This ski area perfectly combines with the Trento-Malè-Mezzana railway, creating a truly unique, convenient and efficient “road-railway-lift” transportation system. ROBERTO’S FEELING FOR SNOW It was interesting to meet Roberto last winter, who introduced me to his world. Roberto makes sure all winter long that the ski slopes are in perfect condition.

met him early one morning as I headed out towards the mountain summit with my touring skis. Of course I wasn’t alone. A certified mountain guide, Gianfranco, joined me on this fantastic but strenuous tour. Roberto had already done his work there. Roberto is a snow groomer driver and every night throughout the winter he drives up and down the mountain from Folgarida and Marilleva until the slopes are smooth and flawless, ready for the gondolas and ski lifts to start up again every morning. And there are quite a

few – 97 to be exact. A total of 270 km of slopes have to be prepared, day in day out, no matter what the weather. Wind and weather make no difference to Roberto, since he is driving a really high-tech machine, a snow-cat with over 500 horsepower and an amazing number of switches and buttons in the cockpit that all need to be operated at the right time. His cat has so many lights on it, that at night it looks like a little spaceship. ROBERTOS GEFÜHL FÜR SCHNEE Echt spannend war es letzten Winter, als ich Roberto kennenlernte. Roberto, der hier den ganzen Winter dafür sorgt, dass die Skipisten in perfektem Zustand sind, zeigte mir seine Welt.

as erste Mal begegnet bin ich ihm, als ich schon früh am Morgen mit meinen Tourenskiern Richtung Gipfel unterwegs war. Natürlich nicht alleine. Gianfranco, ein ausgebildeter Alpin-Guide, unternahm mit mir diese tolle aber auch anstrengende Runde. Roberto hatte da schon seine Arbeit getan. Er ist Pistenraupenfahrer und fährt jede Nacht, den ganzen Winter lang, den Berg zwischen Folgarida und Marilleva rauf und runter. Erst wenn die Pisten am Morgen alle gleichmäßig und ohne Makel bereitstehen, beginnen

die Umlaufbahnen und Skilifte ihre Runden zu drehen. Und das sind einige – 97 um genau zu sein. Insgesamt müssen jeden Tag 270 Pistenkilometer präpariert werden – und das bei jeder Witterung. Zugegeben, Wind und Wetter machen Roberto nichts aus, denn er fährt ein wahrliches Hightech-Gerät: Eine Schneekatze mit über 500 Pferdestärken, mit einer Unmenge an Schaltern und Drückern, die es in seinem Cockpit zur rechten Zeit zu betätigen gilt. In some nights so much snow can fall that you would think that “Sun Valley” (Val di Sole) had turned into “Snow Valley”.

gets exciting. Powdery snow flies into the air and the powerful crawlers dig deep into the hard snow mantle, which is then reshaped and rolled. There is always a new challenge. If there is too little snow on the ground, then the snow cannons spring to life and produce over 100 cubic metres an hour of the finest artificial snow, which then has immediately to be perfectly positioned. And if new snow falls, then he and his colleagues really have to go to it, since on some nights so much snow can fall that you would think that Sun Valley (Val di Sole) had turned into Snow Valley. His work is always exciting and it’s great fun to watch. Roberto secretly promised me that – if I managed to get out of

bed early enough – I could ride along with him some time. This would be a top secret mission, of course! Roberto and Tom – two daredevils at the heart of Val di Sole’s white winter world, from Pejo to Passo Tonale and on to Folgarida Marilleva. That is if I ever manage to tear myself away from my soft feather bed, which is at least as cosy and comfortable as ours at home. The first year, me, my wife Emily and my two little rockstars, Will and Lucy, stayed in a modern four-star spa hotel with all the mod cons – a one-off that we’d love to do again some time! The second year we decided on a cosy little bed and breakfast – homely, family-run and a place that felt like we were staying with friends. Last year we stayed on a farm. Lichter leuchten da. Sobald er loslegt und die geballte Kraft dieser Riesenkatze in Aktion tritt, wird’s spannend. Der Schnee staubt auf, und die gewaltigen Raupen graben sich tief in die harte Schneedecke, die jetzt neu geformt und gewalzt wird.

Aufregend ist seine Arbeit allemal, und es macht richtig Spaß ihm dabei zuzusehen. So ganz unter uns hat mir Roberto versprochen, dass ich einmal mit ihm mitfahren dürfte. Natürlich in streng geheimer Mission. Und vorausgesetzt, dass ich es früh genug aus meinen kuscheligen Federn schaffe!

Jede Nacht warten neue Herausforderungen: Liegt zu wenig Schnee, springen die Schneekanonen an und produzieren pro Stunde über 100 Kubikmeter feinsten Kunstschnee, der dann auch sofort perfekt angefahren werden muss. Sobald Neuschnee fällt, müssen Roberto und seine Kollegen erst recht ran, denn in manchen Nächten fällt so viel Schnee, dass man das „Val di Sole“ (zu Deutsch: Sonnental) glatt in „Val di Neve“ (Schneetal) umbenennen könnte.

animals to pet, and the chance to join in with the work and help out. For our kids that was really the best thing alongside the downhill skiing, tobogganing, skating and cross-country skiing. What really makes me wonder is how they - the Solandri, as the valley folk are fondly known here in the north-western part of Trentino – manage to make sure that all of the feather beds in the different hotels and apartments are always just as soft, fresh-smelling and cosy. I know I’ll find out some day! And that they can tell what you want without even asking – well you get that in fairytales – but you wouldn’t think it was possible in real life. I’d say give it a try for yourself and have a holiday in Val di Sole, the place where fairytales come true. We tell our children stories, and sometimes our friends, when they are not made up. Just like Roberto told me about the fantastic après-ski parties up here on the mountain. No doubt these are great for a couple, or with friends, but for parents? Well yes!

eine einmalige Erfahrung, die es allemal zu wiederholen gilt! Im zweiten Jahr entschieden wir uns für eine gemütliche Frühstückspension – familiär und heimelig, als würde man bei guten Freunden wohnen. Im letzten Jahr machten wir Urlaub am Bauernhof. Echt gut: eigene Produkte, Tiere zum Anfassen und die Möglichkeit mitzuhelfen. Für unsere Kinder war es wirklich das tollste Alternativ-Angebot neben Skifahren, Rodeln, Schlittschuhlaufen und Langlaufen. Was mich wirklich zum Grübeln bringt, ist, wie sie es wohl schaffen, die „Solandrer“ – so werden die Talbewohner hier im nordwestlichen Teil des Trentino liebevoll genannt – dass all die Federbetten in den verschiedenen Betrieben immer gleich weich, frisch duftend und kuschelig sind. Aber das werde ich noch herausfinden! Dass einem jeder Wunsch von den Lippen abgelesen wird, das gibt es eigentlich nur im Märchen, aber nicht im wahren Leben, möchte man meinen. Ich würde sagen, probiert es am besten selbst aus und macht Urlaub im Märchenland Val di Sole.

Märchen erzählt man Kindern und manchmal auch seinen Freunden, wenn sie nicht erfunden sind. So erzählte mir Roberto von den tollen und coolen Après-Ski-Partys hier oben am Berg. Zu zweit oder mit Freunden gewiss eine tolle Sache, aber für Eltern? Aber sicher doch! In der zauberhaften Kinderwelt sind die lieben Kleinen für ein paar Stunden optimal versorgt und vergnügen sich mit Gleichaltrigen aus allen Herren Länder unter der professionellen Aufsicht von geschulten und geprüften Pädagogen. Nun, Roberto hat mir ja einiges von hier erzählt, aber so richtig kann man sich das Ganze erst vorstellen, wenn man selbst hier war. THE NEW LIFT The almost 500-metre-climb from Passo Paradiso (2.585 m) to Passo Presena (3.000 m) can now be achieved in comfort with the modern 8-seater gondola that has replaced the Paradiso-Presena chairlift and two ski lifts, Presena destra and Presena sinistra. Approximately half-way up, at 2.724 m, is the mid-station, where once the Capanna Presena stood. In the coming winter season the former ski chalet will be rebuilt to house 8 guest rooms each with their own bathroom. Furthermore, for the next season, the plan is to build a snack station at 3.000 m, from which in addition to snacks, visitors will be able to enjoy the fabulous views of the Adamello, Pian di Neve, Lobbie, Mandrone and Presanella mountains. The new gondola travels at 7.5 km/h and takes just 13 minutes to carry skiers from Passo Tonale up to the summit of the glacier. From Ponte di Legno the travel time is 27 minutes (Pontedilegno-Tonale, Paradiso and Presena gondolas).

DIE NEUE BAHN

Die knapp 500 Höhenmeter vom Passo Paradiso (2.585 m) zum Passo Presena (3.000 m) lassen sich nun bequem mit der modernen 8er Kabinenbahn überwinden, die den Sessellift Paradiso-Presena und die zwei Skilifte Presena destra und Presena sinistra ersetzt. Auf etwa halber Strecke, auf 2.724 m Höhe, erreicht man die Mittelstation, dort wo einst die Capanna Presena stand. In der kommenden Wintersaison wird die ehemalige Skihütte neu erbaut und 8 Gästezimmer mit eigenem Bad beherbergen. Für die nächste Saison ist weiters die Errichtung einer Jausenstation auf 3.000 m Höhe geplant, in der sich neben einem Snack auch der Traumblick auf die Berge von Adamello, Pian di Neve, Lobbie, Mandrone und Presanella genießen lässt. Die neue Kabinenbahn fährt mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 7,5 km/h und bringt die Skifahrer in nur 13 Minuten vom Passo Tonale hinauf auf den Gipfel des Gletschers. Von Ponte di Legno aus beträgt die Fahrtzeit 27 Minuten (Kabinenbahnen Pontedilegno Tonale, Paradiso und Presena).

From Passo Presena a lovely red run sweeps down to Passo Paradiso. From the mid-station it is possible to switch to a blue run. There are also plans to construct a cross-country skiing track which should offer winter sports fans an alternative in autumn and spring when the tracks in Tonale, Vermiglio and Ponte di Legno no longer have sufficient snow cover.

Vom Passo Presena führt eine schöne rote Piste hinunter zum Passo Paradiso. Ab der Mittelstation besteht die Möglichkeit auf eine blaue Piste zu wechseln. Geplant ist auch die Errichtung einer Langlaufpiste, die Wintersportlern im Herbst und Frühjahr als Alternative dienen soll, wenn die Loipen in Tonale, Vermiglio und Ponte di Legno nicht mehr ausreichend beschneit sind.

NEW “SARODEN” CHAIRLIFT The new four-seater “Saroden” chairlift will begin operating before Christmas 2016. The new lift covers approx. 1 km and carries skiers from 2.183 m up to the “Filon dei Omeni” mountain ridge at 2.500 m. Two new red runs begin here: the “Saroden” slope, which is approx. 1 km long and features a descent of over 300 m and an average gradient of 27%, and the “Beverina”, which is 650 m long, descends 150 m and has an average gradient of 23%. At the same time, the new Pejo Snow Park, which covers a total area of 9,000 m2 will also be opening. Enjoy!

ll dishes are closely linked with fragrant hay, coupled with fresh mountain herbs and wild berries, and are deeply bonded with the region and the treasures it has to offer. Cheese is an essential ingredient in traditional cuisine. Casolét, for example, a delicious local cheese, which has been awarded the renowned Slow Food certification, is available in Val di Sole from local cheese producers and the two major cheese dairies in the valley. Cold meats such as smoked bacon or “Luganega”, a pork sausage, are amongst the typical products which are still made by hand in many places in Val di Sole. Berries, mountain honey and aromatic herbs which infuse the simple, healthful and tasty regional dishes with flavour are also an integral part of Val di Sole cuisine.
