Academic PROGRAMMES
We welcome applications from international students who wish to join us for a term or longer, and we offer a very flexible range of programmes to suit a wide variety of interests and abilities.
DIRECT ENTRY INTO:
PREPARATORY SCHOOL
International pupils with a good level of English may be accepted for direct entry into Year 3, 4, 5, or 6 (age 7-11) and support is provided for international pupils where appropriate, however we do advise that pupils with limited English receive some form of English tuition before arriving at Rossall Preparatory School.
SENIOR SCHOOL
International pupils with excellent levels of English are accepted directly into our full British curriculum programmes in the Senior School including GCSE, A Level/BTEC and IB.
Pupils applying for a place within year groups 7, 8 and 9 will be integrated in almost all lessons. Pupils needing additional support with the English language will have EAL support usually in place of language lessons to ensure their English language ability is developed.
Pupils needing English support and entering year groups 10 and 11 have access to a variety of programmes including a pre GCSE entry level course, or a one-year IGCSE programme, depending on the level of English support required and the year of entry.
Pupils also have the opportunity to take English Language exams such as Cambridge First Certificate, CAE or IELTS.

PROGRAMMES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
We offer a range of specially designed programmes for international students of different ages and abilities.
In all cases, students benefit from the specialist support of the English as an Additional Language teachers who are highly qualified and experienced in working with non-native speakers. Students enjoy full immersion in the life of our thriving day and boarding community alongside their British peers, whilst being taught within bespoke academic courses and supported with the English language development. This enables them to develop their English language skills outside the classroom and facilitates a smooth transition to the next stage of their learning.

PRE-SIXTH FORM PROGRAMME
15 to 16
15 to 16
This is the most common pathway for our new International students. This is a bespoke 1-year programme designed for pupils for whom English is not their first language, but they are able to write and read in English to a reasonable level (B2 or above on the CEFR scale). This pathway allows pupils to complete the 2-year GCSE course in 5 or 6 subjects in just 1-year, as well as providing a rounded education by attending classes in other subjects. It also ensures recognition in other countries’ educational systems such as Germany.
Pupils take GCSE qualifications in Biology, Maths, First Language English, Geography, and a Mother Tongue First Language qualification, as well as any appropriate EAL (English as an Additional Language) qualifications. Pupils also have further classes in Chemistry, Physics, DT, Art and Games (Sports). Pupils receive credit for these courses through our internal Rossall Diploma exams, and they receive a transcript of results from the school, which will be used when discussing progression into our Sixth Form.
PRE-SIXTH FORM FOUNDATION PROGRAMME
The Foundation Programme is specially designed for pupils who need more support in developing their written and spoken English, and is appropriate for pupils with a B1 or lower level of English. Pupils focus on increasing their English level and can practice this by applying it in a variety of classes. Pupils take classes in EAL (English as an Additional Language), Maths, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Business and Art, as well as Games (Sports) and PSHE (Personal Social and Health Education). The 1-year programme will result in the completion of our Rossall Diploma exams, where pupils receive a transcript of results that can be used to apply for further study. This can also be used when discussing progression into our Sixth Form.
MAINSTREAM YEAR 11
15 to 16
7 to 17
In some cases, it is appropriate for pupils to enter into the Mainstream pathway. This is normally when a pupil has already been studying GCSEs and they have a strong level of English (C1 or above). This would involve a pupil entering into courses half-way through their duration, so pupils will be expected to catch-up with their work independently. We will work with parents and pupils to find the most suitable subject choices and pupils will often have a reduced timetable and not aim to take the formal GCSE qualifications in all subjects. Entry to this programme is made on a case-by-case basis, based on discussion with pupils and parents.
ROSSALL SUMMER SCHOOL
Pupils wanting to gain a taste of Rossall life for two to eight weeks can do so during our Summer months. With 20 hours of English learning a week followed by activities and with trips included too, pupils can enjoy life at Rossall before deciding whether to join one of the courses above.

Programme SAMPLE
1 to 1 Lesson
Students will receive weekly one to one lessons with one of our distinguished faculty members.
Performance Class
A weekly opportunity for students to perform the repertoire they are working on and receive constructive feedback from their peers in a supportive, positive and informal environment. Piano workshops also include group discussion of composers, pianists, piano repertoire and performance techniques.
Aural Skills
These classes help to develop student’s aural awareness, which is key to becoming an all-round musician. Developing a student’s musical ear helps them to assess their own playing more effectively, raising their awareness of balance, timing and musical shaping whilst improving their musical memory.
Technique
Students will receive support to develop their technical skill and virtuosity. They will look into various schools of thought on piano technique and have the opportunity to share tips and tricks to overcome difficulties in the repertoire they are studying.
Sight Reading
Weekly classes will help students to build their confidence and level of sight reading ability. Students will learn how to spot key features and patterns that will help them to sight read increasingly difficult pieces quickly and effectively, skills that are vital for learning repertoire. Students will be placed into small groups according to their initial sight reading ability.
Musical Wellbeing
Alexander Technique is proven to help musicians to improve their movement and posture whilst playing, as well as helping to eliminate tension and anxiety. Coupled with a healthy diet and regular exercise through Rossall School’s innovative physical fitness programme, our young musicians are well equipped to meet the demands of performing at the highest level.
Practice Time
Recommended hours will vary depending upon factors such as age and level.
