PERSONAL STATEMENT I had to fight for architecture. While I have always had an interest since I was young, my parents’ constant disapproval meant that I have to fight for this dream of mine. Even with this victory from this long winded ‘battle’, semester 1 was a struggle. From a background of business and physics, architecture came as a shock high amount of work or the amount of creativity and technique that comes with it. Come semester 2 I realised that I wanted to do something different. I’ve always had the passion for the environment and I want my designs to be something other than using closed up designs that needed mechanical help, like air conditioners and conventional lightings; but instead using naturally ventilated and lighting features. In order to make the world a better place, architecture plays a huge role in improving the environment. Buildings that disregard the context of the surroundings and also the use of natural lighting and ventilation were my pet peeves. Malaysia is gifted with such beautiful weather, with bright sunny days and windy, humid weather. Other than that, architectures that pay no attention to the weather are unsettles me as well. There are buildings that are built in a way that are unaware of the amount of rain the country gets, causing people to scurry off into the buildings, trying to get from building to building without getting soaked. Ignoring these factors while designing a building are, in my opinion, disrespectful of the long history of architecture. I went to a few talks and an insightful internship that taught me alternative options. How they look at the architecture world opened up my eyes. By reusing materials and also designing great green buildings, and ideas flew. Researches on reusable materials and environmental friendly architectural features were conducted. Buildings with more open spaces, naturally ventilated and naturally lighted features were used, the materials used were reusable. One of my favourite projects was my semester 5 studio final. We were to design a food market in Chowkit, a red light district in the city. There were a lot of homeless people to be found, that were from all ages. With that, a soup kitchen was added into the building - to feed the homeless and helping them to get back on their feet. That not only improves the surrounding area, it also helps clean up the streets while helping the people gain their lives back. The building itself is designed in a way where it is mostly self-sustainable, be it environmentally or financially. Green Building Index list were consulted and the building was designed according to the checklist. Green walls were used to filter polluted air, while still letting in sunlight and the building facade were louvres instead of brick walls to allow ventilations when it is windy, and closed up when it is rainy. I’m keen to study in the UK, not only because the UK houses the best universities, but to immerse myself in a new world. I’m also excited to expose myself to a country rich of history, culture, art and architecture, but also home for one of the most technologically advanced architecture scene. It goes without saying that I would love to have the opportunity to gain knowledge from this two years of Masters in the UK. As a fast learner, I will thrive in learning and opening myself to new ideas in this ever evolving environment. I’ve made a few sacrifices along the way. but all in all, I’m content. I’m very happy that I fought for the chance to actually take this amazing path. I don’t just want to be an architect in the future, but someone that helps to push the world towards sustainable architecture. I want to make a difference not for myself, but for a better environment for the future generations to live in. I know that if we slowly influence the rest of the architecture world and convince them that sustainable architecture is the way to go, maybe instead of going downhill, our environment will improve.
LOCAL FOOD MARKET & SOUP KITCHEN Although the buildings’ man purposee is for a food market area. The idea behind the building has always been to give chowkit a social intervention. The homeless roam about in chowkit, the intention of the building is to create a social awareness in the society around chowkit, while helping the homeless. The building is self sustainable, both financially and environmentally.

PROGRAMS THE LOCAL FOOD MARKET The main attraction of the building which is the gathering of the famous local food around Chow Kit.
FOOD KIOSKS The area provides a space for the venders around the market near the building to sell their fingerfood from fried foods to local drinks.

SOUP KITCHEN While instilling a ‘donating culture’ the users are encouraged to donate some money, or donate physical necessities to the soup kitchen. Other than that, foods are also prepared here and distributed throughout KL City. An area is also provided for the homeless to eat in the building.
HELP CENTRE Help centre is to help the homeless get back on their feet. Temporary clinics with volunteer doctors for free medical check up, volunteers to offer advices for the homeless that wants to get jobs, providing with key information and helping on job application. Spaces are also provided for training sessions. Homeless also can work in the building as mainenece crew.
REST AREA This area provides a space for the homeless to rest. It provides showers, sofa and lounging area for them to sit and rest, also games to pass time.

With different elevated panels, different light patterns is created. Not only that, the panel is also doubled as light weight solar panel, saving space on the roof. It can also be shifted to a better angle for more solar power harnest.

DESIGN PROCESS The very first thing that the design is focused on is the green area.

Voids are explored first, playing with different shapes to determine the suitable one for the building and the market. The sections are then studied, creating double volume spaces and extra voids to allow more ventilation and natural lighting to enter. Roofing and facade is lastlytaken into consideration, bringing the exterior factors that affect the building. Lastly, the design moves towards creating a green building, using natural resources instead of mechanical help. First priorities were given to:- Circulation - Access - Public Spaces - Lighting - Air Circulation - Sustainability - Material - Low energy building
The zoning of the building is explored through the overlapping of two very different programs. The idea is to merge the two programs together so that the building works as a whole, not only keeps the programs going but also focusing on keeping the building self sustainable, not only on the environmental factor, but also the financial side.

We were to design a space that embodies and expresses of a conceptual narrative. We were given a chance to create a character from a movie chosen, (in our case, TRON 2010) and to create a hide out for the character My character is an ISO (Isomorphic Algorithm) who escaped the mass murdering wit the city as a Program. At night, while monitoring the TVs, he and the ISOs do some vigilante work, trying to take the city back bit by bit.
The hideout sits on top of a cross over bridge on top of a busy road - hidden in plain sight.
The jagged surface of the roof reflects light to cause the building to be invisible to public, providing the ISOs privacy and keeps them hidden. The Opening below allows transportation to pass through

I wanted something more organic, and so I shaped up a cone. The space provided was only 5m wide, so therefore I placed two walls on its side to the one below.

Semester 1
In one of the class in our first semester, we are introduced to the possibility to communicate through our drawings and sketches. In our first exercise, we were to sketch some spaces through observation, while also to learn to communicaate through the sketches. Not only that, we were taught four variations of sketching techniques - stippling, hatching, cross hatching and scribbling. With that skill, we were to produce 4 drawings of the same object with their shaddows using different techniques.
After brushing up our sketching skills, we were introduced to the traditional methods of architectural drafting. In this exercise, plans, axonometric projection and perspectives were explored. Drawing by hand provides an opportunity to understand the basics of drafting and also to understand architectural plans by studying it in detail and the ability to apply them to the design process and presentation.

Semester 2 . 5
The short semester was dedicated to us understanding the principles of building preservation and the method of recording in three documentation method: on site sketching, measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation. We, as a group were to produce drawings, a photobook, report and also a physical model.
Our group was assigned to Tai Pak Gong in Penang, a Taoist temple that is around two centuries old. It is declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated on one of the busiest street of Penang town. It was built by the local Chinese community in 1801. We were there for roughly 6 days, tasked to collect data of the buildings. Group of 27 students were seperated into different groups: Measuring of buildings,;researching on the history, circulation, architectural style and architectural features of the building; interviewing with the people involved with the temple and photo documentation. We were to sketch out the context of the building individually, and then produce the following:

Semester 3
As I walk around the park, there’s a lot of plants are low and bushy, or the complete opposite with a heavy dense of busy surrounding it. After stepping up to the site after climbing a series of stairs, exhausted, I let my mind wonder. Huge trees with their partners, the bushy plants cling tightly with each other by the side of the open space. While looking up, the sky streched out towards the horizon. Wondering around the site, I subconciously stepped under a huge tree. noticing as this particular plan has chosen a ‘short’ companion. The plans grew, right below the knee. Lifting up my head, the tree trunk extends up into the air, and it’s branches spreads out like a web, engulfing me. Warm rays of sunlight penetrates through my skin, sunlight glimmered through the gaps of the leaves while some parts are shaded, leaving the surrounding well lit enough but still cool enough for a shade. Standing underneath the humongous tree looking up at the sunlight teasing through the leaves, Feeling like the trees were giving a huge warm comforting hug, embracing me with it’s big branch, protecting me. There’s a reminder of the war the country have to endure. The grief the people have to go through, having their country being attacked. Even though they were at war, they never give up. The site had proven itself that the people had hope. Even though it was a dark time, the glimpse of hope still shine through the grief.
The different level in floor plan was inspired by the overlapping of leaves, which allows the rays of sunshine to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;wiggleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; through. The facade is inspired by the texture of the tree bark. When user is inside the building, the user is able to see surrounding site from inside the building, so that the user can feel close to nature. The slits on the facade allows air to rush in faster, naturally ventilating the building. The facade also blocks part of the sunlight from entering the building, creating shadows. And when user moves around in the building and sunlight hits the user, creating an uplifting sensation.

The top floor of the building over looks the sea, and also the city scape just beyond the horizon.While visitors have their short break at the cafe, they have the opportunity to enjoy the view of the view just over the top of the trees.

The office and toilet area is surrounded by stairs leading from the cafe (top) to the exit. Bamboos were used as railing. The materials in the building are mostly reused/ recycled. The floor and wall on the first floor are solid concrete. The columns, the top floor flooring and the roof are all reclaimed wood. Other than that, the railing going up and down from the top floor are made from bamboos. They are easily grown and is sturdy and long lasting.

The concrete slab on first floor is rough, and when the user slowly ascends to the top floor, the material used gets smoother and smoother, symbolizes when the country and the people moves nearer and nearer to the end of war, the journey gets smoother.

After a series of stairs, the user reached the upper floor, i.e. the cafe and the first thing the user will observe is the ocean and the city scape. As the building is lifted up, the view from the top floor is spectacular. Whilst enjoying the view, the user is able to make use of the cafe.

The structure is located beside CODA of Taylor’s Lakeside campus. It serves as a waiting area for students throughout the day. The form is derived from the structure of a tree - a highly symbolic structure that creates shade and can offer ideal shelter and resting places for all mankind. A function that repeats itself in every corner of the planet. This tree was made into something more creative and unique with the aid of water bomb tesselations - a type of tessellation technique that changes its form from cross-shaped dams to tight squares, accomodating various environmental functions.
During different times of the day, the structure takes advantage of the hot sun and provides shade while creating unique shadow effects from its geometrical sheets, bringing sense of peace to the people around. Origami is very much known for bringing happiness, a sense of peace and patience. It gives one the ability to create something out of nothing but a plain sheet of paper. Looking at the campus as a whole, it is a repetition of the same building materials. Using origami, we present an amped up version of beauty in repetition not only to create relationship between students and the artistic side of architecture, but also to promote and raise awareness towards sustainable design. The roof of the structure consists of glass fiber polyester - a lightweight, low- csting building material that is friendly to the environment and able to withastand high pressures with temperatures, making it suitable for the hot climate here in Malaysia. ‘UNFOLD’ is designed to respond to Taylor’s site context, taking advantage of the sunlight, catching prevailing winds and giving shelter to incoming rain, ensuring comfort of its students.

The intention is to achieve unity through design. the purpose of the building is to help rebuild lives of the lost (Ex drug users) by helping them get back on their feet, by giving them extra skilsets in the art department. The art centre includes art from all kinds of religion. The comnination of the art will improve the understanding of not only art, but about other religions. Peple that will be sharing the skillset will be proffesionals that have been in the industriy for a very long time, religious leaders as well and the elderly folks that stays around the communities as they have the most esperience in old religion rituals and cultures. PROJECT OBJECTIVE The programme mainly aims to bring together the community, in a spirityal level, by providing a common crosspath of different faith, which is art. The idea is to bring the long lost art back to the people. Not only that, to cross the seperation between faith among the people and have them come together as a whole. People with different believes and goals on what a higher being(s) is/are see each other as equal and companion.
LRT STATION
The recovery centre aims to work hand in hand with PENGASIH to help the people from rehab to get back on their feet, not only to help them recover after the rehab, but to push them to get back on their feet. The art studios is to help them learn a new skill and to venture back into the world by themselves.
RESIDENTIAL AREA
The programme teaches the community, young and old, and also the recoverers the skills of crafting/painting/moulding the different types of art in that is available, pulling everybody together. Not only that it provides a meditation space for the people to meditate, finding themselves or to communicate with their own believes.
CLIENT AND STACKHOLDERS
PENGASIH Pengasih has been operating since 1993, giving treatment services and rehab. They also helped with the recovery after the rehab, by helping them get jobs, putting them in halfway houses. Not only that, they create awareness events such as exhibitions and seminars to students and society to combat the problems of drug abuse. Vision: To be an internationally recognized Institute and Knowledge centre for Holistic Approach in Substance Abuse Treatment and Rehabilitation.

Users walking around the building also serves as a facade to the inner part of the building. When first stepping into the building, the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;moving facadeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; i.e. people walking around the building would be one of the attraction. The livelyness of the building and the interaction of the open spaces gives the user a sence of belonging. This will increase the sense of community towards the building. There are people walking around on the uper floors, users going up and down the main glass staircase, users meditating in the meditation room, a buzzing cafe with people talking to one another and most of all, the gallery and the right side of the building. PERSPECTIVE OF PHYSICAL MODEL
Wooden Overhang
Stone Louvres Wooden overhang are used as a replacement of conventional roof. It not only increases the aesthetic of the area, it also provides shade to the building without cutting off most of the sunlight.
There are multiple types of facade around the building, mainly focusing on the stone louvres. Apart from the aesthetic purposes, stone louvres allow natural lighting and ventilation to occur, while shielding the building from rain. Other than that, louvres create different shadow effects in the building.

Perspectives
Gabion wall facade is situated on the bottom floors of the building. It is consists of recycled concrete as to not only safe materials used, but also to reduce the carbon footprint of the building.

Adjacency Matrix
The idea is to have a community / public common space in the middle of the building, where it can be seen from anywhere in the building
By slanting the building, the wind coming from the North West direction will help create a negative pressure on the building, pullling the hot air away from the building, allowing cold air to enter from the sides.
Stack shaft used by the building provides an advantage in coling down the building by transfering hot air in the building out of the building. The air flow on top of the building act as a carrier, pushing the air from the shaft out of the building, creating a nevative pressure, allowing the building to pull in fresh air.

It is also decided that the main entrance of the building is to be welcomed by some of the main activities of the building, hence to emphasise some of the building features I.e: Meditation hall & Gallery
