AUSA SOCIETIES HANDBOOK 2009-10

Hello and welcome to the Societies Handbook! • What’s a society? • How do I join? • What sort of societies are there? • What sort of activities do they do? If these are some of the questions on your mind – read on! My name is Johnny Keating and for this year I’ll be your President for Societies and Student Activities. Anything society related, pop and see me, or drop me an email – completely happy to answer anything! A society – well it’s best described in the process. You try out a society, go along to their first event – bit scary, I know, but trust me, there’ll be a bunch of people there just like you – and the people who run the society, or are returning are those lovely smiley people who’ll come up to you with friendly chat!

Welcome

Welcome

You do the activity, this could be dancing, paintballing, acting, reading, writing etc. whatever – through this you’ll meet a ton of people. You go back the following week – you meet more people, more smiley chatty individuals, who this time, may buy you a drink! You go back the following week – and, wait a minute, you’re now one of those lovely smiley chatty people, and (if the student loans come in) you’re offering to buy them a drink! You’ve just made some friends for life! Ok – so it’s not all about meeting those lovely smiley chatty people – but that’s a big part of it! You also learn a ton of new skills, have the opportunity to enter competitions, write a book, act in a play, direct a play, sing, dance, learn a language, learn about a new culture, join the bone marrow register, learn first aid, change the world – heck even see the world – we have societies sending people to Tanzania, Nepal, Romania, Paris, Poland! Have you seen your CV lately? Is it looking a little sparse? Is it a blank page with your name at the top? By joining one society, you’ll be able to write a novel by the end of your time here – now think if you joined 10 societies! That’s 10 novels – who wouldn’t want to employ a novelist? Or at least someone who can write and talk loads about their experiences at University, without it starting with ‘I once studied this course...’ At the end of the day – there are hundreds of thousands of people leaving University, all with the same qualification you have – join a society, have fun,

make new friends, live life to the fullest – and I guarantee, by the time you leave – that blank page with your name at the top and your qualifications will be booming with exciting stories, skills and interests you have proven you have – simply by joining a society! This handbook gives an introduction and the contact details for the majority of our societies. But societies are setting up all the time so to keep up-to-date check out the website below for more info. As you will see the societies are divided up into groups dependent on their style of activity, these are: Departmental Cultural and Faith Create Change Creative Arts General Interest

each based on a particular subject celebrate a particular world culture or faith dedicated to environmental or political concerns societies who like to perform or create art societies of a particular interest or hobby

How could you not join a society? Still not convinced? Pop and see me – we’ll have a cuppa (or a pint)!

In terms of biodiversity and conservation forests provide habitat for many species worldwide. Forestry has vital importance to our world, an importance that is set only to intensify in the future. The Law Mooting Society is the platform for any budding advocates to come and practice their legal debating skills in a courtroom setting. We organise 2 main faculty competitions throughout the year – one for 1st year beginner mooters and the other for more advanced mooters. This is the perfect opportunity for law students to hone their legal argumentation and research skills. For those of you who are not familiar with the concept of mooting or haven’t managed to get involved, this year we will run mooting tutorials to give you the basic skills to get started. In addition to the faculty moots, we also organise external moots for those interested in taking their mooting skills to the next level! On the social side, we hold a ceilidh in the winter which proves to be a very popular event before the Christmas holidays. After the winter exams we organise a trip to London, to give students a chance to experience life in an International Law Firm and to visit Westminster. There’s also the added benefit of being in London after exams…!

Teaching takes place during the month of July, for either two weeks or a month. The ages and abilities of the children vary, as do the towns of cities in which the schools are placed. The Student Wildlife Association of Grampian (SWAG) aims to provide Aberdeen University students an opportunity to gain and develop skills with a practical ‘hands-on’ experience in the humane trapping, handling and identification techniques used in biological studies of small vertebrates. These are held within the University of Aberdeen, Grampian region and other parts of Scotland. Work may also include field sign, tracking (including radiotracking) and scat analysis of mammals and birds. This is achieved by workshops and seminars/lectures and demonstrations presented by individuals experienced in these techniques. Field work or residential trips where members of SWAG can participate and gain experience.
