One Muncie Park Muncie, Indiana

Like many other Rust Belt cities, Muncie has suffered from declining prosperity and welfare. We envision a robust Muncie that reverses this trend by building a community upon the three pillars of sustainability: economic prosperity, environmental protection and resource conservation, and social well-being and equity. These three principles mutually reinforce each other and provide a framework for a whole society where the relationships between people, place and capital are local, transparent, and continuous.

Community Center

2

Design Framework The proposal is not just focused on the park, but also creates a circuit or system that supports social well-being and equity, economic prosperity, and environmental protection.

(Draw by group)

3

Pedestrian Street Concept The twelve blocks in downtown serve as circuits that connect the surrounding area, as well as reconnecting people with the ecological living environment.

One Muncie Park is surrounded by many existing and proposed amenities, such as the Proposed Cintas maker-space, proposed Cultural Trail, Cornerstone Center for the Arts, Muncie Civic Theater, and the library. The amenities, combined with proximity to shopping and restaurants makes this site a good candidate for a pedestrian district. Currently the parking lots, the narrow, broken sidewalks, and the low density of businesses and residences are barriers to pedestrian use of the area. Creating Woonerfs and using traffic calming on main streets creates a safe, walkable district. Signage Demarcating the Entrance of a Woonerf.

Mckinley Eco-village Urban Revitalization Project Muncie, Indiana

Eco-village is a community-based revitalization project, which is seeking sustainability in the energy, social development, and economics. Based on the understanding that water security, food security and energy security are critical to sustainable development, and they are inextricably linked, these nexus are integrated into the design to ensure the security of water, food and energy, and to explore a self-sustained system. Additional rooms and opportunities are created for encouraging the entrepreneurship and local based economy, as well as positive social environment and quality of life. • Findhorn Eco-village in Scotland

The proposed residential cluster has more common space, and reduced size lots. The residents can share the management and maintenance of the food gardens and food prossecing workplace. The surface runoff is

collected by the constructed wetland next to the houses, then the cleansed water can contribute to landscaping and household water use. 13

Medora Brick Kilns

Industrial Heritage Restoration Project Medora, Indiana

Started in 1907 and ends in 1992, the brick plant in Medora was once onr of the biggest in the country. After abandoned for 25 years, the community is seeking for design solutions about restoring the plants. Medora’s proud industrial heritage is showcased alongside opportunities to gather and celebrate a renewed identity.

16

17

Fireside Tours In the wake of the economic downturn, illustrated in the 2013 documentary Medora, the community is striving for optimism that the movie leaves wanting. Our class interviewed members of the nonprofit group to get enough information to develop goals that the design should accomplish.

Goals Celebrate Medora’s history and culture

“It’s really the best focal point of Medora, even above the covered bridge, because it has historical value beyond just being travel across. This had workers and history and families dependent on it.”

Tell the story of the Medora brick

“I would like for people to be able to see how the bricks are made, the brick fired in at least one kiln, and be able to walk the grounds and see the brick on the ground. We’re going to have memorabilia and pictures of past.”

Interview with the board member

Interview with the board member

Enhance the local and regional tourism network

“I think we would draw people from almost every state if we got this thing going, maybe even other countries...”

Bolster the sense of community

“We’d like to have a shelter house and use that for picnicking... weddings, birthday parties, family reunions, bluegrass festival, get the pants scared off ofya with the haunted house…”

Restore and preserve the appearance of existing structures

“Each kiln, all these smokestacks, the offi ce building and the mechanic shop should be preserved, because if you preserve these, everything else is pretty much going to fall in place.”

18

19

Brick Structures Adaption

For big events, this cafe serves people the food and drinks they need to keep exploring, learning, and having fun at the plant. It preserves and reinforces part of the kiln structure.

This building is rebuilt using reclaimed bricks and provides a great view to the event lawn while making pottery and fi ring it in a small pottery kiln. Local artisans can reserve space to sell and teach their crafts, with periodic Craft Shows attracting a wide audience.

Outdoor Recreation

The lawn area is designed to accomodate 1,000 people. It provides an active space for local social and cultural events of Outdoor Concerts, Bluegrass festivals, Fourth of July, Octoberfest, Winterfest, and other events.

20

Main Entrance

The grand entry alley welcomes visitors with historic scenes depicted in reclaimed brick sculptures. It is flanked by alleys of ornamental trees and fl owering shrubs.

Main Activity Area

Visitors get information about the activities of the plant and pass through a gift shop at the forefront. Two interpretive train stations and tracks outline the perimeter of the Story of Medora. 21
