Arriva to grow on max power?

A

s you’ll have seen, our main cover story this week is the launch of Arriva’s MAX (sic) service standard – and not without justification because along with the associated Sapphire brand, it’s an interesting and excellent success story for the bus industry. MAX was being formally launched in Newcastle as this issue was in the process of being sent to the printers on Monday evening. When my colleague Andy Izatt caught up with Regional Managing Director for Arriva North East and Yorkshire Nigel Featham (see p6-7), he revealed that MAX is to be introduced on 14 of Arriva North East’s interurban services, amounting to about 70 vehicles and 35 buses on four routes in Yorkshire – initially at least. According to Nigel, Sapphire has worked everywhere it was originally introduced, so there are high hopes for MAX too. What’s all the more remarkable is that MAX is being implemented in part of Arriva’s operating

territory where ‘economic conditions continue to be challenging.’ For such a long time, this corner of the globe seemed to be something of a backwater for Arriva – and where managed decline appeared to be the order of the day. Therefore, investing and growing the market in the north east is most commendable. To put the investment into perspective, around a quarter of Arriva North East’s fleet will have been enhanced once all the planned Sapphire and MAX upgrades have been implemented – no small sum. While I would not wish to jinx things, I hope Arriva has impressed judges for the forthcoming UK Bus Awards (assuming they’ve entered of course). Whatever happens, we’ll find out on October 9 when the shortlist is announced on – not forgetting the actual ceremony itself on November 18.

Arriva goes MAX Regional Managing Director for Arriva North East and Yorkshire, Nigel Featham talks to Andy Izatt about MAX a new brand for interurban services Arriva North East and Arriva Yorkshire have announced the launch of MAX, a new brand developed in conjunction with Best Impressions for interurban services. Like Sapphire, and building on what has already been learnt from that brand, MAX is being backed with high profile marketing and higher specification vehicles. It also incorporates tailored training packages for all drivers. MAX is to be introduced on 14 of Arriva North East’s interurban services encompassing around 70 vehicles and an initial four routes in Yorkshire which lend themselves to the upgrade using another 35 buses – all doubledeckers. It’s the latest stage in a programme of enhancements that have already seen timetable and punctuality improvements introduced on the routes to deliver high levels of service reliability. The MAX specification includes free WiFi and high backed E-leather seats on the vehicles, enhanced customer service training for drivers and a no quibble money back guarantee. While some routes will use refurbished buses, others will receive new vehicles, including two of the four Yorkshire services. Some routes are expected to see frequency enhancements. Offering free on board WiFi

supports Arriva’s app which was launched first in Arriva North East’s area in January followed by Arriva Yorkshire. Just one of the benefits is that users can see the location of their bus in real-time and there were 150,000 downloads before it was rolled out nationally from the end of May. There have now been a quarter of a million downloads. The first MAX route to be launched was Arriva North East’s X10/X11 between Blyth and Cramlington, which was unveiled in Newcastle on Monday (September 1) with buses entering service the following day. 12 Wrightbus Gemini 2DLs have been refurbished and carry the strap line ‘Quick links’. Arriva Yorkshire’s 268 (Dewsbury – Bradford) follows tomorrow (Thursday) with a launch in Bradford Centenary Square. That service uses 12 refurbished ADL Enviro400s carrying the strap line ‘Grand Yorkshire Connections’. Both events feature Titan the Robot. Titan has performed at a variety of public events, including the Commonwealth Games, Children in need and appeared live on stage with pop star Rhianna. Further upgrades by Christmas will include X15/X18 (Berwick – Newcastle), X14 (Thropton – Newcastle) X26/X27 (Catterick – Darlington), X66 (Middlesbrough

6 | COACH & BUS WEEK | September 3, 2014 006_007_CBW1153_News.indd 6

– Darlington) and X93 (Middlesbrough – Scarborough – Whitby), the rest following in 2015. MAX is being introduced alongside further Sapphire upgrades and once all are in place, around a quarter of Arriva North East’s fleet will have been enhanced. Based on the positive customer reception given to the initial four Sapphire services around the country where there has been 10% growth despite quite different demographics, both brands are expected to quickly generate strong ridership growth. The business case for Sapphire was based on a minimum 9% passenger growth to cover the costs of the upgrade – 6% in year one and 3% in year two. “The standout feature of Sapphire is that it has worked everywhere we have introduced it,” Nigel Featham, Regional Managing Director for Arriva North East and Yorkshire told CBW. “And the surge in custom has come almost straightaway. Those 50 vehicles on the initial four routes launched in 2013 are now being joined by 140 buses on another 11 services being rolled out in 2014. Once that’s complete, Sapphire routes will have a combined turnover of £30m, and will be adding around £3m of new business. There will also be more Sapphire routes next year.” Turning to MAX, Nigel said: “MAX offers a great package

of benefits for travellers. We believe it will be a huge hit, but it’s a rather different product to Sapphire, which is marketed as a premium service. MAX is intended to help market a wider network and emphasises the quick, frequent nature of the routes and provides a very modern and fresh feel.” Nigel explained that MAX is just one of a number of initiatives that have and are being rewarded by passenger growth, all the more notable in the north east where economic conditions continue to

The new brand is being supported by leaflet drops, an aspect of Sapphire’s successful marketing strategy. “We’re seeing lots of examples of growth in the north east,” he said. “These have come on the back of excellent service delivery, investment in new buses, lots of work to strengthen the network with improved frequencies and simplified route patterns, and fares initiatives as well as Sapphire. “MAX adds to the programme

of measures we’re introducing to develop the business with the help of our staff and in partnership with stakeholders. Now that we have started, the upgrades will be rolled out quite quickly. “We’re growing the market despite a depressed local economy and we’re encouraged by what we are seeing. The services selected for MAX upgrades are ripe for growth and it will be interesting to see passenger reaction, which we believe will be very positive.”

York A59 works and new Park & Ride site completed £22.7m project means York now has largest Park & Ride network in the UK City of York Council, and contractors Balfour Beatty, have announced the outer ring road works on the A59, which formed part of the new Poppleton Bar Park & Ride site, are oficially complete. The £22.7m pound project – 70% funded by the government – was created in partnership with Balfour Beatty and designers CH2M Hill. As part of the project, a new Park & Ride was created at Poppleton, and a larger facility created near to the previous Askham Bar Park & Ride site. It is hoped that congestion levels along the routes into the city centre will be cut by the increased parking capacity at Askham Bar and the introduction of a new 600-vehicle facility at Poppleton Bar. The Park & Ride service now operates from six sites around the city, provided in partnership with First, making it one of the largest Park & Ride services in the UK, which helps to reduce congestion and pollution in the city centre. The Poppleton service uses a leet of electric buses, which helps to lower air emissions and congestion and offers low-carbon travel options.

Services from the new Poppleton Bar Park & Ride are operated by First Will Pearson, First York Business Manager, said: “This is great news for customers using the new Park & Ride site at Poppleton. Reliability is crucial to our customers and I’m sure that with the great service, frequent journeys and new, electric, luxury buses, we can encourage even more people to use Park & Ride.” Cllr David Levene, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “The £22.7m project represents one of the largest single investments in York’s transport infrastructure since the northern ring road was built in the 80s. This has been our stated priority for the last three years and builds on our existing portfolio of Park & Rides sites. This is critical for York’s

future economic prosperity and environmental wellbeing and we are delighted to be delivering this major improvement.” Eddie Tribe, North East Delivery Unit Managing Director, Balfour Beatty said: “It is a great pleasure to hand over these fantastic new Park & Ride sites to City of York Council. Working closely with our customer, these challenging projects were successfully completed in heavily traficked areas, with Askham Bar having the additional challenge of being constructed on a reclaimed landill site. These new Park & Ride sites will ease congestion and provide people with improved journeys into York city centre.”

bus operations continued to grow both passenger volume and revenue year-on-year. Like-for-like passenger volume growth for the 12 week period was 0.9%. Higher commercial revenue contributed most to overall revenue growth, with concessionary, contract, tendered and school revenue also continuing to grow. The group highlighted local authorities ‘continuing to seek to minimise concessionary reimbursement amounts’ and said it would continue its endeavours to deliver good growth in commercial revenue to offset inlationary cost increases.

In London, revenue growth was strong during the period due to the commencement of two new contracts and the continuing effect of contracts won in the last inancial year. Revenue growth was, however, slightly below expectations due to quality incentive income being adversely affected by trafic disruption related to continuing road works. Excluding the uplift in contract prices to compensate for the cessation of Bus Service Operators’ Grant, revenue increased by 8.7%. The group said its focus is on keeping costs under control and

Stagecoach revenue growing across the board Stagecoach Group has published an interim management statement, for the start of the inancial year to August 26, 2014. The group said there has been no material change to its expected adjusted earnings per share for the year ending April 30, 2015. Like-for-like revenue growth, for the 12 weeks ended July 20, was 4% in UK regional bus operations, 14.4% in London bus operations, 4.9% in UK rail and 5.7% in Virgin Rail group. Revenue growth in the North American business for the three months ended July 31 was 4.9%. Stagecoach said its UK region

ComfortDelGro posts record revenue quarter ComfortDelGro has released its results for the second quarter of 2014, ended June 30. All of the following figures are in Singapore dollars. Revenue increased by 11.9% to $1,016.3m (2013: $908.4m), a company record which crossed the $1bn-mark for a single quarter for the first time. The bulk of the revenue increase came from overseas revenue, though a positive foreign currency translation boosted revenue growth from $97.5m to $107.9m. The company’s operating profit also improved, rising 6.5% to $119.9m (2013: $112.6m). Operating profit from overseas operations accounted from more than half of this figure, up 3.9% from the previous 46.8%. Net profit increased 9.9% to $75.7m (2013: $68.9m) while EBITDA went up by $11.6m to $207.8m. Earnings per share stood at 3.55 cents, up from 3.26 cents in 2013. For the half-year ended June 30, 2014, group revenue increased by 10.6% to a record $1.967bn while net profit attributable to shareholders grew by 9.8% to $139.0m. ComfortDelGro Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer, Kua Hong Pak, said: “It has been a challenging yet rewarding quarter and we will continue to work hard and seek opportunities

to sustain our growth.” Second quarter revenue from the bus business increased by 18.4% to $517.2m as growth from operations in the UK and Singapore more than offset a decline in Australia and China. Revenue from overseas bus operations continued to account for the bulk of ComfortDelGro’s bus revenue – amounting to 62.9%. In Singapore, revenue from the bus business increased by 10.2% to $191.9m, after an increase in both fare prices and ridership. Revenue from the bus business in the UK increased by 64.5% to $224.1m, as the actual increase in revenue of $73.5m was aided by a positive currency translation effect. The group said the increase in revenue came mainly from contributions from Metroline West, service enhancements and higher Quality Incentive Contracts (QIC) revenue and from new services added. Revenue from the bus business in Australia fell by 16.2% to $101.2m after the loss of two contracts as well as a negative currency translation effect. Revenue from the China bus business was $5.8m lower following the divestment of the bus business in Shenyang. The overseas bus business accounted for 62.9% of total bus revenue and 90.4% of group bus operating profit.

First donates advertising space to Macmillan

FirstGroup has donated more than £145,000 worth of advertising space on its fleet of 6,400 buses across the country in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The donation will raise awareness of Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning this September, and is made as part of First’s partnership with the cancer support charity. The event will see thousands of people host coffee mornings in their homes, offices, and communities on Friday, September 26 to raise funds for Macmillan. FirstGroup employees hosted more than 40 coffee mornings in 2013 raising over £22,000. First hopes to beat that total this year with events planned at First depots and offices throughout the country, in addition to its donation of advertising space on buses. Katie Smart, FirstGroup’s Corporate Responsibility and Community Manager, said: “Every single First bus in the UK

will feature a Macmillan coffee morning advert from September. We’re pleased to help Macmillan reach our customers and hope our support will contribute towards a record breaking number of coffee mornings on September 26. “First’s three year partnership with Macmillan began in 2012 after our employees overwhelmingly voted it as our national charity partner. Our aim is to raise £1m in cash and kind by March 2015 – we’re well on the way to reaching that target with almost £900,000 raised so far.” Sally Hill, Partnership Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “The advertising space on First buses will help us to reach out to many more members of local communities across the country who may be inspired to fundraise by holding a coffee morning. That combined with the money raised by First staff’s own coffee mornings will help Macmillan to ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.”

ended July 31, 2014. The group said that although there are a number of challenges to growing profit in the year ending April 30, 2015, overall current trading is satisfactory and it remains on course to meet expectations. September 3, 2014 | COACH & BUS WEEK | 9 01/09/2014 22:39

differentiated products for customers, in line with our strategy of manufacturing and launching unique product. “There will, of course, be synergies between Topdeck and Back-Roads.” Topdeck was set up in London in 1973 by Flight Centre’s current Managing Director Graham Turner, when he and fellow Australian Geoff Lomas purchased a double-decker bus and began running overland coach tours.

Turner later became one of the founders of Flight Centre in 1982 and he bought back into Topdeck as an investor in 2003 and currently holds a 4% stake in the company, which will now be sold to Flight Centre. Topdeck, which specialises in trips across Europe, Australasia, North America, the Middle East and North Africa, had sales of £43m in 2013 with earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (ebitda) of £4m. www.coachandbusweek.com

Redwing orders new Tourismos Redwing Coaches will be taking delivery of eight new Euro 6 Mercedes-Benz Tourismo Coaches in March 2015. The new vehicles will replace the current coaches in Evan Evans Tours branding. They will be given Evan Evans branding and operate on the same contract. Nigel Taylor, joint Managing Director of Redwing Coaches, told CBW: “90% of our fleet consists of Mercedes-Benz Tourismos. We like the product and are more than

happy with the backup service provided. In a separate development, all four Scania Irizar i6 coaches in the Redwing Coaches fleet have been fully wrapped in a Call of Duty Advanced Warfare promotion and dispatched to various locations across Europe. The operator was contacted by a London marketing agency to see if we could fulfill a brief to wrap four 53 seat executive vehicles for a forthcoming promotion for the

Wreckage from fatal France coach crash released Lawyers representing 21 Alvechurch Middle School children and four adults seriously injured in a coach crash in France have welcomed the release of the wreckage. Its was Solus Coaches vehicle. A teacher was killed in the crash when the coach came off the road near Chalons-en-Champagne, 90 miles east of Paris, on February 19, 2012. UK proceedings for compensation were put on hold following a Birmingham High Court decision after an application by the defendant tour operator, Interschool Travel Limited (trading as ‘Interski’). The company which organised the school trip said the civil claims for compensation should not be progressed through the English courts until the coach company’s insurers had access to the coach to carry out an inspection of it. Following repeated requests, the French authorities have now agreed to release the coach wreckage for inspection. Clive Garner, of Irwin Mitchell, who represents the passengers, said: “The English coach driver has been charged with involuntary

manslaughter by the authorities in France and a criminal trial there is expected early next year. Despite this, the civil proceedings in England have unfortunately been placed on hold as the coach company’s insurer considered that it could not conclude its investigations into the cause of the accident without access to the coach. “We are concerned that while the driver of the coach has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, we still do not know exactly what caused the accident. It is crucial that we determine why this coach left the road, first and foremost so that justice can be done, but also so that lessons are learnt to reduce the risk of a similar tragedy occurring in the future. “We have repeatedly called for improved coach safety measures including driver training, monitoring and supervision to reduce the risk of coach crashes occurring. While the cause of this tragic accident is yet to be determined, there are strong suspicions that driver fatigue was a causative factor.”

21st Century trading ahead of expectations 21st Century Technology plc has announced a half year performance slightly ahead of management expectations for the six months ended June 30, 2014. The company attributed this to stronger than anticipated demand for the company’s onbus systems both in the UK and Sweden. In the rail division, the installation of the majority of the advanced CCTV contract announced last year contributed significantly to the results. The company’s operational highlights during the last six months include contract extensions with two major UK bus operators. Mark Elliott, Chairman of 21st Century Technology, said: “This has been a good half year for the business in respect of our expectations as we continue to tackle the challenges facing us and I remain cautiously optimistic. “We await decisions on a number of innovative major system proposals to both rail and bus operators, which if successful may begin in half two

and provide the foundations for a return to growth in 2015. “Furthermore, we are reviewing a number of acquisition opportunities to complement the organic business development; and facilitate the group’s aim to move towards a ‘smart integrator’ and provider of managed systems for on-board systems to the bus and rail industry.” Russ Singleton, Chief Executive for 21st Century Technology, added: “The business is an established platform on which to build a leading specialist service provider of CCTV and monitoring systems to the fleet and network operators in the attractive bus and rail industries. “Our strategy includes a mixture of organic and, potentially, acquisitive growth based on the current platform, which involves changing the business from installing and supporting standalone systems on vehicles to a more integrated approach, with a broader range of on and off vehicle technologies and the associated back-office software to deliver a fully managed service to our customers.”

A NEW WEEKEND NIGHT BUS is set to launch in Barnsley. Stagecoach Yorkshire is introducing the late night N27 service between Barnsley, Brierley and Grimethorpe on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. The service will began in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, with hourly buses at 0025, 0125, 0225 and 0325hrs. It will be the second night bus in Barnsley, following the launch of the N66 service in Birdwell, Hoyland and Elsecar. John Young, acting Commercial Director at Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “We’re delighted to be launching this second late night weekend service as part of a major package of improvements on our Pontefract Road routes. “For passengers who enjoy visiting pub and clubs, or those on a night out in the town centre, it offers a safe and affordable way home to areas including Lundwood, Cudworth, Shafton, Brierley and Grimethorpe.” A £1.2m free travel scheme in Leeds is helping young jobseekers. More than 800 young people are being offered free weekly bus travel cards to help them get to college and work experience placements as part of the Head Start programme.

ON SEPTEMBER 1, Eastleighn based Xelabus began operating a new route X5 service between Southampton Airport Parkway and Chandlers Ford Business parks. The service runs every 15 minutes in the rush hour and 30 minutes during the day Monday to Friday. It is being supported by the My Journey Project and Eastleigh Borough Council in order to help improve non-car access to the Chandlers Ford business areas. Employees at many of the businesses in Chandlers Ford

The scheme, which is run by Leeds City Council, gives young people aged between 18 and 24 the chance to take up training and placements with local employers as they look for jobs. Those claiming jobseekers allowance for six months are eligible to take part in the programme. Overall user satisfaction has doubled since the opening of Rochdale’s new interchange, according to an independent survey of passengers. A survey of over 200 interchange users carried out in May 2014, six months after the opening of the new facility, found that 98% of those asked were satisfied overall with the facilities. A corresponding survey carried out in March 2013 had found that just 48% of those

qualify for free travel on this service. A spokesman said: “This service represents a major investment on the part of Xelabus, HCC/ Local Sustainable Transport Fund and Eastleigh Borough Council, in response to requests for such a link from major employers in Chandlers Ford dating back a decade or more. “If successful, the new route has the potential to help reduce parking and traffic problems in the vicinity of the Chandlers Ford business park by providing a link to rail stations for onward travel,

asked were satisfied overall with the facilities at the old interchange. However, the surveys did identify areas that need improvement, with 6% of those asked dissatisfied with the toilet facilities, 5% dissatisfied about cycle parking facilities and 4% dissatisfied with the range of cafes, shops and newsagents. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is currently working with Rochdale Council to improve cycling parking facilities at the interchange while a coffee shop is also due to open this autumn. Both surveys interviewed over 200 people from a mixture of backgrounds over a one week period. The purpose was to establish the importance of different facilities to passengers and monitor opinions of the

facilities ‘before’ and ‘after’ completion of work. Chairman of the TfGM Committee, Cllr Andrew Fender, said: “The surveys provide a snapshot of public opinion before and after construction and we are delighted that the latest results show high levels of customer satisfaction with the new facility. “Not only does Rochdale Interchange provide transport users with better links between rail, bus and Metrolink services as well as improved passenger facilities, accessibility, information, safety and security, but it also provides a fantastic, modern gateway for the town centre. “We will continue to work with bus operators to improve the services we offer and encourage more people to use the facility.” Go North East is improving its ‘Venture’ services in Consett to improve access to the town’s Hermiston retail park from Monday, September 1. Services V3 and V4 from Shotley Bridge to Consett are being revised to provide a direct link to the Morrisons and Tesco stores. Passengers from Delves Lane can travel to Hermiston Retail Park using an hourly through bus on services V1 and V2. Stephen King, Marketing and Sales Manager for Go North East, said: “We’ve had a lot of requests from our customers to improve our connections to the shops at Hermiston and we’re delighted to be able to deliver what our passengers have asked for. “The new links from Delves Lane and Shotley Bridge will make it easier to for customers with shopping as they won’t need to change buses. Our new buses on the Venture routes have been immensely popular and we’re

A VINTAGE BUS SERVICE in Portsmouth has been cancelled. The City of Portsmouth Preserved Transport Depot normally runs a circular service on the last Sunday of each month between May and September. It runs from the D-Day Museum in Southsea, linking Clarence Pier, The Hard, Eastney Beam House and the Royal Marines Museum in Eastney with the D-Day Museum, but it was cancelled on August 31 because of the museum car park being unavailable and because of road closures for the Wiggle triathlon. A further service will run on September 28, which will be the last service of the year. Fares have increased on Reading Buses’ JetBlack route and mint green 5, 6 and 6a, according to getreading.co.uk. Adults travelling between Newbury bus station and Reading train station in peak time saw a 20p increase to £5 while the return fare remains at £7.50. Solo tickets for under 19s increased by 10p to £2.60 one-way and by 20p to £3.70 return. Off-peak returns on the service went up 20p to £6.50. However, £10 JetBlack group tickets, available for up to four people travelling together, are now valid from 0900hrs weekdays and all day at weekends and Bank Holidays. Reading Buses Marketing and Communications Manager Jake Osman said: “We are trying to make things cheaper for groups of people travelling together. “Even at its peak-time, higher cost of £15 before 0900hrs Mondays to Fridays, this represents tremendous value if three or four people are travelling together.” Passengers using the mint green routes 5, 6 and 6a will see the discounted adult single fares increase by 10p to £1.60 but the £1.20 single fare between Whitley Street and town is unchanged. Some fares on other Reading routes are due to change in early October but the operator said the £1.90 single fare inside the simplyReading urban area will not be changing this year.

NEW BUS SERVICES are to be launched in Blagdon, the Bristol Post reported. The new services, launched with funding from North Somerset Council, will start on September 4 and 5. The 128, 134 and 135, are being run by operator Citistar and will pick up in Bishop Sutton, West Harptree, Compton Martin and Blagdon before continuing on to Congresbury, Yatton, Clevedon and Nailsea each Thursday. A new service 135 will also run each Friday to take people to Weston-super-Mare. North Somerset Council executive member for transport, Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, said: “The introduction of these services significantly increases the journey choices available to Blagdon residents, helping to promote social inclusion in this rural area. We will continue to work with our neighbouring authority to explore opportunities for future connections to Blagdon village.”

SALISBURY’S DERELICT former bus station could be turned into retirement homes, the Salisbury Journal has said. After months of speculation about the future of the Endless Street bus station, which closed in January, Churchill Retirement Living has revealed plans to build 46 retirement properties on the brownfield site. The plans include the construction of one and two bedroom flats solely for people aged 60 or over. City councillor James Robertson said: “I think with all the air pollution it isn’t a good place to have older people, in addition this development is near to all the city nightlife.”

although Ray McNally, Director at King Long UK said both a nine and a 12-metre bus will be on show at the London event, which was due to be held this Wednesday (September 3). Nevertheless, the coaches on display on Friday catered for a variety of different intended roles. Parked alongside the outdoor seating area, at which visitors could enjoy hot sandwiches, was a nine-metre XMQ6900.

“We expect this to be our biggest seller this year because it’s not a van derivative,” explained Ray. “It’s got a coach feel, decent luggage capacity and a price tag of only £134,950. That includes all the add-ons as standard – such as leather seats, power points and air-conditioning. In another example, on our next batch of vehicles, power points will be lush in the wall.” The other vehicle on prominent display was a full-size XMQ6129. Ray continued: “The 12-metre coach was pre-ordered as a 53-seater because it’s going to a grammar school. Ordinarily we would advise operators specify it as a 49-seater. Because it’s higher up, two seats can be itted on top of the WC. While it has been type approved as a 53-seater, it’s tight. It costs £199,950. “While the model remains available under derogation with a Euro 5 Cummins engine, the window is closing. Euro 6 engines will be DAF. On that note, the XMQ6900 will still be available with a Cummins engine – it’s just that Cummins are no longer making larger power units at Euro 6.” Although not carrying branding, Ray said the red XMQ6130C was for Leons of Stafford. “It’s the irst one they have ordered – and Hills of Wolverhampton have ordered one too,” he explained. “The 70-seater school coach has Prime seats in 3+2 coniguration. We’re quite excited because we’ve priced it accordingly – £150,000. “That’s very competitive for a 12-metre coach. If you want extras – such as DDA-compliance and air-conditioning, they are available at an additional cost.” While Ray could not conirm the inal details, he also revealed that one customer was set to

Not to be forgotten was Prospect’s tri-axle coach, which arrived later in the morning after it had been valeted. Asked about the background to the road show, Ray replied: “The reason we’ve put on a road show is each year at the NEC, people are impressed with the look, price and factory bumper to bumper two-year warranty. However, there is always a question on how they drive. This is a prelude to the show. “We’ve got a spare pit and so people can inspect and take our vehicles out for a test drive – all things they cannot do at the show.” Ray was keen to stress: “This will be an annual event.” ■ September 3, 2014 | COACH & BUS WEEK | 17

PROFILE › AIRLINKS AIRPORT SERVICES

Flying high at Gatwick The unusual nature of its work means that National Express-owned Airlinks doesn’t enjoy the same public recognition of some parts of the business, but it’s every bit as customer focused as Andy Izatt inds out

Airlinks operates 13 Mercedes-Benz Citaros that are the newest vehicles in the fleet

T

he National Express Airlinks Airport Services subsidiary at Gatwick Airport has recently had its contract renewed for a third time - no small achievement in a competitive sector where suppliers often change. That success is indicative of a responsive operation that is highly customer focused, but in quite a different way to most National Express businesses. Although the National Express brand is most commonly associated with its coaches, the company has a long history of working with several airports mostly landside, but also airside. They’re key destinations accounting for around a third of 18m annual passenger journeys on the express network, and the airports themselves are keen to promote arrival and departure by coach as part of strategies to reduce car dependency. National Express Business Solutions Director Danny Elford has been charged with exploring the opportunities.

Gatwick lexibility

Most of Airlinks’ Gatwick operation is airside although that’s not unique within National 18 | COACH & BUS WEEK | September 3, 2014 018_020_CBW1153_Profile Airlinks.indd 18

‘Success is indicative of a responsive operation that is highly customer focused, but in quite a different way to most National Express businesses’ Express. There’s also an airside business at Stansted Airport where transport to and from the mid and long stay car parks is additionally provided. However, Gatwick is the larger of the two, carrying around 2m passengers annually. While Airlinks provides buses to and from staff car parks landside, airside it’s the preferred supplier for moving people. As part of its agreement with the airport, airlines must use it for passenger transfer although the movement of wheelchair-bound passengers is contracted separately to OCS Group. Transfers are organised either directly or through ground handling agents. Although Airlines are free to use alternative suppliers for crew transfer, the majority – more than 90% – use Airlinks for that as well. While Airlinks has no direct relationship with the people it transports, the requirements of the airlines are demanding. They don’t

normally want to load or unload passengers ‘off pier’ and have to pay for the transfers, being then reimbursed by the airport. Payment is determined by the number of people carried, not the quantity of vehicles supplied, so Airlinks has to resource requirements carefully. Passengers don’t choose to be transferred by bus. If they have a complaint, the irst place they will take it is the airline so the speed and lexibility with which Airlinks responds is critical. Longest journey to an aircraft is six minutes or 12 minutes there and back, There are service level agreements in place covering response time that need to be adhered to and the work by its very nature can be very unpredictable. Time of year, different days, and time of day all bring changes to airline schedules, and then there’s the weather to contend with - a major factor. All can determine whether an aircraft www.coachandbusweek.com

A dedicated bus station airside at Gatwick Airport is from where flight crews are transported to their aircraft. It can be a busy location.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Airlinks

Airlinks team members: Interim Operations Manager Keith Dunster, Administrator Jill Dunster, Duty Manager Karen Portrus and Driver Mary Alderton is parked on or off pier when it lands. Because remote stands are cheaper, they do however appeal to some of the ‘no frills’ carriers. For Airlinks, scheduling requirements are continually changing. Schedulers work in pairs and rotate on 12-hour shifts. Past experience often gives the team insight on what to expect. Staff and vehicles are allocated accordingly, but there are no guarantees. Having them strategically positioned is important. Once allocated for a shift, they tend to stay local to a particular terminal, but being able to respond quickly is everything.

One family

Of Airlinks 80 staff, 70 are drivers. Quite apart from having security clearance to work airside, it’s an airport requirement that the latter have PCV licences. All have completed their Driver CPC. In fact the rules of the road airside are essentially the same as landside. The speed limit is normally 20mph although there are places such as ‘Arrivals’ where it’s down to 10mph. It’s 5mph around an aircraft stand. Aircraft always have right of way. While Airlinks operates just three types of

www.coachandbusweek.com

vehicle, they couldn’t be more different. There are 13 Mercedes-Benz Citaros that date from 2010, seven East Lancs Myllennium-bodied liquid petroleum gas-fuelled DAF SB220s (survivors of a batch of 17) and 12 Cobus 2700s. The airport does have an age limit for vehicles operating airside, but it doesn’t apply to ‘specialised equipment’ such as the gas-fuelled buses and Cobuses. The Cobus 2700 is a purpose-built airport apron transfer vehicle. Half of those operated were inherited along with other vehicles from British Airways erstwhile airside operation at the airport. Despite their size (they’re 10 feet wide), they wouldn’t normally be loaded with more than 75 people – 10 more than one of the Citaros. The gas buses were originally procured as part of an initiative in conjunction with then airport owner BAA to reduce ground emissions. While four were used landside on Flightlink car park shuttle work, the remainder operated airside. National Express subsidiary Airlinks Airport Services can trace its origins back to the Airlink helicopter shuttle service that was operated between Gatwick and Heathrow by British Caledonian Airways and British Airways Helicopters from 1978 to 1986. National Bus Company subsidiary London Country competed against Airlink with a Green Line coach service using the M25 and M23 motorways. It was branded Speedlink, although the first Green Line route between the two airports was introduced as long ago as 1967. What had become London Country South West was sold to the Drawline Group in 1988. The following year the airport operations at Crawley and Staines were split off to become Speedlink Airport Services, which was acquired by National Express in 1991. National Express Group was floated on the London Stock Exchange in December 1992. AirLinks, The Airport Coach Company was created in 1999 when National Express merged Speedlink Airport Services with Flightlink, acquired from Birmingham-based Flights Coach Travel in 1996. Acquisitions quickly followed growing the business. Ground handling company Silverwing was first in July 1999, Blazefield’s Cambridge Coach Services following three months later, London United‘s Airbus operation during February 2000 and Status Group’s Capital Logistics in April 2000. Restructuring since saw the division of AirLinks, but the former Capital Logistics business at Gatwick continues to trade as Airlinks Airport Services.

PROFILE › AIRLINKS AIRPORT SERVICES ABOUT GATWICK AIRPORT Gatwick Airport is 30 miles south of central London. It’s the capital’s second-largest international airport and the second-busiest in the UK after Heathrow. The single-use runway with a maximum of 55 aircraft movements an hour is the world’s busiest. There are two terminals, North and South, used by 36m passengers in 2013 to access a mix of ‘full service’, ‘no frills’ and ‘charter’ flights. BAA Ltd and its predecessors owned and operated Gatwick from 1966 to 2009 when it was sold to a consortium led by Global Infrastructure Partners, which also has a controlling interest in London City and Edinburgh Airports. Capacity at the airport has been progressively increased over the years with extensions to the runway and improved passenger facilities. The second terminal, the North Terminal, was opened in 1988 with a second aircraft pier added in 1991. Pier 6 opened in 2005, added an additional 11 pier-served aircraft stands and is linked to the North Terminal by what is reportedly the largest air passenger bridge in the world. Both terminal buildings have been extended and enhanced over the years. March 2013 marked the opening of the airport’s first pier-served stand for the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, which can carry 525 to 853 passengers depending on configuration.

Manager. Wife Jill is Administrator and both have worked at the airport for several decades – Keith for 24 years, Jill for 17. Keith emphasised the ‘one family’ community spirit amongst workers at Gatwick, and at Airlinks in particular. Staff retention is helped by drivers not having to contend with the public, ticket machines, baggage and urban trafic. Turnover is minimal and most are long-term employees, relected by an average age of 58. One, Terry Marshall, has put in 33 years service. An airport is a 24-hour operation so shift work is the norm. Day and night rotas staggered throughout a 24-hour period include ‘Instructions’ where staff wait to be advised on requirements on an ad hoc basis. Landside there are day and night rotas for the staff car park shuttles. Drivers work a straight ive days and then have three days rest, but little is predictable about what they do. As Keith pointed out: “Tomorrow is a completely new day.” Danny emphasised that Airlinks success at Gatwick was down to partnership working with the airport. “We have a fantastic team here delivering people between plane and terminal with the minimum of fuss,” he said. “They put in

FLEET UPDATE › MAYNES OF BUCKIE

Upgrade

the Mayne way

Gareth Evans reports on the investment made in the fleet of renowed Scottish coach operator Maynes of Buckie

M

aynes of Buckie is something of a household name in the coach industry. While it may be based in the far north of Scotland, it’s coaches are no strangers ‘down south’ – and by that, I don’t mean the Central Belt either. The smart, well-maintained silver-base liveried frontline coaches can be seen on tour across the UK, as well as Continental Europe. Indeed, it’s no secret that Kevin Mayne, who is a director alongside his brother David and father Gordon, has a ‘thing’ for keeping the alloy wheels sparkling. “There is no point investing huge amounts of money on new coaches if the presentation levels are not 200%. The coaches and our first class driving team are not only an asset to Maynes but the industry as a whole,” enthused the ever-modest Kevin. “Our drivers are the ambassadors of our company and the coaches are a mobile advert which attract comments and work – as well as turning many a head around Europe.” Kevin is a real character, something which is all too apparent both at industry events and on coach social media sites, where he is an active contributor. He’s also not averse to getting behind the wheel and thus his experiences are invaluable to helping drive the family firm forward. On that note, it is worth mentioning that Kevin has delivered all the firm’s training since 1993. Maynes’ Driver CPC courses are designed by the Guild of British Coach Operators, of which Maynes is still the only Scottish member. With nine new full-size coaches and three minicoaches having entered the fleet this year – and further vehicles on order, CBW felt it was time to catch up with this respected operator.

FLEET UPDATE › MAYNES OF BUCKIE INSIGHT

About Maynes Coaches Maynes Coaches was established by James Mayne in 1947 following two years operating a local taxi, car and limousine hire business. For prestige occasions the fleet included a Rolls Royce. Having found there was sufficient local demand to justify expanding into the coach business, the inaugural coach was purchased in 1947. The 29-seater Duple-bodied Bedford OB was acquired from Nobles Tours of Aberdeen. 1972 was a milestone and turning point for the company when the first new fullsize coach was purchased. Delivered in the spring of 1972, ‘MSE10K’ was a 45-seater Plaxton-bodied Bedford, which was acquired for the first overseas private hire which took pupils from Buckie High School to Belgium. Although second-hand vehicles continued to be purchased, it became policy to acquire at least one new coach every year. Bodywork by both Plaxton and Duple was the order of the

day for both new and used coaches – although second-hand Caetano and Van Hool-bodied Bedfords were acquired in 1976 and 1985. 1982 however saw the current proprietor, Gordon Mayne, thrown in at the deep end following the sudden death of his father. He continued with the policy of regularly buying new vehicles to match customer demands and over the next few years expanded the fleet even further. New coaches continued to be Bedfords, the majority of which were fitted with Plaxton coachwork. New smaller-sized vehicles were also to a higher specification, fitted with luxury coach seats rather than the standard minibus-type seats. Traditionally a number of second-hand coaches were acquired during the spring to cover the extra summer workload of tours and outings. Whilst most of these acquisitions would receive the standard blue and white livery some would operate in their previous owner’s colour schemes before being resold at the end of the season. Today the firm operates from depots in Buckie, Elgin and Orkney.

Four Van Hool TX15s have joined the fleet this season – one of which was ordered separately to the three announced earlier in the year. The coaches have been built by Van Hool to Maynes’ exacting executive specification – complete with 49 seats, full air-conditioning, WC, hot and cold drinks facilities and an onboard entertainment system. The new coaches have been acquired for touring and private hire, undertaking a mixed workload throughout the UK and Europe. Maynes has also taken the plunge by acquiring its first Chinese-made coaches – from Coventrybased dealer King Long UK. Bought for school contract and private hire work is an XMQ 6120C with 68+1 moquette seats. The Disability Discrimination Actcompliant coach is fitted with centre double doors, three-point seat belts, tinted glazing and and an in-coach entertainment system. 24 | COACH & BUS WEEK | September 3, 2014 022_026_CBW1153_Fleet Update.indd 24

CASE STUDY

Livery competition Earlier this year Maynes ran a coach livery competition, which was open to all primary 7 classes (the Scottish equivalent of year 6 or those aged 10 to 11) in all schools in Moray. Kevin took up the story: “We asked classes from the schools to design and send us ideas of what our company’s coach livery could be like in the future. As a family business we know that primary 7 is such an important and exciting year. The winning entry was chosen from Cluny Primary in Buckie. “The entry by Reece Jappy was selected in the highly contested competition as the worthy winner by our judges. Reece’s entry was very intricate with flags and also kept a twist of our company livery through it.

The winning entry in the livery competition – a prime example of how Maynes engages with the communities it serves “Reece’s class were awarded free coach hire for their whole class – for a maximum of 50 miles in a 30-mile radius of the school between 0930 and 1430hrs.” Kevin concluded: “We were delighted with the results. There were some fantastic entries this year – and we enjoyed doing it. It’s also an excellent way of engaging with our local schools.”

Minicoaches

Another new supplier to grace Maynes’ fleet is EVM – which has provided a nine-seater Mercedes-Benz. Registered ‘GM14YNE,’ it is rightly described as a ‘VIP minicoach.’ “This is the first vehicle our company has purchased from EVM,” enthused Kevin. “The new Mercedes has been finished to a bespoke standard with two-tone leather airline seats, glass roof and an on-board entertainment system.” Asked why such a high-specification had been selected for a small vehicle, he responded: “This was specifically chosen to assist us in our corporate clients’ travel needs. For decades we have been the chosen travel provider for many of the world’s best-known whisky names. We have been continually tasked with ensuring customers, team members and future clients of the whisky industry travel in exceptional

For completeness, it was felt prudent to include a brief look at the remainder of the Maynes fleet – all of which carries cherished registration numbers. First and foremost are seven Neoplan Tourliners, ranging in age from 2011 to 2013 and comprising both 49 and 53-seaters. Together with the Van Hool TXs, these vehicles form the basis of the full-size, frontline executive coach fleet. Looking ahead to the near future, the number of Neoplans will reduce to five in December, with two 2011 examples being replaced by two Van Hool TX16s. There are also four Marcopolo-bodied MANs – two of which are 70-seaters dedicated to schools work – with the remainder being 57-seaters and available for standard private hire. Not to be forgotten is a comparatively rare 2011-registered 57-seater Hispano-bodied standards of comfort and service.” A pair of Plaxton Cheetah-bodied MercedesBenz minicoaches have also joined the fleet. There are now five of what Kevin described as a “very popular type of coach.” Both vehicles have again been built to Maynes’ own specification. While both coaches are equipped with three-point belts, air-conditioning and in-coach entertainment, they differ in that one has 25 leather seats and tables and the other is a straight 29-seater. The coaches are used on private hire, which includes undertaking transfers for corporate clients.

More Van Hools for 2015

Following on from the firm’s earlier 2014 order for four DAF Van Hool TXs, Maynes has placed an order for a further two 53-seater variants. “Thanks to our continued excellent customer and driver feedback, we are again pleased

There are currently seven Neoplan Tourliners in the fleet Iveco EuroRider. Along with the Marcopolos, this coach enjoyed a refresh in time for the new season. Smaller vehicles include a 27-seater BMC Midilux and VIP-specification 2013 MB Vega GT 16-seater. The latter has recently replaced a 2009-registered Tawe Renault 16-seater. order DAF-powered TX16 coaches for our 2015 season with Arriva Bus and Coach,” explained Kevin. “These coaches will blend into our touring and private hire fleet undertaking a mixed workload throughout the UK and Europe. We already have seven Van Hool TX coaches in our fleet and the additions were a logical step to continue the Maynes-Van Hool connection. “This total investment of around £550k allows us to continue to keep our fleet age profile to be one of the youngest in the UK. “The directors will make a trip to finalise the finishing details of the new coaches to the bespoke requirements of the company.” Kevin hinted that further exciting news may well be forthcoming in the weeks ahead: “More fleet upgrades may be finalised in the coming months at Euro Bus Expo that will see some additional coaches arriving for early 2015.” ■ www.coachandbusweek.com

A digital future As more and more passenger cars are coming preequipped with DAB radio, Nik Dix, a key figure in product development from Connects2, talks to James Day about how it’s time for the commercial vehicle sector to adapt

D

AB, or Digital Audio Broadcasting, has long been foreshadowed as the innovative future of radio technology since its official launch in Britain in the 1990s. It was clearly a good idea, but at the time it had very little infrastructure available through which to support it. From then until now, progress has been slow but steady, with talk of a switchover from traditional FM growing in favour year on year. In 2014, the push for digital has gathered momentum and thousands of people are taking advantage of the sound quality, station choice and improved informational capacity of DAB radio. Nowhere is this more true, though, than in the vehicles on British roads, where a fifth of all radio listening takes place (according to Digital Radio UK). Digital radio use is on the rise. Recent CAP figures show that 55% of new cars registered in Q2 are fitted with DAB radio, with 75% projected by mid-2015. With this quantity of new vehicles equipped with DAB, and aftermarket products working towards futureproofing all older models on the road, a full digital radio switchover is easy to imagine. “Many top manufacturers have already begun to fit DAB into their new cars as standard,” said Nik Dix from car audio specialists, Connects2. “Volkswagen has now joined Jaguar Land Rover, BMW and Mini in offering DAB across its entire range, and this is just the beginning.”

How the business works

Through the years, the range which Connects2 offers its customers has been expanded, crafted and evolved to incorporate new technology and trends to keep products fresh and innovative. Connects2 operates as a developer and global distributor of automotive multimedia products and installation solutions, specialising in delivering working products to fit specific customer needs and vehicle applications not covered by mainstream providers. The company develops many of the products it distributes from scratch, both hardware and software, 28 | COACH & BUS WEEK | September 3, 2014 028_029_CBW1153_Supplier Profile.indd 28

ABOUT

Connects2 Connects2 was established in Britain in 1999, with large aspirations. By 2000, the company had developed a CD-changer interface to meet high market demand, and the product was a resounding success. What began as a business distributing products across the UK has, a decade and a half later, become a worldwide presence with over 100 members of staff, connections in more than 80 countries and a range of products to provide optimum solutions and integration for 95% of the cars currently on the road. meaning it is well practiced in producing new products for vehicles outside of its current product range. Connects2’s network of dealers and distributors covers the whole UK and it operates across the globe, with over 200 distributors in over 80 countries. The firm has developed AutoDAB, a range of digital radio products designed to fit seamlessly into any vehicle currently on the road. Nik explained that the brand was created for a clear purpose: “AutoDAB represents an increasing market demand for new technology in older vehicles. Many people and businesses cannot afford brand new vehicles and with AutoDAB we’re trying to cover all bases. “We specialise in making digital radio available to everyone no matter what they drive, and this applies to the commercial vehicle sector too”. Connects2 offer both the AutoDAB Lite, a universal Digital Radio tuner which works with any FM head unit, and the AutoDAB-GO, an in-car DAB receiver with integrated display and Bluetooth. The former is hidden behind the dashboard and is operated through the included remote control, whilst the latter can be attached to the dash or windscreen and is controlled by

The interior of a high specification Target Travel coach. Could coach entertainment systems benefit from having DAB installed? GRAHAM RICHARDSON the dedicated buttons on the unit. With these products, Connects2 provides solutions for the commercial vehicle market that are easy to install, competitively priced and highly adaptable. At present, the company has very little experience in the coach and bus industry, but with the growth in digital radio and other passenger car-based multimedia technologies, the parallels which can be drawn allow it to work with partners to create answers which work for individual vehicle applications, 12 and 24 volt, both domestic and commercial. Connects2 is uniquely positioned as a UK – based developer and distributor to work with customers from the ground up, so, while it does not currently operate in the coach and bus industry, the capabilities are there for the company to hit the ground running. Connects2 dealer network is always looking to forge close working relationships with individual customers, whether they be owner operators or local companies. Because of its size and reputation, built through dealing with volume vehicle manufacturers directly, the company can also link up with dealerships and manufacturer brands alike.

DAB in passenger vehicles

Connects2 claims DAB digital radio works well in passenger vehicles as long as the system is designed to meet the individual needs of the vehicle, with the construction and installation location of antennas being one of the most important factors. With the Government’s commitment to the adoption of DAB Digital Radio and the resulting investment in transmitter infrastructure, both for the BBC and commercial radio, that continues to take place across the country (circa 95% population coverage aiming for FM equivalency by 2015) coverage continues

DAB Radio provides more choice, better coverage and better quality audio than standard FM. DIGITPEDIA.COM Radio infrastructure has improved dramatically over recent years, making a digital switchover a real possibility. ROY COSTELLO

to improve across the road network too. Driver control of the various systems is no more difficult than the operation of existing entertainment equipment. One possible drawback in passenger vehicles is potential conflict between passengers if not all agree on the choice of station. CBW asked whether it could install a system which passengers can listen do individually – similar to what is frequently seen on airlines. At the moment, DAB digital radio broadcasts can be listened to on one receiver at a time (i.e. the user chooses the content and tunes in as with FM). This provides a great solution to upgrade from existing FM single receiver systems in vehicles to provide a wider choice of content, entertainment and information

EXAMPLE PRODUCTS

invaluable to the driver, and customer alike. As time progresses and 3G/4G infrastructure grows, options to tap into multiple sources of content via the internet become a real possibility, whether by WiFi on board allowing customers to share a connection, or streaming from an on-board source (like a plane’s movie system). Connects2 said most things are possible, it’s just a case of understanding the need and demand for services and providing a working solution in a cost effective way.

The advantages of DAB

So, what can DAB offer coach and bus operators which standard FM radio can’t? In essence, more choice, less interference and easier tuning.

AutoDAB-Go

AutoDAB Lite

The AutoDAB-Go is Connect2’s plug and play solution, which it recommends as a first product to try to see if it fulfils the operator’s requirements (plug and play through existing sound system without modification). AutoDAB-GO Features: DAB station names shown on the DAB receiver display, scrolling text information (DLS), simple plug and play installation, number of channels scanned and stored, windscreen mounting system, power through 12V dual USB charging socket, supplied with amplified in-vehicle DAB digital radio antenna. Bluetooth Features: answer and end phone calls from DAB receiver, pair up to eight phones, phone call audio output through integrated speaker or via aux out to vehicle head unit, integrated microphone, playback music over A2DP Bluetooth.

AutoDAB Lite is a more integrated solution which is still universal. Once again, there is no need to modify existing system specs. AutoDAB Lite Features: DAB station names shown on vehicle display, radio display via RDS, plug and play installation via ISO connector, four selectable FM frequencies, MPEG Audio Layer II audio decoder, digital audio-out option, upgradable software, auto channel search, favourite channel selection, infra-red remote control and eye included, glass mount DAB antenna included. It is worth noting that, in common with many 24 volt applications, a 12 volt power source is required to run these devices. Often this is already present in the vehicle and feeds existing entertainment equipment and accessory sockets, but Connects2 can obviously provide specific 24V – 12V power supplies if required.

The vast array of genre specific stations, both local and national, BBC and commercial, provide a choice that FM cannot deliver, since the FM bandwidth is full already. Misconceptions around reception quality are mostly born from people’s early experiences of DAB when coverage and signal strength were much lower. With far more improved coverage and receivers, the quality of digital radio is now much better. National stations remain on the same frequency on DAB too, so there is no dead spots or need to retune. DAB is designed for broadcast radio transmissions so conforms to the traditional ‘one transmission, many listeners’ model, but the opportunities to communicate useful information to the user far exceed those on FM. Information on station, tracks and news can be ‘scrolled’ on many systems (but can equally be defeated if there are safety concerns about moving text) and the network’s ability to carry far more granular traffic information as time goes on, presents real benefits to the commercial operator. It could be possible to use the device for one-way communication in the future, for example.

Digital radio growth

The latest RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research) figures show that 90% of the UK population listens to the radio every week. The country is, more than ever, a tuned in nation – but times are changing; 51% of listeners are tuning in through a digital medium and Nik explained why the commercial vehicle sector need not be slow to adapt. “For the commercial vehicle sector, acclimatising to digital radio would be highly beneficial for both driver and passenger. DAB presents many more options than traditional FM to keep both parties informed and entertained on the move.” n

Suffolk-based Galloway Travel Group has taken delivery of two new Van Hool Astron T916s. With the distinctive Sapphire Star livery, the two new vehicles will replace two existing coaches. The new coaches feature the Paccar 12.9 litre Euro V power unit and ZF-Astronic gearbox with automatic and manual drive mode. It also includes ‘armchair seating’ with leather head-rests and inserts plus an average 75mm (3”) extra legroom. Keith Meynell, the Managing Director, had always been a DAF operator but previously preferred Bova bodywork. He said: “The i6 we bought has been brilliant, and we’ve had first-class support from Irizar UK. “This model has better kerbside appeal with the public and the coach has been excellent on tyres, offers a lovely ride and, after two years, there’s no sign of any corrosion.” Keith said he’d not been convinced of the durability of the modern, lightweight seats but he’d been proven wrong. “We have cupholders, footrests and magazine nets and not one has broken. I’ve also been watching residual values and they are holding up very well.” This time around, KM Motors went for the same 12.2m, two-axle coach, powered by DAF’s PR265 engine and with a ZF ASTronic auto-shift gearbox, but went for custom seats with leather piping. RENTAL, LEASING & FINANCE

Financing is a means for operators to acquire the funding for vehicles and equipment which would otherwise be out of reach

A helping hand S

This week’s Industry Guide looks at the various rental, leasing and inance options available to operators when the time comes to expand the size of their leets or cover for vehicles which are out of service

32 | COACH & BUS WEEK | September 3, 2014 032_034_CBW1153_Industry Guide.indd 32

ometimes, a leet needs expansion, but the capital just isn’t available for new vehicles. Not only can rental companies and inancial irms help to remedy this, operators also have the beneit of their after service support. Companies in both areas offer plenty of lexibility to suit a variety of needs. With some operators hitting hard times, there may be a need for short term spot hire to cover for a service which has to be suddenly stopped. It often isn’t viable to keep a yard full of spare vehicles to cover for such an event, but bus and coach rental companies can help. The same can be said for

tenders with speciic vehicle requirements, such as low loor only or with a speciic minimum age. If a vehicle is involved in an accident or needs to be taken off the road, rental irms can help plug the gap by providing a similar vehicle which doesn’t risk violating the contract. Financing can also help operators to populate their premises with garage equipment, IT facilities and other machinery like bus washes, to help them run a more effective operation. All of this equipment makes a big difference and can dramatically improve the quality and compliance of an operation, but comes at a price. Finance can help. ■ www.coachandbusweek.com

DAVIES CORPORATE FINANCE

Davies Corporate Finance is committed to the coach and bus sectors, giving operators access to the funding facilities they need to ensure the smooth and effective running of their business. Davies Corporate Finance is managed by Director David Davies, who has over 20 years’ experience arranging asset and business finance for coach and bus operators. The company’s current funding panel consists of 40+ finance providers, which enable it to source the most appropriate funder for an operator’s business. Davies Corporate Finance is able to fund both new and used

not to finance – such as garage equipment, IT equipment/ tracking software/hardware, ticketing systems and portable buildings, to list a few. “Now more than ever, operators rely on our financial expertise to introduce them to the most appropriate funders for their business,” said David Davies. “We are still seeing many clients struggle to persuade their bank or other funding institutions to support their business moving forward.” It doesn’t matter how much finance is required, Davies Corporate Finance has access to sufficient funders who will

RENTAL, LEASING & FINANCE STOKE PARK FINANCE

Stoke Park Finance says there has been much in the financial press recently, and indeed in the adverts of its competitors, commenting on the lack of available finance in the market. However, the firm claims that if operators are finding this, they have the wrong sales rep or finance broker. Stoke Park Finance provides a tailor made, personal service to ensure that the asset finance requirements of customers are met on a ‘one stop’ basis. Since the start of the recession, Stoke Park Finance has been working tirelessly to ensure that its customers finance needs are met. The panel of funders has been made as wide as possible, to accommodate as many different types of businesses as possible, and it has also ensured that it can finance an excellent variety of assets too. While it is predominantly a coach and bus financier, the company is pleased to be able to finance engineering equipment, garage kit, and also softer assets such as IT equipment.

Stoke Park Finance is also known for its work in the specialist car market. As well as a range of assets, Stoke Park Finance has a great variety of finance products, including hire purchase, operating lease and contract hire. Payments are structured to suit cashflow, and VAT deferment and seasonal payments are readily available. A customer’s coach fleet is their best advert on the road. It needs to be kept up to date, within age criteria for contracts, and also with appropriate LEZ restrictions. With Stoke Park Finance, operators can access finance quickly, at competitive rates, and with minimal disruption to their business. The company prides itself on straight forward finance solutions with no hidden extras. As a family owned and run business, it treats its customers’ businesses as though they are its own. THE BIG PICTURE

036_037_CBW1153_Big Picture.indd 37

First Wessex introduced six new Wrightbus StreetLites in Weymouth last December – one of which is pictured here. Fleet no.47407, registered ‘SK63KLJ’ is seen heading along the seafront. As indicated by its external route branding, the bus is dedicated to service 2, which links the town centre with Littlemoor, via Broadway on a 10-minute frequency. This attractive scene, which is framed by the United States World War 2 memorial, the well kept flower bed – and even sand which has blown off the beach – was caught on camera by Chris Newton on August 12.

OPEN PLATFORM › GORDON MARSDEN MP

Shared journey to a more accessible bus network Shadow Transport Minister Gordon Marsden MP argues that Governement should not dither over the implementation of audiovisual technology on buses – and that partnership working is required to deliver equality of treatment and good quality access Good quality access to bus and coach services for people is not just an optional objective, it should relect equality of rights and treatment. For passengers with disabilities or conditions that make public transport more challenging, buses should be a crucial lifeline to broadening their options and avoiding being isolated. For bus operators then, the challenge is how to help their passengers achieve this, to fulil their social responsibilities on access and in doing so, beneit from expanded bus usage and revenue. There are mechanisms now to help operators and their staff achieve this, but too often DfT Ministers seem to be sideline spectators on how to take things forward. Missing the right stop can leave blind and partially sighted passengers stranded dangerously in an unfamiliar area. This is why Leonard Cheshire, Whizz Kidz, Guide Dogs, RNIB and others have long called for the expansion of Audio-Visual (AV) systems on buses, and they are right to do so. AV systems don’t just help people with disabilities – they beneit every passenger, especially visitors and newcomers to bus travel. They’ve proved universally popular since they were rolled out across London’s bus leet, and some operators who have installed the systems have reported a rise in revenues as passengers come back to the bus. Leading passenger transport consultancy the TAS Partnership said a system might cost around £2,500 on a new double-decker, less than 1% of the total cost. Failing to act on expanding AV brings its own costs in terms of lessened bus usage, personal mobility and economic activity. But Government ministers continue to dither, instead of acting on ensuring AV systems get rolled out nationally, ignoring the pleas of Parliament’s all-party Transport Select Committee and bus users and disability groups and organisations. The idea loated that mobile phone apps could be a cheaper all-in solution for disabled people does nothing for those who do not have access to a smartphone, or live in areas where signal is intermittent, or whose disability prevents them using an app. I’m sorry to say that the Government’s latest wheeze – to set up a competition for young people over several months to design a cheaper alternative to AV systems, with Dragon’s Den-type inals and just maybe persuading an operator to scale-up the winning entry – will do little to enthuse users and organisations convinced AV is the way forward. Indeed, it runs 18 | COACH & BUS WEEK | September 3, 2014 038_CBW1153_Open Platform.indd 18

Gordon is an enthusiastic support of initiatives like that run by the Blackpool Transport Passenger User Panel, which bring together drivers and disabled users to share experiences. A Blackpool Transport East Lancs-bodied Trident is seen on the North Shore working service 1 to Fleetwood the risk of being regarded as ministers opting out when what they should be doing is making the business case for AV and incentivising operators to deliver it. Disabled bus users have also said loud and clearly that driver training needs underpinning with proper monitoring and the backstop of a requirement in law if needed. The majority of drivers are conscientious, and we are told around four ifths of drivers have received some form of training in disability awareness. However, quantity does not always guarantee quality. 82% of disabled people in a Guide Dogs survey this March said their experience with bus drivers had failed to improve or got worse in the last year. In response, the Government has dithered, hoping the voluntary approach will solve everything and blocking a framework to boost compliance. Having promised a proper review this March of the ive-year opt-out they had previously demanded from an EU requirement for operators to train all drivers, ministers again rowed back – and indeed, appeared to contradict each other. Repeated questions by myself and others have left us little the wiser except there is now a sort of review of the review. This isn’t the way to do things – we should give operators clarity ensuring that every UK bus and coach driver gets quality and recurring training. We must always remain alive to the implications of other changes on disabled people. Smart ticketing brings many beneits but campaigners have warned me that this must not be at the expense of disabled people receiving the necessary support from ticketing staff, and I agree. Cooperation and agreement driven by active government that brings all parties together must, I believe, be the key concept to improve UK

buses. Ministers need to speed up cooperation between bus operators, users and transport groups to agree standards nationally. Locally, I am President of Rideability, a Blackpool charity which now is working with the council to provide tailored door-to-door transport for disabled people. Rideability has shown the value of a cooperative approach, in this case between local authorities, bus user groups and the charitable sector. The same cooperation can work with the private sector too. I’m also delighted by the success of initiatives like that run by the Blackpool Transport Passenger User Panel. Its Chairman Stephen Brookes has told me how their sessions, which like those run by the RNIB bring together drivers and disabled users to share experiences of the journey, have proved a step-change. Drivers become more aware of the challenges that face disabled people, but users also appreciate more the practical dificulties drivers face, like hearing through the door of the cab. In a future where more of DfT’s budget will be locally determined, Government needs to be a game-changer to ensure that bus operators, users, local authorities and increasingly Local Enterprise Partnerships are focused on delivering equality of treatment and good quality access. The beneits, not just of social inclusion but of new economic opportunities thereby generated, should not be underestimated. Gordon has been Labour MP for Blackpool South since 1997 and Shadow Minister for Transport, including the public transport portfolio, since October 2013. Bank Holiday Monday: It is officially a rest day, although I tap away on CBW. Tuesday: Press day runs like clockwork. Frustratingly, I have one of those nights where I don’t sleep. Even my usual strategy of driving old bus routes in my head doesn’t work. Wednesday: Doing my walk round check, I feel it’s finally time to have two new tyres on my car, so drop it off at the garage and work on CBW remotely, before heading into the office. Thursday: Spend an enjoyable morning with Eastons Coaches on the northern edge of Norwich for an ‘Operator Profile.’ Surrounded by woodland, it’s reminiscent of Germany – while the narrow, twisty roads remind me of ‘back home’ in the Shropshire-Welsh borderland. Indeed, I suffer a bout of ‘hiraeth,’ as we say in Welsh – homesickness if you like. I feel shattered in the evening – Tuesday night is catching up with me. Friday: Rise early, tap away on CBW, before heading to Coventry to cover King Long’s road show. Watching the clock, pop over to enjoy a long overdue catchup with the crew at Volvo on the other side of town – it having been just over a year since my last visit to the dealership. Dart back to the office and write up my King Long report. I’m tired and very much up against the clock but my whacky self rarely fails to engage in a spot of friendly office banter. After all, if I’m chirpy, I’m productive – and the same goes for others.

First Aberdeen sows the seeds Hot on the heels of last week’s launch of 26 new Wrightbus StreeLite Micro-Hybrids (CBW1152), First Aberdeen is attempting to grow ridership – by handing out seeds to members of the public. Drivers on the re-branded Sunshine Service 23 and Thistle Service 3 have been distributing free packets of sunflower and thistle seeds to their passengers. Marketing Assistant at First Aberdeen, Rachael Gordon, said: “In total 2,000 packets of seeds will be handed out over the next couple of weeks. Like the new buses, the seeds have so far been well received by passengers. We thought encouraging our customers to grow thistles and sunflowers would be a nice touch.” In the CBW office, we couldn’t help but conclude that First’s real intention to assist members of the travelling public to get the new buses to grow on them – although with sunflowers, that may turn out to be a tall order. One thing’s for sure, it’s not a seedy gesture – well not that seedy at any

rate... We also know that far from being a prickly subject, the friendly crew at First

Aberdeen enjoy a spot of friendly banter. All good fun.

A model appeal from Reading Buses Hobbyists will know the feeling… Enthusiastically starting work on a model and for whatever reason then giving it up. Reading Buses’ charity of the year Launchpad is appealing for part-made model kits for its clients. The model kits, whether aeroplanes, buses, trains or buildings will come in handy for their clients to make in their craft workshop. Launchpad says it is a great form of escapism for these people to be able to concentrate and build, or achieve, something. “We have invited our staff to consider the Launchpad appeal,” said Jake Osman, Reading Buses’ Marketing and Communications Manager. “We are informed by Launchpad that model kits really do provide invaluable life skills for their clients to move forward. “We also invite our passengers to consider giving Reading Buses unused or unmade model kits which we will then pass on to Launchpad.” Jake added: “The charity is also appealing for CDs which people may be looking to clear out. Anyone with CDs or model kits can leave them on our reception at Great Knollys Street depot.”

Bill Woodward retires from role at Stagecoach North East Stagecoach North East is bidding farewell to Bill Woodward, a much loved and respected bus manager, who has announced his retirement after almost 42 years service within the transport industry. Bill, 61, Service Development Manager from Sunderland, has been with the company for 35 years, but has dedicated himself to the bus industry for over four decades, working at both the Sunderland and Teesside depots in that time. Bill began his career in 1972 as a junior traffic clerk with Sunderland Corporation Transport, which eventually became part of Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive. From there, Bill took up the role of schedules clerk before moving to Teesside in 1979 with Cleveland Transit as a senior schedules officer. After serving 22 years with Cleveland Transit, which became Stagecoach North East in 1995, and working his way up the career ladder, Bill returned back to his home of Sunderland as Service Development Manager, where he has served the team for the past 13 years. During that time, Bill has led on a number of senior projects, including the implementation of a high tech computer software system for the bus scheduling and service planning process, which now ensures the smooth running of the buses across the region. Bill has also served his time on the bus

as well as off it, working as a driver during the 1990s on evenings and weekends. The popular manager was presented with a series of gifts from his colleagues, which included a book and DVD on railways, a voucher for the Wensleydale Vintage Rail Experience and a model vintage bus. Bill said: “My job has been very rewarding and I am most proud of what my team has achieved. The interaction with people has been brilliant and is what I will miss the most, as there has been tremendous support from the staff. Stagecoach has been an excellent place to work and has afforded me a challenging and fulfilling career. “Throughout the years there have been some big changes to the industry and some amazing challenges for me in my career. When I started there were still conductors on buses and much less

Bill Woodward, with staff at Stagecoach North East’s Sunderland depot traffic. We have moved a long way in terms of technology, which has helped with the overall operation of a bus company and, which has been necessary with the increased traffic and development of the road

network in recent times. “I would very much like to thank all of my colleagues for their help and support during my various roles at the company over the years. This industry is all about people and I have developed friendships that go back over 36 years. It is such a good team and I have been well looked after.” Robin Knight, Commercial Director, Stagecoach North East, said: “It has been my pleasure to work with Bill over the past 36 years and he is very much respected by his colleagues and peers for the sheer amount of knowledge he has brought to the role. He has given so much and will be very much missed by all. We wish him every success for a long and happy retirement.”
