Alnwick Castle features in the 2014 Downton Abbey Christmas Special. SEAN ELLIOTT PHOTOGRAPHY
I
f my calculations are correct, this edition should arrive around Christmas Day. I hope you’re all taking some well-deserved time off and enjoying the latest instalment of television specials. Pictured is Alnwick Castle that features in the 2014 Downton Abbey Christmas Special. Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the UK. Included in our upcoming events segment, Alnwick Castle will introduce a brand new Downton Abbey exhibition in 2015, with a group exclusive Downtown Abbey Tour of the State Rooms. For more information see page (6). Turn to page (8) for more on Bowood House & Gardens, which is a must see in 2015 as it seeks to celebrate its 40th anniversary year. English Heritage introduces our extensive Historic Attractions & Gardens feature by examining some of their most magnificent and historical sites (18). You can read the full article on pages (20) to (27). Shrewsbury is a real treat for great lovers of the outdoors. You can see our coverage of a recent familiarisation trip to the region on page (14) where GTW enjoyed an informative walking tour from Martin Wood – the tall town crier. Readers could also win a family ticket to ride with Sabrina Boat Tours (76). I would
highly recommend hopping aboard and tracing the River Severn, which loops round this quaint Shropshire town. I’m anticipating a return visit later this year. Skip to page (51) for more information regarding upcoming exhibitions, including snippets on Elvis at the O2: The Exhibition Of His Life – the largest exhibition of its kind in Europe – and Audrey Hepburn: Portraits Of An Icon, held at the National Portrait Gallery until October 2015. The National Portrait Gallery has a generous group offering for those interested in visiting. Bletchley Park is a truly magnificent historical site – the renowned ‘Home of the Codebreakers’ – that recently launched an exhibition dedicated to the release of The Imitation Game (2014), which was filmed on location. In regards to accommodation, readers could visit page (70) for GTW’s verdict on the prestigious Prince Rupert Hotel which features in our acclaimed Best of the Best column. GTW is anticipating an exciting year ahead, with an already jam-packed January issue. Recently launched is our Transport Travel Club package – flick to page (12) for more details. Ruby the Asian lioness will star in ZSL London Zoo’s ‘Land of the Lions’ exhibit Meet Ruby, the stunning Asian lioness who is currently on holiday while her new £5.2 million home is built at ZSL London Zoo. Land of the Lions, which will open in spring 2016, has been designed with the help of zookeepers and conservationists, to ensure the animals’ every need is met. Ruby is part of the zoo’s breeding group of endangered Asiatic lions, with only 400 remaining
in the wild. Their plight has sparked Lions400 – the Zoological Society of London’s fundraising campaign – to support its international projects to protect wild Asiatic lions in the Gir Forest in India. With such a tiny population remaining in such a small pocket of forest, Asiatic lions are particularly vulnerable to the threats of disease and conflict with humans, with ZSL working alongside the Gujarat government and the Wildlife Institute of India to safeguard the future of these majestic creatures.
Giving millions of people the chance to get up close, visitors to Land of the Lions will be able to see how closely humans and lions live in the Gir Forest, coming face-to-face with the breathtaking big cats in the 360° lions’ den. It is hoped their new home will encourage Ruby and her pride to breed and help secure the future of this beautiful species, as well as educate and inspire visitors who come to see her. Transport Travel Club’s Launch

Jade Smith surfs the new Transport Travel Club website, which provides unique offers to individuals and companies within the transport industry A brand new private travel club was launched at the Euro Bus Expo in Birmingham on November 4-6. Transport Travel Club has been designed to reward people and companies in the transport industry with access to unique discounted travel and leisure opportunities. Everyone in the industry is invited to benefit by joining at www.
transporttravelclub.com. There are countless websites open to the public offering large discounts on travel and leisure activities. The truth is that these rarely offer the best discounts available. People within the transport industry have the opportunity to join the Transport Travel Club. The members-only club provides access to privately negotiated prices for travel and leisure experiences that might otherwise be considered unaffordable. Transport Travel Club members are able to log in online and access heavily
discounted travel and leisure opportunities such as entry tickets to theme parks, holiday packages, cruises and hotels, which can be used to take both family and friends. Transport Travel Club also offers a corporate membership viable for companies with more than five employees. Visitors to Euro Bus Expo were able to pick up a promotional leaflet from the Coach & Bus Week stand, where they could obtain a 50% discount off the current £15.95 membership fee. This leaflet is still valid for those who possess it. Several companies have already registered all their employees, who are now enjoying the vast array of discounts available. The website is incredibly easy to use. After completing the sign-up process and logging in, the full website is available to browse.
The private status of the Transport Travel Club ensures that the best prices are offered to members. This is why a small annual charge is required – it helps to cover administrative costs and ensures the offers remain exclusive to both members and people within the transport industry. Users shouldn’t feel intimidated by the array of details required when signing up – they are simply to ensure members are emailed content that is interesting and relevant to them.
This feature also allows members to be contacted with exclusive offers based on their choices or location – offers which are perhaps not advertised on the website for other users to claim. These preferences can be changed at any time by logging in and accessing the ‘edit my profile’ tab at the top of the page. Membership is extended to friends and family, so multiple tickets or offers can be bought with one membership. This allows entire families to enjoy discounts for the price of only one membership. There is no limit to the amount of times a member can take advantage of an offer, so the same deal can be purchased numerous times by the same member (as long as they are not used for resale). Corporate memberships are available for companies with five employees or more. This provides heavily discounted membership fees per employee, rather than each

Currently, there are ‘our choices’ which are picked by the Transport Travel Club and ‘London’, which features offers based in the capital. Further sections at the bottom of the page include ‘cruise’, ‘hotel’ and ‘theme park’ offers. The search function allows users to browse offers via keywords, categories and location, or through several of these at a time. This makes finding the perfect deal quick and easy. Alternatively, users can browse deals using the top panel, with ‘all offers’ displaying all available deals, and ‘last chance’ displaying offers that are due to expire soon. Additionally, ‘accommodation’ covers all hotel offers, ‘attractions’ displays either museums, aquariums or theme parks (depending on which is chosen), ‘events’ lists specific events and ‘holidays’ covers cruises and other all-inclusive holiday deals. A live Twitter feed on the right side of the homepage keeps users up-to-date with the latest tweets from Transport Travel Club (follow @ TransportTravel).
Transport Travel Club members can change their personal details and preferences by using the ‘edit my profile’ button in the top panel.
OFFERS
Transport Travel Club provides a wide range of offers in the UK and beyond. Offers include holidays abroad, weekend trips, hotel offers, restaurant discounts and specific theatre and music events. Requests from members for specific offers are welcomed and every effort will be made to make that deal available to Transport Travel Club members. After searching or browsing, a list of relevant offers will be displayed. The list briefly details the deal, demonstrates the discount offered (either through pounds or a percentage) and provides the offer’s expiration date. Clicking on an offer will link through to the deal’s main page. The main page for each deal provides all details in various sections. The top of the page illustrates the discount itself, followed by pictures related to that offer. The ‘best bits’ and ‘offer summary’ sections highlight the best parts of the offer and provide a brief summary of what is included. Further down, ‘about the offer’ provides a full description of the deal, as well as helpful buttons, which detail the accessibility of the deal
and other features such as Wifi access and food availability. Final details are available in the ‘other helpful details’ section at the bottom of the page, which includes the provider’s contact details and a map (if relevant). The ‘other local deals’ tab lists additional offers available in that area, such as nearby hotels or restaurants.
MAKING A PURCHASE
Clicking on the ‘get offer’ button will provide users with several options. If the relevant company has provided it, users will be given a link to a special page on their website, which only Transport Travel Club members can access. They can then purchase the deal through that page. Alternatively, a discount code will be given with a website address to visit and/or a phone number to call. Simply quote the discount code when checking out or when calling to receive the discount. Transport Travel Club members do not pay for deals on www.transporttravelclub. com – all transactions are handled by the providers either on their own website or over the phone. REGIONAL FOCUS // SHROPSHIRE
SHREWSBURY Amy Moore reviews a recent familiarisation trip to the town, which features an eclectic mix of old and new attractions suitable for groups
hrewsbury sees an abundance of classical buildings dominate its traditional market square, which thrives with a generous amount of independent shops and boutiques. Its Old Market Hall was built in 15951596 and prominently stands at the base of Shrewsbury’s iconic clock tower. Its attractive, flagstone floors were originally used as a corn market, with the upper floor used to trade the wool imported from Wales. At the modern Market Hall, lift access is available to both floors, with the site still home to authentic market fare every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Formerly owned by a local woollen cloth merchant, Owen’s Mansion stands prominent on the High Street. Owen’s Mansion was built by Richard Owen in 1592. Most characteristic are the petit wooden models perched on the top arches of the roof to commemorate its ancient inhabitants. The River Severn loops around this quaint little town, creating what was once a medieval fortress. Our group 14

SHREWSBURY CASTLE & SHROPSHIRE REGIMENTAL MUSEUM
Shrewsbury Castle is home to the Shropshire Regimental Museum. GTW would describe the muddy, red brick exterior of Shrewsbury Castle as somewhat isolated from the town. The magnificent structure dates back to the Norman times, with a great wall erected to secure the border with Wales. Offering a more unique flavour, Shrewsbury Castle was once the property of Elizabeth I. It now remains under the watchful eye of Shropshire County Council. ade in Dagenham: The Musical premiered at the Adelphi Theatre in October 2014, and is loosely based on the 2010 film of the same name. Made in Dagenham: The Musical transports the audience to Essex in 1968, to the model home of housewife Rita O’ Grady, played by the talented Gemma Arterton; better known ‘Bond Girl’ from the Quantum of Solace (amongst other theatre and film credits). The auditorium wasn’t as packed as I’d expected for such a contemporary production. Made in Dagenham: The Musical isn’t a complete ‘write off’ however, with a frequent musical injection polishing the more modern adaptation penned by comedian Richard Bean. Perhaps due to dealing with a more concrete issue, Bean’s humour is somewhat subtler than that demonstrated in Great Britain. Soon to be the hub of an equal pay dispute, the Ford Dagenham factory is convincingly set, with ‘pop out’ parts bordering the stage, accompanied by a conveyor belt of leather seating providing constant movement in the background. Gearing up for the show, boldly patterned, print writing dominated the stage, neatly reflecting the silhouettes of the cast during interval when the curtain fell. Made in Dagenham: The Musical boasts a swinging ‘60s vibe, with audience members from the era guaranteed to admire the printed, loose fitting dresses, patterned jumpsuits and props, which remain the focal point for

most scenes. Introduced in the first act, Rita O’ Grady and Eddie O’ Grady’s (played by Adrian Der Gregorian) three-tier house is one particular prop to marvel at, with a winning combination of theatrical smoke, pyrotechnics, strobe and flash lighting bringing the feminist success story to life on stage. Adrian Der Gregorian gave an impressive vocal performance, adding intensity to the new score composed by David Arnold (Music) and Richard Thomas (Lyrics). Gemma Arterton did well to accentuate Rita O’ Grady’s seemingly ‘dark horse’ persona, but was often outshone by minor characters in the vocal department. For me however, the most memorable performance was from Steve Furst as Tooley, who boldly demonstrated that everything is bigger and better is the United States. Made in Dagenham: The Musical is highly characterfocused, with Sandra (played
by Sophie Issacs) resembling a blonde, Barbara Windsoresque character from Carry On, loudmouth Beryl (played by Sophie Stanton) and clueless PM Harold Wilson (played by Mark Hadfield), reflecting the production’s ability not to take itself too seriously. Timid tea lady, Kath Duggan, kept the audience silently entertained throughout, and provided an

GTW would highly recommend sitting in stalls, with various cast members occupying the wings. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Made in Dagenham: The Musical and left the theatre feeling pleasantly surprised. EMMA THORNETT
Puppeteering plays a prominent part in the production of War Horse, with actors working to put ‘breath’ into the animal
Amy Moore speaks exclusively to Emma Thornett, one of the leading puppeteers who plays Baby Joey in War Horse at the New London Theatre
Have you always been interested in puppeteering? I hadn’t done any puppeteering before I went for the War Horse audition, so I was a bit apprehensive about whether I’d actually be able to do it. I had grown up with horses, and I think it was lucky that my first puppeteering experience was to puppeteer a horse. I knew a little bit about how horses move and think. The puppets that we use are
so beautifully made, and the foal puppet that I first picked up had been used quite a lot. It had this lovely, malleable feel to it. Puppetry is such a wonderful skill that I feel I’ve learnt from the show. You’re constantly refining, especially within the section that I do – it’s about the foal learning and seeing things for the very first time. It’s really exciting to be able to portray that emotion through the puppet.
Could you tell us a little more about that scene? Puppeteers swap parts every show, which is nice because it keeps the performance fresh. Every time you’re changing position and changing combination with other puppeteers, it feels like a slightly different character is brought out of him. We meet Joey when he is very young – about three or four months old. He meets Albert – the young boy – who

grows with him and they learn together. Joey especially learns about humans through Albert. It’s a really lovely sequence. When I first saw the show, it was a moment that overwhelmed me; with the massive swelling of music and the sequence building, when suddenly this enormous, majestic puppet that is extremely lifelike comes bursting through.
Is the puppet difficult to manoeuvre? We’re now using a new puppet and when we first picked him up, he was a lot less malleable because the leather hadn’t been worked and the wood hadn’t had five years of use. It did take quite a lot of getting used to. The important thing to consider when we’re puppeteering is to put the breath into the animal. It’s very difficult for a puppet to come to life on stage without breath. The way we use breath is through the cage of the puppet, with the body resting on the wrists. The eyes are beautifully made. They’re made of frosted glass, which somehow manages to capture the light and completely brings the puppet to life. The important thing is to remember that horses have 360 vision. If someone is walking behind www.grouptravelworld.com

#info War Horse will be performed at the New London Theatre until October 2015. Tickets are available from www.warhorseonstage.com
#credits Emma Thornett trained at the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama. Theatre credits include the title roles in Jack and the Beanstalk and Aladdin at the Yvonne Arnaud, Guildford, Robin Hood at Cardiff New Theatre, 101 Dalmatians at Northampton Theatre Royal, Around the World in 80 Days at the Liverpool Playhouse and Blood Brothers in the West End. Television credits include Toy Soldiers, Double Take and Extras.
Baby Joey, we can show that he knows they’re there by slightly turning the ear. It’s those tiny, micro movements that really draw the audience in.
How many people does it take to perform Baby Joey? You have the head, the heart and the hind. The heart puppeteer has to put their arms through the body, whilst they hold the legs with their hands. The cage then rests on the wrists. The heart puppeteer position is quite strenuous, because Baby Joey is that much smaller and you’re in a very bent down position. There’s a lot of fitness to make sure we have the core strength to deal with that. The hind puppeteer is outside the cage and holding the legs onto the body. His task is to make sure the gate of the horse is in the right mode. This is something we learn very early on. It’s his job to make sure all the rhythms are right for the walks, the trots and the gallop. www.grouptravelworld.com
038_039_GTW_Jan15_Theatre Interview.indd 39
Baby Joey spends quite a lot of time in a heightened state of anxiety. We will indicate that through the breath. The breath doesn’t just keep the puppet alive, it is also a really valuable tool for us as puppeteers to know where Baby Joey’s mind is – what he’s thinking and how he’s feeling. There’s a line in the book: “I remember well enough the day of the horse sale. The terror of it stayed with
meeting the author, Michael Morpurgo. He’s such a wonderful and warm man that you can feel his personality come through in this writing. He’s really supportive. He’s planning to take the cast out for egg and chips.
me all my life.” It’s a massive challenge to work so closely with two other people and when we’re breathing together, it helps to keep us together.
How do you keep the performances fresh? There are certain bits that aren’t set. For example in the auction scene, we’re walking, running and galloping around the stage, and it’s completely improvised. For three people to be able to improvise together is a massive achievement.
Were you familiar with the novel before you accepted the role? I actually saw the play first – it’s been running for about six years – and I was blown away by it. I’ve had the privilege of
Do you have any other theatre experience? My first was Blood Brothers in the West End for 18 months, and I’ve done quite a lot of national tours across the country. I have done a few musicals, but I was really keen on doing some straight theatre. Although I do love singing, I’m really pleased to perform in a show where I can really exercise my acting abilities.
Finally, what can audiences expect from the show? The audience can expect a very heart warming, human story, which is told from all sides. They can also can expect a very unbiased view of the war, and maybe a few tears. I’m just so proud to be a part of it. n

Omid Djalili: g n o d g in d a m a l a n a Ir
BY ALEXANDRA BERTRAND
O
mid Djalili is back on tour with Iranalamadingdong, following a successful four-week run in The Shawshank Redemption at the Wyndham’s Theatre, and a sold out season at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Omid Djalili is best known for The Mummy and The Infidel, where he won the Best Actor Award at the Turin Film Festival. Additional television credits include Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, Over The Hedge and successful James
Bond flick The World Is Not Enough. Following his recent success, it’s fantastic to see Omid Djalili back on tour and making us laugh. Iranalamadingdong commenced on September 18, and will continue through to March 28, concluding at the London Apollo Theatre in Hammersmith. I was lucky enough to see him perform at the Portsmouth Guildhall. The show opened with a topical gag, with Omid Djalili proceeding to joke about his well-known Iranian roots, the ethnicity of culture, religion, getting older, showbusiness, and concluding with football,
Each exchange was followed by a gaggle of laughter from the audience, which continued throughout the answers to our questions.
of which he is an avid fan. After the main show, the floor was open for a Q&A session. Before entering, the audience was asked to write down any questions they wanted to ask Omid Djalili at the end of the show. One of my guest’s questions was read aloud: “What kind of underwear do you wear?” Omid Djalili replied: “What’s with you guys and asking me about my pants?” Each exchange was followed by a gaggle of laughter from the audience, which continued throughout the answers to our questions. At one point, Omid Djalili even broke out into song. I was stunned as he had a fantastic singing voice. He will
also dance for you, but only if you laugh at a pun or a very bad joke. Most memorable was when the audience collectively groaned at his poor timing, which was later saved by yet another pun. Iranalamadingdong covered a wide and diverse range of topics within two hours and overall; it was a great night out. After the show, there was a chance to purchase a signed copy of Omid Djalili’s Autobiography, Hopeful, with an additional option to have pictures taken with the renowned comedy star. UKINBOUND NEWS By Amy O’Donovan, Events & Commercial Manager, UKinbound
A busy new year
H
appy New Year! UKinbound is looking forward to a busy year. We held our first event for our Corporate Partners in December. It was an exclusive event sponsored by our Gold Partner made. We had a welcome drinks reception and then attended the Palladium Theatre to see Nicole Scherzinger perform in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical, Cats. The Palladium is a wonderful theatre. Upon entry, it was hard not to marvel at the set, which looked impressive before the show had even started. The show was incredible and the balletic movement of the cast was utterly mesmerising. It was a pleasure to host our Corporate Partners at this performance that is strictly limited to a 12 week run. 2014 ended with our highest attended General Meeting to date, where the new Chairman and Board of Directors of UKinbound were announced. Congratulations to all. They will all take up their new role at the AGM, which will take place at the Annual Convention. The shortlist for the UKinbound Awards of Excellence 2014 were also announced. Voting takes place in January and is open to all UKinbound members. The winners will be announced at the Gala Dinner, which also takes place at the Annual Convention. It was a great way for UKinbound to end our 2014
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical, Cats
activities. This leads me onto the Annual Convention, which takes place from February 11-13, 2015. With only a short time remaining until our main flagship event, we are all looking forward it. Leicester Shire Promotions have been extremely supportive. I have been working closely with them over the past few months and thanks to their support, it should be a fantastic event. In 2010, the government outlined their aspirations for tourism growth, with a target of 40 million tourists to be welcomed to the UK by 2020. Already at the halfway point, it seems appropriate that the theme for the 2015 Annual Convention is Past, Present and Future. The Annual Convention is open to both members and non-members, so if you are interested in attending, please get in touch. It will be a great opportunity to network with over 200 industry colleagues and attend the B2B Workshop, which provides an invaluable platform to promote and grow your products and services. There will be an exciting political debate session and you can also meet our new Board of Directors for 2015-2017. Our informal networking evening will be held in the unique setting of the National Space Centre, with the UKinbound Awards of Excellence and Gala Dinner taking place at Athena. Speakers include our moderator, Bill Turnbull of BBC Breakfast, Simon Calder, Travel Journalist and Broadcaster, Nigel Huddleston, Industry Head Travel at Google and Conservative
The National Space Centre will host the networking evening as part of the UKinbound annual convention Candidate for Mid-Worcestershire, Chas Bishop, Chief Executive at National Space Centre, Dr Richard Buckley of University of Leicester and Patrick Robinson, Head of Public Policy at Airbnb. The Annual Convention will end with familiarisation trips on Friday, February 13. There are two options available, History & Heritage and Food & Drink. Leicester is a modern and cultural city steeped in history and has been in the international spotlight recently following the discovery King Richard III’s remains. 2015 will be a memorable year for the city, with the re-interment of King Richard III taking place in March, with the city also hosting the Rugby World Cup Games. East Midlands Train are offering delegates a discount, so book your place now to avoid disappointment.

The testimonial that follows is from a holiday which Denise planned and Paul drove. ‘Many thanks for arranging yet another superb holiday for our members. All hotels were excellent and the choice of places visited varied from National Memorial Arboretum, the Falkirk Wheel to the highlight, of course, the Edinburgh Tattoo (despite the rain). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Praise must go again to PS for safely driving us – this time it was over 1000 miles. I had many comments from those on board regarding his excellent driving skills – careful and calm throughout. He has a very good rapport with us and is very much part of our group these days – it wouldn’t be the same without him!
Again many thanks for your hard work, looking forward to getting the next one off the ground later this year.’ DG a group organiser from Portslade, East Sussex Top Small Fleet Operator, Up to 15 Vehicles – winners two years in a row! Walking is a popular activity on the Isle of Man. GOMANN ADVENTURES

The jewel in the Irish Sea
Q
uirky, beautiful and bursting with a unique culture and history, the Isle of Man has everything your group needs for a getaway with a difference. Squeezed into its 200 square miles of gorgeous rolling countryside are quaint Victorian railways that are situated just a short drive – or simply a walk – apart.
VICTORIAN HERITAGE
The Celtic and Norse influences are obvious across the island, along with its antique Victorian heritage. During the reign of Queen Victoria, the Isle of Man became an incredibly popular holiday destination. In the year of her Jubilee in 1897, there were over a hundred hotels

Holly Cave explores the wealth of heritage offered by one of the most popular island destinations for groups playing host to over 300,000 summer visitors. With the Industrial Revolution came the growth of the towns and resorts, and steam trains criss-crossed the countryside. Two gentlemen – Mr Maxwell and Mr Tuke – were the architects who designed the Blackpool Tower and devised a grand, electric tramway to run along the cliffs of the Isle of Man. Inaugurated in 1893, the open-topped, double-decker trams of Marine Drive were ideal for taking in the sea air. After falling into disrepair,
Marine Drive has now been re-opened to walkers and cyclists via the kissing gates, which retain a hint of its former Victorian atmosphere. Nostalgic journeys on other versions of Victorian-era transport are available elsewhere on the island. The Manx Electric Railway runs for 17 wonderfully scenic miles, connecting the capital of Douglas with Laxey in the east and Ramsey in the north. Railway enthusiasts will love the fact that two of the trams in use on this line are the oldest regularly operated in the

The Isle of Man Steam Railway is yet another Victorian introduction and remains one of the longest narrow gauge steam lines in Britain world. Hop on and off at the many stops available to explore the more remote parts of the island. Before leaving Douglas, call in at the Grand Union Camera Obscura on the hillside above town - an eccentric reminder of the area’s Victorian past. Built for astronomical purposes, the eleven-lensed site projects views of the surrounding hills, horizon, lighthouse and harbour onto a circular table. Please note that disabled access to this spot is rather limited. The Isle of Man Steam Railway – complete with the original locomotives and carriages – is yet another Victorian
introduction and remains one of the longest narrow gauge steam lines in Britain. It transports visitors and locals alike from Douglas, down to the attractions and settlements to the south of the island. If you’re seriously drawn to train journeys, hop aboard the Snaefell Mountain Railway to the highest point on the island, enjoy a trip on the Manx Electric Railway, the Groudle Glen Railway or take the old mining train to Laxey. It’s here that you’ll find the candy cane-coloured Great Laxey Wheel – the world’s largest remaining watermill. Designed by Victorian engineer Robert Casement, the wheel originally pumped water from the nearby mining complex. A group permit will allow you into the building to glimpse into the mine, to climb to the top of the wheel and to wander through the lovely surrounds of Glen Mooar. To the west, the Victorian resort of Peel remains the island’s only city. Fishing boats bob in the harbour where fishermen
haul in the herring used to make Manx kippers and little shops, cafes and restaurants line the narrow streets. Walk along the beach and promenade where Victorian holidaymakers would have stretched their legs. The Grove Museum of Victorian Life in Ramsey is a perfectly preserved slice of Victorian life. Group visits can be booked in advance for a discounted rate or pre-arranged for a private out-of-hours experience. The museum is a family home that tells the story of the Gibb family through its decorated rooms and gardens. Stop for a game of croquet if you have time.
ANCIENT HISTORY
Norse Crosses pop up in churchyards all over the island. For a more Viking vibe, seek out the Iron Age fort of Cronk ny Merriu (Hill of the Dead) near Port Grenaugh. The Balladoole Viking burial site contains a Viking ship built in the 1040s. Similarly at the House of Manannan, visitors can get close to fascinating reconstructions, including a Viking longhouse and Viking longship. The atmospheric Peel Castle dates back to long before the Victorians, having stood since 1392. The site is renowned as the burial site for the famous Pagan Lady – one of the most significant female burial sites outside Scandinavia. There’s a panoramic view of Peel from the Gatehouse Tower and seals and basking sharks can sometimes be spotted from the headland here. Castle Rushden in the old capital of Castletown dates back

There are a number of pretty villages worth exploring around the island, in addition to rugged cliffs and beautiful glens
to the time of Magnus, the last Norse King. Amazingly well-preserved, the vaulted rooms of this limestone medieval castle echoes with history, which isn’t surprising when you consider that it’s been used as a fortress, home and prison since 1265. Ghost tours are a popular pastime here. You may also consider visiting Rushen Abbey, where a brilliant Interpretation Centre recounts its history from 1134 to the present day. Formerly a monastery, Rushden Abbey became the Isle of Man’s seat of religious power. If it’s glimpses of authentic Viking gold you’re after then you could call in at the Viking Gallery within the Manx Museum. There’s also an art gallery, interactive exhibits and many other exhibitions that recount the history of the island. Admission is free.
OUTDOOR PURSUITS
Walking is a popular activity on the Isle of Man. The ‘three legs of Man’ are joined at the thigh and are of unknown origin, but it’s certain that the locals like to trek around their home as much as they like to jump aboard the railways. There are a number of pretty villages worth exploring around the island, in addition to rugged cliffs and beautiful glens. Dhoon Glen is one of the steepest with 190 steps and a gushing waterfall. Curragh’s Wildlife Park covers 50 acres. It is home to over 300 animals and 70 species, such as Humboldt penguins, spider monkeys, lynx and lemurs. Beyond the animal enclosures, wooden walkways lead through to an extensive nature reserve that is internationally recognised as a wetland of scientific interest, where you could spot wild wallabies amongst the undergrowth. These wetlands give the park its name; the Manx word “curragh” meaning bog. 2015 is the 50th anniversary
The candy-cane coloured Great Laxey Wheel is the world’s largest remaining watermill of Curragh’s Wildlife Park and the team will be holding various events to celebrate. Groups are welcomed with special rates if in a party of 10 or more. The night sky is a stunning sight here. In fact, the Isle of Man contains 26 Dark Sky discovery sites in the British Isles. Onchan Park is a convenient spot, located just two miles north of Douglas where the stars shine over the sea. It’s worth staying up late on a clear night to enjoy the astronomical sights—even with the naked eye the Orion Nebula is often visible. You may even be lucky enough to spot the mystical flicker of the Northern Lights. There’s nine golf courses on the island with the Venture Centre organising archery, abseiling, kayaking, orienteering and many more physical activities. Go-Mann Adventures create walks,

challenges and skill-building courses for groups visiting the area. Plus, they can build bespoke activities to suit your group.
PLANNING YOUR VISIT
To really get to grips with the character of the island, it’s vital to get local insight. The Guild of Manx Registered Tour Guides are eager and willing to introduce visitors to the amazing stories and wonderful eccentricities of their home. All are passionate professionals with qualified Blue Badge level guides and a breadth and depth of knowledge about the history, geology, and folklore of the island. They’re also likely to be full of recommendations for drinking holes and places to eat. Complete tour planning can be arranged and the guides can join you in your own transport or can arrange local vehicle hire if required. If your party anticipates visiting a lot of the attractions, its excellent value to buy a Holiday Pass, which provides admission to multiple sites and offers discounted rates for groups. Holiday Passes are available from all Manx National Heritage Sites. A combined Heritage and Transport Pass is also available for larger groups of 20 or more, which also includes unlimited travel on the heritage railways, buses and horse trams in Douglas. Popular times to visit include the Yn Cruinnaght Inter-Celtic Festival, which will be held from July 15-19, 2015. It’s a vibrant celebration of the Isle of Man’s heritage, complete with costumed characters, music, dancing, parades and battle re-enactments. Another international event is the annual Isle of Man Tourist Trophy Race. This major motorcycle road race is a huge affair with an associated festival, and takes place over a couple of weeks in late May and early June. n www.grouptravelworld.com

Mayan educational talk at Cadbury World
SCHOOL GROUP FOCUS
Holly Cave categorises some fun educational activities tailored to teachers and pupils alike
D
espite the advent of a more rigorous National Curriculum and a perceived growth in risk averse activities, school trips are still thriving. Across the UK, attractions and learning centres have more on offer than ever before for teachers and pupils, offering a change of scene, inspiration, memorable learning and a whole lot of fun.
CROSS-CURRICULAR
How many children would turn down the opportunity to visit the home of British chocolate, Cadbury World in Bournville near Birmingham? A specialised Chocolate Trail hand-out guides students through the attraction’s different exhibits with a question and answer format. Cadbury World has just launched a brand new talk about the Mayan civilisation that ties into the Ancient Civilisations curriculum changes. Designed for Key Stage Two, it engages students in the story of the Mayan’s role within the early history of cocoa through multimedia and interactivity. With educational provisions for primary and secondary students, the attraction offers downloadable teaching resources from its website, along with talks related to history, design and technology, business studies and geography. 60

Cadbury World has launched a talk tailored to the Ancient Civilisations curriculum Organisers can visit for free in advance and prices start from £7.90 per pupil. LEGOLAND is another popular national attraction that offers a programme for schools. Using LEGO bricks, students can learn about computer programming, geography, wildlife conservation and much more. A National Curriculum “map” helps teachers tailor their day to the 55 rides,
live shows and attractions available to a relevant area of study. Prices start from £5 per child for a pre-school visit and there are plenty of optional extras, such as lunch boxes, workshops, storytelling sessions and other events. There are a number of excellent outdoor activity centres around the UK, many of which combine a day out in the open with a variety of educational themes.

The Deep is based in Hull and is easily one of the UK’s best aquariums and wildlife centres, welcoming over 30,000 pupils through its doors each year.
SCHOOL GROUP FOCUS At Path Hill Outdoors near Reading, school days out are focussed on fun and are embedded with early years and primary curriculum. During the summer months, Path Hill run some unusual, nature-related events for schools such as a “moth watch.” Julia Warwick, Associate Director at Path Hill Outdoors, said: “One of our groups came up for a three day residential camp focusing on the Battle of Hastings. “Over the course of their stay, the children learnt about King Harold, the Normans, had a medieval banquet, jousted in wheelbarrows and finished with a battle where they used their own handmade shields.”
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHS
The team at Monkey World are passionate about preventing the illegal trade of primates. Their Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset nurses monkeys and apes back to full health, rehabilitating them before placing them back into their natural habitat. The charity produces education packs and workbooks, as well as downloadable work sheets related to biology, habitats and conservation issues. Monkey World is an inspiring place to take schoolchildren thanks to the drive and commitment of its volunteers and employees. The Deep is based in Hull and is easily one of the UK’s best aquariums and wildlife centres, welcoming over 30,000 pupils through its doors each year. With a purpose-built Learning Centre and lunch area, The Deep is a great choice for an organised day out. The Deep offers a range of penguinthemed workshops covering habitat threats, climate change and food chains, alongside a range of other activities, workshops and presentations all created by the team of in-house teachers. A halfday visit is advised for those wishing to include an educational workshop and explore the attraction. A charge of £6 per pupil includes a teacher preview visit, free coach parking, secure bag store, a workshop and general entry to all the exhibits. Goody bags can also be preordered.
The attraction is always popular on World Book Day, offering free entry for children dressed as their favourite character. Plus, Beatrix Potter makes an appearance to read a tale in the foyer. London schools often head to Shakespeare’s Globe on the Southbank, where students can really appreciate the living and breathing nature of the playwright William Shakespeare. The educational team offer a year-round programme of learning events, courses and projects for learners at Key Stage Two and above. Over 70% of London state schools have taken part in their outreach projects. Book into a workshop on a play of your choosing, visit Sackler Studios for drama activities or enjoy a stage version of the Playing Shakespeare series – designed specifically for Key Stage Three, Four and A-Level students. The next production will be Othello, playing at the Globe Theatre from February 2015. Visit www.shakespearesglobe. com to apply for tickets.
HISTORY
The living city of the North, Beamish offers a multi-sensory experience that will be incredibly memorable for students of all ages. Despite the nature of the site, the Beamish Learning Department tailors to the needs of pupils with physical
disabilities and learning difficulties by offering a detailed access document and creating suitable activities. Tons of online resources help teachers create lesson plans about the modern history of Britain and the Literacy Resource is an especially nice touch, which helps students write accounts of their visit and create letters for thanks to the museum. Located near Milton Keynes, historic Bletchley Park is more popular than ever thanks to movie blockbuster The Imitation Game. The workplace of the World War Two code-breakers has just announced a new bursary scheme, which provides free school trips for groups most in need of financial support. During their time in the building, pupils will learn about the history of the code-breaking effort, enjoy the regularlychanging exhibitions and take part in talks and activities to test their own skills. Glastonbury Abbey in Somerset has seen many comings and goings since its inauguration in the 7th century. Younger pupils will love learning about medieval cooking in the Abbot’s Kitchen and a variety of tours give students the inside story on the church, the abbey, local myths and legends and life as a monk. Well thought out trails, followup activities, quizzes

ENGLISH, DRAMA & LITERACY
Younger pupils will love the World of Beatrix Potter, tucked away in the beautiful Lake District where the author lived and worked. Sarah Melhuish, Communications Manager at the World of Beatrix Potter, said: “The good thing about our school trips is that we have a comprehensive downloadable resources pack for teachers. “We also offer free garden talks and can arrange tours with other local attractions at great prices.” Peter Rabbit Tea Parties are available a couple afternoons a month from April. 62

MUSIC, ART & DESIGN
The UK is so rich with galleries and centres for creativity that it is tricky to pull out just a few. For novelty, Bradford’s National Media Museum’s eight floors burst with both famous and cutting edge film, photography, television, animation and new media. There’s a spellbinding 3D IMAX cinema and school groups from Key Stage Two upwards can arrange to take part in workshops, talks, TV production tours, study days and live interactive show CinemaMagic. Admission to the museum is free. The Tate isn’t just about London. Sister galleries of the capital’s Tate Modern and Tate Britain now welcome groups in St Ives and Liverpool. School visits to all four are free of charge, though activities such as object handling, sketchbook tours and sculpture workshops carry a fee. If you enjoy your visit, you might be interested in joining with a local project led by the gallery or registering for the BP Art Exchange—a global online

THE BEST OF THE REST
The enchanting appeal of York Minster caters to all age groups studying religious education and even schoolchildren will gaze up in unfettered awe at the magnificence of this building. For younger ones, treasure hunts and exploratory trails lead groups through the cathedral. The website (www.yorkminster.org/ learning/school-visits) also provides plenty of factsheets and activities for completion before, during or after your visit. Prices start from £3 per pupil for a self-guided visit, but there are lots of options to consider such as guided tours, climbing the 275 steps of the Central Tower and multimedia workshops in the Learning Centre. Geography trips don’t have to involve visiting centres or attractions. However, the varied countryside of the Elan Valley in Wales boasts a terrific visitor centre well-equipped to deal with twitchy students. An ideal day trip from Birmingham, Cardiff or Manchester, your group will be well looked after by a specialised Environmental Education Ranger free of charge. Transport grants and risk assessments may be available for new schools. n www.grouptravelworld.com

Best of the Best
The Prince Rupert Hotel, Shrewsbury Tucked away on a little side street, Amy Moore reviews the desired choice of accommodation for visitors to the region
T
he Prince Rupert Hotel has recently achieved four-star status and is characterised by its prominent and medieval exterior. With an entrance on Butcher Row, the Grade II listed building features low, darkened beams and intricate mood lighting, which accentuates the somewhat simple yet archaic décor juxtaposed by its more modernised bathroom installations. The Prince Rupert Hotel boasts the former home of Prince Rupert (the nephew of Charles I and the grandson of King James I) who was pivotal in commandeering the royalist cavalry during the English Civil War. The Charles I Suite commemorates with an authentic 15th century theme featuring exposed timber beams and crooked flooring throughout. The Prince Rupert Suite is a little more impressive, labelled as the hotel’s largest and most romantic room to date. The Prince Rupert Suite houses an attractive oak panelled bathroom with a prestigious deep roll top bath and solid oak floor. The Prince Rupert Hotel boasts 70 luxurious ensuite bedrooms following an extensive restoration project, navigated by a narrow labyrinth of halls. GTW was allocated a standard single room for two nights from October 24-26. Most memorable was the deluxe ensuite bathroom, featuring a deep bowl shaped sink and waterfall shower (with the conventional spray option) extending into the wall. The bed was elegantly dressed with designer

fabrics and overlooked the cobbled advance into Fish Street. Prince Rupert Hotel is a charming building. GTW was placed towards the back of the hotel, which is highly recommended for those desiring a peaceful slumber. A generous selection of Duck Island products were neatly displayed in the spacious bathroom, reminiscent of my local and favoured choice of accommodation in Peterborough: the Great Northern Hotel. The Prince Rupert Hotel is privately owned and offers personalised valet parking (the hotel has its own car park) with overnight guests receiving complimentary access to its own private health club – which is enough to consider revisiting. The Prince Rupert Hotel recently received planning permission to enhance its facilities, with the opening of an exterior garden terrace and luxurious second floor loft suite. An adjoining front/south facing balcony was also constructed, boasting the only bedroom in Shrewsbury to offer a private terrace overlooking the sublime town skyline. The majority of rooms at the rear of the The Prince Rupert Hotel overlook the natural 12th century courtyard situated adjacent to the cluster of churches nearby. Princess Charlotte Suite is a family friendly split level room suited to an authentic Georgian theme. Guests to the suite will be welcomed by an impressive four poster bed, with a corner bath and separate walk in shower for added convenience.

All six 12th Century Mansion House Suites can be accessed via a Jacobean style staircase, leading the way to Shrewsbury’s oldest secular building. All Mansion House Suites have been recently refurbished with the placement of ambient antiquities. The Prince Rupert Hotel has three high class restaurants to choose from – both on location and nearby to encourage further exploration of the town and surrounding areas. Our group sampled the medieval Royalist Restaurant, with its delectable a la carte menu serving locally sourced seasonal produce. Live cooking demonstrations at dinner highlighted The Prince Rupert Hotel’s strong dedication to customer service. Particular period features were intertwined with bands of festive lighting to celebrate the season, bouncing off the knights in shining armour that stand to oversee the spacious layout of seats. Additional restaurants managed by The Prince Rupert Hotel include Chambers and La Trattoria, which serves

Steve Lee, Treasurer at the CTC. “It’s been made possible because financially, the CTC continues to be in excellent shape with good reserves. “We have regrettably lost some members, but this has been offset by the addition of 30 new members – bringing member numbers above 300. “In addition, we continue to be especially grateful to the six CTC partners whose extra support is much appreciated.”

Winter sports insurance crucial, warn ABTA & FCO 2014 research launched by ABTA and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) revealed that almost a third of people (29%) taking a ski or snowboarding holiday travelled without adequate travel insurance – putting themselves at risk of high medical bills if injured. In response to these findings, ABTA and the FCO are warning aspiring skiers and snowboarders about the forthcoming dangers of travelling without adequate winter sports insurance. It was reported that under 35s are most likely to embark on a winter sports holiday and therefore are the least likely to take out winter sports insurance, with an estimate 32% travelling without it. A whopping 19% of 16-24
year olds and 23% of 2534 year olds think travel insurance is unnecessary and assume the UK Government will cover the costs for their treatment. Similarly, 25% of 16-25 year olds and 23% of 25-34 year olds think they don’t need insurance when travelling in Europe as they have a European Heath Insurance Card, which doesn’t cover assistance on the slopes. Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive at ABTA, said: “Winter holidays often include activities that may not be covered by the usual travel insurance policies and holidaymakers should make sure that they are covered for everything they plan to do.” For more information visit www.abta.com/skisafe

Earlier this year, I took my group to Northumberland and everyone agreed it was the best holiday we’d had. Quite a few people said to me beforehand, “why on earth would you want to go to Newcastle?” Since the days of Margaret Thatcher, the closure of the majority of the coalmines and the subsequent demise of a great many industries, the people of Northumberland have made the most of their best asset – the stunning scenery – and have thus embraced tourism wholeheartedly. My other favourite destination is Norfolk for the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. Housed on the grounds are delightful shopping booths, where you may find many unusual decorations and presents. They now have a superb restaurant serving hot meals, sandwiches and snacks, with mulled wine and mince pies. It is a truly amazing experience, guaranteed to get you in the festive spirit.
Describe the worst group trip you’ve been on and why? For me, it has to be the time we went to Lille Christmas Market. Living in/around Canterbury, this is easily a day trip for us. We had been there about an hour when I was contacted with the news that one of my ladies had fallen and broken her femur. It was 24 hours before I could contact her son, who was travelling to Italy. Hotels were full, but I eventually found a room at an exorbitant price. This was back when GTOs were able to offer travel insurance and this poor lady was the only person who
The Millennium Bridge in Newcastle had opted to take out this insurance, which did make life much easier. All out of pocket expenses were covered for both her and me.
What’s your favourite UK destination for a group day out? London, as there is so much to see and do. We have attended some fabulous concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and Barbican Theatre. We aim to see at least one or two musicals each year. This is an addition to all the wonderful historical places to visit there.
What do you think makes a good group experience? Planning and attention to detail – I always make sure that we leave plenty of time for pick ups and make sure that wherever our destination is, they know what time to expect us. I prepay wherever possible. There’s nothing worse than keeping your group waiting while you queue to pay. Little extras help – we always have the sweetie tin to pass round on the way home. Finally, always greet them with a big smile.
What do you always pack? The First Aid Kit – experience has taught me that you cannot be too careful.
What do you always leave out? Nothing – I would probably take the kitchen sink if I could fit it in the suitcase. When you are out with your group, albeit for the day or on holiday, you want them to have a good time, so leave worries and negative thoughts behind.
What were your most recent group trips? We have just returned from a brilliant weekend at Thursford. We stayed overnight at the Holiday Inn in Norwich and on the way home stopped at Stoke-by-Nayland Hotel near Colchester for a superb Christmas lunch, arranged for us by Ian Pearson from Harry Shaw. In regards to day trips, we had a lovely experience with the Godalming Packet Boat Company in August. We thoroughly enjoyed a sail on the Iona, drawn by a magnificent shire horse called Buddy. Afterwards, we visited Hatchlands, a National Trust property nearby. Museum of Kent Life at Maidstone was an equally fascinating day out. We were treated to a blacksmith demonstration, a tour of the herb garden and a fascinating look at the life of the hop pickers before returning to the village hall for a cream tea. We recently visited St Katherine’s Dock before spending the afternoon admiring the weird and wonderful exhibits at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. We also managed to squeeze in a quick stop at the Tower of London to look at the poppies. Finally, we recently enjoyed a lunch cruise on the River Thames with City Cruises and then headed off to Hyde Park for the Winter Wonderland. Drinks and mince pies were served on the way home and everyone departed with a small gift to thank them for their support throughout the year. n www.grouptravelworld.com
