President’s Message paragraphs. We have also had a number of subcommittee meetings.
Once again, I seem to have been busy since my last ‘message’ to you. We had almost 50 ORs and friends to make a successful evening at The Oriental Club in London in September and the following week the sun shone on us in Wilmslow for the Manchester Lunch, which was also a great success. Again, John Whitlock ran the Midlands Dinner with precision starting with the AGM, which lasted about 1 minute - very efficient; a very enjoyable occasion. I also travelled to Düsseldorf for the German Dinner, held in the restaurant of the parents of an OR. It was a memorable evening with 45 ORs from all over Germany, many having not seen each other for a number of years, coming together. I must thank Dr Doris Dohman and Sharon Potts for all their hard work in putting this very successful evening together. We are hoping to go to Munich this year. Reports on these events are in the following pages. Your Committee met on 10th October and a number of issues arose, some of which are mentioned in the following
We have been looking at how we can contribute to school life and a number of areas have been identified with a positive outcome. Firstly, we appreciate that the School only has certain monies available each year for spending on projects. The Rossallian Club are able to help and after discussions with The Head and The Bursar, we have put £4000 aside this year and have asked Heads of Departments to bid for this money. They have to give us detailed information on their project/s and the reasons behind the bid along with details of who will benefit and costings. These papers have been sent out and we await their replies. Secondly, we were approached by the Choir to help in funding a trip to Dallas which took place before Christmas and we agreed to donate £500. We have also invested some funds into the archives and further details are on page 10. These projects are all worthwhile and we are looking to seek acknowledgement from those involved that the Rossallian Club is working with the School. It will hopefully make those who are leaving think about being involved with the Club. The Armistice Day service was held in typical Rossall weather with the wind and rain driving in from the sea so we all met in the calm atmosphere of Chapel. The names of all those ORs and Masters who died in 1915 were read out each represented by a current
Rossallian, carrying a small cross with a poppy on it, which they placed on the Altar in the Memorial Chapel. It was very moving. On behalf of all Rossallians, I laid a wreath to those who gave their lives for us. When I was at school at the end of November, I was talking to Emma Sanderson, our Bursar, about the clock tower. Many will know it has been defunct for a long time. I am delighted to inform you that this project, of renewing the inside and making it safe, has begun. It is a very expensive exercise. All the beams and floors have to be replaced as well as the stairs. I am hopeful that it will be operational for the Triennial in April. I would be delighted to drive up to Rossall and see the OR flag flying, which takes me on to the last point. Please put 16th/17th April in your diaries for the Triennial. Details are at the back of this magazine. At last year’s gathering we had 180 for dinner; I would be delighted to see this increase to 300. When I was in Düsseldorf I mentioned the Dinner and I feel certain that we will be having a table from Germany. Surely we can contact our friends and get tables together. It was a superb evening in 2015; let’s try and make it even better in 2016. It would be remiss of me if I did not thank Sharon Potts for all her enthusiasm and hard work on our behalf. It is very much appreciated. Floreat Rossallia Roger Walker (M 57-61)

A word from The Head, Elaine Purves As I write my welcome to the Old Rossallian, I am sitting in the departure lounge of Moscow Airport, awaiting a flight to St Petersburg. The snow is falling and I am glad that I have packed my warmest Rossall rugby-touchline-standard, sheepskin-lined boots! I have had some successful international recruitment trips so far - Hong Kong, Vietnam and now Russia in fairly quick succession. It has been excellent to get out to a few of the countries that our international students hail from; I have met many outstanding prospective students and gained an even greater understanding of the regard in which a British, and indeed a Rossall, education is held across the globe. Locally, we had a very well attended Open Morning in early October and I was delighted to see families join us from all corners. The beginning of the Michaelmas Term heralded two important changes at school: firstly, the introduction of our new uniform and secondly, our new Senior School curriculum. Both projects were the result of much discussion, debate and decision-making; I am delighted by how positively both have been received. You may be interested to hear that Latin has made a
return to the curriculum, that Mandarin is being offered as part of our Modern Language carousel, that Theatre Studies and Thinking Skills have been introduced and cookery is back in the guise of Food Studies! We have enjoyed some wonderful OR events and gatherings since I last wrote here and I am sure you will enjoy reading about them in this edition of the magazine. I am looking forward very much to my first Triennial Dinner in April over the OR Weekend - we have an exciting programme of events lined up, including cookery demonstrations, guest lectures and an audience with The Head! I do hope to see you there. As ever, I hope this finds you in good spirits and good health, however near or far you now are from Rossall. Please do keep in touch and feel free to come and visit. With best wishes to you and your family.
A word from The Secretary, Ian Preston (J&Pe 66-73) I previously referred to the task of taking over the job as Secretary as daunting, but I have to confess that as I settle in to the role it is nothing but a pleasure. The role of the Club Secretary is now very different than I imagine it was previously, largely as a result of the mass of social media now available, which when employed correctly offers so many benefits. What also makes the job so much easier is being able to utilise the marketing expertise within the School. For so many of my predecessors this just wasn’t available; there was no Marketing

Department! But now that there is and having it available to us is such a benefit. Many thanks to that great little team, and of course that vital link, our Alumni Officer, Sharon. The success of the working relationship between the School and the Rossallian Club is easily quantified by the number of ORs attending functions, which continues to rise.
with the game itself but how we play it. In the absence of any governing body or code of conduct (such as those which apply to rugby and football), we have merrily put dainty young girls up against blundering male hulks, which, on reflection, is clearly inappropriate! So, working closely with the School, we are developing a code to enable us all to play our game safely for as The integration of the OR website into the School’s new website is now long as there is sand on the beach complete and looking very good. We and the tide continues to go out! So had a minor issue that we couldn’t ‘kill boys and girls, do come and show off’ the old website, but hopefully this your support by signing up to play has now been resolved. The OR email at the OR Weekend. address is being used to a greater Please get your booking for April’s degree and I am always pleased to OR Weekend and Triennial Dinner hear of any news from ORs. in as soon as possible and don’t miss out on a great weekend. Branch Reports Manchester Lunch
In September, 30 ORs and partners met at The Stanneylands Hotel on a lovely sunny day. Welcomed from School were the Head, Elaine Purves, School Captain Jack England and Deputy School Captain
Jonathan Lee. Some familiar faces were missing, which was a shame, but we were delighted to welcome new ones. Under the careful eye of the Manager, Eamonn, we were very well looked after and the food was up to its usual high standard. The Head gave an up-beat report on School and invited all to visit and see the transformation that has taken place over the last few years. Those attending were Robert and Donna Ashworth, Howard and Hilary Bentley, George and Diana Ayres, Miles Green, Jack England, Peter and Helen Hardern, Anne Shepherd, Henry Shepherd and Jane Holden, Colin and Rosemary Hurrell, Jonathan Lee, Geoffrey Mills, Ian Preston, Elaine Purves, Andrew Reid, Mark Rubin, Heather Slater, David Taylor, Roger and Christine Walker Jessica Williams, Callum Baxter, Guy and Jenni Wright.
Birmingham Dinner The Birmingham and Midlands AGM and Annual dinner was held on Friday 13th November at the Copt Heath Golf Club. Twenty eight Old Rossallians and their guests were at the dinner this year with a number of regulars, with several people either attending for the first time or returning after a few years away. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves, talking about the current Rossall and the Rossall they remember. This was the theme used by our guest speaker, Henry Shepherd, Development Director, ably supported by our President, Roger Walker who along with his wife, Chris, were able to join us again. The food and surroundings were once again first class which easily reflected all those in attendance. Another great evening with Rossall at its heart in so many ways. There are many Old Rossallians in the Midlands region and beyond and it would be great if even more of you could join us in 2016.
“It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves

Late Summer BBQ Guests were once again fortunate to enjoy a pleasant September evening at the Oriental Club for the Late Summer BBQ. Enjoying the benefits of the sitting out on the terrace, ORs were able to mingle and reminisce about their school days whilst enjoying a delicious barbecue.
6
The Head, Elaine Purves, gave a brief update on latest developments at the School and, in usual Rossall style, the evening ended with the singing of The Carmen. Our thanks to those who joined us for the evening which is now an annual event in our calendar.

German Dinner
Despite an absence of 3 years, we were thrilled with the response to the German Dinner which took place in D端sseldorf in November. Forty five guests gathered at Restaurant Reusch, owned by the family of OR Robert Schultz (SE 13-14), for an evening of good food and good company. Roger Walker and Christine attended on behalf of The Club and Sharon Potts and Doris Dohmen attended from the School. The atmosphere was truly magical and, as the evening drew to a close, our younger guests went on to enjoy the D端sseldorf nightlife. Our thanks to OR Alex Broszio (MC 03-05) for providing photographs and to the Schultz family for their hospitality.

Christmas Service The annual Old Rossallian Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols once again ended the year on a high note as over 400 Old Rossallians and their families joined us in Chapel. The Choir, aided by ORs including Jane Wilkinson, Peter Bowden, Jimmy Canning and Matthew Baldwin, were magnificent and it is wonderful to see more ORs returning each year to join us at this event. Those invited to read included Graeme Marrs (F 51-57), Aimee Hindle (Wr 12-14), Ian Preston (J & Pe 66-73), Francesca Parker (Dn 98-09), Jimmy Canning (Pe 00-07), Hannah Jenkinson (JS & Dn 96-12) and Jake Thompson (MC 00-09). Afterwards, guests were warmed up with mulled wine and mince pies in Dining Hall, whilst catching up with friends and sharing their Christmas plans. It was, indeed, a fitting way to end what has been a very successful year of events for the Old Rossallian community.

Sports Round-up Cyril Gray Golf Tournament The 2015 Cyril Gray golf tournament was again played in glorious weather at Worplesdon Golf Club at the end of June. Thirty two of the 64 schools that play in the Halford Hewitt play a knockout competition with each team consisting of 3 pairs, aged over 50, playing foursomes. Up until 1996, Rossall were the dominant school in this event, winning 10 times in 16 years. Since then progress has been more difficult, with only one final reached up to this year. However this year Rossall was able to field its strongest side for many years, and this was evidenced by getting to the final against Watson’s, winning all matches comfortably. In the final it was 1 match all, with Rossall 1 up with 3 to play in L-R Jeremy Smith (F 74-81), Mike Ewart (R 64-74) Geoff Henney (SE 60-64) (Captain), the deciding match, but in the Christian Butler (R 72-83), Robert Fox (Fn 68-71) and Noel Muscutt (MC 75-80) event this match was lost on the final green. All 7 of this year’s players have previously played in the Halford Hewitt, with 5 of them still being current players. This influx of new ‘young’ talent is very encouraging for our future prospects.
Shoot In September, ORs were invited to join John Milne at a shoot on the Shaftesbury Estate in Dorset. Those attending were (L-R) Alf Tansey (F 49-54), Neale (Jonny) Moss(Pe 71-75), Edward Kershaw (MF 83-88), James Woods(Pe 83-88) ,Edward Hartley(MC 83-93), John Milne (R 58-63), Russ Hargreaves(Pe 69-75) and Andrew Markland (R 66-75).

Lest We Forget At the School’s annual Remembrance Day Service in November, Roger Walker attended to lay a wreath in the Memorial Chapel to remember all those ORs lost in conflicts throughout the world. As part of the School’s WW1 commemorations, the names of each OR lost during each year between 1914 and 1918 are read out and a pupil places a cross and poppy in the Memorial Chapel; this year, 71 names were read out. As always, it was a very moving service which highlighted to pupils the importance of remembering all those ORs who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Crescent Honours Board A recent telephone call to the Development Office led us to a reclamation yard in Preston, where an Honours Board from Crescent House had been lying for some time. An avid local historian wrote down some of the names and, after Googling them, connected the board to Rossall. After confirming that the names listed on the board were ORs, we were able to secure the purchase of the board and are currently awaiting its return to the School. Please keep a look out for any items in your local reclamation yards (or pubs!) and let us know if you come across anything which might belong to Rossall.
Archives There has been a significant increase in the number of enquiries from people researching their family history, especially since the start of the WW1 commemorations. Due to a lack of resources, the archives at the School are in need of some restoration. The Rossallian Club have agreed to fund a temporary Archivist in order to make the archives more accessible and establish a software system which will eventually go online. Claire Moore joined us in November and has already made great strides in getting the archives into some kind of order. Claire will be selecting pieces to put in a display during the OR Weekend in April. If you are interested in finding out more about the archives, please email Claire at c.moore@rossall.org.uk

As always, it was a very moving service
Pizza Evenings Once again, the Rossallian Club is hosting a number of Pizza Evenings this year in order to connect with current Sixth Formers before they leave Rossall. Students benefit from learning about the Club and how it can help them later in life, whether after university or in work. The links with the Club ensure that Rossallians are given a worldwide network of friendship and support.
Old Rossallian of The Year 2016 Each year, the Rossallian Club will recognise the exceptional achievements and contributions of one of our Old Rossallians. We are looking for an individual who is a true inspiration to all Rossallians and who has achieved something remarkable, gone above the call of duty or undertaken a challenge for a good cause. This is the second time this award will be presented and last year’s recipient, Nick Young (Pe 82-89), has certainly raised the bar for his successor; Nick swam the Channel in just over 13 hours and raised over £100,000 in the process.
If you would like to nominate someone for this award, please submit the following information:
?
• Your name and House/years at Rossall School • The Nominee’s name and house/years at Rossall (if known to you) • Your relationship to them • A brief summary (no more than 200 words) of why you think they should receive this award The winner will be announced at the OR Weekend. Please email your nominations to: s.potts@rossall.org.uk by Friday 11th March.

Russ Hargreaves (Pe 69-75) on his marriage to Nicola in October. Russ was joined by fellow ORs (L -R Ian Preston, Henry Shepherd, Nichola Hargreaves, Jonathan Williams, Russ Hargreaves and Neale(Jonny) Moss) Tom Gregory(MF 07-14) who has landed a role in the forthcoming BBC drama, The A Word, which will be shown early this year. Navid Naqvi (MF 86-95) will be playing The Sultan in Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ next year at The Prince Edward Theatre in the West End. David McKee (J&A 49-56) who, along with his wife Renee, was recently honoured at a luncheon hosted by Sir Nicholas Serota, at the Tate Britian for their contributions to the art world and to mark their retirement and closing of the McKee Gallery in New York.
All in a good cause Jonathan Chard (Pe 06-13) is going to be scaling Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (standing at 5,895 metres/19,341ft) later this year to raise £5000 for the Alzheimer’s Society. Having lost his Nana and Great Aunt in the past two years to the disease, and with his Granny currently living with dementia, he has experienced first-hand what it is like for a family to care for somebody whose essence is slowly but surely disappearing. He began his training early in September climbing Snowdon, Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach and has done numerous treks in the Peak District, Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. He also plans to climb additional peaks around Britain and abroad before departing for Tanzania this summer.
If you wish to track Jonathan’s progress, he has created a blog where you can keep up-to-date with his progress at www.jonnychard.blogspot. com. If you would like to donate, please visit JustGiving www.justgiving.com/JonnyChard, or you can text JJCK95 and £amount to 70070. This summer, ORs Thao Ha (R 08-14) and Cassy Ngu (R 10-14) are taking on the Machu Picchu trek across Peru with their universities, University of Nottingham and University of Bath, in aid of Action Against Hunger. The journey will take place between 20th and 30th August. They are aiming to raise a minimum of £2990, all of which will be donated to Action Against Hunger to help fight malnutrition and end global hunger.

Father Richard Hugh Keble Prosser (DC & A 44-50) was born on 15th April 1931 in British Columbia, Canada, where his father was leading a mission. After attending prep school in Worcester, he came to Rossall and quickly established himself as a valuable member of the School community. He was a School Monitor, House Captain and School Captain. On leaving he received the Headmaster’s Prize, the Thomas Charles Smith History Prize and the Examination Prize. He also won the Bishop Lee Scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge. Following an appearance before a tribunal in 1953, he was registered as a Conscientious Objector and was therefore excused National Service. He taught at Cargilfield Prep School for two years before going to Cuddesdon Theological College. He was priested in 1958. He joined The Community of the Resurrection at Megan Budge (3rd June 1927 - 15th October 2015) Very many ex-JS pupils and colleagues will have been sad to learn of the death of Megan, wife of the late Bill Budge (Headmaster of JS from 1954 to 1976). Megan married Bill in 1953 and soon afterward assumed the role of a prep school headmaster’s wife; a position filled with great honour. Although a rather private person, she was the perfect headmaster’s wife; always supportive at Bill’s side for every occasion. She also undertook a considerable amount of teaching and, most important of all, had the utilmate responsibility for the catering and domestic staff. It speaks volumes for her management skills that there was such a small turnover in staff during her time and the quality of food was always oustanding. Mention of Megan’s home to any ex-JS boarder and they will think of the ‘Drawing Room’. Who could not be moved by the sight of a large group of youngsters,
Mirfield in 1962 and was awarded a PGCE in Education at the University of Leeds in 1963. He joined St Augustine’s Mission in Penhalonga, Zimbabwe in 1964, soon taking over as Principal. The Mission is set in beautiful surroundings in Zimbabwe’s Eastern mountain range, close to the Mozambique border. Despite the unrest in the country during the 1960’s and 70’s, he remained there for 26 years. Hugh returned the the UK and became Vicar of Pocklington at the suggestion of the then Archdeacon of York. He also served as a governor of Pocklington School. His relationship with the people of Pocklington was warm and friendly and in his clerical dress which he always wore, he was quite a feature in the town. There were two influences in his life which shaped his ministry; one was the great affection he had for his parents and the other was his love of the Book of Common Prayer. The Holy Communion was the backbone of his faith and ministry and he celebrated Communion every day. He was a dedicated man; selfless and truthful. A man of his word.
all well-scrubbed, hair combed, sitting on the carpet hugging their teddies, whilst Megan read bedtime stories to them in her most comforting voice. After Bill’s untimely death in 1976, Megan moved to Bury St Edmund where she lived for the remainder of her life. Her sister, Glenys (wife of Norman Ilett) lived close by in Diss. She became a full-time teacher in a local prep school and in her spare time busied herself with a mixture of social work, gardening and entertaining visitors. However, nothing gave her more pleasure than when she was surrounded by her three children, Duncan, Keith and Alison, with their respective spouses and ten grandchildren. All who knew Megan will always remember her with great respect. Jim Cowpe
