Wembley will have to wait even longer to see a major international trophy brought home, but at least it will host some top flight Rugby next year

England supporters jumping ship?

ell, I was hoping to be considering England’s prospects in their upcoming quarter final match in my comment this month, but it wasn’t to be. What a weird World Cup for England. They showed a dramatic improvement over their performance at the previous World Cup, where they barely squeezed through one of the easiest groups in the tournament to be hammered by Germany, yet this time they didn’t win a single match. Perhaps in a different sport England will win a World Cup soon, when we host the Rugby World Cup next year. We have an in-depth feature this month on all the venues hosting games for what will hopefully be a more positive tournament for England. As depressing as the Fifa World Cup exit may be for England fans, it could actually be very positive for the travel trade in the UK. I’ve seen reports of a 4.5% spike in rail, bus and flight bookings since the England vs Uruguay match according to

GoEuro.co.uk. Similar figures were reported in Spain after the Spanish national team suffered an even bigger flop. While the World Cup exit might be bad for the UK’s pubs, it could be very positive for the travel industry, as disgruntled football fans take their families on holiday instead of watching the tournament and pondering what might have been. On a more positive footballing note, I was lucky enough to get the Netherlands in a sweepstake, who went on to dismantle the defending champions Spain 5-1 and have just squeezed past Mexico into a quarter final match with surprise package Costa Rica. Coincidently, we have a feature on the Dutch capital Amsterdam this month – I wonder what the atmosphere is like there at the moment? The Dutch should fancy their chances of winning the whole tournament, being one of the only teams not needing extra time to break through the round of 16. If the run continues, what a great time to visit. James Day — Production Editor July 2014 l Group Travel World

London Ducks return to water London Duck Tours (LDT) has announced the recommencement of its amphibious operation, with an intended start date of Tuesday, July 8. Passengers will once again be able to experience a trip around some of the capital’s most famous sights by road, before the amphibious DUKW vehicles, commonly known as ‘Ducks,’ enter the water and cruise along the Thames. The operator was barred from entering the water after the buoyancy foam in one of the vehicles caught fire in late 2013. However, the vehicles were never taken off the road 6

and the company performed exceptionally well during maintenance audits. During the last nine months the company has taken the opportunity to re-engineer the Ducks to improve safety beyond legislative requirements. The company was pleased to read the announcement made by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) stating that it was satisfied safety concerns had been addressed. This should shortly enable the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to permit LDT to resume its river services.

Royal Yacht Britannia has been named the Best Attraction in the United Kingdom in the TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards 2014. The award reflected the quantity and consistency of five Star ‘Excellent’ reviews posted on the website by visitors to the former Royal Yacht during the last 12 months. To date, 72% of the 5,000 TripAdvisor reviews are Excellent, and 23.5% are Very Good. Britannia has officially been Scotland’s best visitor attraction for the last nine years, with a current quality score of 96%, the highest mark ever awarded to a visitor attraction by national tourist board VisitScotland. With its complimentary audio tour now available in 27 languages, Royal Yacht Britannia is believed to be the most translated audio tour in the world. Last month, Royal Yacht also received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence, an award that is given to the top 10% of tourism businesses in the world. Britannia’s Chief Executive, Bob Downie, said: “We are absolutely delighted that our passion for delivering outstanding customer experiences has been so highly valued on TripAdvisor, and to be Number 1 in the UK is a tremendous achievement that our staff can be very proud of.” www.grouptravelworld.com

Newquay Zoo has welcomed a new resident with the arrival of a female Madagascan Golden Orb Weaver spider and keepers have designed a specially made enclosure with glass on both sides, so that visitors really can ‘get closer.’ Senior Keeper Tristen Holmes said: “Spiders aren’t a favourite for a lot of people, but we wanted to give visitors the opportunity to really appreciate the beauty in all animals and learn about a ‘day in the life’ of an Orb Weaver. “Spiders are often overlooked by conservationists, but they are an essential part of any ecosystem and need protection alongside all animals whose habitat is under threat.” Golden Orb weavers are native to Madagascar as their name suggests, but can also be found in other parts of southern Africa. The females are sixtimes the size of the males and can grow to the size of adult human hand. The spiders have large fangs but aren’t aggressive, and their venom is not dangerous to humans. This species of spider is known for the intricate webs they create – made of golden silk – which can be up to six foot

across, in order to capture large prey such as the Madagascan Moon moth. If they need protein, or the web has been damaged, they will eat their creation, and start building again the next day. These spiders have been known to group together in their thousands and join webs in colonies. Their webs have been used to make clothing in the past, and British designer Simon Peers revived this tradition in 2012 by completing an intricate silk cape created over four years, which was subsequently displayed in the Victoria & Albert museum in London. Golden Orb Weavers are not listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), however, along with many other Madagascan animals there are threats to their natural habitat from deforestation and pollution. Visitors can find this amazing arachnid in the Zoos’ tropical house. The zoo, currently offers school rates of £4.50 per child and £5.50 per adult, with one adult going free with every five children. Group rates for parties of 10 or more are £10.45 for adults, £7.90 for children and £8.95 for seniors.

Sport to boost Scottish tourism VisitScotland has revealed that it hopes to see a significant rise in tourism with the region hosting major upcoming events, such as the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup. According to recent figures, the wealthiest nations in the Commonwealth, outside of the UK, are worth an average of £218m to Scottish Tourism per annum. In 2013, Scotland saw over 314,000 visitors from Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and South Africa. VisitScotland and its partners have since been using its tour of the Commonwealth to generate more interest, targeting key markets with advertising, publicity events and official meetings with industry figures. The launch of several new and extended air routes are thought to also make it easier for guests abroad to visit, with such routes travelling from Chicago to Edinburgh or Glasgow to Dubai. 8

Surf Snowdonia secures government funding Conwy Adventure, the developer of inland surfing lake Surf Snowdonia, has secured a £4.15m grant from the Welsh Government as work commences on the project. The funding was announced by Economy, Science and Transport Minister Edwina Hart on a visit to the site which is situated on the former Aluminium works at Dolgarrog between Llandudno and Betws y Coed. The lake is set to be completed by summer 2015. As well as the surfing lagoon, Surf Snowdonia will also feature a pool, play centre, restaurant, retail area and camp site. eicestershire boasts the historic site of the Battle of Bosworth, with the city’s iconic Cathedral soon to become the final resting place of King Richard III. Groups visiting will discover a number of exploration sites to commemorate the late monarch, who has been buried in the city grounds for approximately 500 years. Short breaks tailored to suit the destination’s unique heritage provide a comfortable stay at a top hotel in the area with entry to the contemporary Richard III Visitor Centre. For more information call the designated Group Visits Co-Ordinator on 0116 299 4444. Donington Le Heath Manor House dates back to the late 13th century and was once inhabited by one of the men involved with the infamous Gunpowder Plot. Opened as a museum in 1974, the building currently demonstrates designs from the Medieval, Tudor and Stuart era. Captivating garden scenery surrounds the house, recreated to match a 17th century style with an ornamental maze and orchard. A car park is located onsite with adequate room for coaches and allocated disabled space. The museum is open to school groups every Monday and Tuesday throughout the year. From Wednesday to Sunday, the museum is free to enter between 1100hrs and 1600hrs, with the exception of a small charge for family events. ON TOUR: RICHARD III & OLD LEICESTER Leicester is known to beckon the avid shopper but when viewed from a historical perspective, it promotes a close affiliation with King Richard III who spent his last remaining days in the city before his death at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. This was to be the final battle of the War of the Roses, with the white rose of York and the last of the Plantagenets fallen to the red

rose of Lancaster, namely Henry Tudor. Victory via conquest on August 22 not only the last English king was to die in battle but also spelled the end of the medieval period. On our visit, Virginia Wright would be our acclaimed blue badge tour guide, with her bubbly nature and keen interest in the subject at hand. Virginia works independently, offering privatised guided tours to pre-booked groups within cathedral hours. Previously, tours would have been held annually on August 22. Following the discovery of King Richard’s bones in September 2012, this date was later extended to weekends.

DID YOU KNOW? For those who admire a more historical setting, Bosworth Battlefield near Sutton Cheney is the famed location of the Battle of Bosworth. The battlefield features a wealth of history, national significance and a strong international interest – the site of the death of King Richard III and the birth of the Tudor dynasty via Henry VII. Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre is a thriving tourist resort, aiming to educate visitors on the discovery of the location. Discounted rates are available for groups starting at just £6 per person for parties of 10 or more. Guided tours must be booked in advance. Call 01455 290429 or visit www.bosworthbattlefield.com

DID YOU KNOW? New Leicester food hall interior

One stop away from Leicester railway station, Melton Mowbray merits as the UK’s Rural Capital of Food. The city is steeped in rural tradition; famous for such fine food and drink as the Melton Mowbray pork pie and a range of locally brewed ales. Groups could choose to visit later in the year as the city plays host to the largest food festival in the region. Markets are erected throughout the year with the upcoming Melton Victorian Market offering traditional craft and marching bands. Make a date in your diary to see the Christmas lights illuminate on December 5. For more details visit www.victorianfayre.co.uk

The food hall sells a range of fresh produce I had little trouble finding the designated meeting spot, despite the fact it was my first time in the city. Stepping just outside the stained structure of the Guildhall on St. Martins West, the location stands mere inches from the dominant setting of Leicester Cathedral. The tour proved more popular than originally anticipated. One of the visitors was with a silver-slicked Canadian chap who spoke fluent Italian. The international demand for heritage tours in the area has undoubtedly grown in scale since the discovery of Richard III bones in late 2012. The initial investigation had been launched on August 25, 2012 by the University of Leicester, Leicester City Council and the Richard III Society, to mark the 527th anniversary of his burial. We were lucky enough to have bypassed the location where he was discovered, with dramatic renovations being made to turn the site into an open plan Visitor Centre, linking to the soon-to-be revamped Cathedral Gardens. A white rose tribute stands clear on the commemorative plate, cemented into the Cathedral’s intimate interior, adjacent to the vibrant Chapel. We were unable to view the statue in Castle Gardens due to intensive restoration work being made in anticipation of the upcoming reinterment. Erected by the Richard III Society in 1980, the bronzed model to depicts Richard raising his crown. Surrounding the statue is a fleet of white roses. The location is open for tours on select days. Bow Bridge plays a crucial role in the tour significance as we embarked across Bow Bridge. It was on this site that Richard III last rode his horse upon arrival into Leicester. Following his defeat, his limp and lifeless body was hung on horseback with wrists tied, as Henry Tudor proceeded to claim the throne. Colourful inscriptions see Richard’s crest displayed on the right and Henry’s crest on the left. Overall, the tour proved highly interesting and informative; focusing intently on discovery instead of regurgitating what has been published in the history books. Though the Tudor reign no doubt appeared to dissolve most elements of truth surrounding the late king, I could still almost vividly visualise the characteristics of the old Leicester village. There is no definitive date as yet, but the re-interment ceremony to be hosted in spring 2015 promises to be a big event. Will your group be visiting? LEICESTER MARKET The city’s market is considered a valuable asset to its vibrant tourism industry,

with the opening of its new food hall cementing its long running reputation as one of the best markets in the country. Other accolades include twice being voted Britain’s Favourite Market, as well as holding the title of Europe’s largest covered market. The 700-year-old attraction saw a new food hall open on Friday May 23 amidst thousands of eager shoppers looking to get a taste. Light and airy, the attraction aims to showcase the high quality of goods on offer, with food ranging from fresh exotic meats and fish to artisan cheeses and other delicatessen produce. The £3.5 million structure boasts a timber ceiling with beams that span the width of the hall, said to be on par with the prestigious Harrods Food Hall in London. Also to be mentioned is Leicester’s Winter Food Festival taking place on Sunday November 16 from 1100hrs to 1700hrs. The events is currently in its sixth year, showcasing top quality food and drink as well as live cooking demonstrations, music and entertainment. It’s no doubt a great way for groups to get into the festive spirit, with a variety of local Christmas crafts sold. n July 2014 l Group Travel World

Kelham Hall and Country Park boasts a prestigious housing estate set within 42 acres of East Midland parkland. A site rich in history, its former standing as a theological college for an Anglican Order of Monks leaves behind a characteristic domed chapel. The venue is highly commended for its large banqueting and business conference facilities, with four spacious interiors suitable for groups. The Dome is the largest of the lot, capable of accommodating parties of 700 within a traditional brick and concrete interior. T: 01636 980000 E: info@kelham-hall.com W: www.kelham-hall.com Here at GTW we love the occasional visit to a world renowned English Heritage site, with Rufford Abbey enticing visitors to view the well preserved remains of an original Cistercian Abbey. Groups can stand witness to an angelic stone urn in detail and embark upon the building’s uniquely decorated entrance, with a stunning view of its botanic gardens. A structure dating from around 1170, it was later restored as part of a 17th century mansion set in Rufford Country Park. The Abbey and Park were acquired by Nottinghamshire County Council in 1952, with a decision made to demolish the north and east wings of the establishment. Of course, it is free to enter with opening times varied throughout the year. Until October, the site will remain open daily between 1000hrs and 1700hrs. GTW would highly recommend visiting as late as possible in the summer season to perhaps enjoy a more romantic setting. ‘The Sherwood Arrow’ service by Stagecoach provides adequate bus access and cycling is permitted via the National Cycle Network. The Abbey can be approached from a designated car park as guests cross over a 19th century Jacobean style bridge to reach their destination. For more information contact 01623 821338.

GETTING AROUND As reported by sister publication CBW in its June 18 issue, Nottingham is set to become the European Electric Bus Capital. A modernised tram system dominates, operated by Nottingham Express Transit (NET) with an aim to provide direct connections to the most iconic tourism attractions in the area, some travelling as far as Hucknall. It is estimated to take less than eight minutes to travel across the town, with Nottingham being branded England’s least car dependent city. An alternative bus service is operated by Nottingham City Transport, departing daily from Nottingham’s Broad Marsh and Victoria Bus Stations. Adequate coach travel is provided by National Express Coaches, who operate a direct route from London Victoria that is estimated to take around 2hrs 45mins. For overseas visitors, a 24 hour service from East Midlands International Airport is available, taking just 55mins to reach the destination. PLACES TO EAT: ANNIE’S BURGER SHACK Annie’s Burger Shack opened in Nottingham in 2009, remaining a fresh destination to include on one’s itinerary. Offering an alternative spin on the popular fast food experience, the restaurant serves up to 30 American-style dishes, with individually selected ales to wash down. All burgers are homemade using locally sourced beef and are served with a side of curly fries, skinny fries or potato wedges. Items featured on the menu can be made vegetarian or vegan friendly upon request, catering to a range of dietary needs. Some burgers are named after well-known icons. The Elvis for example, was inspired by the musician, smothered with peanut butter and raspberry jam. The Johnny Cash features the more traditional vegetable with a sweet hot chilli paste. More traditionally, The Sherwood, dedicated to the local outlaw, has been topped with sautéed broccoli and melted cheese. Additional amounts can be paid for in cash or in £2 Reward Vouchers. Welcone Break’s staff have been briefed to check for uniforms, I.D badges, Job Sheets and passengers. The company advises that these checks are sometimes not easy or perfect, so drivers should make themselves as easy to identify as possible. Drivers are required to complete the Coach Drivers Logging Sheet, which allows Welcome Break to monitor the use of the scheme. Loyalty rewards are also offered, as the company wants to reward coach drivers who bring passengers and therefore potential customers into its service areas. howing at the Theatre Royal, in Nottingham last month was the award-winning smash hit musical Rock of Ages. Set in Los Angeles in the late 1980s, this show will have you getting up out of your seat and dancing the night away. With songs such as Starship’s ‘We Built This City’ and ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ by Foreigner, you’re guaranteed to be singing along throughout the performance with the rest of the audience. The theatre itself is well placed, next to Forman Street, which is packed with cafés and restaurants, many of which offer great pre-theatre dinner menus. It is a small but beautiful venue. We found our seats in the dress circle with ease and discovered that we had, quite possibly, one of the best views of the stage. The seats were comfy, the atmosphere cosy and after stocking up on the essential drinks and sweets from the kiosk (both of which were surprisingly reasonably priced for a theatre) we were ready for the show. The story starts in The Bourbon Room, a bar on Sunset Strip, where you meet workers Lonny and Drew (played by Noel Sullivan, ex Hear’Say). You then meet Dennis, the club’s owner and Sherrie, a “small town girl” who comes to LA to follow her dreams of becoming an actress. Drew manages to persuade Dennis to give Sherrie a job as a waitress. He takes Sherrie www.grouptravelworld.com

035_GTW_July14_Theatre Review.indd 35

on a date, where his nerves get the better of him and in a misunderstanding they end the night as friends. Meanwhile Hertz Klinemann, a German developer and his son Franz, are bribing the Mayor to tear down Sunset Strip and abandon the current rock and roll culture, much to the distress of the Mayor’s city planner Regina. In a bid to save The Bourbon Room from closure, Dennis persuades Stacey Jaxx (Ben Richards), lead singer of Arsenal, a popular rock band about to break up, to play their last gig at the club. The ups and downs of Drew and Sherrie’s friendship take centre stage, as Sherrie proceeds to sleep with Stacey Jaxx in the men’s room. Drew becomes the new lead singer of Arsenal, pursuing his ambitions of becoming a rock star. Their lives take a turn for the worse however, as Sherrie ends up a dancer in the Venus Club and Drew a pizza delivery guy. Meanwhile, Franz and Regina create a love story of their own, as do Lonny and believe it or not... Dennis! I won’t give the ending away, but it’s definitely a musical that should be on your ‘to see’ list. It may not have the same impact as We Will Rock You, but it is both entertaining, funny and full of innuendo. The girl’s costumes in particular had a distinct hint of Rocky Horror to them – all bras, knickers and suspenders. The script certainly had some choice content. I can

see why it’s not recommended for under 11s. Frankly I’m not sure you’d want to take your granny either! Otherwise, it offers everything you’d want from a musical. I’m not normally a rock music fan, yet I still found myself singing along to most of the songs. The finale was excellent. Rock of Ages is the only musical I’ve been to where absolutely everyone was on their feet, either clapping, dancing or both! The Rock of Ages UK Tour runs until November 2014. ■ July 2014 ● Group Travel World

Controversial play opens at the National Theatre Playwright Richard Bean, known for such works as One Man, Two Guvnors, has penned a new play which opened on June 30 at the National Theatre. The play, entitled Great Britain, centres on the intimate relationship between the press, the police and the political establishment, which has been of great interest in the news of late. The play opened without any previews and looks to be performed for a short time before its end on August 23. Its cast includes actress Billie Piper as Paige Britain, an impulsive tabloid news editor, as well as additional cast members such as Robert Glenister, who could be recognised for his famed role on BBC’s long-running television series, Hustle. Associated with a somewhat controversial theme, the opening was delayed as the theatre awaited the phone hacking trial verdict. The play has so far received rave reviews from such publications as The Independent and The Telegraph. Groups looking to book should visit www. nationaltheatre.org

WICKED is to welcome three new cast members from October 27, straight off the back of its UK & Ireland tour. Nikki Davis-Jones will reprise her role as Elphaba, as she replaces current West End cast member Willemijn Veraik. Also joining is Liza Sadovy as Madame Morrible and Philip Childs as Doctor Dillamond. Since its opening at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in September 2006, Wicked has become the 10th longest-running show in the West End.

Cats and Evita to return to the West End The two Andrew Lloyd Webber productions start a limited run later this year at the Palladium and Dominion Theatre Andrew Lloyd Webber is to see two of his renowned 80’s musicals revived at the West End later this year. ‘Cats’ was originally aired in 1981 and is scheduled to run for 12 weeks at the London Palladium. Evita, which originally closed in 1986 after a successful eight year run, is set to perform 55 shows over eight weeks at the Dominion Theatre. In their hey-day, both musicals became long running and mass award winning shows that claimed international success on the stage and will no doubt still prove familiar to many. ‘Cats’ closed more than a decade ago and makes its anticipated comeback in December, with a cast that had yet to be announced when GTW went to press. Evita follows the story of the estranged wife of former Argentinian dictator Juan Peron, perhaps more familiar with its association to the late Madonna film release in 1996. A short revival of the drama was seen in on the west end 2006 and later on Broadway in 2012. From September, the

Cats was wildly successful when it first showed, enjoying multiple awards

upcoming musical is to star Marti Pellow and Madalena Alberto in the key roles of Che and Eva. The news follows the comeback of original 80’s production Miss Saigon, which features the original producer from ‘Cats,’ Cameron Mackintosh. Miss Saigon recently had its booking period extended after highly acclaimed, sell out performances its opening weeks.

through their combined love of music. Keating said in a statement: “I’ve never performed on the West End and this is a huge challenge and commitment. I’m really looking forward to returning to London later this year and completely sinking my teeth into the role.” The production is currently booking at the Phoenix Theatre until July 4, 2015.

RONAN KEATING is set to join the cast of the award winning musical ‘Once.’ On November 17, Keating is to take over the lead role of Guy, an Irish busker who unexpectedly meets and falls in love with a Czech mother

JEEVES AND WOOSTER IN PERFECT NONSENSE has extended its booking period to January 17, 2015. The award winning comedy opened at the Duke of York’s Theatre on November 12, 2013 following previews from October 30.

Of course, this does not bode well with the more contemporary titles struggling to survive on the modern stage as reported in GTW’s May issue, The X Factor inspired musical ‘I Can’t Sing’ failed to triumph after it closed a mere two months into production. Tickets to see Evita are already available to purchase, with tickets to see ‘Cats’ scheduled to go on sale on July 7. Visit www.dominiontheatre. com for more information.

Current cast members include John Gordon Sinclair, James Lance and Robert Goodale who replaced the original cast members in June. ACTRESS TASMIN GREIG is set to make her musical theatre debut at the UK premiere of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which will open at the Playhouse Theatre in January 2015. The show is scheduled to run over 20 weeks and will conclude in May 2015. The narrative is based on the original 1988 film by Pedro Almodovar and saw a brief stint on Broadway in late 2010 to early 2011. Ticket sale dates are yet to be confirmed.

Alistair Brammer Q

She’s great. She’s a responsive actress and a fabulous singer. It makes your job easier when you can trust your opposite, and I really can. She’s only 18 and she’s very, very good.

Q&A

Ticketmaster Groups’ roving reporter Emma Westcott recently got the chance to chat to Alistair Brammer, one of the stars of the West End revival of smash-hit musical, Miss Saigon

You’ve played a number of West End parts, from Marius in Les Mis’ to Billy in Warhorse, how does the part of Chris in Miss Saigon compare with past roles?

A

He’s certainly the coolest guy I’ve ever played. He’s a man; I’ve only really played boys up to now. I’ve worked a lot on my posture to play this part… and my swagger. He’s a soldier and a sergeant. He gives orders and rarely takes them. That’s new for me.

You competed in the TV series Any Dream Will Do, how did you find the Q experience?

A

I can barely remember it. I think I was on screen for about 10 seconds in total, but it introduced me to a producer who gave me my first job. So, I

found the experience extremely helpful I suppose!

you could play any part in any show, would your dream role be? Q Ifwhat A If we’re only talking about shows, then soppy as it sounds, I’d choose this one! I would love to give the Prince of Denmark a go, but so does everyone. I also have in my head that I will play a boxer in something. Not sure why.

And finally, what do you think it is that makes Miss Saigon the perfect night Q out for groups?

A

It’s epic in scale. It’s loud and it’s exciting. It’s a fantastic musical; one that you’ll need to talk about it with someone in the interval. Miss Saigon is now open at the Prince Edward Theatre. Groups 10+ Monday to Thursday evenings and Thursday matinees top price reduced to £49.50 and £45 reduced to £37.50.

It’s been 25 years since Miss Saigon Q played in the West End, what can our readers expect from the show?

A

They can expect a new, exciting version of the show they remember, with some smart new lyrics, modern technical aspects and a new song!

You grew up in Devon, what was your biggest inspiration to make it to the Q West End?

Miss Saigon - Eva Noblezada as Kim and Alistair Brammer as Chris. Photo Michael Le Poer Trench

A

When I was 16 I was involved in Les Mis’ 20th anniversary show in London, from an audition tape sent from my local amateur group. As soon as I stepped onto the Queen’s stage, that was all the inspiration I needed.

How does it feel to be part of a show Q that is so highly anticipated by the UK audience?

A

It’s a huge responsibility. I’ve never seen the show before, so I’m hoping what I am giving them is the most honest version of the story that I can. The buzz is crazy; it’s a good buzz so it’s hugely exciting.

challenges do you face in your new role? Q What A

It’s one hell of a journey that Chris goes on. So, doing his story justice and representing the height of his stakes is the biggest challenge.

Miss Saigon is the powerful love story of two young people, how do you find Q working with Eva Noblezada who plays Kim? 42

elebrating 40 years in the restaurant business, Bella Italia is a pizza chain with a strong Italian influence. Established in the 1970’s, the restaurant has since seen an expansion to more than 90 sites worldwide, specialising in unique pasta, pizza and sharing platters. Though what sets this venue apart is its belief in the ethical sourcing of seafood products, mirroring a dedicated support to sustainable fishing. There are three Bella Italia sites situated near Berkshire. On Queen Victoria Street in Reading, a restaurant is conveniently placed a short walk from Reading Rail Station, where dietary requirements are well catered for within an organic venue setting. Reading Oracle is placed amidst a spacious shopping centre. A large car park is stationed nearby offering a short stroll over a luscious riverside scene. Tables for up to 10 people are available to book at a number of venues via the online booking system. Large parties are recommended to contact the restaurant prior to arrival. A select number of restaurants provide braille and large print menus with step free access to toilets. GTW recommends researching appropriate destinations www.grouptravelworld.com

An important consideration for a Group Travel Organiser is finding an enjoyable spot to stop and eat. From fine dining experiences to sampling some of London’s finest, Amy Moore outlines some of the most group friendly eateries guaranteed to suit any itinerary before making a booking. T: 01189 500592 (Reading) W: www.bellaitalia.co.uk A rather elegant and stylish setting, the Mint Leaf Restaurant and Bar boasts a centralised location in the West End, placed mere minutes from Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. The restaurant serves up a menu of decadent Indian dishes sourced from international ingredients. Considering an area that is well known for its theatre hotspots, the restaurant provides a specialised pre theatre menu for guests. There is a maximum table booking for 20 people online with select menus on hand for larger groups. Dietary requirements are well catered for in a space that has been neatly sectioned by dark walnut panelling, inviting a rather romanticist feel to an

otherwise intimate dining experience. The restaurant can comfortably accommodate up to 220 guests seated or 500 standing. The Jalpur Room can accommodate a further 65 guests seated, or 90 standing for a more upmarket canapés and drinks reception. The room can be easily adapted to suit group requirements. A high tech audio visual system has been installed to attract group business, inclusive of a projector and additional connections for laptop if needed. An evening menu at the bar offers a generous selection of light bites with cocktail master classes on hand for groups of 4+ at a small fee. ‘Taste’ was held at Regent’s Park, London

FOOD FOCUS: TASTE OF LONDON Taste of London’s prestigious opening event was hosted on Wednesday, June 18 at Regent’s Park. Although we got lost trying to find the entrance of the enormous venue, it is conveniently placed an approximate 15 minute walk from the underground tube station. The popular summer event runs for roughly four days throughout the year, with clear skies inviting a rather fancy dress code. Once arrived, the spread proved reminiscent of a World Travel Market (WTM) type affair, with restaurants displayed serving vast international fare. Though I wouldn’t consider myself an avid foodie, the most memorable stalls proved to be Duck & Waffle, which sold a combination of spiced pig’s ears and fried chicken necks. The Mahiki Cocktail Bar provided a unique ‘tiki’ experience with a stand derivative of a more upmarket island destination. A vibrant display of fruit mastery welcomed guests to the Taste of Thailand exhibit, with bold lettering carved into watermelon and the like. GTW was invited on behalf of the Mexican Tourism Board, having received a warm

GTW received a warm welcome from the Mexican Tourism Board introduction by the charming (and patient) Agnish Ray, Senior Account Executive for the MSL Group. This was their first time exhibiting alongside the company, following an announcement made in June 11, 2014. We weaved in and out the maze of stalls to the far end of the complex. The stall presented a somewhat vibrant affair, decorated with multi-coloured bunting and piñatas to match, with an ultimate aim to offer a unique “taste” of Mexico. I was most impressed by the makeshift minibar which had been erected on behalf of Amathus Drinks, a London based drinks specialist selling a variety of tequila based cocktails. We were invited to take part in a tequila and mezcal demonstration; mezcal characteristic of its smoky nature combined with exotic fruit juices native to the country. The surprising discovery of real chillies in a sample of beer gave the liquid that expected Mexican kick. Cooking up cuisine

THE BEGGING BOWL, PECKHAM The Begging Bowl has received an average 4.5 star rating, serving up an ultimate taste of Thai Street Food. Menus are based on a two people share scheme with the restaurant also accepting reservations for eight to 10 people. was London’s Mestizo Restaurant serving a traditional ‘Mole’ an authentic Mexican sauce made from over 30 individual ingredients. On hand was a sweetened chilli and chocolate dish – my favourite of the night – comprising of stringy chicken with a texture similar to that of the popular pulled pork. We were advised that most Mexican families have their own ‘Mole’ recipe. Not a fan of the spicy, we got to sample some internationally sourced guacamole, smooth and creamy with diced onion not appearing too overpowering to the senses. An authentic Mariachi band performed an ensemble later in the evening. The Mexican Tourism Board offers fantastic business opportunities for groups with allocated destinations available to book. See www.visitmexico.com for more information. With a base in London, MSL Group work alongside the Mexican Tourism Board to improve branding and communication. See www.msllondon.com for more information. Taste of London will return on November 20-23, 2014 with an exhibition held at Tobacco Dock. See www. london.tastefestivals.com for more information. n

ursting with culture, this exciting city has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a 13th century fishing village. Today, Amsterdam is known for its carefree culture, pretty network of canals and rich array of museums.

SOAKING UP THE ATMOSPHERE One of the best ways to explore Amsterdam is by canal cruise, with tours in a range of boats offered by various companies around the centre. Opt for a relaxed couple of hours aboard, or if you want to maximise your sightseeing trip, then go for a hop-on hop-off tour. Many of the larger boats are suitable for groups – just be sure to book in advance if there’s a lot of you. Cycling tours are popular, probably because everybody else in the city appears to be on a bicycle! There are lots of local tour operators who can show you around, with some taking you further afield to the countryside surrounding the city. If you choose to rent your own bike, be sure to read up on the rules of the road first. You should, for example, always signal 50

with your hand before turning and never cycle more than two people across. Cycle lanes are spread all over the city and are generally marked with white lines and a bike symbol. To get a good feel for the city, take a wander down Dam Square – the open heart of Amsterdam, overlooked by the Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk Church and War Memorial. Don’t miss the flower market on the Singel or spend an hour or so exploring the city’s three major canals: Prinsengracht, Herengracht and Keizersgracht. Cross the bridge where the Herengracht Canal meets the Reguliersgracht for a gorgeous view of 14 other arched bridges – a particularly romantic spot in the evening when illuminated. Walk through Leiden Square (Leidseplein) in the evening to soak up the vibrant nightlife or visit the few streets of the Red

Light District where, be warned, it is made very obvious what is for sale.

STEP BACK INTO HISTORY Perhaps the most famous attraction in the city is the Anne Frank House – where the famous diary writer and her family hid from German soldiers during World War II. Seeing the Secret Annexe is a very moving and memorable experience. Anyone interested in this subject might also consider visiting the Jewish Historical Museum, housed within four former synagogues, or alternatively the brilliant Dutch Resistance Museum. The National Maritime Museum is set in a beautiful antique building by the quay. Step further back in time with a visit to Our Lord in the Attic – a characteristically 17th century canal house known for its quirky hidden church which was built during the Reformation, when Catholics were www.grouptravelworld.com

Dutch artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Bosch, set the precedent for a rich arts culture in the Netherlands. The highly regarded Rijksmuseum is one place not to be missed. It’s crammed full of masterpieces, such as Vincent van Gogh’s self portrait, with additional furniture and artefacts. The building itself is stunning and was recently refurbished. Fans of Impressionism should call in at Rembrandt House, where the artist lived and worked for 20 years of his life. For more of Van Gogh’s paintings, be sure to spend some time at the Van Gogh Museum, where you’ll find the world’s largest collection of his works. If it’s modern art you like, then the world-famous Stedelijk Museum cannot be beaten. The recently renovated red brick building and its futuristic-looking extension (nicknamed ‘the bathtub’ by locals) features works by Warhol, Kooning, Kandinsky and Picasso. It sits in great company on Museum Square, alongside the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.

brewed on the premises. Those interested could also book in for a brewery tour. Go on a Sunday to enjoy live jazz music. For a wider variety of Dutch beer, the Arendsnest tasting room serves up around 30 draft beers and a further 100 bottled brews from all over the Netherlands. Situated on the canal, this is a lovely spot for a more traditional experience, especially on a sunny day. Organic brewery Brouwerij’t IJ sits beside an old windmill and offers tours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. They produce an amber beer, the double Natte and triple Zatte, as well as some seasonal produce. It has a lovely terrace and makes for a great way to spend a few hours. After all that, you may wish to head to the Reypenaer Cheese Tasting Room. Book in

There’s a glut of culinary delights to be experienced around the city. Beer is a mainstay of the Dutch way of life and there are lots of ways to taste and enjoy it. A popular tourist attraction is the Heineken Experience, located in the Pilsner’s former brewery. Visitors can wander around old brewing apparatus and marvel at the collection of historic artefacts and memorabilia before heading to the tasting room. Microbreweries appear to be springing up in Amsterdam, some of which offer behind-the-scenes tours. On the edge of the Red Light District lies Brouwerij de Prael. For those looking to sample their wares, you can sit at the bar and try small (or large) servings of their beers, all of which are

A NOTE ON COFFEE SHOPS The Netherlands is, of course, well known for its liberal attitude towards cannabis. However, being a controlled substance, with possession and production classified are misdemeanours, prosecution is possible. As you explore Amsterdam, it’s hard to miss the numerous ‘coffee shops’ dotted around. Less streetwise visitors are often confused upon entering such premises. While the staff behind the bar might well serve you a hot drink (and indeed, these venues are said to serve some of the best coffee in the city) anyone not interested in smoking might feel a little uncomfortable, so if you’re looking for a latte then think twice before entering! If it’s a hot chocolate and a sandwich you’re after, then look out for a koffiehuis or a café. Every coffee shop has a clear menu with a wide array of choices, which are usually

52

divided into weed, hash, pre-rolled joints and sometimes “spacecakes” (sweet snacks baked with marijuana in them). The staff take their role very seriously and ensure that their premises are as safe as possible. They offer a huge amount of advice to anyone interested. Although these cannabis-selling shops are not technically legal, the authorities tolerate them. They abide by strict licensing conditions, part of which means they cannot sell alcohol or any other drug. You must be over 18 to enter and the staff may only sell a maximum of five grams to each patron. Strangely, smoking regular tobacco in a coffee shop is not permitted due to the smoking ban! It goes without saying that you should inform your group not to attempt to bring any such substances back with them, as doing so may well result in lengthy delays at ports.

for a one-hour tasting session – suitable for up to 20 people at a time – and be guided through the flavours and aromas of a range of cheeses by a taster expert. On the streets of the city, the markets take centre stage. The Albert Cuyp Market leads the field as the city’s most popular and largest street market in the Netherlands. Held in the heart of the old De Pijp district daily apart from Sundays, you’ll find over 300 stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and chocolate, as well as flowers, plants and a lot more besides. Don’t leave without treating yourself to a freshly cooked syrup waffle. The Noodermarkt is also worth a visit if you’re in town on a Saturday. The flea market is in an idyllic location overlooked by a 17th century church, within the heart of the vibrant Jordaan district. Besides the gifts and clothing, there is a bio-food market with a huge range of products – all of which have been sustainably produced.

COACH ACCESS AND GETTING AROUND Despite being designed around the canal network, Amsterdam’s roads are very good – just expect a huge number of cyclists! The city centre is incredibly compact, making it very easy to walk around. Coaches will find it easiest to park, drop off and pick up at the designated Park & Ride Zeeburg, which is located southwest of the centre. There are great facilities for drivers, just a 10-minute drive from Central Station. Through Amsterdam runs a designated coach route with 25 separate stops at key dropping off and picking up points around the city. There are coach points very close to such attractions as the Van Gogh Museum, Artis Royal Zoo, Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House, Amsterdam Museum and the Rembrandt House Museum. n www.grouptravelworld.com

F

ollowing on from the corporate benefits and rates article which appeared in the June edition of GTW, we visited Bodyflight Bedford, an indoor activity centre ideal for team building and corporate events. Arriving at Bodyflight Bedford, it was clear there is plenty of room for coach parking. Located deep within a business park, it doesn’t seem like the obvious location to jump off a 120ft building. We entered and made our way up to the second floor where the first activity was scheduled for 1130hrs. We were booked in for a two-person virtual driving experience which lasted around 20 minutes. The room was fairly dark and cool to help you concentrate on the track. We were given a quick briefing on how to use the controls and what to expect. Groups can experience an hour’s private booking hire of the Racehouse room, where up to 12 people can race. Also available are three person race experiences, where you race with friends to the finish line. Unfortunately, if you suffer from motion sickness this will be something you may want to skip.

VERTIGO JUMP The next activity, Vertigo Jump, was scheduled for 1200hrs. Located 125ft above ground, the Vertigo Jump is a great way to face your fear of heights. We were in a small group of four, who were taken into the room where the safety equipment is located and given a briefing on safety and equipment by our instructor. The jump is located at the top of the building, so we had to take an old style lift up to a floor where we then climbed a small ladder to the roof. Once on the roof and attached to the safety clips, we walked around the top of the building to the jump spot. A harness was then attached and I was told to position myself close to the line and get ready to jump, either by leaning forward or 54

by stepping over the edge. After 10 minutes of talking myself into it and realising I probably would be more scared going back the way I came, I finally took the plunge. Freefalling for around four seconds felt fantastic, but soon brought back to reality when the harness kicked in and brought me safely back to ground level. There was a member of staff located at the bottom of the jump to ensure I landed correctly. Once standing underneath the jump (still shaking from the adrenaline) you are able to enjoy watching friends take their turn.

CATERING With a small break until the next activity we decided to head up to the restaurant and bar area. There was plenty of room for groups, with spacious seating and tables looking on to the indoor surfing and rock climbing, which is very entertaining to watch. The restaurant serves a selection of traditional hot and cold food such as sandwiches, paninis, chips and jacket

potatoes. The bar serves a selection of juices, spirits and beers to quench your thirst after an adrenaline filled morning. We also browsed the shop, full of branded merchandise, clothes, bikinis, a fantastic selection of flip flops and a bracelet collection.

ROCK CLIMBING The instructor handed us some safety equipment to put on and advised us on the colour coded rocks to climb. Yellow is the easiest route, then green, with red being the hardest. After a few test runs climbing to the top of the wall, our group became competitive, using the clock to time each other. The Climbing Wall has four different stations which we were able to explore in the half hour session.

SURFING The instructor took the group to a quiet room where we were shown a video presentation. He then explained the health www.grouptravelworld.com

We then gathered at the Flowrider to meet the instructor, who gave us a fantastic demonstration of tricks and surfing skills. Two people are allowed on the flowboard at one time, with two types of boards to use, one of which allowed us to experience surfing standing up, while the other was a body board. This session lasted around one hour. For larger groups (maximum 24 people per group) you can privately hire the wave for an hour. This costs just £300 per hour at peak times and £225 during off peak times. For small groups (12 people or less) you can pay per person using the normal adult or kids packages and join a public session.

INDOOR SKYDIVING The Indoor Skydiving was located on the top floor of the building. We were greeted by a large reception area and friendly www.grouptravelworld.com

hile England’s bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup may have fallen flat under what one might call suspicious circumstances, the country is hosting the Rugby World Cup in September and October, 2015, another huge sporting event for which the country has a great deal of heritage. Many famous venues are involved in the tournament and what follows is the lowdown on each and what they can offer groups. Many of these are football grounds, so unfortunately there is more on offer for football fans than rugby fans, but this is nonetheless a chance to see some of the country’s most attractive new stadiums. GTW has listed which matches will be played at each venue, although some qualifying matches were still being played as the magazine went to press.

All but one of England’s progression matches are guaranteed to be played there, no matter what route they take through the tournament or when/if they are knocked out. Twickenham offers more than just top flight

sport and has become a destination for fans around the world to experience the excitement of a match day. Sample the history of a stadium tour, visit the superb World Rugby Museum, take a trip to the Rugby Store or watch some of the biggest names in music perform. A tour of Twickenham Stadium is a fantastic way to discover more about the iconic home of English rugby. Every corner of the venue holds a special piece of history and highly knowledgeable guides will take visitors into the hallowed England dressing room, Royal Box, hospitality suites, medical room and the players’ tunnel. The tour also includes a breathtaking view of the arena from the top of the stand. All guides are experts in their field, providing a truly personal experience, while

It is currently closed for redevelopment into the new home of West Ham United, who are due to take over the stadium in 2016. If you’re looking to organise a group visit to experience one of the match days and are not fussy about who to watch, the Olympic Stadium might be a good bet. It has a high capacity of 54,000 and with many of the teams playing based outside of Western Europe, you have a fairly good chance of getting hold of tickets. A good bet might be the third place playoff, where you’ll get to see two of the top four teams, but ticket availability might still be high since it is not a progression match.

Kingsholm: one of the dedicated rugby stadiums to be used at the tournament Although England is named as the host nation of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, a number of matches will be played at Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium, the home of the Welsh rugby team. Groups can join one of the venue’s experienced tour guides and visit the Press Conference Suite, where the worlds of rugby and journalism meet. They can experience the build up before the match in the Dragon’s Lair, Wales’ team dressing room, and hear the roar of 74,500 fans as they walk down the players’ tunnel towards the pitch. The tour covers the only palletised pitch system and fully retractable roof in the UK, which allows the entire playing surface to be removed to create one of the world’s largest indoor arenas. It’s important to note that the pitch is not always in situ for the purpose of viewing on the stadium tour, especially during the summer months when this area is used for other events. Stadium Tours start at the Cardiff Arms Store/Welsh Rugby Union Store, No.8 Westgate St. (situated between Gates 3 & 4). Tours run Monday to Saturday from 1000 to 1700hrs and from 1000 to1600hrs on Sunday. Like with most stadiums, tours do run on match days or around certain events. Home of Gloucester Rugby, Kingholm is one of the smaller venues to be used at the Rugby World Cup, with a capacity of 16,500. Nonetheless, it does provide a good match day experience. Visitors can dine in the Legends restaurant, enjoying a four course lunch before watching live rugby from some of the best seats in the stadium. During the season, there is an opportunity to meet former and current Gloucester Rugby players and potentially have a player sitting at the same table. Stadium tours are available as part of the package.

SANDY PARK Games Tonga vs Africa 1: Sep 29 Africa 1 vs Georgia: Oct 7 Italy vs Romania: Oct 11 Home of the Exeter Chiefs Rugby Union team, Sandy Park is one of the smaller venues in use at the tournament, with a capacity of 10,744. However, major redevelopment work is taking place over the summer, which could see this capacity double. The stadium’s grand reopening is due to take place on October 2, 2014. The venue has established itself as an award-winning conference and banqueting centre. It has the flexibility to host everything from large exhibition events to smaller more intimate meetings, all within easy reach of the cathedral city of Exeter and the stunning countryside of East Devon and beyond. Sandy Park has a variety of versatile and

dynamic spaces, including the impressive Exeter Suite, which has held host to a number of notable events. The top floor suites, the Chiefs and Estuary, offer striking and unrivalled views of the Sandy Park pitch and stadium and the stunning East Devon countryside. For the smaller more intimate meetings, Sandy Park’s seminar suites all have moveable walls and can enable various configurations and capacities as required. Once the stadium has reopened, one of its first major events is the Autumn Wedding Fair on Sunday, October 19 between 1100 and 1500hrs, showcasing an extensive range of local wedding suppliers. Entry is free to all with a complimentary goody bag for all brides on arrival.

SPORT With this in mind, the stadium is a pretty safe bet if you’re looking to take a group to see a Rugby World Cup match. France vs Canada on October 1, 2015 is the standout choice here, since France will likely be one of the tournament favourites.

BRIGHTON COMMUNITY STADIUM Games South Africa vs Japan: Sep 19 Samoa vs USA: Sep 20 Most commonly known as the Amex Stadium, the attractive home of Brighton & Hove Albion FC is one of the newest venues to host Rugby World Cup games, having been completed in May 2011 at the cost of £93m. The stadium boasts 10 lounges, five concourses and outside space for team building activities. All lounges have state of the art equipment including plasma screens, built-in PA systems and WiFi. These are perfect for a variety of events including conferences, team building days, dinners, graduation ceremonies, corporate receptions, private parties, civil ceremonies and wedding receptions. Also available are 21 executive boxes which seat up to 10 guests and are ideal for board meetings. All facilities are airconditioned, have natural daylight and overlook either the pitch or the South Downs. Stadium tours are also available throughout the year.

ELLAND ROAD Games Italy vs Canada Sep 26 Scotland vs USA Sep 27 The home ground of Leeds United has a sizable capacity of almost 40,000 and is no stranger to rugby, having once housed to Holbeck Rugby Club and Hunslet Hawks. Elland Road is one of only a few stadiums which allow fans behind-the-scenes access on the day of a home game. The Elland Road Stadium Tour takes in all the main places of interest, including the dressing rooms where visitors may even get to see the kit being laid out in readiness for the game ahead. There’s an opportunity to walk up the player’s tunnel and take the managers seat in the dugout too! Matchday Stadium Tours start at 1000hrs prior to a 1500hrs kick off and 1400hrs prior to an evening kick off. Each tour lasts for approximately an hour and a half. Non-Matchday Tours run every Saturday at 1100hrs and Sunday at 1400hrs. An additional tour is also available on Friday afternoons at 1500hrs when there is a weekend fixture.

Another football Premier League venue offering itself to the tournament is Villa Park, the home of Birmingham-based Aston Villa. One of the oldest stadiums in the country, its behind-the-scenes tours combine traditional heritage with state-ofthe-art facilities. Tours take place on selected Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays within the month. While it is a case of ‘tour-only’ during the week, on Sundays visitors can also enjoy a three-course lunch. Tours also run throughout the week during the summer. Group booking discounts and student tours are available and interested parties should call 0800 612 0950 for more details.

WEMBLEY STADIUM Games New Zealand vs Argentina: Sep 20 Ireland vs Romania Sep: 27 The ever impressive Wembley Stadium is the host venue of just two games at the tournament, which is a bit of a shame. It remains to be seen whether the two games have sufficient clout to fill its 90,000 seats. GTW covered Wembley’s stadium tours in our May edition – briefly, they offer 15% discounted rates for groups of 25 or more, with plenty of footballing artefacts to see

LOOKING TO ATTEND? If you’re after tickets for the tournament itself, general sale tickets become available on September 12, 2014, running until September 29. Those familiar with football prices should be pleasantly surprised, with tickets starting at £7 for children and £15 for adults. The issue is demand. Since the tickets, particularly for UK-based teams, are likely to be in high demand, there is no guarantee you will get the tickets you apply for. If more people apply for

tickets than there are tickets available, they will be allocated via ballot. This makes it somewhat tricky to get a group to one of the matches. and behind-the-scenes access. Wembley also offers some very highcapacity rooms for conferences and banqueting. The Bobby Moore Room is Wembley’s grandest space, a room which is 3,480m2 in size and big enough for just about anything. The Great Hall is smaller, but still large enough for any large scale event. The Atrium is an inspiring and versatile space, which allows for flexible configurations of tables and seating in an area that is easily transformed, to allow anything from a theatre style meeting, an exhibition or classroom set up, to a workshop. For more intimate meetings, the Wembley Suite is also available, which has access to a seating area directly outside the suite, right above the player’s tunnel, with stunning views overlooking the pitch.

MANCHESTER CITY STADIUM Games England vs Play-Off Winner: Oct 10 While it is only hosting a single game, this stadium is the only venue other than Twickenham which is guaranteed to host England, making tickets for the match in high demand. By the time the match takes place, a third tier will have been added to the South Stand, improving the total capacity to an impressive 54,000. A second phase of development will follow this, further increasing the capacity to 62,170 after the Rugby World Cup. The venue offers educational tours for schools and groups – a 60 minute journey through the past, present and future of Manchester City, including all the usual behind-the-scenes areas covered by your typical stadium tour, at a 50% reduction from regular tour prices, with one member of staff free for every 10 pupils/students. A number of additional presentations are also offered to groups of up to 30 at a cost of £40, suitable for educational groups of various ages. n July 2014 l Group Travel World

M

yhotel Brighton could easily be mistaken for a more upmarket Ibis, with its vivid exterior boasting a four star class. Anyone who is familiar with the area will know that Brighton is a renowned hotspot for the younger generation, with the hotel situated at the heart of its cultural quarter. A resident pub is directly next door and visitors to the

area will find the iconic Royal Pavilion on the left, should they choose to take a stroll along Jubilee Street. The hotel prides itself as an independent, offering 80 guestrooms derivative of the Chinese design ‘Feng Shui.’ Five years standing, the hotel clearly hasn’t wasted any time in acquiring a strong reputation, with contemporary rooms suited to those staying on business or leisure. Considering the amount of

one way systems in place, driving vehicles around Brighton may seem like a chore. Guests travelling by car should find their journey hassle free, with one of the largest private hotel car parks in the city centre situated immediately below the building, housing approximately 70 spaces exclusive for guests. Spaces are limited, so it is recommended that guests book alongside their room to guarantee availability. For those who missed the boat, a 10% discount on parking at the NCP on Church Street may be offered at reception. The hotel’s superb location entertains a host of restaurants such as Yo! Sushi and Las Iguanas, should one wish to immerse themselves in an authentic international experience. The Chilli Pickle Restaurant is not only phonetically appealing but invites the soothing scent of legitimate Indian cuisine. Privately owned, the rustic restaurant can be viewed through a clear panel overlooked from reception, with guests welcomed by an award-winning menu. It is highly regarded as one of the most authentic Asian

restaurants in Brighton, having been awarded Winner of The British Curry Awards in 2010 for innovation, as well as acquiring a mention in 50 Best UK Curry Houses in The Independent. Due to its growing popularity, it is advised that those wishing to visit on a Saturday evening especially should book at least three weeks in advance. I arrived on a deliciously scorching summer day, having tucked into some potato cakes for the first time, which proved surprisingly sweet with a starchy tang and rubbery texture. “Where Freddie Mercury meets the Maharishi” is how the hotel described itself, with each floor presenting a different coloured spread suited to any attendee. I was welcomed into the hotel lobby by sliding double doors printed with iconic quotes from a host of celebrities, emitting positivity and success. A blob like reception desk welcomed check in, housing friendly and informative staff. I was allocated a superior double room, which maintained an apricot orange and grey theme, with an open plan bathroom which admittedly left little in regards

Those who aren’t so keen could choose to skim through a selection of magazines or guides, detailing the ideal hotspots to visit in the area. I was relieved to visit a hotel with internet access that actually worked. Signing into the hotel’s WiFi proved completely hassle free and I was surfing the net within minutes of arrival. The number of TV channels provided weren’t exactly generous, but acceptable considering guests are encouraged to go out and explore. The gift of a disposable camera was a nice personal touch, with an additional charge to develop. The room also comes inclusive of a fully integrated sound system and eco-friendly toiletries. A miniature recycle bin promotes a strict green initiative, with a shaving kit and toothbrush handy for longer stays. A small vanity kit storing cotton buds, cotton pads and an emery board is convenient, strengthening the hotels’ appeal to a wide audience. couple of complementary cocktails. Aptly named ‘Merkaba’ after the common meditation, the distinctive venue welcomed relaxation, with additional screenings reminiscent of a seaside county. Fresh fish aquariums were available to view amidst timber slated curved walls and rounded furniture. More notably though, the bar staff were extremely welcoming in accommodating our drinks needs, with a stunning presentation of the Strawberry

places to eat: FOODILIC

Without a doubt, Foodilic is one of my favourite restaurants to visit in the high street. With a generous display case of mixed salads and mains, the venue offers an all you can eat buffet at the affordable price of £6.45 or alternatively you can take away for the fixed price of £5. Spinach and mushroom salad with a walnut dressing is on offer to tempt, with a succulent beef bourguignon on the side, tripled with a less exotic pasta salad with a generous serving of pesto. Situated on North Street, around the corner from Churchill Square, the petit restaurant aims to serve food that promotes a healthy lifestyle. GTW would highly recommend a freshly squeezed fruit juice or ice tea as the perfect accompaniment to any meal. Desserts are available for a number dietary requirements, such as sugar free, egg free, flour free and dairy free, should it be required. With a two storey seating area for guests, Foodilic can comfortably cater for larger groups either in the restaurant or at an outside location of choice. It’s well worth a visit.

credible German influence. A guided tour of the hotel by Duty Manager Lukasz was an admirable touch, where we were primarily shown the inexpensive Penthouse Suite, characteristic of its 300 year old carousel, its black tiled steam room and free standing bath, all accessible at around £250 per night. Sunday is the cheapest night to book (as is the norm for any hotel in the area) with all rates dependent on the date of stay. A handful of rooms offer disabled access. Two spacious conference rooms named ‘Mercury’ and ‘Rishi’ are available for use on site, with glacier mints neatly presented in the centre of the table. Both areas provide the ideal destination for business presentations or well-being classes if required. I ended up skipping the continental breakfast in favour of a few minutes extra sleep. If you do choose to have it, it is usually served in the cocktail bar between 0700 and 1000hrs. The opulent comfort of the bed certainly invited a deep sleep, as I awoke to an invitation to sample “Express Checkout” where guests simply have to seal their keys in an envelope ready to drop at reception on the way out, further demonstrating the hotels dedication to customer service. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wishes to stay in the area. n July 2014 l

THE CHRISTMAS MARKET 6 TO 23 DECEMBER 2014

“The Loveliest Castle in the World”

Since its foundation 25 years ago the CTC has become the leading organisation for promoting travel and tourism by coach

A time for celebrating

A

t the Silver Jubilee Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the CTC, the theme was very much about looking to the future and doing more to embrace the web and social media. Chairman Sean Taggart said operators needed to invest more in marketing to raise their profile, particularly online, whilst also driving product innovation to tackle key image challenges. The industry needed to communicate better and focus on addressing perceived negatives such as lack of freedom on tour, concerns about travelling with traditional coach passengers, being given a second class service at venues and the stigma of coaches being cheap. In his report, CTC Chief Executive Chris Wales told members the organisation had had a busy year, with more than a dozen events including the annual Coach Holiday Conference in Chester, which had been the best yet with another record attendance.

Attendees at the Silver Jubilee Annual General Meeting The CTC had organised and promoted a variety of fam trips and additional member events. Coach Tourism faced challenging times, which meant having to work extra hard to retain members while also attracting new ones. He gave a special vote of thanks to the CTC’s six Partners, who had

helped provide the CTC with a stronger financial platform. He was especially grateful to Best of Britain & Ireland/ Expo Management, Towergate Chapman Stevens, Encore Tickets and Condor Ferries, for remaining as partners for 2014 and he welcomed CalMac Ferries and DFDS Seaways as new

New Board In annual elections to the Board, retiring directors Alun Jones of Jones Holidays, Richard Hill of Coaches Etc and Stuart Render of Expo Management, were all reelected unopposed for a further three year term, while Stuart Duddy of DFDS Seaways and Graham Hopcraft of Condor Ferries were co-opted to the Board for the next year. Thanks goes to Amanda Harrington of Bakers Dolphin, who due to work commitments chose to step down from the Board.

partners for this year. We increasingly rely on research for travel statistics, tourism insights and holiday trends and in her presentation to members, Jane Darragh from VisitEngland gave a fascinating insight into the leisure and tourism market, with research into what the future holds for domestic tourism. Publicity surrounding the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta in 2015 has received a boost this month, with the Prime Minister David Cameron ordering that all school pupils be taught about the ‘British Values’ enshrined in the charter. There are hundreds of events and celebrations being planned across Britain to mark the occasion, with opportunities for coach operators, hotels and attractions to develop Magna Carta Trails. Mark Gill, Executive Director of the Magna Carta Trust, outlined the opportunities in an excellent presentation to the AGM. Links to these presentations can be found at www.coachtourismcouncil.co.uk

being organised by Alan Lloyd and generously hosted by Shire Hotels at the Kettering Park Hotel in Northamptonshire on Sunday 3 August. The evening will start with pre dinner

drinks followed by a BBQ with wine and a disco. A Sunday afternoon fam trip to nearby Boughton House & Garden and Rockingham Castle has also been arranged.

We are improving our communications with members by moving into the modern world of social media, by adding CTC Facebook and Twitter links. This will enable us to promote what we are doing in a more immediate fashion, but also allows members to promote their news. In particular, we hope suppliers will use this as a medium to tell buyers and other members what they are doing. UKINBOUND NEWS By Amy O’Donovan, Commercial and Events Manager, UKinbound

Lovely Liverpool

Football fever A

t the start of June, we hosted a Discover Liverpool Workshop. My colleague Flavia Messina and I took advantage of the event being held on a Monday and spent the weekend there. The sun was shining as we arrived into Liverpool Lime Street. We checked into Hatters Hostels, which is a beautiful building. We had a really nice room, thanks to Vicky Simpson. After, we headed off from the hostel to do some exploring; our first stop was lunch. As it was a glorious day, we had sangria and tapas in the sunshine at La Tasca. We then walked around Liverpool One, which was dangerous for two women who like to shop. We hit Albert Dock, where we enjoyed a drink on a roof top bar above the Mersey Ferries building, across from the Liver Building. That night, we enjoyed time in the town and danced with some serious moves! On the Sunday morning, we discovered the beautiful gardens of the Bluecoat, where we enjoyed breakfast. It is a creative hub for people to meet, talk, perform and enjoy themselves. It was a real gem finding this relaxing garden, which provided us with an ideal location to enjoy the morning. We checked into the Nadler Hotel Liverpool, formally base2stay. The hotel hosted UKinbound and our tour operator members on the Sunday. We had really nice, spacious rooms, as well as a welcome drink in the evening. We held the B2B session at Jurys Inn at Albert Dock. It was a great event with lots of local suppliers, including Hard Days Night Hotel, Liverpool FC and, of course, Visit Liverpool. After a busy morning of www.grouptravelworld.com

appointments, we enjoyed a delicious Spanish lunch at La Vina (it is becoming apparent that I love Spanish food). Thanks to Elisa and her team for this tasty lunch. It was off to explore Liverpool with a trip on Mersey Ferries, then the Beatles Story, followed by an evening at the Tate Liverpool. Overall, Liverpool treated us very well and I have no doubt that we will return.

Rita Beckwith, Chairman and Deirdre Wells CEO of UKinbound with our special guest Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP Between Liverpool and Summer Ball, we had time to do a breakfast briefing on Cultural Heritage at Cafe Rouge, Irving Street. Thanks to Tragus for providing the venue. It was another scrumptious breakfast and we had great speakers provoking interesting questions about how the UK market lives up the Cultural Heritage expectation of visitors. I also enjoyed the Jersey Boys at the Piccadilly Theatre. It is a really great show. I didn’t think I’d know a lot of the songs, but turns out I did!

Our Summer Ball was held on June 18 at Chelsea FC, where we had over 350 guests join us for an evening of networking and fun, as guests were welcomed by samba dancers and a lovely glass of bubbly. Colin Nell, professional football freestyler, wowed us with his skills and Brazilian drummers encouraged guests to get in the party mood. While Chelsea FC provided a scrumptious three-course dinner, we were joined by the Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP. He addressed the crowd and praised the tourism industry for our work to date, stating that the government is fully supportive of our industry. After dinner, we drew raffle prizes in aid of Just a Charity and raised a total of £2,600. Thanks to all who contributed. Following that, we partied with City Academy dancers, with Ministry of Sound providing the music. It was a great evening and we hope that all who joined us enjoyed it as much as we did. ■

GTO GRAPEVINE

5 of the best: wash bags Lipault Travelproof bathroom cabinet

£32.00

Clear travel bags

One of the more basic products to suit simpler budgets, with only one colour to choose from (clear with black rim). Three sizes accommodate essential toiletries and/ or make-up, with each model comfortable to carry as hand luggage. Ideal for quickly and easily locating products, its water resistant base discards unwanted snags and more importantly saves time on bag checks at terminals. Having received a handful of positive reviews on its website for good quality and value, the product perhaps sways more towards the beauty spectrum, offering limited space to the avid traveller.

Each model measures approximately 29cm in length, with an additional hook installation that allows functionality as a hanging toiletry bag. It is capable of housing a stock of products and is most suitably tailored to store cosmetics The gloss effect nylon coating is derivative of a luxury item available at an affordable price. ‘Lipault’ branding has been plastered on the secure zip fastening and embellished on the leather lid. The multitude of compartments provided upon purchase will no doubt prove useful; inclusive of a zippered mesh pocket and five individual bottle straps. A carry handle has been attached on side for carefree transport, ready to order in black or navy with a darkened exterior.

The item can be folded flat to approximately half its hanging size depending on contents, allowing ease of packing and transport. A spacious interior aids in the organisation of toiletries, inclusive of four clear plastic pockets so items can be viewed without the need to rummage. A secure fastening mechanism helps to hold items in place during travel, with splash proof pockets installed to control leakage. The larger sized model boasts a built in, detachable mirror and hook to hang. The bag has also been constructed from highly water resistant materials. “Cabinet” is merely a hint at the amount of space this product has to offer.

Each product has been specially crafted from cement bags, adding animal friendly to Fikay Fashion’s vast resume. A donation of choice is detailed upon ordering, with an aim to support the craftspeople of Cambodia. The item is highly recommended for camping especially, although it may struggle to provide water resistance due to its recycled nature. Every product is unique, offering expandable storage with a secure clip fastening and meshed interior. A larger wash bag is available to purchase in a number of different designs including Red Cobra, Brown Camel and Blue Eagle.

An overall unisex appearance makes it adequate for an array of travelling consumers; complete with six individual pouches, two separate zip pockets and three sections built into the expandable lid. Think that’s impressive? A detachable pouch has also been added, which comfortably doubles as a cosmetics bag. The main compartment is cushioned, having been constructed from a hardwearing polyester fabric, adding ease to comfort. www.jack-wolfskin. co.uk

INTERVIEW

Personal

Robert James was acting GTO from April 1969 to December 2012, where he organized holiday’s abroad and day trips for NHS staff, whilst working as a Hospital Fire Safety Advisor for several NHS Trusts in Southern England. Passionate about organising travel and delighting in arranging staff events, Robert has come into contact with thousands of staff, with the NHS said to be the biggest employer in Europe. Following his retirement, Robert became a member of the GTOA, Meridian Branch, where he continues to organise group trips for Care Staff What do you think makes a good group trip? There must be a varied itinerary with options to enable the group, on occasion, to split up into sections. This takes into account people with different physical capabilities and preferences. The area has to be fully researched by the GTO beforehand to ensure a good awareness of customs, traditions, dress codes and more importantly, the travel distance and times between the airport and hotel. A gala dinner or similar event is a great way to enhance a trip and ensure it is a successful group holiday.

Describe the best group trip you’ve been on and why? Taking 30 staff to Thailand; seven days in Bangkok and seven in Pattaya. Pre-loaded into the itinerary were several treats I had negotiated with the tour operator. These included a fantastic gala dinner at a great Bangkok seafood restaurant and an evening trip to see the Bangkok Lady Boys Show, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Everyone got along with and loved the locals, especially at our favourite bar in Pattaya. There were tears all round when we said our goodbyes. 74

● July 2014

Describe the worst group trip you’ve been on and why? This year, I endeavoured to organise a group cruise but it turned out to be a no show event. I arranged a cruise through the excellent and very helpful groups department of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. They’d put a lot of work into it and as it turned out, not one person went firm on the booking. Several people got cold feet, so I had to hit it on the head. One of the joys of doing GTO work.

What’s your favourite UK destination for a group day out? It has to be Portsmouth, The Maritime City. It’s got everything and is easily reached by road and rail. Portsmouth has more museums than any other city in the UK. Take a stroll around old Portsmouth to see many monuments, such as the place where the first convicts were shipped to Australia. Or ascend Spinnaker Tower and enjoy tea and cakes amidst 360-degree panoramic views.

everyone with sun hats badged with “Magic of the Orient Tour 1997.” They also got a 25-litre capacity rucksack each. I used to always pack a compass, but nowadays smart phones have them embedded. Another item I religiously pack is my pocket diary, with listings of all essential phone numbers and details of the British Embassy/British Consulate. Together with my Pocket Medical and First Aid Guide, which lists symptoms, treatments and emergency procedures.

What do you always leave out? This is a difficult one. It is a good idea to have plenty of slack in your suitcase and backpack to enable you to bring back some spices, local delicacies and presents. I take a few best garments with me and the rest of the old stuff can be discarded to make space. I very often ditch pants, vests, shirts and trousers.

What do you always pack?

What was your favourite group trip last year?

Certainly medicine, such as Paracetamol and Imodium. On the Thailand trip, I presented
