Will Irish Rail die away?
A
new joint coach service in Ireland offers non-stop three-hour journeys from Cork to Dublin with value fares, sensibly timed departures and a high level of comfort, plus free WiFi. It looks like a real winner for GoBus and Bus Eireann – but what of its competitor – the train? The Irish press is full of news saying rail services are to be cut because of falling patronage (25% drop over five years). The swing started some time ago as fuel prices began to increase – but now the completed motorway network means even coaches can cover the distance in less time. The Irish government forked out around €35m last year so Irish Rail would not have to cut services but it is unlikely to be in line for more funding if its fares keep rising while its services are being slashed and its quality called into question. Undoubtedly the unions will squeal – but rail travel is becoming unviable. All this comes after huge
investment in rail over recent years plus new trains and carriages for services operating out of Dublin. Speculators say rail should only be used for freight. Others point out standard container freight would not have sufficient clearance through tunnels or under bridges which would seriously inhibit its viability. The investment needed just to electrify the network would be prohibitive enough in today’s climate – but to totally rebuild the infrastructure is almost unthinkable. Promotional fares of €20 return between the two cities and €25 to Dublin Airport are offered online and a Bus Eireann spokesman said the pricing structure would be reviewed soon. It already operates a coach service between Dublin and Cork for around €21 return, but it stops frequently. Irish Rail’s fares between both cities can range from €40 to more than €70 return, depending when the booking is made. Providing people with less and charging more for it is not a recipe for long-term success. Martin Cole Technical Editor

The eldest of three brothers, Viv was a school teacher, but had been more involved in the business in the 25 years since his retirement. He leaves three sons who are still involved with the business – Gareth, David and Glyn. Our thoughts are with all who were fortunate to know him. Yellow Buses’ joint charity scheme with the Daily Echo has now raised £10,000. The money has been spread over 42 different causes since the initiative was launched in 2008. The milestone was reached when the latest cheques were presented to Poole and District Children’s Cancer Fund and Moordown-based Who Let The Dads Out. Jenni Wilkinson, Yellow Buses’ Head of Marketing, said: “We know from the letters of appreciation we receive that Carbon Stoppers has made a real difference to many people. Our thanks go to our loyal customers for helping us reach the £10,000 mark.” The award-winning firm pledges a minimum donation of £50 per week to the Carbon Stoppers fund with newspaper readers invited to nominate worthy recipients. Stagecoach West has introduced a new bus service and enhanced an existing one. Route 44 runs between Hereford, Hoarwithy and Ross-on-Wye and replaces the 37 service operated by George Young’s Coaches. Route 35 has also been enhanced with more peak journeys serving Monmouth. Certain journeys on route 44 are subsidised by Herefordshire Council and a number of journeys on service 35 are supported by Herefordshire Council and Gloucestershire County Council. Ian Manning, Stagecoach West MD, said: “In these difficult economic times we are delighted to be launching a new Stagecoach service and enhancing an existing one. We are delighted to be working in partnership with local authorities and both changes further enhance our network in the Ross-on-Wye and Herefordshire areas.” www.coachandbusweek.com

The Wright structure for the future Divisional structure paves way for future international growth & development for the Wright Group The Wright Group has confirmed a new divisional structure for its business, geared to deliver a strategy focused on rapid international development and accelerated product innovation. A new division – Wrightbus International – led by newly promoted MD Damian McGarry will drive forward a number of initiatives in key overseas markets which collectively, will provide significant growth opportunities for the Group. Wrightbus International has already established an office in Singapore, employing locally based staff, with further developments in the pipeline. At Wrightbus a new externally recruited MD, Dermot Sterne, takes the helm. The business will continue to be the UK product development and manufacturing hub and, in addition to his responsibilities for operations and engineering activities, Dermot will also direct the management of customer relationships throughout the European market, including the Group’s Customcare aftersales organisation. Dermot brings with him a wealth of automotive expertise, most latterly as MD at Stadco. A member of IMechE, he has gained invaluable experience at main board level at Johnson Controls Automotive (UK), as well as holding a number of management and development positions within the Ford Motor

Mandy Knowles and Mark Johnston continue as Group HR and Group Finance Directors respectively, with Mark Nodder (Group MD) and Jeff Wright (Chairman) completing the composition of the main board. “We’ve been doing a lot of work behind the scenes over the last 18 months or so to finalise our strategy and planning in detail the means by which we can achieve our significant ambitions,” said Mark Nodder. “We are now part of a highly competitive and increasingly globalised bus business and we must be even more focused and unrelenting in our efforts to deliver and support high quality products, with the lowest cost of ownership. “Working closely with a number of key partners, we have already achieved recent significant successes – domestically with StreetLite and New Bus for London and internationally on various product platforms in Singapore, Hong Kong and the USA. We have also led the way in the development of hybrid technology both in the UK and beyond.” He concluded: “However, whilst our home market remains the bedrock of our business in the near term, capitalising further on international opportunities with a complete and highly cost competitive product range - will be the key to unlocking long term success. That is where Wright Group’s future lies.” “If you saw any suspicious activity in the area of Sherburn Industrial Estate on the night of the offence, please contact the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible. “I would also like to hear from anyone who has been offered any of these wheels for sale in recent weeks.” Anyone who can help police is asked to phone PC Fulford on 101, quoting reference 12120141404.

Concessionary bus pass holders can now get a third off train travel as part of a 12-month experiment announced by UK Transport Minister Norman Baker. The trial, an attempt to encourage more older and disabled people to use trains, was launched on two test routes on Sunday. The scheme, being rolled out by First Great Western (FGW), will apply to standard off-peak fares between Worcester and Swindon via Stroud and between Westbury and Weymouth. However, contrary to the apparent tone of the DfT’s statement, the concept is far from groundbreaking – for the Welsh Government has allowed holders of bus passes issued by selected authorities to obtain ‘free’ travel on certain railway lines.
Some Welsh bus pass holders can use it for travel on the Conwy Valley line. An Arriva Trains Wales class 150 is seen at Blaenau Ffestiniog
CILT calls for a strategy & funding for UK roads
CILT’s call follows the Government’s response to the Cook Report on the Highways Agency – ‘A Fresh Start for the Strategic Road Network: the Government Response’ – and its intention to publish the findings of its study in the autumn into alternative funding and ownership models for the strategic roads network. Steve Agg, Chief Executive of CILT, said: “Businesses and households together spend £44billion a year on vehicle purchase and contribute £38billion in road user taxation to the Exchequer. The road network is vital to the efficiency of transport and its contribution to economic growth. Developing a long-term

strategy for our roads network and an appropriate funding package, as applies to rail, is long overdue.” The CILT said it welcomes the Government’s intention to develop a Road Strategy within the Government’s overall Transport Strategy, especially the suggestion the Highways Agency should be given output targets. It also recommends the Government makes contingencies for a sizeable expansion in tax-free electricallypowered vehicles and the likely fall-off in revenues – and be clear about the role of tolling implied in its current study of ownership and financing models. I am confident this scheme will help bolster those links and provide real benefits to those who need it most.” Mark Hopwood, FGW Managing Director, said: “We’re delighted to be able to take part in this trial, which should help improve access for senior citizens and people with disabilities to the services we offer.” The aim of the study is to provide the DfT with robust information to inform Train Operating Companies (TOCs) and the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) on the commercial viability of extending some of the privileges associated with the Senior and Disabled Railcard to all holders of English National Concessionary travel passes. The DfT is due a final research report from FGW in November 2013. Details of the Welsh scheme can be found at www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk/ ConcessionaryTravel/
Government to consider international experience and also to look much further ahead for the roads network than its current five year horizon. The long lead times in designing road improvements and obtaining planning approval mean route strategies will need to look at demand growth over the next 2030 years and the most efficient way of meeting it on each route. The Institute wants a High Level Output Statement together with an associated network asset base, matching the arrangements for rail. Agg concluded: “Ensuring the road network is planned as part of an overall transport strategy is vital. So far there is no sign of this.”

The number of years telematics provider Quartix has been running
briefly The operator of Guernsey’s bus services, CT Plus, believes revised timetables and routes could solve issues with service punctuality. A spokesman said it had asked the Environment Department for permission to make the changes. He said the firm found problems with sticking to the timetable during peak periods. If approved, the changes are due to be included in the winter schedule. Meanwhile, there are proposed changes to the winter timetable in Jersey, currently run by Connex. Alterations would include changes to route 3A during roadworks, extra stops on route 4, changes to the time of one service on route 12 and a number of changes to route 25. Transport and Technical Services Minister Deputy Kevin Lewis said: “My aim is to enhance services. I believe these proposals will be favourably received by passengers.” The new timetable would run from September 30 to December 31 before CT Plus takes over Jersey’s bus service. Arriva Midlands has introduced a new Shropshire Teen Card. The initiative entitles 16 to 19-year-olds from the Shropshire Council area to purchase Shropshire Weekly Teencard Savers for £20 or Shropshire Day Teencards for £5, saving £5 and £1 respectively. Keith Myatt, Marketing and Communications Manager for Arriva Midlands, said: “We have listened to feedback from our customers during recent consultation in the Shropshire area and are pleased to introduce the Shropshire Teen Card – a discount saver ticket for 16 to 19-year-olds. This is a good time for us to be moving up a gear.” Northern Ireland’s stateowned Translink has allowed a private operator to use its main Belfast bus and coach station for the first time. The Europa Buscentre is now used by Rooney International Coach Hire Ltd as part of a trial exercise. The company will run nine services from the station. Translink said it had been working with the owner, Eamonn Rooney, and Stormont’s Department for Regional Development (DRD) for the past few months on the scheme. www.coachandbusweek.com

Third round of Scottish GBF £3m to be made available this financial year which is expected to pay for about 40 hybrids The Scottish Government has announced a third round of Green Bus Funding (SGBF), with a total of £3m being made available this financial year for bus operators to buy so-called ‘greener’ vehicles. The latest round of funding is expected to pay for about 40 hybrids. Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown said: “The Scottish Government is absolutely committed to public transport and to our ambitious climate change target of reducing carbon emissions by 42% by 2020.
“Our two previous Scottish green bus funds enabled nine private bus operators to introduce 74 new low carbon buses to Scotland’s roads and this is another clear indication of our support and commitment to the bus industry in Scotland. “Early indications from the use of vehicles bought in the first phase are showing substantial fuel savings and reduced emissions. “We want the people of Scotland to experience those very real benefits as quickly as possible and this announcement will have a huge impact on that ambition. “Low carbon transport benefits us all through an improved environment and a strong public

New Versa from Optare Optare has added an 11.7m Versa to its range which it claims has the passenger capacity of a 12m singledecker but weighs in at less than eight tonnes. The firm believes the new Versa’s lower capital cost, fuel saving potential and the ability to carry up to 44 seated passengers will prove particularly appealing to operators of inter-urban services. Four new Versas have been delivered to Arriva and Optare also reports considerable interest

transport network plays a part in this, as well as cutting congestion on the roads and making them safer for all users.” Mr Brown launched the latest round of the GBF during a visit to Alexander Dennis in Falkirk. CEO Colin Robertson said: “There are now almost 450 ADL hybrids operating in the UK, mainland Europe, Hong Kong and Sydney – but we need to keep our foot on the pedal in terms of advancing the technology even further. “Thanks to initiatives like the SGBF, our business is now established as one of Europe’s leading suppliers of low carbon hybrid-electric buses, supporting 900 jobs in Falkirk and a further 2,000 in our vast supply chain network. “Our hybrids are currently demonstrating a 60% reduction in fuel and CO2 compared to many conventional diesel buses.” He added: “We will take our next-generation hybrid to another level in 2013 and I expect to see fuel efficiency move towards 70%.” Operators which benefited from the last round of the SGBF were Henderson’s Travel, National Express Dundee, Lothian Buses, MacEwan’s Coach Services and Deveron Coaches. Three manufacturers benefitted from round two – Alexander Dennis Ltd, Volvo and Optare. platform in the development of a hybrid school bus. Glenn Saint, Chief Technical Officer, explained the school buses, which have a seating capacity of 57 using a 3+2 arrangement, presented particular challenges in regard to keeping the weight down. He said: “We were able to meet those challenges and saw the opportunity to carry across the weight saving measures to an extended Versa. The result is this 11.7-metre diesel model weighing less than eight tonnes, which will undoubtedly impact positively on the already acknowledged excellent fuel efficiency of our Versa models and further improve their revenue earning potential.”

BRIEFLY Motorway lighting is to be permanently switched off on a 13-mile stretch of the the M1 between junction 13 (Bedford) and the border between Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. This is the second stretch of motorway in the region where lighting is being switched-off, following on from the M1 between junction 10 (Luton) and 13 (Bedford). Under a revised standard for lighting on England’s motorways and major A roads introduced in 2007, lights would not be installed at these sites if the existing lighting was due to be replaced – or if the sites were opening as new. The motorway junctions and their approaches will remain lit. The next series of overnight closures on the M5, to the north of Bristol, began on Tuesday (September 4). The motorway is to be closed between 2200 and 0600hrs and will allow the Highways Agency to install overhead gantries. The northbound carriageway, between junctions 16 and 15, is closed overnight on Friday, September 7. Entry and exit slip roads to the junctions are to be closed from 2100hrs onwards and clearly signed diversion routes will be in place throughout the works. Further overnight closures will be required on various sections of the M5 between junction 14 and 17 through to November, but they will not be every night. Work to upgrade the M62 through West Yorkshire to a managed motorway continues. The latest stage of the work – to allow communications work to be carried out safely – has resulted in one lane being closed in both directions on the existing four-lane section between junction 28 (Tingley) and junction 29 (Lofthouse). Three lanes will remain open in each direction during this phase of work, which is due to be completed on this stretch by early New Year. Three narrow lanes will continue between junctions 25 (Brighouse) to 28 (Dewsbury), and junctions 29 (M1) to 30 (Rothwell), and a 50mph limit is in operation over 24 hours. The full stretch is scheduled to open to traffic in 2013–14. www.coachandbusweek.com

Reynolds Diplomat extends GreenRoad use to Facebook Drivers are given praise on Facebook walls and the company’s own page Aware of the huge explosion in the use of social media, Reynolds Diplomat Coaches has hit upon a novel way of congratulating drivers who have achieved exemplary GreenRoad safety scores. It announces their success by posting on their individual Facebook pages as well as on the company’s own Facebook profile. “Naturally we look at the weekly driver performance reports GreenRoad generates and take action accordingly, but we also sit down and work out which drivers are the safest on a monthly basis,” explained Sue Reynolds, owner and manager of the Watford-based coach operator. “To qualify they need to have driven a minimum number of hours in the month concerned. “At least 80% of our drivers are my Facebook friends and I noticed they regularly posted status updates about where they had
driven in their coaches that day and even went as far as to mention how happy they were with the job they had done cleaning the vehicle.” Sue decided Facebook could be the way forward to engage with her team of drivers and to congratulate them on success. She had rosettes ‘pictures’ designed for ‘best driver’, ‘most improved’ and ‘you have beaten your target’ and started posting them as photos on the drivers’ walls. “It is an approach which works really well to communicate success to each driver’s community,” she continued. “As drivers’ friends, families and colleagues look at their Facebook walls it acts as an incentive too. As each posting gets ‘likes’ and comments, the praise builds and there are sometimes words of encouragement urging a friend to get to be the best driver. “In addition, on the business side our customers can look at our company Facebook page and see we employ safe drivers.” For those drivers not on Facebook, Sue still issues traditional

certificates. GreenRoad gives individual drivers instant feedback about their driving behaviour thanks to a traffic-light-style green-amberred display installed in the cab display. If they corner too quickly or accelerate too harshly then the display goes red. All instances of poor driving are recorded and can be downloaded and subsequently analysed and discussed with the driver concerned. Each individual is given a safety score and encouraged to perform better. Poorly performing drivers are provided with extra training. Sue and her husband Richard are Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) trainers and the firm is authorised to deliver Driver CPC courses. Reynolds first looked at what GreenRoad has to offer back in 2009 at the suggestion of its insurance broker, Belmont International. “We were suffering from rather too many bits of bent metal and were looking for ways to persuade our drivers to calm down and give themselves and other road users a bit more space,” Sue explained. “I liked the GreenRoad concept but I wasn’t sure how well the drivers would receive it. Within days they were all on board. “It has certainly resulted in a reduction in the number of minor shunts and I’m sure it has given us fuel savings too.” The safety benefits of GreenRoad also come in particularly useful when Reynolds Diplomat tenders for school contracts. Sue said: “The Safety Heat Map, which allows us to identify areas that pose high accident risks, has enabled us to convince a school and its pupils’ parents that picking up children at a particular spot did not make sense from a road safety viewpoint. “It clearly showed the matter was not merely a subjective judgement on my part. The danger was all too real.”

Research has shown that in other major shopping and leisure complexes, such as the Trafford Centre, organised coach trips deliver a significant proportion of the customers. Councillor Liam Robinson, Chairman of Merseytravel, said: “Liverpool One is important to the region’s economy and we’re delighted to be able to help. The more visitors we can encourage into the heart of our region the more we can help regeneration. “The designated bays are

The coach operator concerned, Chalkwell of Sittingbourne, has praised the rescue centre and posted a letter of thanks to the management. A spokesman for Chalkwell said Redwings kept staff on duty and ‘couldn’t do enough’ to help the party of 30 whose stay at the sanctuary was extended an extra two hours. “We have written to thank them for their kindness in looking
after our passengers following an unfortunate breakdown which could have had an unhappy ending but had a happy one instead.” Miss Debbie Johnston, the centre’s Visitor Centre Manager, said: “I like my coach holidays and know how I would have felt in their circumstances. My colleagues and I were delighted to look after the visitors. At least the coach broke down where we could look after everyone – it could have been worse such as on the M11.”
CTTC raises concerns on Irish fuel duty The Coach Tourism and Transport Council (CTTC) has claimed high taxes on diesel are killing the Irish coach tourism industry. Gerry Mullins, CTTC Chief Executive said half of what is paid at the pumps for diesel in Ireland goes to the Government. “High fuel taxation is a false saving as the Government will have to cover the cost of jobs lost from tourism.” The CTTC claimed when a litre of diesel costs around 1.54 euro, the coach firm will spend around 50% on taxes including excise duty, carbon tax, VAT and on the National Oil Reserves Levy. It called on the Irish Government to introduce a new form of excise duty rebate after the abolition of the previous excise rebate added 34.5 cents per litre. Mr Mullins said continued: “Last month the CIE companies were given €36m by Minister for Transport and Tourism Leo Varadkar because of what he called a ‘perfect storm’ involving the high price of diesel. However, private operators are in a much more severe storm. We don’t get subsidies or free buses.” “Our international markets are down, our rates are down, yet diesel taxes keep rising. Now we’re told there will be a rise in excise in the next budget. We need the minister to fight our corner; something he has been reluctant to do so far.” Unlike their Irish counterparts, the CTTC also said British operators benefit from being able to reclaim the VAT on diesel.

Nottingham, Brighton & London top sustainability Campaign for Better Transport report shows sensible investment can cut congestion and improve local transport The Car Dependency Scorecard 2012, a report published by Campaign for Better Transport (CfBT), ranks London as the least car-dependent city in England, closely followed by Nottingham and Brighton and Hove. The worst city for dependency on the car was Wigan, with Peterborough and Colchester close behind. The report examined how dependent the public is on cars in the UK’s major cities, and shows how sensible investment in sustainable transport can give people more choice about how they travel and help reduce congestion. Data was used from 19 different sources to rank 26 cities across all regions in England. The first Car Dependency Scorecard, published in 2010, also placed Nottingham, London and Brighton in the top three. According to the CfBT, this is thanks to investment in transport and progressive travel plans. The cities which ranked bottom of the table showed poor accessibility to key services and high numbers using cars to commute to work. Milton Keynes, which came last in 2010, has also not improved its position as the cities lower in the table were not measured in the last scorecard. The report also reveals cities towards the bottom of the table are less likely to improve in the future. The report states their travel plans may

place too much emphasis on road infrastructure, cheap parking, and/ or placing new business parks and homes where they would generate additional car journeys and lack the foresight to suggest more costeffective ways to improve public transport to aid everyday journeys for their residents. The most improved city since 2010 was Southampton. It climbed five places overall to fifth, and it is claimed this is likely to be due to new partnerships between local councils and operators. In last year’s Scorecard it was found all the UK cities measured compared badly to their European neighbours on transport provision. UK cities performed badly due to poor air quality, high levels of congestion and, with the exception of Cardiff, the high cost of public transport.
Sian Berry, Sustainable Transport Campaigner for CfBT, said: “The cities which have topped our ranking show how good planning and investing in transport infrastructure can provide decent transport alternatives and reduce the number of people having to make every-day journeys by car. “Heavy investment in transport for the Olympics and Paralympics in London is already starting to show its impact with the capital moving up to top the ranking. But, local authorities need to realise the most cost-effective way to reduce dependence is to invest in cheaper, more-efficient public transport and build new developments that can be accessed by cycling and public transport and which reduce the need to travel, rather than throw money at expensive road plans that in reality fail to cut congestion.”
Brighton and Hove has consistently ranked well in the Car Dependency Scorecard by the Campaign for Better Transport Of these, 10 are to be equipped for mobility use with 21 Rescroft seats with integral three-point seat belts and space and fittings for two wheelchairs. The remaining seven will also have Rescroft belted seating and are to be used on school contracts and general service work. A further nine vehicles have been ordered by Dawson Rentals on behalf of its customer Britannia Parking of Bournemouth. These vehicles will be used to operate a
third party staff bus contract with a local employer. These 9.7-metre buses are also seat belted and have Mobitec destination equipment. Commenting on the ordersm Optare Sales Director John Horn said: “I’m delighted to win this business from two highly respected Optare customers. Along with many other orders this year for our Solo SR they prove what an unrivalled lead the model has in the midi bus sector.”
FairFuelUK renews call for fuel duty cut The RAC backed national FairFuelUK campaign is repeating its call for the UK Government to cut fuel duty, after France made a move to cut petrol and diesel prices. The French government announced extensive measures to lower the price of fuel which has reached a record €1.46 (£1.15). President Francois Hollande said he will work with fuel suppliers to bring an immediate reduction of six cents per litre to protect French consumers, farmers and producers from financial hardship. Quentin Willson, National Spokesman for FairFuelUK said: “We’re being embarrassed by the French. The UK has been in recession for ages, yet getting our government to recognise the damage to our economy of rising fuel prices has been as easy as translating Proust. “However, as soon as the French see their economy crashing, they act with speed to control the economic damage of expensive fuel. Our fuel costs are even higher than France’s yet we still do nothing to lower duty.” Peter Carroll, founder of FairFuelUK said: “In the CEBR (Centre for Economics and Business Research) Report we commissioned earlier this year, our findings suggest that a 2.5 pence reduction in fuel duty would result in the creation of thousands of jobs. Such a reduction, we estimate, would not result in any fiscal loss to the Government and our GDP would receive a boost of 0.32% within a year. The Government cannot keep ignoring this overwhelming evidence and the wishes of hundreds of thousands of FairFuelUK supporters. The French seem to have got it.” FairFuelUK is supported by over 300,000 members of the public, the RAC with its seven million members, the 20,000 haulage businesses in the RHA, FTA, the British Bank Aldermore and Palletline. briefly AUSTRALIA First Group has made the shortlist to operate 500 buses in Melbourne on a seven year contract. Also making the shortlist announced by Public Transport Victoria CEO Ian Dobbs were Keolis Downer Rail, National Bus Company (Aus), Transit Systems and Veolia Transport. First Group is planning to make its first foray into local bus operations in Australia. Whichever company wins the tender will operate about 30% of Melbourne’s bus network, including running 40 routes with 2500 services a day across the eastern suburbs, the four Doncaster Area Rapid Transit (DART) services, and 106 school-only services. The winning tender will also operate nine routes running in excess of 700 services each day in Melbourne’s western suburbs and south-eastern suburbs, plus 16 school-only services. Also included in the tender are the high frequency SmartBus Orbital routes, running 545 services each day in an archlike pattern around Melbourne’s outer suburb. Public Transport Victoria CEO Ian Dobbs said: “We are confident that the shortlisted group is representative of the best bus operators in the transport market.” CANADA The government of Ontario, has initiated the launch of the Niagara Falls Visitor Transportation System. Branded as WEGO the service officially began on August 20, 2012. WEGO offers an alternative to driving and will give visitors and locals a chance to hop on and explore Niagara Falls at their leisure, It is equipped with cutting edge technology and will make visiting Niagara Falls more convenient and enjoyable. The in-service launch of the buses is the first step towards the completion of the WEGO system. Current plans are for the system to be fully implemented in 2014 employing 27 fully accessible buses with intelligent transportation and fare collection systems. Eight existing Niagara Parks Peoplemover stations are to be upgraded; new pick-up and drop-off points will be established along with a storage and maintenance facility for the new buses. New infrastructure improvements are also planned. www.coachandbusweek.com

Munster receives its first hybrid buses Two articulated Mercedes-Benz Citaros will operate on the route which serves the city’s main tourist attraction GERMANY The German city of Münster, in Westphalia, has officially inaugurated its first hybrid bus route following the ceremonial handover of two Mercedes-Benz articulated 18m Citaro G BlueTec Hybrids to its municipal transport service. They are being deployed
primarily on high-demand and high-frequency routes, including a route running directly through the city centre across one of Münster’s main tourist attractions, the Prinzipalmarkt. High passenger density and frequent stop/ start is where the advantages of sustainable hybrid technology will be most apparent. Its ability to drive on electric power alone for substantial distances, without a diesel engine, means the Citaro G BlueTec Hybrids can glide

SNCF Voyages launches new coach services
The new SNCF Setras will operate links between Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and London
FRANCE SNCF, the French stateowned railway company launched a new business model at the end of July through the use of comfortable touring coaches – and acquired 26 Setra ComfortClass 400 S 416 GTHDs for the operation. They provide links between Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and London. The coaches are equipped with 48 Voyage Plus seats. Three seat pairs are mounted on tracking enabling them to be moved or removed to accommodate wheelchairs. A side-mounted passenger lift provides access for
almost noiselessly through the city’s historic centre. The varied topography of Münster, the historic old city and the high utilisation of the transport routes all offer ideal conditions to reap the benefits of advanced hybrid technology. Under electric-only mode the hybrid moves on to the following stops in just the same smooth, silent way, without the usual hum from the engine. The drive power is provided by four electric wheel hub motors which draw their power from what the manufacturer claims is one of the world’s largest lithium-ion batteries ever used in a mobile application. Battery power is regenerated from braking and, if required, can also be produced by a generator driven by a diesel engine which is relatively small for the vehicle class. The driving characteristics of the Citaro are governed by four electric motors which accelerate the 18m bus quickly and in almost total silence. With no gears passengers experience smooth, stepless acceleration. The wheel hub motors deliver a combined drive output of 320 kW, which is supplied by the battery or the generator running off the diesel engine. Under braking, the electric motors act as wheelchairs or disabled passengers via a dedicated door mounted just behind the nearside front wheel. The accessible features were built to meet specific requirements from SNCF. The slimline lift unit stows in its own locker space with a dedicated flap door and ensures maximum availability of luggage locker space. To enhance passenger safety SNCF also specified the inclusion of Setra’s Lane Assistant, Adaptive Cruise Control with Active Brake Assist and Front Collision Guard. In developing its new longdistance coach routes, the French state-owned company is venturing into completely new territory. It turned to Setra well before the project began to ensure its specification could be incorporated in a specifically developed vehicle

generators, converting brake energy into electric power for the battery If the battery needs additional electricity, the diesel engine starts up automatically to generate more current. The combustion engine in the hybrid is only half the size of the engine in a standard diesel bus, weighing just 450 kg compared to 1000 kg, and with a displacement of 4.8 litres compared to 12. At 160 kW, the engine’s output is roughly a third less. The lithium-ion battery system delivers a maximum of 240 kW and is relatively light, weighing under 350 kg. Compared to conventional battery systems, the ion technology battery has an impressive higher energy density, combined with a high storage capacity and a low own weight. Buses are the vital element in passenger transportation in Münster, not just a contributor to its environmental protection concept. It has no surface rail network and it disposed of its trams in 1954 and its trolleybuses in 1868. Since then, Munster has maintained a fleet of modern buses. Its current fleet of articulated buses meets the strict Euro 5 emission standard. With the addition of the two Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid vehicles, the city’s transport authority is keeping its promise to engage intensively with new technologies in the hybrid and electric vehicle fields. Each year, over 35 million passengers use the city’s public transport services. It operates 24 bus routes with a vehicle fleet of 174 buses. design - and be launched on schedule, within a year. Lothar Holder, Brand Spokesman for Setra Buses within EvoBus GmbH said: “I am very proud of the way in which we have been able to support SNCF by delivering a tailor-made concept, along with the flexibility and individual ideas needed.” Barbara Dalibard, a member of the SNCF Executive Board, expressed her gratitude for the way in which the companies had co-operated with each other right from the very beginning and for the effort and expertise which had been put into the project. She added: “The Setra coaches will allow us to offer our customers an extremely pleasant way of travelling with safety as our top priority.”

Daimler has secured orders for 520 new vehicles so far
Sport sparks Brazilian bus orders BRAZIL Major updating of bus fleets and transport infrastructure in Brazlian cities is being planned as the country prepares for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. Daimler Buses is already reaping the benefits having secured orders for 520 vehicles. Fortaleza in Northeastern Brazil, which is to host some World Cup games, has ordered 135 MercedesBenz citybuses with BlueTec 5 technology. A second major order comes from the public transport companies in Ribeirão Preto, which have ordered almost 390 MercedesBenz bus chassis. The new fleet, which will begin to operate within
the next months, is part of the local public transport concept aimed at improving traffic infrastructure. The concept also involves new bus routes and the creation of exclusive bus corridors along the city’s main avenues. “The companies chose our vehicles because of their stateof-the-art equipment, low fuel consumption, and high profitability. Our vehicles create maximum efficiency, which is well received by customers. This is also confirmed by our outstanding market position. We are currently providing 60% of Brazil´s city buses,” said Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses. With Daimler Buses already having achieved 7,000 new vehicle registrations in the first half of 2012 it has taken the lead in Brazil’s bus market with around a 50% share of vehicles in the urban and intercity bus segments weighing over 8.0 tons GVW.
COLUMBIA Volvo Buses has sold more than 120 bi-articulated chassis to be used on Transmilenio, the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system of Bogota, Colombia. The vehicles were ordered by local operator Consorcio Express S.A.S, which previously purchased 67 Volvo articulated and conventional chassis last year. Luís Carlos Pimenta, president of Volvo Bus Latin America, said: “This sale reinforces Volvo’s absolute leadership in BRT buses not just in Colombia, but throughout all of Latin America and displays the unmatchable quality and suitability of our vehicles for the system.
With this deal, Volvo reaches 75% share in Transmilenio. Of the new vehicles, 60 will be delivered by the end of this year and the remainder in early 2013. The chassis are model B340M bi-articulated high floor, with capacity for over 250 passengers and will circulate on the trunk axes of Transmilenio’s third expansion phase. Bogotá’s Transmilenio has over 100 bus stations and transports 1.6 million passengers in 266 districts every day. The new buses have SCR technology and are compliant with the Euro 5 emission standards.

RUSSIA Three red open-topped double-decker buses have started operating under City Sightseeing around the Kremlin as Moscow became the last European capital to introduce the tourist vehicles. City Sightseeing Worldwide has invested between 2m and 2.5m euros to start the service in 2012 in Russia, President Enrique Ybarra said. The three buses unveiled at a demonstration tour for guests and reporters cost about 150,000 euros each. After a period doing tours in Stockholm and Copenhagen, they were refitted in Germany before heading to Russia early this year. During a test period they ran on a 9km circuit taking in St. Basil’s Cathedral, Bolotnaya Ploshchad, Christ the Savior Cathedral, the Bolshoi Theater and Lubyanskaya Ploshchad, with English and Russian commentary. The 18 stops along the route will be marked with special signs, but they have not yet been installed. The buses began picking up paying tourists Saturday afternoon. Executives and officials were dismissive of concerns that Moscow’s notorious traffic might create problems. “It’s no different from Edinburgh, New York or Los Angeles,” said Iain Coupar, Head of Franchise at City Sightseeing. “These big cities experience traffic issues but they still manage to support an open-top tourist service.” Seville-based City Sightseeing’s move to Moscow was in line with the company’s strategy of expansion into the Middle East and Asia, said Ybarra, adding that St. Petersburg, Sochi and Minsk are destinations likely to be included soon. “There were a lot of problems in Moscow,” said City Sightseeing Russia president Sergei Lavrentiev. “Those agencies which needed to give their agreement did not understand that their agreement was necessary.” There are plans to add two more double-deckers to the Moscow fleet this year to service a total of three routes, all within the Garden Ring. The buses are open-topped, but in the winter they will be fitted with double-glazed windows and a proper roof. www.coachandbusweek.com

21st Century Group releases interim results The company predicts a stronger showing in second half of the year, with strong growth in several parts of the business 21st Century, supplier of CCTV and other monitoring systems to the public transport market, has released an interim report based upon the Group’s unaudited results for the six months to June 30, 2012. Total revenue for the six months was at £7.0m, compared to the £7.8m achieved in the first half of the prior year. However sales for the first six months of last year included £4.7m from a large one off contract with Keolis in Stockholm and the Group has achieved significant sales growth in other areas in the first half of the current year. Combined revenue from the Company’s three main UK customers (Arriva UK Bus, FirstGroup UK Bus and The GoAhead Group UK) was up by 80% at £5m (2011: £2.8m) in the first half of the year. At the end of June 2012, 21st Century announced that Arriva UK Bus had extended its preferred supplier contract for a further two years. The company has invested in international sales staff to support the expansion outside of the UK and in March 2012, the Board announced the award of a £3.3m contract to supply on board CCTV, passenger counting and maintenance within a multi-modal (bus, train and tram) transport
Continued investment boosts Optare Ongoing investment at Optare has seen £0.5m recently dedicated to expand its paint facilities and install upgraded CAD equipment at its Sherburn bus plant to meet projected demand for its products. system operated by Arriva in Stockholm. Under the terms, £2.7m of the contract value will be delivered in the current year of which £1.2m has been delivered in the first half. 21st Century also announced in May 2012 the award of a £1m contract by CrossCountry Trains. The contract has now commenced and most of the related income is expected to come through in the second half of the year. Sales of fuel saving product EcoManager continued to be value enhancing, with deployment in eight countries across Europe and major trials of EcoManager running with new customers in Europe and in the Middle East. Cash at bank stood at £4.2m at June 30, 2012, compared to a net debt
of £0.6m at June 30, 2011 and cash of £2.8m at 31 December 2011. Following the disposal of the Company’s legacy distribution businesses at the end of 2009, 21st Century marketed its underutilised head office property for sale from that time, completing the sale on January 6, 2012 for a cash consideration of £2,350,000. The net amount realised after costs was £2,292,000. Currently it is leasing back part of the site on a short term basis with a view to moving to more suitable premises in the second half of the current year. A return of capital of approximately £3.3m in cash, representing 3.5 pence per Ordinary Share was paid to shareholders in early July 2012. The 21st Century board said it will
21st Century’s customers include Arriva, FirstGroup and Go-Ahead Group has a ‘bake’ drying cycle of under 40 minutes. The existing booths are already being operated on a continuous three shift system but further capacity was needed to meet planned growth from 2013. Other recent changes to the plant layout include the settingup of a dedicated build area for electric vehicles. Improvements have also been made to a number of production processes, including increased use of off-line subassembly areas to support faster line speeds. A significant part of the investment was used to replace Optare’s existing mix of CAD
programs with a single system. Following an extensive review the company has chosen the SolidWorks 3D package from Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp. Optare Chief Technical Officer Glenn Saint said: “Following the consolidation of our design team down to a single site at Sherburn we had a mix of CAD systems. The decision to invest heavily in the SolidWorks system means in the future we can control our design processes more efficiently and enables us to link with design teams in Chennai, India, to benefit from their specialisms and to bring new products to market faster.”
consider a further distribution by way of dividend shortly after the year end. The firm said it has “a clear objective” in creating value for shareholders, through international partnerships in the road and rail markets. As well as providing a focused way forward for 21st Century in the roll out of our core CCTV technologies, momentum in EcoManager and passenger counting represent significant value drivers of the business. Jan G Holmstrom, Chairman said: “We are currently trading in line with management’s profit expectations. The full year profit expectation is weighted toward the second half of the year and, while the Group’s current order book and sales prospects support management’s expectations for the full year, achievement of these forecasts will depend upon a number of potential contracts being confirmed and fulfilled before the year end. “Regardless of this we expect profit for the current year will exceed what was achieved last year.” 21st Century announced separately that Nick Grimond has decided to resign as CEO. The board thanked him for his contribution over the period since the company repositioned itself from an in-car entertainment and security business to a public transport CCTV integrator. He will leave the company on September 28, 2012. Wilson Jennings, who has been an Executive Director with the Company for twelve years, will take over as MD of the Group’s main trading company 21st Century Technology Solutions Limited with immediate effect and as Group CEO from the date of Nick’s departure. CEO Jim Sumner described it as ‘a mark of confidence in the future of Optare.’ He said the strategic alliance forged with Ashok Leyland had also been a significant factor in the continuing development and growth of the business. “Ashok Leyland is helping to open up new markets and we are already seeing the benefit of our relationship with some exciting prospects in the Middle East. In the UK the large fleet operators now know we have the capacity to meet their volume requirements and we continue to establish ourselves as the clear leader in the market for electric buses,” he concluded.

The Arch Group, a Northumberland County Council-owned development company, has unveiled plans to invest £650,000 in improving an area of Blyth which includes the town’s bus station. The project aims to improve facilities for bus passengers and operators by making the area more pleasant, accessible and safe. It includes improved lighting and paving materials, upgraded access and road crossing points in the area, soft landscaping work and new street furniture. The project has attracted public and private sector support, with financial backing from the county council, the DfT, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arriva North East, the main operator and owner of the bus station site. Nick Knox, Arriva North East Area MD, said: “We are very pleased to be working with Northumberland Council in order to make improvements at Blyth Bus Station. The investment is part of our commitment to providing a safe, clean and comfortable environment for our customers.” County Council Leader Jeff Reid said: “This scheme is very welcome news for Blyth, and particularly for bus passengers and local people who use this area. I urge people to come along to see what is planned, and provide their input.” Work is scheduled to start this winter with the aim of completing the project next spring. Network Warrington has branded an empty shop unit within Warrington’s Golden Square development to showcase the range of money saving tickets..” MD David Squire explained: “We have forged a strong partnership with Golden Square, providing information on their events in our advertising, and they are reciprocating with promoting our value tickets within their publicity, it was a natural progression to brand a shop unit to promote our message to a wider audience. The unit is in a prominent location in the Old Market Square and will wear this branding for six months, the panels are interchangeable, allowing new messages to be applied when needed

changes to its timetables. The Arriva subsidiary says it has been forced to revise some of its routes following the latest re-tendering exercise by Stoke-onTrent City Council. The discontinued services include route 20 between Meir and Kidsgrove; the 19 between Hanley and Wedgwood Farm and route 48 between Longton and Goms Mill. Passengers who usually use the remaining six services which are being withdrawn, such as the 49 between Longton and Meir and the 81 Hanley to Abbey Hulton circular, will be served by buses on nearby routes which have been extended. In addition, Wardle Transport has lost tenders on six other services. These include route 249 Longton to Stone; the 490 Stone to Stafford and service 94A Newcastle to Audley. The changes came into effect on Sunday (September 2). However, the operator says passengers on its other routes will see improvements to services. Route 86 between Tunstall and Biddulph has been extended to Brown Lees and Biddulph. A new hourly service has been introduced in the daytime on route 47, between Longton and Langland Drive. Additional journeys have also been introduced, including a new evening service on the 41 between Birches Head and Clayton. A Wardle Transport spokesman said: “The changes are to be
introduced following the recent round of re-tendering of several local authority-supported services and as part of regular monitoring carried out by the business of its commercial local bus network.” Arriva Midlands Communications Manager Keith Myatt said: “We have worked with the councils to provide the new network of services – in particular the 41 service. This will provide an improved frequency daytime Monday to Saturday along with a new evening service. “Our X50 service also meets requests from residents in Draycott, Tean, Checkley and Doveridge who need to travel to Derby and the hospital there, Stoke-on-Trent for college and university, and Hanley.”

Eastleigh-based Bluestar is introducing a new service on September 30 with a £1m investment, linking Townhill Park, Bitterne Park and Southampton city centre. Three refurbished single-deck WiFi-enabled Volvo B7RLEs will operate on the new 16 route, running every 20 minutes Monday to Saturday daytimes and every 30 minutes in the evenings and Sunday daytime. Ed Wills, Operations Director, said eight additional drivers have been recruited and are now undergoing training for the expansion to their network. He added: “We have listened to the
growing number of customers who have requested a fast and reliable service between Townhill Park and the city centre and believe the time is right to emulate the successful formula we have applied to our other non-council subsidised routes. “Customers who use the route will also be able to use our online key smart card to pre -purchase their weekly or monthly travel or pay the driver in the traditional way.” So-called ‘talking bus stops’ have been introduced in Berkshire to help blind and visuallyimpaired passengers. The technology has been introduced by West Berkshire Council, working with Newbury & District and Reading Buses. Customers are issued with fobs which automatically trigger an announcement when they are near the bus stop. They will tell the user which stop they are at and when the next bus is due. Further information is available by pressing one of two fob buttons. The left button gives further information about the stop location and the right button announces predicted bus arrival times. James Freeman, Reading Transport CEO, told CBW: “West Berkshire Council has been very proactive and we are very supportive of this. The use of these devises is a really good way forward. “The RNIB, and more importantly Guide Dogs with their Taking Buses campaign, have done well with bringing up these issues and helping make buses fully accessible. This might be the way forward. “It’s just the sort of thing local authorities should be doing.” “In terms of improving the availability of information, Wokingham Council is considering something similar, to give customers access to real-time information on their smartphones. That’s just as exciting,” he added. David Cowdrey, Head of Campaigns at Guide Dogs, told CBW he welcomed the news, although said talking buses was still the most important issue. He added: “It’s brilliant this has been implemented, but talking buses is the key. “However, it’s great there are technological advances for providing information to customers.” He went on to explain that once onboard, blind and partially-sighted passengers would still find it hard to know when to alight without

First Bus has introduced a number of changes to its network in Bath and Wiltshire. Positive changes include a higher frequency between Bath city centre the city’s universities to meet demand. Also, the Bath Park and Ride services – from the Newbridge, Lansdown and Odd Down sites – will operate regularly on Sundays for the first time ever. Timetable changes have been made to routes 234, 236, 260 and 263, while the firm has reduced evening and the Sunday and Bank Holiday frequency on services 264 and 265. Simon Ford, Acting Regional Network Manager for First in the South West and Wales, said: “We are altering a number of our services from September 2, responding to
changes in demand and specifically boosting the frequency of buses where we believe there is the opportunity for growth. “The introduction of the new Bath Park and Ride timetable will be significant as for the first time buses will run regularly on Sundays throughout the year, giving shoppers and tourists the opportunity to get into the city centre quickly and easily. The improvements being made to the student services are also expected to be received well, with the new livery on route 18 (Bath University service) definitely expected to turn some heads. “Unfortunately not all the changes will be popular. As part of the efficiency drives within local government, which have led to funding reductions for bus services, some changes have had to be made to those journeys we provide on behalf of Wiltshire Council. These alterations are regrettable but in making them we have worked closely with the council and have done what we can to minimise the likely impact on our customers.”

First Scotland East bus drivers took on First management in a football match on September 2 to raise money for Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) which provides the only hospice services in Scotland for children with life-shortening conditions. The bus drivers were confident of a victory. “Our training is going well,” said Kenny Redmond, a driver at Livingston, before the match. “We’ve got a good squad, with some quality players. There is no way we’ll be taking it easy on the management – I’m expecting some crunching tackles!” George McNeil, a driver from Livingston Depot, is especially looking forward to the game and raising money for CHAS. He explained: “Unfortunately I lost my 17 year old son to cancer a few weeks ago. I will be forever grateful for the support CHAS provided during that time.” Scott Ferguson, Operations Manager at First Scotland East’s Livingston depot, said: “We’ve got a tremendous team spirit at Livingston and it’s great to see the staff rally together to support such a worthy cause. We’re hoping to raise in excess of £1,000. We might be the underdogs, but I’m quietly confident.”

young managers
A valuable experience Coach & Bus Week’s Alex Tyler talks to a pair of individuals who have experienced trent barton’s graduate training scheme and to well-known industry figure Alex Hornby, about their and the programme’s successes
T
he importance of succession and the progression of capable individuals are vital to the future of operators. Though many graduates heading out into the world do not harbour a secret love for buses, a goodly number have found success and satisfaction within the industry, predominantly thanks to graduate schemes. Talking to Ben Mansfield and Tom Morgan, both participants and products respectively of trent barton’s graduate programme, it’s clear the company encourages enthusiasm and knowledge in order to promote good customer service.
BEN MANSFIELD Having graduated from Hull University in June 2011, Ben Mansfield was looking for a career. “I found out about the scheme in the jobs section of a trade magazine. I followed it up with a bit of research about the company and decided I was going to apply and fortunately I got the job,” said Ben. “The scheme has been great and extremely varied. I will have covered almost every role or at least spent time in each department by the time I have completed the course.” trent barton places great importance on customer service, so encourages new recruits to experience the sharp end of the business, which means driving a bus; an intimidating prospect as Ben explained. “At first, the two month driving experience was quite daunting but after spending time with the www.coachandbusweek.com
TrentBartonYM.indd 20
in-house driving school - as well as with my mentor once I had passed my test - I felt comfortable with driving in service and giving the standard of customer service which trent barton is renowned for. “One occasion which springs to mind was when a young lad got on a red arrow service I was driving from Derby. He said he’d lost his zigzag day ticket while he was shopping. The look on his face when I told him to jump on board without being charged again will stay with me for a long time.” “The whole scheme, but especially the time I spent driving, has taught me not to lose focus on what customers really want; a reliable, regular service driven by a familiar, welcoming driver,” enthused Ben. “I hope if I keep those principles in mind throughout my career happy customers and a profitable company will be a consequence.” Asked about his current position,
Left: Often the most important learning curve is gaining a PCV. Right: Ben Mansfield said his time at trent barton has been challenging but hugely rewarding
Ben replied: “At the moment I am working in the company’s marketing department, I have helped with the launch of 18 new buses on a totally rebranded route, the threes. I catch the threes everyday to and from work and it’s great to see customers appreciate the investment into their service first hand.” “As well as the threes launch I have helped produce our first edition of trent barton life, a magazine for customers to read on a journey home or to the shops, designed to enhance their experience of travelling with the company,” he added. “On a day to day basis, I am constantly looking for new or upcoming events which may be of interest to our customers and making sure they know the best way to get to them is with us.” On his overall experience of the scheme, Ben said: “The time I have spent here has at times been challenging but overall hugely

rewarding - I hope it continues. I would recommend a graduate scheme in the industry to anybody just coming out of university as long as they are willing to work hard and get their hands dirty.” “I would like to take my training and use it to help the company continue to provide an excellent service,” he added. “Possibly starting work from one of our depots so I can further my understanding on how to make the frontline of our business successful.”
TOM MORGAN Tom was one of the first graduate trainees for the company and has clearly made a strong impression on the firm. Explaining how he joined trent barton, Tom said: “I was actually working for Norfolk Green at the time, on a similar graduate scheme, after Ben Colson had given me the opportunity to break into the industry. trent barton MD Jeff Counsell approached me about an opportunity working towards the bid to operate the current Nottingham tram network and future extensions. During the downtime, while the authority deliberated preferred bidder, I would undertake my training scheme in the bus operation. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Norfolk Green and learned an immense amount in a short space of time, the size of the organisation meant there was not going to be any long term opportunities and so I jumped at Jeff’s offer.” Tom continued: “The scheme itself was an amazing insight into each aspect of the company. trent barton professes to be the sum of its parts which is clear for all to see in the structure and colour of the company’s branded network. What’s interesting is that the same is true of the internal structure. Each department is focused to specialise in what it does, resulting in the utmost inter-departmental respect for each other. What this brings is differing opinions with sound rationale behind them, leading to passionate discussion which is always settled by what would most benefit our customers.” This was bolstered by the firm’s approach to recruitment, as Tom explained: “The example which stood out to me during my time as a graduate was in recruitment. Although it is cheaper to employ www.coachandbusweek.com

people with PSV licences, it didn’t always mean trent barton was getting the right guys for the job. Our recruitment team said we should be recruiting the very best people to serve our customers, regardless of prior driving experience. A natural affiliation with people is essential to ensure customers are always treated how we want them to be. That isn’t easy to teach. What we can teach people
“As for an average day? I don’t know there is such a thing. Just one of the great things about being at depot is the irregularity.” Tom Morgan
is how to drive a bus – so that’s exactly what we do.” “Interviews are aimed at finding people who enjoy interaction with others and understand the importance of quality customer service,” he added. ”Sometimes we forget to ask about driving...” In regards to what he learnt from the scheme, Tom said: “Aside from the scheme, it’s the culture at trent barton which has, to an extent, moulded the way I view situations. Rather than thinking of a reason not to do something, now I try to find reasons why we can. The company does not like to be governed by rules and regulations and allows every member of the organisation to make decisions for themselves. When you’re all working to make the customer as happy as possible how wrong can you go?” Currently, Tom is the Service Delivery Manager at the operator’s largest depot in Derby. ”This means everything the customer sees is my responsibility – bus presentation, punctuality, driver friendliness, route changes, marketing, customer opinion, local stakeholders, performance analysis, etc. Essentially everything we deliver,” explained Tom. “As for an average day? I don’t know if there is such a thing. Just one of the great things about being at depot is the irregularity. I normally aim to complete three tasks a day and I rarely get to finish my second before something else comes up. I, along with my team leaders, like to solve problems as we meet them rather than putting it into the ‘to do later’ pile.” “The one regular I have is my daily trip out,” he said. “No matter how busy I get I force myself out the office everyday to see what our customers see. This keeps me sane and reassures me of the quality of our driving teams, as I often watch our customers laugh and joke as they board the bus with the drivers they know so well.” Asked if he has enjoyed the experience, Tom replied: “If I hadn’t I wouldn’t still be here. I never thought I would be working in the bus industry. I’m certainly not someone who has always had a bus crush. I simply wanted to have the freedom to make decisions, trust my instincts and work alongside like-minded people. Commitment to deliver what our customers want – everything else falls into place after that. The graduate scheme has been the perfect

stepping stone to where I am now.” As for the future, Tom has a refreshingly open mind. “I’ve never been one for planning too far ahead,” he said. ”I think it’s important to keep moving forward rather than stand still, a view shared by the company. I will continue to put my ideas forward, no matter how silly they may sound, and drive us to be the very best version ourselves. Perhaps one day I will be in the position where we get it right - first time, every time… or maybe I really am dreaming.”
ALEX HORNBY Commercial Director Alex Hornby was full of praise for both Ben and Tom and he enthused over the importance of bringing quality individuals into the business. “Tom has matured into an important and valued member of our management team and is helping us up our game as Service Delivery Manager at our Derby depot and while Ben is still in the midst of his training, he’s showing promise and a great deal of understanding in why we do what we do,” he said. “I’d love to see them both go further, with the benefit of the grounding which trent barton and our people have offered them. Obviously, while we’ll encourage them, how far they push themselves is up to them. At the risk of me sounding like an old man, they’re both keen, young people, who have taught us new things and will hopefully bring further skills and benefits to our business and the industry as they progress.” When asked about the particulars of the scheme, Alex said: “We have built a 12-month programme which enables an experience of each of our departments with members of our teams. Often the most important learning curve is gaining a PCV licence and doing the job of a driver in two different depots. The year calls for a lot of ‘learning by doing’ and allows the freedom of opportunity to take ownership of certain projects. Within the year, regular reporting and discussions take place so we can monitor the individual’s progress and take on board any ideas for business development.” “I think it’s important to enable progression of keen individuals and for succession planning both for us and the industry, should the candidate reach the quality we’d www.coachandbusweek.com

expect,” he continued. ”With only two so far, we have high hopes but are still very new at this process, so we’ve made sure we appraise both them and the success of the scheme with an open mind.” Stressing the importance of the scheme for trent barton, Alex said: “It’s important to get an effective balance of recruiting new people, gaining a fresh pair of eyes to what we do and teach keen people how we do business so they can return their skills for our benefit, while ensuring we enable progression of
our own employees too.” Alex himself progressed through a graduate scheme within the industry, so understands the value of such programmes. He said: “I can only really compare trent barton’s scheme with my own time as a graduate management trainee at Stagecoach. I was very fortunate to progress through their programme which gave me many valuable experiences and lessons which will stay with me for my whole career – not least from the many great people at Stagecoach who taught me. “Elements of our scheme therefore take some inspiration from their structured approach. Given our ownership and scale, there will be obvious differences. I do hope our programme has offered similar, great things for both Tom and Ben.” As for the future of the scheme, it’s very much a learning curve, for all involved. “We’ll carry on learning as we go, using Tom’s and Ben’s experiences to guide us,” continued Alex. ”We did offer Ben more driving experience than we may have done previously, which I think was important. Experiencing life at the sharp end and meeting your customers is always valuable. “From our point of view, we’re pleased with the overall results and benefits brought to the business. I know both Tom and Ben have been well-received by our teams here.”

SUPPLIER PROFILE › QUARTIX
Right on track Coach & Bus Week’s Andrew Cream speaks to Andy Kirk from telematics provider Quartix about what it can provide the bus and coach industry
F
ounded on Valentine’s Day in 2001, Quartix is a vehicle tracking company with over 4,000 customers. Its unique, own-designed tracking system has been installed in more than 55,000 vehicles, from ambulances to government vehicles to buses and coaches. The Quartix system offers a wide range of features including live tracking and alerts, as well as fleet management reporting. Andy Kirk, Sales and Marketing Director, explained the benefits of Quartix’s telematics system and how the business has grown and developed over its 11 years. “When we started, we were the very first UK company to provide 100% web-based solutions in the telematics market,” Andy explained. And since its inception, Quartix, which is wholly owned by its founding members, seems to have been sticking to its innovative blueprints. Andy continued: “We are unique as we design the whole system, from what goes in the vehicle to the software. It’s all our own

intellectual property so we have complete control.” As Sales and Marketing Director, Andy’s role is very varied and includes developing marketing strategies and implementing them, managing the sales teams, logistics, product installation, aftersales support and invoicing.
Benefits to the industry “For coach and bus operators, knowing where their vehicles are at any point in time, including historically, is invaluable

information,” Andy said. “Not only that, but how the vehicles are being driven, whether they are reaching stops on time and how long they are at stops is all really helpful for operators. “In short, our system makes companies more efficient and it helps their customers receive better service.” Andy also explained how coach companies can specifically benefit from installing Quartix’s telematics. “Coach operators can allow their customers to access the system. They are given log-in details which they can forward to people meeting the coach. If they can see what time it will arrive it helps give peace of mind, especially if the coach is carrying children or elderly relatives.” The firm has spent a lot of time and money developing its DriverStyle module, which was first unveiled last year. Andy described how Quartix’s differs from other similar systems: “Driver-Style doesn’t link in with CAN bus so customers can determine the driving style of different vehicle types, makes and models. Companies can compare drivers and coaches. This is impossible to do on a CAN bus-linked system across different models.” It also means the system is remotely configurable and does not need vehicle manufacturers’ approvals. The company states that, by having more accurate, vehiclespecific data, a company can quickly identify where action needs to be taken, such as with driver training. Like other similar systems, Quartix’s customers can ascertain whether drivers are accelerating or breaking too hard which leads to higher fuel costs. Andy

Case Study 1: Alton Towers
After reviewing the market, Alton Towers resort opted for the Quartix system to track its 12 vehicle fleet. The Quartix system offered driver style monitoring and flexible 12 month contracts. Chris Richbell, Transport Manager, was also happy to move away from the thirdparty leasing they experienced in the past: “Direct rental made it attractive, and the cost is great. The important thing for us is delivering the best customer service possible.” The transportation team check the live tracking feature throughout the day so they can inform guests where vehicles are at any time, and be a step ahead if the drivers ever find themselves in slow traffic. Daily reports also enable them to see each vehicle’s activity in clear and concise tables, whilst Driver ID tags identify who is driving each vehicle at all times. As an important influence in the community, Alton Towers is also dedicated to keeping its local villages and roads safe. “We’re big on safety,” said Chris. “It is clear to us that using the Driver-Style feature has been a deterrent for speeding.” The built-in monitor analyses driving style in terms of acceleration, braking and speeding, with no connection needed to the vehicle CAN bus. Driving well, safely and within the law is a fundamental part of being in the Alton Towers Transport team, which is why Chris likes to keep an eye on the quality of driving from day to day. “The Quartix system obviously helps us offer a better service externally, but also helps with discipline internally if needs be,” Chris added. “We are going to start exploring how we can use the other functions available on the system, like checking the mileage which we don’t do enough of now.” Alton Towers also uses the Quartix package with its minibus fleet to monitor the picking up of workers. The company has a policy whereby if the minibus doesn’t show up after a certain period of time, workers can go home and still get paid. Using Quartix’s telematics technology, Alton Towers management can verify what time the minibus arrived - early, late or not at all. www.coachandbusweek.com

added: “Driver-Style can help bring a significant cut in operation costs. Harsh braking not only wastes fuel and increases servicing costs but is also known to be a driving style which leads to an increased risk of accidents. “You can actually also establish customers’ experience of being on the coach.” Quartix states that up to 15% fuel savings can typically be achieved by eliminating such driver behaviour. The module uses a combination of GPS data and the sensitive ‘black box’ style monitoring built into the Quartix telematics device. Quartix’s system is also used by larger bus and coach operators on their support vehicles. Arriva, for example, has the system installed on its vehicles which drop drivers off at different stops.
Geofencing
Quartix’s programme is web-based and includes features such as live tracking, daily, weekly and monthly reports, geofencing alerts, speed charts and utilisation reports. Andy was able to explain geofencing in basic terms, and how it relates to Quartix. “Geofencing is like an imaginary line on a map,” he said. “It can outline prohibited or mandatory zones, or named places like bus stops. When vehicles cross a geofencing boundary, our system can send out a message.” The technology used for geofencing can actually be applied in a number of different circumstances. The company was working with a university on a scheme whereby at night, a message would be sent to students when the bus was close to the stop. This would ensure students weren’t waiting around in the dark and cold, keeping them safe inside. Unfortunately due to funding the project didn’t go ahead, but it highlights the system’s potential. Another more obvious way geofencing can be utilised is in relation to London’s congestion zone. If a coach drives into the zone, operators can make sure they pay the charge.
Why Quartix?
Quartix prides itself on being easyto-use. “Our system is all point and click,” Andy explained. “It’s very intuitive and the reason it is easy-touse is everything on the system has been developed with customers. It’s very focused and meaningful as it’s designed by the people who www.coachandbusweek.com

Left: Alton Towers uses Quartix’s programme to track its 12-vehicle fleet. operate fleets.” He continued: “The product is very very robust. We design a huge amount of safeguards into the system.” If there are any problems though, there is support for customers. “We are renowned for out aftersales support,” said Andy. “Customers have direct access to our aftersales support team with direct lines – they don’t have to ring reception.” Another benefit from choosing Quartix as the supplier for a telematics system is that customers don’t have to be signed into long term contracts. Andy said: “Other companies try to tie people into three, four or five-year contracts with third party finance. “Our contract operates on a rolling month by month basis after the initial 12 months. Customers can make sure they are getting what they want from the system. “The beauty of that is, if you take out a third party lease you can’t

Customer feedback: “We find the Quartix system extremely beneficial. We need to exercise tight control on fuel costs, which are our biggest outgoings, so the reports on fuel consumption are very useful... We also know where our buses are at all times which means we can direct our drivers if they get lost, and therefore cut down on unnecessary mileage.” Richard Bradford owner of Bradfords Coaches & Minibus Hire
get out of it. But with us, after the 12 months you can get out at any point. “That’s a very strong indicator of financial strength and the strength of our aftersales support.”
Future plans
It’s clear from talking to Andy that Quartix is a forward-thinking business. The company listens to its customers and makes changes based on their suggestions and needs. Andy said: “This month we are realising a new interface for the program. We are just beginning trials with customers at the moment. “The next module we are producing is to do with automated crash alerts. It should be out in Quarter 1 of next year.” Quartix’s current clients can still benefit from any upgrades. Andy explained: “The system is completely automated so any upgrades are remotely uploaded overnight. Any software upgrades are included in the service. “Our system is continually upgraded. We do three or four significant upgrades in a year, depending on customer demand.”

Bus and coach operators can benefit from a number of reports and statistics to help improve and alter driver style.
Case Study 2: Toilets+
Quartix’s real-time system is saving Toilets+ as much as £400 per month in fuel costs, cutting engine-idling times throughout its 40-vehicle fleet. Managing Director Mick Bowman said: “Through the system we discovered some staff were reaching a site and leaving their vehicle’s engine running, often for very long periods. In fact, they are required to switch off and remove the ignition key on arrival.” Currently, Toilets+ has 32 of its vehicles – mainly Mercedes Sprinter vans – equipped with the Quartix InfoPlus option, and plans to equip the remainder over coming months. InfoPlus’s real-time benefits include one-minute vehicle updates, tailored daily and weekly management reports, real-time geofencing alerts, speeding and driver behaviour reports, a vehicle route replay facility, a fleet management organiser, a system configuration control and Google Maps with satellite view. “We also use the Quartix service to check drivers’ start and finish times to aid the monthly payroll. It is helpful for monitoring the bill from TfL for congestion charges as mistakes can be made,” Mr Bowman said. Toilets+ first approached Quartix six years ago, following a very unhappy experience with a major telematics provider, now no longer trading. Mick Bowman explained: “We like Quartix’s transparent pricing and approach and have always found the system reliable and easy to use. Furthermore, Quartix’s aftersales service is extremely good.” Andy Kirk said: “Toilets+ is a highly professional organisation and we are pleased to know our telematics system is playing an important role in its continuing success. “We look forward to working with Mick Bowman and his team for many years to come.”
“The Quartix tracker system has been an extremely useful tool for us in monitoring driving standards and raising our staff’s awareness of how defensive driving techniques are resulting in lower fuel consumption.” Steve Cliffe Assistant Operations Manager, Arriva North West

It was delivered to Barry’s coaches in March and is being used on a wide range of private charters and excursions. Commenting on the new coach, Graham Newsam, Director of Barry’s Coaches, said: “We’ve run many Irizars over the years which have been great for us. We were attracted to the option of the DAF running gear on this occasion and look forward to running it in our fleet alongside our other Irizars.”
“We had a Solo on the route before and it racked up a lot of mileage so it was time to replace. We are generally happy with Optare and there have been no problems at all with the new model.” “Another reason why we went with the Solo is because there is a canopy outside one of the hospitals, meaning we are restricted on size,” Richard continued. “So this model was the best option.” The vehicle was introduced in the middle of August. THE BIG PICTURE
This vehicle was seen by Coach & Bus Week’s Andrew Cream at Arriva Midlands’ Shrewsbury depot official opening on July 19. The Midland Red NBC 319 Leyland Leopard with Marshall bodywork was on show alongside a Midland Red LD8 (SHA 431) and a Midland Red Plaxton-bodied S23 (UHA 956H). The bus seen here started life at Ludlow depot in 1974, before spending time at Worcester, Tamworth and Bromsgrove. It moved to Midland Red West at its formation in September 1981. It was withdrawn in June 1990. West Midland Sea Angling Club then took ownership of the bus in exchange for a Leopard LS18. The vehicle has since been acquired by Paul Yarsley of Stourbridge for preservation. It was repainted into white and red Midland Red DP livery in July 2006.

s fuel costs rise, coach and bus operators look to manufacturers and suppliers to soften the blow with more economic drivelines. Torn between a choice of two, an operator looking to buy a new coach or bus will, more often than not, side with the one promising the better mpg. Likewise, when giving a vehicle a second or third life, be that with an engine, exhaust system or transmission upgrade, products and services promising more economic operation and repair are big attractions for operators.
Hindle Transmissions
Power and Drive This week’s Essential Guide looks at suppliers of bus and coach driveline components and services. The companies provide a selection of engines and transmissions, as well as digital technology designed to monitor and report on the condition of the vehicle
Hindle Transmissions, a trading division of the Hindle Group Ltd, was established in 1930 and is an independent re-manufacturer, focusing firmly on the bus, truck and off highway transmission market. Hindle Transmissions remanufactures a variety of transmissions, including ZF, Allison, Voith, plus a range of axles and differentials. Hindle’s staff have a wealth of experience in the complete overhaul of the above units and offer them throughout the UK on a service exchange and cost of repair basis. Each transmission is subjected to the same rigorous strip, inspection and rebuild process as expected by the original manufacturer. Hindle’s commitment to quality is shown with ISO 9001:2008 approval and its close relationship with customers, OE Manufacturers and their dealers. With a fleet of service support vehicles, dedicated service engineers and the latest in computerised diagnostic equipment, the Hindle Transmissions service team is ready to attend to anything from a simple electrical fault to a complete transmission replacement. A well-stocked central distribution centre ensures most of the common specification transmission units are available off the shelf for immediate despatch. Hindle Group says it aims to remain at the forefront of transmission remanufacturing and is committed to the creation of extraordinary customer satisfaction. T: 01274 756120 W: www.hindlereman.com

VOITH TURBO Voith’s DIWA823 midibus automatic transmission technology is becoming more widespread in UK applications thanks to its exclusive inclusion in the Wrightbus Streetlite – both wheel back and wheel forward versions. The same unit is also available as an option in ADL Enviro200s and is the preferred option for Stagecoach. For heavier full-sized single deck buses or double deckers, Voith’s larger DIWA 5 is the most recent development and like the 823 model offers high reliability and therefore low operating costs. In addition to integrated diagnostics capability, through Voith’s ALADIN system, these transmission systems can now benefit from SensoTop technology which allows them to adjust to driving styles and local topography in order to achieve higher levels of efficiency. SensoTop is a gear-shifting programme which allows all
EG.Driveline.indd 35
A cutaway view of Voith’s DIWA automatic gearbox gear-shifting points to be adapted automatically to the prevailing route and current load condition. The software continually monitors and manages all the transmission’s functions, the load on those systems, demand from the driver etc. An acceleration-
dependent gear-shifting program (BASP) monitors a simple and maintenance-free topography sensor in the electronic control unit. This combination quickly and accurately provides the information needed for the stepless adaptation of the gear-shifting
speeds to the topography. Voith believes the system has potential for reducing fuel consumption by a further 7%. In order to save more fuel, DIWA transmissions also feature ANS which automatically shifts into neutral when the bus is at standstill. With the development of the topography-dependent gearshifting program SensoTop, Voith is taking one significant step further: under consideration of the load condition, SensoTop optimally adapts the gear-shifting speeds to the prevailing topography – on ascending routes to precisely the power needed by the driver, on descending routes to the technically possible minimum. This is indeed an area, where potentials can be opened up that had previously been closed to existing gear-shifting programs. Another feature available from Voith is the transmission monitoring system DIWA “Smartnet.” The DIWA Smartnet

incorporates an additional hardware module connected as an independent unit to the diagnosis interface of the transmission control unit. Regular data transmission via GPRS to an internet server allows standardised data evaluation providing an overview of the transmissions condition and operating conditions. The ‘Smartnet’ system can provide SMS messages to the field service team of any fault codes registered in the transmission ECU and allow for early intervention. The key to the system is to provide a preventative maintenance approach to transmission operation thus reducing operating costs. The operational data for the bus or coach is also captured and a complete overview of the time share in each gear, operating temperature, time at standstill and driver behaviour are just some of the features available for interrogation within the system. DIWA SmartNet is already in
use in daily operation in more than 1200 buses in RTA Dubai, DOT Abu Dhabi. Operators in Spain, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, UK, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Czech and the UK are currently being developed. At Voiths workshop in Croydon they continue to provide a complete service exchange program. Using 100% OEM parts and incorporating all the latest upgrades and modifications. Every transmission is built and tested by fully trained Voith technicians, and supported in the field by our experienced mobile service team who provide on site diagnosis and repair as well as a remove and refit service for exchange transmissions. Voith will be showcasing their new Diwa.6 automatic transmission at Euro Bus Expo. Visit them on stand number 5/B 53.

ZF Transmissions With more than 14,000 units in service, ZF’s Ecomat remains the most widely used fully automatic powershift transmission in the British bus and coach market. However, as the power output of coaches in the UK has gradually increased, this has necessitated a move from powershift automatics to Automated Mechanical Transmissions (AMTs) with high torque capacity such as ZF’s popular AS-Tronic. Despite this trend, there is a resurgence in demand for conventional automatics in other specialist coaching applications. In particular, torque convertor powershift autos are better suited than dry clutch AMTs to commuter and city tour operations, where heavy traffic congestion is encountered. To meet this demand, ZF offers its Ecolife six-
Voith’s DIWA823 is the standard fit for the Wrightbus Streetlite
speed torque convertor automatic transmission for coach applications up to at least 2,100 Nm. Around 2,000 units are currently in service with well-known operators, in applications including the ADL Enviro 400, Mercedes Tourismo and Citaro and Volvo B9TL and B7RLE. To support OEM warranty schemes, ZF Services UK has now established remanufacturing capability for Ecomat 2, Ecomat 2Plus, Ecomat 4 and Ecolife transmissions. The service also satisfies the needs of the commercial aftermarket as vehicles progressively leave warranty, extending the availability of these transmissions well into the future. Remanufacturing enables the improvement of long-term operational reliability, a reduction in whole life costs and brings environmental benefits. Genuine ZF parts are used throughout, by technicians trained by the ZF factory in failure diagnostics, component inspection, assembly
and testing. During remanufacturing, ZF factory-trained technicians completely strip and inspect the transmission, assess and rectify the cause of failure, then repair any consequential damage. The unit is rebuilt using genuine ZF parts and updated using the latest ZF solutions to known product concerns, before being tested for correct operation of mechanical and electronics systems. This thoroughness of overhaul during remanufacturing reduces the risk of repeat failures to a minimum and improves longterm operational reliability, which ultimately lowers cost of ownership. The process also has sound ecological credentials: where available, recycled genuine parts are used, carefully assessed against ZF design and performance tolerances to ensure that quality and reliability are not compromised. This helps reduce the price of replacement units and supports customers in

meeting their own environmental targets. To simplify replacement and avoid delays due to missing parts, each transmission is delivered ‘fullydressed’ with all ancillaries fitted, ready to run. The unit is supplied with a full warranty, which provides for a replacement transmission in the unlikely event of premature failure. This is valid throughout the pan-European ZF service network, a benefit particularly valued by coach operators running services to continental Europe. This has had a high profile in the UK bus industry since Stagecoach adopted it nationally in 2005, followed earlier this year by East Yorkshire Motor Services. EYMS Chairman Peter Shipp said: “In the present very difficult financial climate, we need to save money wherever we can and fuel is now such a big proportion of our total costs that this is a high priority area for us. Based on the successful 12-month trial we are confident Envirox will deliver a considerable fuel saving.” More recently, three coach and bus firms who are well known for their high standards of operation have embarked on commercial rials of Envirox – namely Travel de Courcey, Chalkwell Coach Hire and Reading Transport. All three operators are targeting an average fuel saving of 4%. Clive Eglinton, Chalkwell MD said: “Energenics has been very helpful and Envirox wasn’t a hard sell. However, at higher dose levels the active cerium oxide nanocatalyst in Envirox will perform as an effective Fuel Borne Catalyst (FBC) in assisting the regeneration of Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs). It works by significantly lowering the temperature the exhaust gases need to reach to burn off the trapped soot particles in the DPF. Operational problems with DPFs related to premature soot blocking continue to be reported in industry circles, particularly in slow urban driving cycles such as London traffic where the exhaust gases do not reach the necessary temperature for a sufficient part of the operating cycle to regenerate the filter. Coach operators who have purchased DPFs to comply with the latest requirements of the London Low Emission Zone can be in a difficult situation. Even in the absence of actual blocking problems, fuel economy tends to worsen because the engine has to work against the back pressure caused by soot build up in the exhaust system. Envirox DPF Assist is a new fuel treatment for workshop application, developed specifically to address these issues. As well as the core nanocatalyst it includes a strong dose of the detergent additive chemistry used by premium fuel retailers to clean fuel injectors and preserve optimal spray patterns. It is supplied in a convenient 500ml bottle with a 25ml dispensing chamber which is well matched to the dosing recommendations. As such it is affordable and can be used to selectively treat the vehicles in the fleet which will benefit most. There are two main ways of using it; ■ On an occasional basis to assist with a DPF that is already showing signs of blockage – this requires 2 x 25ml measures for 50 litres of diesel fuel. ■ On an ongoing basis to combat potential future blockages and achieve enhanced fuel economy – this requires one 25ml measure for 50 litres of diesel fuel. As the producer of the additive technology, Energenics can offer it in this concentrated form which represents excellent value to operators. Several DPF Cleaner products have begun to appear in www.coachandbusweek.com
EG.Driveline.indd 42
Allison’s T280R remains a popular choice for bus operators the workshop and retail trade but these are ‘single shot’ treatments for one tank where the active FBC ingredient has been diluted with solvent. If used all the time, one 500 ml bottle of Envirox DPF Assist will treat 1000 litres of diesel and more than pay for itself by delivering fuel savings approximately equal to double its cost. ALLISON TRANSMISSION Recently, Allison Transmission provided technical assistance to Veolia Transport, which is operating six dual cabin Contrac buses at the popular tourist destination that is the Mont-Saint-Michel monastery in Normandy, France. Each of these unique vehicles has two driver cabins while a special gear module reverses the direction of transmission output so the buses can change direction without turning. As of this year, parking is limited to the mainland and visitors must instead access the small island by shuttle bus. What sounds simple enough presented a huge technical challenge for bus manufacturer, Contrac GmbH of Wiesbaden, Germany, because there was insufficient turning space. Then came the idea for a unique dual cabin bus. The Cobus DES named “Le Passeur” is based on the Cobus 2500, a 12.3m long airport bus, which is equipped with an Allison 2100 fully automatic transmission. Two fully functional driver cabins with one common drivetrain allow
two-directional operation. Allison’s main German distributor, DGS, played a major role in creating the innovative drive solution. It developed a special reversing drop-box module, which is directly mounted on the Allison automatic transmission and reverses vehicle direction without affecting the drivability. This compact and short design had a minimal impact on overall driveline length. Direction change occurs when the vehicle is at a standstill. The drop-box is engaged pneumatically from the driver’s cabin in use. The new reversing transmission can be combined with any Allison 1000 and 2000 Series fully automatic transmission. The Allison 2100 transmission in “Le Passeur” is designed for vehicles up to 13,600kg gross weight and engines rated up to 300 HP (224 kW). The advanced electronic controls offer diagnostics features while providing excellent shift quality, improved passenger comfort, and increased fuel efficiency. The maximum speed of the shuttle buses at Mont-SaintMichel is 70km/h, but they are electronically regulated down to 50km/h; while on the bridge they may only drive at a speed of 25km/h. Over the next 12 years, each vehicle is expected to cover about 600,000km exclusively in shuttle service. The shuttle buses also run on public streets, so it was necessary to design bow and stern in such a way that the driving direction is immediately recognizable for all road users. Thanks to the special construction, reflectors can automatically be switched between
white and red at direction changes, and the exterior rear-view mirrors can be retracted. The Contrac dual cabin bus is extraordinary in many ways. It’s technically advanced because of the two-directional operation and the huge space for up to 90 passengers. Aesthetically its look with maritime outside cladding made out of 7 mm teakwood is unique. Further applications are planned for these buses with requests from bus operators in Southern France, who want to operate such a vehicle with an open or fully glazed roof for city tours. Also there is interest in the two-directional vehicles for substitute transportation at construction sites with blind alleys. On September 26, Allison Transmission and partner organisations from across the commercial vehicle sector are inviting anyone interested in fuel efficiency – from fleet and maintenance engineers to finance and operations directors – to attend a new Fuel Efficiency Forum at Millbrook Proving Ground, Bedfordshire. Companies behind current and future developments in lubricants, engines and transmissions, aerodynamics, braking systems, and other technologies, will present a number of seminars all geared towards helping improve fuel efficiency. Speakers include Daniel Geis-Esser, Research and Development Manager from KnorrBremse, Anthony Sale, Senior Engineer, Powertrain, at Millbrook, and Allison Transmission’s UK Area Manager, Riccardo Sardelli. To demonstrate the potential impact of current developments on fuel efficiency, attendees will be able to ride and drive a variety of Allison fully automatic transmissionequipped buses including an Optare Tempo hybrid bus. The event is the first of its kind in the UK. Hosted by Allison Transmission, it is supported by Bridgestone UK, Fiat Powertrain, Knorr-Bremse Systems, Exxon Mobil, Millbrook and Mitchell Powersystems. Industry members interested in registering for the last remaining places should contact Allison Transmission via the e-mail address provided. Monday James here again – Gareth is enjoying a well-earned week away touring his homeland. Bank Holiday means we’re spared the Monday press day this week and instead I have my Grandfather’s 80th birthday party to attend. It’s a surprise party (though we don’t make it too much of a surprise at that age) and many people from my family attend who I haven’t seen in a number of years. Grandad ends up with enough bottles of whiskey to fill a bar and a number of matching ‘you’re 80’ birthday cards and thoroughly enjoys the day. If you’ve ever driven a coach for a living, you’ll know how irritating it can be when another type of vehicle takes up a space in a coach park. Privately at least, it’s the same sort of feeling as seeing able-bodied car drivers in disabled bays – or lone motorists in spaces dedicated to parents with children. Perhaps that’s one of our own faults as an industry – we’re not vociferous enough sometimes. Alas, this scene was caught on camera by Editor Gareth Evans while on a visit to Anglesey on Friday (August 31). With his mum and fiancée inside the adjacent James Pringle Weavers, aka Edinburgh Woollen Mill at Llanfair PG, Gareth used the opportunity to snap some stock pics for CBW. Having photographed an immaculate Alfa Travel Plaxton in one of the numerous coach bays, this 60-plate VW Polo pulled up alongside the coach. Two apparently able-bodied ladies sprinted into the shop. Perhaps we should offer this pic to a well-known opticians for its famous ‘Should have gone to Specsavers’ ad…
Ring it up! A man has been reunited with his wedding ring after accidentally paying his bus fare with it – The Scotsman reported. Cardiac psychologist Murray Jummun was on First’s route 66 after finishing work at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Clydebank when he realised he had placed his platinum wedding ring into the fare box. He had taken the ring off to gel his hair and left it in
Dilbert
his pocket with some spare change. The 40-year-old, who has been married to wife Suzanne for 10 years, was anxious to get it back and contacted First Glasgow’s lost property service, based in Victoria Road in the south side of the city. The company’s security team got involved and liaised with the unknown ticket machine supplier and the piece of jewellery was retrieved. Mr Jummun said: “The bus driver was really helpful, she told me the fleet number and how to contact
customer services. The following day I received a call from First at 0830hrs saying they had retrieved my ring. “The security team brought it to me at work. I was so happy to get my ring back. I’d like to thank First Glasgow’s lost property service and the security team.” Alan Pert, First Glasgow’s Security Manager, said: “In special circumstances such as this, we get involved to locate misplaced wedding rings in cash boxes. It doesn’t happen very often.”
Tuesday Work from home in the morning as decorators are finally over repainting a wall after several months of pestering the letting agent about it. I still haven’t quite got my brain in gear after a weekend spent largely grinding out new PC game Guild Wars 2 with my housemate, so manage to leave the office without almost everything I need for the next day. Wednesday Head down to Heathrow to visit Tellings Golden Miller for the upcoming second part of the Arriva super feature. Managing Director Paul Churchman is quite a character and more than happy to say it like it is. This also means we get through everything much more quickly than I expect and I still have time to return to Peterborough and work on the current issue in the office. Thursday A busy day in the office writing. It’s Subscriptions Manager Kirstyn’s last day with the company. She just about manages to hold back the tears when she’s given her leaving card and presents, not to mention a number of good luck hugs. We will miss her infectious smile in the office. Friday A hectic day in the office trying to finish off as many pages as possible prior to the weekend, and in readiness for Monday. www.coachandbusweek.com

Deering joined Torotrak in 2006. He has developed strong personal relationships with Torotrak’s major clients and licensees and is leading Torotrak’s current business development activities. Torotrak has also appointed Gary Wilson as Group Director - Engineering & Programme Delivery, bringing additional expertise in project delivery and growth management. Prior to joining in June 2012, Gary was the director responsible for implementing global growth in engineering capability for Delphi Diesel Systems Aftermarket, part of the global vehicle technology supplier Delphi Automotive. He has also held senior positions at Land Rover and at engineering consultancies, delivering high-value powertrain programmes. At Roush Technologies, he led European engineering activities across a range of a sectors including cars, commercial vehicles and defence, increasing profitable engineering services income fourfold. A search process has commenced for the role of Finance Director and shareholders will be updated on this in due course. Dick Elsy said: “It’s not an easy decision to leave at such an exciting time when our plans are really starting to deliver, but I’ve been asked to take a leading role in the Government’s aims to rebalance the UK economy towards high value manufacturing and it’s something I want to do on a personal level. I am leaving Torotrak in good shape, in good hands and with very clear direction. Jeremy and I have worked well together for many years and I know that he is ideally placed to lead the next stage of Torotrak’s route to full commercial roll-out.”
