Is it worth bothering?
I
spotted this posting on Wrexham-based GHA Coaches’ Facebook page on Sunday morning and just had to reproduce it here verbatim: “IS IT WORTH BOTHERING TRYING? Maybe we should all just go to the pub and watch football. The negative comments posted on here and other bus companies’ pages are not helping motivate the staff who have gone into work to help dig out buses, (some on their days off) and have had to dig their own cars out or walk in to do so. EVERYBODY is doing their utmost to get buses running this includes Drivers, Managers, Council Gritters, etc. all doing their best. The amount of snowfall & fallen trees has been the main issue. However, the culture of compensation also has a part to play in deciding on sending buses out, the slightest skid and people are claiming whiplash claims.” I felt the posting summed up perfectly the challenges from the coalface for our industry in dealing with extreme snowfall, which in parts of the UK, has been the worst since 1963. I also liked the frankness, which a larger plc would probably never say – but the fact that by Monday morning the posting
had received 150 ‘likes’ clearly indicates it has struck a chord with many. ‘Back home’ in the Welsh borderland, as I write this, there is still no mobile phone signal and schools are shut. Therefore, even if you do take a vehicle out and you find yourself in difficulty, you’re in even more danger as in this day and age, you’ve potentially got no means to summon help. I would like to commend all those in our industry for making such a sterling effort – particularly juggling operational challenges vs. keeping the communications channels updated. GHA’s Charlie Williams also did our industry proud on the English and Welsh regional TV news. On a separate note, I would like to pay something of a tribute to Roger French, who as you’ll read on p4 has retired. I understand from a close friend that he’s also retired from his plethora of civic commitments too. I can’t say I blame him, for it’s all too easy in retirement to collect ‘little’ jobs, only to end up with little or no time to do the things you want to do. All the best Roger – we will miss you at B&H. Gareth Evans Editor

briefly Isle of Wight-based operator Southern Vectis has been forced to cancel the fourth Annual Bustival bus rally which was due to be held on Sunday April 7. Matt Kitchin, General Manager of Southern Vectis, said the decision to cancel follows warnings that the field where the event is usually held, in conjunction with the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet, is currently waterlogged. “We would rather play safe and cancel rather than see many fine examples of vintage vehicles stranded in mud,” explained Matt. “Bus enthusiasts will still find plenty of reasons to visit the island as we are now operating the scenic Needles Bus tour and for great views of the southern coast – the Downs Breezer service.” Scania is to hold its annual open sales event at Worksop on Wednesday April 10. Products and services on display will include new & used vehicles, Driver & technical training, Scania Finance, Parts & accessories, Aftersales and Repair & Maintenance. The venue can be found on Claylands Avenue, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, S81 7DJ. Hot food and refreshments will be served throughout the day. A spokeswoman for McGills politely asked to clarify the matter, when she told CBW: “It was in fact a member of our local management team – rather than a ‘concerned member of the public’ – who made contact with the police. The Depot Manager was concerned about the driver’s condition when interviewing him, following his return to the garage. He discussed his concerns with the local Area Manager and was instructed to call the police. After being breathalysed, the driver was arrested. We applaud the vigilant and highly responsible actions of our Depot Manager in this matter.” www.coachandbusweek.com

The Big Question p34
Budget: Fuel duty increase scrapped While corporation tax also sees a reduction, budget seen as doing little to help the coach and bus industry The chancellor George Osborne has scrapped the fuel duty increase scheduled for September in the Budget on March 20. He told MPs he had “listened to the people we represent” - singling out the work of FairFuelUK supporter, Robert Halfon MP, and would scrap the proposed fuel duty rise. He explained the Treasury had forgon £6bn of revenue as a result of scrapping a total of 13ppl in fuel duty over the past two years. The Road Haulage Association tweeted in response: “RHA pleased that September’s increase in fuel duty is cancelled. But we are STILL paying the highest level fuel duty in Europe.” The Freight Transport Association welcomed the Chancellor’s decision to cancel the fuel duty rise planned for September 1, but expressed disappointment that “the pleas of industry and consumers to reduce fuel duty have been ignored.” In its pre-Budget submission to the Chancellor, FTA said that in order to ease cost pressure on domestic freight activity and stimulate economic growth through
consumer demand, road fuel duty should be reduced by 3ppl, with commensurate reductions in the duty rate for gas oil. James Hookham, FTA’s MD of Policy and Communications, said: “While we are relieved that the immediate danger has passed, in order to get the UK back on the road to economic recovery it is vital that we have a cut in fuel duty and a long-term strategy to prevent future rises and uncertainty. “The Chancellor has once again squandered an opportunity to support UK industry, jobs and economic recovery, by failing to reduce fuel duty rates. “The Chancellor has bought some time for discussions with the

Roger retires from B&H Colleagues from across the bus industry gathered on the South Coast on Thursday to say a fond farewell to Brighton & Hove Managing Director, Roger French, on his retirement. Roger has been at the helm of Brighton’s buses for 30 years, overseeing huge passenger growth, trailblazing marketing and promotional activities, and building strong relationships with organisations across the city and beyond to put bus services at the top of business and political
Roger with his travel voucher agendas. In a packed town hall of over 200 guests, key speakers, including Norman Baker MP and David Brown, Go-Ahead Group Chief Executive, gave their tributes to Roger’s achievements, and a
industry. However, there must be a long term fix in gas fuel duty rates to provide the certainty needed to stimulate investment in low-carbon fuelled vehicles to the benefit of businesses and the environment.” CPT CEO Simon Posner said: “CPT is disappointed, although not surprised [given the current economic climate], at some of the opportunities missed – tax relief on season tickets, BSOG for coaches etc - in last week’s Budget statement. “The flip-side to this is we are relieved a number of measures which could have been taken, which would have adversely affected our members, did not come to pass. As is always the case at this time, there were a number of proposals flying around Whitehall until the last minute, but it wouldn’t be appropriate for us to comment on the details of them.” Adrian de Courcey, Director at Travel de Courcey, told CBW: “I don’t think the budget has done a huge amount for the coach and bus sector. As an industry we’re very heavily reliant on local authority funding and the budget has done nothing to address their cutbacks. “The scrapping of the fuel duty increase and the cut in corporation tax are welcome announcements, but I don’t think this is a game changer budget and it doesn’t do a lot for the industry.” standing ovation followed a moving farewell speech by Roger himself. For his final two weeks, colleagues made a DVD showcasing Roger’s time at Brighton & Hove, as well as naming a bus after him (the front of which now adorns his living room!). Roger was also presented with a world travel voucher from colleagues at the Go-Ahead Group; he has plans to travel around the globe in his well-earned retirement. The following day, Roger was presented with more gifts, including a specially-printed bus destination blind featuring all the locations he has worked at and a 1940s edition of Bradshaw’s Guide, made famous thanks to Michael Portillo’s TV series on the BBC.

Service cuts and fare rises on the horizon for Wales Potential service cuts and fare increases in Wales are looming as the Welsh BSOG cuts draw close. As well as changing how the key subsidy is calculated, the Welsh Government is reducing overall funding by 25%. Concerns about the drop in funding have focused on rural areas, where most services depend on BSOG subsidy. However, urban networks may also be at risk because companies will no longer receive a grant based on how much diesel their vehicles consume. The replacement grant will be calculated according to bus mileage. The Welsh Government said this ensured funding supports services which passengers want, rather than simply subsidising fuel. Cardiff Bus is evaluating new fuel-efficient buses to replace some of its older vehicles. It has also placed solar panels on one of its buses, to test whether this would cut operating costs. However, MD Cynthia Ogbonna warned that services were under review. “We have to look at our network provision and whether there’s scope for consolidation without totally cutting off anybody,” she said. “The amount we’re getting for BSOG rebate is reducing. We’re particularly vulnerable as a city operator. “Our mileage is quite low but our [fuel] consumption is very high because we operate in heavy traffic. If they’re going to pay BSOG not on
regional transport consortia will monitor the impacts of the new funding system in urban and rural areas. By Easter, the Welsh Government intended to authorise councils to punish misuse of bus lanes. “These additional powers will
enable local authorities to assist bus operators by reducing traffic congestion, easing traffic flows and thereby reducing costs,” she said. Matt Hemsley, Sustrans Cymru’s policy adviser, said the funding situation highlighted the need for more investment in bus lanes and bus gates. “It would keep the services flowing, with less impact on the amount of fuel that’s used,” he said. Council officers fear the reduced funding in place of BSOG for commercial services will put further strain on council resources. Commercial services cover most urban bus routes, including about 90% of Cardiff Bus’ network. Residents would expect councils to compensate for cuts to commercial services, which tend to cover the busiest routes, by paying operators to run replacement services under contract. However, councils’ own funding is also reducing, meaning they could strip out some bus journeys which are currently subsidised.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has retracted from its recent letter to bus operators who claim the Smart Ticketing uplift. The original letter dated March 1, 2013 sought operators claiming the uplift to confirm that they had updated their equipment to accept all of the new ENCTS Operator IDs (OIDs), which had all come into effect following the closure of ITSO Services Limited. The Department believed at six months post closure
of ISL that all ETMs should have been updated. However, ITSO Limited had reportedly not been fully informed of a number of issues and following the revelation that large numbers of ISAMs (ITSO Security Modules) had not been updated, the DfT emailed both operators and smart ticketing authorities stating the deadline would be postponed pending further investigation by ITSO Limited.
Cardiff Bus said it is reviewing its services despite measures to improve fuel efficiency. As a city operator fuel consumption is relatively high consumption but based on miles, it’s going to be difficult for us.” There have been warnings that significant cuts to services or increases in fares could further reduce passenger numbers on Welsh buses, which saw a bigger decline last year than buses elsewhere in the UK. The Welsh Government, which is funding a £4m Personalised Travel Planning scheme to inform people about alternatives to the car and contributing to improved urban bus infrastructure such as Swansea’s new £10m bus station, predicted that its new funding system will result in better services. “It is right that public money is used to support services which are attractive to passengers and not simply subsidise the fuel those services consume, as the current system does,” said a spokeswoman. “This is neither economically nor environmentally sustainable.” She said 2013-14 would be a transitional year, when councils’

briefly The 38th Annual CPT Conference – ‘A Framework for Growth’ is to be held at The Crieff Hydro Hotel in Perthshire on September 9/10. Over the course of the conference business sessions the aim is to examine different approaches to public transport regulation across Europe, identify lessons applicable to the Scottish model and ask what is really needed to enable patronage growth. For details, visit www. cpt-uk.org or call CPT Scotland on 0131 272 215. Plans have been approved to buy a final piece of land for Worksop’s new £3.2m bus station. Nottinghamshire County Council has agreed to press ahead with the purchase of a property on the corner of Newcastle Street and Watson Road, currently occupied by a florist and a several advertising hoardings. The authority has acquired part of Watson Road and the Queen Street public car park for the bus station project. CT Plus-owned Liberty Bus is splitting a route linking Jersey’s airport in the west to Le Marais Estate in the east to improve reliability. It will now be split into route 15 from airport to St Helier and 16 from Le Marais to St Helier. The change will come in as part of a the new spring timetable on March 31. The firm is also introducing extra servicing for tourists ahead of the summer season. These includes those connecting St Helier with St Brelade’s Bay and Corbiere.
Nottingham tops passenger survey Other leading areas include Oxfordshire and Devon, while Milton Keynes scored the lowest in Passenger Focus’ study Passenger Focus has released the results of its latest Bus Passenger Survey (BPS), revealing bus users in Nottingham are the most satisfied at 92%. Passengers in Milton Keynes were the least satisfied with a score of 73%. Overall satisfaction averaged 84%. Satisfaction with value for money ranged from 30% to 70% across the areas surveyed (averaging 54%). Anthony Smith, Passenger Focus CEO, said: “Each year some 2.3bn bus journeys are made in England
outside of London, meaning passengers are not satisfied with around 375m journeys. We hope this report will be a call to action for transport authorities and operators to better work together to improve things for passengers. In particular they should closely examine how the high level of passenger satisfaction in places like Nottingham, Oxfordshire and Devon has been achieved, and then look to replicate it.” The BPS surveyed 22,000 bus passengers across 20 areas of England and looked at many factors of passengers’ journeys. Key findings include: Satisfaction with punctuality ranged from 57% to 83%

(averaging 70%); The proportion of passengers who said they experienced behaviour which caused them to worry or make them feel uncomfortable during their journey ranged from 4% to 17% (averaging 10%); and The factors driving passenger satisfaction are broad, but often relate to the bus driver, in particular ‘smoothness/freedom from jolting’. The most prevalent drivers of dissatisfaction are ‘onbus journey time’, ‘safety of the driving’, ‘smoothness/ freedom from jolting’, and ‘length of time waited’. The BPS also showed lack of route information onboard buses scored the lowest out of 12 measures relating to on-board experience. Guide Dogs believes its Talking Buses campaign can help improve this. Guide Dogs’ Campaigns Manager, James White, said: “This is clearly an issue for all bus passengers, not just those with sight loss. A simple way to improve this would be the introduction of audio visual next stop and final destination on-board announcements, as called for by the Guide Dogs’ Talking Buses campaign. Only London has a comprehensive Talking Buses network, and Guide Dogs want this inconsistency to end.” Regarding Nottingham’s top score, NCT Marketing Manager

Anthony Carver-Smith said: “It’s testimony to the hard work of all our staff that we have achieved such high marks. Ensuring our passengers are happy with their whole journey is our main objective at NCT, which is why we have made significant investments into tracking and fleet management technology, driver training and new buses. It’s clear this investment, partnership working with the City and County Councils, combined with the dedication of the team to provide the best possible service is paying off which is excellent news.” Giles Fearnley, MD of First Bus, said: “It is great to see the improved value for money, which we have been offering in Sheffield since last summer, being reflected in the Passenger Focus results. I am certain that overall satisfaction in South Yorkshire will also show improvements in the next surveys following the partnership which was implemented across the Sheffield City Wide area in late October. This is just one of very many examples where we are working alongside our PTE and local authority partners to deliver improved bus services.” The full survey can be downloaded from http:// tinyurl.com/bq9bdqn

Scottish Green Bus Fund Results The winners of the latest tranche of Scottish Green Bus Fund (SGBF) have been announced, which is to be spit between Lothian Buses, SWestrans, Stagecoach and Secure Airparks Edinburgh. The bulk of the money – £1.5m – will go towards 20 single-deckers for Lothian. Asked to comment on speculation that 10 of them could be Van Hools, the firm said no decision had yet been made. Stagecoach Bluebird will also benefit, receiving £311,243 for three of the buses, while Secure Airparks Edinburgh and SWestrans, the regional transport partnership covering the Dumfries and Galloway area, will each receive £96,288 for one ‘green’ bus. It will take the total number in use to 95, following an initial investment when the SGBF was

Pictured is one of the BAE Systems ADL Enviro 400 Hybrids launched in September 2011 launched in 2010 which subsidised operators to purchase 70 of the ‘green’ vehicles. Scotland’ Transport Minister Keith Brown said: “ADL has told us that, thanks to initiatives like the SGBF, its business is now established as one of Europe’s leading suppliers of low carbon hybrid-electric buses, supporting 900 jobs in Falkirk. In addition to the environmental benefits, this is an investment in the future of Scottish jobs and engineering.
for First Cymru, said: “This is an exciting development for Swansea. It represents over £1m worth of investment in the city, further underlining our commitment to growing our business in this region. Each of the new buses has cost us in the region of £130,000, but this is worth every penny if we can use it to help grow patronage. “We hope people will get on board to try these new buses out.” In keeping with the move to refresh the existing the fleet, the new buses being used in Swansea feature the new First Cymru livery. All other buses in First’s local fleet are currently being repainted to match this look.
Baker recognises Sir Brian’s work Transport Minister Norman Baker has recognised the contribution of Sir Brian Souter in parliament. In debate about Quality Contracts (QC), Bill Esterson MP (Labour, Sefton Central) commented: “Sir Brian said he’d rather take poison than enter a QC. Is it not the reality that operators would rather maximise profits than look after the interests passengers? Should not the priority be to improve services, rather than to put more money into the pockets of the bus operators?” Baker replied: “If a firm does not look after its passengers, its services will suffer as a result. Sir Brian has contributed a great deal to the development of bus services in the UK, and that fact should be widely recognised by all. The hon. Gentleman should also recognise that legislation is on the statute.”

briefly A six-week scheme of bridge maintenance on the M3 in Surrey starts in April. The work under the bridge at Longcross, between junctions 2 and 3 will see existing temporary concrete and steel barriers upgraded with a new steel barrier to protecting the bridge supports. It will involve 24hour narrow lanes, a 50mph speed limit and overnight lane closures. The work takes place along the central reservation and verges of both carriageways, under the bridge. The restrictions will be installed from Tuesday, April 2 and are due to be removed on Sunday, May 12. Lane closures will be in place overnight between 1000 and 0530hrs every day. Organisers of the UK Coach Rally & Awards have hailed the reaction from the industry in terms of sponsorship and support as a “fantastic response.” Contributions in cash and in kind to help facilitate the event have been received from no fewer than 27 organisations from around the country and across the UK coaching and coach tourism industry. They include Alton Towers Resort, Arriva Bus & Coach, Base, Belmont International CoachSave, Bus & Coach Buyer, Bus & Coach Professional, Coach & Bus Week, Coach Touring, the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT), Dawson Rentals, Euro Ferries, Evobus, EVM, Group Travel World, Irizar, LTCOA, MAN, Moseley, Peel Outlets - Gloucester Quays, Pellys, Plaxton, Scania, Rawlings Insurance, RWT Commercial, Traffilog, Volvo and Wrightsure. UK Coach Rally Chairman, Stephen Telling, said; “Everywhere we look, the effects of the current deep recession are being felt across the industry at all levels. We are therefore delighted that so many organisations have chosen to support the combined event and their contribution is greatly appreciated. Whether they think of themselves as sponsors, supporters or partners, their involvement will help to underpin the success of such a prestigious event in the industry calendar. Whichever way you look at it, this is a fantastic response in the current climate.” www.coachandbusweek.com

Irizar delivers first coach with MagicEye technology System alerts drivers of safety issues and monitors fatigue and distractions Irizar has delivered the first coaches with Irizar MagicEye technology, a system which literally watches the driver’s eyes and warns of real-time driving safety issues. The MagicEye solution, developed by Datik, a subsidiary of Irizar Group, provides assistance, information and control to aid driving safety. MagicEye minimises the risk of drivers being distracted and helps
avoid collisions by detecting and predicting situations using artificial vision technology. The system includes: n Detection of pedestrians, cyclists and motorbikes n Vehicles, both stationary and moving n Detection of involuntary lane changes n Detection of obstacles and road signs n Safe distance calculation n Speed limit warnings n Driver fatigue and distraction alerts.
Irizar says the most important feature which makes it differ from other conventional products is the detection of driver fatigue and distraction. MagicEye monitors the driver’s eye movements along with the movements of the vehicle to look for abnormal actions which could lead to danger. If any danger is located, the system sounds an alert to avoid any collision. The system is comprised of a camera, a digital processor and a warning system which can either be audible, visual, or both. Other more selective alert mechanisms are

Restrictions applied to coaches in Stow on the Wold The Stow and District Civic Society, with backing from Stow Town Council, aim to avoid coaches using Digbeth Street in Stow on the Wold when exiting the Square, stating the street is old and narrow and “totally unsuitable” for large coaches. Appealing to operators, Tim Norris of the Stow and District Civic Society said if coaches entering the square drive straight to the assigned coach parking area, they
have little option but to proceed in that direction on departure. “Stow Town Council is proposing to introduce a restriction between St Edward’s Hall and Huffkin’s to discourage coaches,” he said. “But it is still necessary for coaches to circulate around the bus route to avoid this restriction, rather than turning around in the Square.” “We would request drivers follow the route shown on the attached
map in order to exit the Square via the High Street. This is the route followed by the coach company which operates the bus service.” “Longer term free parking for coaches is available in Maugersbury Road car park which can be accessed via Sheep Street and Park Street,” he added. “We hope this does not cause too much inconvenience, but Stow on the Wold was never designed for modern traffic and wishes to retain its mediaeval character.” Lacking a complete record of operators visiting Stow, copies of the leaflet have been placed in

It also includes image recording and a warning and event register, and transmits information to a central unit from a web platform which draws conclusions, processing all the information gathered to detect any driving offences. It plans the safest routes and optimises driving habits. Stewarts of Reading is the first customer in UK to purchase an Irizar i6 incorporating MagicEye. MD Andy Cotton said: “At the centre of Stewarts’ core values is safety; we cannot put a price on the safety of our customers and when Irizar told me they were working on this solution I immediately said that we wanted Stewarts to be involved. “Coach safety has improved massively over the last 10 years in terms of collision strength but nothing has happened in terms of driver monitoring. This system has taken a massive leap forwards in terms of thinking and we cannot wait to put this system on trial and work to further develop this device.” DATIK became part of the Irizar Group in 2011 and has recently developed a software platform for infrastructure management and optimum service planning that can be used for railways, trams and buses, and a platform for improving user mobility orientated around sports events, creating optimum routes based on a match calendar. Maynes takes immense pride in the appearance of its immaculate fleet
Maynes Coaches awarded for environmental best practice Maynes Coaches has recently been awarded four stars in the new Ecostars fleet recognition scheme. Kevin Mayne said the operator is very proud to be associated with the Edinburgh ECOSTARS Scheme and is one of the first Scottish coach operators to join up. ECOSTARS is a free, voluntary scheme providing recognition and support on environmental best practise to operators of goods vehicles, buses and coaches whose fleets serve Edinburgh. The scheme rates vehicles and fleet operation using a star system to recognise and improve levels of environmental performance. Kevin said: “Our company envisage many advantages to being part of this scheme. It goes further than the criteria that a lot of our existing clients expect from their coach supplier. This scheme will continue to enhance our credentials and keep our business at the forefront of Quality Assured
Scottish Coach Operations.” Edinburgh is the first local authority in Scotland to participate in the ECOSTARS scheme which has now been rolled out in Europe. “We already have one of the lowest levels of carbon emissions within the UK coach industry, but we understand the importance of reducing further,” Kevin continued. “Our touring coach fleet now all dates from no older than 2010. This ensures we meet the current European emission laws with our whole fleet having a minimum of Euro 4 and our more recent additions meeting Euro 5. “We will be working with ECOSTARS to raise our company four star award. Maynes Coaches is looking at various on-board telematics systems to further raise our ability to control and monitor fuel usage and vehicle performance. Doing so continues to show our commitment to clients and our care of the environment.”
Over-55s specialist Grand UK Holidays has added new UK holidays to its range, in addition to 29 fresh British tour options which were unveiled in its summer 2013 brochure. The new escorted tours include ‘Supersavers’ to North Wales, Scotland and East Anglia and a ‘Grand UK Gold’ holiday to Ireland. Sales Director Harold Burke said adding fresh holidays on the website means Grand UK can respond to booking trends and take advantage of good deals to pass onto customers. “People like to bag a bargain, and because our customers can get away on a whim without worrying about work, we’ve added to our Supersavers range to cater for this demand,” he said. “Our Supersavers offer great value, but we’re also adding to our ‘Grand UK Gold’ range which offers a more luxurious type of coach tour, as many people want to pamper themselves a bit. “We’re very lucky here to have such a wealth of tourism attractions on our doorstep, from the rugged mountain scenery of Scotland and Wales, to the beautiful landscapes of Kent – and we’re blessed with castles, stately homes and historic monuments. “The sheer diversity and number of attractions mean that holidaymakers can enjoy a range of different experiences within even a short break.” Find out more at www. grandukholidays.com
David Burch from CPT told CBW: “It is a sensible move, the streets are extremely narrow in the area and coaches are large vehicles. One of the biggest problems is when coaches come to circulate the market, they rely on the fact that other motorists have parked accordingly and this isn’t always the case. “The pick up and coach park is within range and we have had no comment or complaint from the local operators in the region.”

Optare’s joint work with Torotrak on the Flybrid mechanical flywheel hybrid (M-KERS) continues following successful testing with positive results
Torotrak buys 20% stake in Flybrid Automotive Positive results and costeffective reduction in fuel usage and emissions signifies huge potential in automotive sectors Torotrak has acquired a 20% stake in flywheel hybrid innovator Flybrid Automotive Ltd (formerly Flybrid Systems LLP) with an option to acquire the remaining shares before the end of this year. The transaction strengthens Torotrak’s ability to provide turnkey development and manufacture of complete flywheel hybrid systems for buses, trucks, passenger cars, commercial and off-highway vehicles. The company expects the deal will accelerate the adoption of its technology, which it said will be in fleet trials with bus operators later this year through an agreement with Wrightbus. Flybrid Automotive, a UK company owned by founders Jon Hilton and Doug Cross, already has a successful long-term relationship with Torotrak, which uses Flybrid’s proven flywheel module in its Mechanical Kinetic Energy Recovery System (M-KERS). Widely considered to be the world-leader in flywheel hybrid technologies, which can recover up to 70% of braking energy for around a third the cost of battery electric hybrids, Flybrid has evaluation www.coachandbusweek.com

or development programmes with a wide range of vehicle manufacturers worldwide. “As well as allowing us to accelerate the development of our M-KERS technology family, this acquisition will secure our access to what we believe is the most marketready flywheel system available,” said Torotrak CEO Jeremy Deering. “We now have the complete skill set, development resources and low-volume manufacturing expertise needed to help vehicle manufacturers, across a wide range of applications, introduce technology which allows them to significantly reduce CO2 emissions for a fraction of the cost and weight of conventional electric hybrids.”
Flybrid’s carbon fibre flywheel spins at up to 60,000 rpm in a near-perfect vacuum. Drive can be provided by the company’s CFT clutch-based transmission system or by Torotrak’s CVT (continuously variable transmission). Already proven in motorsport applications such as LMP1 sportscar racing, CFT KERS can provide up to 100 kW and 540 kJ of storage in a system with a full wet weight, including the electro-hydraulic control system, of less than 40kg. “CFT KERS scales down very well so could open-up a new market for small, low-cost automotive hybrids,” said Flybrid’s Jon Hilton. “It’s a good fit with Torotrak’s CVT, which is ideal for higher power systems and is
already central to several of our customer programmes.” Flybrid’s impressive portfolio of development programmes includes Volvo Cars (which uses Torotrak’s CVT), Wrightbus, two manufacturers of off-highway vehicles and several motorsport constructors. Evaluation programmes are ongoing with several other vehicle manufacturers across a wide range of sectors including passenger cars. Flybrid said if these relationships progress as planned, their technology could be specified for a production vehicle by 2016. Torotrak’s investment will provide additional resources to help secure this timing. Deering sees these relationships as also offering considerable potential to extend the reach of Torotrak’s other technologies, particularly the company’s high-efficiency transmissions and low-cost, variable drive pressurecharging system. “Working more closely together allows a unified approach to customers and a strengthened ability to support them from development engineering through to supply of product,” he commented. Hilton also sees synergies in technology and manufacturing. “Both technologies use high speed rotating assemblies of precision machined components and the electronic and hydraulic control systems are so similar a single control unit can be used to control either product,” he said. “These shared aspects will help the combined companies develop more

quickly and at a lower cost than either party could on its own.” Doug Cross, Flybrid’s co-founder and technical director, added: “Today’s investment means Flybrid will grow faster, get our products to market sooner and create more skilled jobs in the UK.” In an independent report on flywheel hybrid technologies, commissioned by Torotrak, Ricardo Strategic Consulting concluded pure mechanical flywheel hybrids promise similar fuel economy and CO2 benefits to electric hybrids but at around one third the cost. Looking in more detail at the issues associated with conventional electric hybrid technologies, Ricardo added: ‘The purely mechanical flywheel system also eliminates the cost and price instability of exotic metals, the endof-life costs of batteries, the need to train dealers and bodyshops to work safely with high voltages and several other significant penalties of traditional high-voltage solutions.’ The report forecasts: “In the heavy duty commercial vehicle market, pure mechanical flywheel hybrids appear to be one of the most costeffective powertrain technologies for reducing CO2.” This view is supported by E4tech, an independent research consultancy specialising in sustainable energy and low carbon vehicles (advisors to the DfT). Its research concludes Flybrid technology is well suited to the bus market, medium volume market entry in the commercial vehicle market and to some sectors of passenger cars, saying it can match or improve upon electric hybrid fuel economy improvements of at least 15%. Its view is the considerably reduced costs would enable it to become an established low carbon technology ahead of likely fuel cell mass-market adoption.
Affordable In passenger car applications, pure mechanical flywheel hybrid technology could reduce emissions of CO2 by up to 30 g/km at a cost of around £20 per gram, said Ricardo. This compares favourably with their estimate of £20 - £45 per gram for enhanced Internal Combustion Engine technologies and up to £90 per gram for electric hybrids. Jon Hilton believes CO2 reduction and fuel economy improvement, which are closely related, are by far the most urgent drivers across almost every vehicle sector.
NewsTorotrak.indd 11
“Passenger car manufacturers are now making decisions about which technology to invest in as they prepare for very challenging 2020 emissions targets in Europe and 2016 / 2025 fuel economy targets in the US,” he explained. “We believe purely-mechanical flywheel hybrids can significantly cut the cost of compliance using modular technology which can be quickly integrated and doesn’t require any enabling investments or other technology steps.”
Strong global market forecasts Torotrak expects the first application of pure-mechanical flywheel hybrid technology will be in the urban commercial vehicle market, where benefits are strongest and volumes can be managed through existing relationships. In the mid-sized UK bus market alone, there are 3,000 new vehicles each year and an existing fleet, with retrofit potential, of 50,000 vehicles. There are also substantial opportunities with other fleets operating a stop-start drive cycle – like urban delivery and refuse vehicles. In the passenger car sector, Ricardo forecasts penetration levels of 0.4% - 3.8% by 2020, offering potential volumes of up to four million units per year. As well as affordable hybrids, these could include high-performance cars where the ability to release energy very quickly (more quickly than batteries) provides an attractive, differentiating ‘press to pass’ function. Torotrak’s Jeremy Deering said the recent strengthening of the company’s high-precision manufacturing capability, together with joining forces with Flybrid’s own supply capability, means they can jointly support volumes from prototypes and fleet trials up to around 20,000 units a year, at which point the technology becomes attractive to global first tier partners: “We have the capability to work with vehicle manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers from specific application development through to medium volume supply; our strong financial backing will help establish a strong first to market position.” Jon Hilton concluded: “We are delighted by just how positive the consultants’ reports are, both about the market potential for flywheel hybrids and about the compelling performance of our technology.”
Allison’s £6m buys continued exclusivity with Torotrak Torotrak has concluded negotiations, under a Licence and Exclusivity Agreement (March 2009), with its licensee Allison Transmission, Inc. under which Allison will pay £6.0m for continued exclusivity to manufacture and sell Torotrak main drive transmissions in commercial vehicle market segments. This exclusivity excludes Torotrak’s other commercial vehicle licensees, Tata Motors and the European Truck and Bus manufacturer (ETBM). Allison has also subscribed for an additional 8,248,434 new ordinary shares in Torotrak at a price of 30.255p per share, representing a 20% premium to the average midmarket closing price of a Torotrak share for the 10 business days prior to the date of this announcement, raising approximately £2.5m. “Allison is committed to introducing fuel efficient, emissions-reducing technologies and our licensing decision with Torotrak reflects our determination to be a global leader in this field,” said Lawrence E. Dewey, Chairman, President and CEO of Allison Transmission, Inc. “We are pleased with Torotrak’s progression following the strategy announced in November 2012 and want to support the investment arrangements with Flybrid, which are forward-looking and offer good
growth potential.” The next step in Allison’s programme is to focus on a final design to optimise performance, size and weight. Torotrak is taking responsibility for core component testing and to establish a fully conformed supply into the Allison programme, helping to reduce lead times. Torotrak will also assist Allison with product design and validation process support in Europe. “We see big opportunities for our IVT Transmission to help reduce CO2 and cut fuel costs for commercial vehicle operators,” stated Torotrak Chief Executive Jeremy Deering. “Our own predictions of up to 20% fuel economy benefit on urban delivery trucks and buses, combined with a substantial reduction in NOx emissions, have been confirmed independently by our licensee, ETBM. We are also encouraged by technology developments which offer increased fuel economy savings for long haul applications. “The strategy of a more diversified company we set out in November, with greater control of its routes to market, has taken a significant step forward. The Allison agreement and our simultaneous announcement regarding Flybrid, represent collectively an important milestone and I believe a true turning point for Torotrak.”

Cape Town’s Optare Solos enter service Buses are step-free with ramps and audio door alerts for blind and disabled passengers SOUTH AFRICA Cape Town’s first easy access buses, Optare Solo SRs, started operation this month. They have been welcomed by blind and mobility impaired residents living on the MyCiTi route from Civic Centre to Walmer Estate and Salt River. The route provides connections to the Cape Town and Salt River railheads as well as the city and other MyCiTi routes from Civic Centre station. It created an operating challenge as the historic District Six, Walmer Estate and Woodstock suburbs are situated on the slopes of Table Mountain. They have twisting, narrow, congested streets with steep inclines and sharp corners. A conventional bus chassis could not cope with these demands. The UK-manufactured, South African assembled Optare Solo SR provides the necessary manoeuvrability because of its minimal front overhang, low floor and nine-metre length. The vehicle accommodates 50 passengers, 25 seated. It is powered by a rearmounted Euro 5 Cummins diesel engine and is highly compatible with the Allison automatic

transmission fitted for its suitability for stop-start operations and smooth gear changes. The low-floor vehicles have boarding ramps and no steps so boarding and alighting is at pavement level. Coupled with samelevel docking at MyCiTi stations, this offers ease of access for all, including the elderly, wheelchair users and mothers with prams. Jeremy Opperman, who is blind, spoke on behalf of many with disabilities: “The tactile paving helps us find our way and audio signals alert us when the bus doors open. The new service lets me get to town, the waterfront and the
airport independently.” “To guarantee success, we worked closely with the operating companies and released 20 vehicles early for driver training,“ said Malcolm Wilken, General Manager, Western Cape of Busmark 2000. The company is assembling over 200 Optare Solo vehicles at its Elsies River factory, creating 150 new jobs. The order, together with the partnership with Busmark 2000, is Optare’s largest ever export order. Potential for future such orders exists both in Cape Town and in other South African cities which are studying the new buses closely. “It is clear there is a need for a good, reliable public transport service in these areas, and that MyCiTi has all it takes to fulfil this need,” said Cape Town Councillor Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater.
Busmark 2000 is assembling over 200 Optare Solos at its Elsies River site and spin-out during critical driving situations. In North America, government mandates for ESC are anticipated to come into force from the beginning of 2016. WABCO can now uniquely deliver hydraulic as well as pneumatic ABS with ESC systems for manufacturers of commercial vehicles of sizes from Class 5 to 8. “WABCO is the first supplier to bring the advancement of hydraulic anti-lock braking systems integrated with electronic stability control to the CV market,” said Nikhil Varty, WABCO President, Americas. “Having adapted these systems to meet North American market requirements, ahead of the anticipated ESC legislation coming into effect in 2016, WABCO can offer OEMs the broadest range of options in safety technology.” From 2014, WABCO will roll out
its hydraulic ABS in combination with ESCsmart, WABCO’s newest generation of electronic stability control which uses computational simulation to achieve ESC technical validation on trucks and buses. WABCO’s ESCsmart is designed to be programmed on the assembly line, enabling new vehicles to be driven away immediately. The hydraulic ABS with ESC also requires 30% less mounting space and weighs 20% less than its current hydraulic braking systems. ESCsmart significantly reduces time and labour currently required by the traditional approach to ESC technical release. ESCsmart’s enhanced functionality also offers a continuous “self-learning” capability for operators as the system continuously monitors vehicle characteristics and automatically self-adjusts.
Stagecoach invests over $20m in US coach fleet USA Stagecoach Group is investing more than $20m in 51 new coaches to raise the profile of its growing operations in North America. Three key operating subsidiaries, based in Ohio, Chicago and New Jersey, are to share the deliveries – which begin this month. Lakefront Lines of Ohio, acquired last year by Coach America, is to get 10 new MCI J4500 coaches. Chicago’s Van Galder Bus Co., which ran 4.8m service miles last year, also receives 10 MCI J4500s. The company operates 36 of these coaches on daily services to O’Hare Airport and downtown Chicago. Shortline, the subsidiary based in Mahwah, New Jersey takes the remaining 31 vehicles which are MCI D4505 coaches. First Glasgow has unveiled plans for SimpliCITY, a new bus network for Glasgow which launches on May 26. As a result of its public consultation, First confirmed it has made over 12 changes to its original proposal. The company received more than 8,000 visits to its online consultation and more than 500 people submitted comments. MD of First Glasgow, Ronnie Park, said: “I’d like to thank all those who took part in our consultation. We wanted to be open and transparent about our plans and ultimately put in place a network which meets the needs of the overwhelming majority of our customers. “We’ve held talks with SPT and engaged with politicians and other stakeholders across our network. We’ve listened to our customers and carefully considered every piece of feedback we’ve received during the consultation. As a result I’m pleased we’ve been able to revise some of our plans. “At the outset we said SimpliCITY will improve and simplify the network for the majority of our customers. I believe our original plans have been strengthened as a result of the consultation and even more passengers will benefit.” First has made the following amendments to its original plan: Service 11 – On a six-month trial basis First Glasgow will retain the Clydebank – Anniesland section of the route operating as it does currently, every 30 minutes. Service 19 – First will retain the current route. In addition evening services from Summerston to the city centre will now be retained, as will evening services from Blairdardie (19A) to the city centre. Service 21 – Retains a 15-minute frequency during the morning and evening peak hours. In addition, First will retain the evening service to Gardenhall which had been scheduled for withdrawal. Service 36 – Early morning buses to Cumbernauld used by workers to Westfield Industrial Estate will be retained. Service 4/4a – The plan to reduce the service to Newton Mearns from 20 to 30 minutes has been amended and will retain the current frequency in peak hours. First will increase the number of buses to Jordanhill and Knightswood from three to four per hour. In Cumbernauld First will still withdraw Service X80, but will www.coachandbusweek.com

The future of route 127/128, which serves Guilden Morden, Bassingbourn and Royston, has been secured after a new operator
was found. Cozy Travel has agreed to take over the route when the contract with current operator Charter Travel is terminated at the end of March. Bassingbourn’s County Councillor, Linda Oliver, said: “It really is terrific news. You hear so many negative stories about local transport but I never had any doubt we would be able to find a new operator.” Cozy Travel takes over the route on April 2, and Cllr Oliver said the timetable will remain largely unchanged, with only a few “minor tweaks”. She said: “Reliability is the most important thing and it’s great we’ve been able to secure a well-known local company to take over. Most of the people who use this bus don’t have a car so it really is a vital service. “There will be some sadness because the passengers have got to know the drivers so well over the years, to the extent that some of them exchange Christmas cards, but I’m sure new relationships will form.”

Up to 20 youths – some as young as 12 – have been arrested by Sussex Police for attacking Brighton & Hove buses. Damage included smashed windows, punched holes in the ceiling, names scrawled across seats, broken emergency cords and more. The gang, made up of both girls and boys with ages ranging from 12 to 19, also placed traffic
cones in Lewes Road so cars were forced to swerve. Brighton Magistrates’ Court has started processing the defendants. Three 15-year-old girls who pleaded guilty for their part in damaging the bus were ordered by the court to pay £200 each in compensation plus costs and all three were given Youth Referral Orders. An 18-year-old female and a 19-year-old male were given an eight-week suspended sentence and ordered to pay £200 compensation and £50 costs. The male also received 120 hours of unpaid work and the female a 12-month community order, part of which will address her alcohol problem, along with a 12-week curfew between 1900 and 0500hrs. Sergeant Dave Bennett, Brighton Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “We decided the best way to tackle the problem was to work closely with our partner agencies and share information in order to try and identify the main ring leaders of the gang. “Pictures of individuals were circulated to bus drivers who then banned them from getting onboard, restraining orders were put in place and applications to the council for anti-social behaviour orders for one of the gang have been applied for with another two being prepared. “With essential input from different agencies, enough information was then gathered to charge several of the gang with causing over £9,000 worth of damage to a Brighton and Hove City bus in January.”

Shopkeepers have rallied to support a proposed bus lane through Mitcham town centre. The bus lane would form part of the £6.2m Rediscover Mitcham Project to revitalise the area but the proposal has divided opinion. While some residents and businesses are strongly opposed to the plans, others have said they would welcome it. The council predicts an increased footfall in the area by 6,000 people per day. A petition in support of the plans has attracted the signatures of 34 businesses in the town centre including Morrisons, Boots, Halifax and Lloyds TSB. Its creator, shopkeeper Vijay Patel, claimed problems began for shopkeepers when the area was first pedestrianised nearly two decades ago.

He said: “People who have bags will be able to get home more easily and it will be more convenient for people to stop in. “There’s been a decline because what happened is that big businesses want visibility. If there’s no visibility there’s no business. “You may have a great shop and ideas but ideas will not be any good to shop owners or for marketing because no one can see it.” Overall plans for the Rediscover Mitcham Project were approved by the council’s Street Advisory Management Committee (SMAC) last month, but plans for a bus lane were opposed by councillors. Merton Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, Andrew Judge, decided to go ahead with the plan calling it a “balanced solution which takes into account the need for an active, vital and prosperous town centre as well as the need to preserve coherent green space”. The decision has since been called in by opposition councillors with the Sustainable Communities Overview & Scrutiny Panel voting to re-consult on the plans.

the Workshop area features 100+ Stands showcasing everything from OE components and replacement parts to maintenance management systems, garage and workshop equipment. It is organised jointly by the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) and IRTE Services Ltd, the trading company of the SOE (Society of Operations Engineers). The event takes place between Tuesday April 9 to Thursday April 11, with the doors open 0830 – 1730hrs on all three days. To gain quicker entry to the

Bridgestone
Stand 5D30 Bridgestone has a host of new products, initiatives and seminars being presented over the show. The company is demonstrating
its class-leading Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, its internetbased inspection tool T2i as well as offering industry seminars across a range of subjects. Visitors can also experience bespoke video content through the use of the Aurasma app. Simply point a mobile device at appointed images and logos on the stand and wait for the video to begin. The app is available from Google Play and iTunes. Along with new steer and drive axle tyres, visitors to the Bridgestone Stand will be introduced to the company’s Total Tyre Care initiative. Responding to the on-going battle for fleets to maximise performance while minimizing cost, Bridgestone has created a range of complementary truck tyre programmes designed to offer peace of mind to fleet operators. Built around three management pillars: Total Tyre Life – aiming to lower the cost of truck tyre ownership by reducing the cost per kilometre over the whole tyre cycle, Total Tyre Service – a package which ensures fleets operate at maximum efficiency through the use of Bridgestone’s Truck Point network, and Total Tyre Systemsproviding fleets with clear visibility

of their tyres’ conditions at all times. With the economic and environmental challenges fleet operators continue to face, Bridgestone has sought to overcome these obstacles by creating Trisaver – a new truck and bus tyre manufacturing technology created to enable reduction in costs, resources and CO2 emissions by adopting a new innovative approach to the manufacturing process.
Town and Country Covers
Stand 4E130 Town and Country Covers has extended its range of protective seat covers to include the MercedesBenz Actros and Axor trucks as well as the new MAN TGS and DAF LF range of vehicles. UK Sales Manager Steve May says Town and Country has taken the decision in response to demand. “The single greatest cause of wear on a vehicle seat is that caused by the driver entering and leaving the vehicle,” he said. “Fitting protective seat covers not only provides a cleaner, safer driver environment but also helps to protect the residual value of the vehicle. Anyone who thinks fitting seat covers is expensive should carefully consider the far more costly option of not fitting them.” Town and Country Covers is also highlighting its range of minibus seat covers with tailored-to-fit seat covers for Ford Transit, Renault Master and LDV Maxus. n Email Laurence Killick at laurencekillick@ townandcountrycovers.com

Continental
Stand 5G80 Continental is launching all-axle bus and coach tyres - Conti Coach, Conti CityPlus and Conti Urban, as the first tyres to be introduced in its Generation 3 range. Each new Generation 3 tyre has been designed to meet the challenges specific to its application. Conti Coach, for long distance coach operations, has been engineered to provide excellent rolling resistance, giving greater fuel economy and higher mileage compared to its predecessor. The Conti CityPlus for regional or intercity applications has the addition of a thicker sidewall to protect the tyre from damage as well as enhanced wet braking capabilities throughout the life of the tyre provided by the new 3D tread structure. The Conti Urban, for inner city use, benefits from a thicker sidewall and an innovative tread compound designed expressly to combat the challenges of inner city roads and also benefits from reduced rolling resistance. Continental will also showcase its HSR2. Suitable for both regional and long distance applications, the HSR2 combines economy with extended tyre life, while providing a more comfortable ride quality for both driver and passengers. The design features a durable casing with a 4-ply triangular belt and a bead structure with steel cord reinforcement, which reduces rolling resistance to deliver fuel savings of up to 5%. Increased sidewall stability provides improved handling and
air pressure loss is also reduced by 50% through the use of Continental’s AirKeep technology, resulting in better fuel consumption and longer tyre life. The high tread volume is designed to allow for re-grooving to extend mileage by up to 20%. Also available is the Continental HSW2 Coach, the first winter tyre specifically designed for use on coaches. This tyre ensures maximum safety for passengers and the vehicle in a wide range of conditions and the numerous sipes reaching down to the base of the tread guarantee a high level of traction on wintry roads during the whole life of the tyre. The design of the tread pattern makes the HSW2 Coach suitable for use on all axles of a coach. Further flexibility comes from the fact that it can be used all year round, removing the costs of changing and storing tyres on a seasonal basis. Like the HSR2, this tyre also uses AirKeep technology to prevent gradual loss of inflation pressure. n Email Tracey Hyem at tracey. hyem@conti.de

Lombard
Stand5C78 A White Paper commissioned by Lombard, the asset finance provider, to explore implications of the introduction of Euro 6 at the end of 2013 issues a stark conclusion: UK commercial operators have a crucial window of opportunity in the first half of 2013 if they are to avoid being open to substantial financial penalties with no operational benefit. From January 1, 2014, any new vehicle registered must comply with Euro 6 and with manufacturers’ order books already filling up, time is running out for those who have not planned ahead. Lombard’s commercial transport team has been working with fleet managers to help identify the most cost-effective methods of acquisition but the consensus is that too few have formulated a strategy. With the prospect of Euro 6 vehicles costs being 1012% higher than Euro 5 vehicles, businesses will come unstuck if they do not act soon. n Email Karyn Theron at karyn. theron@lombard.co.uk

Sterli Koni
Stand 4A10 Stertil Koni is highlighting a new high speed mobile jack. The 600kg capacity VLT6 jack provides excellent versatility and total safety during lifting and handling operations under raised vehicles. It has been designed and developed to offer a unique combination of features including compactness, versatility and ease of use. The jack’s threestage telescopic cylinder ensures a minimal closed height of only 720mm which, in turn, allows simple positioning and manoeuvrability. Also, five support legs, incorporating robust wheels and brakes, ensure unrivalled stability for complete user confidence. During a typical lifting operation, a service engineer uses the jack’s foot-operated pump to raise and lower heavy and awkward components beneath raised vehicles. For those applications where an increased speed of operation is required, the jack may be operated and controlled simply by using a compressed air line. The VLT6 also features a range of specially-designed interchangeable support heads which can be selected depending on the shape and size of the component or assembly being handled. Offering reliable lifting at heights up to 1915mm, the new jack enables totally safe, accurate and hands-free positioning of loads weighing up to 600kg. During extensive tests in commercial garages and workshops, many traditional two-man repair and servicing operations were completed efficiently by a single engineer using the VLT6.

THE BIG QUESTION › BUSK
Promoting safe travel Andrew Cream speaks to coach operators around the country about the benefits of the BUSK Simply Safe and Benchmark schemes
A
fter receiving news of both Stanley Travel and Sleafordian gaining six stars in BUSK’s Benchmark scheme, we decided to explore what BUSK’s Simply Safe and Benchmark accreditations mean. I thought it would be wise to speak with BUSK’s founder, Pat Harris. She explained why these schemes are important, for both operators and customers, and what operators have to do to become part of them. “It’s such a simple idea,” Pat said. “It’s all about safety compliance. Never before has there been anything available for operators to say ‘we are safety compliant’, and that’s what Benchmark is.” Both schemes have been designed so operators can go to schools and show off their safety credentials. You’ll read that companies are finding schools often just go for the cheapest option when choosing a coach operator, but BUSK aims to change that way of thinking. “The industry has really backed the schemes,” she continued. “They are fed up that schools and Local Authorities often just go for the cheapest option without any questions asked.” Pat said the accreditations give operators the opportunity to promote their companies in a different way. “Schools are reluctant to change their processes. By joining Benchmark operators are given a template to work from. It’s about www.coachandbusweek.com

gradually getting information out to teachers. “We also directly help companies with their marketing. This includes sending mail shots out to schools and advertising in school directories and magazines.” There are currently just over 100 Simply Safe and over 70 Benchmark members, with over 40 application forms waiting to come back, but Pat says not every operator can become a member. “We have improved the standards you need to get in,” she said. “We ask for O-licence numbers

and MOT pass rates. “It’s easy to become a member – provided you are a reputable company and you are safety compliant.” As the charge for an annual fee is relatively small compared to other industry bodies, at £144 per year for Simply Safe and an additional £60 for Benchmark membership, Pat says she has no qualms about removing operators if they no longer reach the standard required. In fact, since Benchmark was launched last year, one member has been removed. Looking ahead, there are hopes to get more operators on board in Ireland. And in two years from now, Pat anticipates they will have around 500 members.
Kevin Brown Managing Director, Woods Coaches Like most independent companies our business looks for ways to stand out from the crowd. Being a member of BUSK first of
all means we can be recognised as an operator which meets the high standards set by BUSK. Secondly, it gives us an opportunity to market ourselves too, with a positive message to shout about. This can be difficult to do on your own. Being a member of BUSK reinforces our professional and quality message.
Dean Marshall Partner, Marshalls Coaches We noticed the logo on another operator’s vehicle and wanted to find out more. We decided it’s an organisation we wanted to be involved in. What BUSK promotes is of paramount importance to us. Plus, the Benchmark scheme is helping us to raise our own safety levels. promote the fact that we comply with stringent criteria that school teachers and governors should also be compliant with; this is to say that obtaining three quotes and utilising the cheapest operator is just not good enough. Schools have an obligation to check the operator has everything in place to cover the safety of their pupils from approved drivers to full maintenance plans.
Karen Lockyer Coach Hire and Tours Sales Manager, Chalkwell We joined right at the beginning. I think it’s important schools and teachers know that responsibility does not just lie with the coach hire company. It’s about being safe and we should be proud about it. We tick all the boxes when it comes to safety as well as going beyond that. Other operators may be cheaper than us but we are putting our hands up and saying we do care. We are also in the process of displaying the BUSK logo on our coaches.

Terry McIntyre Director, Golden Boy We are involved in CoachMarque, but that’s more about quality rather than safety. A lot of our clients are school groups so we are pleased to be involved with it and we have had a lot of positive response from it already. It’s such a competitive industry and none more so than the schools market. The BUSK accreditation highlights why our costs are higher. It’s a way of explaining that in a simple manner.
Paul Barringer Sales & Marketing Director, Lucketts A scheme such as BUSK, which promotes the safety initiatives and standards of its members, has an importance in helping provide independent verification of our compliance to industry standards, therefore providing customers, existing and prospective, with the reassurance that they are choosing an operator for the transport of their young people which ticks all

Gavin Bennett Workshop Manager, Bennetts Coaches We became part of Simply Safe and Benchmark to prove we are a reliable, genuine and responsible operator. It gives schools piece of mind. We are one of the few operators in our area with a sixstar rating. It shows we have got things in place if anything goes wrong. BUSK checks all areas of the company including first aid, CRB and age of fleet. Peter Shipp Chairman, EYMS We are keen to do anything we can to promote responsible operating. We have found schools tend to look for the cheapest but the cheapest option is not always the best. It’s about trying to do things properly. It’s very useful to have accreditations like this with independent checks and it’s important for parents to see. It’s often very difficult for a school to know what they are hiring and the fact that one trip goes well doesn’t mean the next will.
Tina Shaw-Morton Director, Woods Travel Woods Travel has been in the passenger transportation business for over 42 years as a family run concern. We pride ourselves on providing a customer focused service with safety as the highest priority. Having the BUSK Simply Safe accreditation will not only help promote the safety credentials of our company but will also raise the standards expected by customers across the industry making coach passenger travel safer for everyone. Roddy Perryman Operations Manager, Perryman’s Buses The thing which caught our attention was BUSK’s ‘Challenge Cheap Coach Hire’ campaign. We have been frustrated with groups, not just schools, going for the cheaper options. We completely support what the scheme is doing, that is, making coach travel safer for children. If it can gain more clout with the government and Local Authorities that would be great. It was a no brainer for

me – I didn’t have to think about it whatsoever. It’s what we are all about. If joining the scheme gains us one or two jobs that’s great, but ultimately it is making travel safer for all by reducing the amount of incidents. We feel there has already been incoming calls from groups which might not have called in the past and it may well be down to our involvement with BUSK.
Andy Cotton Managing Director, Stewarts Coaches It’s a great tool for operators to differentiate themselves and show they are safe and reliable. It’s highlighting the issues of seatbelts and the safety of children.
Robert Easton Director, Eastons Coaches This scheme keeps the standards up across the board. It helps us keep travel safe within the industry. We also like to be at the top of the ladder when it comes to safety and we have sent letters out to schools to promote the scheme.
Sarah Tomlinson Schools Liaison Officer, Sleafordian Coaches Sleafordian Coaches is determined to heighten awareness of the issues regarding safe transport for children and has an ongoing desire to be at the forefront of any initiative which supports schools in making safe and informed decisions about school coach hire. The BUSK Simply Safe scheme provides a long-awaited “tool kit” to educate and advise schools on transport safety to enable the schools to use reputable and compliant coach operators. Simply Safe is an integral part of encouraging schools to think beyond price and to focus on safety when organising school transport. It is important that those operators who do run a quality and fully compliant service have a means to demonstrate this to schools. The BUSK scheme is independent, so rather than operators just telling schools they are good, this can now be demonstrated by approval on the Simply Safe Scheme as it is only awarded to coach operators who meet the highest safety standards after they have provided documentation on vehicle maintenance, safety inspections and MOT pass rates. It is not just the school staff who

need to have an understanding of the importance of using safe transport providers although it is frequently the case that the decision-making process for hiring one operator against another is made by teachers and administrators. Ultimately the school governors could be held responsible if they don’t understand the ramifications of meeting the collective responsibility of providing safe transport, and to do so, the Simply Safe Scheme provides all the necessary information. Even in these days of austerity, budgetary constraints must not allow safety to be compromised. Coach travel is comparatively safe when using the services of a reputable operator which observes safety rules and meets all of their compliance requirements. Parents trust schools to make transport arrangements for their children based on safety criteria and not one of cost. Quite simply the BUSK Simply Safe and Benchmark Star
Richard Grey Managing Director, Grey’s of Ely It’s about making your business stand out. We have promoted it with the schools, handed out packs for them to understand it and have written to heads and governors in a carefully tailored letter. We don’t want to tell them what to do, but instead help them make the right decisions. We can also back up the scheme with other accreditations. It’s important that there is an independent audit process. It’s about trying to make it simple for schools. It allows them to have a procurement system in place – some schools don’t map that across to transport requirements. It’s a very good thing and helps us give schools the information they need in an easy and understandable format. Rose Williams-Price Operations Manager, Williams Coaches Achieving the BUSK Simply Safe accreditation is recognition for prioritising high safety standards within the company. Williams Coaches has been transporting school children for over 50 years and has always had strong beliefs that schools and teachers should never compromise the safety of their pupils for cost. BUSK, along with the accreditation we have achieved, has been promoted throughout schools in the area with the aim of teachers raising their expectations of coach companies, and not simply accepting the cheapest quote.
Sleafordian says Simply Safe is vital to getting schools focusing on safety

EYMS WORKS WITH ITO WORLD TO PROVIDE BUS STOP INFORMATION EYMS has chosen ITO World’s ITO Go automated data system to provide bus stop information in its operating area. When East Riding Council decided to stop producing bus stop information, EYMS needed to react quickly. Bob Rackley, MD, EYMS, said: “Bus stop timetables were the unfortunate victim of local authority austerity measures, but EYMS was committed to ensuring quality information about services was still made accessible to passengers. In order to deliver this ourselves we knew we needed a fully automated and reliable data system which could be quickly and easily understood and implemented by staff. “After undertaking some initial research we contacted ITO World to ask for their advice as we knew they had worked with other councils to help support the provision of bus stop information and, after a trial, we were delighted to implement their automated data system, ITO Go.” ITO Go has been developed to help ensure bus operators and councils can keep passengers moving without the luxury of a large team of people to create and manage bus stop posters and information displays. Using ITO Go, posters can be generated from a selection of bus
stop templates in around one minute using a clear and simple web-based interface with the option to export as a PDF or print immediately. The posters can feature a map where no visual guide existed before. Extra information can also be added to the posters, including QR tags which let passengers download maps and real-time information to their phones. ITO GO is a web-based solution where ITO World hosts the product and clients access it through the cloud using a standard browser; there is no need for any new software, installation or maintenance. Clients can also opt for a solution which matches their brand and style requirements. ITO and EYMS worked

together to design a selection of custom templates. Datasets were then tested and evaluated until the first posters appeared. Claire Robinson, Marketing Manager, EYMS, said: “ITO really did help to make it easy to adopt the system, they were available at all times with support but we needed minimal training. Once the system was installed it was a case of trying a few different styles and then moving straight into the implementation, which has all run smoothly.” Rackley added: “It makes such a difference to customers, especially those who are new to the area or more vulnerable. They can now quickly find the details they want and it builds confidence and complete peace of mind for any journey.”
EYMS chose the ITO Go fully-automated system for its bus stop information

Parma Industries has introduced a new Prolock wheel nut security system to its range. The Small Prolock, which has been developed in response to customer demand, will fit vehicles with a 16” twin wheel with a six-stud 205mm PCD stud pattern. The most common vehicles to use this wheel in the UK are the Mercedes Sprinter and the Iveco Daily. Marc Pittock, Sales Manager, said: “Prolock has been proven to prevent wheel loss in larger vehicles for many years now and through customer feedback we realised there was a need for the smaller size which we have now developed.”

Paying the price for increasing fares David Sidebottom, Director of Passenger Focus, discusses the perception bus passengers have of fare prices and the ease of obtaining single and return prices
www.coachandbusweek.com
OpenPlatform.indd 40
Information on saver fares, such as day tickets, are easier to obtain than single and return fares expect the bus to wait while you run through it all with the driver.” n “It would be helpful if you had information on the cost of the bus journey at the bus stop. Numerous times, I have been charged different prices, wrong destination put on ticket.” We tried to compile a list of sample bus fares for a dozen areas in England, but much of time we had to telephone each bus operator as single and return fares are rarely shown online. On one occasion after several ‘wrong numbers’ we were put through to a bus depot, where a helpful inspector questioned off-duty drivers in the rest room and got us the answer. Most companies show their weekly, monthly and longer season tickets and some of their ‘Rover’-type fares online, but not singles and returns. It is not a matter of commercial confidentiality if you can wait for the next bus and ask the driver – so why the reluctance of so many operators to share this basic information online? If the reason is to do with the vast number of fares on offer, that’s even more reason to publicise them so nobody gets a surprise and has to delay the bus while they search for an additional pound coin. The absence of fares information is inexcusable in areas where the exact fare has to be tendered as drivers do not give change. The need for advance information on fares will become even more important as smart technology is rolled out across the country. Currently only in a small number of areas, it
seems inevitable that the Oyster-style smartcard will replace the inefficient cash payment system. Passengers already see the benefit to changing over – a number of respondents in the BPS mentioned it. One example was: n “Buses are delayed too long at bus stops by customers who do not have the correct fares or pre-paid tickets. In my opinion, bus drivers should not accept money. All tickets should be pre-paid like the Oyster cards in London. This would improve journey times.” A word of caution though – smartcards are not the entire solution. Visitors to an area need a way to access transport when travel offices are shut. If different operators have different technology, they may not be valid right across an area. And simplifying the fare structure to allow for smartcard payment can see fares go up. Passengers will not appreciate being charged higher fares to achieve ‘simplification’ and they would have every right to be indignant. If you want to let off some steam, just tap away at the keyboard and send your rant (or carefully-reasoned views) to gareth. evans@coachandbusweek.com, or fax 0845 280 2927. stuart montgomery
With all news focusing on the increase in rail fares, it seems to have gone largely unnoticed that some bus passengers are facing even steeper hikes. These are just some of the comments we received when talking to passengers for the last round of the Bus Passenger Survey (BPS): n “The bus fares are too high.” n “A weekly pass is good value for money but child prices/child weekly tickets are... expensive and often mean we cannot use the bus en-famille.” n “...it is so expensive – £2.20 for a single, for a ride of 10 minutes or less.” Department for Transport statistics tell us, from September 2011 to September 2012, bus fares in England increased on average by 6% – way above the rate of inflation (2.6%). Passengers do not pay average fares though, and no record of all individual fare rises is available centrally. Indeed, as we mention below, it can prove very difficult to find basic bus fares at all in some parts of the country. It is true that in some areas the reverse is true and fares have gone down, as in the case of some weekly tickets for routes in Manchester and Northampton. However, our 2012 BPS tells us that, on average, only just over half of passengers (56%) think they are getting value for money. The score ranged from 39 to 68% depending on where you are in the country, and 44 to 66% depending on age – older passengers tended to report higher scores. The bus industry is facing a number of economic pressures, including the overall decline in journeys made by bus in many parts of the country and a cut to the fuel tax rebate (Bus Service Operators’ Grant). Part of the problem is that regular passengers waiting at the bus stop may know what fare to expect to pay, but new passengers – people new to the area, or the young teenager preparing to take their first solo journey – may find discovering the fare in advance quite hard in some places. Some passengers told us: n “The information online is poor...I have been paying cash each day because I do not know what other saver tickets are available. The advice online is to buy from the bus driver but if you do not know what you want/need, you cannot

Oz driver delivers TV – using his bus A bus driver in Adelaide has been suspended after he allegedly used his empty vehicle to deliver a new TV to his house. The 30-year-old male, a finalist for the Young Australian Bus Driver of the Year competition last year, allegedly posted pictures on Facebook of a new flat-screen TV in its box outside the bus in a residential street – Adelaide Now reported. The photos on Facebook also showed the TV box inside the bus, with captions ‘Home delivery with style!’ and ‘How else to get my TV home, than in a bus?’ The driver was suspended by Light City Buses after it was alerted to the images. A spokeswoman said this was the first time the firm was aware of the alleged inappropriate use of one of its buses. “Bus drivers are not allowed to transport personal items on buses and this is the first instance this has been reported,” she said. The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure said it was “disappointed” by the alleged actions and confirmed a driver and supervisor had been suspended. “DPTI does not condone the use of public transport buses for personal use,” a department spokeswoman said. “We are disappointed in having these images brought to our attention and have requested an immediate investigation be undertaken by Light City Buses. We have been advised that the driver and his supervisor have been stood down pending this investigation.” Moral of the story? Don’t post it on Facebook...

Monday: Alex here, doing the diary this week. It’s the infamous press day. We are in a good position production wise and don’t finish too late in the evening.
The video features Baker and the band playing in the songs namesake
Norman Baker: Transport Minister turned pop star? Transport Minister Norman Baker has released a pop single with his band The Reform Club. Baker, who fronts the band, co-wrote the song ‘Piccadilly Circus’, which is planned to feature on the band’s full-length ‘Always Tomorrow’. As popular blog railwayeye. blogspot.co.uk put it: “Good to see Norm preparing for life outside of Parliament in 2015. Eye sees a great future for Norm! Mostly at the bottom of the escalator at Piccadilly Circus station...” Miaow. Being the CBW Editorial team’s most musically-minded, Andrew shared his thoughts on the track: “The song certainly won’t win any prizes at the next BRIT Awards, but it’s a jovial tune with a catchy
melody. “Baker’s voice isn’t half bad, although he struggles a bit with the higher notes. He should certainly be commended for putting himself out there and opening himself up to criticism.” Baker commented: “Music has always been very important to me. That’s what I like to do when I go home and switch off the day job.” CBW wonders, if the band takes off, will there be time to squeeze in a tour? With all of Baker’s public appearances at bus-related events across the country, maybe a tour of depots and garages might work for the band. Watch the video at http:// youtu.be/DDd_deMoUpc
Tuesday: A typical day in the office, chasing news stories over the phone & by email. Also take the dreaded ‘PR speak’ out of a number of press releases & seek to add value by getting our own quotes. Spend time going over my extensive notes from last week’s Lucketts visit in preparation for the forthcoming super feature. I make a note to chase up a few people to clarify certain details. Wednesday: Spend a good portion of the day working on Tour News. By the evening I have an odd desire to visit the Submarine Museum in Gosport and attend an annual flower show in Harrogate… Thursday: A day out of the office to put the finishing touches on a collaborative arts project I’m working on outside of work. Spend the day running around Peterborough gathering necessary supplies and talking to those involved, ranging from musicians to actors. Here’s hoping it all goes off without a hitch on March 30 in Peterborough town square… To top off an otherwise busy day, my brother, Josh, and his better half Izzie, are back from University for Easter. As part of a time honoured family tradition there’s Chinese food and beer all round. Cheers! Friday: All hands to the pumps to ensure as many pages as possible are sent to Keith in preparation for Monday. I pitch an idea for a feature with a difference which goes down well and will hopefully be organised in the coming week. I’m looking forward to going to York on Saturday for the weekend to catch up with friends and to surprise and see off a mate of mine who is emigrating to the Netherlands with his better half. www.coachandbusweek.com

trent barton’s training team celebrate with their trophy
trent barton’s awardwinning training team trent barton has been named Nottinghamshire’s Employer of the Year by the Nottinghamshire Training Network. The operator scooped the accolade at an awards event, after impressing judges with its apprenticeship programme and commitment to the development of all employees. Danielle Thomas, one of the award judges, commented: “Employment with trent barton is about so much more than driving a bus. Many of the drivers recruited over past years have gone on to take up supervisory and
management positions.” The award was presented during a gala dinner at the East Midlands Conference Centre, which was sponsored by VWN, Futures and Central College Nottingham. Following the presentation, Guy Gibson, Head of Training at trent barton, said: “We’re delighted at this recognition of our commitment to training that’s based around putting the customer first. “So far we’ve filled around 1,000 places on our driver training programmes. We like to take on individuals who are good with people, regardless of their age or previous experience, and then teach them to drive a bus, rather than just fill vacancies with qualified drivers who don’t necessarily have the same people skills. “The same approach is true across the company and all employees have the opportunity to progress their career.”
Following the implementation of a new single UK organisational structure earlier in the year, DFDS Seaways has introduced the new structure for its UK sales team. In January, the firm announced it would bring the previous two UK organisations together to create a single organisation that was responsible for all six UK passenger ferry routes. The re-organisation was made to help strengthen visibility and make it easier for both customers and trade to book with and work with DFDS Seaways. The new sales team structure will be headed up by Andrew Crowe as Head of Sales for the UK. He will be supported by two Sales Managers – Stuart Duddy and Colin Fawcus. Stuart will be based from the Dover office and will cover sales accounts for southern England,
as well as taking responsibility nationally for Coach Business. Colin Fawcus will work from the Newcastle office, covering the north of England, Scotland and Ireland. He will also be responsible nationally for UK retail travel agency sales. Janet Donaldson, based in Newcastle, will continue to look after private group sales and will work with Stuart on Coach/Tour Operator business. The sales team will be supported by sales support, also based in the Newcastle office. Andrew Crowe, Head of UK Sales, said: “Now DFDS Seaways has one sales team in the UK it will make it much easier for trade accounts to book with us and ultimately work with us. The accounts will have just one point of contact which covers all of our six UK routes, which makes sense for all concerned.” The new single UK passenger organisation is headed by Max Foster, who has previously been heading DFDS Seaways’ joint passenger sales organisation in Germany.
