trikes are horrible. They lead to division and conflict in the workplace, which is never desirable. The wounds take a long time to heal. As this issue went to press on Monday, 18 of Transport for London (TfL) contracted bus operators had contingency plans in place to deal with their staff, who are members of the Unite union, walking out. Why? According to Unite: “In contrast to tube drivers, there isn’t one collective pay deal for bus drivers in the capital, whose pay is negotiated on a company by company basis leading to pay inequality and disparities. There are over 80 different pay rates for those doing the same job, even driving the same route.” From the union’s perspective, collective bargaining becomes a powerful leverage tool – but it can restrict an operator’s capacity to tender competitively. Speaking to operator friends who are in management with the capital’s operators, the consensus was: ‘I can see where they’re coming from, but they need a reality check.’ On the face of it, it sounds ridiculous to have such a huge variation in Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) but a large part of it is down to TUPE (Transfer
of Undertakings [Protection of Employment] regulations) – something that is notably absent from the union’s publicity. If an operator wins a route tender, dedicated drivers can TUPE across, meaning their T&Cs cannot be changed without their agreement. If those T&Cs don’t match that operator’s standard set, there is instant disparity, which can lead to division amongst staff and causes headaches for employers. From a driver’s point of view, Potters Bar is a nice depot, a good area to live in, with cheaper housing – and a nicer area to work in. By contrast, in Holloway, housing is dearer but its a more deprived inner-city area to live in – and it involves driving in central London, dodging kamikaze cyclists. In short, recruiting is easier in the suburbs than in inner cities. Under Unite’s plan, it would seem employers would not be able to offer additional incentives to help them find new staff where it is hard to recruit. While it will not be an easy ride, reforming TUPE for bus drivers should be a goal for the unions and operators alike. Until that is done, things will only get worse.

No one at Battersby Silver Grey was available for comment. l THE RESULT of Cornwall Busways’ Public Inquiry which was held before Traffic Commissioner Nick Jones on Wednesday (January 7), is to be made via a written decision – according to the Office of the Traffic Commissioner. As reported in last week’s issue, the independent operator ceased trading on December 31. l ARRIVA is giving away the chance to travel for free throughout 2015 for one lucky bus user. By buying a four weekly ticket online, travellers can save 10% off the standard cost, until January 31. Travellers can, however, purchase up to three months of four weekly tickets in advance, and for every ticket they purchase, they will earn an entry into the prize draw.

The IRTE Skills Challenge 2014 saw over 60 technicians and apprentices from operators including Arriva, Tower Transit, First Group and Metroline compete. Last year also marked the DVSA’s association with the Challenge for the first time, with the organisation sponsoring awards for Top Scoring DVSA Inspection Apprentice and Top Scoring DVSA Inspection Technician. Alastair Peoples, Chief Executive of DVSA, said: “We’re proud to be supporting the IRTE Skills Challenge to identify and reward the industry’s best coach and bus technicians and highlight the importance of vehicle safety and reliability.”
Sponsored by Allison Transmission, Bridgestone, KnorrBremse and Shell, technicians who take part in the IRTE Skills Challenge will have the chance to measure their skills against those from other operators, gain recognition for their expertise, and win prizes from Teng Tools, as well as a year’s free membership of IRTE for the top team. Bus and coach operators are invited to enter teams of three technicians/apprentices by March 27, and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in July. CT Plus wins Guernsey contract CT Plus has been named as the preferred company to run Guernsey’s scheduled bus service, the BBC has reported. The Environment Department said the contract has not yet been signed, but it will result in the States buying a new fleet of buses over a number of years. No details had been released about how the States intends to pay for a bus depot when CBW went to press. CT Plus already runs the island’s scheduled bus service and claims
Optare buses on board stranded cargo ship
Optare has confirmed that 10 of its single-decker buses bound for a customer in the Middle East are on board the stranded Hoegh Osaka cargo ship. The captain and the master of the Hoegh Osaka took the decision to deliberately ground the vessel in the Solent on January 3, after it began to list once it had left Southampton. A salvage operation is under way but was being disrupted by bad weather conditions as CBW went to press. A statement from Optare said it was too early to determine the status of the cargo on board, Hoegh Autoliners are in touch with Optare and are sending updates as and when they become available to them. Optare said it is working closely with its customer to try and reduce the impact of the delayed delivery of the vehicles bound for the Middle East.

the new contract will see a number of improvements. Dai Powell, CEO of parent company HCT Group, claimed there would be better online information, including real-time data through an App. He also said the new terms will see improvements to the service itself and there will be increased training for staff. “We are still in discussions with the States and therefore at this stage we are unable to go into great detail, but we are excited about the possibilities of taking the bus service in Guernsey to the next level,” he said.
Demand eases for bus and coach market in 2014
Overall bus and coach registrations fell 4.6% in 2014 to 7,352 units. December’s 26.1% decline was driven by a drop in purpose-built bus and coach registrations. Whole year demand for purpose-built coaches rose 5.8%, despite a 51.1% drop in registrations in December. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “In spite of the recent growth in the bus and coach market, the sector was unable to overcome the previous months of decline earlier in 2014. “The trend of growth in the purpose-built coach sector was reflected in the 5.8% rise for 2014, compared to the moderate declines seen in other areas of the market.”

Only one applicant met the essential criteria specified in the advert and therefore qualified for interview. The standard selection procedure was followed, including the use of behavioural profiling and a two tier interview process.”

McGill’s had already taken on the work at short notice after Henderson Travel, the previous operator of the services, ceased trading in October 2014. The successful contract win will allow McGill’s to continue providing these services. The Scottish Herald reported that the total cost of the public subsidies needed to operate the routes will be £132,000 per annum, higher than when they were run by the previous operator, Henderson Travel. McGill’s was among five bus companies which submitted bids to SPT to take over the routes permanently. The duration of the contracts range from 17 to 41 months. OBITUARY
Jim Lee
Jim Lee, who had a long career in the Scottish bus industry, has died. He had been suffering from ill health. Jim started his career as a conductor with Central SMT, rising to the role of Inspector and later DTS (District Traffic Superintendent) at the Motherwell (Airbles) depot. At Western SMT he was Assistant to the Traffic Manager then moving to W. Alexander & Sons (Northern) as Traffic Manager. When Clydeside Scottish was formed in 1985 he was appointed Operations Manager, becoming Operations Director at Western Scottish. At Wilson’s Coaches of Carnwath he was General Manager, later becoming Managing Director of Travel Dundee. Jim received an MBE for services to public transport in Scotland in the December 2005 New Year Honours list.
Abellio London provided an ADL Enviro400 Hybrid bus for the New Years’ Day parade in London. This year’s parade is the first time a bus has been involved and marks the end of Transport for London’s Year of the Bus celebrations, which Abellio has been involved with. Jon Batchelor, Operations Manager for Abellio at its Walworth Garage, told CBW: “The Enviro400 was delivered in August for the contract for route 49. The New Year parade is a massive event and getting bigger each year. I’d like to say a big thank you to Battersea engineering for preparing the bus and for all the Abellio staff that turned up on the day to help.”
Timetable announced for new National Express West Midlands vehicle deliveries National Express West Midlands (NXWM) and Centro have announced the timetable for the region’s record £34m investment in new buses, with the first due to arrive next month. On average a new vehicle will be delivered each day between March and August. As reported in CBW1166, the investment includes 171 new buses, including 58 high-specification ‘Platinum’ vehicles. The Platinum vehicles will all be Enviro400s, while the remaining 113 vehicles will be a mixture of single and doubledecker ADL buses.

NXWM confirmed that the first of the new buses would be on the road in March, that July would see the most new vehicles arrive, with 38 buses arriving in a month, and that it will have taken delivery of all 171 buses by September. The Platinum buses will be the last to arrive and are expected to go into operation during the summer. Peter Coates, Managing Director of National Express West Midlands, said: “The new buses arriving over the next few months will ensure hundreds of thousands of our customers will have smoother, cleaner and more enjoyable
journeys. The buses, which are all built in Britain, will have more comfortable seats, better lighting and crystal clear CCTV. “Our customers regularly tell us newer buses make for a better journey and that is why we have invested a record amount in new vehicles.” Centro Chairman, Cllr John McNicholas, said: “The arrival of these new buses is great news for passengers across the West Midlands, offering improved levels of comfort and service.”

Eurotunnel forced to sell cross-Channel ferry operation Second appeal against Competition and Markets Authority decision fails Eurotunnel has put its crossChannel sea operation up for sale after it lost a second appeal against a Competition and Markets Authority ruling to divest its MyFerryLink business. The Competition Appeal Tribunal upheld a decision that the former Ferry Sea France business should stop operating out of Dover within six months. Combined with tunnel trafic, Groupe Eurotunnel had just under half of all cross-channel custom. Eurotunnel has decided not to pursue the case further after the failure of its second appeal. The company is conident of inding a buyer for the ferry operation it started in 2012 after acquiring vessels from SeaFrance, after the French irm went into liquidation. The group said it subcontracted

English Heritage plans Stonehenge parking expansion A planning application to provide more parking spaces and resurface the overlow car park at Stonehenge is to go before Wiltshire Council. English Heritage said the work would create about 25 additional coach parking spaces and ensure higher volumes of visitors can park in wet weather. The move follows complaints about inadequate transport facilities at the site throughout 2014, after a new £27m visitor centre opened. A shuttle bus scheme had struggled to cope
with the volume of visitors who were using it. English Heritage said it is taking steps to address areas of the visitors experience which need improvement. Wiltshire Council’s Ian West said the transport situation at the site has been a ‘disaster,’ and called for an independent audit to be carried out. He said: “You need to have somebody come in and assess what is happening. It’s no good trying to build your way out of problems, and this is what English Heritage is trying to do.”
English Heritage said: “We’ve applied for planning permission to resurface the existing overlow car park so it can be used in all weather conditions and also for permission to provide extra spaces in the coach park. “We await feedback from the council and we will keep everyone updated throughout.” Despite the issues with transport, a record 1.3 million people have visited the monument since the opening of the visitor centre in December 2013.
The world-famous attraction has been criticised after parking facilities were moved further away and a shuttle bus service struggled to cope with visitor volumes. VISITBRITAIN/STEPEHEN SPRAGGON

Jacques Gounon, Chairman and Chief Executive Oficer of Groupe Eurotunnel stated: “MyFerryLink is an operating and commercial success. “We are proud to have succeeded where so many others have failed. Given the position of the British authorities, the future of MyFerryLink will now be determined outside the Group.” Back in May 2014, Alasdair Smith, of the CMA, said: “MyFerryLink is making losses and being funded by Eurotunnel. This is causing the current level of competition on the Dover– Calais route to be unsustainable and is likely to lead to the exit

Steve Mills of Barnsley-based coach operator Yorkshire Rose Holidays passed away on Friday (January 9). Writing on the company’s Facebook page on Saturday, his sons David and James said: “As some of you are aware he’s not been well and he’s has been in hospital since well before Christmas with his heart. “He went to theatre yesterday but sadly didn’t make it. I am totally devastated and it’s still sinking in but, we at Yorkshire Rose have a very close family and are all there for each other. We are unaware of funeral arrangements at the minute but will post when we know what’s happening. “Things at work will run as normal. The office did close early yesterday but is open again this morning. Our trips to London have
gone away this morning on time, as it’s the last thing my dad would have wanted for us to stop every thing after every thing he worked so hard to achieve. “As you know, us at Yorkshire Rose have always tried to plan ahead and I’m sad to say we did make sure that we would be able to carry on if this should have ever have happened. We already have our O-licence which we applied for a few year ago and we now have two full-time family members who are CPC holders, so we can carry on as normal as possible without my dad. “My brother and I are having a few days off to mourn, but apart from that things will run as normal as that is what he would have wanted more than anything.” They concluded: “Yorkshire rose is and is going to stay family-owned, family-run and family-driven.”
A Prospect Coaches driver has received a 15 month suspension from Stroud Magistrates Court for driving without due care and attention. The decision follows a coach crash which injured five adults and a child, as well as the driver himself, who suffered a broken leg. Robert Blakemore’s coach, carrying 53 people, came off the M5 and crashed into a verge in Gloucestershire in August 2014. Witnesses said Mr Blakemore, 60, was driving with his eyes closed and his chin resting on his chest at the time of the crash. He pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention. No mechanical defect was found with the coach and breath tests indicated he had not been drinking alcohol. Mr Blakemore, who is diabetic,
said he ‘did not black out.’ He told the court that he was currently on sick pay and unable to work because of the broken leg he suffered in the accident. He added that losing his licence would mean he would lose his job. As well as the 15 month driving ban, Mr Blakemore was fined £165 and ordered to take an extended test. The coach was operated by Lye, Stourbridge-based Prospect Coaches. It had been taking a group of children from Bright Futures Children’s Centre in Sandwell, West Bromwich to the beach at Weston-super-Mare. The coach was one of four travelling to the Somerset resort on the day. In witness statements, three passengers said Mr Blakemore woke when the coach was drifting towards the hard shoulder and one of the passengers screamed. Stroud Magistrates’ Court heard that the screaming shocked Mr Blakemore who attempted to regain control of the coach, but failed.

NEWS › REGIONAL EAST WORK HAS COMMENCED to revamp King’s Lynn bus station and the area around it – a project which will improve links to the town’s railway station. The Eastern Daily Press reported that the £1.6m revamp has been funded by supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury’s and West Norfolk Council and is designed to reduce the impact of out-of-town superstores by making the town centre easier to get to and more attractive. District councillor Leslie Bambridge welcomed the scheme, which is set to be completed in June. She said: “It’s quite frankly about time. It will be better for everyone. I think a lot needs to be done and the idea behind it is excellent. “I went to meet someone at the bus station and couldn’t sit down as the seats were wet due to the poor design. “The improvements will make it much better.”
NORFOLK GREEN is offering more discounts to customers following on from its inclusion in a Lynn scheme, allowing shoppers visiting Lynn and Hunstanton to save money on bus travel, Lynn News has reported. It joined the Vancouver Quarter discount card scheme in October 2014, offering cardholders a 10% discount on its 10, 11 and Coasthopper 1 buses when heading into Lynn for late-night shopping events before Christmas. The operator announced a Top 10 loyalty scheme which will offer a 10% discount every day for a year on the 10, 11 and Coasthopper 1. It has a £10 annual membership fee, though it is free until February 9. In addition to the discount, members can buy a one-off weekly ticket on the 10 and 11 services for £10, saving up to £19.50 on services.
MIDLANDS
ARRIVA has made changes to a bus service in Tamworth, the Tamworth Herald reported. Since Sunday, January 11, the X65 service from Tamworth to Lichfield has been replaced by the new X60 service – a fast and direct route running every 30 minutes. Dan Flanagan, Arriva’s Local Manager, said: “Introducing service X60 shows we have

be renumbered under the X60 service and will continue across Lichfield; from Tamworth via the A51 and Hopwas. Early morning and evening buses, Monday to Saturday, and Sunday buses will continue to run along the usual route between Cannock and Lichfield as service 60.
BUS SERVICES across Devon could be cut back as the county council attempts to reduce its public transport budget by £1.7m, the Torquay Herald and Express reported. Services most likely to be cut are those used by non-entitled school children, some evening and Sunday services and some town centre services. The savings are necessary to meet the £50m Government funding cuts facing the county next year, the authority says. Cabinet members will consider proposals to thin out services on January 14. Cllr Stuart Hughes said: “We have made efficiencies in previous years to provide the required savings. “But the scope for further efficiencies is very limited. “This aims to preserve bus services across the county but to continue thinning those services and reducing choice in terms of travel time and destination. “It provides a way of reducing our spend on public transport with the least possible impact.” The council is considering capping the subsidy it will pay for bus journeys in Devon that would otherwise have been
NORTH First in Greater Manchester has introduced 16 Wrightbus Streetlite MicroHybrids at an event in Tameside with local Councillor, and Deputy Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Committee, Doreen Dickinson. The new buses introduced earlier this year, each costing £150,000, are fitted with Euro 5 engines which significantly reduce the level of carbon emissions and lower the impact of public transport on the environment. The vehicle interiors feature increased legroom and leather seats. The buses are serving customers on the service 348 (Carrbrook Ashton via Demense Drive) and service 350 (Oldham - Ashton). First has worked with one of the communities on the 348 route, Copley Residents Association, to introduce the buses. Copley Residents Association’s representative said: “We’re pleased that First listened to our community and introduced these quieter and

smaller buses which also improve the journey for bus users. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with First for the benefit of all the community.” Cllr Doreen Dickinson, Elected member of Tameside MBC for Stalybridge South, said: “I welcome First’s vehicle investment providing greener and more comfortable bus services. I’m sure bus users welcome these improvements and
they will encourage more people to travel by bus.” Dave Leonard, Business Manager for First in Tameside, added: “These buses deliver the latest energy saving benefits as well as a great travelling experience for our customers. “We were delighted to work with the local community to introduce these buses with the latest luxury interiors.”

The current public transport budget for 2014/15 is £5.7m, of which £5.3m is used for Devon County Council funded bus services, with the remaining £400,000 for Community Transport support. If the cuts go ahead, it will be the irst time the authority has cut bus services in four years. The council is proposing to increase funding for volunteerrun, community transport providers. A BUS SHELTER recently refurbished by the grounds management team at Weston Town Council cost more than the authority’s total budget for all bus shelters in the area, the Weston Mercury has reported. The grounds service report said: “This work took longer than anticipated due to dificulties with inding specialist bus shelter repair and maintenance companies. “Because of the extent of damage, requiring re-fabrication of some parts of the structure, the overall cost for this one shelter was £1,508.45. “The cost of this has exceeded the total budget for bus shelters.”
NORTH
A NEW BUS SERVICE has been introduced in east Hull, the Hull Daily Mail reported. Residents of Hathersage Road and Lambwath Road launched a campaign after the number 53 Stagecoach service was scrapped at the end of August 2014, following the withdrawal of the council subsidy. In response to concerns from residents, the council worked with EYMS to reroute one of its services along Lambwath Road. The revised timetable for service 50 will operate from March 9 and now takes in Lambwath Road, Sutton Road and Gillshill Road. A council spokesman said: “Following the receipt of a petition from residents of Hathersage Road and Lambwath Road and a meeting with ward members and residents regarding the removal of service 53, it was agreed to reroute the subsidised service 50 to include Lambwath Road. “The revised timetable enables service 50 to operate via Lambwath Road, Sutton Road and Gillshill Road in each direction and will start to operate from

March 9. “We hope this will improve the service for residents in the area.”
FIRST BUS has added a £1 Manchester - East/West Didsbury fare, which was launched on January 11, 2015. The £1 fare follows a series of initiatives to grow customer numbers in the last 12 months. The £1 fare is valid as far as Manchester on services 41/42 as well as service 18 and 157. First also offers an equivalent child fare of 50p. Dave Shurden, Business Manager at First Rusholme added: “The £1 ticket has been really popular and I’m delighted to now add this great value fare into our full ticket range. “Our focus on service quality, new route links and value for money is attracting more and more customers onto First buses. I’m sure the full addition of the £1 fare will encourage even more people to use the bus for work, study and leisure along the whole corridor as well as into the city centre.”

TAXI DRIVERS in Henley have been warned not to park at bus stops, the Henley Standard has reported. The announcement was made after a taxi driver was issued with a parking ticket for using a bus stop in Hart Street which adjoins the taxi rank. Drivers claimed they had a verbal agreement with South Oxfordshire District Council to use the stop but the council has denied this. Mohamed Parvaiz, who chairs the South Oxfordshire Taxi Drivers’ Association, claimed taxi drivers had been told they could park at the stop to wait for passengers after 2100hrs when there are fewer buses operating. He said: “We have used the space for number of years and there has never been an issue. “We did tell the police oficer about the arrangement with the council but she said the council didn’t know anything about it.” Rob Draper, a taxi licensing team leader at the district council, said: “The council has not and cannot grant a licensed vehicle the right to use bus stops as taxi ranks or waiting areas. “The fact that there has been little or no enforcement of the trafic regulations is a matter solely for Thames Valley Police, who are responsible for the enforcement of parking.”

Malta’s new contractor starts work Spanish subsidiary of National Express takes over from the government in Malta MALTA Autobuses Urbanos de León S.A took over governmentowned Malta Public Transport on January 8, following the nationalisation of Arriva Malta. Local news reports suggest that it’s paying €8m for a business that was bought by the government for €1 a year ago. Leased vehicles from the UK are to be introduced to replace those supplied by the Unscheduled Bus Service consortium, Transport Malta CEO, James Piscopo told the Times of Malta newspaper. Malta Public Transport already operates 45 buses leased from Dawsonrentals – a mix of Optare Solo SRs and Wrightbus-bodied Volvo B7RLEs. The UK buses will only be used until Autobuses Urbanos de León S.A’s own vehicles arrive. It has committed to bringing 142 to Malta and an artist’s impression of the new livery suggests that some at least will be Otokar Vectio Cs. No articulated buses or double-deckers are included. An additional 100 drivers may be supplemented by another 200 to meet proposed schedules. Talking about the handover to the new contractor, Transport Minister, Joe Mizzi said: “Everything is going to be exactly the same as it is now. It’s a soft entry. From then onwards, there will be a programme in place
which will gradually roll out the IT and ticketing infrastructure. The orders have already been made.” Autobuses Urbanos de León S.A Director Felipe Cosmen said: “I’m delighted that Transport Malta has chosen us to operate this important and complex contract. We will introduce 30% more capacity into Malta’s network during peak times and provide additional seats.” A court rejected an application for a warrant of prohibitory injunction intended to stop the authorities from entering into any contractual agreements that had been filed by Island Buses Malta. According to Malta Today, the decision given in chambers by Judge Jacqueline Padovani Grima also revoked a
temporary injunction to the same effect, which had been issued by Judge Mark Chetcuti. Lawyers representing Island Buses Malta had argued that Transport Malta had shifted the goalposts, to the detriment of their client, citing a €23m government subsidy to the Spanish operator, which is a subsidiary of National Express-owned ALSA, and the fact that it would be allowed to start off with a partial bus service – contrary to a condition in the expression of interest stipulating that the provider chosen would be obliged to provide full service from the outset. According to Malta Today Judge Grima held that the injunction
was not necessary to protect the rights of the plaintiffs at the stage it was requested because it had the option to challenge the award through a court case. Neither was the potential damage caused to the plaintiff irremediable, as there was still the possibility that the negotiations between Autobuses Urbanos de León S.A and Transport Malta could collapse, which would mean negotiations could then continue with Island Buses. The Judge also held that the prejudice caused to the plaintiff, were its request rejected “did not begin to compare” with that which would be caused to Transport Malta and the government were the process to suddenly stop.
FINLAND Long-distance passengers have more options following the launch by Omnibus of a new route between Helsinki and Vaasa and increases in the frequency on four of its other routes. Competitor Koiviston Auto, in turn, is cutting fares on routes serving 13 cities. Other operators are expected to announce similar changes as the year unfolds. “Services will increase rather notably in the course of the year,” said Jarmo Oksaharju, Managing Director of Matkahuolto. It’s beneficial for consumers in the short term because competition will offer further alternatives.”
Matkahuolto is owned by private bus and coach operators, to which it provides marketing, ticket sales and other services. “Onnibus is operating alongside our services on National Road 5, where we and Koiviston Auto operate,” said Raimo O. Honkanen, Managing Director of Savonlinja. “The same applies to all main roads north from Helsinki. We have to adjust our position one way or the other.” Koiviston Auto is halving its fares on the Helsinki—Kuopio route to €30 and the Helsinki—Lahti route to €10, below the price of an advance train ticket. “Train Z has seen our passenger numbers fall to one-fifth of record levels,” said Kari Hietaniemi from Koiviston Auto. “We’ll now see whether or not we can get any
passengers back.” As part of its new price regime, Koiviston Auto will also lower the prices of tickets purchased from drivers to the levels of tickets bought online in a bid to attract more passengers. Mika Mäkilä, the Managing Director at the Finnish Bus and Coach Association, says that operators have yet to fully align their prices to the demand. “We’re getting closer to genuine competition where the nature of services is determined by the demand,” he said. Competition effectively began with Onnibus’ foray into the public transport sector in 2012. The budget operator has declared its intention to double the scope of its operations this year. “You can expect us to expand
aggressively,” said Pekka Möttö, Onnibus Managing Director. “We’ll launch new routes and increase our service frequency.” The operator increased services between Helsinki and Turku, no more than a couple of days after a similar move by one of its main rivals on the route, Vainion Liikenne. “I’d say that competition is generally very tough,” said Matti Vainio, Managing Director at Vainion Liikenne. “It looks like customers will benefit and prices will stay [at their current levels] in the near future.” All the managing directors appear confident that the popularity of bus and coach travel will grow as new routes are being launched and service frequencies increased. However, the constant changes in prices and routes may prove problematic for commuters.
Competition heats up

FACE TO FACE › CHRIS BOWLES
Managing Stagecoach’s Mancunian David Barrow talks to Chris Bowles, Managing Director of Stagecoach Manchester about a 40-year career in a job he describes as “forever testing, but always rewarding.” All photos by the author, unless otherwise stated

hris Bowles is no stranger at industry events. He’s the sort of individual who people respect but does not have to raise his voice to be heard. Always a friendly igure who enjoys a catchup, he presides over what is often regarded as one of the jewels in the Stagecoach crown. What’s more, he has now reached a landmark in his career.
Career
CBW Chris, how did you come to be in the bus industry? Chris Bowles (CB) It all began in the south of England in 1974 where I started as a conductor, then a driver. I applied for a position with Greater Manchester PTE on their Management Training Scheme, and I went on from there. It wasn’t particularly planned that way. I have worked for Stagecoach and its predecessor for 40 years. Stagecoach took over the southern division of Greater Manchester Buses in 1996. So I’ve been in the Manchester area all that 18 | COACH & BUS WEEK | January 13, 2015

time, apart from the 10 years between 2000 and 2010 when I was exiled to Lancashire and then Cumbria. I have been the MD here in Manchester for the past four years. CBW What is a typical week for you?
CB Running a company of this size, and in this area, takes me away more often than I like from what I would call the ‘nuts and bolts’ of our operations. That means engaging at regular intervals with local authorities, stakeholders and partners. Because we do not operate in a vacuum, we need the support of other bodies in the Greater Manchester area. I have regular meetings with them to discuss all aspects of our business which affects them in their area. Because we use their road space, we have to plan what we can and cannot do in the future. The other half of the week is meeting with my management team to ensure that our operation and performance levels are at their best for our customers to enjoy. One of the most important aspects of being a
Managing Director is depot visits. My team of fellow directors and I have regular visits to all of our six garages, plus we have monthly meetings with all our depot managers together, so it’s possible to resolve any problems, to talk about strategy, to monitor performance and see that the units are performing eficiently. CBW Competition – is it a problem?
CB The short answer is no. We live and work in a competitive environment. The Manchester market is as dynamic and competitive as it has ever been. There may be fewer operators, but competition is still there. It is important that we provide the best possible service for our customers, in the standard of our leet, presentation, value for money fares and punctuality. These should be our main objectives and competition helps us to focus on that. We are not afraid of competition – we are the best value operator in Greater Manchester – and have been for some time. www.coachandbusweek.com

An ADL Enviro400 Hybrid is seen in Albert Square
Stockport bus station and its famous railway arches CBW You have expanded your operating area during the last two years. Is this set to continue? CB We have acquired three businesses since 2012, two of them in North Manchester; because we think it’s important that Stagecoach services are not conined to one particular area. We saw that fares were higher and the service poorer by comparison, so we saw an opportunity to improve services in North Manchester and apply Stagecoach’s standards.
CBW Since you acquired the Wigan operation from First in 2012, there have been a number of union disputes, have these now been resolved? CB All the businesses that we have acquired over the last two years had been underperforming – that’s what attracted us to them in the irst place. So at Wigan we have grown the business by about 15%, but there are underlying problems of low revenue
A BRIEF HISTORY
Stagecoach Manchester Stagecoach Manchester came about after the break-up of Greater Manchester Buses (GM Buses) in 1993. The two separate companies became GM Buses North and GM Buses South. The South division was sold to Stagecoach in February 1996. In fact, the company had been on Stagecoach’s shopping list for two years – Stagecoach even put an advertisement in the local newspaper saying that if it took over the company, it would put into service 125 new buses within the first 12 months. Stagecoach
The Magic Bus fleet is soon to be upgraded with ADL Enviro400s itself had previously started a small operation in Stockport in 1994. In 2014 the company has depots at Hyde Road and Sharston in Manchester, plus Middleton, Stockport, Ashton-under-Lyne and Wigan. Notably, Hyde Road is home

compared with the rest of Manchester, and relatively high cost. It’s more expensive to run buses in Wigan than the rest of Manchester, so there were a lot of historical issues that had to be addressed if we were to invest in the business and improve things for the passengers. Unfortunately, some staff had to be persuaded to move on to less costly conditions which, in turn, led to a number of one-day strikes. We have now reached an agreement in principle and we now need to iron out the details which, in turn, will mean that Wigan can progress and we can invest in the operation.
Operating in Greater Manchester
CBW Manchester city centre congestion must cause you no end of problems now that they have started to build a second crossing for the Metrolink tram system? CB Congestion in Manchester is the worst I have seen in the last ive years. It is our biggest challenge at this time. It’s costing us £6m a year just in extra resources to keep some sort of reasonable level of services; congestion has been getting worse since September. It isn’t just the expansion of the Metrolink – the railway’s ‘Northern Hub’ will see road closures which we have no control over – but when it’s all inished it should help to alleviate congestion which will beneit us and everybody else.
CBW The expansion of the Metrolink shows no signs of easing up. It’s now going to Manchester Airport, completed 12 months ahead of schedule, and the latest proposal is to go to Trafford Park – all in your operating area. Is it having an impact on your services? CB We welcome it if it takes cars off the road and offers public transport users a choice. On an individual route basis, of course it is a threat to some of our services and we will need to assess what impact it will have on them and possibly we will have to adapt accordingly. CBW What are your views on the proposed bus priority plans for Oxford Road?

CB Yes, it would have been nice to win gold, but we were beaten by Nottingham City Transport, but having said that, we have been shortlisted every year for the past five years.
Fleet
CBW Stagecoach Manchester operates the highest number of hybrid buses outside London. Is this set to continue?
This is the newest depot at Sharston, opened in 2011
CB I think it is a bit regrettable that the hybrid revolution has come to a bit of a halt with the end of the Green Bus Fund, which is continuing in Scotland, but not in the rest of the UK. We have taken 128 hybrid double-deckers from Alexander-Dennis since 2011. In fact, we have invested over £80m in 540 new buses since 2007. Our latest new buses are 29 conventional diesel-powered AlexanderDennis Euro 6 Enviro 400 MMCs. Delivery commenced before the end of the year of 2014. However, the hybrid will still be an important part of our long-term strategy.
Conclusion
CBW And finally, if you could sum up the last 40 years for yourself.
ADL Enviro 400 MMC Euro 6. The first MMCs for Stagecoach UK, a simplified livery, more white, less orange, only one tree/branch deflector. STEVE HODGSON CB We welcome it. It means cars will be banned from six in the morning until nine at night and it will see buses segregated from cyclists. Oxford Road is still very congested, even though there are less operators using it.

Once it’s completed our journey time will be reduced.
CBW The Coalition government wants to appoint a Mayor for Greater Manchester who would be responsible for local transport, including the power to run franchised bus services and provide Oysterstyle integrated tickets – are you in favour? CB I am neither for nor against a Mayor; it’s about whichever authority is in charge making the right decisions to improve public transport. We will wait and see and participate in the public consultations on the matter. So far we have little detail on what is proposed. CBW Do you have a good relationship with Transport for Greater Manchester?
CB Yes we do, we have a range of partnerships, some formal, some informal. We need their support and they are an important customer. CBW At this years’ UK Bus Awards you were awarded silver in the City Operator of The Year category.
CB It has been a career of change which has happened at regular intervals. The 1970s were a great challenge because everybody was predicting a decline in passenger numbers. The industry re-invented itself during the late 1970s and early 80s. It became more passengerfocussed, marketing came into its own, which had not happened before. Then came deregulation in 1986 and all the competition; there were many highs and lows during that period. We then had the 1990s and the necessary and sometimes painful process of consolidation and investing in the business. Stagecoach Manchester has grown its business, i.e. passenger numbers, every year since 1996. I don’t think there are many operators outside of London who can say that. On a personal note, it is a great industry to be in. It’s full of great characters who will always pick you up when things are not going to plan. Motivation and dedication are what we have here in Manchester – from the top to the drivers, the mechanics and all our behind-the-scene staff. We have just installed, on every bus, AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location), and I was struck by the enthusiasm which all our staff have for this ‘new’ technology. I remember seeing a demonstration in London in 1976. It’s always rewarding seeing this enthusiasm, and just as people expect me to motivate them, I’m always looking for them to help motivate me. n l A special thanks Mike Brinicombe, Fleet Engineer and his staff at Sharston depot for their kind hospitality, which included an excellent Christmas lunch.

DRIVER › LONDON BUSES
A capital weekend As part of his prize at this year’s UK Bus Driver of the Year Competition, and in connection with London’s ‘Year of the Bus,’ 2014 winner Jonathan Welch spent a weekend in London courtesy of TfL, with the chance to drive an iconic New Routemaster
T
hose of you who read CBW regularly might remember that a couple of months ago, I wrote about winning this year’s UK Bus Driver of the Year (BDoY) competition in Blackpool. You might also recall, that an additional prize this year was a trip to London courtesy of Transport for London (TfL), with two nights’ accommodation, travel, and a chance to drive one of London’s New Routemasters. So it was after some negotiation between myself, BDoY and TfL, and the generosity of my employer (First Aberdeen) in allowing me time off, that at the end of November, I found myself at Aberdeen railway station boarding Scotrail’s Caledonian Sleeper, heading for three days in London. Some of you may have heard of it, but few of you will have used it – which is a shame, as the sleeper is an excellent service, linking Aberdeen, Inverness, Fort William, Edinburgh and Glasgow with London six nights a week. I chose it over flying partly because I always enjoy travelling by rail, and partly as it meant I could have a relaxing trip yet arrive in the centre of London before 0800hrs on the first day of my three-day trip.
Acton depot
After depositing my luggage at the hotel, it was straight off to Acton, to visit the London Transport Museum’s collection at Acton depot. Normally only open for a few days a month, I had mentioned that I’d like to arrange my trip to coincide with the collection being opened, but the wonderful Carol at TfL, who had the unenviable job of sorting out the weekend, went one better and arranged for me to be given a private tour of the museum by Niall Devitt, who proved to be an obviously passionate and knowledgeable guide. I was privileged to be allowed to step on board and sit in the cabs of vehicles normally out of bounds, including RM1, the unique FRM, and the recently restored to WW1 condition ‘Battle 22 | COACH & BUS WEEK | January 13, 2015 022_027_CBW1171_London Bus.indd 22

Bus,’ still with spots of Belgian dirt from its trip to the battlefields on the mudguards. It was, of course, an honour to be allowed on board, and to pose behind the wheel for a photograph, but at the same time, a stark reminder that what I had achieved by winning the BDoY competition was nothing in comparison to the bus drivers of 100 years ago, transporting troops to and from the front lines, putting their vehicle and their lives in peril, day after day, in very difficult conditions. As time marched on, we had to bring the tour to an end, not having time to look at many of the smaller items in the collection, since we had spent so much time talking and admiring the excellent restoration work of the depot’s skilled craftsmen, who really are a credit to the museum. Niall joined me on the Underground back to Waterloo, where I had time to grab a quick lunch before I headed to my next appointment, at Go-Ahead’s Waterloo Bus Garage.
Driving a BYD electric
Arriving on time, I was embarrassed to find myself interrupting General Manager Pat Mahon and Base Manager Rashid Short’s lunch. Following a chat and brief interview for TfL and Go-Ahead, I was introduced to mentor Diana Smolarek. After we had all posed for pictures, she showed me around the vehicle I was going to drive, before letting me loose on the roads of central London… Now, those of you who know Waterloo will know that it is a very small depot, and full of single-deckers, mainly Mercedes-Benz Citaros, so what, you might be asking, was I doing there? In fact, always interested in things which are a little out of the ordinary, I had also cheekily asked when planning the trip if it might be possible to try driving one of the Chinese-built BYD electric single deckers. Go-Ahead were very gracious in agreeing – for which I am most grateful. Diana was most thorough, taking time to explain the layout of the bus, inside and out,

DRIVER › LONDON BUSES showing me the array of switches as well as the many unique features of this very different vehicle. The battery packs over both front wheels, the many access panels with ‘Danger’ written on them, the dashboard readouts for energy use and the sockets for recharging. There is a lot for a prospective driver to get used to. Once we were both happy, it was time to set off from the yard, which I suspect had Diana (and anyone else watching) a little worried, as I took time to get used to the very different handling characteristics of the bus. I think the best way I can describe it is like a giant child’s electric toy, press the accelerator to go, release it and the bus slows down much more quickly than its diesel cousins. I was impressed by the technology, the bus drove well, feeling very solid and composed, and I quickly forgot any worries about running out of electricity.
Right The Chinese-built BYD electric single-decker felt like a large electric toy For a driver used to a diesel bus, it was a very different experience, and I kept waiting for it to change gear as the motor speed increased to a whine at speed. Unfortunately, I have to say that whilst I liked the bus overall, it was also clear to me that in terms of fixtures and fittings, the manufacturer has a long way to go, with a number of rattles and creaks being apparent on a bus barely a year old. I have to say, driving in London was an experience, and those who do it every day deserve much credit. Maybe it was through driving an unfamiliar vehicle, maybe because I didn’t know the roads, but it certainly felt much tighter, the lanes often much narrower, and the cyclists more kamikaze than we’re used to in Aberdeen. I had to stay alert, but with Diana’s excellent instructions and guidance, we made it safely back to Waterloo Garage. As our journey came to an end, I was amused to hear from Diana that having heard I was from Scotland, she was worried she would not understand me. Fortunately, my native Yorkshire accent posed her ‘nae’ problems. My thanks must go to her and to Pat and Rashid for making it possible – it will be interesting to see how the bus compares with our own hydrogen-fuelled Van Hools in

DRIVER › LONDON BUSES
Delvin Kelly shows Jonathan around New Routemaster LT297
Jonathan said the cab is “well designed”
Mentor Delvin gives Jonathan a thorough rundown on the New Routemaster
Aberdeen, due to be introduced in the near future.
Control Centre visit
In stereotypical bus driver fashion, we’d arrived back at Waterloo much later than planned, and so I had to hurry to my next appointment, a meeting with TfL’s Managing Director of Surface Transport Leon Daniels, and a tour of the very impressive facility that is TfL’s control centre, a reminder of the huge amount of work that goes in to providing public transport in London, unseen by most users, but absolutely vital in keeping the traffic moving. As I headed towards the end of my first day in London, I had time to return to my hotel, meet my girlfriend who had arrived from Germany to join me, get changed and head out for food and to the theatre.
Driving a New Routemaster
After an enjoyable night’s entertainment, I was up early on Saturday to head down to Stockwell Garage, where I was met by Assistant Operations Manager Wendy Slater, who introduced me to today’s mentor, Delvin Kelly, before we headed out to find our bus for the morning, one of TfL’s New Routemasters, or
‘A vital and memorable piece of advice from Delvin as we drove was “remember to breathe,” as I looked a little nervous’ www.coachandbusweek.com
022_027_CBW1171_London Bus.indd 27
The drive took place in Stockwell and Clapham Borismasters if you prefer, registered ‘LTZ 1297,’ fleetnumber LT 297. Again today, we were joined by Communications Co-ordinator Greg French who took plenty of pictures as Delvin showed me around the bus. The training session was very thorough, and just like Diana, Delvin was a credit to Go-Ahead, his clarity and knowledge making it easy to take everything in, and his patience when we got on the road much appreciated. Wendy and Greg joined us as we headed out onto the roads of south London, through the seemingly vibrant communities of Stockwell and Clapham, pausing to get some pictures around Clapham Common, and giving me a chance to get a feel for the bus in heavy traffic as well as on faster-moving open roads. A vital and memorable piece of advice from Delvin as we drove was “remember to breathe,” as I looked a little nervous. He wasn’t wrong, I was very conscious that I was driving someone else’s bus, on unfamiliar roads, and with lots of eyes on me as I did so. Considering its size, longer than most double-
deckers, I was impressed at how easy the bus was to drive, in most respects better than the BYD single-decker, and better than lots of other modern double-deckers, though considering the price premium, that should be no surprise. I found the cab area to be well designed, with excellent visibility, and the bus responded well to my control inputs. Indeed, I was rarely aware of the bus switching between battery-only mode and the diesel engine kicking in to top up the batteries as required, the engine being very unobtrusive in operation. Overall, I was very impressed with the bus, and enjoyed driving it. Having returned the bus safely to the depot, the rest of the day was free for us to enjoy the sights of London, and we spent time visiting Camden’s famous market, shopping around Covent Garden, and before we both headed home on Sunday, found time to visit the excellent recreation of Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, before re-joining the train back to Aberdeen.
Conclusion
I was a little overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness shown by everyone I had encountered, giving up some of their valuable time to show me around, explain things and take me out on the road. I am happy to be able to give thanks to Go-Ahead’s Wendy, Delvin, Pat, Diana, and Greg for giving me copies of the photos, as well as Niall Devitt and his colleagues at Acton, Carol Quearney at TfL, and of course Leon Daniels for taking time out of his busy schedule. I thoroughly enjoyed my weekend in London, and am proud to have not only won the UK Bus Driver of the Year competition, but to have done it in 2014, Year of the Bus. n January 13, 2015 | COACH & BUS WEEK | 27

COACH OPEN DAY › PARRYS INTERNATIONAL
A successful Sunday Gareth Evans reports on Parrys International’s popular annual open day, held on Sunday, which literally attracts thousands of customers through the door
L
ike the coaches themselves, Parrys International’s popular annual open day is in a class of its own. More than 2,000 people headed for a warm welcome at Landywood Green on a sunny but bitterly cold Sunday.
The Tourliner
Attracting a lot of interest from those interested in coaches was the latest addition to the fleet – a Neoplan Tourlier – which as exclusively reported in last week’s issue, arrived from MAN Manchester on Monday. Registered ‘OY64KLF,’ and named ‘City of Truro,’ the vehicle’s smart interior attracted lots of favourable comments. In a fleet dominated by the highly-specified Starliners and Van Hools, asked why he has bought a Tourliner, Dave Parry replied: “There are few choices left now. Our fleet has always been MAN-powered. The Starliner is a complete MAN product. “The Tourliner has been bought for feeders and as a spare vehicle. We have reduced the seating capacity from 49 to 42. It was a white stock vehicle. “It’s still got a lot of Neoplan attributes and a four-year warranty, with a service contract. “We’ve already done some customisation but
that task has not been finished yet. The work done during the past week includes darkening the glazing, and the application of our livery – although that too is not entirely complete. “We won’t be fitting the full seatback entertainment system as the seats need to be built with it fitted. While it will not have a servery at the rear, it does however, have a coffee machine. “We’ve had spare vehicles before – the Setra S416GT-HD being the most recent. You may recall that we ran it in dealer white, but our customers went mad. They complained it was ‘not a Parrys coach.’ That’s the problem – when you get to a certain standard, people expect you to remain up high.” The next two additions to the fleet will be landmark vehicles, as Dave enthused: “We’ve got two Starliners in-build at the moment, which will be the last two ever for the UK.” Asked what the new vehicles will be replacing, Dave responded: “We’re going to sell one Van Hool but the fleet size will increase by two Starliners.”
Trade support
As always, a band of Parrys’ suppliers were invited to have a presence at the open day. Attracting a lot of favourable comment was

“We’re here to talk to customers. We get a lot of repeat custom. Parrys is a premium, sleek operator. We’re delighted to keep being invited here.” If endorsement of the Winnock was required, a lady butted in: “I can’t recommend his hotel enough. My husband and I went twice last year. The staff are lovely and that food is great.” Another hotelier present was Marriott. Louise Fitzpatrick, National Account Manager – Travel Trade said: “This is our fourth or fifth year here. We will support any coach operator’s holiday show if they wish. It’s great to meet guests and support operators selling their products. This event is huge – there’s a real buzz in the air.” Other suppliers present included Encore tickets, Queensmead Hotel from the Isle of Wight, The Tourist Office from Bavaria, Accor, Holiday Inn Leeds, Jersey Tourist Office and a wine grower from Rudesheim – while Action Tours represented Ireland. Not to be forgotten were the staff who sold Parrys-branded ‘goodies’ such as caps, pens, mouse mats and model Van Hool coaches – the latter and former available for £5 and 50p each respectively.

Dave’s verdict
“The event performed exactly as expected,” enthused Dave. “We took about the same number of people as last year. We click the visitors as they enter the garage. Those who might be short of time and only visit the booking office are not counted.” He added: “Allowing people into the garage is good PR – they like to go behind the scenes.” Commenting on the guest appearance of Brendan Sheerin of Channel 4’s Coach Trip programme, Dave said: “Brendan was very impressed with our coaches. He was outgoing – he was really great with people. He was happy to give people autographs and pose for photos too. He’s an excellent ambassador for the coach industry. “We expect to get a lot of press coverage after the event due to both my speedway connection and Brendan’s presence. Nine rotating jets provide a thorough underchassis clean, while being kept below pressures which can damage delicate parts or external management systems

Surrey-based WNV Systems, in conjunction with its sister company FDI-European, is supporting bus operators with their under chassis cleaning requirements, with systems which it says represent proven health and safety gains and return on investment, typically recycling 90% of water used. Consequently, the business has seen increased demand from the coach and bus industry, reinforced by the current economic climate, cost savings targets and health and safety legislation. WNV Systems is a specialist company that designs, manufactures, supplies and installs heavy vehicle wash facilities, primarily for the bus, coach, HGV, local authorities and rail industries. The company was formed in 1994, initially as a maintenance provider for general vehicle cleaning equipment. The company now provides washes, under chassis washes, water reclaim systems, rain water harvesting systems, pressure washes and all associated chemicals, parts and service or repair. Other specialist services it provides include water testing for Legionella programmes in line with HSE guidelines. 30 | COACH & BUS WEEK | January 13, 2015

Stagecoach is one of several large operators which has had a WVN Systems chassis wash installed
Money saving system
In 2004, WNV Systems designed and patented its unique Automatic Under Chassis Wash, which the company says typically takes 20 minutes to clean a double-decker bus to MOT standards at a cost of below £2.00 per wash, giving a full width clean from its nine rotating jets. Pressure is kept below levels which might invalidate guarantees on vehicles with exterior
mounted management systems. Alex Elbrow of WNV Systems explained: “The wash achieves this quality of clean and time eficiency even with extremely dirty vehicles, including those that regularly drive over landill sites or on gritted winter roads. “The machine is robust and energy eficient, built using low energy consumption waterproof pumps, without seals, to deliver maximum life span and reliability. “The wash has gone through much development over the years and now is by far the leading automatic system available with great cleaning and proven reliability.” Under chassis cleaning has generally been done by hand, which Alex said represents huge health and safety implications as well as costs. However, there are few health and safety concerns with the WNV machine, as no one needs to be under the vehicle during the cleaning operation. It has been installed at several major bus operators including at Go-Ahead Group, National Express and Stagecoach, as well as a number of independent bus and coach operators. www.coachandbusweek.com

washing systems that not only meet, but exceed, cost saving, labour efficiency and environmental targets.”
WNV Systems recently installed its 60th automatic under chassis wash for the coach and bus industry – Epsom Coaches Group being the latest company to install the system. Steve Whiteway, Managing Director of Epsom Coaches Group, explained: “We have always aimed to clean vehicles to the highest standards, not only in terms of visual presentation, but also to facilitate maintenance. “The auto chassis wash is simplicity itself to operate and does a very thorough job. Most importantly it has proven to be durable and reliable, something we have not experienced with other manufacturers in the past. “The labour saving and economical operation of the system coupled with the benefits of clean vehicles for our engineers has fully justified our investment in WNV’s equipment – we are delighted with the results.”

WNV Three Brush Rollover Gantry Wash As well as the under chassis wash, WNV Systems also offers standard vehicle washes, such as the three brush rollover. The vehicle to be washed is parked and the operator then selects a specific wash programme for that vehicle before pushing the start button. The system’s three brushes will then traverse the vehicle, providing it with a soft and quiet, yet effective clean. To prevent the operator or driver accidently selecting the incorrect wash programme, a card or fuel management key can be used to automatically select the wash programme for the vehicle in question. The equipment has a maximum wash height of 4.2m, but can be extended to 4.5m, 4.7m or 5m to cover the tallest of vehicles.

Another customer to benefit from WNV Systems’ product recently was the local authority in Stockport. The authority awarded the work to WMV after it submitted a very competitive proposal. Julie Bowker, of Stockport County Local Authority, said: “The ability to supply automatic chassis washing, vehicle body cleaning, an approved water reclamation system, rainwater harvesting, all civil work and full length/ height screens and total project management, gave WNV Systems the technical and pricing advantage over their competitors in our recent tender, showing second to none knowledge of our industry and its problems.” Geoff Elbrow, Managing Director of WNV Systems, added: “We understand the challenges facing the coach and bus market and we have the flexibility in our designs and range of machines to provide commercial vehicle
Handheld pressure wash For operators without the luxury of space for a full size bus or coach wash, WNV offers handheld static cabinet pressure washers. The hot static cabinets are all custom made to the customer’s requirements, with a range of pump and motor configurations. The boiler units they use are all of a proven quality and reliability standard. The equipment is thermostatically controlled, with adjustable temperature settings for different weather conditions. All cabinets are heated to protect from the frost. They only use quality Italian and German parts. The pressure washers can be specked with hot and cold water, foaming lances and to any size or pressure required. WNV Systems sells the pressure washes as a complete package or can provide them on a rental basis.
Recycling water
The automated under chassis wash is normally installed in tandem with a water reclamation system specifically designed by WNV Systems to process the effluent produced in the cleaning operation. By doing this, it recycles 90% of water used to wash a vehicle. This water reclamation system is fully approved by DEFRA (the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and meets all water authority standards. The cost of the system can be offset against tax (using the governments Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme) and reduces fresh water consumption and therefore running costs. WVN estimates that the reclamation system can pay for itself in two-three years, depending on usage. The automatic under chassis wash installations are eminently suitable for integration into rainwater harvesting systems, and a number are already in operation, providing significant savings in water costs. If supplied with a reclaim and rainwater harvesting system the wash can clean without any fresh water input being required at all.
All-encompassing service
Each member of WVN’s team of service engineers located throughout the UK possess over 10 years’ experience concentrated in the commercial vehicle cleaning industry. The company not only manufactures, but also installs and services all types of wash equipment. It can also provide any civil work required and often installs on existing wash pads, or erects new screens and buildings. n
l CBW would like to thank Alex Elbrow for his help in compiling this feature. Contact WVN Systems on 0208 8641 5601 or visit www.wnv-systems.com for more information. January 13, 2015 | COACH & BUS WEEK | 31 12/01/2015 10:12

VEHICLE PRESENTATION OSPREYDEEPCLEAN
What does everyone who uses public transport have in common? They all need to get from A to B. Providing people with a service is pivotal to a transport company but what some fail to focus on is enhancing the customer experience to stand themselves apart from competitors. Low standards of cleanliness, bad odours and general poor presentation of a bus do not help to achieve this. To increase business and maintain a good reputation, it is not simply that cleanliness must addressed but it is also important to exceed the minimum expected standards. Not many companies can afford to replace their entire leet regularly and despite signiicant investment, there are still a large number of older, slightly tired buses in operation. Can the presentation of these buses be improved upon? OspreyDeepclean think the answer is most deinitely yes. Traditional cleaning methods still perform the job they were meant to but the end result is too
BEFORE
AFTER
OspreyDeepclean can make a dramatic difference to the cleanliness of vehicles dependent on external factors – operator proiciency, training and staff motivation to name a few. OspreyDeepclean’s range of dry steam technology achieves a far higher level of cleanliness and sanitation with much less effort, in much less time and turns an everyday clean into a deep clean.
32 | COACH & BUS WEEK | January 13, 2015 030_032_CBW1171_Industry Guide_Vehicle Presentation.indd 32
Simply by using cold, clean tap water, super-heated to 180°C, the dry steam vapour produced does all of the hard work with only light agitation required by the operator. Dry steam can be used on practically every surface; seat footings, side panels, ceilings, rear seat wells, driver’s cab, stairs, bus entrances, wall/loor junctions to name a few. It will also clean and sanitise the fabric of the seats and leave them smelling fresh. Dry steam also brings a number of environmental beneits including water savings. One litre of tap water provides approximately 1,600 litres of dry steam vapour. There is very little requirement for any harsh or costly chemicals, no discharge, no pollution – just minimal use of a natural resource. Dry steam vapour was originally introduced as a tool for removing chewing gum which can be a real headache on public transport. Used in conjunction with Osprey’s own detergent, gum is removed easily, quickly and with no residue. Dry steam is just that…dry! Very little
water remains on the surfaces after cleaning and to remove any that is left, most of Osprey’s machines have integral vacuum units which leave surfaces touch dry and ready for immediate use. No excess down time is needed after cleaning to allow for chemicals to be rinsed away or surfaces/fabrics to dry. All of the company’s machines are easy to manoeuvre and are supplied with lockable caster wheels. Double-decker buses are no stumbling block for the technology either. Machines are supplied as standard with a four metre long electrical cable and a four metre steam and vacuum hose making all of those hard to reach areas using the more traditional methods easy and effortless to clean. Operators are invited to contact OspreyDeepclean for a free onsite demonstration and see the true power and potential of dry steam for themselves.

DELIVERIES EXCALIBUR COACHES
London-based coach operator Excalibur Coaches has taken delivery of four new Volvo B11R coaches with Sunsundegui SC7 bodywork to operate on a Terravision contract. Operating daily between London and Stanstead Airport, the new tri-axle Euro 5 vehicles are proving to be popular with both passengers and drivers alike. “It was the all-round package from Volvo that appealed to us,” explained Excalibur Coaches’ Managing Director, Mark Jewell. “We’ve had Volvo coaches before in 2009 and the performance and reliability we’ve had from them undoubtedly played a major role in us specifying Volvo again. “Volvo impressed us enormously with their fuel economy results. They were able to clearly demonstrate in-service statistics with their B11R coach and those promises are already living up to expectations.
BLAKES COACHES Blakes Coaches of East Anstey, near Tiverton, Devon has taken delivery of another Scania Irizar i6 executive specification coach. The chassis of the vehicle is a K440EB6x2*4 with a 440bhp Euro 5 Scania engine and Scania’s fully-automated Opticruise gear selection system. The vehicle has been specified with 53 halfleather passenger seats with exclusive Moquette covering, footrests, rear seat tables, extra dark tinted glazing,
“Our drivers and the passengers have been commenting positively on the new vehicles and we are delighted with their performance so far. “We also receive great back-up and support from Volvo Bus and in addition Regional Coach Sales Manager, Jo Standbridge was extremely helpful and
thorough. It has been yet another positive purchasing experience from Volvo Bus.” The Excalibur Coaches 14 metre vehicles have been specially adapted to adhere to DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) requirements, which include allowing space for an onboard wheelchair and installing a passenger lift.

OLYMPIA TRAVEL
Wigan-based Olympia Travel UK broke with a tradition of buying Volvo coaches to take its first i6 Integral from Irizar UK. The 25-vehicle operator said it was looking for a change of engine in their fleet having stuck with the same marque since 1995: “We looked at another DAFengined coach but it was more expensive,” said Shaun Lewis – a Director of the company. “The i6 also offered us 53 seats in a two-axle coach, which was what we needed,” he said. “It gives a nice drive, and although it’s only been on one tour so far, I’ve had no complaints from the driver,” he said. The i6 selected by Olympia
and coupled to the Volvo I-Shift gearbox. Each vehicle also features an onboard TV screen, WiFi and eight CCTV cameras. Volvo Regional Sales Manager, Jo Standbridge said: “Excalibur Coaches were looking for four DDA compliant coaches and we were able to supply some quality B11Rs with Sunsundegui SC7 body in a package that suited their needs. “Key operator requirements such as passenger capacity, fuel economy and overall reliability were achieved with these new coaches and we look forward to continuing our successful partnership in the future.” FACT FILE

INBOX NEWS › XXXXXX
Remember us OAPs please Mr Griffiths As a concessionary LETTER fare holder and a mall shareholder in the big of the week groups, I am obviously concerned if the concessionary fare scheme is making operators worse off. However, I am also worried about Stagecoach CEO Martin Griffiths’ comments on the scheme’s existence. He needs to take care that he does not throw out the baby with the bathwater. The industry needs to lobby government with proof of how much operators are worse off with the scheme. It needs to bear in mind that all concessionary fares are singles,
whereas fare paying passengers will often buy returns, rovers, Megariders etc.and that in many cases, without concessionary fares, some would not use the bus at all. I find that many journeys are to the health centre, chemists, hospital, opticians – places many of us did not visit for 20 or 30 years in our younger days – or to the local shops, which years ago we would walk to. The scheme thus only returns the status quo to many of us. Many older people, though perfectly happy to drive locally, prefer not to drive in large cities, and this has helped lessen congestion. An occasional day
out on the bus no longer has to be budgeted for, which itself was often a worry for those on limited income if using several operators and or crossing county boundaries. To many on low incomes, the concessionary fares scheme is the best thing since the start of the old age pension and the NHS. Martin Griffiths suggests some people can afford to pay. We could all say that about other people, but I suspect many pensioners far wealthier than the average bus passenger ‘trouser’ the winter fuel payment without a thought. David Lilley, Saffron Walden
A welcome passenger perspective
I enjoyed reading Andy Izatt’s article on Stagecoach Gold & Arriva Electric (CBW1167). I hope there will be more articles on Passenger Perspectives of well-known bus routes from around the UK during 2015. There is just a minor correction to the article, service X4 is actually operated by Stagecoach Midlands not Stagecoach East as the article implies. Many thanks, Paul Harvey, By email Editor’s note: We are delighted to hear you enjoyed the article. You will be pleased to hear we do have plans to feature them regularly.

I really enjoyed Jade Smith’s article about Josh McCracken of Dudley’s Coaches in issue 1166. When there is so much talk about an ageing profession, it was inspiring to read about Josh. It was a delight to hear about his enthusiasm for coaching. I live in Redditch, not far from Dudley’s base in Radford. Monday: Jade here. It’s my first day back after Christmas holidays so I have a lot to catch up on. Tuesday: Due to the holidays, today is press day. We finish earlier than expected considering the long break. Wednesday: Send out emails to organise interviews with various people for the weeks ahead. I enjoy doing face-to-face interviews more than telephone interviews – the content always seems to be better. Thursday: Manage to organise an interview for Friday, despite the short notice on my part. The organiser is very quick to respond to my queries and arrange a time for me to meet my interviewee – if more people were like this everything would be a lot easier. Friday: Travel to Fulwell bus garage to interview Richard Emerton, Silver winner of the Top London Bus Driver award, who is extremely welcoming and fun. The poor weather and low light means I fail to get any decent photographs of the garage – but I try anyway, earning some odd looks from passers-by. I walk to my parents’ house after the interview to stay with them for the weekend. Saturday: I help my parents create online accounts for their local surgery. The passwords prove problematic with upper case and lower case letters needing to be included, as well as at least two numbers. My mother gets frustrated when she can’t make an appointment online as according to the website there are no slots available for the whole year. Not everything can be automated.

Ride a Scania-powered railbus How do you brighten up a dull Sunday in January – when the weather is cold, and the other option is being stuck in front of your laptop doing work? If like your Editor, you are interested in both road and rail buses, the Nene Valley Railway (NVR) is operating its delightful Swedish railbus this month. Being a single car unit, the vehicle is normally only used during special events, private charters or on certain off-peak operating days. The ‘Winter Warmer’ services run on the next two Sundays – January 18 and 25. Built for the Swedish State Railways (SJ) in 1958, no.1212 has an unusual appearance, being one of the widest vehicles ever to have run in the UK. With the near ground level loading there is no room underneath for the engine. It is therefore found in one of the driver’s cabs and passengers have to walk past it to enter the main saloon. The on-board heaters churn out a pleasant warmth – and if you sit in the right place, you can enjoy the view of the line ahead.
The railbus is seen awaiting departure from Peterborough Nene Valley station on January 4 And here’s the other bus connection – the vehicle is powered by a Scania D815 engine. CBW understands discussions have been held with Scania at Milton Keynes about a new head gasket.
For details, visit www.nvr.org. uk/events/winter-warmer or call 01780 784444. The NVR also offers a Pump Trolley Experience, details of which can be found at http://irps-wl. org.uk/about/pump-hire.
Chilean miscreant bus-ted by driver A man was given a rude awakening by a vigilante bus driver as he tried to snatch a handbag off a passenger in a dramatic incident caught on camera. Sky News posted the video online, which showed a would-be thief who tried to steal a woman’s handbag on a bus getting more than he bargained for when his hand was trapped in the vehicle’s door as he tried to flee. The driver, who had shut the door to prevent him escaping and was clearly used to this kind of behaviour, then beat him repeatedly with a baseball bat as he drove the bus away. The attempted theft, which took place in the Chilean city of Concepcion on October 9, was caught on CCTV. The suspect had just boarded the vehicle when he
attempted to snatch a handbag from a female passenger who was sitting in one of the front seats. After failing to grab it a second time, he tried to run out of the vehicle – but the driver slammed the bus door shut, onto the thief’s hand trapping him.
The bus driver finally stopped the vehicle – but only to allow the thief to be ‘bus-ted’ by waiting police officers…
The video can be found online at http://tinyurl.com/ q9b8wem

HAVE YOUR DPF FILTERS CLEANED THE CORRECT WAY • Filters cleaned in our thermal pulse oven, the only one in the country. • As well as heat, air is pulsed through the filter cleaning it more thoroughly. • For those who are able to bring their vehicles to us we carry out an opacity test before it is removed and also institute a raw smoke test directly from the engine to confirm that the characteristics have not changed since installation. • When the filter is refitted a third test is carried out to ensure that the vehicle is fully compliant with the regulations.
• Should you wish to remove the filter yourselves we offer a collection and delivery service using our own vehicles. • We have vans out everyday collecting and delivering all over the UK. • We will collect your filter one day, clean it the next, and deliver it back to you on the third day.
