Exclusively to Roskilde Festival, we also welcome the American street-art superstar Steve Powers. He will give the bandstand behind Orange Stage the same treatment as he has given several run down American neighbourhoods, by bringing life, light and colour to it. The “super prankster” Steve Todd has also travelled all the way from New York to Roskilde with his Improv Everywhere collective which will turn you and your festival upside down. We present food events that will send a rush of adrenaline through your appetite, and hopefully our Take A Stand! campaign will stay in your heart and mind long after you have left the festival. But don’t forget, a unique Roskilde festival is not created by art and music only. It needs you too. So take part, take in and help create Roskilde Festival. Build your own dream world in Dream City, create your own Roskilde app, and simply just take part in the community and solidarity all around you, which may just be the very best thing about the festival. Every year we leave Roskilde Festival with our bags filled with impressions that stay with us long after everyday life has resumed. These are memories that cannot simply be washed away with the dust from the well worn festival shoes. Instead, they continue to take us back to the grass fields south of Roskilde and keep us looking forward to the first week of July, again and again, year after year.

SAFETY AT ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

HAVE FUN AND STAY SAFE IN YOUR CAMP For nine days Roskilde Festival is one of Denmark’s largest towns where 80.000 happy festival guests sleep and eat together. This requires safety measures – and your common sense.

12

WATCH OUT FOR THIEVES! There are thieves at Roskilde Festival, especially in the camping area, so we encourage you to take extra care of your valuables and use the free cloakrooms at the agoras. Lock your tent with a padlock so your neighbours can keep an eye on it.

If you need psychological first-aid you can contact the emergency management office at telephone number 70 120 112 from Saturday 30 June at18:00 until Monday 9 July at 14:00. The investigative teams, the festival’s socalled social workers, can be found both at the festival and camping areas. All the social workers have a relevant pedagogical, social or health professional background. They are easily spotted in white vests with the words “social worker” on the back.

it is important that you do not light bonfires in your camp, neither during the festival nor when you are on your way home.

If you need help If you need help during the festival you can address the campsite service attendants in the orange vests. Furthermore, at all agoras service attendants are ready to help you, and also keep an eye on the camping area.

Stay clear of the gravel pit As you may have noticed the gravel pit at gate 10 on Camping East is almost filled again. However, the gravel pit is NOT ready for camping or pedestrians yet.

First-aid stations can be found at CITYcentre East and West, among other places. The posts are distinctly marked with a first-aid sign. Additionally a doctor is on duty at the first-aid station at CITYcentre East from Sunday 1 July until Sunday 8 July. The duty doctor’s opening hours are from 09:00 – 22:00.

How to avoid theft If you have an iPhone, don’t forget to download the Find My iPhone app. It will help the police track down your phone if stolen.

How to file a report You can report any stolen property at www.politi.dk. This also includes stolen wristbands.

13

SAFETY AT ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

No open fire The combination of nylon tents and open fire is extremely dangerous, which is why it is important that you do not light a bonfire in your camp – neither during the festival or when you’re leaving. The ban on open fire also includes torches, candles, hurricane lanterns, cooking devices and grills – including single-use grills. At every agora you’ll find a fire ring, a cooking island and a communal grill you can use if you want to grill sausages, make soup or simply heat a meal. Please remember that it is absolutely life threatening to light a gas burner in your tent, likewise it is not allowed to burn your tent, containers or other objects when you leave the festival.

HOW TO HAVE A FANTASTIC FESTIVAL – THE SAFE WAY Being at a concert should never be boring, but it should never be dangerous either. Therefore, there are a number of safety requirements and precautions at all the stages at Roskilde Festival that we ask you to follow. For the sake of you and your friends.

TAKE CARE OF THOSE AROUND YOU The safety at Roskilde Festival is continually evaluated to remove and reduce risks. We closely follow the national and international development in the safety field, but we still need you to help ensure that you and everybody around you get the best and most safe concert experience possible.

remember! Safety starts with you.

We therefore ask for your help with the following:

• Pay attention to – and follow – the safety information presented on big screens at the stages and the guidelines from the crowd safety staff in the orange vests. • Pay attention to your friends and people around you. • If you need help, or see others who do, then address the crowd safety staff. • Make sure to sleep, eat, and drink so that your body is supplied with rest and energy. If you feel unwell, or see someone else who seems to need help, address the festival staff.

Protect your ears You won’t get much out of Roskilde Festival if you can’t hear anything. If you experience a ringing or a buzzing in your ears, you have to be careful – it’s serious danger signals. Therefore – buy a set of earplugs. They can be found in all kiosks, drink stalls, and merchandise stalls and cost 10 kr.

Remember! Being in the pit systems during concerts can be a very intense and physical experience. We ask that you only stay in there if you feel completely safe at all times. HOW TO ENTER THE PIT At Orange Stage, there are two entrances to the four sections in front. If you want to go to sections B or D, you have to use the entrance east of the stage. The entrance to sections A and C is west of the stage.

if you feel insecure during a concert? Move back and to the side.

A

b

C

D

DO NOT • Crowd surf. Crowd surfing is very dangerous. Nobody likes your shoe in their face, and you might fall down or be trampled at worst. Crowd surfing is strictly forbidden at all stages and can cause immediate expulsion from the festival. • Form human chains. You put others in risk by creating unrest in the crowd.

• Run or push to get in front. You create waves in the audience and increase the risk of someone falling or getting crushed. • Sit on the shoulders of somebody. You risk getting hurt, and it ruins the concert experience for others.

15

SAFETY AT ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

Pit systems The pit systems in front of Orange stage and Arena are safety constructions that make the concert experience safe for those of you who would like to be right in front of the stage. Show up early at the concerts since there is limited amount of space in the pit systems and many who will like to get in there. The pit system entrances are located at both sides of the Orange stage and in the east side of Arena. The green and red lights at the entrance tell you if there is free space available or if it’s full. You can’t stay in the pit between concerts since they have to be cleared and cleaned.

Your cans can save lives Imagine if you could help prevent poverty and inequality in both Denmark and abroad just by emptying your cans? It may sound like a wet dream but it is the reality of Roskilde Festival.

Every time you empty a can or bottle at Roskilde Festival – and that has been known to happen a couple a times during a festival like this – you are faced with two options. You can step on it, ditch it in the grass and wait 789 years for nature to break it down. Or you can give it to our collectors, who will turn it in for emergency aid. Speaks for itself, doesn’t it?

refund collection

Whatever you are drinking from it has a deposit value, which the Youth Red Cross, Danish Refugee Council and Danish Church Aid REALLY want to get their hands on. Last year your empty bottles and cans became 1.3 million DKK, which gave a lot of people a better life. Let’s do even better this year! You can help in three ways: • Give your empty cans and bottles to the collectors in turquoise vests. They can be found at the camping site as well as the festival site during the festival. • Fill a turquoise bag with your cans, bottles and cups and give it to the collectors. • Dump your cans, bottles and cups at the turquoise domes.

The three youth organisations from Danish Red Cross, Danish Church Aid and Danish Refugee Council handle the collection this year. They each sponsor different projects. Danish Red Cross Youth collect money to improve conditions at asylum centres – especially for children. They wish to create new activities for lonely and mentally challenged children at the asylum centres as well as create network – and mentor projects for juvenile refugees, who arrive in the country without an adult companion. Church Aid Youth wants to spend the money changing the structures and barriers, which keep people in poverty, starvation and oppression. Governments often fail when trying to secure the poorest part of the population, which is why the Danish Church Aid helps weaker groups organise themselves and fight for the right to get food, healthcare, education, freedom of speech, fair legal systems and a secure and dignified existence. Danish Refugee Council is gathering money to improve the conditions for the thousands of young asylum seekers living in the streets of Athens. All proceeds go to sleeping bags and food, and the young refugees are also offered guidance and legal assistance

10 years worth of empty bottles have made the world a better place Mines in Congo, human trafficking in Cambodia and hunger in Malawi – thousands of empty bottles and cans have helped prevent these things through the last decade’s worth of collecting refund at Roskilde Festival.

Since then a total of 4000 collectors have raised 10 million DKK thereby making a huge difference for the poorest – all due to your empty beverage containers. 59892 square metres, the equivalent of 12 football fields, have been manually cleared of mines in The Congo and 89203 Congolese have been educated on the dangers of mines and unexploded

ammunition. In Cambodia a building has been erected containing an office, a library and educational facilities for threatened women and more than 2000 people have been educated in safe migration and human rights. 500 families from Malawi, the sixth-poorest nation in the world, have been educated in modern agricultural techniques – with special focus on involving women. Church Aid Youth has an information cafe inside the wall by Orange Stage allowing you to read and learn a lot more about the campaigns of the past decade. To mark the jubilee, Roskilde Festival and Church Aid Youth have built a copy of the separation barrier in Jerusalem next to the Orange Stage. See more on page 32.

Ten years ago Church Aid Youth began collecting money to help the poorest people in the world in a new way: By collecting empty bottles at Roskilde Festival.

TAKE OUT THE TRASH! Environment and waste 18

It gets much easier to get rid of your garbage at Roskilde Festival. 13 new garbage trucks, 500 extra garbage bins in the festival area and 300 new bins for the food stalls will make both Roskilde Festival and the environment cleaner.

When you dispose of your garbage the lights come on in Roskilde. 93 percent of all the garbage from the festival is used to generate heating and electricity in the rest of Roskilde town and that is why it is a good idea to find the nearest bin when disposing of your garbage. From early morning until late night 13 garbage trucks will be rolling around the camping area to Did you know…? • 2.008 tons of garbage was collected last year. • Each guest produces approximately 25 kg of garbage during a festival. That is more than four times as much as an average Dane does in a week. • The volunteer cleaners are not completely done cleaning up the camping area until September. • The weight of the garbage depends on the weather. In the record-breaking rainy year of 2007 the garbage weighed almost twice as much as the following year. • This year it is 18 years ago since Roskilde Festival formulated an environmental policy. Since then we have worked towards a greener profile every year.

collect your garbage and you can always get a new plastic bag from our volunteers at the agoras. On the festival area there are 2,500 bins, so you will never be far away from one, and the food stalls have received 300 new bins this year. Wake up to a clean camp Roskilde Festival is Denmark’s leading festival when it comes to collecting garbage and although it is not exactly spic and span on the camp site on Monday morning when all the last beers are being consumed, you will hopefully find it somewhat less messy than last year. Last year several camps cleaned between the tents and the last beer of the festival will probably taste better if you are not buried beneath greasy burger wrappings and heaps of empty cans. Help us – and the homeless It is not only the environment and the volunteers you help by cleaning up your camp. Over the last 3 years 3,200 homeless people in Denmark have kept warm in winter and 2,600 have slept more comfortably outside because festival guests have donated their sleeping bags and mats. You can hand in tents and other things you do not want to take home to one of the many open containers. Sleeping bags can be left in special cages near all the towers and exits. Remember – there are people out there who need them.

green footsteps 20

A festival for the environment It is not just the beers that are green at Roskilde Festival. Green Footsteps is our focus on the environment and sustainability. We call it Green Footsteps because we believe that many small steps lead to great changes – both for the festival and the rest of the World.

Every year, we build Europe’s biggest temporary city and after nine days, we tear it down again. This demands a lot from our environmental efforts, and obliges us to take care of our resources. Roskilde Festival wants to be a textbook example of the fact that being temporary doesn’t exclude sustainability and since the beginning of the 90’s, we have fought for the environment – both on the festival itself and in the world beyond. We have even been awarded for our work and we are definitely the strongest front runner among big festivals in Europe. In 2012, there are three focus areas on Roskilde Festival that we would like to involve you in: sustainable food, transport and waste.

Green City Green City (Agora H) is the green playground at Roskilde Festival. Here you will find a lot of space for offbeat ideas and great opportunities for becoming inspired and taking part in exciting and creative environmental activities. Students from Kolding School of Design will inspire the audience to construct and design cool fashion items from old tents. You can also try the odour free compost toilets where human waste is turned to soil or check out a garbage lounge where you can learn how to repair your broken chair or pavilion instead of throwing it away and much, much more!

21

In the Trade Zone you can experience “Window Farming, home compost systems and an interactive supermarket. You can also find out what an aquaponic system is. Near Roskilde Festival Train Station you can stamp the pedals of the energy bicycles that recharge your phone and discover how much CO2 you save by taking the train to and from the festival.

green camps are camps that are carefully chosen to show how to combine wonderful camp life with a green and sustainable lifestyle.

photo: kasper fladmose

By the Laguna (Agora H) you can recharge your phone on a solar cell tree, give new life to old tents and watch as students from DTU magically turn the lake nice and clean again.

Green Camps Around the camping area you can experience our Green Camps. These are camps that are carefully chosen to show the audience how to combine wonderful camp life with a green and sustainable lifestyle. Look for the Green Camp flags and make sure to experience their fantastic parties, activities, and clean and party friendly camps.

green footsteps

Green Spots Green Spots are three areas on the festival where we have set up some fun activities with sustainability as the main theme.

GET YOUR Roskilde Festival merchandise We have created a brand new collection of official Roskilde Festival merchandise, each piece telling the story about Roskilde Festival.

Numerous merchandise stalls enable you to buy a piece of Roskilde Festival and keep looking stylish both during the festival and when you go home. On the shelves you will find caps, T-shirts, party suits, Zippo lighters, scarves and if you forgot your underwear this is the place to buy an extra pair and be ’dressed for the occasion’ from the inside out.

MERCHANDISE 22

One-piece, fits all This season one-pieces have been difficult to avoid, which is why you can slip into your very own Roskilde Festival party suit. Perfect for the cool hours of the night.

Roskilde Festival merchandise, you help make the world a better place, as all proceeds are donated to charity. Find the merchandise stalls here The vendors are placed in CITYcentre East and West. At the festival site they are placed east of Orange Stage, in Sonic Zone near Pavilion and on the corner of 8th street and Fence Walk. The stalls on the festival site are open Thursday between 17-02, Friday and Saturday between 10-02 and Sunday between 10-22.

The audience-designed T-shirt of the year A female face with hands for hair. One of the thoughts behind this year’s audience-designed T-shirt is the notion of the road from thought to action often is shorter when people cooperate rather than work alone. More than 500 festival goers participated in the design competition to create this year’s T-shirt and the winner was 19-year old Sidsel from Sønderborg.

230 kr.

... and the official T-shirt of the year This is the T-shirt you simply can’t afford to leave without this year. The T-shirt is made from 100% organic Fairtradecertified cotton.

230 kr. You can also get merchandise at www.roskilde-festival.dk. Is your old T-shirt with The Cult getting a bit too worn? If you want to buy a T-shirt with your favourite band, it can be done at the stall closest to the stage the band is playing at, the day the band is playing.

Be true to what you really think and feel especially when it comes to drugs – it’s that easy and that difficult. 1972 cobain, custard and classic 80’s ROSKILDE RETRO

Did you know that in 1971 a ticket for Roskilde Festival was only 40 DKK, or that Bono once hovered above the audience in a crane? Have you recovered from the big swimming-pool-of-custard scandal of 72? Join us on a journey 20, 30 or 40 years back in time.

ROSKILDE RETRO in the back alley hall Take a journey through the wild history of Roskilde Festival. What did the official Roskilde Festival T-shirt look like in 1974? Why is Orange Stage really orange? Which year did Dr. Hook perform in the buff? We have designed a Roskilde Festival museum in the entire Back Alley Hall east of Orange stage. Here you can delve into the colourful history of the festival, listen to talks, meet some of the first festival volunteers from back in the day and of course look through 40 years worth of line ups.

24

Roskilde Retro invites you to take a walk down memory every day between 10.00 and 02.00.

Half naked hippies The second Roskilde Festival ever was actually called Fantasy and proudly hosted 25 bands playing on one stage during three days. 15.000 guests visited the festival that year, most of them probably being half naked hippies that danced around while the headliner The Kinks, one of the most requested bands at the time, were playing. … and custard The original plan was to build a swimming pool in the middle of the festival, which was then to be filled with custard or yoghurt. This, however, did never happen. The pool was filled with water instead – which didn’t work either, as the sides of the pool were torn and the water gushed out. Some of us here at Roskilde Festival are kind of hoping for a new attempt at the custard pool.

1982 Needle-throwing on the campsite This year we have Dream City – back in 1982 they had The Alternative City – a city where you could make your own pottery, throw ‘bombs’ at Reagan and last but not least throw hypodermic needles at a dart board in a classical 80s anti-drugs campaign.

Cobain, and the fight above all fights 1992 was a good year for Danish football and also a good year for grunge. At Roskilde Festival there were plenty of both in 1992. The headliner was Nirvana but Kurt had to share the attention with Flemming Poulsen, John Faxe and Peter Schmeichel. This prompted Kurt Cobain to say ”congratulations on the sport competition you just won” during Nirvana’s concert at Orange Stage. Somewhat annoyed according to legend. Cheers! If you wanted to know more about the programme back in 1992, you could call a 24-hour phone service for 9.95 DKK a minute. 757.000 beers were sold that year, which was the record hitherto.

ROSKILDE RETRO

Tam-tams well played In 1982 on Friday night at half past eight U2 took over Orange Stage overlooking the largest ever audience of the festival at the time. When ‘Get off my ground’ issued from the loudspeakers Bono jumped into a camera crane and hovered 15 meters above the crowd. In the Roskilde Festival newspaper it was noted in the review that this brand new Irish band was ‘sparkling and energetic’. The drummer was distinguished for ‘playing the tam-tams well’ and the guitar player The Edge was praised for his ‘impressive melodious guitar playing’.

TAKE A STAND! 26

IMAGINE being STOWED AWAY IN AN ASYLUM CENTRE

Every year Roskilde Festival takes a stand towards creating change in our world. This year we focus on the conditions of asylum seekers in the Nordic region.

Every year thousands of refugees arrive in Denmark. They have fled their homes for different reasons – some from war and persecution, others from hunger and poverty – but they all have one thing in common; they often have to spend several years in Danish asylum centres. It may take years before their cases have been heard and the law prevents asylum seekers from educating themselves or taking paid employment. In other words they are isolated from the society they wish to be a part of.

We find it inhuman to allow asylum seekers to live under these conditions. This is why we want to help create a better existence for young asylum seekers at Danish asylum centres – among other things by promoting inclusion rather than isolation. Who is responsible for inclusion? At the moment Danish politicians are working on allowing asylum seekers to live outside the centres and have the option of getting jobs. But we are not there yet and inclusion includes you. That’s why we ask you to step onto the front lines in the struggle to further inclusion – both here at Roskilde Festival and at home.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT ASYLUM SEEKERS • An asylum seeker is a foreigner, who is applying for the right to stay as a refugee in another country. • In 2004 Denmark received a mere 1,1 percent of all asylum seekers in the EU. • Denmark has 18 asylum centres. The Danish Red Cross runs 12 of these. • Approximately 3200 asylum seekers live in the centres run by The Danish Red Cross. • In November 2011 the average retention time for an asylum seeker was 600 days according to The Danish Immigration Service.

CHANGE THE WORLD THROUGH SPORTS AND MUSIC

Using sports and music as tools Roskilde Festival and Hummel wish to improve the lives of women at Danish asylum centres. For many asylum seekers staying at an asylum centre is a long and traumatising experience. In reality they are kept in an open prison with nothing to fill everyday life with. This creates a fierce sense of disempowerment in women, who have been used to running and creating their former lives. This is why Roskilde Festival and Hummel are cooperating with Sensational Football, and why we have arranged football tournaments at four Red Cross asylum centres so far. Later a music- and band bus, which will help them record their own anthems will visit these asylum centres. At Roskilde Festival you can experience a small part of the project in Game City where some of the women from the centres will form a super team in the annual Sensational Football Tournament. We call it ASYLUM FOOTBALL – and we want you and your team to join in!

help us help others Roskilde Festival is about music, art, artying and community. But the festival p is also about doing something to help the people who are unable to join us.

When you buy a ticket for Roskilde Festival or work as a volunteer at the festival you are making it possible for us to donate our profits to organisations and projects, which help make the world a better place.

Donations

To break the isolation asylum seekers end up in we among other things support different initiatives intended to further inclusion of refugees and asylum seekers as well as create value for the human beings stowed away in asylum centres.

Did you know? Part of the profits from Roskilde Festival is also given to poverty projects in the Nordic region – for instance Mothers Aid, Nordic newspapers for homeless people and Christmas aid for poor families. Throughout the years Roskilde Festival has distributed more than 175 million DKK to among others Medicines Sans Frontieres, Amnesty International, Save The Children and WWF – the World Wildlife Fund.

28

Do you want to do more? In 2011 Roskilde Festival was approved as a fundraising organisation, which means that we can gather donations to be given directly to charitable purposes. The goal is to get you and your friends to actively participate and get others to do the same – together we can create change. Take a stand by supporting our fundraising for the benefit of asylum seekers in the Nordic region. Stop by Agora M and Trade Zone to learn more...

29 See the complete list of donations and read more about standpunkt at roskilde-festival.dk

The profit from Roskilde Festival 2011 has been donated to these projects, among others.

ByBi hums away at Roskilde Festival ByBi is a project where 20 asylum seekers are trained as beekeepers and then given responsibility for 500,000 bees and the honey they produce. You can taste the honey at the Trade Zone. Sweet music at asylum centres In cooperation with the rehearsal communities R책stof Roskilde and ORA we will send a mobile rehearsal facility on a tour of the Danish asylum centres. The mobile rehearsal facility creates the opportunity for asylum seekers and local musicians to play together and thereby creating common stories across the barriers of language and culture.

Donations

Asylum seekers working as volunteers at the festival This year Roskilde Festival and Red Cross collaborate on a project giving asylum seekers ordinary volunteer work at the festival. Asylum seekers are allowed to do so and we believe such work creates value, dignity and self-esteem.

Poor City – for the fortunate few

Poor City is the place to observe Roskilde Festival’s Standpunkt live. Here you can gain insight into the life lived by young asylum seekers at Danish asylum centres – and find out how you can make a difference.

Experience these things in Poor City • Pop-up theatre with the organisation Asyl børnene Ud Nu (Asylum Kids Out Now), which will illustrate the difficult conditions for asylum seeking children at Danish asylum centres. • Asylum racing for you and your camp mates arranged by Save The Children Youth Organisation, giving you the opportunity to compete against each other while attempting to get permission to stay as an asylum seeker.

31 Read more about poor city and all the activities at roskilde-festival.dk

• Pillow talk. If you are curious you can lie down in a bed next to a complete stranger. Together you can answer and discuss questions asked by young asylum seekers thereby becoming wiser with regards to each other and to what asylum seekers think about.

Free breakfast – if you are lucky Did you remember to apply for Morning Asylum at the website before the festival? If you are among the lucky ones whose application is approved we will serve a delicious breakfast cooked by a chef and some asylum seekers. Morning Asylum is arranged in cooperation with Danish Red Cross. If you failed to apply for Morning Asylum, despair not! Asylum seekers live with uncertainties and rules can change fast. What you thought was a sure thing suddenly becomes the opposite. There may be room for more at the breakfast table if a group of asylum seekers are suddenly sent home you can’t always control such things yourself. That’s why you can always stop by at 9.00 in Poor City during warm-up to see if there are any seats left. In 2011 Poor City was about poverty, homelessness and despair. This year we focus on young asylumseekers in Denmark.

Evening Asylum in Poor City At Gjaestebud you can earn points through an asylum process and achieve a place in the Evening Asylum programme. This will get you an ethnic dinner created by one of the chefs from Gjaestebud. All you have to do is participate in various workshops including language lessons, which are held in Russian, African languages and Arabic during the day in Poor City.

• A barbershop run by Trampolinhuset where hairdresser-trained asylum seekers will provide fancy haircuts for you and your friends. There will be ample opportunity to have interesting conversations while getting your hair cut. While you are waiting visit the small gallery and look at art produced by asylum seekers. You can also have a massage or have your portrait painted.

Up against the wall Thousands of Palestinians are separated from their vital wells and crop fields. One of the reasons for this separation is a 700-kilometer long wall, which is being built, in some places even illegally, on Palestinian territory. Roskilde Festival and Nødhjælpens Ungdom (The Youth Emergency Aid), NU, wants to draw attention to this issue. That is why we have erected our own version of the wall next to Orange Stage. As a reminder to you of what is causing this miserable situation for the Palestinian people.

the wall

It is not possible to overlook or get around. The wall next to Orange Stage is 16 meters long, 8 meters high and 3 meters wide, and it’s there to remind you that every day, more than a thousand Palestinians are forced to live in the shadow of an even bigger and longer wall –the Israeli separation barrier, running straight through Jerusalem. When the wall is complete it will be more than 700 kilometers long. Wells with precious water are destroyed by the Israeli military, and the Palestinians are cut off from their crop fields and homes by military posts and the separation barrier. The wall sits next to Orange Stage because we want to bring the great need for humanitarian efforts and political change into focus. It is there because we want to ensure that the human rights of the Palestinians are respected. Because all humans have equal rights.

photo: uffe gjerding

32

Visit the wall by Orange Stage and write your name or a statement, or simply get the feeling of running your head against the wall – like a thousand Palestinians are doing. In the NU info café inside the Wall you can learn much more about the situation in Palestine and NU’s campaign ‘Palestine face to face’. You can also meet Israeli and Palestinian activists fighting against the occupation and for justice. The wall worsens the conditions of the Palestinian people, which causes: • Limited access to water. The Palestinians only have access to 50% of the water WHO recommends as a minimum. • 44% of the Palestinians in the occupied territories are now dependent on emergency aid from outside Palestine. • More than 40% of the West Bank has been made inaccessible to the Palestinians.

Electronic cornucopia with a Nordic touch Already during warm-up, the digital beats will blaze. Following the Pavilion Junior tradition, focus lies on the Nordic names of tomorrow.

apollo countdown 38

Apollo Countdown focuses on the underwood of Nordic electronic music. The mobile stage moves around the camping area during warm-up (1 - 4 July), with a new location every day and with a unique programme, ranging from Swedish hit makers to Icelandic noise terror and the deepest underground of Copenhagen. When the main programme starts, the stage will cease its orbit. From Thursday to Sunday Apollo will be a stationary stage south of Street City. Here, focus will be broadened into the entire international electronic scene. During the 8 days where Apollo flashes, there will be new and old, known and unknown, pop and avant-garde coexisting side by side, a diversity characteristic for Roskilde Festival.

Read about the artists on the following pages.

WHERE IS apollo countdown? • Sunday 1 July: At Entrance 6, south of Arena, Agora L • Monday 2 July: South of CITYcentre West, Agora E • Tuesday 3 July: South of CITYcentre East, Agora P • Wednesday 4 July – Sunday 8 July: South of Street City, Agora C

APOLLO COUNTDOWN BAND PResentations the breaking point as if the two lads were going for Skrillex’ throne. ELOQ/DK August Fenger is part of the infamous crew surrounding the Danish label Cheff Records. The Copenhagen producer and DJ has a passion for dusty synths, play station sounds, helium voices and cut-up drum samples. All in one brew, which gives the challenging fusion of edgy bass music and hip hop rhythms – also known as wonky – a Copenhagen twist. adrian lux · photo: mikael dahl

ADRIAN LUX/S Adrian Lux immodestly claims that he cannot write anything but hits. This is more than boasting from a Swedish Adonis. ”Can’t Sleep”, ”Strawberry” and ”Teenage Crime” have already proven their worth on both the charts and the dance floors. With his carefree blend of house and pop, the young DJ, producer and musician with the high voice has already won over Tiësto, Justice and the Swedish House Mafia. BEASTIE RESPOND/DK The Copenhagen-based nightclub Dunkel houses some of the city’s most interesting electronic sounds. People, who have visited the club, might have listened to producer Tobias Pedersen who is a house DJ and booking agent for the dark rooms. The Dane’s rhythms are a mix of electro, techno, dubstep and especially drum’n’bass. COPENHEAVY/DK Oscar Rumle and Michael Korch cross beats, bass and bangers under the name Copenheavy. They are a duo from Copenhagen who is touring all over Denmark and who has achieved a big fan base in short time. With a starting point in hard electro and dubstep, they make the party boil over. Copenheavy delivers heavy bass for the masses, and their hot tunes are strained to

F.O.O.L. /S Fuck Our Ordinary Lives – and start partying! F.O.O.L. is one of the hottest names in dirty electronic music right now. Rasmus Hermansen and Oliver Nilsson already have thousands of global hungering fans constantly waiting for the next remix, just as the duo – Sweden’s equivalent to Justice? – has toured the globe with their explosive shows. THE FREDERIK/DK Frederik Olufsen is the protégé of Canadian house star deadmau5. Judging from the first tracks – a bass-heavy mix of electro, dubstep and 8-bit – The Frederik sounds ready to give his mouse-masked label boss a race down to the wire. A new young hope enters the international electronic club scene. FRITJOF & PIKANEN/S The musical chemistry was apparently present from the beginning with Fritjof & Pikanen. They met to create a remix together and decided to become a duo shortly after. Fritjof’s Swedish-language lyrics revolve around their everyday life, Stockholm and love. With Pikanen’s melodic and effective dubstep arrangements, the music is well suited for both partying and ordinary days.

sandra kolstad

SANDRA KOLSTAD/N Norway has a new electro pop princess. Her name is Sandra Kolstad and she has a firm grip on producing frosty, electronic pop. Norwegian critics have already fallen in love with Kolstad’s futuristic robot disco, which may very well soon catapult the Norwegian towards international fame. KÚRA/ISL/DK Copenhagen’s electronic scene and Iceland’s lush nature melt together like neon-coloured lava when Kúra is playing. Child of nature Fanney Ósk Thórisdóttirs’s voice rests on the chilled, rumbling electronic production, which is the epitome of big city melancholy from the nightclubs’ lower floors. Kúra’s sound is a tempting, Nordic darkness.

khalazer are a couple of Roskilde regulars. Khal Allan visited Pavilion Junior in 2010 and Dr. Lazerlyde plays again this year with analogik.

KESI/DK With grainy YouTube videos and lots of ghetto attitude, Kesi and his crew have been part of setting the agenda for Danish hip hop. On their own, these young troublemakers have created some of the most raw and lively rap heard in the kingdom. The language is Danish through and through. Musically, they are especially inspired by English grime hip hop’s scratchy sound. With Benny Jamz’ pounding productions as a toxic background, Kesi is a must if you want get an impression of Danish hip hop anno 2012.

KHALAZER/DK In a bright green collision, Dr. Lazerlyde from Danish band Analogik puts together sound bits, string riffs and samples, which sounds as if they are taken from Bollywood, Nintendo, London’s deepest club basements and old radio programmes. On top of this mix, Khal Allan delivers thoughtful, baroque rap lyrics, which have given him a unique status in the Danish hip hop underground.

MASH UP INTERNATIONAL/S Robert Dinero, Uffie Ice and Money Mats Norman constitute Mash Up International, one of the hottest names on the Scandinavian club scene right now. Like Roskilde Festival, they mix music from near and far, and even farther. The DJ and producer group mentions kuduro, baile funk, cumbia, dancehall and kwaito as some of the points of references.

G-M · apollo countdown BAND presentations

ghostigital

GHOSTIGITAL/ISL After a long musical break Einar Örn now collaborates with sound artist Curver under the moniker Ghostigital. Ghostigital is a bloody nose to anyone who imagines Iceland as the home of knit sweaters and lovely, ethereal music. A crazy ride over volcanic plains with a sound of industrial, abstract hip hop and disorienting samples.

SLENG/DK The Copenhagen hood Nørrebro is no longer the only destination for fans of home grown grime hip hop. The Copenhagen suburb Vangede is also worth namedropping among fans of Danishlanguage, sharp-tongued rap. Sleng consists of two high school lads, Aesthetic & Larry, full of attitude. They have embraced the originally British hip hop variety and have already become major players on the scene.

Henjum, claims that he and the people from the Dødpop label have created skweee 2.0 – a special variant of the sound from Norway. JULIUS SYLVEST/DK With a preference for kuduro, cumbia and other global beats, Julius Sylvest – who is also a part of the DJ crew Lortehænderne – is obviously a DJ after Roskilde Festival’s multi-coloured music heart. And we are not alone in our opinion. Reportedly, Diplo has also given this Dane a nod of acknowledgement. SOFFIE VIEMOSE/DK With academy studies in electronic music as the ballast, Soffie Viemose is about to unfold her name as one of Denmark’s most promising acts in semiexperimental electronica. The young producer and singer’s delicate electronic arrangements contain a creeping sadness. At the same time, the many details show a playful mind at work. VAAGSBYGD HANDY/N Coming from down south – southern Kristiansand, Norway, to be more specific – it can be hard to make yourself heard when producing Norwegianlanguage, British-inspired grime hip hop. However, Vaagsbygd Handy has managed to do just so where Norwegian, British and Jamaican currents meet. With an East London edge and a motley array of words, Vaagsbygd Handy shows the way for Norwegian hip hop from the small provinces.

sprutbass

SPRUTBASS/ n Scandinavia has recently developed its own electronic underground dance genre. It is called skweee and is an odd distortion of British bass music and electro funk, typically performed on outdated computer equipment. Mr. Sprutbass, Eivind

WAR FOR YOUTH/DK/S The Copenhagen punk scene experiences quite a boost these days with Iceage as the internationally noted figurehead. The scene is still small. Everyone knows each other. War For Youth is a constellation put together for Roskilde Festival, a cross between War and even-minded Lust For Youth. The two bands have in common industrial icy synths, effects-drowned vocals and an indefinable sense of something new and dangerous.

RESIDENT DJ’s Pelle Peter and Emil Lange play DJ sessions between the scheduled artists.

NORTHERN STRUCTURES/DK Lasse Buhl and Troels B-Knudsen are proud children of the environment surrounding the Copenhagen venue Culture Box – a Danish, if not Nordic, epicentre of techno and electronic music. With an original starting point on the drum’n’bass scene, the lads have delved into more straightforward techno. The duo’s Nordic sound has been so convincing that the, in techno circles, semi-legendary label Sonic Groove has invited them into the fold.

pavilion junior BAND PResentations THE BEARDY DURFS/DK The do-it-yourself philosophy, DIY, thrives well in an age when anyone can buy some sparse equipment and release their material online. The Beardy Durfs are offshoots of this school. The two lads from Copenhagen make broken-up noise rock that mixes white noise with sonic pleasure.

DANGERS OF THE SEA/DK Members from several well-known Danish bands have found common ground in a shared musical vision. They ensure a high level of country-scented, 70s-nostalgic folk rock songs. In singer Andreas Bay Estrup’s musical universe it is always dusk and the leaves keep on falling. Dangers of the Sea are Nordic Americana on a par with the great talents on the other side of the Atlantic.

bäddat för trubbel

BÄDDAT FÖR TRUBBEL/S Det här är inte New York is the title of Bäddat För Trubbel’s debut album. This is the sound of Malmö’s underground punk scene in all its charismatic, proletarian and hungover splendour. The songs are obviously sung in Swedish, but even in the US they have discovered that the lads’ uncomplicated punk can make the language barriers crumble like Wasa crispbread. CEREKLOTH/DK The debut album is still on its way, but already on the EP Halo Of Syringes you are convinced about the potential in these students of old-school death metal. They are called Cerekloth. Lead singer JBP has a growl so animalistic and full of rottenness that you almost see the maggots come creeping out of his mouth. The rest of the band plays just as crushingly tight. Get in shape early for the metalfest with Cerekloth.

Deathcrush · photo: ingrid pop

DEATHCRUSH/n The band name originates from an EP by Mayhem. Still Norwegian black metal is just one of many ingredients in Deathcrush. The trio’s unique sound is noise rock spiced up with a bit of dark evil from up North; New Yorker-cool guitar abuse by a band that rips, screeches and tears, while at the same time is unafraid of being catchy. DIG & MIG/DK Danish band Dig & Mig’s innocent pop punk has taken shape in the Danish punk underground – but the wide audience has quickly caught on. Sune Wagner from The Raveonettes has produced the duo, and you can easily hear why. Listening to Dig & Mig, they sound like a meeting between the Danish 80s band Rocazino and Ramones.

the echo vamper · photo: lasse dearman

THE ECHO VAMPER/DK Imagine Blondie’s Debbie Harry bitten by a bat filled with a vampire virus. That is just about the sound of Iza Mortag Freund who – with controlled screaming vocals – stands on the shoulders of other queens of darkness such as Lydia Lunch and Siouxsie Sioux. James Brook provides stripped down rock’n’roll, drum machine and 80s synths. FRENCH FILMS/FIN Despite the name, Finnish band French Films does not have a special interest in Truffaut or Godard. England – more specifically Manchester – appears to be checked off in their inner music atlas. In spite of their winter-haunted home, they are not particularly melancholic. Their alternative rock has a youthful appetite for life and a feeling of beach and summer.

ICONA POP/S You can almost hear it in the name. Icona Pop aims to create chic, sophisticated electro pop songs. The photogenic duo with the honey-like voices attracted all kinds of buzz in the blogosphere with the EP Nights Like This, which is rich on crystalline pop, bubbling synths and catchy choruses. INDIANS/DK In one of few, scarce messages to the outside world, Indians describe the music as magical, dreamy and poetic. Indians’ songs overflow with psychedelic beauty in widescreen. The first smoke signals suggest a band with a laid-back ease of writing alternative pop hymns. DAWDA JOBARTEH/ GAM/DK With the praised debut album Northern Light Gambian Night, Dawda Jobarteh combines virtuoso kora harp playing with a sensibility that is both Nordic and jazzy – most likely a product of many years as a resident in Copenhagen where he has played with many of the very best musicians from the Nordic jazz scene.

GIRLSEEKER/DK With synths, guitar and effects-drenched, deep vocals, Girlseeker have in their own minimal way made their mark as a new exciting band from the Copenhagen punk underground. With a nofrills style, Girlseeker inhabits a sound space that is equal parts arrogant, arty post-punk and 80skitschy pop taste.

KLUMBEN & RASKE PENGE/DK Life in Copenhagen bars and takeaway joints now has a perfect soundtrack with Klumben & Raske Penge, who rap about life in their hometown in a mixture of Jamaican, sun-drenched grooves and Danish social realism. Danish dancehall rarely sounds better than this.

GOVERNOR OF ALASKA/DK With guitar and drums only, Governor of Alaska create a tight spectacle filled with quirky rhythms, metallic crust and rumbling, instrumental thunderclaps. ‘Experimental Afropunk’ is how the duo defines the music. The violent beats hit hard when they release the brake and ride towards the stratosphere.

LINKOBAN/DK The crown princess on the Danish grime scene is called Linkoban. This sharp, new acquaintance ensures that Lucy Love is not the only Danish female representative of the rap genre originating from the UK. A new exciting acquaintance for anyone with a penchant for dirty urban pop.

47 E-L · pavilion junior BAND presentations

HELSINKI POETRY/DK The capital of Finland is not the only place where Helsinki Poetry has its starting point. Ebbe Frej and Rune Vigil use different cities around the world as the centre of their songs. The mood and choice of colour in the noise-poppy songs vary depending on whether we are in fairytale-like “Marrakech” or rainy “Manchester”.

a strong, personal voice and a firm grip around her acoustic guitar, the young singer has already captured her first hearts. Many more await ahead. Mathilde Savery sounds confident and determined to bring her folk songs out to a big audience. SHINY DARKLY/DK Dark leather jacket colours are dominant when Shiny Darkly turns on the amplifiers. With a welldeveloped understanding of classic, dirty garage rock riffs, these three young lads have already – on a basis of few exquisite songs – convinced the Danish music press, the picky underground and the equally choosy label Crunchy Frog about their potential.

Some of the Danishlanguage rock bands at Pavilion Junior have a penchant for odd numbers – at least ulige numre and rum 37.

REDWOOD HILL/DK Nordic, heavy and depressive are in some contexts almost synonymous. This is definitely the case with a new razor-sharp five-piece from Copenhagen who thunders with post-metal of the both minor chordmelodious and brutal kind. Redwood Hill is a promising acquaintance for fans of intelligent metal and Scandinavian dark-mindedness.

RUM 37/DK Danish-language rock thrives these days. Take Rum 37, for instance, who play wistful guitar rock with echoes of other Scandinavian-tongued bands such as Kent and Love Shop. Kristian Helmuth sings with intensity about his Copenhagen, the fluidity of life and the sun that burns a hole in the dark clouds.

SLOWOLF/DK Andreas Asingh knows how to produce electronic falsetto pop songs that could get both disco godfather Giorgio Moroder and pet shop boy Neil Tennant to shout with joy. Don’t think that Slowolf is only for people who love crisp synths and light vocals. The debut album contains a visit from hip hop king Raekwon from Wu-Tang Clan. TEAM ME/n As the band name suggests, Team Me was just supposed to be Marius Hagen’s solo/side project. Today the six-piece Team Me is one of Arcade Fire’s most obvious rivals. Team Me plays grandiose indie pop, and the catchy, joyful and majestic songs have significant international potential.

ULIGE NUMRE/DK Ulige Numre has achieved an immediate recognition that many similar bands can only dream of from the audience. Their debut single “København” has been the soundtrack of the dark months to many Scandinavians. The young lads are in their early 20s, but they play lyrical, lovesick Danish-language rock with a confidence and stage presence as if they were an older and more experienced band.

120 DAYS/N You can hear the freezing Norwegian cold in a band like 120 Days from Kristiansund. The Norwegians play cold, dark electronic rock that sounds like Kraftwerk’s hometown Düsseldorf in the 70s and Manchester in the 90s. 120 Days II (the follow-up to the debut album from 2006) bodes well for a rock rave full of laser lights, Norwegian subzero degrees and house hypnosis.

THE ABYSSINIANS/ JAM The original nobility of reggae invites you to their court at Roskilde Festival. The Abyssinians’ song ”Satta Massagana” from 1969 is regarded by many as the defining hymn of Rastafarian culture. The core members of the band are grey-haired veterans today. But The Abyssinians continue to spread the message of revolution and their sunsoaked musical genre, which during their career has become cherished far beyond the beaches of Jamaica. ADDISON GROOVE/ UK The influential Brit Antony Williams already made a name for himself on the dubstep scene when he collected scalps under the moniker Headhunter. But it’s as Addison Groove that he has made his biggest impact on the bass music scene. Addison Groove combines

naughty Chicago-esque clubbing sounds like juke or ghetto house with British bass and dubstep using cool synth themes, trippy 808 drum machines and looped vocal samples. ADRIAN LUX/s See Apollo Countdown presentations on p. 40-43. AFRICA HITECH/UK Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek are two experienced and respected lads in progressive electronic music. Africa Hitech is a psychedelic hotchpotch of robotic rhythms, bass, ghost vocals and vitamin D rich equator sun. A kind of digital multiple wedding between dubstep, ghetto house and drowsy techno in the middle of the African savannah. ALABAMA SHAKES/US Few places have defined the sound of the American South as much as the state of Alabama, and few bands manage to combine good oldfashioned greasy soul with genuine rhythm and blues as much as Alabama Shakes. With the debut album Boys & Girls on the move from hype to hit lists, the quartet prove that their musical intensity and sense of tradition have far from suffered from the fact that they are one of the hottest bands at the moment.

THE ALAEV FAMILY/ ISR/TJ With foothold in the percussive traditions of Central Asia, several generations of The Alaev Family perform together. The age span is, according to themselves, 15 to 79. In 1991 the entire Alaev family emigrated from Tajikistan to Israel. You will notice this in the multi-ethnical music, which employs accordions, angry violins and Turkishsounding scales on the clarinet. The music grooves with more exhilaration than a wedding where half of Tel Aviv is invited.

AMADOU & MARIAM/ MALI In the light of their numerous appearances at Roskilde Festival, we are proud to call Amadou & Mariam – Africa’s musical First Couple – true regulars. Africa, or Mali to be precise, has never sounded as accessible as it does with these blind veterans. The pair unites funk, rock, tribal song and pop in a musical mixture, which is both melodious by Western standards and full of African flavour.

APPARATJIK/int With a coupling of pop music, quantum theory and rocket science, Apparatjik has ventured into exploring the remote regions of the Galaxy. A group containing super producer Martin Terefe and members of Mew, Coldplay and a-ha ensures that the music holds a dream-like, floating sensation as well as highly catchy synth melodies. At the same time the super-group’s show is a unique experiment with the concept of concert at Roskilde Festival – equal parts electronic pop party and art installation. ARAABMUZIK/ US A session with AraabMuzik is a superior display of virtuoso skills, darkening the future of the guitar solo. With his beat-up MPC – an advanced drum and sample machine – as a starting point, Abraham Orellana creates harsh, cut-up, MC-free hip hop that mutates between trance, mash-up, dubstep and countless other electronic genres.

BALOJI/ CD Originally, Baloji was a member of the popular hip hop collective Starflam. But after having decided to put life as a musician behind him, Baloji’s Congolese background came knocking on his door. The solo debut album Hotel Impala became a success and placed Baloji in the field of central European African-inspired hip hop. BARONESS/US The originally black-coloured metal genre has long since exploded in fireworks of colours and genre shifts. With Red Album and Blue Record, Baroness have made a name for themselves as one of the most progressive front-runners of Southern metal. CROWBAR/US Kirk Windstein will – despite gigs in Down – always remain synonymous with Crowbar who, like few other bands, have incarnated the murky sludge metal genre with their tuned-down riffs, lazy grooves and roaring vocals. Sonic Excess In Its Purest Form is the title of one of the band’s most famous albums. The title gives a good impression of the bone-crushing embrace, which is the epitome of Crowbar.

MIKAL CRONIN/US Fans of American garage rock will recognise Cronin’s name from The Moonhearts and his collaboration with Ty Segall where the young American has had a great brooding environment for his live-based, raw and melodic songs. With his debut album Cronin has started a career based on occasionally noisy music with the catchy song as objective, means and purpose.

THE CURE/ UK Few other bands have incarnated the black-clad music scene of the 80s with as wide appeal as The Cure. Albums such as Pornography and Dis integration have secured Robert Smith a legendary status among rock critics. At the same time, The Cure is popular among a wide audience because of hits such as “Close To Me” and “Friday I’m In Love”. THE CULT/UK With a foothold in goth rock and heavy metal and a deep fascination by mysticism and the occult, The Cult have been practicing stadium rock for more than 25 years. This year will see the release of Choice of Weapon, the first album from The Cult in five years. Her songs are sparsely arranged – often with the acoustic guitar as the only accompaniment. Tonra’s delicate voice is so rich in nuances, colours and blues that a big backing orchestra would seem decidedly misplaced in Daughter’s minimal but effective folk.

DEVILDRIVER/ US Dez Fafara and his companions are deservedly praised for their extensive service at metal venues all over the world. The American favourites have eaten their way up the food chain as a heavily touring metal band with a penchant for eruptive live concerts, hard-tuned drums and general aggression. Devildriver keeps the demons at bay with pumped-up thrash, hardcore and death metal.

DEAD SKELETONS/ isl “He who fears death cannot enjoy life,” is the basic philosophy of psychedelic, death-embracing trance rock band Dead Skeletons. GURRUMUL/AUS Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu has already been hailed as one of Australia’s most incredible voices. With an acoustic guitar and his tenor as primary travel companions, the blind aboriginal heads out on musical wanderings through his country’s, his clan’s and his own history. Brutally beautiful in their melodic and classic simplicity, they are gorgeous nature songs.

JULIA HOLTER/ US Julia Holter is an acquaintance of the more sophisticated kind, with her inspiration from and references to composition music, poetry, art films and theatre. However, there is still an element of accessible pop music in the many-sided instrumentation of the American’s compositions. The playfulness, the details and the transitions between anything from synthesizers to cembalo, from beauty to eeriness, is invested in a melodious material that can be related to in countless ways.

HOSPITALITY/US “I don’t know how to write conventional songs,” says Hospitality’s lead singer and guitarist Amber Papini in an interview. Good, you’re tempted to say. The Brooklyn trio’s treatment of alternative guitar pop structures is playful and restless without losing any sunshine-blurry, sweet and – you guessed it – hospitable elements. SIVERT HØYEM/N Madrugada was one of Norway’s biggest rock bands. Back in the band’s heyday, you really paid attention to vocalist Sivert Høyem’s baritone. He still produces grandiose Scandinavian rock full of inner drama. On the Norwegian’s fourth album, Long Slow Distance, he has found inspiration in surprising places and the synthesizer often knocks on the door in Høyem’s stormy songs in minor.

I GOT YOU ON TAPE/ DK Church of the Real, is the title of I Got You On Tape’s latest album. Grandiose and self-assured – just like the music. With a sporadic disco inspiration, church organ and catchy choruses, the well playing fourpiece ensures an even more grandiose atmosphere than ever before. Jacob Bellens’ powerful voice is just one of many aces up their sleeve. Relaxed and unforced they deliver poppy rock songs that seize the key to the audience’s heart.

JONATHAN JOHANSSON/ S Say hello to Sweden’s new champion in romantic and soulful pop. With his Swedish lyrics and tasteful 80s-leaning arrangements, Johansson has also conquered pop hearts all the way across the Atlantic. He stylishly and coolly distils romance and soul into black shiny pop songs. Jonathan Johansson continues the Swedish tradition of writing superior, slightly melancholic pop songs. JUPITER & OKWESS INTERNATIONAL/CD For practically a lifetime, Jupiter Bokondji has worked hard to show how the ethnic diversity in DR Congo can result in something other than civil war. Okwess International is a band of talented young people from the provinces in the war-ravaged country. Together, they play adventurous sunshine pop with the healing zebola dance as a starting point. PAUL KALKBRENNER/DE Over the past 15 years, he has steadily been promoted to the genre’s premier league. Today, Paul Kalkbrenner’s name is written in big letters at electronic parties throughout Europe. Since the job of soundtrack composer and leading actor in the cult film Berlin Calling, Paul Kalkbrenner has become some kind of figurehead for the Berlin techno scene. The 2011 album Icke Wieder cements the German’s talent for creating minimal techno.

ALISON KRAUSS & UNION STATION feat. JERRY DOUGLAS/US Having spent over 25 years in the business and won just as many Grammys, bluegrass queen Alison Krauss is a relaxed, unpretentious legend, only in her early 40s. Alison Krauss’ lavish voice makes every song from her lips a true delight. Even if the subjects are typically about heartache and endless sorrow, there is always a twinkle in her eye between the banjo and fiddle sounds and with the Dobro master Jerry Douglas at her side, Krauss’ songs are in good hands.

KELLERMENSCH/ DK ”Although you belong in the dark below, you can easily rise and shine quickly,” we wrote in 2010 when Kellermensch had transformed from Pavilion Junior pupa in 2009 to a pitch-black butterfly. These words also hold true in 2012 when the band is winning new fans over – internationally as well – with their hard-hitting rock filled with crushing guitars, clenched fists and melodic tastiness. We welcome back Kellermensch who now inhabit the top floor of Danish rock.

KRIGET/S Drum, bass and saxophone distorted beyond recognition is not the most obvious setup for dystopian rock’n’roll. Nevertheless, Kriget creates a very distinct expression due to this rather unusual instrumental trio. Kriget can deliver a thunderclap that will shake your head. Get ready for some instrumental future music that is more raw and more to the bone than an x-ray.

LONE/uk On a dense stream of albums, Matt “Lone” Cutler has developed his own imaginative mix of rave, hip hop, funk, techno and starglittering synthesizers. The clubby party sensation has recently been upgraded. At the same time, the Brit’s experimental approach toys with the typical dance floor beat and creates a memorable experience. Even for those who prefer not to shake a leg.

On their website the jazz punks in kriget are described as the sound of animals having sex – in a good way.

LARSEN & FURIOUS JANE/ DK Torsten Larsen and his squires ought to be mentioned when looking up the term ‘critic’s favourite’ in a Danish dictionary. With a solid grasp on song writing, Larsen & Furious Jane have created a handful of albums that uses well-written, absolutely non-Danish sounding indie rock to explore the rather disgruntled mood as it sounds coming from a group of Danes. linkoban/dk See Pavilion Junior presentations on p. 46-49. LITURGY/ US In the more conservative (black) metal circles, Brooklyn’s Liturgy has created controversies by means of their everyday appearances and studenty mindset. However, in spite of their appearances, the music is still none the less scathing and chaotic. The founder’s abuse of both guitar and vocal cords is matched by a band that unites the genre’s primal scream with an instrumental equilibrism you mostly encounter in jazz, mathrock and modern music compositions.

MACHINE HEAD/ US ”Let freedom ring with the shotgun blast!” Many metal fans probably still get goose bumps when they hear this call from Machine Head’s debut album Burn My Eyes. Machine Head have crushed their way through the 90s and 00s with a metal sound that is both varied and brutal. The Californian heroes have become exponents of progressive, melodic thrash metal that will never rest until all fists are in the air. MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS/US In Seattle, his home town, he is close to owning the keys to the city, and the rest of America is also about to catch up on the white rapper’s genuine hip hop. The Seattle hero sends an erect middle finger to the conservative souls of the genre. With producer and beat smith Ryan Lewis aboard, Macklemore treats us with different emotional hip hop that can hijack many hearts – even outside of hip hop circles.

M83/FR Finally, we have M83 back to bathe our ears in grandiose sci-fi sounds. Anthony Gonzalez’ latest magnum opus – the double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming – makes M83’s previous releases sound rustic and simple. 80s-happy synths and bombastic noise rock fuse together in an upward maelstrom – like keyboard whiz Jean-Michel Jarre would have sounded if he was backed by My Bloody Valentine.

The New Yorker-cool, and slightly exhausted, male voice of Richard Myklebust is challenged by the angel-like, ethereal female voice of Linn Frøkedal. MEW/DK Few Danish bands have had as great success home and abroad as Mew. The band has developed a unique sound where Jonas Bjerre’s choirboy vocals are the human anchor point in a tornado of sophisticated, dreamy, often hardhitting rock with wonderful melodies. MODESELEKTOR/ DE The live performance is the most holy call for Modeselektor. After having been brought up in the restriction-rich GDR, the partnership Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary constantly tear down mental Berlin walls. Their bubbly musical alchemy consists of equal amounts of techno, hip hop, IDM, UK bass, crunk and countless other genres. The borderline schizophrenic style changes and the totally crazy party are drawn with spray paint across the modus operandi of Modeselektor. JANELLE MONÁE/ US Janelle Monáe’s Roskilde debut in a packed Cosmopol tent last year was a dizzying triumph, which demonstrated how Roskilde history is written year after year. Janelle Monáe combines futuristic soul, R&B, hip hop and rock in a show, which is a treat for both androids, dancing girls and musicsnobbish lads. In 2012 it will be even bigger and with a new batch of songs loaded in the spaceship.

OWINY SIGOMA BAND/UK/KEN The traditional songs of Kenya are given a gleam of today’s London with Owiny Sigoma Band. In 2009, a group of London-based lads went to Nairobi to jam with the local musicians, originating in the traditions of the Luo people. The focal point of the music is a special Kenyan harp called the nyatiti. The English musicians spar attentively, humbly and instinctively with the Africans’ hypnotic music. PENGUIN PRISON/ US Chris Glover is not likely to be grateful for the financial crisis (who is, anyway?) but his single “Don’t Fuck With My Money” hardly could have come out at a better time. Penguin Prison, Glover’s mysterious alias, didn’t just hit the spirit of the times spot on with this single. The New Yorker specialises in bubbly, positive, intelligent, hipster-approved party music with equal tastes of Hot Chip, Daft Punk and Justin Timberlake. PERFUME GENIUS/ US A melancholic voice and a battered piano are the starting point. Perfume Genius digs the simple set-up, and it’s hard not to get sucked into Mike Hadreas’ universe of simple minor chords and shattered destinies. The bright angelic voice from Seattle writes piano ballads so beautiful and winged that you almost see the ill-fated characters from the songs walk past you. The lyrics often touch upon homosexual love, addiction and suicide. CELSO PIÑA/ “El Rebelde del Acordeón”, “El Rey de la Cumbia Colombiana”. RED FANG/ US The members of Oregon’s perhaps most beerthirsty hard rock band all have a past in a variety of lesser-known outfits. With Red Fang they believe they have found the ultimate goal of their many years in the holy service of the riff. The 2011 album Murder The Mountains gives good insight into what awaits Roskilde Festival’s hordes of hopshungry rock fans this summer: a testosterone-driven update of Black Sabbath, Melvins and Kyuss.

LEE RANALDO/US Lee Ranaldo has been a core member of genredefining noise rock band Sonic Youth for 30 years. The band is now on hiatus, and it has given Ranaldo time to complete his solo project, which was started back in 2010. As a guitarist Ranaldo has been at the intersection between experimental minimalism and alternative rock. He recently released his first songoriented solo album Between The Times And The Tides.

ROVER/FR Timothée Régnier’s passport may be French but his history indicates why his stage name “Rover” isn’t a coincidence. Rover has already mesmerised fans of lyrical pop in France with his fantastic voice, which has been compared to Anthony Hegarty’s.

THE ROOTS/US Many people call The Roots the best live band of hip hop for their swing and rock band feeling. Deservedly so. The hard-working hip hop collective from Philadelphia make their instruments glow and sound just as organic and authentic as a crackling vinyl record. ?uestlove, Black Thought and co. lead the way when it comes to hip hop packed with hot neo-soul, social indignation, humour, funk and jazz. CHRISTINA ROSENVINGE feat. CHRIS BROKAW & REFREE/E/US In the course of three decades as a performing artist, Christina Rosenvinge has become an experience artist who has progressed from teenage pop idol to a respected alternative artist in Spain. Her characteristic vocals are reminiscent of both Stina Nordenstam and Cat Power. For this unique, first concert in Denmark, she is accompanied by sadcore legend Chris Brokaw of Codeine and the Catalan troubadour Refree.

ROYCE DA 5’9”/US He has shared the stage with Eminem in the duo Bad Meets Evil, worked as ghost writer for Dr. Dre and is part of the super group Slaughterhouse. The indie rapper from Rhode Island has, if anybody, been one of the pioneers when it comes to weaken the distinction between alternative rock, poetry slam and hip hop. On the latest album Li(f)e, the protest hip hopper raps on top of an instrumental backing that has more in common with swampy, white roots rock than chocolate-brown soul or R&B.

SANTIGOLD/US As far back as in 2008, Roskilde Festival had its eye on Santigold who with great self-confidence treated the audience at the Cosmopol stage with her chic mix of R&B, dub, new wave and hyper urban pop. Now the follow-up to her debut album is finally on its way, and judging from the reception of her current single, the mainstream audience has missed her as much as we have. The catchy tune “Disparate Youth” seems to have become one of the defining tunes of 2012 already.

SHLOHMO/US Henry Laufer – the real name behind Shlohmo – is a child of the same Los Angeles that has delivered former Roskilde artists such as Gonjasufi and The Gaslamp Killer. He is only in his early 20s but he is soon-to-be recognised as one of the stars in the major city’s underground. The young beat smith cuts into a personal niche with his delicate, electronic music. The music is based on several thresholds, including abstract hip hop, nature programme soundtracks in the vein of Boards of Canada and post-London dubstep.

SPECTOR/ UK 2012 may very well be the year for Spector. The suit-clad boys have been called London’s answer to The Strokes, but judging from the first singles the five-piece sounds more like a new shoot off the same branch as Roxy Music, Pulp and The Killers. Spector has the right mix of youthful zest for life, quintessential British weltschmerz and humorous tongue-in-cheek to go far.

JØRGEN TELLER & THE EMPTY STAIRS feat. LAZARA/ DK/BEL With two drummers – Tobias R. Kirstein as a regular feature and Belgian Lazara visiting – Jørgen Teller & The Empty Stairs become an experience out of the ordinary. Presenting a combination of improvisation and psychedelic energy the guitarist Jørgen Teller, bassist Søren Gorm and the rest of the entourage short-circuit your mind with beautiful noise where the entrance to heaven is sprinkled with rusty nails and tricky pitfalls. TER HAAR/DE Berlin’s equivalent to Battles, Ter Haar, started out as an instrumental band, which you feel in the musicality and attention to detail in all of the trio’s songs. The ambition is edgy, complex post-rock that makes you want to dance rather than count time signatures. Ter Haar prove that challenging music doesn’t need to be without a sense of humour. TODAY IS THE DAY/ US Don’t be fooled by the optimistic and seize the dayish band name. With legend, riff wizard and daredevil Steve Austin at the helm, Today Is The Day is a style-defining and cultish band of the extreme. With jagged rhythms, metallic brutishness and a geeky attention to detail, these veterans carve their own bloody niche in today’s metal scene. THE TODDLA T SOUND/ UK Sheffield’s own Toddla T has DJ’ed longer than he has been able to hold a driver’s license. Today he is a well-established British DJ act, for instance at the hot London club Fabric and on BBC Radio 1. Based on the two albums Skanky Skanky and Watch Me Dance, Toddla T now goes all the way with a show featuring a sonic vortex of dancehall, house, garage and countless other dance genres from both Great Britain and the Caribbean.

touchy mob

TOUCHY MOB/DE How would Kraftwerk’s robots sound if they grabbed the acoustic guitar? Touchy Mob presents an idea of this scenario. Despite the band name, this is an austere solo project where the bearded Ludwig Plath with his acoustic guitar, a little electronics and angular time signatures create a personal sound that alternates between organic warmth and cold electronic dystopia. With few means Touchy Mob creates his very own ‘folk techno’. BOUBACAR TRAORÉ/MALI Having played for over 40 years, Boubacar Traoré makes his Roskilde debut, and not one day too soon. Actually, it’s a minor legend that we can finally welcome to Roskilde Festival. With a voice that sounds like it has slow-ripened in the sun, Traoré plays the blues with the acoustic guitar as the main accompaniment. Humble and intimate music, often frayed by melancholy. Don’t miss a meeting with a West African veteran whose status in his native country is on par with Ali Farka Touré. TRASH TALK/US You shouldn’t really use too many words to describe a band such as Trash Talk. With this kind of hardcore band, it’s all about getting into the eye of the storm

81

and sweat off a few pounds. Screaming, vocal cordwrecking voices and aggressive riffs dominate Trash Talk’s ultra-short and unmelodious punk songs that often transform band and audience into one giant monster with arms and legs sticking in all directions.

MAÏA VIDAL/FR Paris calls for a soundtrack of accordion, glockenspiel and sweet charm. Maïa Vidal is a worldling with several cities as her home turfs, but her primarily English-language songs bring about a feeling of the city of lights. Her music is rich on classic Seine atmosphere. The well-travelled Parisienne uses accordion, guitar, violin and various toy instruments in her both playful and nostalgic universe. the vaccines

THE VACCINES/ UK British band The Vaccines have marched straight into the hearts of both the music press and audience. The formula behind their music is a tried and tested one, but nonetheless very effective: catchy rock that just about contains the quintessence of every band of quality ever to grace the loudspeakers of any Ramonesposter-decorated teenage room.

WARBRINGER/ US Thrash metal enjoys a renaissance right now. Warbringer belongs to this wave and obviously adore 80s metal elements such as gas-guzzling tempos, long hair and windswept guitar solos. But the Californian band is not just a tribute to bygone times. Hardened by intense touring and sweaty mosh pits since 2004, the L.A. thrashers’ brutal songs mutate in new ways – often with a destructive undercurrent of death metal.

boubacar traoré got the nickname ‘kar kar’, or in English: ‘the dribbler’, when he played football in his youth.

TUNE-YARDS/US Merrill Garbus has thoroughly studied the great pop cookbook. However, it seems that she has read it backwards and upside down. WHOKILL, the second album under the moniker tUnE-yArDs, has made the woman with the androgynous African voice the new prodigy of mad pop. A sister-in-spirit of Animal Collective, Björk and Dirty Projectors. Garbus’ music waddles and hobbles charmingly out there, highfiving East Africa, R&B, hip hop and avant-garde along the way.

DANYEL WARO/ REU Réunion lies east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The tiny dot on the map has its own, original music. The ritualistic droning style of Maloya was created by the descendants of black slaves and has a strong appeal to the sense of independence in the islanders. Despite his partially French origin, Danyel Waro is one of the most outstanding ambassadors of this culture. The islanders love him as a unique musician, poet, storyteller, freedom fighter and commentator.

LARS WINNERBÄCK/ S Sweden’s perhaps most popular rock singer nowadays is called Lars Winnerbäck, a troubadour with a bulging song catalogue and a huge ecstatic crowd celebrating him as one of the brightest shining lights of the Swedish songwriting tradition. On his latest album Tänk om jeg ångrar mig, och sen ångrar mig igen, synthesizers and electric guitars move away from the ballad tradition, which has previously been the popular Swede’s domain. WIZ KHALIFA/ US You’ve probably heard “Black and Yellow”. With this hit, Wiz Khalifa went straight for the heart of the audience and gave both Drake and Lil Wayne a run for their money about being the young generation’s biggest hip hop hero. In the course of numerous mixtapes and other releases Cameron Jibril Thomaz has expanded his fan base with a persistence, energy and dedication, which also shows during live shows as a true contrast to his cannabis-seasoned and laid-back hip hop. YELAWOLF/US Alabama has no reputation as a hip hop mecca compared to Los Angeles or Detroit. At least not yet. Yelawolf is one of the southern state city’s new ambassadors and has, despite his skin colour, been the new black for some time in the global hip hop club. A skinny country boy brought up on Lynyrd Skynyrd, but with an aggressive, vicious and virtuous rap style that places him just as much in the company of Tech N9ne as Eminem.

WEEDEATER/ US The initiated call it sludge. You could also simply describe Weedeater’s sound as a cross between AC/DC and Black Sabbath with a Dixie flag hanging in the rehearsal room. Weedeater are without a doubt good-natured Southern folks – the band’s first album was called ... And Justice For Y’all with a howdy to Metallica’s classic. The music, however, is a deadly mixture of fast riffs, whipped drums and growling vocals.

with the super rock groups The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, Jack White now takes the stage himself, and the first live shows reveal an artist at the peak of his career. Ready with songs from the new solo album, Blunderbuss, and picks from the rich back catalogue. With Jack White, the reawakening of the classic rock tradition continues.

More Than Music – crazier than ever

Roskilde Festival is about experiences that turn you and your world upside down. This year, our More Than Music program is bigger and better than ever. Some events require your participation – others will just push you over – but what they all have in common is that they will stretch your limits. On the next pages we will guide you to the highlights in this year’s More Than Music program.

Together with the Copenhagen Gallery V1, we have asked the world’s perhaps best graffiti painter Steve Powers to paint the bandstand wall by Orange Stage. In the 90’s Steve Powers was part of the legendary “On The Go Magazine”, which you could call the world’s first street art bible. Today, among other things, he works on spicing

a small, closed room without it being about speed dating. Einat Amir calls herself a provocateur of intimacy, and if you have the courage, you’ll accept the challenge of going into a small soundproof box with a complete stranger. A voice will tell you both what you have to do in the box, and four minutes later you’ll know a stranger better than you know the person you picked up in your camp last night. If you have the guts, that is.

This year, more than music presents the biggest and most ambitious programme yet.

After four minutes in the hands of Einat Amir, you can take your new friend to Raumlabor, which is one of the wildest artist groups in Berlin. They have been called activistic urbanists, and their art is meant as comments on the surroundings they live in. You’ll be asked to lay your head on the shoulder of the person in front of you, or forehead against forehead until your breathing is totally synchronized. This is not for the faint of heart, and it is not an experience you are likely to forget easily either. We could spend most of this book explaining you what a theremin is and how it works! However, we’ll only say that it is an instrument like no other in this world. Festival stories, flying haystacks and a party you’ll never forget This is Roskilde Festival as you have never seen and experienced it before – and YOU need to take part!

You’re sitting in your camp staring blankly into the air. Suddenly an enormous parade passes by. Complete with mobile haystacks, UFO’s, a Chinese dragon, a container ship and a hand-knitted caravan. Welcome to Roskilde Festival’s Art Parade. It is a big mobile exhibition, demonstration and performance and among the contributors are a long line of Danish and international artists. It’s cool, spacy, political and psychedelic, but the best thing is that you can take part yourself. The Art Parade is produced in collaboration with the Museum for Contemporary art in Roskilde, but as mentioned, we need you as well. If you’re more into words than parade, join in when The Moth invites you in for storytelling in their unique Moth way. The Moths are among the best storytellers in the world and are known for their phenomenal ability to catch the listeners’ stories and bring them to life. This is where you need to share

your best, funniest, most beautiful, most incredible, saddest, unforgettable and secret Roskilde Festival stories with other guests, artists, volunteers and employees. You’re on the train coming home from work or school. Suddenly the guy next to you takes off his trousers and you think: ”Oh, great. One of those days”. But when EVERYBODY around you suddenly takes off their trousers you know it will NOT be one of those days after all. You have landed in the middle of a Charlie Todd flash mob. In his native America Charlie Todd, who refers to himself as a ”super prankster”, is the king off flash mobs and his Improv Everywhere collective can now be experienced in Denmark for the first time ever. We don’t want to give away too much info on the action besides the fact that Charlie Todd and Improv Everywhere will open the Festival Area on Thursday afternoon, and will invite you to Black Tie Beach at the swimming lake as well.

During the festival you can experience a choir consisting of a hundred people singing about environmental challenges, the worlds perhaps only MPTREE alongside Roskilde Festival’s first ever alternative cowboy saloon. We are more than excited to see how the many thrilling projects turn out. You can experience Dream City in camping area P (East).

Climb the pyramid During the spring, festival guests have conjured up a lot of new ideas for different projects, which are located in Dream City. One idea is a pyramid that you can climb. From the top you are encouraged to say something nice to your fellow festival guests. The pyramid is a unique version of Charlie Todd and Improv Everywhere’s installation ‘Say Something Nice’ built in Dream City. Two festival guests are responsible for the design and erection of the pyramid. Their design should function both as a place where you can meet and hang out on the steps of the pyramid, and a megaphone on top of the pyramid where you are encouraged to say something nice to each other. Visit Dream City if you want to see the finished version of the pyramid and experience the many other exciting projects and happenings that the festival guests in Dream City have created.

A food policy, food events and focus on sustainability and the environment are only some of the areas of interest at Roskilde Festival 2012. Food should be an experience in itself, and not just a question of going hungry or not. That is why we have set a food strategy for the festival until 2014 – one that focuses on exciting food experiences and what you eat while enjoying the music. The Roskilde Festival food policy Our attitude towards the food you buy at the festival is clear. It must live up to our high standards, and we emphasize that the ingredients should be fresh and the food homemade when ever possible. Ecology and sustainability are important issues for Roskilde Festival. Our mission is to increase the amount of organic and sustainable products in the food stalls. Because of that, the food stalls try to include as many Fairtrade, organic and local ingredients as possible in their assortment. The food policy also ensures access to a diverse selection of food at the festival and camping areas – also when it comes to size and price.

Fine food and fast food You can get pretty much everything at Roskilde Festival, from sushi to shawarma. The prices differ depending on where and what you want to eat, so we encourage you to have a look around all the different food shops before you order. DTU is collaborating with Roskilde Festival on making this year’s festival a better, more sustainable event than ever before. Nearly 100 DTU engineering students are working at this year’s festival to improve acoustics on the stages, setting up climate-friendly cooling solutions, and they’re improving the festival’s waste management capabilities. They’re also in charge of activities for festival-goers – including an interactive foosball generator and an installation made from recycled materials. You can meet the DTU team at the Sustainable Lab in front of the Odeon stage. They’ll tell you about all the projects they’re working on, and show you how to get involved in building the giant recycled materials installation or generate green energy while you’re queuing up for an event or a stand. No more crying over wasted food

Fresh produce that ends up in a dumpster is a no go at Roskilde Festival, so after the festival a big kitchen is set up and 25 volunteers will cook from the leftover groceries. The willing team of volunteers can easily end up with more than 100 kilos of fresh beef and vegetables which they will work magic with in the creative kitchen. The result will be ready-made dinners, which will be served at the Salvation Army’s shelters and asylum centres, where they can be frozen and used when needed. A smaller pita bread This year and for the first time, Roskilde Festival is working with the company AgroTech on de-

veloping a model for reducing food wastage during the festival. Three food stalls have agreed to participate in the experiments. For example one stall serves a smaller pita bread this year because too much was wasted when cutting the larger breads, and another stall has improved their stock management to avoid defrosting too much meat for their burgers. AgroTech will follow the three stalls closely before, during and after the festival. The objective is to create a method, which can be used to reduce food wastage in all the stalls and make Roskilde festival even more sustainable in the future.

Go green There are lots of other green initiatives. For example ByBi who teach socially dis advantaged people beekeeping and honey production and can show you how to start your own bee farm. Go green and visit Green City and Trade Zone.

Please note that you cannot expect Roskilde Festival to refund any stolen wristbands or items. Please contact your insurance company instead. explore Roskilde Festival on your own. If you are under 15 years of age you must be accompanied by an adult (18+) whom you know.
