burden. A £100 �ine for a 50-seater coach is £2 a head on a day hire, does not sound overly onerous on the face of it, but in reality, it’s an exceedingly bitter pill to swallow for coach operators. It may prove cheaper for school groups to use public transport than to hire a coach. For tourists, a London coach trip will become that much more expensive. Coupled with the dreaded Cycle Superhighways taking away coach parking bays, it’s only another reason why operators could think twice about sending a coach to the capital. TfL readily admits that a mainstream retro�it solution to achieve the Euro 6 does not exist currently, but says it is a fast-developing area and it is possible a solution may be found for heavier vehicles in the next few years. “Such a solution would be suitable for Euro 5 vehicles only and would not work on older vehicles.” For some operators, the current LEZ remains an irritation, but for others running modern �leets, it helps to keep ‘old tat’ off the streets. Might we see such an attitude change in due course? Oh, and will the ULEZ be enforced for coaches from overseas? Is this something to brought up at the new exit checks – assuming they’re still in place and/or settled down by 2020? Meanwhile, aircraft go churning out the clag overhead...

ith the con�irmation of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) for London from 2020, it would appear we’re on cusp of an electric single-deck bus revolution. That’s what Transport for London (TfL) would like us to think and the announcement seems to represent a real opportunity for manufacturer(s). TfL appears to remain committed to hybrid for double-deck. It’s interesting that it is seeking government funding but then says it will be a phased introduction as tenders fall due for renewal. However, I can’t help but wonder why TfL isn’t looking at CNG and biomethane in particular? The engine technology is proven, we have good gas infrastructure and thanks to anaerobic digestion, a potential energy source that will never run out. Gas may not be zero-tail pipe emission like electric, but how was that electricity produced? The Mayor of London is not introduction the ULEZ for the sake of it – it’s being done in an attempt to fend off annual €300m �ines that the European Commission would like to impose against the UK government for breaching limits for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in 16 of 43 zones around the country. That includes Greater London and the South East. For some coach operators, �ive years’ notice will be suf�icient, but for others, particularly those based in or on the edge of London who go into the city daily, it will be an expensive

Boris Johnson gives go-ahead for London ULEZ Non-compliant coaches and buses will be charged £100 to enter the area from September 7, 2020 The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has con�irmed the introduction of the world’s �irst Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) The ULEZ will launch in central London on September 7, 2020. It will require vehicles travelling in the Congestion Charge Zone of central London to meet new emission standards at all times or pay a daily charge. An extra £25m from Government will be used to provide grants to help taxi drivers cover the cost of upgrading, in addition to £40m already committed to assist taxi drivers whose vehicles would be affected by tighter age limits. By 2020, in addition to the ULEZ, Transport for London (TfL) has committed to ensuring that all 300 single-decker buses operating in central London are zero-emission (electric) and all 3,000 doubledecker buses are hybrid, including 800 New Routemasters. It is claimed the full ULEZ package will halve emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM10) from vehicle exhausts in central London. More than 80% of central London would be expected to meet the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) annual EU legal limits in 2020. TfL will continue to lobby the Of�ice for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) for further funding from its £500m funding pot to support the uptake of zero-emission capable vehicles and put in place supporting charging infrastructure. The ULEZ will require:
TfL’s entire double-decker fleet in central London will be hybrid by the time the ULEZ launches. TFL ● Heavy goods vehicles, coaches and buses – Euro 6 (registered from January 1, 2014, except TfL buses which are required to meet a higher standard. Non- compliant vehicles will be required to pay a daily charge of £100; ● Large vans and minibuses – Euro 6 for diesel engines (registered from September 1, 2016 and Euro 4 for petrol engines registered from January 1, 2007. Non-compliant vehicles will be required to pay a daily charge of £12.50; ● Cars and small vans – Euro 6 for diesel engines registered from September 1, 2015 and Euro 4 for petrol engines registered from January 1, 2006; ● Motorcycles and similar vehicles – Euro 3, registered from July 1, 2007.

The announcement follows consideration of over 16,000 responses received during the ULEZ consultation from the public, businesses and stakeholders. 79% of respondents said it was ‘important’ or ‘very important’ to tackle poor air quality in London and 58% said they ‘support’ or ‘strongly support’ the introduction of the ULEZ. Following the consultation, the Mayor announced that vehicles adapted for disabled people will have a three-year ‘sunset period’, meaning that they do not need to comply with the emissions standards until September 2023. He also con�irmed that vehicles in the 40-year rolling vehicle tax exemption for classic vehicles are exempt from the ULEZ standards.
The Mayor and TfL have intentionally con�irmed the emission standards over �ive years in advance of the introduction of the ULEZ in September 2020 to give suf�icient warning and preparation time to affected drivers as well as to accelerate the take up of low emission vehicles and stimulate the low emission vehicle market. Boris Johnson, said: “The world’s �irst ULEZ is an essential measure to help improve air quality in our city, protect the health of Londoners, and lengthen our lead as the greatest city on earth.” Prime Minister David Cameron said: “I welcome this announcement… which will build on the UK’s strengths in low emission technology.”

Wrightbus leads electric charging research consortium A UK consortium led by Wrightbus and including Magtec, Chargemaster and Cambridge University is to research the development of a common platform to power ultra-low emission buses. The three-year project will research, design and integrate pioneering charging concepts into electric buses. The project aims to produce a system suitable for powering a range of Ultra Low Emission buses – the integrated ‘power �loor’ system will power pure electric or range extended electric vehicles. Project partners have secured partial funding from a research and development competition managed by the government-

Chinese manufacturer BYD has already built a 12-metre, tri-axle electric ’decker, the K10 which was believed to have been targeted at Kowloon Motor Bus in Hong Kong. Talking about the New Routemaster built by Wrightbus, Leon says in The Londoner there’s a concept design for an all-electric version of it. London General has been operating two BYD K9 single-deck electric buses on former Red Arrow routes 507 and 521 and they’ve reportedly been well received. According to Leon, it’s planned that those two services will go all electric in 2016.

Strong support for First’s NBfWY proposal Public consultation yields very positive response to bringing New Routemasters to West Yorkshire Over 75% of people in West Yorkshire would consider using a bus more often if First’s ‘New Bus’ proposal was introduced, according to the results of the public consultation on the New Bus for West Yorkshire (NBfWY) proposal. The report stated that: l 77% of respondents said that they would consider using bus services more if the proposal was introduced; l On all measurements, passengers rated the proposed bus highly; l 85% of respondents thought that the layout of the new bus was either ‘good’ or ‘very good’; l 95% said they would welcome next stop information on bus services. Respondents commented that audio-visual announcements would increase their bus use by giving them more confidence

The buses for NCC will arrive with a comprehensive service support package which includes training for drivers and maintenance engineers. “This purchase order is a potential game changer for BYD,” said Isbrand Ho, Managing Director, BYD Europe. “Nottingham is

West Yorkshire to consider quality contract scheme West Yorkshire will take further steps towards bus regulation after councillors were unimpressed by the latest offer from operators, the Yorkshire Post reported. Councillors have agreed work on a quality contract should be progressed because of what in their view is an ‘ongoing failure to secure the improvements they want from the bus companies.’ Cllr James Lewis, Chairman of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s transport committee, said: “Our view is that operators still can’t demonstrate how by maintaining their current monopoly position they can deliver integrated ticketing so people always have the best value on a single ticketing scheme. “They also need to show how they can deliver value for money in terms of the money used to subsidise services and concessionary fares but also looking at future investment in transport infrastructure.” The Combined Authority said it is keeping a close eye on efforts to introduce a bus quality contract in the NorthEast. If the North-East bid is successful it will be the first part of the country outside London to have regulated buses since 1986.

Arriva’s 101 Medway to Maidstone Sapphire route expands
The six new ADL Enviro400s allow Arriva to increase the 101’s frequency to every 12 minutes, from every 15 Arriva has made a £1.2m investment in six new highspecification Alexander Dennis (ADL) Enviro400 buses for its ‘Sapphire’ Service 101 between Medway and Maidstone, following a similar investment last August. The new buses are due to enter service at the beginning of April, enabling the older but fullyrefurbished buses they replace to bring the benefits of the Sapphire brand to another route, yet to be
announced as CBW went to press. Arriva Marketing Manager Richard Lewis said: “We are pleased to make yet another big investment in the services provided by our Gillingham depot and to be able to extend to more of our customers the extra features that our ‘Sapphire’ buses bring. “Since launching the Sapphire buses on the 101 at the end of last August, we have seen a large increase in the number of
people using the service and this has enabled us to increase the frequency from last November to run every 12 minutes instead of every 15. “In addition, we bought 16 brand-new buses for use on local services in the Medway area last year, these also featuring free WiFi and environmentally-sourced leather seating, and representing another investment of around £2.2m.”

Working in partnership with Oxford Bus Company, MBK Arup Sustainable Projects (MASP), and sister company eFleet Integrated Service (eFIS), the plan is to trial the use of double-decker buses that can be wirelessly charged.
MASP and eFIS have already successfully implemented an electric single-deck bus trial in Milton Keynes. There is now a vision to look at the technical and commercial feasibility of replacing the existing Park & Ride buses in Oxford with a fleet of around 20 new electric vehicles. The buses would be the first double-decker vehicles of their kind to operate in the UK. The new electric buses would
be able to recharge their batteries wirelessly during their working day. The buses will recharge when power transmitted from a coil buried in the road at the Park & Ride stops is picked up by a similar coil on the underside of the bus. 10 minutes parked over a coil replenishes the energy needed for the bus’s route. The partnership hopes to have the trial running by the end of 2016.

Bath Bus Company has doubled the route frequency Bath Bus Company has added more Air Deckers to its bus service from Bath to Bristol Airport from March 29, 2015. Additional buses have been added to the �leet to operate the A4 route at twice the frequency, running every 30 minutes instead of hourly during the day time. The service also serves Saltford, Keynsham and South Bristol on a route which takes advantage of bus priorities and fast dual carriageways to ensure swift journey times. MD Martin Curtis said: “It is

Oxford bus strike due to row over pay
Oxford bus drivers are planning to go on strike for at least one day and possibly three, the Oxford Mail has reported. Drivers and other Oxford Bus Company staff are planning the action over a pay dispute. The �irst day of strikes is planned for Monday, April 13, but it is
understood the action may be repeated on Monday, April 20, and Monday, April 27, as long as the dispute is unresolved. Workers are calling for a 4% pay rise but the �irm is only offering three. A source told the Oxford Mail that the decision to strike had been taken at an emergency meeting on Tuesday. The source said: “This is due to the new boss repeatedly refusing

the annual pay rise even though there is money around to paint the new buses within the city.” He said more than 80% of workers who voted were in favour of industrial action. Rotala plc has published its �inal audited results for the year ended November 30, 2014. The highlights include: turnover of £51.7m (2013: £53.3m), gross pro�it margin up to 17.7% (2013: 17.1%), pro�it before taxation (before exceptional items) up 8% to £2.26m (2013: £2.09m) and net debt at year end down 8% to £18.4m (2013: £20m). John Gunn, Non-Executive Chairman, said: “It is encouraging to see that pre-tax pro�its for the year, on a slightly reduced level of turnover and before exceptional items, rose by 8% compared with those of 2013. “The proportion of the group’s revenues derived from contracted services has been falling for several years now, as the focus of our activities has shifted more towards commercial services. In 2014 this proportion was 35% (2013: 39%). “Thus revenues in contracted services fell overall by 13% to £17.9m (2013: £20.6m). “As revenues in contracted services have fallen, so the proportion of revenues from commercial services has risen, in 2014 to 59% of group turnover (2013: 56%). Thus overall revenues in commercial services in 2014 rose by 2% to £30.6m (2013: £29.9m). “Revenues in charter services grew by 14% in 2014 to £3.2m (2013: £2.8m). “Only about 5% of the vehicle �leet needed to be replaced during the year. WebberBus fined £3.7m Arriva after Public Inquiry bus investment WebberBus has been fined £6,875 – £125 for each of its 55 vehicles – for a number of failures to run reliable services, with complaints about buses failing to show or arriving late, the Bridgwater Mercury has reported. The company lost the Taunton Park & Ride was previously fined £5,500 in 2012 and was issued with a formal warning the following year following public inquiries sparked by poor reliability. At the latest enquiry, Traffic Commissioner Sarah Bell conceded that a number of WebberBus’s challenges to the allegations were ‘reasonable,’ because of flooding on the Somerset Levels early last year – although there was a dispute about some of the dates. She added that there was an unacceptable non-compliance rate, with buses running oustside the window of tolerance on 102 occasions out of 425 checks between November 2013 and March last year. WebberBus director Tim Gardner said the decision was fair.
On March 24, Arriva Yorkshire launched 17 new buses representing an investment of £3.7m to be used on the 202/203 route serving Huddersfield, Mirfield, Dewsbury, White Rose Shopping Centre and Leeds. The buses are branded as ‘Arriva MAX’, and feature leather seating with head rests and free WiFi. The buses are also fitted with satellite tracking to assist reliability. The new concept in buses was launched by TITAN the robot at White Rose Centre. Titan also performed at a local school in Hanging Heaton (directly on the route) during the morning. The whole school were given free day tickets, MAX torches and fold up MAX buses. They also had a tour of the new MAX double-decker bus. Nigel Featham, Regional Managing Director for Arriva Yorkshire, said: “The Arriva MAX concept will lift the quality of the 202/203 service even further and enhance the journey experience for all customers.
The new buses were presented by TITAN at a school in Hanging Heaton “With departures every 15 minutes, and with some weekly tickets working out at less than £2 per day, this service is a great way to get around.” Nikki Appleton, Marketing Manager for White Rose Shopping Centre, said: “It was great to

Go-Ahead East Anglian update and Park & Ride victories It has been reported that Go-Ahead Group-owned Konnectbus has won all six contracts for Park & Ride services in Norwich. The operator is expected to acquire new buses, as each Park & Ride service will require three buses and spare vehicles will be needed. It is also reported that these vehicles must be no older than six years of age. Konectbus currently operates three Norwich Park & Ride services from Costessey, Harford and Thickthorn. In a separate development, Go-Ahead Group is upgrading its double-decker bus fleet in its East Anglia region, with the addition of 21 refurbished Scania OmniDekkas. The first three buses, which were previously employed on Transport for London (TfL) contracted services out of Orpington garage, entered service with Anglian on Wednesday (March 25). Of the remainder, five are destined for Hedingham, with 13 for Chambers. that on the five former London Wrightbus Eclipse Gemini-bodied Volvo B7TLs at Konectbus. The Anglian examples are also equipped with standard McKenna Bros Mobitec blinds, while the remainder are fitted with Hanover white front, side and rear destination displays.” Internally, the seats have been re-covered and all handrails have been stripped, shotblasted and recovered in silver from the previous yellow. A number of OmniDekkas are going in to the Chambers fleet to release an equal number of Plaxton President-bodied Volvo B7TLs for Hedingham, which will in turn replace Tridents currently on the mainline services. The Tridents will be cascaded to school work, which will see the withdrawl of the Volvo Olympians. Nick added: “The fleet swap will allow the introduction of a revised livery for Hedingham to be accelerated. “This is based on the current Metrobus provincial livery. We’ve not got a large number of engineering speares, so a practical livery is vital. Our ethos is one panel, one colour.”

The new coaches are Plaxton Elitei-bodied Euro 6 Volvo B11Rs. Internally, they have 63 seats with 4G WiFi, USB points and power sockets. The coaches have been gradually introduced into service over the last two weeks. Phil Southall, the Managing Director of OBC, said: “The new vehicles will provide an extra 15,000 seats a month to meet increasing demand. The new Volvo/Plaxton Elitei coaches have more seats than the coaches they replace but still offer the most legroom of any scheduled coach service in the country. “We’ve resisted the temptation to cut down on legroom to get more seats in, as we know our passengers really value the comfort provided on the X90. It’s most important to be able to stretch-out especially after a long day in London. “The latest coaches join five similar vehicles introduced just over a year ago. It brings our recent investment in the X90 service to over £4m. It reflects how important the X90 London route

Durham coach driver drove in storm with no wipers A driver risked the lives of 64 passengers when he travelled along a motorway during a storm with no working windscreen wipers, ITV News reported. William Blundell had 36 children and 28 adults on board his coach, which he continued to drive despite being barely able to see what was ahead of him. One frightened mum, who was travelling with her daughter as the coach travelled through the darkness, got so afraid she rang her partner at home, who alerted the police. Officers stopped the coach, which was travelling from Blyth in Northumberland to Pennywell Community Centre in Sunderland, at Testos roundabout
and prevented William from travelling any further in the vehicle. The 54-year-old, of Seaham, County Durham, admitted he had “bowed to pressure” from passengers who had been keen to complete the journey instead of waiting two hours for a replacement coach after he reported his windscreen wipers were broken. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Newcastle Crown Court and was sentenced to eight months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, with a 12 month driving ban and £340 costs. Judge Deborah Sherwin said a “risk was placed upon the lives of

the passengers on the coach.” The judge told Blundell: “You initially did the right thing – you contacted the company and were told there would be a delay of two hours. “When the information was passed to passengers, some prevailed upon you to start driving. “It was your duty as a driver to resist the passengers because the safety of the adults and children on that coach should have been at the forefront of your mind.” Prosecutor Paul Rowland told the court Blundell had picked up the party of passengers on behalf of his company on August 1 last year when it started to drizzle and then rain heavily.
Mr Rowland said: “Bearing in mind he is a professional driver, he was carrying both children and adults, and the nature of the road conditions, there was a substantial risk.” Katherine Dunn, defending, said Blundell is a timid man with a good work record who admits his actions were “stupidity, a foolish, foolish error.” The court heard Blundell has been kept on by his company solely doing yard work but fears for his long-term future at the firm. Miss Dunn added: “He bitterly regrets his actions. He is thankful no-one was injured and there was no accident as a result of his actions.” www.coachandbusweek.com

Derek has been given a six-month sentence suspended for five years. He had been driving a coach for Tamworth-based Solus, who according to the Tamworth Herald,
at the time confirmed Derek had been employed with the company for a number of years. Specialist international personal injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, representing 25 passengers injured in the incident, said this week that the conclusion of the criminal trial in Chalons-en-Champagne was an important step forward for those affected.

VDL Citea doubledecker for BVG The Citea DLF will be the �irst public transport double-decker in the history of VDL GERMANY VDL Bus & Coach is developing the Citea DLF, a low�loor double-decker bus for BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) in Berlin. The �irst bus is expected to be delivered in the summer. “We are very proud of the con�idence BVG has placed in us and look forward to the development of the
Citea DLF, the �irst public transport double-decker built in the history of VDL”, said Boris Höltermann, Public Transport Manager of VDL Bus & Coach Deutschland. In developing the new bus, optimum use will be made of the module system around which the Citea range is built. Eight Volvo electric hybrids are now operating on the eight kilometre route 73 through the centre of Stockholm SWEDEN Eight Volvo electric hybrid buses started operating on route 73 which passes through the central areas of Stockholm, from March 16. They have replaced all of the existing buses on the route, which runs between Ropsten and the Karolinska Institute. “More and more cities now regard electri�ied bus services as a cost-ef�icient way of reducing the problems of poor air quality and noise,” said Volvo Buses’ President Håkan Agnevall. “Our solution makes travel more attractive and improves the environment without the need for large investments in new infrastructure. In Stockholm, we have yet another opportunity to demonstrate electric hybrid technology under commercial conditions.” The buses will operate quietly and free of emissions on renewable electricity for seven of the route’s slightly more than eight kilometres, and the batteries will be quickcharged for only six minutes at the
end stops. The vehicles also have a small diesel engine that is fuelled with biodiesel. Compared with conventional buses, the electric hybrids provide considerable environmental gains. Total energy consumption is said to be 60% lower than a Euro 6 diesel bus on a 10km bus route. Climate-impacting emissions are reduced by 90% as the buses use a combination of biodiesel and wind power. Operation of the Volvos is part of a demonstration project conducted by their manufacturer, SL (Stockholm Public Transport) and energy provider Vattenfall. It is part-�inanced by the EU through the ZeEUS (Zero Emission Urban Bus System) project in which more than 40 companies and organizations are participating. Following the initial demonstration project which will continue until the end of 2016, the intention is to continue using the electric hybrids in commercial operation.

One million AS-Tronics from ZF GERMANY ZF’s AS-Tronic, the automatic transmission system for heavy commercial vehicles, has achieved the landmark figure of one million units making it the world’s most successful automatic (automated) transmission. It has been in production at Friedrichshafen since 1997. While the driver had to preselect gears manually on the early semi-automatic ASTronic, the second generation of the transmission launched in 2000 meant that was no longer necessary. Automatic gear selection and electronically controlled gear changes reduce the strain on the driveline, thus increasing the service life of components. By networking transmission electronics and engine management via the CAN bus, the gearshift strategy used by the ZF-AS Tronic is designed to ensure the engine operates within the optimum speed range. In this way, the power is transmitted very efficiently to the drive axles, thereby saving fuel.
The AS-Tronic transmission range covers a torque range between 500Nm and 3,100Nm. The AS-Tronic lite (500 to 1,100Nm) and AS-Tronic mid (800 to 1,600Nm) are mainly used in light delivery trucks, buses, and medium-duty commercial vehicles, while the larger members of this transmission family are suitable for heavy trucks and construction vehicles. With its 12 speeds, AS-Tronic covers the torque range from 1,600Nm to 3,100Nm while the 16-speed version offers a particularly fine spread of gear ratios for engines with up to 2,600Nm. The entire AS-Tronic family can be combined with the Intarder, ZF’s transmission brake. This can be integrated fully into the transmission thanks to its compact design. Inside the transmission, the Intarder not only boosts engine braking power, but also reduces the workload of the service brake by up to 90%, particularly on long downhill stretches. All of that enhances safety.

cania launched the Irizar i3-bodied K-UB4x2 in the UK last year. A heavy-duty city bus that would most likely be built to a length of 12 metres, a modular design means it’s actually available in a range of configurations from a 10.95m midi to a 15m tri-axle. First customer is Menzies Aviation (MA), which has opted for the midi version, taking delivery of six 10.95m (4.8m wheelbase) buses in January for the Business Parking shuttle it operates on behalf of Heathrow Airport. MA has been a high profile and loyal Scania customer for many years and buying the Irizarbodied buses, which are sold as a complete Scania product, might seem like a natural progression for an operator that has chosen to standardise on OmniCity in the past. However, there were several competing products that could have been selected. The Irizar Scania combination won through because it was competitively priced, the anticipated robustness of the design and the Swedish manufacturer’s proven record for delivering aftersales support. Newspapers to buses
Menzies Aviation is a division of the same company that was once well known for its high street and railway station shops. Those were all sold to WH Smith in the late 1990s, but John Menzies plc which has a history that goes back to 1833 still has a newspaper and magazine distribution division. A Scottish firm, it is headquartered in Edinburgh.
Since its inception in 1995, Menzies Aviation has established itself as a major force in international ground handling. It operates in 30 countries and supported by a worldwide team of more than 20,500 people, serves over 500 airlines handling more than 1m flights and 1.6m tonnes of cargo annually. It first started operating buses at Heathrow in 1999 when it won the contract to provide the airside inter-terminal transfer service. In 2002 it was chosen to manage the airport’s landside onsite commercial car parks and provide transfers to the terminals. While Terminal 5 was being constructed between 2003 and 2008 it also provided all the transportation for construction workers, growing its fleet to its largest ever – around 90 vehicles of which 60 were Scanias. For Business Parking users, this might be their only experience of travelling on a bus. ANDY IZATT Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, it’s the primary hub for British Airways and main operating base for Virgin Atlantic. Located 14 miles west of
central London, Heathrow occupies a 4.69sq mile site. There are two parallel east-west runways, five terminals and a cargo centre. The airport originally opened as a small airfield in 1929. Its development really started in 1944 when it was chosen as a launch site for long-distance military aircraft bound for the Far East. That extension work was not completed until after the end of the war, but it was then decided it would be used as a civil airfield initially known as London Airport. It was later renamed Heathrow. In the 1950s there were six runways arranged in three pairs at different
angles in the shape of a hexagram. The main passenger terminal, opened as the Europa Building in 1955, was in the middle. That later became the original Terminal 2 demolished in 2010. Terminal 2 was joined by Terminal 1 in 1968, used mainly by British Airways until the airline moved to the new Terminal 5 when that opened in 2008. Terminal 5 lies between the northern and southern runways. Terminal 3, also in the centre of the airport, opened as The Oceanic Terminal in 1961 to handle long-haul flights. It has been expanded and upgraded since with
Pier 6 opened in 2006 to accommodate the new Airbus A380. Terminal 4 was opened in 1986. Situated to the south of the southern runway next to the cargo terminal, it’s connected to the three central terminals by the Heathrow Cargo Tunnel. The first phase of a new Terminal 2 complex on the site of the old terminal and the Queen’s Building was opened last year. Most airlines that had used Terminal 1 have now transferred to other terminals and when that process is completed, the old building will close to passengers in June this year. The site is to become another cargo centre.

Heathrow has 14 onsite commercial car parks serving the latter. The contract is for five years. The current fleet is around 30, the majority Scanias operated from new, but also a handful of Enviro200s and Mercedes-Benz Citaros inherited from APCOA Parking’s contractor Arriva-owned TGM (Tellings-Golden Miller). While APCOA ceased to be responsible for any landside transfers at the airport from April 2014, it’s now responsible for managing the car parks. Talking about the airport’s relationship with MA, Heathrow’s Commercial Accounts Manager for buses, coaches and taxis, Andy Cameron explained: “We’re paying for the expertise that it brings to the market. Having one contract for all the commercial car park transfers means we have flexibility in how the fleet is utilised. There’s onboard CCTV and real-time tracking installed on all the buses now and automated customer counting will be on all of them by the end of this month. That should enable us to tailor our service even better to demand. “Everything is monitored – the timetable when it’s a consistent service, quality of vehicle, cleanliness and the passenger journey experience. We get more feedback from employees because they’re using the service every day, but generally the feedback we get from users is positive.”

MA at Heathrow has been buying Scania buses since 2003. Vehicles are normally new and leased for five years with maintenance and servicing contracted to the local Scania-owned dealership in Bedfont Road, Stanwell. MA Operations Manager James Harvey pointed out the workshop was rebuilt around 10 years ago and has ‘state of the art’ facilities. The small number of non-Scania vehicles in the fleet are maintained under the same agreement. While the majority of today’s fleet are Polish-built 12m OmniCitys, there are also 11 OmniCity artics. The six Irizar i3-bodied K230UBs are powered by Euro 5 DC09 engines driving through six-speed ZF EcoLife automatic gearboxes. The buses have 21 forward facing Kiel Ideo seats at the rear and three tip-ups on the nearside where there’s also a wheelchair position immediately opposite the emergency door. Up to 44 standees can be accommodated. The luggage frames in the front half of the buses were designed and installed by Irizar at its Ormaiztegi factory in Spain. MA was fully involved in the process and the result is an impressively rattle-free, sturdy structure. Cab and saloon heating and ventilation systems were supplied by Irizar-owned Hispacold.

ANDY IZATT There’s no air-conditioning, the buses being replacements for similarly specified vehicles within the terms of an existing contract. Synectics supplied the eight-camera CCTV systems that monitors the exterior and interior of the vehicles, Actia the digital radios with DVD capability. There are front overhead monitors, but these have yet to be activated. Onboard real-time information systems and passenger counting equipment came from Trapeze. Hanover Systems provided the digital destination equipment. While a scheduled service is provided for most of the day, from mid-night until around 0330hrs it becomes a demand responsive operation. Two-way radio has been installed enabling drivers to keep in touch with MA’s control room at the Business Park. Scania (GB)’s resident driver trainer, Steve Dunk has spent time with MA’s own trainer, Martin Phillips outlining how the controls on the new vehicles can best be operated,
information that has been passed on to a dedicated rota of around 20 drivers. One of them, Delvin Edwards told CBW: “These are nice buses to drive – very comfortable from a driver’s point of view. The layout of the controls is much like our other Scanias. All round vision is excellent. There are no blind spots. There’s nothing complicated about driving them.” Said James: “We were delighted that Scania could offer us a midi bus. That’s the size we need to manoeuvre around this car park. It’s an Irizar body, but we’re still just dealing with Scania and that means we’ve been able to maintain our fleet standardisation. Scania looks after everything. Over the years we have got to know so many of the people. “These buses have been operating for six weeks now (at the time of CBW’s visit). They’re constantly in service 24-hours a day and are certainly proving robust enough for the job. We’ve had no complaints. We’re very pleased.” n www.coachandbusweek.com

alloway is a name synonymous with quality. Its drivers and vehicles present a smart, professional image and the �irm is one of the select group of operators to meet the tough standards required to be a member of both the Guild of British Coach Operators and CoachMarque. Having met members of the Galloway team on numerous occasions in the past at the UK Coach Rally, and always found them to be a professional yet approachable crew, I was not surprised to �ind a warm welcome when I visited the �irm’s head of�ice in early March. It’s enough to say coffee and friendly banter were not in short supply. In terms of location, Galloway is based in the heart of pleasant countryside. With rolling �ields and roads which skirt around mature oak trees, it was reminiscent of Shropshire. Now in its 50th year, things are not standing

The bus fleet includes four Mercedes-Benz-powered Optare Solos and contracts. Steadily the fleet expanded, outgrowing the original premises in the centre of Mendlesham village. New premises were developed at Denters Hill on the outskirts of the village to accommodate the larger fleet. This remains the head office, vehicle maintenance facility and main depot. In 2012, Galloway purchased Chenery Live, the day excursion, concert and live events provider from Norfolk-based R W Chenery, extending the product range into new areas and expanding the client base in to Norfolk. R W Chenery’s existing premises at 3 Castle Meadow, Norwich were retained, giving Galloway a greater opportunity to sell Galloway tours and holidays, into Norfolk – an area which the firm

had not actively promoted since successfully extending into North Essex on the opening of the retail outlet in Colchester in 2007. Illustrating the firm’s steady expansion, David said: “In the early 80s we ran nine coaches with 12 members of staff. We now run 50 vehicles and employ 150 staff.”

The ever-modest David was keen to stress: “Whilst I carry the Managing Director’s title, my focus remains on managing the fleet. Roger Stedman is Finance Director and Bernie (John Miles) is Commercial Director. Roger’s brother was one of the firm’s founders and Roger is still an anchor for so much.
Meet the Group Operations Manager In his own words, Richard Smith, Group Operations Manager has been at Galloway for “a dozen or so years.” “I had previously been in sales with Eddie Brown and operations with York Pullman,” he explained.“My dad was a mechanic at Eddie Brown and mum was in the office for a spell. I was fortunate that the management at Eddie Brown put me through my PCV driving test but they didn’t want me to go out on the road. I progressed to Sales Manager. “I relocated here – a

workshop and coach hire – a real mix. “With David Cattermole, our Managing Director, stepping back to work fewer hours, I have become a board member. Over the years we have grown our fleet to a size that can justify a structure to support all of the compliance aspects of coach operating.”
“Over time we’ve bought other local firms. We have reacted to opportunities as they have arisen but our focus has remained on providing a quality service. We’re proud of our accreditation for the Guild of British Coach Operators and CoachMarque, which gives us a good measure of how we’re performing. “CITO (Consortium of Independent Tour Operators) is now a formal organisation founded by a group of operators, including Bernie, to share ideas and best practice. It enables us to share departures for more bespoke tours. We pick up locally and feed in to joint tours.” David said a prime example of reacting to an opportunity was the firm’s involvement with National Express (NX). “We had our first NX contract in 1989. NX is now one of our largest customers and our association with them has been great for us. We have developed many of our policies to align with those of NX. Richard Smith, recently appointed Group Operations Manager (see separate panel) is now taking over David’s place on the CoachMarque committee. Richard agreed with David’s view of NX: “I believe it’s interesting that many CoachMarque members work for NX. Much like CoachMarque and Guild of British Coach Operators, NX is a benchmark for us. I believe NX’s standards are higher than those laid down by DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency).”
Recruitment
“We’ve got progression in the business,” enthused Richard. “We’re currently reviewing our management structure. There is more emphasis on bringing people in with outside experience. Fresh ideas bring a new approach rather than bad habits. “On drivers, we’re aiming to recruit people who have, for example, previously worked in retail. They already have customer service training engrained in them, which means we just need to teach them to drive. Historically, some drivers have disliked passengers. “Our Allocations Officer Carl Crysell (see separate interview on p24-25) is a classic example of our new breed, but the problem is customers request him to drive them – when we need him in the office. “The key is to have a continual supply of people like him. We aim to recruit two people a month, so it’s a constant process. It works well – our staff turnover has reduced. You get career drivers who go from operator to operator but they don’t stay too long. We’ve recruited a number of former military personnel thanks to the NX Corporate Covenant which guarantees interviews for them. Former armed services people are very reliable and smart – we just need more of them.”

“Something that has contributed to our success is diversification. We’ve got our own coach holidays and excursions, National Express, local bus services, school tours and private hire. That spread gives us the best vehicle utilisation,” explained David. “In turn, this has led to its own operational www.coachandbusweek.com

issues. We operate 24/7, something that has served as the biggest contributor to us managing our operation better. It was dictated by our tour operation. We have a lot of comings and goings at odd hours.” Richard was not wrong when he said: “Having a diverse business has been a strength. We have got a large amount of bread and butter work. We can’t have all our eggs in one basket. Being a tour operator in our own right helps too.” Asked whether the operation of local bus services is tough, Richard replied: “Yes – along with concessionary fares reimbursement, BSOG has reduced. Shorter term contracts are hard too. Five years used to mean just that but now it’s only as good as the notice period. It is difficult to invest under those conditions. We have tried to integrate school services with scheduled public services. Each operator has different standards and overheads, but quality is not always a prime consideration. “The introduction of low-floor buses had a big impact – Mercedes-Benz Varios were great for rural services. However, selling buses is hard too. That said, local bus services form an integral part of our business. We utilise the marketing space – and it acts as a useful link in the community – but it’s undoubtedly becoming harder.” On the holiday side, Richard said: “Things are stable at the moment. We’ve got a good loyal customer base. Our premium brand – Sapphire Star – is popular for breaks of five or more days and we also offer door-to-door pick-ups. It’s a key selling point for us. “Moving with the times, we’ve launched online booking using Distinctive Systems. Some of our customers may be older, but it doesn’t mean they can’t use technology. Equally, we maintain five travel shops – in the centre of Ipswich, Felixstowe, Stowmarket, Colchester and Norwich. With holidays, customers like to talk with experienced staff and gain reassurance. That’s what people are paying for – they value our package. Depending on the transaction, customers can discuss concerns such as accommodation or meal options. Our reservations staff are trained to a certain standard – and the same goes for the drivers, who can make or break a tour.”

New coach, new livery
A new development in the 50th anniversary year is the acquisition of a custom-built MercedesBenz Tourismo coach, sporting an all-new livery, which has been created by local designer Group Two. “In our 50th year, we’re proud that with the help of the team here, we’re introducing a new livery, which will be applied across the fleet in due course,” enthused David. Asked why the Tourismo was chosen, Richard said: “There are a number of financial aspects for particular vehicles. We wanted to replace a 2007-plate Setra S416GT-HD 49-seater, as part-exchange. We canvassed the market – some people still seem a bit standoffish with Setra. Evobus offered us a very good deal – for something that was Euro 6 and a new custom build, with all the benefits that can bring rather than a stock vehicle.” Richard was full of praise for the new coach. “We’re absolutely delighted with it,” he enthused.“The seating is of a good quality – and there is a plenty of leg room. It’s a very similar sort of product to Setra.” Back to the subject of fleet acquisition, Richard added: “We’re realistic – don’t just buy on price. We tend to turn vehicles over in the winter

months when operations are less intense.”
Conclusion
Looking to the future, David said: “The quality of our driving staff will remain an essential part our success. Our best coach is only as good as our worst driver. I have no time for poor performance. “To help us through our peak days, we’ve got 12 people in the office who hold PCV licences. We now have to be more controlled with part-time drivers. Why? Whilst they sign a declaration, in order to conform with Drivers Hours and Working Time Directive legislation, we have to consider other activities in their life.” Asked for his opinion of the Driver CPC, David replied: “I feel the Driver CPC has increased the profile of coach driving. We don’t just tick boxes here – we’ve wanted our customers and staff to benefit. When I think about the development of technology, drivers need training. It may not always suit us, but all the legislation we comply with has been introduced for a reason.” In something that will doubtless strike a chord with many, David said: “In recent years we’ve developed a senior management team to ensure the ongoing success of the business. I believe a successful coach operator needs so much energy to drive it forward – it never stops. “For many of us, it’s not a career – it’s a way of life. My wife drives and often we double crew together. “No two trips are ever the same – sickness and an HGV overturning at the junction of the A12 are just two things which have jumped out of nowhere. Each time there are different people on board and different people in charge.” Asked for his highlight during his time at Galloway, David replied: “I don’t have any one in particular. I’m very proud of this 50th anniversary. While there have been a lot of developments along the way, nothing in particular stands out. “The people we meet in the industry drive me forward – Peter Bibby and Tony Soames are two that spring to mind. It’s very much a people industry. I’m fortunate to have almost earned my living out of my hobby. Things like the UK Coach Rally have given us a platform to meet our operator partners.” n

In a scene familiar to anyone who’s ever worked in a traffic office, Carl matches vehicles and drivers to work in his role as Allocations Officer
Gareth Evans talks to Carl Crysell, Allocations Officer at Galloway Coach Travel about his change of career from policeman to truck salesman to coachman
C
arl Crysell is clearly in his element at Galloway. Amid the friendly ice-breaking chit-chat over coffee, it’s immediately apparent that the former policeman and truck salesman has a professional but very much down-to-earth nature. He has a dry sense of humour and knows how to engage with people too. These of course are important traits for his role in the traffic office – where it’s all too easy for some individuals to fall victim to stress. Carl however, relishes the challenge of matching work, vehicles and drivers – while also drawing on his experience of driving the full spectrum of the firm’s work, and his ability to deal with incidents in the police.

CBW How did you get into the industry?
Carl Crysell (CC) I joined the industry via Galloway. We train people here from licence acquisition. I gained my PCV here. That was in response to an advert in the local newspaper in Christmas 2012. I looked on the website and applied. I joined in the May. I was attracted by the idea of National Express coach driving. I previously worked for MercedesBenz commercial vehicles selling trucks. Unfortunately I was there during the recession – when nobody was buying trucks. It boiled down to the fact I could earn more driving than selling. I passed my PCV driving test in our training vehicle. I went out route learning with other drivers. I’m not a native – some of the places we serve are very rural. I remember someone telling me ‘we stop outside Molly’s’ – it turned out that Molly is the name of a horse in the adjacent field. Another place on the edge of Thurston is called Donkey Corner – yet we rarely see a donkey there. Some of the routes, if you get lost, you need airlifting out. I live in Essex – where all the roads are surfaced. I had to get used to the accents too. In short, everything was new to me.
After a spell on service work, I progressed to National Express duties in the September. I had driven big vehicles before – I had my HGV licence – so the size of our vehicles didn’t bother me. My whole life had been spent going up and down the A12, so driving NX route 481 didn’t phase me in the slightest. Many local bus services and school journeys are interworked, so there is plenty of variety. I drove my first private hire in Christmas 2013. I took a group from Ipswich Hospital to Covent Garden. I then started driving tours – initially doublemanned ones to the Battlefields just before Christmas. I averaged one Battlefield tour a month and in between I would drive local bus services, schools and swimming bath runs. About this time last year, I had an appraisal. I was asked if I wanted to go full-time on coaching as the company had received such good feedback about me. I’ve never been precious about what I drive. I drove Battlefields all over the spring and summer, which I enjoyed immensely. It was 90% school groups, with the remainder tour and private hire work.
Current role
CBW Tell us about your current role.
CC I was happy driving but saw the role of Allocations Officer advertised. We have three Traffic Managers – for coaches, local bus services and NX. To alleviate some of the pressure on them, my role was to take on the allocation of people and vehicles across the board. I went into the office on December 1, 2014 and was responsible on my own from January 1. It’s still a very steep learning curve. I didn’t mind the stress. I’ve always liked people. I was in the police for 10 years. I see lots of parallels between here and the police in terms of attitudes. It’s people. Those parallels may not always be obvious.

We’ve got 90 or so drivers. It’s about learning all their individual strengths and weaknesses and allocating the work accordingly. I would never deliberately allocate a job for someone who is unsuitable. I enjoy the challenge. My main drive came, as is so often the case, from my wife. If I were young, free and single, I would probably be doing lots of things – but one of them would be driving full-time. My wife has gone back to University – our children, all boys, are now at school. She’s a student midwife. Put it this way, the washing up doesn’t get done so often. We’re training the children, who are aged five, eight, 10 and 13, to use the dishwasher. Because I was a policeman, my career offered everything – a good pension, security and the change for progression. Therefore, she stayed at home. She supported www.coachandbusweek.com

me through all the stress. The world changed – there is now no such thing as a job for life. This job, as well as progressing career-wise – which is what I walked away from in the police – allows me to support the family at home. My wife does six weeks at University, which is straightforward, and then six weeks on placement, which is shifts at all hours of the day. My role is broadly Monday to Friday but the firm is very good to me. I’ve got a degree of flexibility. CBW Why do you enjoy working at Galloway?
CC Initially it was driving. I got the bug for driving. I’m not fussed if I take a Van Hool across the water or a bus to Bury St Edmunds. I liked that in the police – fast cars and flashing lights. The stresses are similar but different too in my www.coachandbusweek.com

CC If I had to pick a favourite, it would be a twoaxle Van Hool Alicron. My least favourite vehicle is our Plaxton Cheetah. It always seems like a big vehicle on little wheels. CBW Do you have any anecdotes?
CC I recall two teachers having a domestic on a tour I was driving. I was not privy to what had gone on in the hotel the previous night but she was a theatrical crier. By contrast, her hubby was all calm but I kept thinking she was going to punch him. There was name calling too. I felt for the other teacher, who didn’t know where to look.
CBW What aspirations do you have for the future? CC I want to progress in the industry. I would like to go into management. I also fancy a role in the Office of the Traffic Commissioner – that end of the industry, i.e. the regulatory side. CBW What advice would you give to anyone considering following in your footsteps? CC Learn London. We all like driving. You can get star struck by vehicles, but I think to progress and succeed in this industry, you need to be able to get on with people. You need a thick skin too, and be able to listen and be tactful. I was told in my interview that you can teach somebody with customer service skills to drive but it’s a lot harder to teach customer service skills to someone who can drive. n

Van manufacturers will be showing their latest vehicles: either as factory-built minibuses or as suitable platforms for conversion, and many of the solutions offered to freight operators in the �ield of legal compliance, �leet and workshop management, and road safety will also have relevance for those who operate passenger vehicles of all sizes. Ford will have a factory-built 17-seater Transit minibus on show, and alongside it will be an Tourneo Custom converted by Westfalia and featuring a very up-market spec which had still to be �inalised as this issue went to press. See it for yourself on stand 5G10/20. Renault will show three passenger-speci�ic versions of the Tra�ic nine-seater in minibus, taxi and wheelchair-carrying guises on stand 5H60. Vauxhall displays the new British-built Vivaro Combi in nine-seat minibus form on stand 4E10. Treka Bus will exhibit two accessible vehicles built on the latest Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform on stand 5H70. These are the T16 coachbuilt model and the front-entry Treka Van.
Cameras and safety systems
The nature of operations in London has been changed drastically in recent years by an increase in cyclist numbers and militancy, with other big cities to follow. Operators who regularly send buses and coaches into central London will therefore be interested in the camera systems available for �itment to vehicles. These can be used as supplementary aids to
the driver’s mirrors, seeing into blind spots, or to record events leading up to a collision. The compulsory �itment of ‘cycle-safe’ devices to trucks engaged in such major contracts as CrossRail has increased demand for these systems, with a consequent rise in customer choice and fall in unit cost. For some suppliers, the camera and other equipment are just the start of a service which also covers driver training and the processing of data for accident investigations and insurance claims. Intelligent Telematics (Stand 4J100), which is a well-known provider of vehicle camera and tracking systems, will launch a new 3G dualcamera system at the Commercial Vehicle Show. It will be shown alongside the existing range of forward-facing and multi-camera solutions that are designed to help improve road safety, reduce insurance costs, and enhance driver behaviour. Lytx Europe (Stand 4E119) offers a combined front/rear-facing camera, along with an analysis of risky driving behaviour. The cameras capture ‘exception based’ clips determined by harsh braking or acceleration showing events in the eight seconds preceding the incident and four seconds after. It can recommend the best safety solutions for blind spot awareness and show how digital recording systems can reduce insurance premiums by killing false claims using factual evidence. Also on show will be vehicle-speci�ic reversing solutions for vans. 3Sixty Fleet (Stand 5J130) will launch its new tailored Fleet Watch risk-management product. The package assists with the ‘before, during and after’ process of any road traf�ic accident or incident. Integrated cameras, telematics, vehicle tracking technology and app technology are offered, complementing the roles of �leet, transport, compliance, health and safety and HR managers. SmartWitness will show three devices on stand 4G80. The �irm’s newest innovation – the KP1 – is said to be the world’s most powerful 3G/4G instant transmission camera. Boasting built-in telematics and tracking, it provides email footage of accidents as soon as they occur. The show will see the launch of an optional second camera and in-vehicle monitor which can be used as a driving aid and to cover blind spots. SVC1080 is a new version of SmartWitness’ best-selling camera. It has an inbuilt viewing screen and was developed to meet demand for a consumer rather than �leet product. SVC1080LCA is one of the best-selling devices in its class and is claimed to have captured more incidents than any other camera. It is now telematics-compatible. SmartWitness said that only 2% of accidents captured on dash cams end up being disputed by insurers: the average for all accidents is 40%. Mekra is a leading manufacturer of

This newly developed product offers up to six camera views, including a reversing camera, live tracker, vehicle diagnostics, speed and GPS with dedicated monitoring and real-time data management and analysis. Operators running van-derived vehicles such as Vitos, Vianos, T5s, Crafters and Sprinters should call in at the Alpine stand (5C02) to view the custom-built infotainment systems that they can install in their vehicles to the delight of passengers and drivers alike. A full suite of electronic entertainment and navigation is supplemented by driver aids such as reversing cameras.
Wheels, tyres and pressure monitoring
Tyre failures are often dangerous and always expensive and massively inconvenient. Now
the remote monitoring of tyre pressures and temperatures becomes a reality thanks to cooperation between the VDO and tyre divisions of German automotive giant Continental (Stand 5G120). Conti’s Pressure Check sensors in its tyres can now not just show tyre pressure and temperature information on a cab display, but also relay it back to the operator’s depot via the Conti VDO TISweb system. This will be demonstrated live at the Continental Automotive stand at the CV Show. There is also a facility to download digital tachograph data automatically via WiFi when a vehicle returns to base, and the ProVue 360 vision cameras which Continental believes will eventually replace conventional mirrors will also be on display. Continental Tyres will be pushing the Pressure Check system hard, pointing out that it’s already available as a line-�it option on new Van Hool and Solaris coaches. It’s estimated that over 90% of on-road tyre failures start with a gradual pressure loss, and the safety implications, costs and inconvenience of tyre failures can be particularly damaging for coach operators. Maintaining correct tyre pressures also provides bonuses in terms of tyre life and vehicle fuel consumption, plus tyres that have always been run at the correct pressure are

A real-time tyre pressure and temperature monitoring system will be the focal point of RL Automotive’s display on stand 4B20. The new TyreWatch system monitors a fleet’s tyres for pressure and temperature over 24 hours, seven days a week. The package consists of sensors inserted inside each wheel rim, a display screen in the cab and a GPS transmitter that transmits real-time information via the mobile phone network. The driver can see the tyre pressures and temperatures, and these will also be uploaded to the web so they can be monitored by any device that has an internet connection. Email alerts for slow punctures and high temperatures, which can be caused by a braking problem as well as a fall in pressure, are sent automatically, so problems can be rectified before a blow-out occurs. TyreWatch is a complete and affordable monitoring package that can be easily installed and will eliminate many tyre-related roadside breakdowns. On stand 4K50, the TyrePal TeleTPMS system will show its capability to help reduce fuel consumption, breakdowns, accidents, blowouts, fires and tyre wear. A smart TeleTPMS module on the vehicle provides continuous tyre and location information to a fleet control centre via GPRS. Vision is a dualfacing front-mounted camera for monitoring driver behaviour and recording incidents; 3D is a remote digital tachograph data download service compatible with Stoneridge and Continental/VDO tachos; while My MiX enables drivers to access their own performance data and see how they are performing against fleet/ site averages. The portal is streamlined to prove information on their driver scores over selectable periods and by vehicle. It can be accessed via desktop PC, smartphone and tablet. MiX Fleet Manager itself uses a powerful onboard computer to gather and relay information to an on-line reporting suite. Drivers receive instant feedback via a RIBAS in-cab display, which monitors excessive Revs, prolonged Idling, harsh Braking and Acceleration and overSpeeding. Real-time driver information will be the main focus of the Tachosys stand (5G01) at this year’s show, as the company promotes its latest tachograph data download tools. Since 2012, companies that have adopted Tachosys’ remote download solution digiDL have enjoyed completely unattended tachograph downloads and saved hundreds of man-hours as a result. Now Tachosys has expanded the role of digiDL to include real-time driver information. The digiDL supports both Driver Decision Support (DDS) and Counter, similar technologies from the two key tachograph manufacturers, Stoneridge and Continental. The data allows companies to see their current driver status in relation to the Drivers’ Hours Law. TomTom also supplies vehicle-specific navigators that allow the user to programme in details of the vehicle’s weights, dimensions and other details, and it will plot a route accordingly. The Pro 8275 navigation system will be highlighted at the show. This offers the usual suite of navigation facilities for the professional driver but also has the ability to read bar codes and carry out other tasks that will enable it to be used for applications such as ticket-checking. TomTom is expanding the scope of its driver aids through partnerships with application developers.

Auto-electrical systems specialist Intellitec will be on stand 5J84 bringing visitors up-to-date with the very latest developments in Lithium ION battery technology. Intellitec will show vehicle builders and operators the many advantages to be gained from using the technology: weight, cost and environmental impact reductions. With standard deep-cycle batteries giving a maximum life of 600 to 750 cycles at 50% discharge and Li-ION offering 5000 cycles, and a 70% weight reduction Intellitec maintains that the facts speak for themselves. Compliance
Finding a driver is drunk or unlicensed has to be one of an operator’s worst nightmares. With the paper counterpart of the UK driving licence due for shredding on June 8, compliance checking is going to be a real issue for operators. Driver Hire is enhancing its licence checking system with two new services: Instant Check and eConsent. Currently, once a driver has given his or her consent for a check to go ahead, there is a 24-hour turnaround before the results are available from the DVLA. Driver Hire’s Instant Check service enables employers (with consent from the driver) to make an immediate check on drivers’ licence records directly on the DVLA database, speeding up the checking process. The service can also be programmed to undertake regular, scheduled checks. This will enable employers to monitor their drivers more closely, highlighting instances where, for example, penalty points are being clocked up. eConsent works in tandem with Instant Check and removes the requirement by a driver to complete a paper mandate giving permission for an employer or driver agency to check a driver’s licence record. Subscribers to Smartanalysis or SmartLicence can take advantage of the new SmartAlerts feature. SmartAlerts provides automated email alerts highlighting tachograph, drivers’ hours and driving licence issues that need their immediate attention. CV Show newcomer Licence Bureau is offering a live demonstration of its driver checking system on stand 4D128. Compliance Managed Services give users access to a wide range of licence checking and compliance tools, keeping tabs on a company’s fleet of drivers to highlight potential risks or noncompliance issues. Licence Bureau will also exhibit a new-for-2015 feature, which will see its portal integrate with telematics and accident management data feeds. Alcolock UK will hold a business card raffle for a Breath Alcohol Tester on stand 4J02. It will also launch the Alcolock V3 WiFi, which will not allow a vehicle to be started until the driver has undertaken a breath test.
Workshop equipment and services
CANBus specialists CANM8 will launch a new range of CANNECT products on stand 4E130. These are the latest developments in its range of CANBus Interfaces and feature some unique advantages over general systems, the most important being that they are fully updatable. to keep up with the latest vehicle applications, meaning customers have the ability to update software to the latest version quickly and easily. Another important feature is CANM8’s remote support service. The CANNECT updater is a dual-function interface that provides a software update and can also be used by engineers to analyse remotely new vehicle CAN systems or issues with existing compatibility. All that customers require to use the service is a laptop or notebook PC and a sufficient internet connection. As well as the CANNECT range, CANM8 also provide many vehicle-specific Runlock systems, body builder solutions and interfaces for data telematics devices. Ceramex (stand 5A19) is offering DPF service exchange programmes for fleet operators. It claims its unique inspection and Xpurge cleaning methods can extended filter life and cleaning intervals while retaining optimum fuel consumption. Cetor (stand 4D65) produces some of the world’s most powerful battery booster packs. The company’s products are manufactured in Belgium with European-only parts, and have a two-year warranty. All boosters are supplied with high quality curved clamps, while all negative clamps are fitted with an LED light for easy identification. The illuminated voltmeter ensures an accurate voltage reading and also doubles as an alternator tester once the vehicle has been started. Filtration specialist and manufacturer Donaldson will demonstrate its latest generation of engine fuel and lube cartridge filters on stand 3C81. Manufactured using
superior direct-bonding technology and metalfree construction, the filters can be crushed and/or incinerated. The filters also feature Synteq media technology, which uses cellulose and melt-blown synthetic layers to achieve high levels of filtration performance. When used in fuel filter applications, Synteq provides high efficiency emulsified water separation and can be used in both suction and pressure sides of fuel systems. Donaldson will also exhibit its second generation DPF pulse cleaner, which is certified for use across Europe. DPF systems often require specialist maintenance, including annual cleaning to dislodge ash build-up and unburned soot. The cleaner uses a high-volume, low-pressure pulse to dislodge unburned soot and ash from the DPF. It then captures the byproduct in a disposable receptacle and prevents contaminant from escaping during operation. Rozone’s battery management division is launching its new trading name, Roactive, at this year’s show. met with Karen Beasley in the National Express House located above Birmingham coach station. A warm and friendly person, she welcomed me and gave me a tour of the building. I was shown around the Contact Centre which was decked out for the upcoming Red Nose Day with themed bunting, posters and a huge counter counting down the days, hours and minutes until the event started. David Wrottesley, Media Manager for National Express UK Coach and Eurolines helped organise the meeting and joined us in going through Karen’s varied career with the company.

National Express Customer Experience Director for Coach, Karen Beasley, outlines her career and current role to Jade Smith Karen Beasley (KB) I did a national diploma in travel and tourism for two years and I was at the age where I didn’t really know exactly what I wanted to do next. I saw a job at Bowen Travel, a coach company, as a Reservations Clerk. I was
there for two years, and as it was only a small family-run business I wanted to think about my next steps. As it was transport-related I saw the opportunity for National Express. I applied and got the role as a Clerical Assistant 28 years ago. That’s how it’s started really – I’ve been really fortunate to have so many opportunities to further my development and progression. CBW Outline your career.
KB I was Clerical Assistant for a couple of years and I began to think that there wasn’t any progression opportunities for me here so I started to look around. I got a job pretty quickly with HSBC and actually it was a director at National Express at the time that asked me if I was sure about my career change. I told him that I felt there wasn’t much of a progression opportunity and he asked me to go to an interview that afternoon. I went for the interview for the role of Senior Customer Relations Advisor and from that point on I decided to stay. I moved quite quickly from that role to Customer Relations Of�icer, with a complainthandling team. We used to have a number of www.coachandbusweek.com

CBW How have things changed since you �irst started in the industry?
regional of�ices that handled customer relations but over a period of time they were consolidated into one. I then became Customer Relations Manager and was lucky enough to have had other opportunities made available to me – one day the Managing Director at the time called me into his of�ice and said we had an opportunity to run the retail shops at each of our stations. That role was General Manager for Travel Shops, and soon evolved into General Manager of Sales and Key Accounts widening the scope further. Head of Customer Service was next, then Head of Sales which was all of the channels – sales, business development, Contact Centre, then Head of Contact Centre. I also headed the customer relations teams for bus, coach and trains, for a period of time. Finally, since last May, I’ve been appointed to the role of Customer Experience Director. That’s the Contact Centre, customer relations, and includes the wider piece of how we in�luence customer experience across the organisation. It’s a big responsibility, but it’s been great. The business has given me so many amazing opportunities – had I left after a couple of years I’m sure I would have lived to regret it. www.coachandbusweek.com

KB Massively – in all ways. Technology is the biggest change of all. For example, we talk about the Contact Centre today being 200 people. In those days there were around six people lea�ing through guide pages, so a very different way of working. Most sales were taken face-to-face, obviously not over a website. If you wanted to get a message to somebody it was a handwritten note as there was no such thing as mobile phones. Mostly it’s technology-related changes that have altered the way we work. National Express itself is more innovative than it used to be. Its focus on the customer has completely changed – the customer is held business-centric now which hasn’t always been to the extent we do currently. The way we measure things is very different and we understand more about what our customers want from us as a business. The culture changes with time as well – how we engage with our employees and how we use them to help drive the business forward has changed considerably. We’re trying to make everybody completely multi-skilled in the Contact Centre so we set out on a journey which we call ‘World Class Pathway’. We want to be world-class, but in order to get there we need to take our people with us. Everybody knows where they stand against a performance matrix and we are training them further to handle all call types. We also have ‘Role Models’ where we celebrate success of individuals who perform well, which is something we do quarterly and at the end of the year. Again, it’s about celebrating our people. We measure against productivity and also quality. If they achieve all of their objectives they become a ‘Role Model’. It’s not about giving them big tokens – it’s just about celebration and recognition. Our ‘Happy Mondays’ event is fun too. I went to see LV and they had ‘Love Mondays’ where they did something special on a Monday. So
KB It is very varied. It can range from general people management and leadership responsibilities to more strategic sessions. We have a customer experience working group that get together – a cross-functional team that talk about how we can drive improvements for our customers across the business. We’ve got a customer focus panel so I meet with them on a regular basis to understand from a customer perspective what they want from us, and how we are performing for them. I also do something called ‘Cakes with Karen’ which is with our frontline Contact Centre team, who have a chance to talk to me directly about how things are for them because even though I’ve been in their shoes, things have moved on. I think it’s really important we have an open and honest dialogue and that people feel they can come and tell me what is going well as well as what needs to be focussed on. I love having such variety, it is very enjoyable. CBW Describe an average week for you.
KB As I said, it varies a lot from one day to the next. There’s always that leadership aspect that overarches everything and there are more strategic sessions, and networking events. From analysing stats for the week, understanding what we did well and what we could have done better, getting into the detail of what customers are saying. We have something called ‘Exec on the Move’ which is travelling out on our vehicles, speaking to our frontline teams, drivers, coach station members of staff just understanding from them directly what works well. We talk to customers whether it’s through customer focus panels, but also sometimes when things go wrong, there’s nothing more satisfying than picking up a call with a customer and being able to resolve things. I know not everyone enjoys handling complaints, but I actually get a real buzz from putting a bad situation right.

I brought that back and made it work for us. The rationale for it was to reduce absence on a Monday and make Monday a different and fun day. On ‘Happy Mondays’ people dress down, we celebrate commendations – we have an email that goes out every week with 20-25 comments from customers praising our people. It’s all about sharing stories and celebrating successes. We have ‘Expressions’ as well which is about giving everybody a voice – we have a number of teams and each have a representative who comes forward to a forum every month to give feedback. Over time we encourage them to not just come with problems but also with potential solutions.

CBW Tell us about your current role.
CBW What do you most enjoy about your job? KB The people. We’ve always had a lovely culture at National Express, certainly in the past 28 years at least. I think it’s because there’s no particular hierarchy – it’s quite an open structure. We’ve got some great people who actually want to be here and add so much to what we do. It’s how we nurture and develop that further to get the best out of them so they really do make a difference. We’ve invested heavily into a coaching development programme which every manager has gone through. It’s all about empowering people, helping them to �ind their own solutions and make decisions. THE BIG PICTURE Lothian Buses expanded into East Lothian in June 2012 with the introduction of route 113 from Pencaitland to Edinburgh. It replaced First East Scotland’s 44B service following that operator’s withdrawal from the area. Route 113 is operated by subsidiary Lothian Country Buses and an additional route, numbered 104 between Haddington and Edinburgh was introduced in September 2014. Plaxton President-bodied Dennis Tridents were later joined by Wrightbus Eclipse Volvo B7RLEs, but most recently two former Airlink Gemini-bodied Volvo B9TLs have been added to the Lothian Country fleet to provide peak time capacity. The ‘We’re sorry’ helps to resolve various situations. GARETH EVANS and it’s a difficult job – it’s call after call, but on the other side of that we try and keep the fun side active. For example we’ve celebrated Red Nose Day and on March 13 we took calls from people making donations. We’ve done that a few times because it’s a nice community event. People make cakes, dress up and take calls from people who want to donate – it’s a wonderful experience. This year 63 volunteers

took a total of £39,636 in over 1,005 transactions. We do all sorts of charity events because it means so much to our employees that they’re helping out in that way. National Express as a business does a lot as well as the Contact Centre by itself. For Birmingham Children’s Hospital at Christmas people bring in donations and we support McMillan’s Cancer Research – some of the ladies make beautiful cakes. It makes me really proud that we’ve got so many skills within the centre. These are people where their main job is to answer calls, but they have so much more they can do – some people have put together videos for us to use in presentations and awards ceremonies, someone has recently been recognised in our Value Awards for developing a National Express Monopoly board – they all make a huge contribution. We tend to celebrate birthdays for the teams as well as long service awards – we’ve had a lady work for 20 years in the Contact Centre which is always really nice. It’s been 28 years for me, but I’ve done lots of different things.
These people are so committed to what they do. We do have a lot of long-serving people and they’ve seen a lot of the changes here as well so they have to become adaptable and flexible. CBW What are the main challenges of your job?
KB Customer expectations are increasing all of the time with technology, with social media making it quick and easy for customers to highlight issues. It’s not acceptable to have a five day turnaround now – we tend to have hours in which to respond. When I first started at National Express a complaint was usually handwritten, which sometimes could take a bit of deciphering. By the time we’d received the complaint a week had passed. Once we’d replied, it was another week for them to receive it, so it would often take 28 days before that issue had been closed down. Now our average is three days and for the most part it’s immediate with our live chats and calls. We have a big focus on first contact resolution – we try to not put customers through to lots of different people, instead we have made everybody multi-skilled and they are empowered to compensate as appropriate. www.coachandbusweek.com

National Express has changed its focus on the customer in recent years. ANDY IZATT Some of our challenges aren’t technological – road disruption for example. We see it getting worse and there’s an impact there on our customers, so our relationship with the Highways Agency is important with them giving us information so we can plan ahead. This partnership is developing all the time. We’re sharing data and best practices to improve.
Contact Centre
CBW You head the 24hr Contact Centre which has taken one million calls in 12 months. Tell us about that. KB We are really busy with a huge volume of calls – we get sales calls, enquiries, lost property and some quite funny calls at times. We just aim to answer each one on its own merit as each is important to us. It just underlines the sheer volume of calls and the speed in which the Contact Centre works. At the same time we celebrated 30,000 live chats and 70,000 emails. The team members aren’t all fully multi-skilled yet but they’re all going through the programme – they love the variety. That’s where we’re aiming to be, where they might take a call one second, then go on live chat or write an email. Years ago it might have just been sitting with the guide pages and handling timetable enquiries. www.coachandbusweek.com

CBW The Centre has had a live chat system added to communicate with customers. Tell us about that. KB We were at a different office until January 2014. When we moved over we brought in a lot of new technologies, so we’ve now got a cloud-based telephony solution which improves our optimisation and allows us to do home-working. We introduced unsocial home-working straight away. As we’re a 24/7 operation we have to have our staff working right through the night, so those night teams don’t come into the office – instead they work from home. We’re developing that now for the daytime workers as well – we’re looking to allow them to choose whether they want to come into the office that day. Sometimes we need them in the office for meetings, but if it’s easier for them to work at home on some days then sometimes that works in our favour. If there’s snow we tend to have a lot of calls, so we want to be able to tell people to work from home which is flexible working from both their and our perspective. Live chat was brought in at the same time which we’re developing as we go. We want to
see how that changes customer behaviour – right now are they making a call through choice or just because they think it’s the quickest channel? From both a staff and customer perspective it’s gone really well so far. We measure everything in the Contact Centre and currently have a 94% customer satisfaction rating following a call; live chat also has high rates of satisfaction after each enquiry – and we can see the whole transcript of what the customer and advisor have said so we can see if there’s anything we need to do better. With live chat a response is instant and that’s a much better way of dealing with issues. CBW The Network Control Centre is celebrating its 25th this year. Tell us about that.
KB That’s the centre that contacts the drivers who are out on the road. It is the absolute hub of the network and it’s quite a small team considering they look after the whole of the network 24/7 and have to make some quite testing decisions. They also now have a communications team who are constantly monitoring Twitter and social media and updating accordingly – so if there’s any disruption of any kind we can

keep our customers up-to-date and respond accordingly.
KB For the company it’s all about being worldclass in customer service. We do a good job already but we can be even better. In terms of the Institute of Customer Service UKCSI index, we are number one in grand transportation. I’m so appreciative of where I’ve got to today, so for me I aspire to do a good job and make a difference. As long as I continue to do that I’m very happy.
CBW What is the impact of Twitter and other social media sites?
KB Velocity of communications has been very reactive. Twitter is another channel for people to communicate with us, but at the same time they are communicating with the public so we need to demonstrate that we are responding quickly and efficiently. We have a dedicated team and we can deal with any issues that pop up quickly. It just means that people can see us dealing with the job publicly. People searching for ‘National Express’ can see that we’ve helped our customers. It turns out to be a means to show we’re a quick and efficient service. When we compare that to 28 years ago with a handwritten letter that took a week to arrive, times are clearly very different now. It’s going well – it is a challenge in that we’ve got to be constantly reviewing and looking at how we can do things better. I think we’re doing really well but we’ve always thinking ‘What else can we do to improve further?’
Anecdotes
CBW Any interesting anecdotes?
KB There’s one that sticks in my mind – I remember getting this handwritten letter that was probably from an elderly man, judging by the handwriting. He said that he’d got to a stop and the driver had said what he thought was “cup of tea?” so he got off to get his tea. Unfortunately when he came back he realised the coach driver had said “Coventry” and as a result he was stranded. Thankfully, that just wouldn’t happen today! 44 | COACH & BUS WEEK | March 31, 2015

CBW Do you have any advice you would give to anyone wishing to follow your footsteps? KB Hard work I think is the main element – things don’t just happen. Work really hard and be true to yourself. Be committed to the cause – if you’ve got a clear ambition stay focussed. Do it all with a smile, be nice to people and stay positive. The most important aspect is remembering where you’ve come from as you progress. CBW What aspirations do you have for the future?
KB This ‘We’re sorry’ card is quite an innovative thing that we introduced and is quite novel to us. This is on the back of trying to provide a tool for our frontline teams that would help them to resolve a potentially difficult customer situation. For example, if a service is delayed for over an hour, all of our frontline teams like drivers and station staff have a toolbox of things they can do and this is one of them – we call it ‘Francis’. We used to have ‘Franc’ which was ‘First Resolution Avoiding New Complaints’ and we wanted to take it to the next level. The other one was more manual so Francis is First Resolution of Avoiding New Complaints and Improving Service. Previously we would contact them and send them a journey code, with this one the driver can hand these out on board. The drivers can call our control centre and say they’d like to instigate ‘Francis’ because we’ve had a situation. The driver then hands these out with the incident number so the customer can then text us with their ticket number and the incident number, at which point we would then send a code back which is usually a discount journey code. It’s just a nice way for us to say that we’re sorry. We’re now looking at how we can take it to the next level by simplifying the process further for our customers. n www.coachandbusweek.com

DELAINE BUSES Family-owned Delaine Buses of Bourne, Lincolnshire has taken delivery of a 15-plate Wrightbus Gemini 2-bodied Volvo B9TL. The vehicle has replaced a Volvo Olympian and is the seventh vehicle of its kind in the operator’s fleet. Delaine bought the body direct from Wrightbus and the chassis direct from Volvo. The chassis, which incorporates a Volvo 9-litre Euro 5 engine, was built last year and has been in storage. The vehicle also has ZF Ecolife transmission and can seat up to 75 passengers.
Anthony Delaine, Managing Director, told CBW: “We also had the first B9TL registered in the UK, a 56-plate East Lancs Olympus. It had been displayed at the Euro Bus Expo in 2006. “The new bus also has its place in the history of the B9TL. It is the last B9TL chassis to be made for the UK market, along with the last Gemini 2 body to be built by Wrightbus. “However, it will not be the last Gemini 2 to enter service, as there are still stock vehicles which have yet to be sold.

The 12.5m vehicle from B.A.S.E Coach Sales joins a mixed fleet of 12 vehicles on a variety of work including local private hire and schools. “It’s popular with passengers as the wide entrance and dual doors enable rapid and safe loading,” said owner Andy Francis. “It’s performed very well since arrival and the drivers have been impressed with how quiet and solid it feels. You can tell it’s been built with the operator in mind as everything is easy to access and when you get close up it’s robustly built,

Maynes announce major fleet development Following on from several prestigious trade awards, Buckie-based coach operator Maynes has announced a major investment to its fleet by bringing a new coach direct from South Korea to the UK coach market. Maynes’ Director Kevin Mayne confirmed to CBW that after a trip last week to South Korea and meetings prior to the Euro Bus Expo show last year, an order for six 49-seater executive, Affa Lang, Korean Star Coaches and two of the 29-seater, Nae Lang Midi coach has been placed, with delivery scheduled to commence in time for the 2016 season. “Several of our current Plaxton Cheetahs, Neoplans and Van Hools will be replaced with the new arrivals coming,” Kevin commented. Managing Director Gordon Mayne also confirmed that: “Maynes will not only be the first UK operators for the Korean Stars, Maynes will also be the sole UK importer and UK dealer. “Maynes will also be changing the fleet colours to mark the arrival of the
new coaches, following feedback, a new blue livery will be re-introduced replacing the current silver. “It just goes to show how far the far eastern manufacturers have improved,” commented Director David Mayne. “Last year we trialled the Cumminsengined King Long 31 and 68-seater coaches. Feedback from passengers and drivers alike was outstanding. With the new Korean Stars we get a full seven years’ warranty, such is the confidence the Koreans have in their product, we have invested a huge sum to make this exciting development a reality.” Kevin added: “We are planning to use the local harbour to ship these coaches direct from South Korea to Buckie and are looking forward to this exciting challenge and introducing more of this prestigious marque to our fleet and supplying these coaches all over the UK in the years to come.” For more information visit www. maynes.co.uk or email info@maynes. co.uk.

The primary focus of the role requires the successful applicant to develop, produce and deliver training courses in line with the needs of the business, Transport for London and JAUPT. We are looking for a driven, innovative, focused person, who will be responsible for the management of ensuring that all our driving staff are Btec and CPC compliant and that training is provided to a small but dedicated team who will assist in the delivery of training courses.
