“Homeowners can make very easy changes to their irrigation system and easily save 25%, without removing lawn or changing plantings, so my best advice is to focus on updating the technology people use to water their landscape, as well as helping them understand how to correctly set their irrigation controllers so they are not putting down wasteful amounts of water. Most cities even offer rebates for money spent to do just that to homeowners. - Keith Wilson, Wilson Design Studio, Principal Landscape Architect

“CALIFORNIA’S DROUGHT IN PERSPECTIVE”

via The Dirt

“The industry has been working hard to improve its efficiency, but growing a single almond can still require as much as a gallon of California’s precious water.” (continued) As a design driven company, we are constantly challenged to work within constraints and considerations, forcing us to think critically of how we can create truly innovative spaces. These considerations many times are driven by environmental factors and what nature has given us to work with. An environmental situation that is it at the top of all designers’ minds is the persistent drought that has fallen on the West Coast, particularly in California. Water resources are at all time lows, frankly unheard of since water levels have been recorded, forcing many to rethink how we approach recreational amenities such as ballfields, splashpads and landscapes and how to design sustainable solutions. These are unprecedented times, requiring creativity and forcing us to think outside the box, but these challenges we embrace. We are at the point where it is necessary to reconsider water management within design; and innovation is born from necessity.
