Aberdeen University Students’ Association (AUSA) have organised a heap of phenomenal events for your consumption this year and this Entertainment Guide is here to ensure that you don’t miss a trick!

All events listed here are correct at the time of print, but chances are we’ll be adding to them and things may change, so we highly recommend you also check out www.ausa. org.uk where any updates will be posted! There will be a number of venues that will be hosting events. Let us quickly introduce them to you…

The Freshers’ Week Marquee is located on the King’s Pitches right at the heart of campus - and will be hosting the majority of daytime events like our famous Freshers’ Fayres.

JP’s University Bar & Grill

It’s better than Kings and Queens, its better than Diamond rings … WILDCATS …WILDCATS! That’s right folks, JP’s University Bar and Grill is all that and more! It’s located on Littlejohn Street so if you live in halls, the No.20 bus drops you off right outside - preventing perspiration and the effort of walking up Kilimanjaro and back to wet your whistle (“wet your whistle” - my Grandad wrote that bit!) Anyways, back to business - what the hell goes on in this place? DJs check!... Live bands - check! Live sport - check! Pool tables - check! Food - check! Cheap drinks - check! Cocktails - check! Quiz - check! And lots more... JP’s is home to many of our lovely sports teams and societies so, like Cheers, if you are planning on joining a club - “every one will know your name.” Basically it’s a top place to hang out with friends and be merry before you put on your dancing shoes and head along to one of the many discothèques (“Discotheque” - Grandad is back!) Tiger Tiger

Tiger Tiger is Aberdeen’s premier night club and party venue. The Priory

Transport

Worried about how to get home from all of our fantastic Freshers’ Week events? Fear not! A transport link will be running from all our late night venues to Crombie-Johnston and Hillhead Halls to ensure you round off each night by getting home safely. This service is included in the price of your FW Ents Wristband or £2 per journey without one.

The Hub

The Hub is the home to the majority of AUSA services and one of the main social spaces on campus. It is also THE place to buy tickets for official AUSA events. The AUSA reception is open from 9am-5pm, Monday – Friday. (See Campus Map location #4)

Vue Cinema

Vue Cinema is the host of the Aberdeen University Students’ Association Freshers’ Film Festival. Vue is located near the Castlegate, where King Street and Union Street join in matrimony! The number 1 & 2 buses will drop you off just a hop, skip and jump away. Most nights there will be two screenings; the first at 10pm with the second at 10.30pm. Codona’s Amusement Park

Codonas is located at Aberdeen Beach. Simply catch the 14A bus to get here or enjoy a lovely walk. More details can be found at their website www.codonas.com

Easy Tiger

For all your woes and worries throughout the week, the everpopular Easy Tiger campaign is back. From condoms to directions and questions about the best place to get a kebab, the Tiger will be here to help you out. There will be an Easy Tiger stand within each official Late Night Venue offering you the chance to stock up on water, get help if you’re lost or not feeling too well or simply to get information. Did we mention we’ve got free condoms, too?

AUSA Wristband

You may have noticed a free AUSA Freshers’ Wristband in your Freshers’ Pack. Please keep this wristband with you throughout Freshers’ Week as it will get you loads of cool local discounts and identify you as a certified Fresher! PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT A FRESHERS’ WEEK ENTS WRISTBAND AND DOES NOT PERMIT ENTRY TO LATE NIGHT EVENTS

THURSDAY 17th SEPT Aberdeen Local Students’ Welcome Night Codona’s Amusement Park, Aberdeen Beach 7pm-9pm

Calling all Students who live in Aberdeenshire! Get ahead of the rest of the Freshers pack and take the chance to meet other home students at the AUSA’s Welcome Night. It’s also the first and best chance to get to know our volunteers, who will stand by you for the rest of Freshers’ Week and beyond! Don’t be shy, this is the best time to get together with other students and get a head start in meeting your Freshers’ Week comrades. Come with other home student friends, or rock up on your own, just make the most of this chance! You’ll get a letter in the post with details on how to sign up for this event.

SATURDAY19TH Move-In Weekend This self–explanatory event in the Fresher’s week calendar can often be the most stressful. But fear not!! AUSA are here to create a barrier between your (potentially) embarrassing parents and your cool new flatmates. Our trusty volunteers will help you out with your luggage and help you settle in, whilst providing some banter on the way!! Fear of taxis or buses? Then fear not, Aberdeen University Students Association is here yet again to save the day! We will be on hand to pick you up throughout Saturday and Sunday from both the train station and the airport, delivering you safely to your new digs. When you arrive look for a friendly volunteer waving a placard, and they will help you and your luggage onto the minibuses…be prepared for some bus sing-a-longs!

Welcome to Halls Hillhead Only - Games Hall 6.30 pm & 7.30 pm

If you are living in halls, it’s really important to go along to one of these events to find out everything you will need for an enjoyable stay. You will be introduced to key staff who are responsible for the smooth running of the site and who are there to help with any problem or query you might have. You’ll have the opportunity to go on a site tour, find out where all the local facilities are and where to go if you need help with anything. Also, the house rules will be explained to you so that you know what is expected of you while living in halls. Don’t worry Crombie Johnston Students – you’ll have your chance on Sunday!

Where You From?’

JP’s University Bar & Grill (See City Centre Map location # 1) 4pm – 1am (Event starts at 8pm) It’s your first night at Uni, so what better way to spend the evening than heading along to our first annual “Where you from?” night! This is the kick off night at JP’s University Bar and Grill, one of the Aberdeen University Student Association’s official Freshers’ Week partners. Where you from? is where students get the chance to mingle in style and have AUSA muster up the courage to ask the first bold pick up line of the week! A classic start to your university experience, with ace tunes, great drinks deals and loads of prizes to give away. The only question on everyone’s lips is “Where U From “?

Moving in Madness

SUNDAY20TH Move-In Weekend

Had a big leaving party on the Friday night that has rendered you useless for moving on the Saturday? Don’t despair! We’re back for another day of move in banter and by now we are true professionals. The banter is still flowing and with the fun stuff in sight, morale will be HIGH! Fear not, our highly skilled minibus drivers are back at the airport and train station to take you to your new home. It’s free you know, FREE!

Garden Tours

Departure from The Hub Reception (See Campus Map location #4) Tours begin at 2, 3 and 4pm Tour around the AUSA Wildlife and Veg Gardens, with an introduction from our environmentally friendly students. If a tour isn’t enough then stick around for a BBQ in the garden. Feast on our home-made products while listening to some good live music under the open sky starting at 3pm. The Wildlife Garden is located at 5 Dunbar Street (opposite Edward Wright building) Old Aberdeen, the one with the “ big blue gate” (See Campus Map)

What do you mean halls don’t do an evening meal on a Sunday!! Don’t panic folks, JP’s University Bar and Grill is calling all brain boxes, sports fanatics and hungry students!! If you want to have the opportunity to test your mental prowess, then get your friends together and come along to our very own AUSA pub quiz. There is no quiz quite like it in Aberdeen! It is here where the best minds of our generation come together to make merry and have a great time, and if that’s is not enough there is also great prizes and tasty food to accompany this mind warping event. With heaps of prizes to give away throughout the night and cheap drinks all night this is the best way to make new friends in the most bizarre way!! This is your official Aberdeen University Welcome. It’s your opportunity to meet Vice Principal Steve Logan, University Rector Stephen Robertson and enjoy a welcome from some of your AUSA Sabbatical Officers. They will introduce you to life at the University of Aberdeen and let you know what to expect over the next few years.

Campus Tours

Leaving on the hour from The Hub reception (See Campus Map location #4) 10am – 2pm leaving every half-hour Confused by campus? Can’t find a computer? Don’t know where your first lecture is? FEAR NOT! Your new best friends - the Freshers’ Volunteers - are back, filled with exciting facts ready to take you on a tour of our lovely campus. They know the hotspots, where to get a good lunch and will tell you stories as they take you around. If you fancy a guided tour of the campus then pop along to The Hub Reception and look for one of your trusty t-shirt clad friends!

International Students’ Drop-In Session Global Hub, 1st Floor, The Hub (See Campus Map location #4) 10am – 4pm

Drop in and have a chat with our International Student Advisers and the AUSA Info & Advice Service, who will be on hand to answer all your questions about living and studying in Aberdeen. This is not a formal presentation so feel free to drop in at a time to suit you.

International Study Abroad and Exchange Orientation KCG 7 (See Campus Map location #20 ) 11am

The orientation will cover a range of topics from academic to student life. This session is mandatory for all International Study Abroad and Exchange students to ensure a successful experience at University.

Erasmus and European Students

Fraser Noble Building, Lecture Theatre 1 (See Campus Map location #5) 11am This session will provide ERASMUS and European students with information on who to contact about your course, credit transfer and transcripts.

Aberdeen University Fayre

AUSA Marquee on King’s Pitches (See Campus Map location #24) 12pm-2pm Do you have burning questions about your classes? Do you have no idea where your first class is and what to expect? Do you need to get face to face with someone from your course to discuss what you’ll be doing for the next few years of your life? For the first time ever, we are hosting a University Fayre which is the perfect opportunity to get all your academic questions answered, so the rest of your university career is smooth sailing! Pop along to the University Fayre and set yourself up for a successful year (or 4) at Uni!

Union Daze

Not sure exactly what your first year at Uni will involve? Your trusty Sabbatical Officers will be on hand to introduce you to life at AU as it actually happens including your academic, social and working life. All your worries will be resolved in this one hour session where you can also ask real life students all the questions you want the TRUE answer to. There will be a short Q+A session afterwards where you can ask questions such as “What’s shinty?” Come along to New Kings 6 armed with questions and prepare to leave ready and willing to start the new term!

Meet at the Mercat Cross, Castle Gate (See City Centre Map location #57) Meet at 11:55pm for a Midnight Departure Tickets cost £6 each - Bought from the AUSA Reception, 2nd Floor, The Hub In the heart of Aberdeen lies a dark and mysterious history dating back hundreds of years. Join us as we take a walk through the streets of this historic city, exploring events which seem to have left a ghostly footprint behind them. Expect tales of witches, trial and punishment, smuggling and famous battles!

Fun on the pitches: AUSA Sports’ Fayre

AUSA Marquee on Kings Pitches (See Campus Map location #24) 11am – 3pm (Disabled access from 10:30am) Wondered when all your freebies will start rolling in? They start right here, right now on the most freebie-filled days of your life, The Freshers’ Fayres! The Tuesday of Freshers’ Week plays host to the ever-increasing, allencompassing AUSA Sport. Come along today to find out about Sport at Aberdeen University. Whether you want to play, compete, train or spectate, this is the place to fill your proverbial boots. Over 50 clubs will be present representing everything from Football and Rugby to Underwater Hockey! With Aberdeen Student Radio pumping out the tunes throughout the day, this is the perfect way to spend your Tuesday, just come along, enjoy the atmosphere and claim you freebies! There will be a poster sale on the lawn so use this opportunity to get some cool pics to decorate your new pad. Expect inflatable fun throughout the day with sumo suit, Bungee Run, a Surf Simulator, and an inflatable assault course too! Plan on coming to the Society Fayre tomorrow as well! Freshers’ Café on the Lawn!

AUSA Marquee on King’s Pitches (See Campus Map location #24) 11am - 3pm With so much to see and do at this year’s Freshers’ Fayres why not take some time to chill out in the Freshers’ Café. We’re open Tuesday and Wednesday on King’s Lawn so pop by and enjoy a bite to eat from the BBQ and something fruity and healthy too - guaranteed to leave you well fed, revived and raring to go.

Visit to Aberdeen Football Club for International Students

Meet at 11am at King’s College on the High Street in front of the Chapel (See Campus Map location #20) Aberdeen Football Club has a long history of success both within Scotland and Europe, with the 1980’s in particular being an era of unparalleled achievements. Once managed by Sir Alex Ferguson (of Manchester United fame), Aberdeen are in the Scottish Premier League playing teams such as Celtic and Rangers. Pittodrie was the first all-seated stadium in Britain. The visit will include seeing the pitch, dressing rooms and boot room. Tier 4 (Immigration) ‘What You Should Know’

MacRobert Building, Room 051 (See Campus Map location #8) 3pm - 4pm COMPULSORY SESSIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS International students (non-European Economic Area/Swiss students) who are subject to immigration control (need a visa/permission to stay in the UK) are required to attend one of these sessions.

The Hub – AUSA Joblink and Volunteering Centre, Floor 2 (See Campus Map location #4) 4pm - 6pm AUSA’s Joblink and Volunteering services cordially invite you to an early evening of vino, fromage and some knowledgeable people who can tell you how to enhance your CV and earn some dosh during your time in Aberdeen.

Café Scientifique - Brain Boost and Drugs from the Deep Tiki Cafe, Ground Floor, The Hub (See Campus Map location #4) 6pm - 7pm

Café Scientifique is a regular highlight of the science calendar at the University of Aberdeen. We’ll be talking about cutting-edge research happening on our very own doorstep in a relaxed atmosphere over a cup of coffee. First-up, Dr Alexandra Johnstone, gives an informal interactive talk about some of the perils of the Scottish diet. Come along to get some practical advice and sort myth from reality on how to get healthy. Then Prof. Marcel Jaspers, shows how to turn your hobbies into your studies, describing his work on finding cancer cures at the bottom of the world’s deepest oceans.

An Evening of Jazz

Zeste Café, Crombie Halls(See Campus Map location #26) 8pm – 10.30pm - FREE ENTRY Relax this evening with our special live music combination of soulful jazz. Warm your cockles with hot chocolate, play some games, and make some friends whilst you rest your ears and feet. This Jazz Trio is sure to get your feet tapping and your jazzy side on red alert.

If you’ve ever wanted to try out drama, dance, juggling, journalism, singing, or even radio presenting, these are some of the things you can ‘Give it a Go’. Don’t want to turn up and know no-one? Not sure if you want to join a society quite yet? These events are especially catered for first-timers so if you’re worried about being less experienced than others, don’t! Fret ye not!!
