About oil separators Material The traps are made from environmentally-friendly polyethylene, suitable for clean and wastewater. Use In accordance with an EU directive, oil traps must be installed at all: • car parking lots; • truck parking lots; • covered parking lots or open areas; • car repair workshops; • petrol stations; • car washes. Separators of light fluids are intended for separating light fluids, as specified in the adopted European standard SIST EN 858-1 part and prEN 858-2 part in Annex A. Operation of the Roto oil separator Rainwater mixed with oil and mud flows from the road surface to the drainage system or directly into the environment. The mud is often contaminated with oil. Roto oil separators are constructed so that they clean water from oil and mud. A tank consisting of two parts is usually used for optimal effect. The first part separates mud from water and the second separates oil from water.

Interior of tanks The following cleaning steps are performed in the mud separator: Water contaminated with oil and mud flows to the tank. Water is evenly distributed in the tank with the special patented Roto's water distribution system. The mud is deposited at the bottom of the tank. When the water reaches the second part of the tank, the mud has already been removed. Oil separates from water in the second part of the tank. Water and oil are then evenly distributed with the patented Roto's water distribution system. Larger oil drops then come to the water surface because of the low density. Smaller drops combine and increase in the filter and then come to the surface. Hence, the companies cleaning wastewater can clean the oil separator. The water coming through the outlet is free of oil.

Oil separators

Selection of the appropriate trap Roto oil separator must be used in combination with the mud separator and sample shaft. Therefore the entire chain consists of: mud separator – oil separator – sample shaft. The EN858-2 standard can also be used to select the correct system. In accordance with the norm, the nominal size is given by the formula:

Ns = (Qr + fx * Qs ) * fd NS = nominal volume in l/s Qr = max. flow of rainwater in l/s Qs = max. flow of wastewater in l/s fx = retention factor, depending on the nature of release (Table I) Fd = density factor for the suitable light fluid (Table I)

Table I Method of use

fx

Industrial wastewater, car washes, petrol stations, cleaning oil contaminated parts etc.

2

Oil contaminated rainwater from impermeable locations: parking lots, roads, industrial yards etc.

0

Retain all releases of light fluids – protect the environment.

Installation The following guidelines should be applied when installing the oil separator: The hole must be roughly 50 cm wider than the tank. Thus, a layer of compressed sand can be formed adjacent to the tank. Make sure that a well-compressed layer is located under the filter blocks. The standard maximum depth of installation is 2.5 m. If the tank is placed lower, the structure of the tank should be strengthened. Make sure no sharp objects damage the tank. Installation instructions for the oil separator in an area with underground water: Because of underground water, the separator must be fixed so that the water does not raise it. A concrete slab is placed at the bottom of the hole, containing anchoring screws. They can be used to fix the tank with polyester strips. We need at least three anchoring strips with capacity of at least 2,500 kg. Fill the entire system with water in order to: • ensure correct operations from the start; • avoid swimming of the tank as in the case of high ground water; • ensure clean sensors of the electronic alarm device.

Accessories Sensors: • oil level measuring device with an alarm; • oil and mud level measuring device with an alarm; • a device for reporting data to a mobile phone.
