ROTTERDAM CELEBRATES THE CITY! Rotterdam is flourishing like never before. Seeing the vibrant port city with its contemporary architecture, it is hard to imagine that the city centre was destroyed during the World War II. Ever since, Rotterdam has been working hard to create the metropolis it has become today. In 2015/2016, looking back on 75 years of reconstructing, the city is celebrating and looks ahead to the future. The city on the river Maas is becoming increasingly popular. Thanks to brand new buildings such as The Market Hall, De Rotterdam and Rotterdam Central Station, Rotterdam has gained more and more international fame. Against the backdrop of these architectural icons, Rotterdam celebrates the city! now focuses on the citizens of Rotterdam and its urban culture. The event is all about storytelling. The stories of all residents provide the starting point for many months of cultural programmes open to a wide range of visitors both from home and abroad. Rotterdam celebrates the city! tells 75 personal stories from people that symbolize the city’s past, present and future. One of the 75 Rotterdammers is Darrel Ronald, who moved to Rotterdam in 2005 from Canada to build an international career as an architect. _ See www.rotterdamcelebratesthecity.com for more stories.

until sun 31 july 2016 Interview Karin Koolen
“In my profession, Rotterdam is the place to be” Architect and urban designer Darrel Ronald (1977) was born and educated in Canada, but he dreamt of an international career. He arrived in Rotterdam as an expat in 2005. “I worked for Maxwan architects + urbanists in Rotterdam from 2005 to 2007. After that, I went back to Canada to set up my own office, but in 2011 I returned to Rotterdam. Partly because of love, partly because of professional reasons. I enjoy designing in dynamic fast-growing cities around the world. Where better to do it than from Rotterdam? I am now working as a Project Leader at KCAP Architects&Planners. When I left in 2007, there was only the Urban Espresso Bar; and now the city is full of fantastic coffee! (laughs) In our profession, Rotterdam is the place to be. The city is internationally-oriented, progressive, open-minded and in close contact with upcoming economies in Asia and Africa. If you work with the same company in the Rotterdam architecture and design scene for five years, you can have hundreds of contacts all over the world! Rotterdammers (the people of Rotterdam) are straightforward, open and honest. I think it’s good. Knowing where you stand
and what you are supposed to do: that’s how you make things happen. When people here believe in your potential, you jump straight into the deep end, whether you have been working for many years or only a few months after graduating. Without having studied here myself, I definitely think and work as a Dutch designer. After the 1940 bombing, the city council decided to tear down the entire city centre. Even the buildings that were still in good shape. This may seem a shame, but it has given Rotterdam the opportunity to create something special and to work with new forms of architecture. Take a look at the high-rise buildings, for example, or the Markthal and the new Central Railway Station. You can see the city, after years of reconstruction and experimentation, becoming whole again. My son is now 1 year old and my wife and I are getting to know the city of Rotterdam in a different way: healthcare and childcare. We do not know what the future will bring, but right now we don’t have any plans to leave Rotterdam!” _ 7

FESTIVAL GUIDE 2016
WED 27 JAN – SUN 7 FEB 2016 Interview and photos Dimitri Hakke
At the end of January 2016, Rotterdam will again turn into a dazzling city of film for 12 days. With a highly diverse film programme, a substantial festival audience (302,000 visitors in 2015) and over 2,000 national and international film professionals, International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has become one of the city’s most important cultural events. It has grown over the last 44 editions to become one of the leading film festivals in Europe. This year, Bero Beyer (46) is at the helm for the first time as IFFR director.
“My view of the world, and the way in which I deal with other people, is largely formed by the films I have seen.” Bero Beyer is a familiar face in the film world as he has been involved in the production of various films such as Paradise Now, Rana’s Wedding and Atlantic. He has recently worked as a film consultant for the Netherlands Film Fund, focusing on art house films and international co-productions. Beyer explains his philosophy: “I want to be surprised when I watch a film. Cinema is a window on the world through which someone tells you a story in images. You are drawn into an experience that you have never had before. My view of the world, and the way in which I deal with other people, is largely formed by the films I have seen. Film affects us as much as it does because a film experience is such an emotional experience. This is because a good film breaks down the wall; there is a suspension of disbelief. You are drawn into the film, and the experience enriches your life. So, it certainly does no harm to watch a good film now and again! It’s no punishment – not like doing your homework or eating raw vegetables.”
BERO BEYER
Festival Director IFFR
What is so special about IFFR is that it is a festival for film professionals and enthusiasts. “It is great that these two worlds come together in Rotterdam. The best audience in the world – not my words, that’s what I hear from film makers – is brought together here with a great festival for film makers, producers, >> 11
>> screenwriters, sales agents and distributors, who discuss films and make their plans. The result is creativity. Many film projects are born in Rotterdam, and you can really feel that. That was what I noticed when I first came here at the age of 19 – the stimulating environment, full of energy. There’s always something brewing here, which is why I joined the team. While friends were attendants, I decided to be a shuttle bus driver. I didn’t get to see so many films, but I was closer to the heart of the festival and saw how things worked behind the scenes. I would have to go and collect someone from Schiphol Airport, but I also saw the films being played on the reels. I was part of a network. The combined energy of all those people working towards the same goal – it’s fantastic to see!”
“You do not just watch a film, but as a visitor you can discuss the film afterwards with the director.” With a huge choice of 250 feature films, it can be hard for visitors to find the right one. Beyer: “There is no point in just lumping them all together and leaving people to work it out for themselves. You need to give some clear advice. There is an ocean of films to choose from, and it can be refreshing to dive in, but you will drown if you can’t find your way out again. It is important that we show people why we have included a particular film, why we find it so special. It’s good to make a distinction – there is mediocrity enough! There is also the opportunity to talk about that, after all, you don’t just watch a film, but as a visitor you can discuss the film afterwards with the director.” In contrast to some other festivals, IFFR focuses not on the glitter and glamour and red carpet premieres with big stars, but on the films. Beyer: “The question is whether inviting the big stars is the best way to do it. After all, the only reason for doing that is to get into the glossies. Of course, if it’s a good film and there are some ‘well-known’ names in it, it’s great to have them. However, I would rather have a good film with no stars than a bad film with the stars. IFFR must be careful not to get caught up in the world premiere craziness, which just becomes an ‘arms race’ that does no-one any good – not us, not the audience, and certainly not the films. We need to be smarter, focus more on the films themselves, so that people want to come to Rotterdam. Financially, we will never beat Cannes, but we should be proud of what IFFR can do. Films are released in Cannes that we have been involved in, one way or another. Should we be upset about that? Of course not, it makes me incredibly proud!” _ 12

The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) presents its seventh edition: IABR–2016–THE NEXT ECONOMY–. The IABR– will once again focus on the future of our cities. The exhibition shows projects that open up perspectives of the city we want: a green city, a communal city, a productive city – a city in which the public space once again occupies center stage. With Maarten Hajer as chief curator, IABR–2016–THE NEXT ECONOMY– will turn former warehouse Fenixloods II in the Katendrecht district in Rotterdam into a “Workroom for The Next Economy” during a 12-week transformation. An auditorium and workspaces are embedded in the exhibition space, offering opportunities for a rich program of events: debate, reflection, exchange, conferences, meetings and co-creation. Exhibition visitors can proactively involve themselves in the debate on issues such as: How to relate urban design to the economy of the future? How can the city of the future be both sustainable and socially inclusive, while remaining a platform for the production of the wellbeing of all of us? The exhibition starts April 22 and ends July 10. www.iabr.nl/en
