s you’ll read on p16, this issue contains a ‘Face to Face’ interview with Stagecoach East MD Andy Campbell, who I feel makes some interesting points. He’s an individual I respect – and one I’ve got on well with since I joined CBW’s full-time team. He’s always seemed the sort who’s frank – you might say he’s a stereotypical engineer and a Yorkshireman to boot. He’s also the kind of person who’s always got something interesting to say. Now, if you’re a coaching sort, please don’t glaze over – for he talks about the controversial ‘improvements’ to a stretch of Bourges Boulevard in Peterborough, which impact on visiting coaches – in addition to local bus services run by Andy’s irm. The council has made no secret that it wants to discourage through trafic from what is a key artery – preferring it to use the ‘parkway’ dualcarriageways which circle the city. Perhaps strangely, it has allowed Waitrose (a trafic generator) to open a supermarket on the old parcels depot site alongside the railway station. Alas, to further the aforementioned goal, lanes are being narrowed, trees planted in the central reservation and a set of lights installed at the exit for railway station trafic to enable it to turn right, rather than having to go round an island. While the previous arrangement wouldn’t win any design awards, it seemed to work

on the whole. The current works only affect a small stretch of road on paper – between two roundabouts at essentially either end of the bus and railway stations – but its impact has been chaotic. Indeed, for many of us locals, the city centre is no go zone during daytime hours. Colleagues who commute to the ofice by bus complain of lengthened journeys. I recently saw four citi2 buses running together. The local newspaper, which believe it or not in his day and age, does not tend to sensationalise things, has dubbed it a £4.5m ‘vanity project.’ Anyway, if as an operator or driver you ind yourself on rail replacement between 0700 and 1900hrs, be prepared to allow extra time – a lot of extra time. There have been reports of motorists waiting between 20 and 45 minutes to exit the Asda car park (located on Bourges Boulevard), which says it all. If you’re bringing groups to the city, be sure to tread carefully as I’m sure you won’t want to upset your customers. Further ahead, while the council has promised to stop the work in the run up to Christmas, we’ll have to see what the stage the project will have reached and what it means for our coaches and buses by then. I just hope the end result is worth all the grief...

NXWM fined over death of employee Operator is made to pay £150,000 fine and costs of £35,119 National Express West Midlands (NXWM) has been fined £150,000 after an employee died when he was crushed between two buses. Lee Baker, a 24-year-old assistant mechanic who had served with the company since 2006, was working a night shift at the company’s Walsall garage, when the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday, October 22, 2011. Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that he was attempting to move a double-decker bus to get access to a pit, but the reverse gear wouldn’t work. He and a colleague attempted to push it backwards to get it past a single-decker parked 10 feet away and sideways on to the double-decker. Lee went into the cab of the bus, which has an automatic safety device engaging the parking brake when the doors are open. He intended to select neutral but inadvertently left it in drive. As a result, when he got off and closed the doors, the parking brake automatically disengaged after three seconds and the bus moved towards the two men who were then in front of the bus ready to push. Although his colleague managed to jump out of the way, Lee didn’t and was crushed between the two vehicles. Lee died in hospital three-and-a-half months later on February 12, having never regained consciousness. A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that no supervisor was on duty at the time of the incident and that NXWM

The judge acknowledged that NXWM has an excellent safety record overall had failed to perform a suitable assessment of the risks inherent in moving buses manually. HSE also found that employees had not been trained in a safe system of work for moving buses not under their own power and had allowed the practice of workers pushing them during the night shifts. The company had a recovery agency to tow broken down vehicles both to the depot and within it, but prior to the incident only supervisors had been briefed in relation to calling them out. The lack of both a clear, safe system of work and a supervisor had led to Lee attempting to devise
his own way of dealing with a problem that was preventing him from getting on with his work NXWM had earlier pleaded guilty to one breach of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and a separate offence under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The company was fined a total of £150,000 and ordered to pay costs of £35,119. Speaking after the hearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court, HSE inspector Eve-Marie Edwards said: “This was a dreadful tragedy and was devastating to Lee Baker’s family. It is clear that the failings of West Midlands Travel contributed
significantly to this young man’s death. “The company has since introduced a number of safety measures to prevent a recurrence. It is a pity a young man, who should have had his whole life ahead of him, had to die in what was an avoidable incident for that to happen.” A spokesman from NXWM told CBW: “Our thoughts are with Lee Baker’s family on what has been another difficult day for them. “We respect the judgement and fine awarded in this case. We also welcome the judge’s comments regarding our overall excellent safety record.”

Stagecoach Group passes £200m operating profit Stagecoach has released its preliminary results for the year ended April 30, 2014. Group revenue increased to £2,930m (2013 £2,804.8m), total operating profit rose to £200.9m (2013 £199.8m) and profit before taxation improved by £3.7m to £158m. Adjusted earnings per share were up 5.7% to 26.0 pence (2013 24.6 pence), full year dividend per share increased by 10.5% to 9.5 pence (2013: 8.6 pence) and net debt was down £76.4m to £461.6m (2013: £538.0m) In the UK Bus division, Stagecoach has made orders for over £110m of new buses for 2014/15, as previously reported in March. The company also

highlighted new contract wins in London. In North America, the group saw an increase of over 80% in operating profit, driven by Megabus inter-city services. Looking ahead, the company said it would focus on customer service improvements to support modal shift, development of the Megabus product and footprint and planned extensions or direct awards of South West and East Midlands rail franchises. The group has also been shortlisted for the InterCity East Coast rail franchise in partnership with Virgin, with a pipeline of other new rail opportunities in UK Commenting on the results, Chief Executive, Martin Griffiths, said: “We have met our expectations for the year. Across the group, we have a strong set of locally-managed businesses which are improving services for

our customers, supporting the economy and communities, and adding value for our investors. “For many years, we have built a sustainable business and attracted more people to greener public transport through a successful combination of low fares, continued investment, innovation, financial discipline and high customer satisfaction. By working together, we believe the public and private sector can best provide high quality bus and rail travel. “In the UK, we have placed record orders for new vehicles at our regional bus networks in 2014/15, which is a sign of our confidence in continuing to get people out of their cars and back on board the bus. We also have the lowest fares of any national bus operator and the highest customer satisfaction. In London, we are winning and retaining

contracts on the right terms and our customers are benefitting from improved operational performance. “Our growing megabus.com business is continuing to expand and is leading a resurgence in good value, high quality inter-city travel options for people in the UK, mainland Europe and North America. In North America, in particular, we have significantly extended our footprint with new hubs, including in Florida. “The fantastic response of our professional and committed people to the prolonged extreme winter weather in parts of the UK and North America illustrates how central they are to our success. The Group itself has a strong financial foundation. I am confident we have new ideas and new opportunities ahead to deliver further sustainable growth in our business.”
Optare CEO positive about order growth despite continued losses Optare has revealed preliminary unaudited results for the year ended March 31, 2014. Revenue for the period was £56.9m, a reduction of 25% over prior year. Optare said this was due to reduced kit revenues. Operating profit was £6.1m (representing 10.7% of turnover) over the 12 month period (2013: £5.2m, representing 6.9% of turnover). Administration expenses for the period fell to £8.0m (2013: £8.8m (preexceptional items). Total registrations in Optare’s core UK bus market totalled 2,494 units in 2013/14, showing a contraction of 347 units against the previous year, but representing

an increase in market share from 11.5% to 14.1%. Optare continues to be strong in the less than 12 ton market (Solo), where it achieved 100% share of the UK market, and saw growth in the 12-16 ton market (Versa). The company said there were no exceptional costs in this year’s accounts, as the site closure and restructuring phase of Optare has now been completed. These costs amounted to £1.8m in 2013. However, the company remains loss-making, with a £4,061m loss on ordinary activities before taxation. This is an improvement on the previous financial year, where the loss stood at £5.539m. EBITDA losses were reduced to
£1.9m (2013: £3.6m) and loss per share reduced from 0.3p per share to 0.2p per share. The company highlighted the launch of its new Euro 6 vehicle range, the development of the new Euro 6 integral MetroDecker, the appointment of a new export distributor in Australia and the winning of the Excellence in Technology award at the 2013 National Transport Awards for its fast charging electric Versa. Enrico Vassallo, CEO, commented: “Despite challenging market conditions over the last twelve months, I am pleased to report that we are now seeing the positive signs of increased sales activities in our key market of the
UK. This has resulted in a 30% growth in orders in 2013-14. “We believe that the launch of the new Metro range of vehicles will serve to strengthen our market position. We have made considerable progress in supply chain cost reduction, implementing manufacturing efficiencies and further improving the quality of our products, and we continue to focus on our processes to drive continuous improvement. “With the business breakeven point lowered we are confident that we have built solid foundations for the group to grow the top line and return to profitability.”

NEWS B R I E F LY l TWINNED TOWNS Reading and Dusseldorf are continuing to strengthen their relationship. Once again this summer Reading Buses has had a work placement student from Lore Lorentz Schule, Dusseldorf. Robin Hoehn spent three weeks with the firm where he gained experience in different departments. Reading Buses CEO James Freeman said: “Robin’s goal was to better his English, though I must say it was already good. He also wanted to learn as much as possible about Reading Buses and the work we do. It was all very new to him – another country, culture and language – but he took all in his stride.” Robin arrived in the UK with seven work placements and managed to visit London, Oxford and Windsor during his weekends, as well as exploring Reading. l GROUP TRAVEL SHOW Excursions is to open for longer in 2015. Following the exhibition’s move into the Great Hall at Alexandra Palace in its 10th anniversary year, the 2015 show, which will take place on Saturday, January 24, will now open at 1000 instead of 1030hrs. Closing time will remain at 1600hrs. l WRIGHTS GROUP has launched its new website at www.wrightsgroup.com It includes dedicated pages for each division of the group including Wrightbus, Customcare and Wrightbus International, and there are also video pages. Wrights Group Managing Director Mark Nodder said: “We’re very pleased with our new updated website which completely replaces the old version. We believe it has a fresh look and is easier to navigate and will provide an extremely useful and informative resource for our customers. With topics such as fuel efficiency, level of service and quality at the top of so many customers’ agendas these days, it features important and easy to use information on our innovative Euro 6 vehicles and Customcare, plus much more about the Wrights Group and our different divisions.”

TfL to change cyclist warning stickers New stickers are due to be issued by the end of the summer Transport for London (TfL) has agreed to change the wording on its ‘Cyclists Stay Back’ stickers, following a meeting with cycling organisations on June 25. The stickers were intended for vehicles with blind spots, in particular lorries weighing 3.5t, but they have appeared on vehicles which the Cyclist’s Touring Club (CTC) claims do not have such significant blind spots, like taxis, vans and buses. The CTC expressed concern that the sticker’s design and its presence on vehicles without significant blind spots is having an adverse impact on driver behaviour. It was argued that the wording
on the stickers implied the responsibility was with the cyclist to stay behind vehicles at all times, which led drivers to accuse cyclists of ‘behaving contrary to the rules of the road.’ The CTC argued overtaking on the left side is perfectly lawful where traffic is slow-moving or stopped. At the meeting on June 25, the CTC said it was ‘pleasantly surprised’ at TfL’s willingness to cooperate. TfL officials acknowledged that something should be done about the many vehicles displaying the stickers unnecessarily, but said it does not have the power to order operators not party to the TfL-led Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) to remove them. TfL has, however, already sent instructions to all FORS
Many cycling groups argued the stickers were passing the responsibility of safely driving a large vehicle onto cyclists members on the correct usage of the stickers and agreed to make the instructions available on the TfL website. TfL also agreed to redesign the stickers following consultation with cycling organisations. The stickers will be re-issued to operators by the end of the summer, along with
Optare’s popular John Horn retires Sir Brian Souter
quiets speculation
John Horn (Left) hands over to Tim Matthews after 45 years in the industry John Horn has retired as UK Sales Director at Optare after 45 years in the industry. Recently appointed UK Retail Sales Manager Tim Matthews takes over as Head of Sales for UK and Ireland. John joined the industry straight from school as an apprentice coach builder in Portsmouth. That’s where he met his now wife of over 40 years, Sheila. He joined East Lancashire Coach Builders in 1996, which later became Optare. John said: “I am looking forward to spending more time with my family in Portsmouth and watching the mid-week games at Pompey. I wish Tim every success
in his new role.” Enrico Vassallo, CEO of Optare, said: “Everyone at Optare wishes John well for the future. John is well known by everyone at Optare and we thank him for his contribution to the company over the last 18 years he has worked for the firm.” Sales, Marketing and Service Director David Siviero added: “John is well respected at Optare and has been a pleasure to work with and I wish him all the very best. I look forward to working with Tim to support the company in achieving growth in the UK and Ireland.”
Sir Brian Souter has said Scottish independence would be good for business, following media speculation that Stagecoach was concerned about the impact it could have on the company. Sir Brian, who is well known as a backer and donor for the Scottish National Party (SNP) issued a personal statement following interpretations of a risk management warning issued by Stagecoach Group, for which he is the Chairman, on the independence referendum. Stagecoach advised investors that changes to the regulatory environment or the availability of public funding as a result of the referendum, or from the subsequent UK General Election, ‘could affect the group’s prospects’ in its preliminary results. Following this, the Better Together campaign claimed that Stagecoach had “driven a coach and horses through the nationalists’ case for separation.” Sir Brian said it was an advisory of the potential for political change to impact the business, both from the referendum and the 2015 General Election. He added: “I personally hold the view independence will create a positive outcome for all companies in Scotland.” www.coachandbusweek.com

New on-street ticket machines Nottingham Nottingham City Council is set to transform the way passengers buy public transport ‘smart’ tickets. The irst phase of a £1.5m retail network will begin this week which includes ticket machines, Payzone outlets and an online portal, to make it faster, easier and more cost effective to buy, collect and top up tickets for journeys in and around the city. Currently customers can only buy transport tickets at a limited number of locations in the city centre. The Citycard Retail Network will see the introduction of over 250 new and convenient locations where customers can buy tickets. In addition to over 80 on street ticket machines being installed, over 180 Payzone locations and a new online ticket buying facility will be added to the network by the end of 2014.

The new ticket machines will allow customers to top up their Citycard with Kangaroo day or season tickets using a debit or credit card. Customers can also buy a Citycard pre-loaded with 10 days of travel. To begin with, customers will only be able to buy Kangaroo travel using the on street ticket machines however the range of tickets that can be bought from the ticket machines will be extended over time. Initially, ticket machines will be installed in three locations - Derby Road QMC, Bulwell Bus Station and near Nottingham Station – to allow for a inal phase of live testing before the full roll-out is complete. It is expected this inal phase of testing will take around 10 days. Once testing is complete the remaining ticket machines will be installed throughout the city centre in July and August and at district centres and other key locations by the end of 2014. The ticket machines are being supplied by Cammax.
Poole and Bournemouth upgrade RTI systems The Borough of Poole and Bournemouth Borough Council are investing in an upgrade to the existing Real Time Information (RTI) system following the funding from the Department for Transport’s Better Bus Area Funds. The system is expected to deliver up to the minute information to passengers through a state of the art webbased communications system. The current RTPI scheme was delivered in 2002 in Poole, and its successes include being the irst in the region to launch real-time bus information to mobile phones in 2007, and in 2011 the introduction of bus stops equipped with NFC tags to interact with the latest smartphones, both allowing
customers to check information wherever they were. The new system will use the latest web-based technology, allowing communications with the bus themselves to switch from the current mobile radio system to a GPRS solution. Following recent upgrades to number of key junctions, bus priority at trafic signals can also be delivered across the main Poole – Bournemouth – Christchurch ‘Three Towns Travel’ corridor using Local Sustainable Transport Funding. “By working in partnership with the local Bus Operators we have seen a dramatic increase in ridership in Poole – passengers have almost doubled in the last 10 years,” says Nick Phillips, Accessibility Team Leader for
Borough of Poole Transportation Services. “The upgrade of the popular Real-Time Information system can continue to make buses more attractive and easier to use – which is great news for both the environment and road congestion.” The new system is to be delivered by Trapeze Group, whose UK Managing Director, Peter Bell, commented: “We are delighted to be able to continue our relationship with Borough of Poole and Bournemouth Borough Council. “We irmly believe in the importance of improved passenger information to promote public transport usage and are proud to have been chosen to support such forwardthinking organisations.”

NEWS RO A D WATC H ■ A NEW PHASE of work to convert the latest section of the M1 in West Yorkshire to a smart motorway got underway on Monday (June 30). Contractors will be cutting across both the north and southbound carriageways over a series of nights between J40 and 42 near Wakefield to install cable ducting. A series of 23 overnight closures are required to either the north or southbound carriageway. All closures will take place between 2000 0600hrs. Confirmed blockades so far include: July 8-11 southbound (four nights); July 12-13 northbound (two nights); July 14-15 southbound (two nights); July 16-17 northbound (two nights); and July 19-20 southbound (two nights). The final closure will be on August 10. ■ A £4M PROJECT to improve the capacity of the A5 Mile End roundabout at its junction with the A483 at Oswestry in Shropshire gets underway this week. The work will involve realigning the junction to improve traffic flow and adding an extra arm north-west of the roundabout to enable access to a proposed development site. The scheme also includes new footways and pedestrian crossings, upgraded traffic lights, road markings, and LED street lights. A temporary 50mph speed limit will be in force 24 hours a day from next Tuesday (July 8). The majority of the work will take place overnight between 1830 and 0700hrs. During the course of the work there will be phased overnight lane closures as well as occasional full closures. ■ ANOTHER £6M is to be invested on the A83 in Argyll and Bute to mitigate the effects of landslides and improve the performance of the route. That the extra funding will allow further landslide mitigation measures to be put in place now that the work at the Rest and Be Thankful is nearing completion. Transport Scotland said the fencing has performed well so far, stopping landslip material from reaching the road on at least two occasions.

Changes to Stagecoach UK coach management structure Edward Hogson takes over Scottish CItylink, while Elizabeth Esnouf is to focus on Megabus Stagecoach has announced changes to the management structure of its UK Coach division in order to deliver further expansion of its coach operations in the UK and Europe. From July 1, current Managing Director of Coaches and Special Activities Elizabeth Esnouf will focus on managing Stagecoach’s Megabus network in the UK and Europe, whilst Scottish Citylink will be the responsibility of Managing Director of West Scotland, Edward Hodgson. “This is an exciting time for our coach networks across the UK and in Europe,” said Stagecoach UK Bus Managing Director Robert Montgomery. “It’s important that we have the correct management structure in place to help develop both our Scottish Citylink and Megabus operations in the future.” Elizabeth Esnouf was appointed Olympic Project Director in 2011 and played a key role in

in the Midlands, England, she was appointed Managing Director of Coaches and Special Activities in December 2012. Elizabeth said: “Our recent Megabus expansion into southwest France and Spain is great news for passengers looking for a low-cost journey to Europe.” Edward Hodgson was previously Commercial Director at Stagecoach South before spending three years in the US in the role of Director of Megabus, where he developed the expansion of the inter-city and inter-state Megabus network in North America. He was appointed Managing Director of Stagecoach West Scotland in December 2011. “The Scottish Citylink coach network is one of the most important transport operations in Scotland and our services are relied upon by thousands of people every day,” said Edward. “Our routes already cover the majority of Scotland but we know we can continue to improve and expand what we offer to our customers and I look forward to being part of that going forward.”
New sightseeing tours and attraction ticket website goes live Ensignbus has launched CityXplora on the internet travel and tourism scene. The brand new website, which is built from the ground up, features sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus tours, day tours and popular attraction tickets, along with combination tickets and theatre tickets from several key worldwide destinations including New York, London, Paris, Madrid and Dublin. Ensignbus said it has long recognised open top, hop-on hopoff sightseeing bus tours are the tourist’s choice and considered by many as the best way to get around their vacation destination quickly and easily. They create an important link between the location’s tourist attractions, hotels, railway stations, cruise terminals and even shopping districts. Peter Newman, Chairman of Ensignbus said: “Over the past few years, since selling City Sightseeing, we have recognised a gap in the market to bring together all the open top hop-on hop-off bus operations around the world plus
The website covers worldwide destinations popular tourist attractions and day tours into just one website.” Ensignbus has drafted in Iain Coupar, the former Lothian Buses Marketing Director and until recently the head of franchise at City Sightseeing Worldwide. Peter Newman added: “Having Iain heading up the project has allowed us to develop something more technologically advanced whilst understanding the operations and worldwide
tourism business. What many of the tour and attraction operators want is a closer relationship between their selling agents to allow them to grow – unfortunately we ind that commonly overlooked, but hopefully through their involvement with CityXplora we can bring some of that back.” The website can be found at www.cityxplora.com

John Barry, TfL’s Head of Network Development for buses. “The changes to the N205 are part of a series of improvements we are making to bus services and follows improvements introduced to the N26 last weekend.” The change is part of TfL’s management and development of a 700-route network across Greater London, operated by 7,600 buses carrying more than 2.4m passengers every year. The network is kept under regular review by TfL, working with London boroughs and other partners to ensure services are in tune with London’s changing travel needs.
DEFIBRILLATORS are to be introduced at every staffed bus station across Greater Manchester. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), in partnership with North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, will install Automated External Defibrillators (AED) at 16 bus stations across the county. They have been installed at Altrincham, Ashton, Bury and Rochdale and Shudehill Interchanges, Bolton, Hyde, Leigh, Manchester Airport Middleton, Oldham, Stockport, Wigan and Wythenshawe Bus Stations, Travelshops at Eccles and Piccadilly Gardens. The defibrillators can be used with very little assistance and 999 emergency operators have the location of all the devices, meaning any nearby emergency callers will be directed to a bus station where a defibrillator is. Dr Jon Lamonte, Chief Executive of TfGM, said: “Safety is always at the top of the agenda for our bus stations and defibrillators really can make the difference between life and death for someone whose heart has failed. “Fortunately, it’s relatively rare for someone to have an accident or fall ill while travelling, but there are times when our staff are called upon to give first aid and they take this duty very seriously.” “For every minute a person in cardiac arrest doesn’t have a defibrillator attached to their chest, their chance of survival reduces by 14%,” said David McNally, Community Resuscitation

We’re currently putting in place our final plans and will post up to date details and timings on our website well in advance of the Scottish Open.”

THE CASTLEWAYS COACHES-RUN bus route linking Winchcombe to Cheltenham will be taken over by Cheltenham-based Marchants Coaches in August, the Gloucester Echo reported. The new operator will be responsible for the 606 service which runs between Royal Well in Cheltenham and Willersey near Broadway, according to a notice posted by the Office of the Traffic Commissioner. “It is a very important service for the people of Winchcombe,” said County Councillor for Winchcombe and Woodmancote Roger Wilson. “There is, I believe, a contract with the County Council for Marchants to take over the service from Castleways, over time of course it is very much to be hoped that the service and frequency isn’t diminished and that it improves.” As reported in CBW last week, planning application has been lodged with Tewkesbury Borough Council to build a Budgens convenience supermarket on the site of the Castleways depot in Winchcombe. Although unconfirmed by either company, Roger Wilson told the Gloucester Echo he believed both the bus route and private hire business of Castleways has been taken over by Marchants.

Member for Regeneration, said: “This is an extremely exciting plan for the town and would be a massive step forward for Kings Lynn. “The changes would bring fresher, better looking facilities, provide better access for buses, taxis and pedestrians and improve pedestrian access to the railway station. “We launched a survey in December to get a feeling of what the people of Kings Lynn wanted and we came up with these proposals. “Hopefully our vision matches those of the people of Kings Lynn.” Further consultations will take place until July 20, with the hope of submitting a planning application by August. The improvements proposed in the plan include a new feature canopy to provide better shelter for people waiting at departure bays, improvements to pedestrian links between the bus and railway station, changes to location of departure bays and an increase in arrival bays, refurbishment of public toilets and information office, widened bus laybys and pedestrian crossing at railway stations and real-time information signs. Should the plan be given the go ahead, the council aims to complete the station for May 2015. NORFOLK GREEN has announced that some of its fares will be rising by an average of 3.5%. The Stagecoach-owned operator highlighted that its prices have not increased in over a year and some fares on Coasthopper service will in fact be reducing. The changes were due to take effect on July 2. Managing Director Andrew Dyer said: “Prices have been at current levels for over 15 months since the previous fare revision in March 2013. This period has seen the cost of operating bus services increase and this has meant that it is necessary to make a small increase to most fares which will average around 3.5%. “The good news is that single fares within Lynn remain frozen at their current prices and return fares in the town are being increased by just 10p. This keeps fares in Lynn amongst the cheapest nationwide. “On our Coasthopper service we are looking to encourage families to ditch the car and use the bus whilst on their holidays along the Norfolk Coast, by reducing the prices of our family and seven day tickets.”

ndy Campbell has headed up Stagecoach’s Cambridgeshire operations for the last 10 years. In that time he has seen his empire expand with the acquisition of Fenland independent Cavalier, which operated across both Fenland and Huntingdonshire. An internal change within Stagecoach also saw the former Bedford-based operations of United Counties transferred into his stewardship. The Stagecoach East business now operates 364 vehicles from four depots, of which 322 are required at peak times, and employs 989 staff, 761 of which are drivers. My plan was to travel to Cambridge and meet Andy in his office which is co-located within the Stagecoach depot in the city. However, those plans were thwarted when Andy suggested we meet in CBW’s home city of Peterborough. Before meeting Andy, I took a few trips on his local services hoping that it would give me further intelligence for the interview. However, other than some late running and ‘bunching’ of buses on the Citi 1 route, which also took me from the city centre to outside Stagecoach’s Peterborough depot, there was little evidence of problems. Peterborough depot has a modern facade www.coachandbusweek.com

Cambridge Park & Ride operation could be undermined as a result plans to introduce parking charges
with a reception and travel shop but around the rear is a cramped, poorly laid out depot and engineering facilities. The site is located within a mainly residential area. I arrive around 10 minutes before Andy and wait in reception on a chair which has, in the very distant past, been covered in the older striped pre-2000 version of the Stagecoach moquette. While I wait, I discuss the weekend’s events with a couple of the controllers – I went with the open top Bristol FLF, part of the Stagecoach heritage fleet, to Cheltenham where it (and I as a conductor) was used at the Running Day event to mark the retirement of Stagecoach West MD Ian Manning. Andy arrives and I am escorted through the control and detail office and up the stairs to the main Peterborough offices. Almost before I sit down, Peterborough’s Assistant Operations Manager Chris Harbour takes orders for hot drinks. It’s a coffee (white, one sugar for me).
Career
I start by asking Andy what his first job was and what attracted him to the bus industry. The answer to the latter part of the question was £2.50 a week. “Upon leaving school in 1969 I got a job as an apprentice mechanic with a company called www.coachandbusweek.com
018_023_CBW1144_Andy Campbell.indd 17
Moortown Motors which paid £5 a week. Before I started I saw an advert for a similar position with Leeds City Transport (which became part of the West Yorkshire PTE) paying £7.50 week – I got the job and finished my apprenticeship.” Andy says his original ambition was to be a supervisor and do night school training. However, having been promoted to foreman in his early 20s he realised he could do more and set his sights on further promotion but says: “It was difficult in the PTE environs where Directors and senior staff tended to remain in post until they retired, which severely limited promotion prospects. “That said, having become a qualified engineer I rose through the ranks to Fleet Engineer and then Engineering Director. My break into operations came following the departure of the Operations Director. I was asked if I would take on the additional role, which I agreed to do for six months.” With deregulation of the industry in 1986, Andy took on the role of Engineering Director at Leeds in 1995. “As an engineer, one of the hardest jobs I had to do was close down the company’s central works operation,” he says. This was followed in 1998 by a move to First
Mainline in Sheffield. After a spell as Managing Director at First’s Bradford operation he was promoted to Regional Director North West with First. However, it is quite clear the latter role had significant difficulties and challenges and is one he would like to forget. He joined Stagecoach at the start of 2004. He says: “My experience in Bradford, where I launched the first commercial smartcard and also introduced the Bradford guideway operation, was certainly top of my CV.” Andy says he likes to manage, rather than be managed. I ask if that meant he found it difficult working for former Stagecoach UK Bus Director Les Warneford. Andy pauses and says: “Les had a way of managing people without them realising they were being managed.”
Balancing act
When he arrived in Cambridge in 2004 the local authority was ‘switched on’ to partnership working. Andy praised the co-operation of Brian Smith at Cambridgeshire County Council: “Brian shared the vision on controlling congestion and increasing passenger numbers that we have at Stagecoach. “Things changed when Brian left.”
July 2, 2014 | COACH & BUS WEEK | 17 30/06/2014 19:39
FACE TO FACE › ANDY CAMPBELL Andy irmly believes that there is a view held by some people at local authority level that “Stagecoach is a commercial operation, so it shouldn’t be subsidised. Although they miss the point that the more services we can operate commercially, then less money is required from the public purse. This approach immediately puts Stagecoach on the ‘back foot’ and makes relationships much more dificult to manage.” Rather than just walking away when funding has come to an end or been cut, Andy says: “The Stagecoach approach throughout Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire has been to carry out a thorough review (where funding has been terminated) and identify if there are commercial opportunities to continue to provide albeit a limited service. “We have been successful in adapting some routes to maintain a service. Some of these routes are really marginal, but it’s important as a public service business to provide the best level of service that we can do commercially. This does mean there has to be a balance to be achieved between direct or ‘round the houses’ services.” Everything Andy does has a robust business case and delivers the return expected by the Stagecoach Board. The inancial return has become more demanding as a result of the cuts in concessionary travel reimbursement,
Busway
Andy Campbell’s controversial Busway branding which upset councillors reductions in Bus Service Operators Grant and increases in wages and fuel costs. The last two years have seen what was formerly known as fuel duty rebate reduced by 20%, whilst fuel tax has risen by almost three quarters. Given those increases, Andy has been forced to make harsh decisions. Reduce costs, increase fares or grow the business further. There is no doubt he is winning the latter, but earlier this year had to increase fares – although the increase was kept low for non-paper tickets to encourage further use of smartcards.
I now turn to the Cambridge Busway, which is seen as a ‘jewel’ in Stagecoach’s operation. Previously it had been described as a ‘white elephant’ due to delays in its opening, although Andy says never by him. “I always believed the Northern section of the Busway would be successful as it provides a real alternative to the congested A14 road and I could never understand why that section of the Busway could not have been opened when it was completed, rather than waiting for the Southern section to be inished.” Stagecoach invested many millions of pounds in new vehicles for the Busway, but was forced to put them into service on the ‘classic’ preBusway routes between Huntingdon-St Ives and Cambridge initially. When delivered the buses carried the message ‘I’ll be on the Busway Soon, Will You?’ which had been devised by Commercial Director Philip Norwell. The delays did, however, frustrate Andy, and some 18 months after the new buses had been delivered and were still not on the Busway he was concerned about whether the Board would lose patience with the project, moving the vehicles to another part of the Stagecoach business where they could achieve the required return on investment. Rather than be vociferous in the public arena,
Plans by Cambridgeshire to charge for car parking at Park & Ride sites could make travelling on the Busway one of the most expensive bus journeys in the country

Andy came up with some alternative branding for the buses, which he took to a council meeting. There were no adverse comments at that meeting so the wording on the buses was changed to ‘Will I be on the Busway Soon?’ As soon as they appeared in service with their new message Andy says his phone was ‘ringing off the hook.’ “Some Councillors were furious with what I had done and said they thought I was only joking at the Council meeting.” However, most of the retailers in the city and the general public saw the funny side of it. The late opening of the Busway was not the only blight affecting the business case and the anticipated growth. The planned building of 10,000 new homes at Northstowe, which should by now have been in an advanced stage with properties inhabited, has still to start. So does Andy consider the Busway wait worthwhile? A guarded “yes” is the response. “Having expected a slow build up, additional vehicles have had to be bought to allow frequency increases and I am looking for another six new buses this year, but operation on the Busway is expensive with high access charges. “We would normally work on a ive-year life cycle for the buses and then cascade them to other routes. The delays in opening and the high access costs mean we will have to work to a longer vehicle life cycle for Busway vehicles,

maybe seven years.” What has been the level of passenger growth? “It’s up by 30% pre-Busway opening and a further 100% growth after opening, and still rising. We now carry three million customers a year.”
Local authorities
The downside of the Busway operation is that both Stagecoach routes run over the Busway and normal roads which makes them susceptible to picking up delays and results in ‘bunching’ along the Busway. Unless improvements are made, this will only get worse if Busway frequencies are further increased. The problem, says Andy, is “the lack of a co-ordinated trafic management system by the council. Road schemes tend to be managed in isolation rather than looking at the big effect they will have across the region.” He also cites St Ives as a particular problem with narrow roads which were never designed for high-frequency bus services. “There is a solution,” says Andy, “which would see buses use more suitable roads and they could access the Busway via a Bus Gate. I have had several meetings with the Town Council but they absolutely refuse to allow us to use the Bus Gate.” I sense some real frustrations in Andy’s response but also a determination to get a resolution through normal channels. “I don’t want to go legal,” he says.

months on and Andy says: “Punctuality has dropped further to 90% and in the coming 12 months it could drop even more. The local authorities have a part to play in helping me provide a punctual bus service, but one of their schemes could make things worse.” Andy is talking about changes to the Cambridgeshire Park & Ride operation which he says “will see more congestion on the city’s roads and at the same time result in a reduction in on-bus revenues.”
Cambridge Park & Ride
Parking at the city’s Park & Ride sites is currently free, with a fare paid on the bus. The council intends to charge for parking and is also considering gaining exemption from accepting concessionary travel passes on the dedicated Park & Ride services. So strongly are his feelings that the council is taking the wrong decision, Andy even suggested that Stagecoach could take over management of the Park & Ride sites and retain free parking - an offer which the council has totally rejected. Andy also expects that when the charges come in there will probably be a legal challenge on the withdrawal of concessionary travel on the Park & Ride routes. Similar charging is also planned for the Park & Ride sites on the Busway. “Charging for parking on the Busway – where normal fares are payable – will mean that the Busway will become one of the most expensive bus routes in the country. This move could

While on the subject of local authorities, Andy says: “Poor road planning and the everincreasing number of road works is affecting performance.” He cites work that was just starting in Peterborough on Bourges Boulevard, a major route through the city centre. The project here will create better access between bus and rail stations but will be on-going for 12 months. “On the irst day we lost signiicant mileage with buses taking up to 50 minutes for what should be a 10-minute journey. I met with the transport planners the following day but they have not been able to offer me any reassurance that my buses will not suffer more delays on this scale. “We will need to monitor the effect of these works over a few weeks and if we are picking up big delays and losing mileage then I only have one option which is to reduce the frequency of services in Peterborough. “I can’t do nothing. I have told the planners that the risk for my business is a ine from the Trafic Commissioner for non-compliance on punctuality or even a reduction on the number of vehicles I am authorised to operate.” Congestion is a real concern. In 2012/13 just 91.4% were compliant on punctuality. 12
reverse the growth we have seen, increase congestion and reduce our revenues.” It has been suggested that Busway patronage could decrease by 5% as a result of the charging, but Andy says: “I believe a 5% reduction is on the low side. It doesn’t seem to be joined-up thinking, because the Busway was introduced to reduce congestion on the A14 and to give people a guaranteed journey time.”
Network management
The Busway is a high proile operation for Stagecoach East, but what of the remainder of the network? “The high-frequency Citi-branded network was irst introduced in Cambridge in 2001. When I joined Stagecoach in 2004, some changes were needed to address poor levels of performance. Over the last 10 years, the Cambridge network has been ‘tweaked’ and higher capacity buses introduced on many routes. “Such was the success of the Cambridge Citi network, plans were advanced when I took over in early 2004 to give the Peterborough network a similar makeover. My then Commercial Director Philip Norwell had a wealth of knowledge of the local area and had devised

FACE TO FACE › ANDY CAMPBELL a robust and workable service network and timetables. I travelled around the area, attended local authority meetings and was convinced it would work. We are now carrying 8.2 million passengers a year on the Peterborough network having increased ridership by almost 50% in the last 10 years. “Both Cambridge and Peterborough networks are now fairly stable but there are opportunities to ‘build on’ these. Maybe we can benefit from some of the City Deal funding. There is up to £500m available over three tranches in the coming years which if successful, would allow us to develop the network further.” In Peterborough the Citi network was launched with 20 new TransBus Darts. Now 10 years old, they will be replaced with 20 new ADL Enviro 200s later this year. The original Darts will be cascaded through the Stagecoach business with some possibly heading to King’s Lynn for the recently acquired Norfolk Green business. I met Andy just three days after he had relaunched services on the Cambridge-Haverhill corridor with 11 ‘Gold’ specification Enviro 400-bodied Scanias. I ask what the expectation is from this investment. “We are looking at increased patronage year-on-year, but it’s hard to put a specific number on that. The preBusway ridership on the Huntington-Cambridge corridor was up 30%. I’d be delighted if Haverhill achieves that but would realistically expect at least a 5% increase.” So is the move to ‘Gold’ services a natural way to take services to the next level? “The ‘Gold’ product works best on interurban corridors where there are large towns with a natural travel migration to a central point. Maybe Ely and Newmarket into Cambridge or Whittlesey and Spalding into Peterborough have the potential.” Could these routes generate a robust business case for new vehicle investment? “More likely we could look at a case for cascading the existing Busway vehicles when they are replaced.” He would, however, have to bid – along with other Stagecoach subsidiaries – to keep any displaced Busway vehicles in the fleet.
X5 coaches
A busy corridor which Andy says, by his own admission, is causing him “headaches” is the X5 express service linking the university centres of Cambridge and Oxford via Bedford, Milton Keynes and Bicester. The existing fleet of 17 Plaxton Elite-bodied Volvo B9R coaches are due for replacement and increasing capacity is a core part of the business case. “The ideal would be 15-metre interdeck coaches, but there are some route issues and we would not be able to keep the operation at Bedford depot due to access issues at the garage. We could go for 12-metre vehicles, but would need to increase the frequency to every 20 minutes with operating costs also increasing. The contingency for 15-metre vehicles would be to move the operation to Fenstanton depot, where we would need to increase the size of the depot but additional land is available.” A compromise would be to go for 18 14-metre Volvo B11R coaches. Whatever option is decided upon, Andy is confident he can get the new coaches into service early next year. 20 | COACH & BUS WEEK | July 2, 2014 018_023_CBW1144_Andy Campbell.indd 20
The cramped depot at Peterborough

Environmental matters
In common with all Stagecoach companies Andy is acutely aware of the ‘green’ credentials which the business must promote. The Stagecoach East fleet now operates on biofuel, although it has been an extended learning curve and buses now use B30, while those used on the Busway use B100. Most vehicles in the fleet will shut down the engine after five minutes of idling, contributing to fuel saving and all vehicles have Green Road fitted which monitors driver actions. “Green Road has encouraged steady driving which gives passengers are a more comfortable journey, but has also helped to reduce fuel consumption.” Drivers are encouraged to check their Green Road driving record online and those who maintain a ‘green’ score during each four-week period can earn a bonus. If Stagecoach East can reduce fuel consumption by just 3%, it would provide a saving in the region of £335,000 a year. Across Stagecoach East buses cover nearly 18 million miles a year and use 2.25 million gallons of fuel a year with an average fuel consumption of 7.8mpg. Over the last few years a huge amount of paper has also been saved by not issuing
Concessionary Pass holders with a ticket. This is possible as re-imbursement is at a fixed sum irrespective of the distance travelled. There has also been a move towards encouraging the use of Smartcards with 25% of all weekly tickets now issued on smartcard, and in Bedford the figure is around 35%. The aim is to increase smartcard use further during the coming year and a stored value product is due to launch later this year. This would see passengers buy five Dayrider tickets, which would be validated (and deducted) on the days the ticket is used. Trials are also taking place using mobile ticketing.
Floating stops
Towards the end of the interview Andy takes the opportunity to mention ‘floating bus stops’ which are being planned for Cambridge. The local authority has a vision of continuous cycle lanes with a raised area between the cycle lane and the road to house the bus stop. “This is a ludicrous idea. I can see passengers being injured. They will just step forward and cross the cycle lane when they see the bus without actually looking at what is coming. I will do all I can to prevent this idea from being adopted.”

Andy feels the lack of a co-ordinated traffic management system on local roads is hindering Busway operation
Wishlist
Throughout the interview Andy has come straight back with his answers, but he was stumped at this one. I asked him if he could pass legislation which would improve the bus industry what would it be? Andy needed time to respond but said: “The bus industry should be placed in a level playing field with the rail industry when it comes to fuel. “Both rail and bus operators provide a passenger transport service, so why should the rail industry benefit from being able to use Red Diesel which attracts fuel tax at a fifth of that we have to pay for using normal diesel or Biofuel? “I would also repeal the legislation which allows Quality Contracts and I would completely review the Concessionary Travel scheme to ensure that operators are paid a fair national rate for accepting passes. “The Government also has a part to play in promoting modal shift. The tax legislation should be changed to deliver a salary sacrifice scheme for bus travel to work with payments made out of pre-tax income. This would be similar to the arrangements which already exist for the cycle to work scheme.” www.coachandbusweek.com

Trade Union
As we walk out the offices towards the depot yard, to enable the obligatory photos to be taken, I ask Andy how Industrial Relations are within Stagecoach East. “Challenging,” he says. “There is a good relationship with the Trade Unions and a strong union can be a real benefit. We do have a new full-time official and negotiations this year have been more difficult, especially the annual pay round. Cambridge, Fenstanton and Peterborough are now sorted, although we did have a threat of strike action at Peterborough which has been resolved. We are still negotiating the pay deal with engineers and drivers at Bedford.”
Peterborough depot
I can’t help noticing the cramped environs of Peterborough depot and ask Andy if he would be better off with a new depot. “Peterborough depot isn’t geared to the maintenance of modern vehicles but the team here do an amazing job with the facilities that they have. We have tried to convince Peterborough City Council that there is a case for a joint depot and Park & Ride site in the city. We could use the parking area for car parking during the day and bus parking overnight. The
proposal hasn’t received any support from Peterborough Council yet so we will have to continue to operate out of Lincoln Road depot for some time to come.” To relieve space at Lincoln Road, Stagecoach does have access to an additional secure parking area in the city, but it is not close to the main depot.
Closing lines
So having got to know the work-side of Andy, how does he relax away from work? “I spend time with my family, grandchildren and enjoy my holidays. I also go to the gym each morning before work – it allows me to work off my aggression before I start the day job!” I ask if he can really relax when on holiday. The answer was a resounding “yes.” He added: “We have made extensive use of the Stagecoach Graduate programme for senior managers and I have a strong management team around me who I can trust.” I bid farewell to Andy, who was then meeting with his Operations Director and Engineering Director. Along with the local team, they were all heading down to the staff canteen in the bus station to spend time with staff, something Andy does across his company on a regular basis. n

u-Track’s new Pulse, based on an MAN TGL chassis, marks the successful collaboration between the coachbuilder and manufacturer to develop an alternative designed to plug the gap in the market since the demise of the Mercedes-Benz Vario. Ian McLean, Head of MAN Bus & Coach UK, said the project had received the full backing of MAN in Munich and the chassis, which is already Euro 6 compliant, has been fully certiied to M3 requirements with the necessary electronic braking functions and ESP – then homologated in the UK at MIRA. While Nu-Track is the prime contractor for the TGL bus and coach version of the chassis, he conirmed there was already signiicant interest throughout Europe from coachbuilders eager build bus and coach speciication bodies on a reliable and affordable chassis which could offer a high level of aftersales support with a large service dealership network, warranties and inance options. Although the TGL was speciically designed as a truck chassis, it has been somewhat revised for bus and coach applications. It comes with parabolic front and air rear suspension and an automated manual TipMatic gearbox. The TGL range also offers wheelbase options and can be supplied in 7.5t, 10t and 12t format. It has options of either four or six cylinder engines with power ratings from 150-250bhp. Customers can also take advantage of employing MAN’s fully-functional telemetry package which includes Ecostyle monitoring of driver and vehicle performance. The online portal produces detailed reports highlighting any anomalies, Track and Trace – for real-time vehicle location, utilising Google Maps and access to a suite of full online workshop documentation for service, maintenance and repairs – eliminating the need for paper records in the workshop. It also supports in-cab forward facing cameras for incident recording which can help in lowering insurance premiums. MAN also offers customers lexible repair and maintenance contracts geared around their own schedules. Engine power and torque rating options with the 4.5 litre D0834 four cylinder unit are: 150bhp/570Nm; 180bhp/700Nm; or 220bhp/850Nm. The larger 6.9 litre, six cylinder D0836 is available with one rating of 250bhp/1,000Nm.

The project to develop the TGL chassis has moved rapidly. Nu-Track and MAN entered discussions over it during June 2013 and by July had settled on the 10t chassis option which has been given a temporary N15 designation. All the chassis speciications were determined in August, and in September the body speciication was completed. MAN Truck & Bus UK ordered the prototype chassis in October which was sent to MIRA for four weeks’ homologation and type-approval certiication. November saw the placement of orders for series production chassis. In January 2014 Nu-Track took delivery of the irst chassis

Light, spacious interior with basic but functional parcel racks and completed the build process in May. Nu-Track’s Operations Director, John McLeister, former leader of the development department at Wrightbus, said Pulse was the first of four projects for 2014. He said it had come as a direct replacement option for the Vario and believed it would keep the segment alive. The Pulse body comprised fully tested, lightweight welded aluminium construction offering fully accessible service points, M3 compliance and wheelchair accessibility, it is likely the body frame will eventually employ the patented Wrightbus Aluminique system of bolted aluminium profiles which are designed to simplify repairs.
Configurations
The model at the launch ceremony was clearly developed for the schoolbus market but NuTrack was not yet able to disclose the name of the customer. However, as the Northern Ireland School Boards generally employ a central purchasing programme it would seem fairly obvious the education authorities are behind this order and Nu-Track believes there is potential for about 40-50 orders annually for replacements in Northern Ireland. Equipped with 33 seats and generous seat spacing for a school specification vehicle, Pulse is also being offered as a dual-purpose wheelchair accessible version with rear doors 24 | COACH & BUS WEEK | July 2, 2014 022_026_CBW1144_MAN Belfast.indd 24
Compact and ergonomic cab area with everything close to hand
‘The model at the launch ceremony was clearly developed for the schoolbus market but Nu-Track was not yet able to disclose the name of the customer’ and the option of an underfloor or inboard passenger lift. These versions would come with full-length floor tracking, seats mounted on NMI lockables and maximum capacity of 10 wheelchairs with no seats. Squeezing up the seat spacing in this model would allow up to a maximum of 37. The model on show had an unladen weight of 6,080kgs with an overall length of 8,620mm, width of 2,350mm and height of 3,100mm delivering a spacious interior with an ample 500mm gangway. It featured a flush-fitting powered entrance door, with three entry steps of equal height and a flat floor throughout the saloon. The cab area forward of the entrance comprised a raised platform allowing for the front mounted engine intrusion but was levelled across the whole area to the left of the driver’s seat. Above the windscreen there was an electronic display unit for route or service information containing integrated flashing lights which can be activated when
children are boarding or alighting and serve as a warning to other road users. Coach-style versions would presumably utilise this area to install a taller windscreen for improved passenger vision when touring. An Eberspacher D5 independent heater unit provides saloon heating. Air-conditioning can be installed as an option and separate driver air-conditioning in the cab area is an option on the TGL chassis. Multiple CCTV cameras had been installed and lightweight parcel racks on either side of the saloon provided some stowage space. The racks were plain but functional and firmly secured. The TGL’s wheelbase of 4,850mm is just 50mm more than the Vario and so manoeuvrability is not really compromised to any noticeable degree. John McLeister said vehicles were entering production now and orders could be taken immediately. Current levels of production are geared up to produce four per week from www.coachandbusweek.com

European interest
According to Ian McLean, the project has been widely welcomed and although he was not prepared to name customers at this stage, he confirmed an order already existed for a 12t chassis and if necessary, MAN was prepared to undergo a similar compliance exercise on the larger TGM chassis which would then create 18-24t options. He also said European bodybuilders were in favour of the move because they too were deprived of the lefthand drive Vario model and were seeking a substitute. These would not be supplied by MAN in the UK but through the regional divisions and he was not privy to specific bodybuilding customers who were also taking up the option. He said MAN’s research showed there was currently potential for around 3,000 replacements per annum in the market created by the Vario and was confident MAN could pick up a large proportion of this due to the high cost of using the Mercedes-Benz Atego model as a natural alternative. The TGL chassis are supplied with a complete cab and will remain in this form as the current size of the market does not dictate a switch in production to produce chassis cowls. It means there is an element of waste as much of the cab needs to be discarded – but for the more utility specification vehicles it means they can use a high proportion of standard components – which include the windscreen and mirrors. Although these are not the most attractive alternative, they are adequate and help reduce purchase price and lower the costs of replacements. Coachbuilders acquiring the TGL for building high specification mini/ midicoaches can take advantage of any changes or improvements the market will support.
Simple and robust switches and controls
On the road
A brief trip in the Pulse, which was equipped with the 180bhp four cylinder engine, indicated it was a little more lively than a Vario with greater acceleration. The TipMatic gearbox makes slow and very discernible changes upwards through the range – which gives it the same sort of unhurried and tractorlike charactistics of the Vario. While the engine is quite noisy it settles down at cruising speed and is much less intrusive. It is probably no noisier than earlier Varios but it seems there is scope for improvement – which will no doubt be implemented on higher specification coach-style models and such modifications will presumably work their way into the general production chain. Ride quality is generally quite good. It feels firm and soaks up normal bumps with ease –

Emergency exit is a generous size although access is partially impeded by rear seats
although traffic calming humps can give quite a shock. There is not too much transmitted road noise, which makes the saloon quite a pleasant environment. The large, bonded side windows, complete with a grey tint, provide a good view and let in plenty of light. The fixed seats, all relatively comfortable, were trimmed in moquette and had integral three-point seatbelts. Bright yellow belt webbing was used as a clear visual indication passengers are wearing them. An automatic recording asking passengers to wear belts is played just before the vehicle sets off.
At the rear of the saloon is an offside emergency exit door. It is a generous size, although access is somewhat impeded by the rear seats. With no vertical stanchions aft of the entrance area, bell pushes are installed in the ceiling. While most adults can reach them it is unlikely smaller children could – without climbing on seats.

Conclusion
Overall, the TGL-based Pulse presents a spacious and highly versatile mini/midi platform which can easily be adapted to suit a multitude of applications. The possibility of TGM alternatives for the 18-24t sector could mean there will be viable alternatives for new 12m schoolbuses or contract services on attractively priced chassis where the front engine will not be perceived as such a disadvantage. n

Arriva Yorkshire was recently awarded the kitemark status of ‘Working Towards Being Dementia Friendly’ by Wakefield Council
BEST PRACTICE › DEMENTIA AWARENESS xxxxxx
Don’t forget about
dementia C
hances are we all know a friend or relative with dementia. It’s surprisingly, and indeed, some might say, worryingly common. For some years, it seemed those with the condition were to be found not in the community, and hence on our coaches and buses, but in the care of the EMI (Elderly Mentally Ill) unit at their local nursing home. Relecting the wider changes in how we as a society look after for some of our older active persons, dementia care has become communitybased. In short, people are kept in their own homes for as long as is practicable. I irmly believe dementia awareness is the ‘next big thing’ – and it’s vital therefore that we as a public service industry, take the lead. This follows on from being made aware of the needs of wheelchair users and then the blind and partially sighted thanks to campaigns run by the likes of Guide Dogs for example. Indeed, some 10 – 15 years ago, as a bus driver with Travel West Midlands (now National Express West Midlands) I was taught how to push a wheelchair user on and off a bus and how to ensure they were securely anchored. It’s now considered to be ‘the norm’ and is incorporated into many Driver Certiicate of Professional Competence (DCPC) courses. What’s more, dementia awareness has gained high level political support – from Prime Minister David Cameron nonetheless. Being such a common condition, Mr Cameron is doubtless aware that the subject could have widespread public support. Commendably, he’s put our money where his mouth is too by increasing research funding 28 | COACH & BUS WEEK | July 2, 2014

Dementia is a serious issue – according to Gareth Evans, who talks to ive operators about their experiences to date, including training their staff to be aware of the condition and working in partnership with both the Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK He recently announced funding for dementia research is to be doubled by 2025. That came after the Prime Minister told the Global Dementia Legacy event that new action was needed to achieve last year’s G8 summit pledge of a cure or disease modifying treatment for dementia. So what of the operators who have embraced dementia awareness training? Here, ive irms across the UK share their experiences.
First UK Bus
First UK Bus has led the way when it comes to dementia awareness, being one of, if not the inaugural operator to train its staff in awareness of the condition. In recognition of this, First scooped one of the top prizes at the inaugural Dementia Friendly Awards, organised by the Alzheimer’s Society. First won the ‘Business Award’ at the central London event on May 20, thanks to the company’s development of a training module designed to raise awareness of dementia. The two and a half hour module, Introduction to Dementia for First Bus Drivers, is now part of First’s DCPC.
The irm’s enhanced training programme – developed in partnership with Alzheimer’s Society – was in response to a challenge from Prime Minister David Cameron in 2012 for public transport operators to make their services more accessible to those living with dementia. First took up the challenge through Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friendly Communities initiative. As part of the module, one of the Prime Minister’s Champions, Trevor Jarvis from Doncaster, who is also a First passenger, was ilmed explaining the needs and concerns of those living with dementia. The training is hard-hitting and begins with a simple memory test. Training Development Manager, Keith Sheard, explained that he promises the participants an easy exercise. He asks them to draw a picture of both sides of a 1p coin, with as much detail as they can remember. He jokes: “Dead easy this – our drivers handle these coins every day!” Some people fail to recall the portcullis, or ind they have written ‘one pence’ rather than ‘one penny.’ A dozen points are up for grabs – but www.coachandbusweek.com

most only manage between two and five. Keith puts the exercise into the context of dementia, telling course participants: “If you found that slightly irritating, imagine if you forgot the detail in every aspect of your life – having breakfast, getting dressed – just imagine how frustrating that would be.” Participants are asked to write down on different pieces of paper their most prized possession, the name of someone they love, a skill they are proud of and a treasured memory. Keith then comes round and takes away one bit of paper from each person. He tells them: “I was your dementia for that moment in time. Just take a moment and think about what your life would be like without what I’ve just taken from you. “And if you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it does. Because over time, I’m going to come back and take everything else from you – so you’ll be left with absolutely nothing.” Typically participants admit they find this emotional and hard to think about. Inevitably stories emerge about family experiences. The module includes details about how different forms of dementia affect the brain. This leads into a discussion about how drivers can help confused customers. There are some barriers to good communication – such as the security screen designed to protect staff from assaults. If someone has an emotional outburst on
The actor and camera crew prepare to enter an Arriva London ADL E400 a busy bus, a driver’s first instinct may be to think they have been drinking. However, they now have an extra awareness of what might be amiss, particularly if there is no smell of alcohol on the passenger’s breath. Keith explained: “You need to be aware of the difficulty of grasping day, date and time that people with dementia have. “You might be telling me that my pass is out of date or that I can’t use it until half past nine – but if time doesn’t have any real meaning to me, I don’t understand your point or why you’re

What is dementia? According to the Alzheimer’s Society, dementia is: “A set of symptoms including memory loss, mood changes and problems with communicating and reasoning.” Dementia is not part of growing old. It is caused by diseases of the brain, the most common being Alzheimer’s. Two thirds of people with dementia are women. One in three people over 65 will develop dementia. The number of people in the UK with dementia will double in the next 40 years. In 2012, there were 800,000 people with dementia – a figure which is expected to rise to 1,700,000 by 2051.
Recognising the signs and symptoms of dementia Only 43% of people with dementia receive a diagnosis – according to the Alzheimer’s Society. Dementia affects everyone in different ways, but you should seek help

from your GP if your memory is not as good as it used to be and especially if you notice the following signs and symptoms: l Struggling to remember recent events but easily recalling things from the past; l Finding it hard to follow conversations or programmes on TV; l Forgetting the names of friends or everyday objects; l Repeating yourself or losing the thread of what you are saying; l Problems with thinking and reasoning; l Feeling anxious, depressed or angry about forgetfulness; l Other people starting to comment on your forgetfulness; l Confused even when in a familiar environment; and l A decline in the ability to talk, read or write.
Top three causes of dementia
1: Alzheimer’s disease (62%). A physical disease caused
by changes in the structure of the brain and a shortage of important chemicals that help with transmission of messages. 2: Vascular dementia (17%). Caused by problems in the supply of blood to the brain, commonly cause by a stroke or a series of small strokes. 3: Mixed dementia (10%). A type of dementia where a person has a diagnosis of both Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.
Living with dementia
How well are people living with dementia? The Alzheimer’s Society says many people with dementia and their carers are still not living well with the condition, and quality of life remains extremely varied. We all have a role to play in developing dementia friendly communities. Of interest to coach and bus operators, a third of people with dementia live on their own in the community. getting so excited about it.” Drivers are given advice which includes smiling and making eye contact, letting the passenger sit down so they have extra time to compose themselves, and not pulling away quickly if they seem unsteady on their feet. Keith continued: “Drivers need to be able to help their passengers who have any health issue – and dementia especially, because it’s not always recognised or spoken about. “The bus industry has moved over a long period to improve accessibility, with innovations like low floor vehicles to help disabled people. It seems a natural progression to now look at more hidden disabilities.” Commenting on the award, Giles Fearnley, First UK Bus Managing Director, said: “We are thrilled to have won this prestigious award and delighted that the work we’ve undertaken with Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness of the condition has been recognised. “Our drivers have responded really well to the training. Indeed, many have told us about family members and friends whose lives have been affected by dementia. One driver said he had learned more about his mother’s condition in our two and a half hour session than he had throughout the years she had suffered from the condition.” He added: “As part of our commitment to improve customer service we are working with a number of disability groups to understand how the company can provide better services. We are setting new standards of customer service across our operations in the UK. By improving our customer proposition we will encourage more people to travel by bus and to travel by bus more often.” Talking about Alzheimer Society’s partnership with First, Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive of the charity, said: “We’re delighted to recognise First Bus for its leadership in transforming the transport sector to become dementia-friendly. Thanks to First Bus’ commitment to training staff to be aware and supportive of those with the condition, people with dementia up and down the country can get out and about using bus routes knowing they’ll be welcomed, respected and supported.” In addition, as part of their DCPC, First drivers are given training to give them a better understanding of the obstacles which people

Arriva London
As part of Arriva London’s ongoing commitment to working in the communities it serves, and in particular with those passengers who may find difficulty in communicating their needs, it was delighted in February to be of assistance to the Nice and Serious video production company, who in collaboration with communication agency Forster, had been commissioned by the Alzheimer’s Society to produce a short film to encourage businesses in the community to become more dementia-friendly. Verity Cowper, the Nice and Serious producer took up the story: “We decided to shoot the entire film from the point of view of someone living with dementia. We believed this would help viewers empathise with people with dementia and therefore understand how they could help. “The film is set over a day, starting as a woman with dementia wakes up in the morning and then running through a series of typical scenarios; catching a bus, visiting a bank, going to a shop. The film starts by showing scenarios where staff from the respective businesses aren’t helpful and the impact that this has on the person with dementia. Then, at the end of the film, the scenarios are reversed showing how the same scenarios could have been more dementia friendly. “For the film to be a success, we needed access to a bus and bus driver. Arriva was incredibly helpful and provided both. We were given free access to a double-decker bus and a friendly bus driver, Frank Laine. Luckily for us, he turned out to be a talented actor and embraced the role.” Frank enthused: “It was really good to be involved with this project. It gave me a much better understanding that what you see in front 30 | COACH & BUS WEEK | July 2, 2014

We get training on helping passengers with disabilities with sight and movement, but this is the first time Alzheimer’s has been brought to my attention in relation to problems with travelling. By being involved in this way I can see for myself that my company is taking this issue seriously.” Dave Jones, Commercial Projects Manager told CBW: “We hope to use the video in our own DCPC training in due course. “Our driver Frank has been in the industry for 20-odd years. He volunteered to take part straight away. He’s a highly regarded and respected member of our team. “While there is a disability awareness module in our existing DCPC training, we hope to incorporate dementia into it soon. However, DCPC courses take time to be put together and accredited – something which is currently underway.”
Dave added: “We will look at anything we can do to help raise awareness of disabilities. We find working in partnership with organisations such as the Alzheimer’s Society is the way forward as they’re the professionals who’ve got first hand experience. A prime example is the way we’ve worked with Guide Dogs, whose representatives have come into our garages. They’re great people to deal with.” The film is to be released by the Alzheimer’s Society and used across the country to encourage businesses to become more dementia friendly – although details of when and where it will be available from remained to be confirmed as this issue went to press.

It is also creating bespoke dementia training in future DCPC modules. It comes in the wake of Hull being announced as a dementia friendly city. According to the Dementia Action Alliance, EYMS is one of the first UK bus companies to take this on board as part of its training programmes. The company was recently awarded a certificate from the Hull Dementia Academy to recognise EYMS’ involvement in this initiative. EYMS Chairman, Peter Shipp, said: “I think it is very important that our drivers, and indeed our other staff, are made aware of the genuine problems for dementia sufferers, trained to recognise this and offer help accordingly.” Darren Kendrew, Training Manager for EYMS told CBW: “We are delighted to be taking www.coachandbusweek.com

these initial steps in enhancing the company’s training courses for the benefit of EYMS staff and the wider community. “While many forms of disability are very obvious to bus drivers, people suffering with dementia are often not so apparent but still have considerable difficulties when using public transport.” He added: “After the initial training for a number of training staff and other key staff, we’ve now arranged a second session for completion in August. This will give us a number of key staff who will be trained as Dementia Ambassadors.” “Our existing DCPC training has been reviewed to incorporate more specific dementia awareness. In addition, a number of our training staff will benefit from a more in-depth dementia awareness session, which has been arranged for September. With plans to
On May 22, Arriva Yorkshire was awarded the kitemark status of ‘Working Towards Being Dementia Friendly’ by Wakefield Council – the first organisation in the Wakefield District to do so. This coincided with the 110th anniversary of Wakefield bus depot, so to mark both occasions, it hosted a ‘celebrating our heritage’ event at the city’s bus station, showcasing bus memorabilia from days gone by. Mary Lowrey, General Manager of Arriva Yorkshire’s Wakefield bus station said: “One of the things which came out in a training event run by the Alzheimer’s Society was that people with dementia are helped by seeing things from the past, such as bus liveries and uniforms. As a result, some of our drivers brought along models and memorabilia, including old ticket machines, photographs, cash bags and uniforms to our ‘celebrating our heritage’ event.” She added: “Our 300 bus drivers across West Yorkshire already have sympathetic eyes and ears on the look-out for any concerns shown by our regular passengers. With the right training, they can provide an arm around vulnerable people guiding them to the safety of our trained staff at Wakefield bus station. Within the bus station itself, our tenants and security team are signing up to become Dementia Friends and joining a burgeoning group signing up to the Prime Minister’s pledge to be watchful and caring of those living with dementia.” Arriva Yorkshire has demonstrated its commitment to support and respond to the need of people living with dementia. The firm’s Dementia Alliance Action plan can be found at www.dementiaaction.org.uk/members_and_ action_plans/1794-arriva_yorkshire_limited. The operator has focused on raising awareness of dementia with its employees and is promoting positive attitudes and dispelling myths – as well as encouraging them to seek advice from a GP if they have a concern about someone close to them. It has embedded the National Dementia Friends Awareness programme into its DCPC training so that all staff understand what it is like to live with dementia so they are better placed to respond to customers’ needs. Nigel Featham, Managing Director for Arriva Yorkshire, said: “Our employees do all they can to assist vulnerable passengers and since working more closely with organisations such as Wakefield Council, the NHS, the Alzheimer’s Society and the Dementia Action Alliance, we have been able to build on our current driver training. We are now championing this work, inspiring other Arriva companies and neighbouring businesses to do the same.”

BEST PRACTICE › DEMENTIA AWARENESS Southern Vectis is working in partnership with Age UK to towards making the Isle of Wight a dementia-friendly community
Southern Vectis
Southern Vectis has been working in partnership with Age UK. Earlier this year, the Isle of Wight bus operator introduced Safe Journey Cards, allowing people with memory loss to identify themselves to drivers at the start of their journey. In addition, Southern Vectis staff are now regularly trained by Age UK to make them aware of the unique needs of these customers. The scheme has already won Southern Vectis praise after a driver paid extra special attention to a passenger who showed her card when boarding his bus. Sue Pugh was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease ive years ago. Since then she has avoided bus travel because she was anxious that she might forget her stop. However, when she heard Southern Vectis was working with Age UK, she decided to try out its services. She boarded a 37 service journey from Ryde to Haylands and showed her Safe Journey Card to driver Tony Senyszyn. She said: “I was reassured when he knew all about the card and we had a little chat. He made sure I knew which bus I was on and said that if I had any worries to let him know. When I got off, he waved and tooted, and made sure I was on my way. He was brilliant.” Sue attends an Age UK memory group where friends have also shared their good stories about Southern Vectis services. She added: “Other people have told me about their experiences and they can’t fault the drivers. They really care. I’m quite happy to get on a bus now knowing that I’ll be looked after.” Tony, who has worked for Southern Vectis 32 | COACH & BUS WEEK | July 2, 2014 028_032_CBW1144_Dementia.indd 32
for eight years, commented: “Many of my passengers are in their 80s or 90s, so I am very aware that they need some extra help. Any type of additional training to help us make people feel more comfortable is a great thing.” Age UK Isle of Wight is working towards making the Island a dementia-friendly community, and has established partnerships with businesses in Ryde and Newport to promote awareness. Southern Vectis has pledged its support through the Safe Journey Card, which is Island-wide, and distributed by Age UK through healthcare professionals. The cards are printed with a range of messages about an individual’s needs, from ‘I’m visually impaired’ to ‘Please wait for me to sit down, in case I fall.’ Southern Vectis has also agreed to offer its travel shops at Newport and Ryde as a safe haven for people with memory loss to go if they are feeling lost or confused. The shop will display a ‘Dementia Friendly Isle of Wight’ sticker in the window and staff will receive dementia awareness training. Matt Kitchin, General Manager at Southern Vectis told CBW: “Our DCPC training is currently in the process of being restructured. Independently of that, Age UK approached us about 12 months ago. They’re working a strategy from David Cameron. “Age UK offers a two-hour course which highlights the different types of dementia and gives participants an appreciation. After all, it’s very dificult to identify someone with dementia – the condition can be mistaken for other things. Put simply, there is a risk people may not be treated as compassionately as they should be.
“Our controllers were trained irst. If drivers have someone onboard who is confused, their irst port of call is a controller. I sat in on the training – it was most interesting. I now feel a lot more conident in how to deal with dementia – something which is beneicial not just at work, but at home too. It’s now such a common condition. “For us as an operator, Age UK has been really good to work with. While we will incorporate it into our DCPC, we’re currently running it as additional training outside the DCPC.”

OPINION › JEREMY WILKINSON Business Manager at Hybrid Drives at Siemens Industry
Stop Green Bus fleet uptake from stalling With a limited number of cities and towns offering a green fleet bus service for their population, Jeremy Wilkinson, Business Manager – Hybrid Drives at Siemens Industry, argues greater incentivisation through the continuation of the Green Bus Fund and modification of the Bus Service Operators Grant is essential to move the subsidisation from pure diesel to low or zero emission technologies. Such measures will help to remove the capital outlay barriers associated with investing in buses using the latest ultra-low emission technology, so many more cities and towns can experience environmental benefits and operators can take advantage of the fuel saving opportunities provided The recent publication by the United Nations of a major report looking at the impact of future climate change, as well as the reported incidents of high pollution levels afflicting London and Paris, has put the environment and its effects once more onto the front pages. It appears there is still plenty to be done to counteract the consequences of man-made environmental damage so that we can bequeath a better, less polluted world to future generations. It is a continuing battle that will be heavily influenced by all sectors of society, be they choices made by individuals or the actions of major industrial giants. Central to this long running battle is the role played by transport and how we are going to shape a greener, low carbon transport infrastructure for our towns and cities in the years ahead. With predictions for a steep rise in the number of people planning to live in densely populated urban areas, the demand for affordable, efficient and cleaner mass transport system solutions to cope with such growth is becoming ever more pressing as the years and decades roll by.
34 | COACH & BUS WEEK | July 2, 2014 034_035_CBW1144_Siemens.indd 34
Critical to any successful urbanbased transport solution is the role played by bus fleets. As a familiar and favoured mode of transport, buses have mass consumer appeal and can offer a real alternative to the common use of motor vehicles in our already congested towns and cities. Indeed, according to Government figures, some 4.7 billion bus passenger journeys were made in 2012, accounting for over 60% of all public transport trips. The attraction of the bus is clear to see. While the Government clearly wishes to further improve the use of bus travel and the use of low or zero emission bus fleets can be improved still further, there also has to be an acceptance of the reality on the ground and perhaps a strategic move towards a more integrated approach in this critical area. For instance, looking at the two main current Government-backed incentives designed to help the sector, it could be argued that they are, in some sense, at odds with each other. We have the Green Bus Fund, a multi-million pound funding option available to encourage bus operators and local councils to make the switch to more environmentally-friendly bus fleets such as using hybrid or electric power sources to cut carbon emissions. On the other hand, we have the Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG), a state economic subsidy to artificially cut the price of diesel fuel to ensure that the bus network can remain affordable and available for use. While any effort to enable a bus transport option to remain should be applauded – particularly in rural areas – it could be argued that this type of subsidy does nothing to encourage a switch away from high carbon fuel sources such as diesel and incite a move towards green power technologies which companies such as Siemens are developing to tackle such issues. Thinking again about the Green Bus Fund, many in the industry
fear the incentive to persuade purchasers and bus operators to plump for zero emission bus fleets could at some point be reduced or even eradicated. This would be a serious mistake with the potential to halt progress and stall the building momentum in this area. Investment return for such fleets can be upwards of four years and without the economic support incentives like the Green Bus Fund provide, we could well find the willingness to embrace the available green alternatives severely compromised on the basis of cost. Manufacturers
and the supply chain are at all times endeavouring to increase efficiencies, but the reality is that this can only go so far, and further incentives for potential purchasers are necessary going forward. The automotive market is benefitting from significant Government investment to build the infrastructure for electric vehicles and the same kind of investment level witnessed with the advent of ‘plug in’ charging points across the nation needs to be replicated to support greener bus fleets. While some towns and cities have grasped the nettle and gone down this route, www.coachandbusweek.com

many still have not. The need for continued and renewed incentivisation which appreciates the commercial reality facing bus operators wishing to implement an environmentallyfriendly bus fleet is clear. Perhaps a more integrated strategic approach combining the benefits of the Green Bus Fund with a fresh look at the aims and objectives of the BSOG could inject fresh impetus into the long-term debate about the type of urban bus transport system we want. The technological answers to drive the benefits of low or zero www.coachandbusweek.com

emission green bus fleets are here now. It is incumbent upon all stakeholders to ensure such technology is optimised to its fullest extent so it can deliver the kind of sustainable urban transport solution everyone seeking a greener transport future is looking for. After all, we do not want our nation’s towns and cities to end up resembling the smogridden experience of places like Beijing, do we?

THE BIG PICTURE This year’s Glastonbury Festival ran from Wednesday June 25 to Sunday June 29. It’s organised by Michael Eavis on his own land, Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset and it’s a significant logistical operation getting people to and from the site. National Express provides direct services, often subcontracting to smaller operators to provide the capacity required. Trains also run to nearby Castle Cary railway station where several operators provide a fleet of double-deckers to transfer ticket holders. Among them this year was a goodly number of venerable Bristol VRTs, a type now rarely seen in service elsewhere. Festival stalwart is Centurion Travel based in nearby Midsomer Norton. Proprietor Martin Spiller, a qualified engineer and coachbuilder has always enjoyed making the most of his vehicles and that included two of three former Bebb Travel Duple Laser-bodied Bedford YNTs owned, which he repowered with Volvo FL7 engines many years ago. Working Bedfords are a rarity these days, but Andy Izatt photographed one of them with Martin driving on the first day of the festival. It was transporting a healthy load along the A37 road to the Worthy View campsite.

GLAZING SOLUTIONS
Keeping glazing intact This week’s Industry Guide looks at suppliers of various products and services tailored towards glazing and windscreen repairs

ooking after the windscreen on any vehicle is clearly very important, but the expense of replacing a coach or bus windscreen is particularly high. For that reason, it is a good idea to take advantage of companies offering to ill in chips and cracks before the entire windscreen is compromised. Many of these companies can do this on site – glazing doesn’t need to be a pain... For operators with the personnel to service their own vehicles, many products are on the market which allow operators to repair and replace windscreens themselves, with the potential to save a signiicant amount of money. If this
isn’t an option, there are irms with excellent, nationwide coverage which can be called out to put the vehicle back on the road as soon as possible. Passenger vehicles are required to have safety glass in place and any tinting applied to the windows which is within the driver’s ‘vision reference zone’ must let at least 70% of light through (75% for windscreens). This does not apply to windows behind the driver in a coach or bus, except for those facing the rear, or those which are part of a door. While many passengers may like their privacy, using a dedicated supplier for glazing will ensure this is well balanced with actually being able to see out properly. ■

GLAZING SOLUTIONS JT HANDTOOLS
JT Handtools is a specialist company manufacturing and supplying tools to the automotive glass industry. in the UK and Europe for the past 28 years. Its recent introduction - the Windscreen Wizard – has been causing a stir in the industry of late. It is a great product, but it must be remembered that the family-run Sheffield company offer a whole lot more too. The company’s specialist manufactured tools are of a supreme quality, all carrying lifetime guarantees and providing reliable service. The diversified product range continues to grow by following trends and listening to the customer. JT Handtools offers all sorts for a body shop: car care products, clip removal tools, consumables and safety wear, glass handling tools, glass repair products, sensor tack gels and pads, windscreen clips and much, much more. Director Richard Vaughan, who runs the business with his brother Daniel, said: “Our unique service has established our place in this industry. Over the last three

Windscreen Wizards allows fast removal of windscreens decades we have worked hard to build up good relationships with clients all over the place and because we are a family-run business who put the customers’ needs first, people are keen to work with us. “Also, because our warehouse is always well stocked, if people get in touch needing a specific
product we can get this too them as quickly as possible with a minimum of fuss.” JT Handtools launched its new website over the summer. It is easy to navigate around and makes it even easier to buy products from them because operators can set up an online account.
Richard added: “We have been pleased with the new website. Everything we do is aimed at making things easier for our customers and making sure they get the best possible service.” Windscreen Wizard (patent pending), is a specialised bespoke manufactured product which allows the user to remove a whole windscreen in minutes. Designed in conjunction with specialist engineers, windscreen removal companies and windscreen technician experts, this product is a perfect solution to the growing need for a wire removal system for modern day windscreens. Using a system of wires and suction cups, Windscreen Wizard is remarkably fast and can see a windscreen completely removed in minutes, as can been seen on a 10-minute Youtube demonstration at http://youtube/ GWVZ5AbXPLM T: 01142 44 99 89 E: sales@jthandtools.co.uk/ sales@windscreenwizard.com W: www.jthandtools.co.uk www.windscreenwizard.com

ESPRIT WINDSCREEN REPAIR SYSTEMS In today’s world of increased fuel costs, increased insurance and increased inflation, it is more important than ever for the modern transport business to look for new ways of reducing costs wherever possible. Windscreen repairs provide coach and bus operators the chance to save both time and money compared to glass replacement. Instead of calling in a glass specialist to repair that stone chip that, the question to ask yourself is “Can I do that myself?” The advantages of an operator carrying out its own repairs are reduced cost and reduced vehicle downtime. A repair can be carried out in 20 to 30 minutes and the vehicle is back on the road. The alternative is to cross your fingers and hope that the damage does not spread before you can take the vehicle off the road for a day to wait for an outside contractor to repair the glass. What a repair will do is as follows. They are permanent repairs that restore the mechanical strength to the damaged glass and improve the cosmetic aspect of the damage by

90%. The latest Esprit equipment makes repairing quick and easy, as well as the latest in up to date repair equipment each kit comes with a free training at the Esprit training centre as well as a photo manual and training DVD for back up. To find out how easy windscreen repairing is, operators can ask for a copy of the Esprit windscreen repair training DVD. Established in 1981, Esprit is a leading manufacturer and supplier of windscreen repair tools and equipment. The Esprit windscreen repair systems have passed BS 251:1994 and AS/NZS 2366.2.1999 standards testing. The Esprit windscreen repair system is also used in motor sport, being the repairer of the Harrods and the West McLaren teams for the 1996 World GT Endurance Championship. It was also part of the G-Force Porsche GT1 team in 1998. Esprit are currently working with GT teams at all the major meetings in Europe and the USA.

Monday: The familiar manic press day. Andy’s enjoying a long overdue week away on holiday but we manage to leave the office at a decent hour of the day. Tuesday: A busy day in the office doing admin, writing and being involved with internal meetings. Also edit feature copy submitted by others for forthcoming issues. Compile two spreads of ‘Deliveries’ pages. Wednesday: Spend much of the day feature writing, but as always, I end up multi-tasking – no rest for the wicked. Responding to our recent invitation for contributors, a friendly reader calls to discuss his interesting ideas for features. I admit I’ve got a bit of a backlog in getting back to people and apologise accordingly. Thursday: Another day in the office working on material for both this issue and the weeks ahead. Enjoy a catch-up on the phone with a member of a large operator’s communications team. We progress some feature ideas and earmark mutually-beneficial timescales. A reader sends me a stunning photograph with a difference which will make a cracking ‘Big Picture’ in a forthcoming issue. Friday: A hectic day in the office working against the clock, but we keep smiling and get the work done. On a lighter note, one of my colleagues is successfully convinced that a passport is required to visit Scotland after the country recently declared independence from the UK. We all manage to keep straight faces – until another colleague spills the beans. Booo… All good fun.

EYMS in the spotlight On the Yorkshire Buses, a Channel 5 documentary series looking at East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS), premiers on Friday, July 11 at 2000hrs. The eight-part series jumps onboard with the lovable, straight-talking men and women of EYMS – Britain’s biggest family-run bus company – in their mission to keep Yorkshire moving. It appears that the programme is quite similar to Channel 5’s famous and dramatic Eddie Stobart series. Episode One is entitled ‘Summer Holiday’ and focuses on the start of the summer school holidays and at EYMS HQ in Hull. Drivers are also taking their holidays, resulting in a shortage of drivers for the busy Saturday shift. It’s all hands on deck for Controller Simon Cowie as he juggles timetables and drivers to keep the services going. But there’s a problem – a driver down on one of the rural routes means it could be cancelled. For rural communities these routes are a lifeline and Simon sends ex-bank manager and bus driver Rod Hebden to cover. Rod normally drives buses along Hull’s city routes but armed with a hand-drawn map and a bus full of villagers he heads into the ‘great unknown.’ But as the signposts disappear and the roads become more winding and narrow, Rod gets lost… and the passengers aren’t happy. Back in Hull, the busy Saturday
lunchtime is starting, queues are forming, the pressure is on and Controller Simon has to call into action East Yorkshire’s ‘secret weapon,’ Customer Relations Supervisor, Brian Page. Brian’s job is to bust the queues and get the buses out on time but even with Brian running all over the place like a ‘turbo charged penguin,’ will they keep the buses running to schedule? Meanwhile in Scarborough, Paul Fryatt is putting out the timetables for
the summer open-top tour buses. This is high season and the time to make some much needed extra revenue but rival open-top bus operator Shoreline Suncruisers has the same idea and boss Tom Stephenson is determined to get ahead of Paul in the beachfront battle of the buses. But with one of East Yorkshire’s open top buses failing to start, Paul’s summer season begins under a cloud and gets even worse when a jackknifed lorry blocks the whole of the seafront.
Shelter for busless Cornish village A small Cornish village has unveiled a brand new bus shelter – despite having had no bus service for the past six years. The smart new concrete structure was specially built for the people of Bissoe for free by a generous local construction firm. Grateful residents hope the new shelter will be a sign that their old service could one day be restored. Simon Lucas, Production Manager at Cornish Concrete Products, said his company was just doing its bit for the local community. He said: “The old bus shelter was falling down and we thought it was starting to become a bit of a hazard. “We approached the council and
asked if we could provide a new one for nothing. “They agreed but said it would have to be similar to the old one, so we made one the same size but carved the word ‘Bissoe’ into the front of it. “There’s no real focal point to the village when people come here, so we thought this would mark it out.
“We are aware there are no buses coming here at the moment but we hope the new shelter might encourage them to come back. “It would certainly help us if they did, as it would help our employees to get to work more easily if there was a bus service.” While Bissoe is to be commended for attempting to cement community relations, we could not help but conclude in the CBW office that ideas for reintroducing a bus service to the village would appear to lack firm foundations. Indeed, in the absence of concrete evidence, it would appear unwise suggest otherwise. All good fun.

Ian Downie joins Wrightbus as Sales MD Wrightbus has announced that Ian Downie has been appointed as Managing Director of Sales and Customcare for the company. He started his new position on June 30, 2014. Ian’s new role is to lead the Wrightbus Sales and Customcare team and he will have responsibility for all sales, marketing and aftersales activities for Europe including the UK and Republic of Ireland. He has extensive experience of the coach and bus industry, having worked with Wrightbus’ partner Volvo Bus for almost 30 years. His career began as an apprentice with Leyland Bus, following which he joined Volvo where he gained knowledge of all areas of the business including sales administration, finance and dealer management. He has held director roles within Volvo for 18 years, including Aftermarket Director and most recently as Product and Coach Director, being responsible for the launch of the hybrid and all
Ian Downie Euro 6 product ranges. Commenting on his new role, Ian said: “I’m really looking forward to joining the team at Wrightbus – a company I’ve greatly admired for a long time after working with
them for more than 20 years. I have seen them grow their market share through innovation and quality, and their forward thinking approach to identifying and moving into new market segments through engineering and new technology with products such as the StreetLite and New Routemaster has been impressive. “In particular, my experience on the chassis and body support side means I’m very well placed to develop the Customcare offer and I am able to bring this, along with my knowledge of the major bus groups to Wrightbus as we move forward.” Mark Nodder, Wrights Group Managing Director, added: “Ian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience of the industry to Wrightbus and I believe he will have a significant contribution to make as our company increases its share of new markets, and develops Customcare to become the service organisation by which others will be measured.”

40 years’ service at Stockton
Norwich bus drivers celebrate long service
Four Stagecoach North East bus drivers are celebrating a shared 40th anniversary with the Stockton depot. Ian Jameson, John Bacon, Ken Smith and Alfie Morgan all started on the buses in 1974 when the garage was under the management of Cleveland Transit. “To do this job for so long you really need to enjoy helping people and dealing with the public, which we all do,” said Alfie Morgan, aged 59 from Thornaby. “Especially meeting the regulars, it’s getting them to work every day that makes the job special.” John Bacon, 62 from Middlesbrough, added: “Working on the buses you get to know a lot of people, who support you and use the bus service all the time. We all love driving and it gets in your blood, although we didn’t expect to make 40 years. It really is one big happy family here at Stagecoach in Stockton.” With a combined experience of 160 years, the four drivers are said to be very proud of the company and its achievements over the
years. “The buses have changed dramatically, with an upgraded service for both drivers and passengers, and we are looking forward to being part of the future,” Alfie continued. “We are all fit and healthy and still up to the job, so long may that continue.” Abbey Pettigrew, Operations
Manager at the Teesside depot, said: “These guys are the backbone of the business and a credit to the company. “We are very proud of them, as they drive in all conditions in an ever changing environment, and for them all to have reached 40 years in the job is amazing and a real achievement.”
Two bus drivers from Norwich are celebrating after they completed 40 years service at First Eastern Counties. Mark Ellis and Roy Theobald will be presented with certificates to mark their long service. Mark, 58, from Catton, has been driving buses around the city for four decades after he joined the firm as a conductor. “Buses have changed a lot over the years. In the 1970s we used to drive the same route all the time. I drove from the university to Hellesdon and that was a great time in my career because I really got to know the people,” recalled Mark. Roy Theobald, 61, who lives in north Norwich, said: “I trained as a mechanic before I was taken on as a bus driver. The man who offered me the job gave me a six-month trial and the rest is history. “I have had some really happy times on the buses and I have worked with all sorts of characters.”
Paul Boughton and Jim Warwick have joined the board of Quartix Holdings as Non-executive Directors. Both Paul and Jim have strong track records in international business development, and their experience and guidance will be invaluable for Quartix in continuing its expansion in the US market and elsewhere. The appointment comes in the wake of Quartix opening a new office in Chicago in April, which
has now secured orders from customers in 10 States. Sales and support staff are being recruited and trained and the company will complement this with a network of distributors. Development of the distribution network is set to begin early in the third quarter. Paul has over 25 years’ experience in identifying, negotiating and completing acquisitions in the USA and Europe. He spent 13 years as Business Development Director for
Spectris plc and is currently Head of Business Development at Brammer plc, leading its European acquisition programme. He also held a main board position at Consort Medical PLC and was Group Corporate Development Director at IMI plc, a FTSE100 company. Jim is Chief Operating Officer at Abcam plc, a global leader in the supply of innovative protein research tools. He originally joined Abcam as Technical Director,
progressing to UK Managing Director in 2004 and Chief Operating Officer in 2009. Prior to that, he worked on IT, software and web development initiatives for telecommunications consultancy group Analysis. “We are delighted to welcome Paul and Jim to Quartix,” said Managing Director Andy Walters. “They join us at an exciting time in the growth and development of our company.”
