BIKE COMPONENTS
ROTOR components have always been the choice of triathletes and of the winners of the most important bike competitions around the world: MTB, Road, Cyclocross, World Championships, le Tour de France, Ironman and even the Olympic Games. ROTOR products are not only designed for professional cyclists and triathletes, but also for all levels of athletes, who, in their own level, look for maximum performance and ways to avoid injuries.

It has been almost 20 years since the first prototype of the ROTOR SYSTEM was developed
The Road to Success ROTOR Bike Components was Pablo Carrasco’s concept. Carrasco is an Aeronautical Engineer, born in Málaga, Spain, and is responsible for innovations and ideas for Rotor products that would be an upgrade to those on the market at the time. On one of his rides, he came up with what would later become the best solution to the biomechanical problems of the dead centers in pedaling. Every bicycle needs two wheels and ROTOR was born when Ignacio Estellés (Marketing and PR expert with a degree in Law) joined Pablo, completing the missing link. The restless, privileged and innovative mind of Pablo, met the energy and driving force of Ignacio. Together they convinced the press, investors and elite athletes of the possibilities and benefits of the original system.

It has been almost 20 years since the ROTOR SYSTEM was developed at the Aeronautical Engineering School of Madrid, where Pablo designed the first prototypes as a student. Making contact with Enrique del Rey, at the time a professional Enduro rider and founder of a motorbike and bicycle components factory, was key. His CNC machinery and skill could finally turn Pablo’s ideas into real world products.
Although the ROTOR SYSTEM was commercialized and used successfully by cyclists and triathletes, in 2005 ROTOR decided to go against the grain and produce oval chainrings. The biomechanical effects of the Q-Rings were what Pablo Carrasco was looking to achieve, but without the complexity and weight of the ROTOR SYSTEM. This is how Rotor’s Q-Rings, which are compatible with almost every crankset in the market, were born. The Q-Ring’s success in competition, especially Carlos Sastre’s victory in the 2008 Tour de France, has been the best advertising for ROTOR components.
The dream two childhood friends had finally came true with the creation of ROTOR. From there, the brand has continued to grow and develop in terms of portfolio and product line as well as in facilities and personnel. ROTOR’s staff is well known for their great love of cycling and triathlon. They test the products themselves and contribute their perspective from the everyday rider. They reflect optimism and remind the company to aim for excellence year after year.

-Why did you choose QXL chainrings and what are the benefits for you? The science indicates there’s an advantage, a UCI legal one too, and that’s why I persevered when it first felt strange to be pedaling an oval. Now that I’m accustomed to it, I no longer feel any difference. They give me the edge with better pedaling efficiency, less fatigue and extra power in all occasions.
-How did you get started with Rotor Q-Rings? Being an ambitious athlete and sports scientist, I am always looking for ways to improve my performance. One day, a long time dealer friend, Fritz Buchstaller from Germany told me about Rotor Q-Rings and had me try them. They felt natural in no time.
-What are your personal tips to anyone who wants to try Rotor QXL rings? Don’t just buy the rings, buy into the concept. It will take a while to become accustomed to them but once you have, there’s a possibility it will give you an advantage, silly not to try really! -When did you get started with the QXL rings? Rotor delivered the QXL to me after the TdF 2012. I’ve been using them ever since on my Cervelo road and TT bikes. My OCP position is 2 and I choose to mount them on the Flow cranks.

-And success did not take long to come... In May 2011, I won IronMan Lanzarote on Q-Rings, setting the course record. I got off the bike with fresh feeling legs and they helped me pass the only person to get off the bike before me. It’s a big advantage to start the run split fresher. -What tips do you have for anyone who wants to get started with Q-Rings? Do one legged pedal drills. Be patient, even if they feel strange. You will feel great in no time. I ride in OCP3 and feel stronger both seated and standing.

-When did you first try Q-Rings? At the Roc d’Azur (France) in 2008. I am always open to something new, so I raced on them the next day. Immediately I had great results and felt comfortable. My OCP is 3, which makes me confortable both sitting and standing up.
-Are you happy with the team’s choice to use Q-Rings? Of course, you just have to see the results. The whole team has adapted perfectly and are performing well. No one has suffered any pain or odd sensations. Even I installed them on my bike and notice a difference!
-What tips do you have for anyone who wants to get started with Rotor products? I’d advise them to wait several days to draw any conclusions, even though I was okay from day one. If they want to adjust their OCP, be patient, don’t change your position every day.
-Did you need to adjust the OCP? We had every cyclist use OCP3 to start with. Then, during one of the training camps, one of the ROTOR technicians made some tests and adjusted their OCP according to each athlete’s individual pedaling.
-How was the QX1 prototype? Winning the 2013 UCI Marathon World Championship says it all. I love simple systems which are super light, reliable and give me more power. I really feel the difference on races of 100km.
-All of the young athletes are very talented, everyone is expecting that many of them will become professionals. I hope so. But, before that, they have to go through Sub23 category, for which we are gathering a team for 2014. That’s why they’ll continue to use Q-Rings.

Why
Q-RINGS? Throughout ROTOR history, many professional cyclists and triathletes have chosen Q-Rings. Their victories, like Gold at the Olympics, the Tour de France, over twenty five Ironman races and more than twenty MTB, Road, TT and CX World Championship titles speak for themselves. Biomechanical research indicates that with Q-Rings, the effort is translated into better performance and pedaling efficiency. Q-Rings benefit most from pedaling’s strongest muscles and compensate for the inefficient dead center areas. In scientific 1 km time trial studies, Q-Rings gave a 1.6 second advantage compared to round rings.
Oval rings for increased performance
DURING SUBMAXIMAL TESTING FOLLOWED BY 1KM TIME TRIALS, IT WAS DEMONSTRATED THAT Q-RINGS COULD LOWER YOUR HEART RATE AND OXYGEN CONSUMPTION, AND GIVE YOU AN ADVANTAGE OF 1.6 SECONDS WHEN COMPARED TO ROUND RINGS.

The OCP allows one to vary the angle that a Q-Ring offers its greatest resistance, adjusting it to the moment when the athlete delivers their maximum power. The OCP ring allows up to 20 degrees of angular variation between the finely stepped first and last adjustment points, all to optimize each individual’s downstroke. Switching from round rings to Q-Rings is very easy and even though it requires a short transition period, you will start seeing benefits right away. Muscles need to adapt to the new, more efficient way of pedaling. It is a hardly noticeable process that happens naturally, with no sudden changes. The athlete will start feeling comfortable with Q-Rings progressively. Without giving it any thought, you are applying your power in a more efficient manner. At the same time, you are protecting your knees from possible injuries by reducing the stress on your knees in the dead spots.

Road Q-Rings and QXL have 5 OCP regulation points. MTB have 3 OCP regulation points. The Micro Adjust Spider (or MAS, available for 3D+ and standard on Flow cranks and the ROTOR POWER) doubles this number of OCP points. MAS reduces the angle between OCP points to about 2.5 degrees. Personal adjustment is a process worth the time. The exact position is not determined by your height or weight but by your individual pedaling style and your muscle distribution.
Before you switch to the next point, it’s best to ensure that you have ridden at least 10 hours on the previous one. With a shorter test period you might still feel uncomfortable, even if you were in the process of adapting perfectly.
GO DOWN ONE OCP POSITION (i.e. 3-2) IF
Starting at the intermediate point, #3, once having passed the adaptation stages, the appearance of certain symptoms makes it advisable to switch the OCP. When you do this, only change your OCP point up or down one number at a time.

The UBB is a concept that encompasses and works with ALL BB standards, forever eliminating complicated BB/Crank compatibility problems. It allows installation of almost any 30 or 24mm axle crank from ROTOR on the bike you have, regardless of its BB standard.
“MAS” stands for Micro Adjust Spider and means “More” in Spanish. That is what this technology is all about: More adjustability for a further optimized Q-Ring setup. Thanks to its secondary bolt holes, Q-Ring users can regulate their Q’s with twice the accuracy of standard cranks.
ROTOR’s Twin Leg Concept gives the stiffest possible crankset by balancing the cranks’ left-to-right rigidity. There is no point in making an ultra-rigid right crank arm if the left crank arm can’t match it. By designing the crankset as a “real set”, not just two individual arms, TLC creates the most balanced crankset possible.
ROTOR’s CNC crank arms are stiffer than the competitions forged products due to our Trinity Drilling System. This process drills three full-depth holes from axle to pedal, leaving behind a box-trellised structure similar to bridges. This gives our crank arms superior rigidity and an exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio.

MADE IN SPAIN ROTOR components are built to fulfill the needs of athletes and more importantly set new trends in the Market. ROTOR develops innovative technological improvements that later become real products. Prototypes are designed and produced, patents are registered and products are manufactured, all at ROTOR’s own Madrid facilities. Production is done using proprietary CNC and cold forging techniques unique to ROTOR. From beginning to end, the Quality Department strictly controls all the steps of manufacturing. Useful recommendations Tips for your first Q-Ring set We recommend using a set of Q-Rings with the same number of teeth as the round rings you are using now.

What is the OCP system? Optimum Chainring Position. Q-Rings are designed to be adjusted, depending on the pedaling stroke of each individual cyclist. This ensures the maximum diameter always coincides with your maximum power, regardless of pedaling style, bike geometry or muscle build, and guaranteeing full benefit from the Q-Ring’s performance-boosting ovality.

I don´t feel comfortable in OCP position 3, which one should I choose? Please see the Adaptation and setup document included in your Q-Ring package for instructions on OCP optimization and adaptation (also available on rotorbike.com). Once you have fully adapted, if you feel resistance is coming too early, switch to a OCP number one step higher (3 to 4 ), if you feel resistance coming too late, change to a OCP number one step lower (3 to 2).
