Dear Fellow Rotarian, The COVID-19 coronavirus is affecting every aspect of our lives in real time, and this puts Rotarians in an unfamiliar place. As People of Action, we are most comfortable when we are fully engaged in the world – moving freely, meeting openly, and offering helping hands. These are very difficult times for people who, like us, are at our best when we are learning, growing, and serving—together. We are also leaders in our communities, and these times call for leadership. In many ways, this also is our time. We have proven abilities to reach out and collaborate to offer immediate help to people in need at a rapid pace. These are precisely the skills needed all over the world today. The global effort against COVID-19 depends on actions taken in every country. Rotary has the unique ability to help improve those efforts in every community and every country. Using all the technology we have at our disposal, we as Rotarians can continue to reach out and collaborate on big projects with Rotary clubs, Rotaractors, and Interactors. There are a number of examples where Rotary clubs are helping health authorities communicate best practices or provide needed equipment or support that have been shared with our leaders around the world. As Rotary’s president and president-elect, we have been thinking of these issues very seriously in regard to upcoming Rotary events. We know that clubs and districts are seizing the opportunity to become leaders in their communities and are making better use of technology in this time of need. For example, a Rotary e-club in Italy held a live online session about COVID-19 awareness, a Taiwan club worked with companies and a pharmacy association to donate 1,600 bottles of hand sanitizer to the city of Ji-Long, and Rotary clubs in Sri Lanka helped upgrade software and hardware for the health promotion bureau to assist its social messaging. We cannot know quite yet what path this virus will take. We know we can play a role to help ―flatten the curve,‖ reducing the number of cases in the short term to allow our health systems to address this issue. We should be closely following the advice of the WHO and local health authorities. Again, this includes canceling Rotary club events and meetings in the short term to reduce unnecessary interactions that could cause infections. We can put a greater emphasis on the work we do in our communities by helping our less fortunate neighbors cope with the effects of isolation and fear, or by supporting our health authorities to address this situation. We are dealing with this situation in real time. Please visit the rotary.org COVID-19 response page for ongoing updates.
This is an unprecedented challenge for nearly all of us. But it is also an opportunity for Rotarians to find new, meaningful ways to lead individuals and communities to connect and do good in the world. We have never been prouder to be part of an organization that does so much to protect and strengthen our communities, at home and across the globe. Kindest regards, Mark Daniel Maloney, 2019-2020, President, Rotary International Holger Knaack, 2020-21, President, Rotary International

My dear Rotarians The Rotary Year 2019-20 will have its place in history for the COVID reasons. The RI Convention which was scheduled at Honolulu was cancelled and is now being replaced with a Virtual Convention. The last four months of this Rotary year has demonstrated us an alternative as we embark on our mission of Rotary. Going into the history of our club, I hope that we had displayed our earnest in continuing with the time tested and experimenting with tests and time. Thanks to one and all of us, we had a good number of 157 activities to traverse this Rotary Year. We had 4 Family Get Togethers that were well participated. We had our own RDL conducted wonderfully by the new leaders and we added RDBL to our event list. Needless to say it was a smashing success. Another good point is that we got ourselves familiar with the art of online meetings. Our community service started with Khanyadhan and we had a good number of medical and educational aids this year. We were one of the clubs that took the Responsible India programme in a phased manner and received appreciations from the DG as well as the school leadership. Our monthly RODO boosted the traffic control of the city and public image of Rotary. In Vocational Service, we continued with Build Thy Builders, Guruvandanam and Young Master of India. Our Indian Downtowners Confluence was a hallmark event in international service. Being known for our youth service programmes, we had ticked all the boxes of Interact, Rotaract, RYLA and YSE. We had some interesting discussions and directions in club administration and payment collection which should hold us in good stead. We are also making good progress in terms of TRF with global grants and 100% PHF status. I always believe leadership is the art of letting your team express and evolve itself without any apprehension. In that sense, I cannot take credit for the eventful year because it was the spirit of our Rotarians, the leadership and knowledge of our Rotarians that made it all possible. I thank you all for bearing with me patiently and believing in me persistently. Yours in Rotary, Rtn Pon Rathnavel President, 2019-20, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown
My dearmost Downtowners Rotary Greetings At the outset, I should be one of the most happiest persons seeing the sunset of June 19 2020. It would mark 8 years of completion of Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown. Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown has always been a special club for me. As a GSR, seeing the club grow from strength to strength in the past 8 years has been a satisfying experience. Right from your Charter President, Rtn Santhosh to the dynamic Rtn Godwin to the campaigned Rtn Prakash to the daring Rtn Vijayraghavan to the never say die Rtn Naarayanan to the brisk Rtn Sumit to the systematic Rtn Dr Krishnananda, all the club leaders have left an indelible mark in the history of our club. I am happy that Rtn Pon Rathnavel and his team complemented the vibrant history of our club by their share of interesting and innovative projects. I could also see exemplary leadership qualities in Rtn Mohanraj, Rtn Sreenath, Rtn Sathish Kumar, Rtn Vignesh, Rtn Shyam etc which augurs well for the future of our club. These are just observations this year and I am sure all 52 members of the club are proven leaders.
I wish Rtn Sathish & his team to take the club to cloud nine as we enter into our ninth year. Yours in Rotary, Rtn CT Thiagarajan GSR Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown

Summary 157 is a fancy number for Indian cricket. The 157th Indian cricketer to play an ODI for India was one MS Dhoni. The number would assume significance for our club as we completed a total of 157 projects in the Rotary Year 2019-20 82 is a number to remember for Sachin Tendulkar and Indian cricket fans. Who can forget his 82 of 49 balls on that fine day in Auckland when he opened the innings for India and opened a new innings in his career. That’s our score of club service projects this year. Our President and other fervent followers of Tamil Nadu cricket need no reminder that it has been 34 seasons since we won a Ranji Trophy. That also correlates to the number of community service projects we embarked upon this year.
7 has become a special number in cricket. Not for a six of a no ball but for the jersey number of Indian icon MS Dhoni and our women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur. For us the number 7 signifies the vocational service activities which we completed in this year. The die hard Rahul Dravid fans fondly remember him using the jersey number 5 before his marriage. He later changed to 19 after his marriage. Dravid is incidentally the 5th Indian to be inducted in ICC Hall of Fame. 5 is our total for International service this year. Old Timers of cricket regard 29 as a special number. Sir Don Bradman scored 29 centuries. The invincible West Indies hold the record of unbeaten streak of 29 tests. But for us the number 29 is more future than past and signifies our Youth Service activities for the year.

CUSTOMER LOYALTY PROGRAMMES Visuvasam (Loyalty in Tamil) is very hard to come by these days. In today’s fast changing business turning customers into brand loyalists is no easy feat. For one thing, you need a predictable and repeatable strategy for incentivizing customers to buy from you over again. And that’s where customer loyalty programs come in. With the right initiative, you can turn first-time buyers into repeat customers, and keep your brand top of mind. As we go through the 7 most valuable customer loyalty programmes, I think the ideas should also cross over to you in terms of Rotary clubs and attracting new members to club meetings and projects. A customer loyalty program or rewards program is a marketing strategy that rewards loyal customers that frequently engage with a brand. In a similar vein, we need to have structured programmes to reward loyal Rotarians who frequently engage with Rotary. By rewarding recurring engagement, we can increase customer loyalty and ensure continuous growth. The idea behind an effective loyalty program is that the more loyal customers are the more rewards they’ll get. There are different types of rewards programs, and we shall study the six most valuable ones adopted by online purchase stores. 1. The Point Program 2. The Paid Program 3. The Charity Program 4. The Tier Program 5. The Partner Program 6. The Community Program While this article is more concentrated on the online businesses front, I think as Rotarians we cannot miss this being analogous to us in enhancing the loyalty of Rotarians. We leave it to you to build that analogy. 1. The Points Program The points system focuses on the principle that the more you spend, the more points you get in return. Every time a customer makes a purchase, they get a certain amount of points depending on how much they spent. The brand The North Face ensures Customers earn 10 points for every $1 they spend online and in retail stores, and five points for every $1 they spend in their outlets. Then, customers can put these points towards future purchases. 2. The Paid Program Paid programs involve inviting customers to pay a monthly or annual fee to join your VIP member’s club. For this type of loyalty program to be effective, you need to market it to existing customers or frequent buyers. After all, new customers are unlikely to join a rewards program unless you’re a big, recognizable brand. Almost all OTTs have embraced the paid programmes. In their VIP program costs $25 a year, Barnes & Noble offers discounts, free shipping, and other benefits.
3. The Charity Program Not all loyalty programs include discounts. You can also incorporate your business values into a program to build a stronger relationship with your customers. In fact, if you structure a loyalty program around mutual values, customers are more likely to become brand loyalists. The Body Shop has nailed this approach by making animal welfare part of their program. When offering exclusive membership benefits, consider making your company’s value one or more of the benefits. If they’re important to you, they’re likely to resonate with your audience, too. 4. The Tier Program The tier system focuses on levels of loyalty. Put another way, the more loyal your customers are to your brand (read: the more they buy from you), the greater the rewards they’ll receive. Offering tiers in a loyalty program is a great way to engage customers and keep your brand top of mind. Further, tiers play on aspects of gamification where members reach higher levels, the more they ―play.‖ A great example is e.l.f. 5. The Progress Program Progress is a great motivator. The more people believe they are nearer to achieving a goal, the more committed they are to their efforts to achieve that goal. This is known as the endowed progress effect, and it’s an effective psychological trigger you can use in your loyalty program to encourage repeat engagement. A great example of this comes from NIKE who promotes an active lifestyle: The Nike Run Club and the Nike Training Club apps reward users with badges and other rewards every time they reach a new milestone such as finishing your first 5k. 6. The Community Program This is about creating a platform where members can interact with others to share ideas, get inspiration and feedback, and more. This type of program will work for any brand as long as you encourage conversations that are relevant to your brand and products. Sephora has a comprehensive loyalty program (Beauty Insider) that offers many different benefits. Besides using both a point system and a tiered program, Sephora’s loyalty program also gives members exclusive access to a community of like-minded people. In this community, members can connect with each other, find inspiration, sign up for exclusive events, and more. There are many such loyalty programmes out of which we have presented you the most popular six programmes. We sincerely hope that an idea would have crossed your mind on replication of such programmes for members in your club. As much a Rotary club reaches out to members who miss meetings, it should reward members who do not miss meetings.

OUR AGs AND THEIR AEGIS
by Rtn.Vijayraghavan
Our first AG was Rtn.Pa.Mohan Kumar of Rotary Club of Coimbatore Central. He was a man of few words but whatever he spoke was great wisdom. He knew that the club was in its first year and was very measured in his comments and reactions. Our second AG was Rtn.S.Rajasekhar of Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown. A man of ideas and solutions, he helped the President and members to understand Rotary in a bigger and better manner. Our third AG Rtn.Arivudai Nambi was our first GGR as well. He had a better understanding of our club and he worked closely with our club leaders to ensure and enhance our evolution. Our fourth AG Rtn.S.Ramesh Kumar was the Charter President of Rotary Club of Coimbatore Ikons. Both our clubs were chartered on the same day. Rtn Ramesh Kumar could relate to our progress and being a thorough professional helped us sail through the crests and troughs. Our fith AG Rtn Manivannan was a man of clear vision. He made the entire process of coordination look easy and simple. He was well versed in the art of breaking down complex things to simple things and that helped our club complete the year well Our sixth AG, our fifth GGR and our second President – our own Rtn Godwin Maria Visuvasam knew our club better than anyone else. He was always a supporting Past President and becoming AG did not make it any different. He was at home and ensured that we went home. Our seventh AG was the flamboyant Rtn CG Kumar. Having been an Annette, Interactor, Rotaractor and Rotarian, his rich experiences in Rotary helped us immensely. He was also a people’s man and was very easy going with our club leaders and members. Our eigth AG Rtn Mylsamy is a man of perfection. You could never miss a reminder or note of appreciation on completion of a project. He anticipated the queries of the leaders and always had answers and solutions ready. Our ninth AG Rtn Muthukumar is someone who has a great fan following in Downtown. He has very cordial relationship with almost all members of our club. He always brings lot of positivity and energy. We eagerly look forward to work under his leadership.
THE DOWNTOWN AWARDS
by Rtn.E.Mohanraj
Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown has three Vocational Award Recognition programmes. They are GURUVANDANAM, iRISE and YOUNG MASTER OF INDIA. GURUVANDANAM – Our Club’s annual recognition programme for teachers. The programme was initiated in our second year of service which was the 125th birthday of Sri Radhakrishnan. We heralded a programme to recognize 125 teachers jointly with sister clubs of Coimbatore. The programme was well received and it gave us enormous confidence and satisfaction. The programme continued year after year wherein we honour the teachers of a particular institution in their place. We have completed 7 editions of Guruvandanam in 8 years and have had loved the joy of recognizing teachers. The programme is done on the National Teacher’s Day every year. iRISE – iRISE is our club’s annual (erstwhile bi annual) recognition programme for exemplary women. We had started this programme jointly with sister club during Rtn Vijayraghavan’s tenure. We had the programme extended in Rtn.Sumit’s period and Rtn.Dr.Krishnananda’s period. It is normally done during the International Women’s Day. YOUNG MASTER OF INDIA – Our club’s bi annual recognition programme for children who have demonstrated exemplary capabilities. We present this award during GOV or Installation. But if we have a suitable candidate, we can have it during the Youth Services Month too. We have so far recognised Master Aakash Venkat (Memory Prodigy), Master Pranav Ravishankar (Public Speaking Expert) and Master Akaash (Chess Prodigy). Our club had previously conducted Recognition Programme for Doctors on Doctors Day. We are planning to have it once in three years. We are also having a plan to do the same for Engineers on Engineers Day. We are also thinking of having Vocational Awards ceremony during the Vocational Services month for presenting For Sake of Honour, Vocational Excellence and Vocational Service awards to eminent and deserving personalities from different fields every year.
SOCIAL MEDIA FOR ROTARY
by Rtr.Sriram Bharani
This is the age of social media. For a Rotary club, social media presence is no more a luxury. It is slowly becoming a dire need. Any Rotary Club should be having the following social media apart from website, email and snail mail systems. It would be right time for Rotary clubs to have a website and social media policy. Whatsapp Group – It is essential to maintain communication and camaraderie in any club. Most of the clubs have 2 separate groups – one for official notices and one for general exchanges Whatsapp Broadcast Lists – A broadcast list is the best option for sending reminders to members. Now many clubs are interested in having a Whatsapp Business account for their clubs and sending meeting notices and reminders through broadcast lists. Facebook Group – Having a Facebook Group for sending meeting notices and capturing meeting details is losing pace. But it will be a good store house for your event data and feedback as well asommunication. Facebook Groups should be private and exclusive for club members to ensure its success. Facebook Page – All clubs have realised the need to have a Facebook Page as their PR tool. A Facebook page is the best way to expose the activities and achievements of your club. A FB page is now essential for conducting a live programme or hosting party. Instagram Handle – The Millennials or people born after 2000 are more interested in Instagram than Facebook. Instagram is a wonderful place for storing your photos and showcasing them. The stories and easy live options make it more attractive Youtube Channel - The most underrated social media option is Youtube Channels. Clubs need to adopt to creating videos of projects and using Youtube channel to carve a niche among increasingly video bent users. These are the essential tools. Twitter, Pinterest, Spotify, Wakelet and many other tools are available. But these Super Six handles are more than enough to help you communicate within your club and to the world.
