Benefits of Play The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) celebrates every July as National Park and Recreation Month. This year’s motto is Out is In, which promotes getting outside, having an active mindset and improving community. This message serves as a reminder to us all to get out and play and encourages at least sixty minutes of outside play and the health benefits associated with being active outside. Promoting this type of active lifestyle is a step closer in creating healthier communities, especially helping decrease the childhood obesity rate, which has been on a continual climb for many years. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, roughly seventeen percent of children ages two to nineteen years old are obese and an additional fifteen percent are considered overweight. One of the best ways to combat these conditions is actively exploring places like parks and open spaces and engaging in physical play. Not only are there physical benefits to active play, but there are cognitive and social benefits as well that aid children’s growth and development. When kids can interact with stimulating and challenging outdoor environments, they have an opportunity to problemsolve, think critically and engage their senses with the outdoors. Getting outside and being active is good for both one’s mind and body.

While the NRPA’s Out is In campaign serves as a great reminder to spend more time outside, there are already more forward and focused approaches to getting kids active and engaged with outdoor environments due to the health benefits. Some in the medical world are actively taking this approach. Both Dr. Robert Zarr, Unity Health Care in Washington, D.C., and Dr. Nooshin Razani, Children’s Hospital Oakland in Oakland, CA, have started to actively prescribe outdoor activity as a way to combat obesity and to aid in th As a company who advocates outdoor play and th to continuously promote and emulate the power of to our children and to our communities.who advoc community, it is our duty to continuously promote a overall hope is that social movements like “Out is In children to enjoy playing within their communities.

“Obesity: We’re not overeating, we’re under-exercising, study suggests” via LA Times

“The most startling finding in the study is the drop in the amount of exercise Americans do in our free time. The researchers found that from 1988 to 2010, the percentage of adults who reported doing no exercise in their free time grew dramatically from 19% to 52% in women, and from 11% to 43% in men.” (continue)
