us of the species below us and how we can work with them.

An oasis is an area that differs from its surroundings by its vegetation. When entering Art Zone you will physically feel that you are in an area that differs from the rest of the festival site. This Oasis is a total installation that consists of plants, trees and an integrated stage. This is not your ordinary museum. This is an organic exhibition, a place with an agenda, a place for you to dive into.

Danish artist Rune Bosse and Danish/Australian collective ThinkingHand have co-created the artwork Network, an open circle of six towers made of wheat roots through which smoke, light and sound are activated frequently during the festival – inviting you to participate in a sensual ritual.

The Oasis is conceptualised by the curatorial team and developed and produced by the architectural lab SLA in collaboration with Roskilde Technical College.

Killer Jellyfish

A helium balloon resembling a giant jellyfish. Tue Greenfort is highlighting our relationship to other species: Jellyfish are taking over the seas and have been called “killer jellyfish”. They are multiplying in an almost extreme way, causing several challenges for Mother Nature, not unlike other creatures (hint hint!).

Regitze Karlsen

When 130,000 people enter Roskilde Festival, the site transforms from an empty grass field to the fourth largest city in Denmark. Regitze Karlsen investigates this transformation from nature to culture with a work consisting of 15 sculptures made out of soil from the festival site. If you look closely you’ll discover the trash leftover from former years. What is also left is this question: what mark do we leave on the festival site and its existing nature and smaller inhabitants?

unworld

Unworld

Post-apocalyptic concrete sculptures, the very anti-thesis to the magical nature artist Line Falk so longs for. Her installation dissolves the line between creation and destruction, reminding us how the old world must die before a new one can be created from the remains.

Human-Tree-Machine

For the first time in the history of Roskilde Festival it’s possible to enter the judge’s tower and explore a total installation. Using sensors you will be able to chat with the surrounding trees. The project is a multidisciplinary and transspecies collaboration presented in collaboration with Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology.

Gillian Wearing

Renowned UK artist Gillian Wearing is known for her use of ”ordinary” people, including herself and her family, in her works. Through photography, video and sculpture she tells stories of identity and personal relations in a way that is both touching and unpleasant. In Trauma, her video piece at Roskilde Festival, she lets adults hide behind a child’s mask while sharing traumatic childhood experiences. Presented in collaboration with the National Gallery of Denmark.

Two powerful female voices

Meet two powerful female voices from the musical lineup of Roskilde Festival 2017 in Art Zone: —— Madame Gandhi talks about challenging the existing gender systems —— Princess Nokia talks about her groundbreaking work with female empowerment

Everything in there is an artwork: from the space dividers hanging in the ceiling made by Richard John Jones to the loungers made by Merete Vyff Slyngborg to the coffee bar, which is a mobile exhibition originally started in Cameroon where the famous artist Barthélémy Togue is from. Togue states how art can be a social and cultural gesture that makes a difference. Come down for a coffee and ask how. Even the coffee cups are an art work by Japanese artist Natsuko Uchino.

Remember to check out the arts programme for the warm-up days as well. Many of the acts performing in the warmup days also visit art zone.

KlubRÅ

Progressive art and music merge in

KlubRÅ

1200 square metres. Five unique rooms. An abundance of performance artists, musicians, DJs, dancers and much more. KlubRÅ is a club experience unlike anything previously seen at Roskilde Festival, combining concerts, performances, video art and installations. The five rooms are inspired by the five energies of yin and yang: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The five rooms create an overwhelming and cutting-edge universe taking on themes such as equality, sexuality, gender, ethnicity and the human relationship with body and technology.

Queer collective, K-pop and everything in-between

Entering KlubRÅ, festival-goers will encounter Danish artist Emilie Alstrup’s synthetic sci-fi world and a sound piece composed by experimental producer WHY BE.

If you venture deeper into the club, American performance darling Ligia Lewis will create an energetic, animal-like performance surrounded by a rain machine, DJs and a light show. Plenty of shocks and surprises await when queer collective Young Boy Dancing Group creatively combine candles, body openings and much more. Several musicians from the music programme take part in KlubRÅ, including feminist rapper Princess Nokia, M.I.A. drummer Madame Gandhi and Arcade Fire front man Win Butler AKA DJ Windows98. EXP will deliver the first ever K-pop tunes at Roskilde Festival whilst young string ensemble DUEN offer a concert with 30 musicians surrounding the audience in the club. Kenton Slash Demon – consisting of members of When Saints Go Machine – are preparing an electronic show that includes a vibrating steel construction. Meanwhile, Jomi Massage will activate the audience with a ritual that involves sculpting. These are just some of the things you can experience in the club, but the key element is surprise and the unexpected: going through KlubRÅ, you will experience different things at different times. KlubRÅ is made in collaboration with Tuborg.

Graffiti has been an important part of the artistic expression at Roskilde Festival since 1999 when we first introduced the art form. The festival is visited by graffiti and street artists from all over the world who collectively spice up 1.5 kilometres of fences and facades. Graffiti artists with more than 15 different nationalities and from four different continents will decorate Roskilde in 2017.

Roskilde Walls

With Roskilde Walls we show our take on mural art as it is seen around the world. Roskilde is challenged by the lack of tall buildings, so instead we’re creating 4 giant boxes at the festival site for this particular project. Given the huge size and high quality of the works they become quite the eyeopener and act as unofficial meeting points and landmarks for everybody. Look forward to works by Lush (AUS), Dvate (AUS), Jayn (D), Stereoheat (D), Aches (IRL), Brave (UK), Brandon Lewis (US) and Stine Hvid (DK). Find them by the sails and on your way towards the Arena stage.

Aiko is one of the most influential and popular street artists in the world. Moreover, she is one of few women in a male-dominated subculture, but for many years she has belonged to the elite in her field, unfolding one major proexplore ject after another. Aiko was the graffti part of last year’s Roskilde Festival where she did two at Roskilde Festival smaller works. In 2017, we’ll on Instagram via give her the biggest of canthe hashtag vases. Aiko will decorate the #RFGRAFF 100-meter-long grandstand wall in front of the Orange

STREET CITY

36

STREET CITY Eager for some urban, concrete bustling activities? Street City is the place to be! We’ve divided our area into two different spots with events and activities you can both gaze at or participate in. We call them Street and Game. In the Game area you can engage in almost any kind of sport, ranging from the very slow like yoga and petanque, to more action-packed basketball, volleyball and football. Football has moved from sand to grass this year. We also offer slackline, panna football and table tennis. Look forward to daily tournaments in basketball, volleyball and football and the Orange Karma Cup Tuesday where you can win tickets to Roskilde 2018. Each goal scored in the tournaments results in a donation by Roskilde Festival to GAME Denmark’s work with sports in socially burdened residential areas. So start hitting that goal! If you are an early bird, then start your first yoga session at 9 – new sessions start every hour.

In the Skate area (almost) everything exciting on wheels happens. The bowl is filled with skaters, inliners and BMXers. The talented practitioners also move to the asphalt for both flatland and street contests. Our resident DJ will wake you with cool tunes from 11, and the rolling program starts at 13. If you want to learn the cool tricks or just some balancing skills on skateboard or inliners, then come join our two workshops. Every evening, the rolling programme ends with a dance workshop and a dance battle hosted by The Funktastics. Get a crew together and put on a dance show for the audience (they’re the jury so don’t hold back!). Quest Juan is ready to decorate you in our bodypaint workshop. Here you can be painted with the tattoo you never dared to get, a flower, a tribal or something entirely else. You can even swing the brush on your friends. A daily resident DJ will play until 21:00 every night.

In search of the best sound For the 8th time 100 engineering students from Technical University of Denmark will descend on Roskilde Festival with around 20 projects aimed at improving festival conditions even further. Since 2010, we have tested the sound levels at the festival. This year, we measure acoustics around Orange Stage as well as inside Gloria Stage. We do so in order to help festival guests enjoy the best possible sound.

We also have projects featuring waste sorting, lighting, analysis of water and electricity use, parking and games to raise awareness of alcohol consumption. All aimed at improving the overall festival experience - and all initiated by DTU students. You can find out more about the projects in DTU’s TechLab located between Avalon and Orange Stage by Trade Zone West.

RELEASE YOUR INNER MAKER

RELEASE YOUR INNER

MAKER

Maker is a DIY area where we celebrate maker culture and invite every festival-goer to make cool gadgets and personal festival gear, repair their broken gear, interact with new technology, participate in a Japanese robot wrestling tournament and hang out.

Workshops: Knowledge is not enough. You need skills.

This year you can sew LED lights into your shirt to pimp up your dance or shred plastic and make a tent peg, make your own festival furniture, a ‘camp blaster’, print on T-shirts, make a crappy robot and much more.

Make: Tech-equality

Come hear what Nikolaj Sonne from Danish TV programme “So Ein Ding” thinks about surveillance and what Mariano Alesandro from INDEX thinks about the gender distribution in the tech industry. Or contribute to creating the voice of #rf17 by adding your voice to the voice synthesizer or listen to the music created by worms!

Play with tech

Of course, you can also play with technologies such as laser cutters, 3D printers, VR glasses, soldering irons, LED lights and much more.

Afterparty

Tuesday is afterparty night. SkeletonMan will throw a psychedelic DJ show and let the guests dance wearing the luminescent shirts they created in the workshops. Before the DJ show, we will throw the traditional Hebocon tournament where crappy robots fight until death do them part.

You need skills!

This year, Maker is teaming up with KEA (Copenhagen School of Design & Technology). We want to show you how a creative and innovative mindset can give you endless skills in creating your own sustainable way of life. In that sense this also gives you a taste of the maker festival Copenhagen Maker that takes place 7-10 September in Copenhagen. opening hours sunday 25 june-monday 26 june tuesday 27 june wednesday 28 june-friday 30 june saturday 1 july

GOING CLASSICAL

42

GOING CLASSICAL — AND untraditionally so

Classical at Roskilde

Every year we present a handful ‘only at Roskilde’ type of shows - unique setups that you can only experience here. 2017 is no exception. This year we’re challenging the standard concert format classically speaking. Who says the band has to be on the stage and you on the floor? We’ve invited Tivoli Copenhagen Phil to come play a concert at Roskilde Festival. Classical music at Roskilde Festival is special in itself. But at the same time it calls for a twist. “We have a tradition of giving people something that’s a bit left-field compared to what they’re used to. Presenting classical music in a special set-up is a part of it,” says Roskilde booker Peter Hvalkof. The 60-and-some members of the orchestra will play inside the big Arena tent. Forget all about the stage. They’re gearing up on the ground in the middle of the tent. And the best thing? You get to walk among them while they’re playing.

This year isn’t the first time Roskilde Festival has flirted with classical orchestras. In 2008 Copenhagen Phil (back then named Tivolis Symfoniorkester) had their first appearance at Roskilde, and since the early 90s we’ve had the pleasure of classical acts like Kronos Quartet, Balanescu Quartet, The Danish National Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Danish Opera.

Did you know...?

The term ‘classical music’ didn’t appear until the early 19th century in an attempt to distinctly canonize the period from Johann Sebastian Bach to Beethoven as a golden age.

“This is no normal concert. The orchestra plays what they call a mixtape, moving from one end of the classical spectrum to the other. And you’ll get to meet them at eye-level!” says Peter Hvalkof.

Music gives you goosebumps, desire to cheer and makes it impossible to stand still. Music moves you because multiple parts of your brain must tune in to process one single tone – and a great concert sets all emotions free.

This year, Dansk Live and Roskilde Festival beat the drum for letting the music be your high – skip the heavy drinking and avoid drugs. Read more at againstdrugs.dk Experience our live experiment when Phlake is opening the Orange Stage 28th of June and see how a fan’s brain is influenced by music.

THREE TAKES ON PSYCHEDELIC METAL FROM FINLAND

TOWARDS HELL AND OUTER SPACE

three takes on psychedelic metal from Finland

Oranssi Pazuzu · photo: Rainer Paananen

45 Barack Obama 44th President of the United States

We’ve prepared a late-night slot with three bands from Tampere who have one thing in common: they turn the dark Finnish hours into a mesmerising, horrifying and trance-inducing distillation of metal. Say hello to PH/Mr Peter Hayden Band, Oranssi Pazuzu and Atomikylä. “The metal scene in Finland is really buoyant at the moment. Some of the most interesting bands right now have grown out of the same rehearsal space, which they have dubbed Wastement. They are a collective, sharing members across bands. All bands have in common that they play metal, but they reference many other genres like space rock, ambient, prog, psych, doom and black. Collectively, they will make your head spin!” promises Roskilde Festival booker Stefan Gejsing. PH/Mr Peter Hayden Band, Oranssi Pazuzu and Atomikylä will play right after each other. And if you dare step into the darkness of the Gloria stage room, you will be sent off on a long-distance interstellar journey through sound. Peter Hayden Band will whip up a storm of cosmic doom, Oranssi Pazuzu will aim for more atmospheric postblack metal sound trapped somewhere between heaven and hell and Atomikylä will close down the pitch-black night with lengthy psychedelic jams.

“Finland has perhaps the most heavy metal bands in the world per capita and also ranks high on good governance. I don’t know if there’s any correlation there.”

Did you know…

We first learned about the Wastement collective when we booked the doomsters in Dark Buddha Rising back in 2014. In fact, the band Atomikylä consists of members from both Dark Buddha Rising and Oranssi Pazuzu.

THREE TAKES ON PSYCHEDELIC METAL FROM FINLAND

One might think that the sun never rises in Tampere, Finland. At least if you are to judge from the sounds of the city’s underground metal scene.

A SING-ALONG INVITATION Come sing your heart out! We’re clearing the Gloria stage for this very purpose – for all your voices, deep, high, shrill, loud and quiet ones alike. This is the fourth year of this new, strong tradition. In 2014 we sang Pete Seeger songs as a celebration of community and the idea of the song as a tool to share opinions and knowledge as well as to change the world around us.

The repertoire is made up of songs from all decades – classic songs filled with emotions, which are very recognisable and easy to sing along to. This year we’ve added an extra theme for the occasion: fallen heroes. We’ve lost so many great musicians in 2016 and 2017 (David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Prince being some of them), and we want to sing their praise.

Now we’re trying to define the Roskilde songbook.

So, come on over and sing along with all the rest of us. Everyone’s invited – even if you’re convinced that you can’t sing.

We asked all you Roskilde-goers for input before the festival, and this year’s songbook has been put together based on your suggestions.

CHALLENGING THE GENDER SCALES

50

CHALLENGING THE

GENDER SCALES With 175 atcs in the line-up, more or less every possible genre is covered. Yet, one thing gets the attention of many. The gender scale. With acts like Solange, Halsey, Angel Olsen, The Savage Rose and Hun Solo in the line-up, you can point out more female artists on our stages than you could last year and the year before. But male musicians still make out the majority, and they dominate many of the genres that we like to prioritise, e.g. metal and hip-hop. We’d like to help change the gender balance. It’s in everybody’s interest that music and future talent development are characterised by gender equality and reflects the general population. However, we cannot change the balance in an instant, and the balance between women and men on our nine stages won’t change significantly in 2017 or the following year. It’s a fact that fewer girls than boys choose a career as a professional musician. On the Danish music scene female musicians make up 20 %, and the tendency is the same all over the world

We, as a festival, are the ‘last stop’ in a long chain, stretching from music schools to choosing a career. When girls opt out of music schools and choose other ways in life, we can’t book them for our festival. For the same reason we don’t believe in gender quota because quota won’t change a fundamental structural imbalance in the music business. What we can do is look for artists who go against these mechanisms. Artists who can function as role models. We have booked artists for their fantastic music and live energy. But they have something on their mind that goes beyond themselves when they address gender diversity, equality, civil rights and, not least, women’s rights.

When peaches played at Roskilde Festival last year, her show carried an explicitly f eminist message. We continue this theme in 2017.

PSYCHEDELIC SUNDAY Hosted by Daily Dak

Between Saturday 24 June and Tuesday 27 June the stage will be serving up music in all kinds of flavours. It will keep your feet busy and your head tripping! We have invited seven different crews to curate their own 6-hour slots, and you can expect a little bit of (almost) everything. From world music to disco, from psytrance to hip-hop. Here’s what’s on:

FAT BREAKS & JERSEY Hosted by Emil Lange & Eloq

Emil Lange and Eloq team up to focus on Jersey Club – a genre that has become increasingly popular in recent years with representatives like Ryan Hemsworth, DJ Hoodboi and Cashmere Cat. The genre, which evolved out of (well, you guessed it...) New Jersey’s nightclubs, is a bouncy and bass-heavy house-influenced style, which makes it extremely difficult to stand still.

Back in 2015, there was a camp at Roskilde Festival with 15 lads who came up with the extraordinary idea of spreading the electronic music genre psytrance all over Denmark. Two weeks after the festival they created the Facebook page called Daily Dak, and today it’s one of Scandinavia’s biggest outlets for the psytrance genre. line-up time in motion, joel rowdy, morten granau & phaxe, daily dak

Her stage name could be straight out of a fairy tale. The sound of Ariadne “Ary” Loinswortha’s brand of abstract electro pop certainly also qualifies as an epic soundtrack. Her music deftly treads the line between club and bedroom aesthetics, and she’s slowly winning over the music world.

AYOWA DK

AyOwA is an electronic pop duo consisting of longterm friends and musical partners Nicolai Kornerup and Hannah Schneider. They make atmospheric pop tunes in minor on old reel-to-reel tape recorders and modular synthesizers, accompanying Schneider’s dusky and airy vocals, all in Danish.

BOGFINKEVEJ DK

Bogfinkevej conjures up acoustic-based melodic rap music in what is one big homage to the town of Aarhus. Their mission is simple: to have fun and keep things unpretentious. Bogfinkevej comes at you without phoney attitudes. The Danish trio has taken social media by storm, first by jamming a home-recorded version of “Smilets by” online.

farveblind

FARVEBLIND DK

The young producer duo Farveblind (translates to colourblind) has grown out of the Aalborg-based music collective Lydtaet, and now they’re about to break down walls on the music scene with their cloudy, bass-heavy and acidy sound. The duo’s ambition is to unite the patterns and grids of electronica with a human touch.

IRAH DK

‘The sky is the limit’ is an idiom, which really suits IRAH’s music. The Copenhagen-based trio makes heavenly music with moods big enough to fill the biggest of festival tents. IRAH’s special brand of alternative pop is, according to themselves, inspired by everything from traditional ceremonial music to modern melodic songwriting.

KORNÉL KOVÁCS

Stockholm-based producer Kornél Kovács is on a mission to bring good times back to house music. And he succeeds in doing so! For the past seven years Kornél Kovács has been busy rocking dancefloors and boomboxes worldwide, while developing a quirky aesthetic that draws freely from disco, Italo, freestyle, house and easy listening.

MATTIS DK

What a voice! The Danish artist Mattis has that deep, soul-filled glow in his vocal cords that can go both valley-deep and mountain-high and sing every word with intense emotion. Mattis’ aural universe fuses pop, electronic music and soul. If you have ever dug the music of James Blake or Sam Smith, you should definitely not miss out on him.

Finding inspiration in acts such as MF Doom and Action Bronson, front man Sebastian Bang Monti spits rhymes in an impressive flow and in an American dialect that would make you believe that he comes out of the Big Apple rather than the Danish city of Aarhus.

NOAH CARTER DK

Established Danish artists such as Ukendt Kunstner, Gilli and Kesi have rapped about him on their own tracks, and S!vas has played Noah Carter’s unfinished demos on Danish national radio. His debut album Couch Tracks sounds like a mix-up of hazy R&B and Atlanta trap somewhat in the same vein as Bryson Tiller. Do not miss out on this big talent!

PURPURRPURPLE NO

Annette Kvithyll aka Purpurrpurple (it’s a name you want to say over and over!) is a star on the electronica sky. She has blessed countless clubs and festivals around her home turf of Norway, making her one of the most experienced DJs on the country’s party circuit.

SILVESTER DK

Silvester has been dubbed as this summer’s beachy soundtrack. And judging from the single “Oceans” you have plenty of foamy waves (pun intended) to dive into while sipping some summery beverage. Silvester adds loads of beyond-catchy pop their groovy R&B and they are unafraid of taking on kitschy elements as well.

skott

SKOTT SE

Growing up in a forest commune, Swedish singer Skott thrived in an environment run by ‘outcast’ folk musicians. It’s not often you see international music blogs unanimously rave about a newcomer the way they do about Skott. Also, bigwigs such as Lorde and Katy Perry have expressed their fandom of this Swedish singer. You will too!

SNOW BOYZ NO

Snow Boyz have turned internet wires red-hot in their native Norway. Baby Marley and $k!p’s Atlanta-inspired, hard’n’hazy tune “42” has become a strangely indispensable rap hit. Snow Boyz started out speed-rapping in English, but soon turned to a special Afro-version of Norwegian, slowing down their rap to a drawl. A winning recipe!

AUÐN IS

Hailing from the village of Hveragerði in southern Iceland, Auðn was founded in 2010 and has become recognised as one of the most talented bands from the burgeoning Icelandic black metal scene. Unlike many of their brethren Auðn shed the jarring and caustic approach to black metal in favour of haunting melodies and bitter atmospheres.

BARSELONA DK

A beautiful friendship and Roskilde Festival. That’s how the band Barselona (yep, with an ‘s’) was formed. Rud Aslak and Rasmus Theodor went to Roskilde Festival in 2016 and that kindled a desire to create their own music. A mutual interest in pop music and a general longing for the warmer climates of southern Europe got the band started.

DØR NR. 13 DK

Copenhagen sextet Dør nr. 13 started out playing 70s-leaning psychedelic rock full of twirling colour patterns, a kaleidoscopic outlook and poetic Danish lyrics. Having grown in popularity, the band has developed their sound as well, stripping away the psych fringes and moving towards a post-punk approach with rock music’s tradition for great choruses and catchy guitars still close to their hearts.

FRANSKE PIGER DK

baest · photo: jonas petri

BAEST DK

Untamed powers are at play when the band name is Baest. The Danish word means (you guessed it!) ‘beast’, and these beasts deliver old-school death metal with nods to both Entombed and Bloodbath as well as American pioneers like Death and Obituary. The Aarhus-based band knows how to make the ground quake and tremble.

The lads in Franske Piger (which translates to ‘French Girls’) aren’t old enough to have experienced the 80s. Nevertheless, the youngsters have delved deeply into the layers of music history and uncovered sounds from era of pastel-coloured aesthetics, Pac-Man and mullets which they treat with a special interpretation.

If you came to see slowdive, fugleflugten also ought to tickle your fancy.

FUGLEFLUGTEN DK

Fugleflugten adores Scandinavian melancholy, guitar notes ringing into eternity and dreams about flying over the rooftops. The Copenhagenbased four-piece mixes reverbwrapped guitars, synth washes, hazily layered shoegaze with bits of

59 ML BUCH

Those guitars! They have that sharply pointed sound that pricks right into your skin. Sparse guitar treatment with just the right crunch and sound of danger. ML Buch is a singer, guitarist, field recordist and the one-woman engine inside this exciting project with a new and sometimes experimental approach to alternative rock music.

MODEST DK

hater · photo: matilda arborelius

HATER SE

They aren’t as loathing as their name might suggest. In fact, we can reassure you that this band inspires nothing but love. Hater writes cutesy guitarbased indie pop that tug at your heartstrings with feelings of heartbreak, regret and hope. Almost as if taken out of the secret great indie songbook.

NATJAGER DK

THE KUTIMANGOES DK

Natjager combines a hard-hitting post-hardcore sound with an uncompromising full-on use of autotune. Jon Kirkhoff Hansen (aka Sluzh), who has a past in the Danish hip-hop group Specktors, has teamed up with a group of musicians from the rock scene, and together they have come up with this special sound, that is both rough and melancholic, all at the same time.

THE LOVE COFFIN DK

Jascha Kreft and Tammo Dehn started out just like the rock’n’roll genre did: With a foundation in blues. But the Berlin band quickly moved onwards. They wanted to see just how much they could cram into an eclectic yet defined sound. Psychedelic rock, blues, grunge, kraut, bubblegum, post-punk… it’s all there and it’s a wonderful jumble.

This six-piece consists of three brass players, two drummers and one man at the keys. The band has also added singer Patrick Kabre from Burkina Faso to the mix and together they conjure up sunlit West African-style party music! The KutiMangoes are experienced musicians and an astonishing live band.

Rock music and desperation have always been a perfect couple and the Copenhagen-based outfit The Love Coffin excels in matching the two. They look towards the 80s post-punk scene, drawing inspiration from bands like Gun Club, Green On Red and Killing Joke, but you can just as much taste the dust from the open desert plains as you can feel embraced by the darkness saturating their sound.

ODD COUPLE DE

PARDANS DK

Pardans kicks in the door with quite a spectacle and a songbook full of devil-may-care post-punk tunes referencing the likes of The Birthday Party and The Pop Group. If you think of Iceage as a filthy-but-wonderful poetic voice of a generation, chances are that you’ll absolutely love Pardans. This sextet is exclusively for the open-minded.

RISING

Modest is a brand-new band out of the Danish city of Aarhus. They started out a few years back and have now started to stir up a bit of a buzz. The Danish quartet finds inspiration in 1980s British indie rock with distorted and jangly guitars and dark crooning vocals. Fans of bands like The Chameleons and The Smiths will definitely feel at home.

POM POKO NO

Take some punk attitude and combine it with a nerdy knowledge of pop history. Add sugary singsong vocals, intense grooves, bouncy guitars and quirky riffs. That sort of adds up to the recipe for arty Norwegian band Pom Poko. Fans of bands like Deerhoof and Le Tigre should take a step closer!

SCHOOL OF X

DK

Rasmus Littauer usually plays the drums for MØ and a wide range of Danish bands. With his solo project School of X he composes, records and produces everything single-handedly. Engaging in dream pop with minor synth chords, airy vocals and a general sense of longing, School of X proves itself to be a very interesting encounter.

SHITKID SE

ShitKid is the one-woman project of 24-year-old Gothenburger Åsa Söderqvist, a former feministpunk front woman who reinvented her sound on a series of home recordings posted to Soundcloud. In concert Söderqvist takes the front-centre part of the stage with a dance-y, careless approach, flanked by a guitarist and a keyboard player.

Sibiir’s music takes inspiration from the Norwegian black metal scene while being rooted in hardcore – a poisonous dose of music with both aggression and muscle. With punishing pace, a beyond-heavy

ŞTIU NU ŞTIU

ŞTIU NU ŞTIU SE

“Beauty and ugliness need to co-exist, carefully written melodies need to be destroyed by distorted mayhem”. So reads a manifest from the core members of Ştiu Nu Ştiu who grew their aesthetic from the minor chords of The Cure and blackgaze. Amidst ear-bursting layers of reverb and distortion, Ştiu Nu Ştiu builds up a snow globe of sound.

TVIVLER DK

Members of esteemed Danish punk and hardcore bands (namecheck: Lack, Obstacles, Town Portal and Children of Fall) founded Tvivler as a shared outlet for venting frustrations and rocking out. Tvivler squeezes as much energy as they can out of one guitar, one bass and a drum kit – and singer Thomas Burø’s high-pitched and ill-tempered belting.

VÆRKET DK

This six-piece sounds like a vital 2017 update of the golden age of prog rock. Fans of Yes, King Crimson and Jethro Tull should prick up their ears. Clad in gaudy shirts and long hair the members take a stage like they own it. With a transverse flute often stealing the attention Værket play up big, complex songs that often pass the 10-minute mark.

Say hello to 47SOUL – rooted in Palestine – known for a politically-conscious style of Arabic dance music they call shamstep, a mix of traditional music like dabke and electronic elements. The new sound of 47SOUL has rapidly amassed fans in the Middle East and Europe by blasting the electric Arabic sound through underground music scenes. The lyrics, mixing Arabic and English, call for celebration and freedom in the struggle for equality, inside Bilad Al Sham and throughout the world.

And they have an agenda – to make you listen to their distinctive ghostly flows about the dirty, rain-soaked street life. 67 have gate-crashed UK music’s commercial landscape and they are gaining a mass following online, which is evident by their YouTube view count soaring into the millions. Their rapid ascent to fame follows the path of the likes of Stormzy and Section Boyz.

‘68 US

Stripped-to-the-bone aggressive rock is on the menu when American duo ‘68 crank up the guitar amps, whip the drums and scream their hearts out. With throat-shredding screams, torrents of windmilling guitar (Josh Scogin brings more amps to a show than most people!) and controlled-spasm percussion, the duo churns out aural, emotion-laden chaos. In concert, facing each other on stage, the duo emits massive energy, and the chemistry between the two is hypnotically telepathic when they jam their songs into special in-concert climaxes.

75 DOLLAR BILL US

NYC instrumental duo 75 Dollar Bill delivers an unholy mix of Mississippi juke-joint nastiness, Maghreb hypno-riffs and Velvets drones. Deep in this melting pot the duo crafts swirling, crosscultural epics that will surely appeal to all fans of everything between psych, stoner rock, jazz and blues, and it’ll have you freaking out (in a good way!). The means may be simple but their meandering space-drone blues and leftfield percussion create an atmosphere that floats somewhere east of Venus, and it’ll have you grooving forever.

63 After a decade-plus working their way up the Warped Tour roster, honing a unique, unlikely blend of metalcore and pop-punk, these Floridians put out their sixth album in 2016. The gambit has paid off. A Day to Remember has hit no. 1 on Billboard’s Rock, Indie and Alternative Charts, they’ve sold more than a million units, garnered two gold-selling albums and singles and sold out entire continental tours. This band supplies the energy, stage presence and tightness that more than invites for dancing and moshing. They will certainly make their day at Roskilde one to remember!

Acid Arab’s set of bangers delivers no matter which side of the globe you’re from. Come experience how the meetings of cultures – and music traditions – can blend together and deliver something refreshingly new.

Less rhinestone cowboy than maverick journeyman, alt. country songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan’s CV covers everything from proto-punk to Southern rock. Tasjan is perfectly capable of quieting a room with storytelling songs and acoustic fingerpicking, and when joined by a full band he will have you rocking and shedding a little silver tear. His material is that good!

HIGH ENERGY CONCERTS

Some concerts at Roskilde Festival call for moshing, wild dancing etc. We mark these with a ‘high energy’ icon. If you see this icon next to an act on these pages, expect the audience activity in front of the stage to be quite wild, and we want you to be careful if you choose to be up front. —— We will allow moshing, dancing etc. at these concerts. —— Do notice, however, that we do not allow crowd surfing.

Afenginn’s mix of Scandinavian folk music, Balkan sounds and touches of classical music is like a magic teleporter transporting you away. The instruments speak a clear and loud language, which one minute is misty and mystical and the next has you rocking away and jumping up and down. Against Me! plays with fury and rage, with punk rock as the foundation and visits to both rock’n’roll, power-pop and more. The band are just as seasoned as any road-dog stadium-rock pros, and after nearly two decades they still play with the brawny life-or-death urgency of a snarling basement hardcore group.

Andy Wilson is a man of monikers. Working under names such as Andras Fox, András, A.R.T. Wilson, Wilson Tanner etc., the Australian producer creates tactile and imperfect electronic music. Finding inspiration in 80s Library Music, house and ambient music, House of Dad brings warmth, relaxation and smooth grooves to your ears. It’ll be exciting to see how he transforms his tunes in a live setting.

The Montreal six-piece’s next album Everything Now is out soon, and word has it that the band is looking towards a disco sound.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER US

Tristan Shone has always loved to build robots and machines. With a background in electro-mechanical engineering and sculpture, Shone sets himself apart as a performing artist in a unique way: a man on his own, surrounded by the great beasts of machinery he created. You won’t see a drumkit or any guitars. Only home-made electronic instruments. The array of throttles, levers, knobs and sliding devices make Author & Punisher resemble some kind of sci-fi control room. In this self-imposed cage, Author & Punisher really comes alive.

A

Combining the speed and fury of hardcore punk with the prominent guitars and vocals of heavy metal, Anthrax helped create a new subgenre of metal back in the early 80s. Today they are one of the renowned ‘Big Four’ thrash metal bands, ranking alongside Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth. On stage there are essentially three front men vying for your attention, with Joey Belladonna pacing across the stage with his trademark half mic-stand and kibitzing with the crowd, Scott Ian stomping in his own little onstage mosh pit and bassist/natural energy source Frank Bello head-banging wildly.

ATOMIKYLÄ

We’ve prepared a late-night slot with three Tampere bands who have in common that they turn the dark Finnish hours into a mesmerising, horrifying and trance-inducing distillation of metal: Atomikylä, PH/Mr Peter Hayden Band and Oranssi Pazuzu. With songs stretching beyond the 10-minute mark – and live going further still – these Finnish noisemongers aim for a droning, repetitive, aggressive and psychedelic sound that is meant to be played loud. Which they do. You’ve been warned.

Comprised of Eloq, Unkwon and DJ E.D.D.E.H., Av Av Av is something of a Danish electronic supergroup. Av Av Av first played here a couple of years ago on the Countdown stage. In 2017 we’re welcoming them back. And they have a special guestlist ready for this particular show. Imagine the worlds of Fever Ray and Julee Cruise, and we’re somewhere near the ambitions of aYia. The Reykjavík band’s emotional electro with barely-there vocal sighs, dramatic synths, ambient whooshes and pulsating backbeats display euphoria and dreams as if painted on a canvas in slow motion.

THE AVALANCHES AU

Long before psych rock was a trending genre, there was Baby Woodrose. They’ve had many members, but the leader, guitarist, singer and songwriter Lorenzo has kept this well-oiled machine running for 16 years now. With a bulging back catalogue, countless live shows all over Europe and a general reputation as the perhaps best thing out there in the psych rock department, Baby Woodrose now stand as titans, trailblazers and godfathers for a whole new generation of young bands who have a preference for fuzzy guitars, kaleidoscopic colour patterns and funny-tasting substances.

BCUC ZA

BCUC is a seven-piece from Soweto, South Africa, playing ‘ancestral’ trance-funk that aims to make you bop your head and dance while putting your fists triumphantly in the air! The group is very vocal about the harsh realities of poor workers in South Africa, and their message is often political. The songs are full of various kinds of percussion, whistles and flutes, which makes out a scarce and powerful sound canvas. The tunes are led by vigorous vocals that from time to time sound like manic priests urging you to pay attention to their incantations in Zulu, Sotho and English.

BICEP UK

London-based, Belfast-born blogger/production/ label/DJ duo Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson need little by way of introduction if you’re a fan of house music. Bicep’s bustling, hard-edged, multi-layered beats are irresistibly danceable. They expertly manage to mix in disco and techno into their house-y sounds, they can strip back to a more melodic vibe and hit it hard! The party will surely meet mountain-high peaks when they take on our Apollo stage with a special live show.

These Bergen-based noise-mongers’ post-hardcore sound is a first-class call to arms, combining rock’n’roll riffs with a snotty punk sound. With hammering beats, jarring guitars and soaring melodies, Blood Command sound both ticked off and offended! You can tell that they are fans of bands like Refused and At The Drive-in. “Pissed Off and Slightly Offended” is the title of the opening song off the band’s album Funeral Beach. A very apt description of this raging band!

BONOBO UK

Try this genre on for size: ambient world electronica. If you think it sounds very left-field, we can tell you that streaming reports show an explosion in popularity of this particular subgenre. Bonobo creates hazy, flowing music , equal parts subtle, rich and with an organic feel that is the result of layering live instrumentation over his samples and electronics. Bonobo keeps an organic vibe as he favours live recording over solely computerised production. This gives the music a very vibrant groove, which translates perfectly to a live setting.

BRYSON TILLER US

24-year-old singer/songwriter/rapper Bryson Tiller has emerged from Louisville with his own brand of street soul that blends the urgency of trap music with the smoother sound of alternative R&B. He’s a loverman fluent in hip-hop gesture and a soul singer whose cadences let rhythm rule over croon. To say he sings like a rapper is no insult – on some songs he even delivers his own guest rap verses. Don’t miss him – and start learning those lyrics because Tiller shows tend to be huge singalong sessions.

CANCER DK

Nikolaj Vonsild (the voice of When Saints Go Machine) and Kristian Finne Kristensen (Chorus Grant) proved to be a great musical match when they introduced their collaboration in 2014. The meeting between Vonsild’s haunted and ethereal vibrato and Kristensen’s calm croon as well as the latter’s guitar fingerpicking sounded like a true electroacoustic summer crush. The band put out their critically acclaimed debut album, Totem, earlier this year. Cancer is like an intoxicating journey into a landscape with endless possible destinations.

CARL EMIL PETERSEN DK

Since the breakthrough of Danish rock band Ulige Numre back in 2011, it has been crystal-clear that singer-songwriter Carl Emil Petersen is a not just promising but a truly unique songwriting talent. He finds inspiration in denim-clad heroes such as Springsteen and John Hiatt as well as Danish 1970s singer-songwriters, and he adds plenty of indie edge. When Carl Emil takes the Arena stage he will play a set containing both old hits and brand-new, unheard material.

A lot of Haley Fohr’s musical life has happened under the name Circuit Des Yeux. Since she was a teenager, Fohr, who’s now 28, has been a kind of one-woman post-cabaret movement, using fingerpicked folk guitar mesmerisation, synth ripples and aggressive drone chords. As Circuit Des Yeux she channels complex narratives and emotions, fuelled by slow-burning arrangements and her dark, evocative, semi-operatic voice. She accompanies herself with a 12-string acoustic guitar and controlled labyrinths of samples.

CLAMS CASINO US

Few producers have had as big an impact on hiphop as Clams Casino (real name Michael Volpe). With his early 2010 productions for Lil B and A$AP Rocky he became the figurehead of a sound that came to be dubbed ‘cloud rap’ – a woozy, hefty, synth-soaked re-imagining of classic hip-hop. Working behind a laptop and a mixing deck and with a dramatic light show to accompany the juddering force of the beats, Clams Casino knows how to work his crowds into a dancing ecstasy.

ELZA SOARES BR

For Elza Soares time doesn’t seem to matter. By the time she visits Roskilde Festival she will have just turned 80. In Brazil she’s simply known as the Queen. Born in a rough Rio favela, Soares was hailed as one of the city’s greatest samba queens in the 1950s. In concert Soares looks like a true sci-fi diva, dressed in fantastic space-age garments, wearing a huge wig and sitting atop a pitch-black throne from which she gets big crowds to sing and dance. Don’t expect classic samba here. Expect something entirely different.

ERASURE UK

“A Little Respect”, “Always”, “Blue Savannah”, “Love to Hate You”… the hit list goes on and on. You won’t find a lot of music out there more purely distilled as chart-conquering synth-pop than the music from the competent hands of Andy Bell and Vince Clarke – collectively known as Erasure. Being at an Erasure concert is a unique and flamboyant experience, like a recreation of the closely packed communal euphoria of an 80s nightclub. To be properly savoured, the duo’s music demands that inhibitions be shed. So put on a glittery hat, throw off your T-shirt and just engage in this pop mania.

73 Everything has turned out right for Joshua Tillmann. You may know him best as the Father John Misty persona. A tongue-in-cheek, wry and drugcrazed Casanova. Misty played at Roskilde Festival in 2015, and it’s safe to say that he put on one of those unforgettable shows that people are still going on about. 36-year-old Father John Misty has since then been busy working on his third album, Pure Comedy. The rapper crafts demanding rhymes celebrating the struggles of the gangster life, which somehow transform into damned near motivational ballads about surviving and succeeding in the ghetto at all costs.

Under the artist name Hieroglyphic Being, Jamal Moss produces wonderful outsider house music with a signature oddity. His genuine interest in degraded sonic textures and damaged rhythms makes his lo-fi tracks sound both pockmarked and cobwebbed. In fact, one record store sold his albums with a note reassuring customers that these weren’t manufacturing errors. If you’re up for some off-the-grid, four-to-the-floor club music that fires up the mind and soothes the soul, don’t miss out.

High On Fire puts heavy in heavy metal – a genre label so generic that nobody uses it anymore. However, it fits this Oakland band like a glove! Matt Pike is the walking embodiment of heavy metal and High On Fire, formed in the wake of his seminal 90s doom outfit Sleep (who played Roskilde last year), revels in metal tradition. They’ve cemented themselves as modern genre heroes and their live reputation makes up a large part of that status. ICE CUBE US

Ice Cube is one of gangsta rap’s key artists. He came out of the seminal group N.W.A. where he was chief lyricist and acted alongside Dr. Dre. If you’ve watched the 2015 biopic “Straight Outta Compton” you already know of their importance. When Ice Cube went solo in 1989, he continued writing hard-hitting gangsta rap that pushed buttons in the media, among parents, politicians and the police. He went on to become perhaps the world’s biggest rapper in the 90s. He has also been busy in the film industry, but he has always kept his main outlet, music, close to his heart. JULIA JACKLIN AU

Julia Jacklin is one of those rare, unspoiled voices who skillfully laces elements of alt.country into haunting indie folk vignettes. Jacklin’s hyper-specific observations are melded with the familiar old ache of a broken heart. Julia Jacklin’s smoky voice has an ability to create such an amazing depth and warmth, despite being relatively soft-spoken. It has made her performances (she’s recently been the supporting act for Whitney) make concert halls go all quiet, concentrating on her storytelling.

JUSTICE FR

You won’t find many electronic artists from the last decade who have been as influential as Justice who are back after a five-year album break. Justice are notorious for setting dance floors ablaze with speaker-buckling synths and clobbering beats while diverting the testosterone of rock into dance music. So let’s do them justice (sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves…) and set up their decks, their amps and the rest of their stage gear and prep a huge party on Orange Stage.

KAREN ELSON UK

Karen Elson first became known in the music world with the album The Ghost Who Walks which is full of chilly murder ballads, southern gothic meditations and bewitching tales of stolen lovers and lost dreams. Now she has come home to her English roots. She has written songs from her own perspective and with a new sound. On the new album Double Roses Karen Elson has pushed her songs more in an orchestral folk-pop-noir direction. A stunning live presence, and in her new live set-up Elson’s windswept folksy tunes are also accompanied by a classical harpist.

KELLERMENSCH DK

Kellermensch have always been appreciators of darkness, and they make a light shine up from down there. The sound is fit for big arenas and their popularity has only been on the rise. Kellermensch has been labelled a “must-see experience on stage”. Intensity and desperation go hand in hand in a sophisticated rock expression, and lead man Sebastian Wolff’s presence on stage can sometimes look like some kind of spiritual exorcism. Fans of everything from Nick Cave to Arcade Fire must not miss out on this black butterfly.

La Mambanegra (meaning the black mamba) is no ordinary salsa outfit. Indeed, band leader Jacobo Vélez prefers to believe that they inhabit a genre all their own. As innovative as their recordings are, they’re even better live, their full-throttle shows overflowing with absolute commitment. They have been highlighted in Billboard as one of the Colombian bands you need to know about.

The future is female! From running the 2015 London Marathon on her period, free-bleeding the entire way, to writing an EP’s worth of electro music that decimates patriarchy, Indian-American producer and activist Kiran Gandhi proves that personal is indeed also political. Kiran’s drums (did we mention that she’s been a drummer for M.I.A.?), vocals and percussion are backed by the intricate electronic soundscapes developed by Alexia Riner. It is simply mesmerising to watch and listen to.

Drawing on frequently bleak autobiographical subject matter, this new Nashville star makes irresistibly vibrant and life-affirming music. The 34-year-old singer-songwriter just owns a stage once she steps onto it, delivering her songs with great confidence and her splendid backing band has an easy proficiency born of a decade paying their dues on the Nashville circuit.

MODERAT/MODESELEKTOR DE

An integral piece of the Berlin nightlife takes over Roskilde Festival. This special set-up with Moderat and Modeselektor is a ‘only at Roskilde’ type of gig. Moderat is a hybrid band of Modeselektor (Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szazy) and Apparat (Sascha Ring). Stellar electronic music with soul, made for the dark of night. It’s full of insistent beats to keep your feet busy, and their song-driven material speaks to fans of both electronica, pop and indie. Modeselektor are stalwarts who forge some of the most intelligent, progressive, wellconstructed dance music in the contemporary scene. This will be a total experience of sounds, lights and visuals (and lasers!) that will suck you in and have you dancing for three hours straight!

Mixing elements of electro, chill-wave and tropical house, Møme serves up a summer cocktail that makes you want to dance all night long and leaves you yearning for more. Møme’s debut album Panorama recently saw the light of day. Judging from the well-deserved hype around the artist, he’s bound to make it big.

WIKI US

The sooty atmosphere, the complex rhyme structure, the tactile combination of claustrophobia and swagger: New York rap is a religion in decline. That makes Wiki’s devoted practice of it all the more striking. 23-year-old Wiki is known as the main rapper in Ratking (they played Roskilde in 2015). His voice is raspy and nasal and he clusters his syllables tight as if huddling under a large coat in cold weather. He has won over fans among hiphop traditionalists and new-school disciples alike.

YOUNG M.A US

OOOUUU! That’s not just an exclamation. It’s an infectious, clubby ode to living nice, smokin’ loud and gettin’ money. It’s amassed over 100 million Spotify streams and 200 million YouTube plays. It’s been remixed and remade by Nicki Minaj, The Game, Meek Mill and more. Young M.A is the artist behind it. After bubbling in the underground for years, Young M.A has taken the New York rap scene by storm. Everybody wants a glimpse of her shooting off her bangers, going a capella or freestyling.

THE XX UK

The xx started out as teenagers who invented an atmosphere entirely of their own. It all began with their collective love for electro and R&B which mutated into a spacious and sophisticated brand of pop. In the past few years, Jamie XX from the group has gotten a lot of press. Now he’s back with his mates Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim for a third chapter in the story of The xx. I See You is the band’s new album and – as usual, dare we say – it has reaped stellar reviews. If you want to see how intimacy plays out in the biggest of settings, then you shouldn’t miss out on this subdued power trio.

CARING ABOUT OUR

FOOD

FOOD and BEVERAGES THAT CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT and FOOD SAFETY

If you feel that we care about the food at Roskilde Festival you are not mistaken. The way human beings produce, distribute and prepare food is probably the largest single contributor to climate change, both in the world in general and at a festival. Actually, 40 % of the festival’s CO2 footprint comes from the meat eaten at the festival. That’s why we try to limit our impact on the environment. Roskilde Festival works with various contributors allowing us to vouch for the quality and environmental impact of their goods. Consequently, all dairy products at the festival are organic from the dairy Naturmælk, all the cof fee sold is organic from Peter Larsen Kaffe and the juice and wine available in every bar are also organic. Furthermore, we ask our food stalls to exclusively use organic pasta, rice, canned tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, carrots and lettuce in their meals. All food stalls are also required to have at least one vegetarian dish on their menus. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration is in charge of regulatory controls of hygiene in all food stalls who also have their own sanitation controls as well as a programme to assist in the development of a good hygiene culture. This all sounds very reasonable. And in truth, we think it is.

#RFfood — A LARGE SELECTION

The approximately 150 food stalls and bars at the festival serve food and beverages, which cater to any taste, appetite or wallet while being mindful of the environment. You can choose between anything from the classic festival burger to an environmentally sustainable meal made from lo cal produce. To wash it down you can get anything from beer and sodas to homemade milkshakes. We know there’s quite a difference in the size of wallet our guests bring to the festival. That’s why the selection of food and beverages must include offers for the student living of study grants as well as the more well-off individuals with the coin for something extra. Various associations and organisations run many of the food stalls, which ensure that profits benefit charitable purposes. Others are run by profes sional caterers who also contribute some of their profits to the overall charity supported by Roskilde Festival.

The festival has a group of volunteers who work all year selecting and maintaining re lations to the food stalls. We have chosen the stalls for Roskilde Festival 2017 using six different criteria: —— Organics/Sustainability: In 2017 it is our goal that at least 90 % of our food is organic. —— Price: Participants who get by on stu dent support from the government must also be able to eat their fill. —— Quality: We would rather have freshly made food from fresh produce than ready-to-serve, pre-cooked meals. —— Realism: We select stalls that we know will be able to handle the pressure of running a food stall at Roskilde Festival. —— Charity: We prefer stalls that use their profits for charitable purposes, i.e. sports or cultural associations. —— Originality: We select new stalls that distinguish themselves from the exist ing selection of stalls.

The Food Court is Roskilde Festival’s food labora tory which challenges the perception of festival food and works towards a continuous development of the choices of food available at the festival. This is where we test delicious new festival food concepts. Sustainability is an important focus with at least 90 % organic produce in the Food Court. The opening hours are the same as other food stalls and so are the prices. The Food Court is situated in the southern hall next to the Gloria stage.

EXCITING NEWCOMERS

Alongside the best of last year’s food stalls, you will find the following new ones on the menu in 2017: —— Danish Tapas: Try new Nordic cuisine in small easy-to-eat tapas sizes. You’ll get a tour of classic Danish servings such as ‘Hønsesalat’, poached egg on potato and creamy cucumber soup. —— Sisters Cuisine: The NGO Trampolinhuset serves a wide selection of food from around the world. Try some spring rolls or daal while supporting a great cause. —— Hooked: If you are looking for high quality seafood this is the place. Here you can get a tempura shrimp wrap served with mouthwatering fries. —— Crick’it: ‘Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup!’ At Crick’it any insects found in your food are there intentionally. In many parts of the world, insects are a key part of the food supply. This year we bring them to Roskilde Festival!

Fresh vegetable omelet? Steamed mussels? Or fish and chips with homemade remoulade? In the FoodJam kitchen you decide the menu and start cooking once you have selected your produce from the bountiful buffet of fresh organic vegetables, fruit and fresh fish. FoodJam’s culinary counselors are on hand to help and the price is ridiculously low. A jam session lasts one hour. Tickets are bought at the entrance where you can book in advance or go straight to the kitchen. We recommend booking in advance if you plan a visit between 12:00 and 19:00 – especially in the warm-up days. FoodJam is located in East City and has the official Golden Organic stamp (90-100% organic). It is created in cooperation with Madkulturen and Coop. A new addition to FoodJam 2017 is the concept ‘Eat Up’, which takes place in the camping area. Here FoodJam chefs will cook a strong soup using the leftover fish bones from the jam sessions. As a participant, you can spice the soup whichever way you like. Nothing goes to waste at FoodJam 2017! For more info and tickets, visit madkulturen.dk.

CHANGING THE WAY WE EAT

SUSTAINABILITY

102

CHANGING THE WAY WE EAT

Environmental and social sustainability is impor tant for Roskilde Festival. This also applies to food and beverages.

OUR INITIATIVES Reducing FOOD WASTAGE

Working with the non-profit organisation Det Runde Bord (The Round Table) we collect hygienically safe and usable produce from food stalls that would otherwise be thrown out. We then distribute it among shelters for the homeless and refugee centers who have hungry mouths to feed. Some is delivered as produce and some food is cooked by volunteer chefs and frozen so that it can be distributed as pre-cooked meals ready to be heated and eaten. In 2015 we delivered pre-cooked meals and produce to 75 different shelters in Denmark, and during the last two years we and Det Runde Bord have saved more than 50 tons of food and produce.

We ❤ water

So do the children in Africa. In East City and Rising City as well as on the festival site you can get water from Lovespring. It’s not bottled and transported from a foreign country, it’s from right beneath our feet. Each time you get your water here you support Lovespring’s water projects in developing countries.

From happy cows to happy campers

All dairy products (milk, butter, yoghurt etc.) at Roskilde Festival are from the Danish organic com pany Naturmælk. They work with 31 family-run farms in southern Jutland to produce high quality and environmentally friendly organic products.

Many of them even work with biodynamic farming, which has even higher demands for sustainability. Naturmælk has even made products especially for the hungry crowds at the festival. Due to popular demand (and maybe the delicious garlic bread in Rising City) they have made an organic ricotta cheese for this year’s festival. One natural and one flavoured with garlic and herbs.

103 2015 45 % organic produce across all food stalls 2016 75 % organic produce across all food stalls 2017 90 % organic produce across all food stalls

This year all food stalls at Roskilde Festival will have a minimum of 90 % organic produce, some might even reach a higher level. In collaboration with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration we have made our very own Sustainability Stamp. This means that you can keep track of the level of organic produce at every food stall across the festival.

So this year you can eat your burger with a healthy – and sustainable – conscience!

SUSTAINABILITY CHANGING THE WAY WE EAT

OUR OWN SUSTAINABILITY STAMP

Since 2011, Roskilde Festival has had an ambition to increase the level of organic produce across all food stalls. During the festival, the 130,000 participants consume a lot of food which takes up the greatest part of Roskilde Festival’s environmental impact. By increasing the amount of organic produce, we can secure a more sustainable festival.

FOOD JUNGLE Allergies and special diets

In East City, FoodJam allows you to compose your own 100 % organic meal for just DKK 50 (see page 100), and Dream City provides an outdoor DIY kitchen.

NAVIGATING THE FOOD JUNGLE

Every stall must display the contents of their dishes and be able to account for the ingredients. If you have allergies or are just interested in what you eat, you can always ask for the person in charge and have her/him list the ingredients.

Roskilde Food Court near the Gloria stage is an ideal place to start if you have special needs. Here you will find stalls specialised in fish, vegetarian, non-gluten etc. See page 99.

FOOD IN YOUR APP

It can be difficult to remember just where you saw that chicken tortilla or the Asian noodle salad you desperately need. No need to worry, it’s all in our official Roskil de Festival app. Here you can easily search for food eve rywhere on the festival grounds. You can filter the results after type of food, and if you’re craving something now, the app can help you find whatever is closest by. Our app is available for iPhone and An droid. Just head to App Store or Google Play and search for Roskilde Festival.

USE #RFFOOD and HELP OTHERS

If you instagram your favourite hangover burger or tip your vegetarian friends on Facebook about the best veggie meal at the festival, remember to use the hashtag #RFfood so others can find and use your tips as well.

CAMP

No open fire

The combination of nylon tents and open fire is extremely dangerous, which is why it is important that you do not light any fires in your camp – neither during the festival nor when you’re leaving. The ban on open fire also includes torches, candles, hurricane lanterns, cooking devices and barbecues – including disposable barbecues. At every agora you’ll find a cooking island and a communal grill for barbecuing your sausages, making soup or simply heating a meal. Please remember that it is absolutely life-threatening to light a gas burner in your tent, likewise it is not allowed to burn your tent, containers or other objects when you leave the festival.

If you need help

If you need help during the festival you can address the campsite service attendants in orange vests. Furthermore, service attendants are ready to help you at all agoras and they also keep an eye on the camping area.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

If you’re in need of medical assistance at Roskilde Festival, please use the festival’s own first aid stations. In case of life-threatening emergencies, call +45 112 or use the 112 app, which can track your position and make it easier for the ambulance service to find you. However, the easiest way to get medical assistance is by contacting one of the campsite attendants, so please do so.

First aid

First aid stations are located at East City and Rising City. There is also a first aid station open around the clock on the festival site just west of Orange Stage. At the first aid stations you’ll be able to store insulin and other medicine that requires cooling. First aid stations are clearly marked by a first aid sign. There is also an on-call doctor service at the first aid station at East City.

Psychological first aid is also available at your nearest first aid station. The investigative teams – the festival’s social workers – can be found on both the festival site and camping areas. All social workers have a relevant pedagogical, social or health professional background. They are easily spotted in white vests with the words “social worker” on the back.

EXTREME WEATHER

Watch out for thieves

There are thieves at Roskilde Festival, especially in the camping area, so we encourage you to take extra good care of your valuables and use the free cloakrooms at the agoras. Lock your tent with a padlock so your neighbours can keep an eye on it. in case of theft Report any stolen property at politi.dk. This also includes stolen wristbands. If you have an iPhone, remember to download the Find My iPhone app. It will help the police track down your phone if stolen. For Android users, we recommend Prey, which offers a similar service. Download at preyproject.org.

The Danish summer weather is capricious. It can change significantly from sunny to stormy. Here are some precautions: in case of heavy rain —— Dig ditches around your tent. —— Don’t pitch your tent in the lowest point in the terrain. —— Keep the spirits high. in case of thunder —— Don’t seek shelter under trees, especially not single trees. —— Avoid towers and open squares. —— Don’t touch electrical conductive objects, e.g. fences, railings, faucets or appliances connected to electricity networks. —— It’s reasonably safe to use your phone, but remember you’re holding an electrically conductive object in your hand. —— Avoid swimming in the swimming lake. —— Start humming AC/DC’s ”Thunderstruck”.

Do not light bonfires in your camp, neither during the festival nor when you are on your way home.

AT THE STAGES

SAFETY

110

SAFETY AT THE

STAGES Being at a concert should never be boring, but it shouldn’t be dangerous either. Therefore, there is a number of safety requirements and precautions at all the stages at Roskilde Festival that we ask you to follow. For the sake of you and your friends.

The green and red lights at the entrance tell you if there is free space available or if it’s full. You can’t stay in the pit between concerts since they have to be cleared and cleaned.

TAKE CARE OF THOSE AROUND YOU

The pit system entrances are located at both sides of Orange Stage and at the east side of Arena. At Orange Stage, there are two entrances to the four sections in front. If you want to go to sections B or D, you have to use the entrance east of the stage. The entrance to sections A and C is west of the stage. See the illustration opposite.

The safety at Roskilde Festival is continually evaluated to remove and reduce risks. We closely follow and participate in national and international developments in the safety field, but we still need your help to ensure that you and everybody around you gets the best and most safe concert experience possible.

entrance to the pits

please help us with the following —— Pay attention to – and follow – the safety information presented on the big screens at the stages and the guidelines from the crowd safety staff in the orange vests. —— Pay attention to your friends and people around you. —— If you need help, or see others who do, please address the crowd safety staff. —— Make sure to sleep, eat, and drink so that your body is supplied with rest and energy. If you feel unwell, or see someone else who seems to need help, address the festival staff.

Pit systems

The pit systems in front of Orange Stage and Arena are safety constructions that make the concert experience safe for those of you who would like to be right in front of the stage. Show up early at the concerts since space is limited in the pit systems and there are many who would like to get in there.

Do NOT

—— Crowd surf. Crowd surfing is very dangerous. Nobody likes your shoes in their face, and you might fall down or be trampled at worst. Crowd surfing is strictly forbidden at all stages and can cause immediate expulsion from the festival. —— Form human chains. You put others at risk by creating unrest in the crowd. —— Run or push to get in front. You create waves in the crowd and increase the risk of someone falling or getting crushed. —— Sit on the shoulders of somebody. You risk getting hurt, and it ruins the concert experience for others.

111 Staying in the pit systems during concerts can be a very intense and physical experience. We ask that you only stay in there if you feel completely safe at all times.

—— We will allow moshing, dancing etc. at these concerts. —— Do notice, however, that we do not allow crowd surfing.

AT THE STAGES

Protect your ears

You won’t get much out of Roskilde Festival if you can’t hear anything. If you experience a ringing or a buzzing in your ears you have to be careful – it’s a serious danger signal. Therefore – buy a set of earplugs. They can be found in all kiosks, drink stalls and merchandise stalls.

CLEAN VALUE YOUR WASTE – USE THE RECYCLING STATIONS

Every year, Roskilde Festival spends DKK 8 million on waste management. Help us, so we can spend that money on more music, charity and festivities instead.

It’s easy to clean up your camp at Roskilde Festival. There are waste bins at every single camping quadrant, and they are emptied on a daily basis by more than 200 volunteers. Spread out across the camping area you can find large recycling stations where you can sort your waste (general waste, metal, glass, batteries, air mattresses and cardboard) around the clock. Every day, parades will pass through the camping area and help you keep your area clean. Volunteers hand out empty waste bags for your camp and take away your full ones. we want your mattresses

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

—— In 2016 we removed more than 2,000 tons of waste from the festival area and sorted nearly 3 tons of air mattresses? —— More than 1.5 million bottles and cans pass through our refund system every year. —— We use 200,000 waste bags during a festival and we have about 1,200 bins. —— About 2 million pieces of biodegradable cutlery is used at Roskilde Festival as well as the same number of biodegradable cups.

Did you bring an inflatable mattress? If you’re done with it after the festival, please hand it in at one of our recycling stations. These mattresses are especially harmful to the environment because they contain PVC plastic, which shouldn’t end up with the combustible waste we collect from the waste bins and the camping area after the festival.

113

CLEAN AREAS

Want to live cleaner and greener? The clean areas are for those who prefer green grass to broken glass and who would rather dispose of garbage than sit in it. The clean areas in B and K are “regular” areas where you can party as loudly as you want – but here everyone helps keep the area clean and comfortable. Area J is both clean and silent (no loud music after 22:00, please).

When you visit area E and the southernmost part of area C this year, you will experience that it is not only our most festive area, but also one of the cleanest. This area is the home of Clean Out Loud. For the past six years, Clean Out Loud has been working to change the culture surrounding waste and garbage at Roskilde Festival through community spirit, festive garbage parades and creative events.

LARGE REFUND STALLS

This year we will be setting up three large stalls for those with big bags of empty cans and bottles for refund. In these stalls, we will even accept spirit and wine bottles with no deposit mark. This helps us keep the area clean. Find the large refund stalls in areas C, L and East City. Earn a little pocket money and help us clean up. See more on page 120.

Roskilde Festival spends DKK 8 million on waste management every year. We would much rather use that on building an extra stage with more acts, on supporting Red Cross ensure 80,000 safe childbirths in developing countries or by inviting all 130,000 festival-goers to the world’s largest dinner party! By bringing home useful camping gear – and sorting the rest at the recycling stations – you make Roskilde Festival more sustainable.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

114

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

A-Z

On the following pages we have gathered some useful information to help you get the most out of Roskilde Festival. Here you can find information on everything from first aid and public transport timetables to bottle refunds and parking. Some topics have their own dedicated pages elsewhere in the booklet. Remember: You can always get answers to any questions you might have at the information office.

ACCESS and WRISTBANDS

Your wristband gives you access to the festival areas so take good care of it. If your wristband is damaged or broken please contact one of the ticket offices at entrance East, West or the festival train station, where the situation will be assessed. If your wristband is stolen you must immediately report the theft to the police and then bring a copy of the police report to the nearest ticket office where the situation will be assessed. Stolen wristbands are usually not replaced by Roskilde Festival. Instead, you should contact your home or travel insurance provider for information about replacement of stolen wristbands.

festival site closed at night When the last concerts are over we close the festival site for the night. That’s at 4:00 at night. We open the gates again at 10:00 the following morning. We do this to clear space for deliveries of beer, water, food, etc. and to clean up the site.

AGE

When you turn 15 you are old enough to explore Roskilde Festival on your own, but please remember that Roskilde Festival is a big city where everybody is partying all the time, so it is a good idea for you and your friends to stick together. Please note that it is illegal in Denmark to serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 18.

AGORA

The agoras are the squares and meeting places of the different neighbourhoods in the camping area. All agoras have a central meeting point, marked with a big letter. If you need any help, please contact the service attendants on duty here. The meeting points also help you navigate the campsite.

Anyone caught without a valid wristband in the festival area will be liable to pay a fee of DKK 3,500. When the fee is paid you will be offered a ticket to the festival without any additional charge if Read they are not sold out.

fire In areas with many people camping close together open fire is dangerous, and therefore no open fire is allowed in the camping areas. This includes campfires, torches, candles, camping stoves and barbecues. All cooking must be done at the cooking islands by the agoras. Here you’ll also find a communal grill for barbecuing.

furniture Living room furniture and other similar flammable objects cannot be brought into the camping area for fire safety reasons. This does not apply to regular lightweight camping equipment, built-in objects in caravans or other equipment normally used when camping in tents. —— Regular lightweight camping furniture —— Folding and auto tables —— Small beach and folding chairs —— Sleeping mats and foam mattresses —— Pavilions —— Living room furniture, such as armchairs, sofas, coffee or dinner tables —— Building materials of any kind —— Generators and domestic appliances. However, there is an area with unique opportunities for bringing and building stuff, etc. Read more about Dream City on page 38.

There are no requirements regarding spacing of tents on the campsite, but the fire authorities require that there be at least 3 metres between caravans. Caravans will be guided into place by a service attendant. All fire access routes must be kept completely clear from items and equipment such as tents, guy lines and rubbish. The fire service vehicles must be able to move around unhindered.

There are cooking islands at the agoras where you can use camping stoves, disposable barbecues, the communal grill or the communal campfire spot. Service attendants will guide you in the use of the cooking islands.

CAMPING

You can camp on the entire camping area (East and West) and in other specific areas such as Get A Tent, Get A Place, caravan camping, MC camping and sleep-in buses (see map on page 128). Clean Out Loud (area E and southern part of C) and Settle’n’Share are special areas reserved for those who commit themselves extra to cleaning up etc. Before the festival it was possible to sign up for camping in these areas. All camping areas are divided into lettered and numbered spaces. All camping areas are open from Saturday 24 June at 16:00 until Sunday 2 July at 14:00. The service attendants can help and guide you in the placement of tents and how to dispose of waste.

(too) loud music?

CASHLESS

Many camps bring along big, home-built stereos. We ask everyone to show consideration for their neighbours. So if you’re in doubt whether you’re blasting your music too loud way into the night (or even later still), it’s always a good idea to ask your neighbours how it affects their festival experience. It’s all about mutual respect. That’s what makes Roskilde Festival a special place.

In 2017 we’re going cashless. This means that you have to use a card or MobilePay in our stalls. If you have a credit card, just keep using it. If you don’t have a credit card or simply prefer to arrive with cash (DKK, EUR, NOK, SEK, GBP, USD), you can transfer it to a cash card that you can use everywhere at the festival site. More info on p. 13.

silent & clean area

A free cloakroom service is available all over the campsite (see the map). Ordinary items such as coats, bags, tents and valuables can be checked in and stored here. The cloakrooms will not store cash and take no responsibility for any money stored in the checked-in items. The cloakrooms are open around the clock from Saturday 24 June at 16:00 until Sunday 2 July at 12:00. We also offer free charging of mobile phones and smaller gadgets (up to 15 W) as long as you bring your own charger. You can also exchange your Volt batteries here. See more under Mobile phones and charging, page 118.

CLOAKROOMS

Silent & Clean by Agora J in Camping East is for those of you who wish to stay in an area that is kept cleaner and where there are no noisy parties or constant loud music. The area will be under supervision and everybody is encouraged to help each other make sure the area is a nice place to be. Music is prohibited in the Silent & Clean area between 22:00 and 10:00. clean areas You can also camp in dedicated ‘clean’ areas. The clean areas are situated in B and K. In these areas there will be increased focus on waste disposal, and all participants are encouraged to help each other make the area a nicer and cleaner place to be.

COOLED LOCKERS

Want to cool down your food or beverages? We offer cool lockers at 12 different spots around the campsite (see map on p. 128). A cooled locker is both a locker for your valuables and a refrigerator. The lockers are placed in cooled containers where the temperature will stay between 4-6° Celsius – so no need to worry about drinking warm beers anymore. Buy access to a cool box from DKK 68 for one day to DKK 450 for the whole week.

Please note that the ‘clean’ areas are not ‘silent’ areas. Feel free to party with a clean conscience.
