ho can believe that February is already upon us? GTW has a packed diary of events including the UKinbound Annual Convention in Leicester (12-13) and the CTC Coach Holiday Conference at the Hilton Reading (49). Previous attended events include the GTOA’s first National AGM/Networking Event in 2015, held at the Marriott Hotel Northampton. You can read the report on page (76). The GTOA have appointed their first CEO. Read who received the role on page (10). Looking ahead to March, GTW has included a Best of Britain & Ireland (BOBI) preview to accompany an extensive eurozone feature. In light of our Weekends Away/Short Breaks segment, GTW would like to turn its readers’ attention towards the trend of luxury ‘glamping.’ As reported in GTW’s December edition, upcoming travel trends are expected to target the more ‘cost-conscious’ and ‘style seeking’ consumer. With the rain currently pouring outside the office, it seems perfectly apt to travel in something a little more robust, with the campervan an ideal alternative. I’m typically drawn to the bohemian style of the VW Camper Van, with the more modern Mercedes-Benz Vito mimicking the demand for freedom and comfort. The mobile model (pictured) has the capability to transform into a spacious

sleeping quarter, fitting four adults and one child. For groups wishing to touch ground, why not stay at the Safehouse Hostel in Cardiff (7)? It has been reported that Britain’s tourism boom is set to continue in 2015, with overseas visitors expected to spend close to £1billion more compared to 2014. VisitBritain predicts that inbound tourism will rise by 4.5%. Culture Secretary, RT Hon Sajid Javid MP, said: “The tourism sector is driving economic growth for Britain. The Olympic Games and Diamond Jubilee gave us a great platform to showcase the best of Britain, but we didn’t stop there. Britain has so much to offer tourists with our stunning countryside, great heritage and world class sport and culture. Working closely with the tourism industry, we will continue to champion the UK abroad as part of our long term economic plan.” Our theatre supplement is rich with reviews – featuring The Play That Goes Wrong (36) and Cirque Du Soleil’s KOOZA at the Royal Albert Hall (44). Turn to page (68) for an exclusive interview with Desmond Payne, Master Distiller at Beefeater Gin; conducted as part of our Brewery and Distillery Tours feature. We’re currently looking ahead to our London Supplement in April 2015. If you’re interested in contributing, please get in touch. Amy Moore – Features Writer February 2015 ● Group Travel World

Celebrating Oxford’s finest Historic and modern day television combine as Oxford promotes two of its most famous features – its 1,000-year-old castle and Inspector Morse Oxford Castle Unlocked has partnered with Experience Oxfordshire to launch a special joint ticket that offers visitors the chance to enjoy a guided tour of the city’s 1,000-year-old castle prison, before following in the footsteps of the city’s most celebrated TV detective, Inspector Morse. Michael Speight, General Manager at Oxford Castle Unlocked, said: “Combining the fictional detective stories that the public know and love with a real-life prison experience at Oxford Castle Unlocked was an unmissable opportunity, which I’m sure visitors to the city will delight in.”

Oxford Castle Unlocked offers a 40-minute guided tour with a costumed character from the castle’s history, exploring the Saxon stone-built St George’s Tower, the atmospheric crypt, the preserved prison wing and the archaic manmade mound. The Inspector Morse Tour is a two-hour long walking tour of Oxford, taking in the scenes of the best-known cases of Inspector Morse and his successor Lewis – both created by Oxford author, Colin Dexter. Groups can benefit from the discounted joint ticket price of £19 for adults, £17.50 for concessions and £13.50 for children. Tickets can be bought direct from Oxford Visitor Information Centre on Broad Street or online at www. visitoxfordandoxfordshire. com.

All aboard for a Royal day out The Royal Yacht Britannia is celebrating its busiest month ever after record visitor numbers in December 2014 saw more than 12,000 people climb aboard the Edinburgh-based attraction. The vessel has travelled 1,087,623 nautical miles during its regal career, calling at more than 600 ports in 135 countries and has now retired from carrying members of the Royal family and dignitaries – including Sir Winston Churchill – around the world. It is situated in Edinburgh’s historic Port of Leith. The Royal Yacht Britannia has become an iconic visitor attraction, giving guests a fascinating insight into the Queen’s former floating palace and into the lives of those who lived and worked on board. Bob Downie, Chief Executive at The Royal Yacht Britannia, said: “We’re delighted to have recorded our highest December visitor numbers ever, with our ranking as the UK’s No 1 Attraction (in the 2014 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards) and Scotland’s Best Visitor Attraction a key factor to

this success.” The Royal Yacht Britannia attracts around 300,000 people from across the world every year and boasts the world’s most-translated audio tour, which is available in 27 languages, in addition to a children’s tour and a British Sign Language (BSL) tablet tour. One of the UK’s most accessible tourism destinations – with access to all five decks of the ship – there is also a waiter service tea room on board, as well as a gift shop. The majority of the items displayed are originals, kindly on loan from the Royal Collection and other contributors. The route is fully accessible, with lifts and ramps throughout. Tickets cost from £14 for adults, with group prices available for parties of 15 or more. Parking is free and an audio handset guide is included in the admission price. Call 0131 555 8800 or email groups@tryb.co.uk for more on ticket prices and group visits. For more information see www. royalyachtbritannia.co.uk.

Boutique Hostel opens in Cardiff A unique luxury hostel has opened its doors in the centre of Cardiff after receiving a £30,000 loan from Finance Wales. The first of its kind in the city, the Safehouse Hostel is a high-end boutique accommodation venue situated on Cardiff’s famous Westgate Street, which runs next to the Millennium Stadium. Having already invested their own funds into the business – as well as securing several coinvestors – owners Daniel Wimpleberg and Tom Hughes used the Finance Wales loan to cover marketing costs in preparation for the hostel’s official opening last month. “The Safehouse Hostel has a very clear idea behind it,” says Daniel. “We want to meet the needs of the independent travellers who come through Cardiff, while providing a luxurious and social atmosphere in which they can meet like-minded people. Affordable doesn’t have to mean budget and our research has shown there’s a gap in the

Tom Hughes (left) and Daniel Wimpleburg, with Kelly Jones of Finance Wales market for accommodation that offers a high level of service. “We are in a prime location – being so close to the city centre and the stadium – and we expect to be very busy with the upcoming Six Nations rugby matches, especially as we’re already fully booked for the Word Cup in October.” Situated in a stunning Victorian-listed building, the hostel has shared bedrooms, private bedrooms and a deluxe room available. The accommodation intends to gain five-star status within the first 18 months, which will make it the second five-star hostel in Wales. February 2015 ● Group Travel World

He will take up his new role at the UKinbound Annual Convention in Leicester on Wednesday, February 11, 2015. 2015 has seen a great start to the year for UKinbound. We held an English Heritage Cities Workshop in the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich in January 2015. This event came about through our recent partnership with VisitEngland. There are so many wonderful places around the country where we would like to hold our regional Discover Workshops, so we decided to hold this type of event in London – to show the cities involved just how great our workshops can be. English Heritage Cities is made up of Bath, Cambridge, Carlisle, Chester, Durham, Greenwich, Lancaster, Lincoln, Oxford, Shakespeare’s England and York. We invited our tour operator members, with each city represented by their destination and three of their suppliers. A big thanks has to Visit Greenwich in sourcing us the wonderful historic venue, the Old Royal Naval College, as

Deidre Wells OBE, CEO at UKinbound it was a perfectly apt setting. Thanks to our other member, Thames Clippers, for providing complimentary transportation to all attendees. he Midlands isn’t known as the Heart of England without reason. Firstly, it’s slap bang in the middle of the country – as its name suggests. Secondly, copious amounts of English soul and British culture have their roots in the region. From steam engine pioneers and scientists to literary game changers such as William Shakespeare, the people of the Midlands have helped to define England for centuries. To this day, the history, variety and natural beauty of this area make it a mighty fine place to visit.

BIRMINGHAM & THE WEST MIDLANDS

Birmingham holds court over the Midlands. Having been through major redevelopment over the past few years, it’s a city with a new lease of life. Make the magnificent Staffordshire Hoard your first port of call. Thousands of Anglo Saxon gold and silver pieces make up this famous find – the largest ever uncovered – where visitors can view hundreds of the finest items at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, alongside many other artefacts from that era. There’s much more to discover here, with collections covering seven centuries of art and history. The museum charges a flat rate of £55 per group, valid for up www.grouptravelworld.com

Holly Cave provides interesting itinerary ideas for a group trip to the Midlands to 25 people. Groups can choose from a Highlights of the Pre-Raphaelites or Treasures of the Museum tour. A coach drop-off point is available. There are more modern treasures to discover here, too. Wander through the Jewellery Quarter to find the historic heart of this now very modern city. The area features four museums, 200 listed buildings, dozens of jewellers and a vast array of art galleries. Aside from the great shopping and dining that Birmingham has to offer, there’s some fascinating history worth exploring here. The National Trust care for the last remaining section of Back to Backs – an evocative courtyard of houses built literally back-to-back, which date back to 1840. Already immaculately restored, the site will re-open on February 15 after further conservation work. Access is by guided tour only and it’s essential to book in advance.

Experience the feeling of diving into a pot of melted Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate in the attraction’s new ‘4D Chocolate Adventure’ zone and walk through a full scale replica of Bull Street, where John Cadbury opened his first shop in 1824. There are special discounted entry rates for groups of 15, offered alongside free coach parking, with admission and a complimentary meal for one driver included. Group organisers of 20 or more will also receive free admission. In Dudley, to the northwest of Birmingham, you’ll find the Black Country Museum. This 26acre, open-air attraction recreates the feel of the Industrial Revolution through costumed characters, original shops and authentic everyday scenes. Group bookings of more than 15 can benefit from discounted admission and guidebooks, free coach parking and free admission for group leaders and Blue Badge Guides. Organisers can also arrange a personal guide or introductory talk, with side trips available along the Dudley Canal or into the Limestone Mine. Those entering or leaving the city from the south might consider calling in at Winterbourne House and Garden. This rare example of an early 20th century villa was once home to industrialist John Nettlefold, and now welcomes visitors

every day of the week for an invaluable insight into Edwardian life. Groups can enjoy a bespoke guided tour or simply explore the house and garden at their leisure.

WORCESTERSHIRE’S SCENERY & STEAM

This much-loved county has often been named the best place to live in the UK and it’s certainly full of scenic spots. Worcester itself is a wonderful place to spend the day. Many groups start their visit at Worcester Cathedral, rising grandly from the banks of the River Severn. Founded in 680, it’s often cited as one of the country’s most beautiful buildings. Entry is free. Groups may wish explore on their own or alternatively, pre-book a historical tour of their choice. The Malvern Hills rise around and once you’re on them, you’ll have brilliant views stretching for miles across Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Groups in need of an activity could undertake the Spy Mission Trail – a circular driving trail around the north of the region, estimated to take around two or three hours. Alternatively, take your time and cycle the route. Setting out from Great Malvern, you’ll stop at five places to figure out the clues. The trail guide can be downloaded, ordered or personalised from treasuretrails.co.uk. The Severn Valley Railway is a highlight

of the county for many. Skirting the Severn, this glorious and original steam railway runs for 16miles from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth. The trains run from May until October. At the Engine House Visitor Centre there are eight full-size steam locomotives plus other exhibits, including a King George VI Royal Saloon and a Travelling Post Office. You could include a visit to Shrewsbury in Shropshire – the birthplace and childhood home of naturalist, Charles Darwin. Travelling as a pre-booked group of 15 or more acquires a generous discount off ticket prices, reserved seats all together and a group travel organiser will help with your booking. There are several special events held on weekends throughout the year.

SHROPSHIRE’S INDUSTRIAL PAST & REGENCY JEWELS

The Severn Valley Railway reaches into Shropshire, grinding to a halt at the end of the line in Bridgnorth. En route, you’ll pass over the grand Victoria Bridge spanning the river below. This attractive market town is also home

to the Cliff Railway – Britain’s oldest and steepest inland electric funicular railway. Ride the track to the top for a fantastic view and a stroll around the castle gardens. More history beckons in Shropshire, with the town of Ironbridge a UNESCO World Heritage Site – named because it is home to the world’s first bridge made from iron. Ten excellent museums can be found along the Ironbridge Gorge, including the Coalport China Museum, where bone china was made. The former factory displays original china works from the area and offers regular, hands-on workshops and demonstrations through a range of traditional techniques. A 45-minute drive from Ironbridge is the attractive town of Ludlow. After an hour or two working up an appetite, hit the Ludlow Food Centre. This unusual attraction features food stalls, open kitchens and tasting areas where local produce – such as cheese, sausages, jams, pickle, ice-cream, freshly roasted coffee and bread – is prepared and served to visitors. There are also lots of lovely boutiques selling homewares and gifts. Why not walk it all off with a turn around Attingham Park, a National Trust site situated near Shrewsbury dating from 1785? In November, January and February, the Regency-era mansion is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, when guided tours escort visitors through its elegant interior. Otherwise, simply wander around the surrounding deer park and walled garden.

WARWICKSHIRE’S CASTLES & GARDENS

Warwick Castle is a Midlands must-see. This 1,100-year-old motte-and-bailey castle is regularly voted one of Britain’s best by its many visitors. A visit to the ancient site wouldn’t be complete without watching the summer jousting tournaments, observing the magnificent birds of prey in action or gazing in amazement as the world’s largest trebuchet launches a fireball. Groups of more than 10 receive up to 40% off entry prices, with special 45-minute tours through the Gate House, Barbican, State Rooms and Great Hall available at £5 per person. The spectacular ruins of Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden is one of the largest historic attractions in the West Midlands. These walls were once home to Robert Dudley, the great love of Queen Elizabeth I. The attraction offers a 15% discount for groups of 11 or more visitors paying together, plus free entry for the coach driver and tour leader. You could add a guided tour of the Elizabeth Garden restoration project and

REGIONAL FOCUS // THE MIDLANDS wrap things up with refreshments in the Tea Room, where you can have a cream tea ready and waiting. Warwickshire is also home to the historic town of Stratford-upon-Avon, made famous for its idyllic riverside setting and the legacy of one of its most famous townsfolk, William Shakespeare. Join the other 4.9million who flock here every year to see the main sites, including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the church where the Bard was baptised and buried, and the five Shakespeare Houses – Anne Hathaway’s Cottage & Gardens, Hall’s Croft, Harvard House, Mary Arden’s Farm and Shakespeare’s Birthplace. Motoring enthusiasts will insist on calling in at the Heritage Motor Centre. Home to the world’s largest collection of historic British cars, visitors can uncover the story of the British motor industry through fun and interactive exhibitions. Somewhat surprisingly, this attraction does an excellent job of catering to families and children, who will really enjoy a day out here thanks to the dedicated kids’ activities on offer, such as play areas and electric go-karts. The Land Rover Experience appeals to all. Strap yourselves in and enjoy being driven around an off-road track. The centre offers discounted entry for pre-booked groups of 12 or more, along with a private guided tour, organiser and driver benefits and there’s plenty of free parking for coaches and cars.

Staff at the Black Country Living Museum recreate the industrial revolution and a range of benefits. The Dorothy Clive Garden is a delightful mix of formal and informal garden greenery with some unusual features, and is popular for its tearoom that offers a great range of lunches. Trentham Gardens are part of the wider Trentham Estate and there are wilder areas to explore, as well as the more formal Italian Garden. Beyond the main estate, the Monkey Forest is an ape safari park. Share your walk with monkeys, who will often swing through the branches above you or perhaps join your journey along the path. 140 Barbary macaques live freely in the forest. Groups of 20 or more receive discounted entry, the organiser and coach driver get in for free, there’s free on-site coach parking and no booking is required. If your group is after something with a high-octane kick, then Staffordshire is the place to be. The county is home to fantastic theme parks, Drayton Manor and Alton Towers Resort. Highlights of

Ireland

Holly Cave suggests attractions worth visiting within the Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

Celtic heritage is alive and well in this beautiful part of the British Isles. With a holiday here, you can expect plenty of laughs, toe-tapping tunes and some awe-inspiring sights.

DUBLIN

It’s the quintessential destination for many of the seven million people visiting Ireland every year. Although a relatively compact city, the country’s capital is the largest urban area and is packed full of attractions, great eating and drinking options, and an often raucous nightlife scene. Start with a stroll along the River Liffey, where numerous low bridges dot the banks. Cross the famous Victorian Ha’penny Bridge and wander down the cobbled lanes of Temple Bar, lined with drinking dens, street performers and musicians. Take one of the many walking or bus tours available in the city to find out more about its history, from Viking

raids to its tricky emergence from British occupation. Enjoy a picnic in leafy Phoenix Park in the warmer months, credited as one of the biggest inner city parks in the world. Must-see spots include Dublin Castle, which dates from 1204 AD. Rebuilt nearly every century since, the buildings here are still very much in use with the State Apartments, Undercroft, Chapel Royal, Craft Shop, Heritage Centre and Restaurant open to the public. Groups must book in advance and can select from a range of guided tours. A short walk eastwards will bring you to Trinity College. This working university allows visitors inside for tours to explore the Old Library where the Book of Kells is held – famous for pulling Europe out of the Dark Ages. Groups of more than 10 can receive discounted entry, though the site does not take advance bookings. There is also a guided tour, providing an insight into the site’s history and current activities.

ROCK OF CASHEL

This fairy tale-like collection of medieval buildings can be spotted from a distance when gazing out across the Plain of Tipperary from their limestone plateau. The unique, ecclesiastical centre thrived during the time of Saint Patrick and features a 12th century round tower, High Cross and Romanesque Chapel, 13th century Gothic cathedral, 15th century castle and the restored Hall of the Vicars Choral. Guided tours are available upon request and groups must pre-book.

CORK & KINSALE

The charming town of Cork – situated towards the south of the country – makes for a picturesque and interesting tour stop. Book a visit to Blarney Castle to accompany the millions of pilgrims who have travelled here to kiss the Blarney Stone, which is alleged to endow the kisser with great eloquence. Groups are advised to get in touch with the attraction in advance. A 30-minute drive away is the smaller township of Kinsale, known as Ireland’s gastronomic capital. Set on the Bandon Estuary, the seafood served here is fresh and delicious. In milder weather, water sports such as sailing, boat trips to scout for whales and dolphins and to admire the cliff scenery, are very popular. The historic Charles Fort overlooks the pretty harbour. Its star-

DINGLE & KILLARNEY

Tucked away in the southwest of Ireland, the wild beauty of this region is entrancing 28

and steeped in Gaelic culture. The lakes and forests of Killarney National Park are popular for outdoor pursuits, such as hiking and biking. A short walk from the Killarney brings you to the pretty Torc Waterfall and surrounding footpaths. On the Dingle Peninsula, head to Slea Head and Inch Beach for some of the area’s best panoramic views. Slea Head Drive is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque roads in the country. The village of Dingle is a great place to enjoy impromptu traditional music performances and some genuine Irish ‘craic.’ At the tip of the peninsula is the Great Blasket Centre – a heritage attraction that offers an intimate look at the language, literature and daily life of a traditional Gaelic Blasket community. The evocative site details the remote community’s struggle for existence until it was sadly abandoned in 1953.

CLIFFS OF MOHER

This dramatic stretch of County Clare coastline is another highlight of the Irish wilderness. Standing more than 200-metres high, the cliffs stand against the Atlantic Ocean’s crashing waves that reach more than eight kilometres. There are three main viewing platforms, one of which is also the location of O’Brien’s Tower. On a clear day, it’s possible to see Galway Bay and the Aran Islands. From the south platform, visitors can spy on the resident puffins and other seabirds that call the cliffs their home. Smaller groups of 15 or fewer can pre-book a guided nature walk, accompanied by one of the Rangers.

NORTHERN IRELAND

Many visitors to the Emerald Isle still stick to the Republic, underestimating the appeal of Northern Ireland. But tourism here is on the up and visitors might find themselves surprised by the beauty, culture and attractions featured in this part of the United Kingdom.

BELFAST

A very different city to Dublin, Belfast lies a two hour drive away. The small city of Newry makes the perfect stop between the two. It is the perfect jumping off point for exploring the Mountains of Mourne, a magical landscape said to have inspired C. S. Lewis to write the Chronicles of Narnia. Stylish shopping abounds beneath Belfast’s Victoria Square, CastleCourt and the House of Fraser. The entertainment and nightlife scene is great fun, with lots of live music venues, trendy bars and plenty of great hotels available. It was in these Belfast dockyards that the Titanic was designed and built, a piece of history recounted in the recognisable Titanic Belfast exhibition. The distinctive, modernist building opened on March 31, 2012, just in time for the centenary of the ship’s construction, and is part of a massive regeneration project of the area – turning it into the Titanic Quarter. The museum’s huge structure encloses nine galleries of interactive exhibition space, including the underwater exploration theatre, recreations of the ship’s cabins, temporary exhibitions and a special effects

DERRY

Derry is Northern Ireland’s second largest city, boasting its own fair share of charms. Many visitors are intrigued by the turbulent history of this place. Walking tours often focus on 1972’s infamous Bloody Sunday, visiting the political murals of Shankill and Falls Road before leading groups along the historic 17th century walls, which offer the best views of the city. The Tower Museum is a popular calling point within the walls. the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. A drop off and pick-up point for coaches is located a two-minute walk away.

ANTRIM COAST

From Derry, the Causeway Coastal Route traces the most photogenic sights of the Antrim coastline. The area is home to the natural sight of the Giant’s Causeway, consisting of 40,000 basalt columns edging into the sea, left by volcanic eruptions occurring over 60 million years ago. Northern Ireland’s only World Heritage Site has a fantastic Visitor Centre, with coastal

walks and bird watching on offer. Special rates apply for groups of more than 15. It’s worth spending around two to three hours here. An audio guide is included in the entrance fee, but guided tours can be booked at extra cost. The Old Bushmills Distillery in the small village of Bushmills is predictably popular. Whisky has been brewed here since 1784, making it the oldest working distillery in Ireland. Fascinating guided tours take visitors through the active whiskymaking process. Groups of 15 or more can book in advance and qualify for special rates. Knock back some Irish courage and teeter your way across the scenic rope bridge to Carrick-a-Rede Island.

ARMAGH

With its acclaimed Christian heritage, it’s also considered to be the spiritual capital, acting as the seat of both the Church of Ireland and Catholic Archbishops. Ireland’s patron saint - St. Patrick - is said to be buried in the nearby town of Downpatrick, with the cathedrals and churches in Armagh honouring him. St. Patrick founded the church on the Hill of Armagh, where the modest Church of Ireland Cathedral now stands. Two large marble archbishops gaze out across the town from the opposite hillside. They guard the much more dramatic, twinspired Catholic Cathedral. n

Othello Returns to the stage Shakespeare’s Othello hits the West End, with the tragic tale featuring a 21st century twist Shakespeare’s brutal thriller-tragedy Othello has returned to the London stage via theatre group Frantic Assembly, who aim to re-tell this timeless story of paranoia, jealousy, sex and murder – set against the backdrop of Yorkshire during the race riots of 2001. The

riots were a time of terrible division and unexpected alliances, with the play telling the story of how Othello’s passionate affair with Desdemona leaves him open to jealousy and attack, with devastating consequences. Mark Ebulue (a former kickboxer) plays Othello, while Steven Miller (best known as Lenny Lyons in BBC drama Casualty) plays Iago, with Kirsty Oswald as Desdemona. The cast also includes Leila

Crerar and Richard JamesNeale, who reprise their roles from the original 2008 production as Emilia and Roderigo. The role of Cassio is played by Ryan Fletcher, who previously performed with Frantic Assembly in Beautiful Burnout, while Montano is played by Dritan Kastrati – a graduate of Frantic Assembly’s Ignition programme set up to train young actors. Directed by Scott Graham, Othello is a coproduction with Theatre Royal Plymouth and is now showing at the Lyric Hammersmith following a successful UK tour. Due to some violent scenes, the production isn’t suitable for children. For ticket information visit www. lyric.co.uk

by Madani Younis (Bush Theatre). The Royale explores the transcendence of sporting heroes as cultural icons. The production is set in 1905 during the racially segregated world of boxing, where Jay ‘The Sport’ Jackson dreams of becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Madani Younis commented: “I am delighted to bring The Royale to UK audiences, an ambitious play from a new

and (as yet) unheard American voice. I am fascinated by the tale of a sporting hero who transcends his industry and becomes a major symbol in wider culture. “I think the play will really speak to a British audience where we think of today’s cultural heroes and the responsibilities that are thrust upon them by society.” For more information visit www.bushtheatre.co.uk or call 020 8743 5050.

REVIEW

T

he Play That Goes Wrong premiered at the Duchess Theatre in September 2014, with an increase in popularity boosted by a highly effective advertising campaign. The title doesn’t do the production justice – The Play That Goes Wrong – which narrates a memorably manic murder mystery set in the 1920s. The Play That Goes Wrong is guaranteed to put a smile on your face, with a gag-after-gag mentality perfectly performed by members of the Mischief Theatre, mirroring as The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society. The production follows the charmingly chaotic cast as the stage transforms from being fully set to rubble ruins, with one cast member even branding it a ‘deathtrap.’ Awarded Best New Comedy by whatsonstage.com shortly after its release, The Play That Goes Wrong is the epitome of modern theatre. The production technically started before all audience members were seated, with improvisation initiating the hunt for a lost dog, primarily engaging an accompanying school group. The crowd proceeded to cheer on the cast throughout, omitting a rather pantomime-esque appeal. In this respect, I assume every performance is different. The dashing Director opened the show with a somewhat unintentional stand up routine, which wasn’t laughout-loud funny but smirkworthy nonetheless. The Play That Goes Wrong hardly seems scripted, with a witty combination of naff special effects that ensures audience members are instantly hooked. Every character is as clumsy 36

hands and swirling her hips seductively. Mr Cecil Haversham is well-played by David Hearn, straight-laced and smartly dressed, who amusingly

breaks character by frequently acknowledging the audience with a broad grin. The sturdy two-tier set is impressively multifunctional, with two behind-the-scene cast members working hard to mimic the illusion to chaos. Each act is perfectly complimented by mackintoshstyle ceiling lights, which draws the audience’s attention to the timid technician perched on a specially constructed stairwell overlooking the set. The play-within-a-play must have seen an estimated 300 guests attend the viewing on January 14, 2015 at 1930hrs. The Duchess Theatre is an intimate venue located opposite such long-running shows as Mamma Mia at the Novello Theatre and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane. Peter Pan Goes Wrong is a similar spin-off of the successful West End production, currently touring to July 2015 (see full listings on page 42). Additionally, Lights, Camera, Improvise sees exclusive performances on March 2, 2015, and April 7, 2015, where cast members from The Play That Goes Wrong construct a wholly improvised production based on audience suggestions. To book call 0844 482 9672 or reserve seats online at www. tickets.nimaxtheatres.com. The Play That Goes Wrong is currently booking to September 2015. irque Du Soleil celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2014, prancing into 2015 with the premiere of KOOZA – held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Tuesday, January 6. KOOZA derives from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘magical box’ and unleashes a vibrant display of white knuckle acrobatics creatively combined with colourful circus theatrics. The Royal Albert Hall is a prestigious venue situated in South Kensington, where guests are more than likely to rub shoulders with (celeb) royalty. Cirque Du Soleil is renowned worldwide for its eccentric

Highwire had most audience members on edge

style, with KOOZA seeing the troupe’s return to London following a successful sold-out season in 2013. KOOZA has been written and directed by David Shiner, who began his ‘clowning’ career as a street mime in Paris – which accounts for the production’s classical comedic charm. Each ‘clowning’ act was almost reminiscent of my annual childhood visits to Zippos Circus, with audience members immersed in intricate costume designs accredited to Marie-Chantale Vaillancourt. Ringside is the ideal

position to observe acts above, though views were often restricted on ground level with various acrobats occupying the wings. There was always something to keep audience members entertained as 15 minutes prior to the performance, a loud ‘tourist’ began lobbing popcorn whilst a cop chased a crook. KOOZA featured a somewhat lighthearted introduction before the interval, with live music complimenting the instrumental ambience on stage. An interchangeable hydraulic platform – almost like a palace – was shrouded in sheer curtains that soaked up the light. The cylindrical platform housed six musicians playing a variety of orchestral instruments, accompanied by

two live singers who added to the overall multicultural vibe. KOOZA is intentionally left open for interpretation, with segmented acts contributing to an overall sentimental/ melancholic narrative. KOOZA is almost childlike in exploring both psychological and philosophical themes through ‘The Innocent.’ Effective strobe and flash lighting erupted on the highly interactive stage and I was amazed at how well the aged structure supported the hefty props. Most shocking were the more physical tasking acts such as Contortion, where a trio of women boxed over one another like stacked chairs. Balancing on Chairs also evoked a couple of gasps from the audience as a muscular male straddled the 23-foot tower supported by a pedestal. High Wire, Solo Trapeze and the aptly named Wheel of Death added suspense, with The Teeterboard prevailing as acrobats balancing on single and double metal stilts launched themselves high into the air. KOOZA is scheduled to run at the Royal Albert Hall until February 19, 2015. For more information about Cirque du Soleil visit www. cirquedusoleil.com. Discounted rates are available for groups of 12+ 20+ and 50+. To book call 00800 1548 0000 or email groupsales@cirquedusoleil.com. wo of the most important and significant anniversaries in British history take place in 2015. It’s been 800 years since the sealing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede and 200 years since the Battle of Waterloo. CTC member – the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead – will highlight these two anniversaries by showcasing one of England’s finest ornamental gardens and woodland on a familarisation trip ahead of the 2015 Coach Holiday Conference, held at the Hilton Reading from February 22-23. The basis of freedom and democracy in many countries and the ‘greatest constitutional document of all times’ – the Magna Carta – was sealed by King John in the riverside meadows of Runnymede, just a couple of miles from Windsor Castle. The trip includes a Blue Badge guided tour of the National Trust site at Runnymede to discover more about the history of the Magna Carta and its links with Royal Windsor, which will be celebrated in June with a spectacular river pageant. The group will then visit Savill Garden and its 35-acres of finest ornamental gardens and woodland. This popular year-round group destination

Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens - Sowing the seeds of inspiration PRICE: £16.99 l CONTACT: 01733 296910 l Email: info@hudsons-media.co.uk Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens celebrates its 28th anniversary in 2015, boasting a comprehensive guide to historic properties that are open for public viewing. Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens is an annual heritage guide to Britain, available to purchase in high street bookshops and heritage attraction stores nationwide. Hudson’s bulky 2015 edition is very much picture-led, featuring a voyeuristic, arms-length view of some of the most renowned historical sites in the UK. Hudson’s features a strikingly sublime image of The Alnwick Garden at its plotted peak on front with Alnwick Castle on back, ensuring it remains on trend following the prestigious attraction’s most recent publicity (see GTW January 2015). Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens is 426 pages in total, proving a useful aide to GTW’s ‘English Country Gardens’ feature. From a group perspective, Hudson’s provides subtle inspiration for itinerary ideas with a

‘visitor information’ tab highlighting the available capacity at each attraction, accompanied by a list of upcoming events to tailor your tour. 2D QR codes at the bottom of each panel provides further information on different platforms, perhaps accounting for the occasional blank space that makes the guide appear somewhat unfinished. With a detailed foreword by publisher Sarah Greenwood, Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens commences with a slideshow outlining ‘what’s new’ throughout 2015, complimented by the frequent injection of travel writing, which adds a personalised aspect to an otherwise informative guide. Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens proceeds to print attractions consistently separated by region, including London, Yorkshire & The Humber and Northern Ireland. Extensive editorial content is topped off with a number of maps for reference, which makes the supplement ideal for large coach journeys in particular; though there is perhaps little in regards to coaching

information. The weight of the product appears perfectly balanced in consideration to flicking through and/or remaining on page, with the advertising to editorial to picture ratio amounting in a successful, well-constructed piece, supported by interviews with some key industry figures that make the supplement feel more like a bookazine. Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens’ glossy finish engulfs readers in that pleasant ‘new book’ smell and is guaranteed to prove a hit with heritage/history buffs. At first glance, I’d say the guide is suited to a much older demographic, but deeper reading suggests a more family-orientated, wider target audience that is rather tricky to pin down. Regardless, Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens is certainly worth its £16.99 price tag. Hudson’s Media is a leading publisher of heritage and tourist information in the UK. Further information is available online at www. hudsonsheritage.com.

HUDSON’S LAUNCHES THREE UNIQUE SHORT BREAKS Hudson’s is scheduled to launch three unique short breaks in summer 2015, including tours to Rutland, Derbyshire and Yorkshire. Each break will include a number of stately homes such as Burghley House, Haddon Hall and Kedleston, in addition to lesserknown country villages such as Deene Park and Tissington. There will be the option to book a short weekend break or combine two tours to make it a weeklong adventure. ALE & LAGER

Shepherd Neame has introduced a themed brewery tour and tasting package to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. Shepherd Neame is an independent, family-run brewery based in Faversham, housing over 400 years of history. An original copy of the Magna Carta was discovered in Faversham in 2011. The Magna Carta was signed in 1215 in Runnymede and to celebrate, the document will be placed on public display in 2015. Shepherd Neame’s guided tour will commence in the Visitor Centre, which is a beautifully restored medieval hall house. Groups will be accompanied by an expert guide to discover more about the history of beer, which has been produced in Faversham for over 850 years. The tour will also include a tutored tasting, offering visitors the chance to sample a variety of beers, including a special commemorative ale brewed for the occasion. Lunch will be provided before embarking to the Magna Carta Rediscovered exhibition, where groups receive priority to view Faversham’s original Charter. interview:

DESMOND PAYNE Master Distiller at BEEFEATER GIN

B

eefeater Gin Distillery is located in Kennington, London, having moved from its original Chelsea roots. Created by James Burrough, the London Dry Gin recipe remains unchanged since the 1800s. Yeoman Warders inspired the name of the quintessentially British brand. Produced in the capital since its invention, visitors to Beefeater Gin Distillery will get a glimpse at how the world’s most awarded gin is produced. Desmond Payne educated GTW on the key components of Beefeater Gin and provided more information on what visiting groups can expect.

WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INVOLVE? I’m very fortunate that I am involved from the very beginning of the process – from assessing the quality of our botanicals to judging cocktail competitions. I’m the Master Distiller at Beefeater, but a lot of what my job entails is more public related. 68

The Beefeater Gin Distillery on Montford Place

HOW DID YOU REACH YOUR PRESENT POSITION?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU ASSUMED THE ROLE? I’ve been at Beefeater since 1995 – that’s 20 years this year. Before that I was with Plymouth Gin. We were part of the same group. I’ve been making gin for 47 years.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO GIN IN PARTICULAR? I started off in the wine trade. That was my passion. I worked in Harrods’ wine cellar for a while, learning about bottling and labelling. I later joined a

helped me to taste properly – and smell – which is far more important. It really developed my sense of taste, which applies very much to gin.

company who were wine merchants. They also owned a gin distillery in South East London. As part of my training, I spent time in the gin distillery and it just fascinated me. It was such an interesting experience, with all the herbs and spices and botanicals. I still like wine, I still drink wine, but gin is what I do.

HOW DID THE ENVIRONMENT COMPARE? My experience with wine really

I worked my way up from a Management Trainee and when the Master Distiller of Beefeater was retiring, they offered me the job. With wine and gin, it was fascinating to explore all the different flavours. Gin – compared to other spirits – is a very complex drink. Gin can come from anything you like. It must contain juniper, but beyond that, you can use any botanical. It gives a huge expanse of opportunity.

HAVE YOU EXPERIEMENTED WITH ANY DIFFERENT CONCOCTIONS? My job is to make Beefeater Gin to the recipe and to the same quality and style. In my office, opposite my desk is hanging a portrait of James Burrough – the founder of Beefeater. He is watching to make sure I don’t change his recipe. In the last www.grouptravelworld.com

Beefeater is the most awarded gin in international competitions – certainly over the last ten years six years I’ve made six new gins, which says something about how gin is such a popular spirit.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN TESTING? Juniper grows wild, so there is no real control over it. We assess each batch and blend them, so we can recreate the Beefeater style each year. It’s a balance of flavours, and if you get one of them wrong, you suddenly throw it out of balance. It’s about being consistent all the way through. If you’re making a brand like Beefeater, people expect it to taste the same all around the world.

WHAT CRITERIA DOES BEEFEATER GIN HAVE TO MEET? Our association with the bartenders around the world is very important. I’m very much aware as a gin distiller that what I make is not the way that anybody drinks it. Gin is nearly almost always drunk with something else. People are increasingly developing new cocktails and No computers are involved in the distilling process

new combinations of styles by combining fashionable flavours. If they’ve got a good quality, versatile gin to work with, then that helps.

The Beefeater’s Visitor Centre opened in March 2014

WHAT’S CHARACTERISTIC ABOUT BEEFEATER GIN? It should be a harmonious balance of flavours. When we put our botanicals into the pure alcohol, we leave it to marinate for 24 hours before distilling and that really integrates the flavours. Beefeater is the most awarded gin in international competitions – certainly over the last ten years.

HOW DOES BEEFEATER GIN COMPARE TO OTHER PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET? For a long time, we were the only gin brand that was still made in London, but now there are four or five. The challenge for them is to get a well balance gin that the bartenders can work with. It’s tempting to choose an ingredient or flavour that nobody else has used, but it has to work along with everything else.

WHAT’S THE ENVIRONMENT LIKE ON A DISTILLING DAY? We’re distilling five days a week. Beefeater is a big brand of gin – it’s more than 21/2million cases and more than 30million bottles – all made here in the distillery. There are five people here and they are constantly checking and checking and checking. Towards the end of the distillation, those flavours become slightly stewed, so we make a cut. There are no computers aiding us in this process, its very much handson by a small team of people.

Gin’s key ingredient is juniper

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN GROUP TOURS? We’ve always had trade visitors coming round the distillery. In March 2014, we opened a Visitor Centre, which I was very much involved in. It tells the fantastic story of early distilling in London, and tells the story of the Beefeater brand. I don’t do the tours, but I trained all the guides. In terms of group visits compared to ordinary visitors, it’s the same experience. We’re getting increasing numbers coming

www.grouptravelworld.com

064_069_GTW_Feb15_Breweries & Distilleries.indd 69

through. Partly aided by the fact that at the end of the tour, they get a Beefeater gin and tonic.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM A DISTILLERY TOUR? The first part of the tour is self-guided. You can take an iPad and delve into far more information. People take anything from 20 minutes to an hour completing that. Upstairs, there is a huge glass ceiling where visitors will see all the botanicals – from juniper berries to orange peel – to really understand where the flavours and aromas come from. Above, through a glass ceiling, you can see the equipment working. We’re not a museum; we’re a working distillery. We’re central. Within a mile is the Imperial War Museum and Tate Britain, so it’s quite accessible.

Beefeater Gin Distillery is open between 1000hrs to 1800hrs Monday to Saturday. Online booking is recommended. For more information visit www. beefeatergin.com

Q&A with John Sharman

- CEO of Tuxedo Money Solutions Tell me more about Tuxedo Money Solutions. Tuxedo Money Solutions is Europe’s leading payment technology companies, delivering a broad range of innovative payment solutions for businesses operating in the UK and abroad. We offer a comprehensive range of awardwinning prepaid card products and services, in addition to electronic payment solutions for corporates. Tuxedo Money Solutions benefits over 800 companies, from SME’s with only a few thousand customers to large corporations, such as Tesco and the AA who have several million customers. Partnerships are the cornerstone of the business. We work closely with clients to provide payment technology and card solutions to match clients’ individual requirements by offering bespoke solutions, whether they be targeted at improving brand recognition, driving customer loyalty, maximising revenue, generating cost savings or reaching new market segments. We have continued to substantially invest in our market leading technology – the eccount® platform – which has been developed in-house and underpins all of our payment solutions in the UK and abroad. eccount® is an incredibly versatile and flexible platform that provides Tuxedo Money Solutions with a real competitive edge.

What products do you offer group travel organisers heading abroad? Tuxedo Money Solutions offers a variety of payment solutions, including an own-branded or white label travel and expense (T&E) solution that is widely used across a range of sectors – from luxury yachts to haulage to manufacturing and entertainment. This simple prepaid card solution offers clients cost effective and highly efficient ways of managing overseas expenditure. There 74

John Sharman is CEO at Tuxedo Money Solutions, one of Europe’s leading payment technology companies with extensive experience in the delivery of prepaid card programmes and innovative payment technology solutions

are many benefits to utilising prepaid cards for travel and expenses. T&E cards can significantly lower expenseprocessing costs compared to corporate credit cards or employee spend and reimburse systems, providing robust visibility of spending. For those travelling overseas, it reduces the FX charges that are often imposed when using debit or credit cards. One simple-to-use system – the eccount® – underpins all of our T&E cards. We currently offer two variants, a single eccount® to fund all cards and an enterprise eccount® for departmental funding and budgeting. The single eccount® is ideal for smaller expense set-ups, providing a simple

Group Travel World l February 2015

074_075_GTW_Feb15_Insider Insight.indd 74

and efficient expense process. The business loads funds into a single holding account and transfers funds onto the cards individually. We typically recommend this solution to organisations requiring less than 50 cards. The enterprise eccount® is suitable for companies with more complex expense set-ups, as it supports large volumes of cards and has multiple tiers to enable departmental budgeting, reporting and administration.

What are the advantages of pre-paid currency cards for group travel organisers and operators in managing travel expenses? First and foremost, pre-paid T&E cards offer an extremely cost effective alternative to corporate credit cards and expense reimbursement. Typically, the use of a pre-paid solution can help group travel organisers and operators cut their expense processing costs through the reduction in time spent reconciling receipts and expenses. In addition, the solution also provides up-to-date visibility of all expenditure by individual cardholders, allowing a more informed decision process when managing and allocating budgets. Pre-paid solutions also provide better security for employees travelling overseas by removing the need for them to handle large sums of cash. Loading the card in sterling, it can then be used globally wherever MasterCard® is accepted – in store, online and at ATMs. Both solutions work the same way and are very simple to administer and use. The eccount® is loaded with funds from a travel company’s bank account. These funds can then be instantly transferred to each of the travel and expense cards provided to employees. If there are any funds left remaining on the cards, these can then be transferred back

to the eccount® for use at a later date. Those overseeing the financial processes of the business will receive full transactional statements for each of the cards and are able to view balances online in real time, making it much easier to manage overall budgets. From a cardholder’s perspective, the cards operate in exactly the same way as any other MasterCard® or Visa®, but they can only spend what is loaded onto the card. We are currently in an exciting phase of development. In addition to expanding our range of payment solutions into new sectors (such as low cost cross-border payments), we are growing internationally. We now have operational centres in Chester, London and Melbourne, Australia. Early 2015 will see further expansion into Germany, Dubai and America and we have a roadmap of new countries where we plan to launch. Not only does this growth enable us to support clients with domestic programmes in these countries, but also firmly positions Tuxedo Money Solutions as a programme manager that can support multi-national organisations with global operations.

So, what lies ahead for various travel companies and organisers? There is an undoubtable opportunity for the industry to review how they currently manage expenses and international payroll, with prepaid solutions offering a compelling alternative to improve efficiency and drive down costs. With this in mind, we believe that restrictive, single solution programmes will increasingly become a thing of the past as travel companies look for more flexible payment solution providers who favour a partnership approach, where the needs of the distributing partner are made a priority. n www.grouptravelworld.com

GTOA AGM/ Networking Event January 17-18, 2015 Marriott Hotel Northampton GTW spent the weekend in Northampton courtesy of the Group Travel Organisers Association (GTOA) for the first AGM/Networking Event of 2015, which took place at the Marriott Hotel Northampton. Using a less direct mode of transport, GTW hopped aboard the X4 Stagecoach Gold from Peterborough Bus Station, with a 2hr 30minute journey passing such scenic destinations as Oundle, Corby and Kettering. Unbeknownst, Northampton

had a newly renovated rail station, opened one week prior to arrival on January 12, 2015. The Marriott Hotel Northampton is perhaps a little difficult to reach via public transport, but is ideal for coach tour access, located three miles from Junction 15 on the M1, with complimentary tea and coffee offered upon arrival. GTW were allocated a deluxe double room, with personal touches including a petit block of Thornton’s chocolate embellished with the word ‘welcome.’ Dinner in the

A full house at the GTOA National AGM in Northampton Delapre Room was certainly a delight, with the informal fish and chip supper transformed into a tantalizing ‘Taste of Britain’ spread, with delicacies served from each branch region. The Marriott Hotel Northampton has 17 meeting

picked up/dropped off at the entrance to Palm Court, with GTW arriving around 1030hrs. The pace picked up towards the afternoon, with lots of familiar faces attending. Most memorable was the Melton Mowbray stand, serving starchy brews from the Belvoir Brewery, where GTW enjoyed a tour last year. WHAT’S THE BEST GROUP TRIP YOU’VE BEEN ON AND WHY? One group trip that stands out is a three-week holiday my husband Gordon and I took some years ago. Gordon had always wanted to have a “DIY” holiday, so we took off for a tour of the Baltic’s using local trains and buses. It was an interesting experience, but not without problems. It gave us the idea to take a group from the Warwickshire Federation of WI’s with husbands and friends – with whom I have been organizing day trips and holidays for over 30 years. We hired a coach from Johnsons Coaches in Henley-in-Arden, which would accompany us the whole holiday. Conferring with Regent Travel of Bristol (experts on the Baltic’s) and with our own knowledge, we arranged a holiday that involved taking the coach on ferries and cargo boats, whilst the rest of the group traveled by air and met up with the coach the following day. Some of the places we visited had only just become aware of the tourism trade, so we were comparatively unspoiled and allowed to enjoy the pleasures of various countries in their ‘natural’ state. We had the added pleasure of dealing with different local currencies - Lits in Lithuania, Lats in Latvia, Kroons in Estonia, Krona in Sweden and the Euro in Finland. One memorable drive between

l February 2015

countries, we spied a collection of buildings on the horizon across barren countryside. We diverted and after several miles, our driver pulled up outside the clubhouse of a small aerodrome. The members welcomed us with open arms, served us drinks and toured outside, near where many Russian helicopters and fighter planes lay rusting. The locals were friendly, helpful and somewhat amazed to meet a group of English people traveling in an English coach. At one hotel, the porter came out to collect the luggage and exclaimed, “The steering wheel is on the wrong side!” We explained that we were from England to which he replied, “We have never had an English coach, they all come from Germany.”

WHAT’S THE WORST GROUP TRIP YOU HAVE BEEN ON AND WHY? I’ve had a couple of worrying experiences, like the time a lady went missing in Caen, and unbeknown to me she had Dementia. The driver and I went round the town in opposite directions and eventually found her. Another time, I had to leave a lady behind because she had her bag stolen. It contained all her money, cards, medication and passport. We were due to depart to another country the next morning. I was unable to sort out the passport, as the Embassy was closed until Monday morning. I booked her into the hotel for another night and arranged a train (once she had obtained a temporary

passport) so she could cross the border to meet up with us again.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A GOOD GROUP EXPERIENCE? Good advance planning and knowledge. Knowing what your group members like and ensuring that they arrive fully armed with itinerary, maps and details about places visited on the trip. Making sure that you stop at places of interest to break up a long journey and ensuring on the way home when everyone is feeling a bit down - that there are plenty of quizzes and fun and interesting prizes. WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS PACK? Several black marker pens, sticky labels and safety pins. The latter for labelling items bought on holiday that are stored in the luggage hold, to prevent anyone from claiming the wrong item. This is especially important if we have visited a vineyard. WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS LEAVE OUT? My umbrella. I’m an eternal optimist. WHAT WAS YOUR MOST RECENT GROUP TRIP? I also run a theatre outings group. We went to the Malvern Theatre before Christmas to see the pantomime Aladdin starring Robert Powell. This is an annual trip. I am also in the process of planning two trips - one to Melton Mowbray and another to Shrewsbury. n www.grouptravelworld.com
