Corone
The Kronplatz-Plan de Corones is located between Valdaora-Olang, Brunico-Bruneck, and the Val Badia-Gadertal. And with the opening of the MMM Corones, it has proven itself to be more than just hype for skiers, cyclists, and hikers. The mountain with the greatest panorama in all of South Tyrol-Südtirol, with a view from the Zillertal in the north to the Marmolada in the south and from the Adamello in the west to the Lienz Dolomites in the east, has become the acme of mountains and culture. The story culminates in traditional mountaineering. While other destinations may provide a boost, at the Kronplatz we go into depth with the mountain experience: with a museum structure. That is the reason for the subterranean museum with the soft forms, designed by star architect Zaha Hadid, at the edge of the plateau, where there is an unobstructed view of the landscape of the Dolomites: of the peaks of the Sass Putia-Peitlerkofer and the Odle-Geisler range, where I learned traditional mountain climbing; of the Sasso di Santa Croce-Heiligkreuzkofel and the Marmolada, where I was successful with my most difficult first ascents; of the Central Alps, where in the combined terrain (rock and ice) I would turn into the one who could test the limits of new paths for traditional mountaineering in the Caucasus, the Andes, and the Himalayas. The reflection of the world outside with the content – mountains in image and in philosophy, plus the development and history. With the highly modern cableways at the Kronplatz, people are brought to the mountains, and on the summit, I bring the mountains to the people. The mountains of the world, their majesty, and the stories of their conquest. The summit plateau at the Kronplatz thus receives a fourth dimension, and in addition to images of a unique landscape and amazing descents – by ski, mountain bike, or paraglider – guests receive the possibility for tranquillity, deceleration, and added depth. And quiet! Skiing used to be a discipline of traditional mountaineering. Today, it is a part of the offering of every winter tourism destination in the mountains that is blessed with sufficient snow, such as the Kronplatz. The ski runs on the eastern, southern, and northern slopes with fantastic descents offer a selection that is so vast that it can hardly be found anywhere else. The wavy lines in the MMM Corones, with the possibility to go into depth with traditional mountaineering, do not exist anywhere else in the world. Starting in July 2015, we will look forward to seeing you at the Corones inside the mountain – the crown of my museum work.

like a sponge – up to two hundred litres can be stored for every square meter (nearly five gallons per square foot). The reason for this? The organisms that live in the soil and the roots of the trees, shrubs, and herbs that penetrate the earth create an extensively branching hollow space system. As a result of this, the rain can be quickly channelled from the surface to the depths. The roots
In order to grow, trees need carbon, which they get from the carbon dioxide in the air. As a result of the plant metabolism, photosynthesis, oxygen is released. A twenty meter (sixty-six foot) spruce creates around 21,000 litres of oxygen per day – that is approximately as much as thirty-five people need daily.

12 | Kronplatz Summer | The Language of the Forest
The forest is similar to a large family in which young and old live side by side. Ranger Burger recognizes how old a tree is by the “skin and hair.” The skin of the trees is the bark. In their younger years, it is smooth, and with older specimens it is rough and cracked. The treetop is similar to what’s on the head of people: with time, it becomes lighter. A tree is fully grown after 150 to 200 years. While in the first half of its life, it shoots up in height, in the second half it takes on breadth. The trees are preferably cut in the wintertime when the wood is no longer in “sap flow” and dries out faster. Wood from the Pustertal-Val Pusteria is very much sought after. It is dense, stable, and has a pretty appearance. Because the trees grow slowly in the mountains, the annular rings are close together. In addition, a healing effect is ascribed to spruce and stone pine wood. Austrian scientists have determined that anyone who furnishes their office or bedroom with it can work with particularly good concentration and sleep peacefully because the heart rate drops and the breathing becomes deeper. And thus the forest also tells something about people: it tells of the trend to build houses and furniture out of wood or to generate cosy heat with wood chip systems. Forest rangers such as Stefan Burger see to it that the forests are managed and used properly. “On the southern slopes, bare areas should not develop that are too large, because then the soil will dry out,” he says. “Close to villages, the focus is on keeping the forest stable so that the village is protected from mudslides, rock falls, and avalanches.” But it is not just healthy, strong trees that have a place in the
foxes, badgers, martens, wood grouses, and chamois prefer to use the forest unnoticed. The only evidence of their presence is usually tracks in the snow, small piles at the edge of paths, and bite and claw marks on the wood. Stags and roe deer enjoy scratching their antlers on tree trunks in order to get rid of the itchy velvet, a kind of hairy skin on their headdress. One way or another, every one of them leaves its traces in the forest, writing a new chapter in the history book of nature.

Ladin is
a separate and distinct Romance language which developed from the vulgar Latin that was spoken in the Alps toward the end of the Roman Empire. The language of the Rhaetians, who had settled here before the Romans, also left its mark on the vocabulary and grammar of Ladin.
The Ladins are closely
tied to their homeland. Just like every small linguistic community, it is necessary for them to constantly defend their cultural identity. Thus a special consciousness has developed for the language, culture, and traditions that are cared for and handed down with pride. Great esteem is enjoyed by the customs that have been passed on and the precious costumes, which are sewn by the women of the valley in lavish handicraft from the most costly of fabrics. Bolzano PUEZ-ODLE NATURE PARK
This encompasses an area of around 10,722 hectares (41 square miles) and can be called the “construction shed of the Dolomites. In particular, geologists find there all of the types of rock, layers of deposits, and weathered forms of minerals that are typical to the Dolomites. Plateaus that have developed into karsts, majestic rows of cliffs, gently rolling, fertile Alpine pastures situated against bizarrely rugged mountain silhouettes, deeply carved erosion valleys, and dark coniferous forests form a variety of landscapes that are rarely to be found in such a restricted space. The wealth of fossils provides a view of the different eras in the history of the earth.

VEDRETTE DI RIES-AURINA NATURE PARK
With an area of around 31,320 hectares (121 square miles) and over eighty peaks topping 3,000 meters (nearly 10,000 feet), it has the most glaciers of any nature park in South Tyrol. Another characteristic feature of the park is the wealth of water in all of its many forms. Mountain streams plunge over sheets of rock, cliffs, and valley plateaus into the depths. Out of the many waterfalls here, the Cascate di Riva-Reinbachfälle is particularly worthy of mention. It leaps from a valley plateau near Campo Tures-Sand in Taufers far below, providing a worthwhile hiking destination. At the end of the Valle Anterselva-Antholzertal is the Lago d’AnterselvaAntholzer See lake. It is the third largest natural lake in South Tyrol and, along with its surrounding area, is protected as a biotope.

VEDRETTE DI RIES-AURINA VISITOR CENTRE in Campo Tures-Sand in Taufers The Visitor Centre has been conceived according to the nature park’s motto “The boundaries of nature and the boundaries of man”. A three-dimensional relief map depicts mountains, paths, refuges, lakes, and waterfalls. The time line brings the story of the origin of the mountains to life, with their creation being shown as a sort of rock puzzle. Minerals and life-sized, hand-carved birds of prey astonish visitors.

An exhibition provides insight into the fascinating world of the Valle AurinaAhrntal valley. In the film “Prettauer Leben”, the inhabitants of the village are given the opportunity to speak. Four paths that continue on to cross the Austrian border form the heart of the exhibition and provide information about the variety of nature and the region’s history.
FANES-SENES-BRAIES NATURE PARK HOUSE in S. Vigilio-St. Vigil Visitors are informed about the origin of the Dolomites, life at the Alpine pasture, and fossils, especially the bones of the cave bear that were discovered in the nature park. The central component of the exhibition is the reproduction of the Conturines Cave.
PUEZ-ODLE NATURE PARK HOUSE in S. Maddalena-Funes St. Magdalena-Villnöss
FANES-SENES-BRAIES NATURE PARK
This park covers an area or approximately 25,453 hectares (98 square miles). It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009. Broad sections of the park are of great scientific significance as a result of its complex geomorphology. The Fanes and Senes plateaus, a popular hiking area, are characterized by the formation of karsts, with the typical fissures and hollows in which small lakes form. Scattered across the mountain slopes are the typical Ladin hamlets known as viles with their ancient wooden construction. These groups of farms were self-sufficient since they shared working quarters, ovens, etc. with each other.
An aerial image that can be walked on makes it possible for visitors to get a bird’s eye view of the nature park. The “Touch the Mountains” exhibition area deals with the main topic of the nature park, the geology of the Dolomites. In the “Hall of Natural Wonders”, visitors can learn about animal furs, bird eggs, feathers, animal tracks, teeth, antlers, and medicinal herbs.

CULTURE
NEW
CONCORDIA 2000
MMM CORONES
Enthroned on the 11 m (36 ft.) wide viewing platform at the peak of the Kronplatz is the 3.11 m (10 ft.) tall bell, the largest in the Alps. The Latin inscription on the Concordia 2000 reads “Donet deus populis pacem”, meaning “God grant peace to the peoples”. The ringing of the bell may be heard every day at noon. The bell is also rung if a death sentence is commuted in another country, as well as upon the end of a war.
South Tyrol’s Highest Museum The sixth Messner Mountain Museum has been realized on the summit of the Kronplatz at an elevation of 2,275 m (7,464 ft.) above sea level. The unique location of the mountain – at the intersection of the three cultures in South Tyrol-Südtirol: the German, the Italian, and the Ladin – was the impulse and the incentive for Reinhold Messner to build his last museum here. The museum is dedicated to the topic of “Trad. Adventure Alpinism” and will be inaugurated in the summer of 2015.

ACTION
FREERIDE-TRAILS
Three freeride trails at once provide the ultimate adrenaline kick on the Kronplatz. The Furcia Freeride Trail (starting point on the Kronplatz summit, length 3.5 km/2.2 miles) and the Piz de Plaies Freeride Trail (starting point at the Piz de Plaies mountain terminal, length 2 km/1.2 miles) have a degree of difficulty of medium. The Herrensteig Trail (starting point on the Kronplatz summit), on the other hand, with its 8 km (5 mile) long route, is designed for freeride pros. The ascent to each of them can be accomplished by means of one of the cable cars at the valley terminals in Riscone-Reischach, at the Passo Furcia-Furkelpass, and in S. Vigilio di Marebbe-St. Vigil in Enneberg.
SKYSCRAPER
With the giant swing at the peak of the Kronplatz, you are pulled up 15 meters (49 feet) with a cable winch, after which you have to release yourself so that then you can swing through the air while hanging from steel cables. Not for the weak of heart!
EVERYTHING WITH A SINGLE PASS Experience the summer of 2015 from lofty heights! Over a hundred offers for tourists and sports enthusiasts await you in the higher mountainous regions – in twelve valleys of the incomparable, spectacular network area of the Dolomites. With the unique Supersummer Offer, you can use more than a hundred mountain lifts with a single pass.

The Summer Holiday Region for Activities, Experiences, and Living it Up The Dolomites and the Pustertal-Val Pusteria are among the loveliest hiking areas in all of South Tyrol-S端dtirol. It is not so often that one runs across Alpine valleys with such a wide variety of hiking possibilities, from a simple comfortable stroll to a glacier tour. In addition to the impressive view from the hiking trails that at times reach high alpine elevations, there are also wonderful flora and fauna to discover, not to mention the wealth of bodies of water: babbling brooks and thundering waterfalls, along with their biotopes teeming with life. Educational thematic paths also make it possible to experience interesting facts about the location and its surroundings at the same time. And those who want to make it all the way to the top can try for the peak of one of the more than eighty mountains in the area that tower to three thousand meters (ten thousand feet). >>

The completely furnished, very well-preserved Taufers Castle is among the largest and most beautiful castles in all of Tyrol. Children have a great time at the “hands-on armoury. Art lovers will enjoy the frescoes by Renaissance artist Friedrich Pacher, while romantics will be thrilled by the picture book castle complex itself. The castle administration draws visitors throughout the year with special exhibitions, cultural events, and a castle tavern in the inner courtyard.

BRUNICO CASTLE MMM RIPA Brunico Castle is the fifth Messner Mountain Museum of the famous mountain climber Reinhold Messner. Dive into the world of the most varied of mountain peoples. A multitude of exhibits from the everyday life of the inhabitants of different mountain regions depict the life of Sherpas, Walsers, Burusho, and many other cultural circles of the entire world.

NEUHAUS CASTLE Gais A hilltop, a picturesque inner courtyard, and a castle tavern: that is Neuhaus Castle. More charming than defiant, and yet the home to great spirits: Oswald von Wolkenstein spent several years of his restless life here around 1520, and the famous American poet Ezra Pound also found a refuge for himself and his family here during the turmoil of the Second World War. Today the castle houses a hospitality establishment.

CASTLE 4 WELSPERG Monguelfo - Welsberg For centuries, now, the castle has watched over the entry to the Val Casies-Gsieser Tal. Its first documented mention was back in 1126. For nearly eight hundred years, it was in the possession of the Welsperg family. In the summer, the gates of the castle open up to visitors for concerts, exhibitions, and festivals of all kinds.

and represents just one of the highlights on the summer outdoor calendar. The residents of the Pustertal-Val Pusteria valley are as known for the organizing of spectacular events as for the celebrations themselves. In nearly every location within the Kronplatz Holiday Region, a traditional village festival is held during the summer months. This includes the setting up of decorated stands in the streets at which local culinary specialties are on offer. Music, dancing, and processions ensure a good time for all. Old and new friends alike gather at the Tauferer Straßenküche street food Festival, at the City Festival in Brunico, at an elegant concert in a castle, or at the phenomenal Gsieser Almhüttenfest Alpine Refuge Festival. Anyone staying home during the festivities has only themselves to blame. Traditions | Kronplatz Summer | 49
LIVING
Traditions COSTUMES
VILLAGE BANDS
Local bands have a grand tradition in South Tyrol-Südtirol. Friends of wind music and marches join together into groups and display their abilities at local festivals, concerts, and processions. Nearly every village has an amateur band or a farmer’s band which, dressed in traditional costume, lends a very special note to every event. Rehearsals are held every week during the winter to learn the programme for the next concert season. Old marches, beautiful waltzes, and contemporary music are all rehearsed with the bandleader. The first concerts then take place in the spring, and later on there are appearances at village and municipal festivals as well as on bank holidays and holy day events. Today, the district of Brunico-Bruneck is proud to boast of no fewer than fifty-four bands!
50 | Kronplatz Summer | Traditions
The traditional clothing of South Tyrol-Südtirol is a symbol of years gone by and conveys belonging to one’s homeland and its customs. Every valley has its own typical traditional dress which even today is still worn with pleasure and pride for special occasions. They can be seen above all else at appearances by village bands, folk dance groups, and companies of the Schützen Alpine guards. The traditional dress of the Pustertal-Val Pusteria is characterized by the colours black, blue, green, and red. The typical costume has handmade lace around the sleeves and neckline.
HOT
SPOT
MOESSMER The Moessmer fabric factory in Brunico is the oldest industrial company in the Pustertal. The textile company has been in fully integrated production since 1894 – from the wool to the top-quality fabric. At the turn of the previous century, the power of innovation made Moessmer supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and today it is a supplier to and partner with leading fashion labels. And in so doing,, sustainability in dealing with resources is their credo. With the development and production start of the first and only premium loden felt with the highest fire-resistant classification in 2010, Moessmer acquired a new market segment in the area of interior furnishing. The premium loden can also be seen in some cars of the Pustertal railway.
HANDICRAFT
For a long time, South Tyrol’s farmers lived virtually self-sufficiently. They made practically everything they needed by themselves. Long winter evenings were devoted to carving wood, weaving, embroidering, lace-making, sewing, and knitting. That was the origin of useful implements such as baskets and woollen stockings, but also artistic items such as crèche figurines and the accessories to the typical South Tyrolean traditional dress. Simple sheep’s wool was made into, for example, practical and warming articles such as Patschen (felt slippers). If a long time ago, this was more a side job or a way to pass the time in the winter for farmer’s wives and farmers, today it is the fond preservation of traditions and the continuation and further development of abilities that have been passed down through the generations.

Good Health FROM THE Vacation A vacation should be refreshing, it should bring happiness – and in the best case even make you healthier
to a certain extent. To do so, neither a doctor nor medications are necessary, but rather the right mixtu-
re of clean air, unspoiled landscape, and knowledge about the healing powers of nature.

FOR YOUR
Health
BREATHING FREELY, DEEP INSIDE THE MOUNTAIN Anyone who wants to breathe freely has to go deep inside the mountain. Five hundred meters (nearly a third of a mile) below the surface of the earth is the Predoi-Prettau Climate Mineshaft. It is humid, cool, and yet pleasantly cosy – for those suffering from asthma or allergies, a stay is a relief. The reason for this? The relative humidity is nearly one hundred percent. Substances in the air that trigger allergies are bonded with and settle on the walls of the mineshaft – instead of reaching the lungs. Once the cool, pure air is inhaled, it warms up and removes fluid from the swollen mucous membranes.

At the same time, an interesting programme of accompanying events will provide the opportunity for guided hikes, visits to mills, baking bread, cooking classes, and a visit to an old farmhouse set up in the centre of the village that has been furnished true to the original style. A “Schmelzpfandl” is the melting pot in which the butter was melted for the hearty dishes.

The indoor area consists of five pools: a competitive, fun, active, sun, and baby pool all together provide a water area of 800 sq. m (8,600 sq. ft.) HEALING NATURALLY ...
BERGILA HERB PILLOWS WITH ALPINE HERBS Back in grandmother’s day, people were already swearing by the effects of herb pillows. Flowers from the hayfields at high Alpine locations are mixed with herbs from inspected organic cultivation and enriched with essential oils in a special process. Herb pillows have a calming effect on the nervous system and a pleasant balm effect upon the breathing passages. Since 1912, the family-run operation Bergila from Issengo-Issing near Falzes-Pfalzen has been producing essential oils and herb products with processes that have been handed down from one generation to another.

RESTAURANTS & INNS The Pustertal-Val Pusteria is famous for its versatile and traditional cuisine, and the selection is truly huge: from the gourmet temple to the family-run inn to cosy restaurants and rustic Alpine refuges, there is just the right thing for every palate. Genuine hospitality, making sure that guests are satisfied, and the love of tradition are all the main focus.
Hasenöhrl, Schlutza, Tirschtlan... No,those are not the names of breathtaking peaks of the Dolomites, but rather the finest highpoints of the cuisine of the Pustertal-Val Pusteria. Allow yourself to be swept away on a voyage of culinary delights: from downtoearth South Tyrolean fare like out of Grandma’s recipe collection to light Italian cuisine with fine Mediterranean vegetables to the most delectable Austrian desserts that just have to be tried. North and South melt together in the pot into an unmistakable culinary palette for the palate. And depending upon personal taste, wine drinkers will find a rich selection of South Tyrolean
Local Products Fragrant Alpine cheese, homemade bread, fresh berries from their own garden, elder flower syrups, Pustertal potatoes, and all kinds of vegetables – these are just some of the products that farmers from this valley produce and offer. Local products are more popular than ever, since that is simply the best way to know what is in them. But it is not just for that reason: quality simply tastes better, and shorter transport distances protect the environment. There are therefore many reasons for visiting a farmer’s market or making a stop at one of the many direct sellers.

A VIEW OF
WINTER
One Holiday Region, Three Ski Areas, and Unforgettable Active Adventures
The Kronplatz Holiday Region is a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts. Three ski areas at once call the Region their own. The Kronplatz-Plan de Corones, South Tyrol-Sßdtirol’s number one skiing mountain, is a part of the Dolomiti Superski ski association, and as such, it has modern cable cars and chair lifts and perfectly groomed slopes and offers one hundred percent chance of snow. The Speikboden in the Valli di Tures and Aurina-Tauferer Ahrntal is especially appreciated by families with children. The small, very manageable ski area offers a fantastic view of over eighty 3,000 meter (10,000 foot) peaks. The Klausberg in Cadipietra-Steinhaus in the Valle Aurina-Ahrntal is the highest ski area within the Holiday Region. At 2,510 meters (8,235 feet) above sea level are found the best-groomed slopes with the most varied of degrees of difficulty. Away from the slopes, those who love sledding, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating, ice climbing, or ski touring can let off all the steam they want and then allow themselves to be pampered with a massage or a health spa experience.
