Dear Participants, Welcome to Tulsa and thank you for your participation in Tulsa’s Route 66 Marathon. If you’re visiting Tulsa, I hope you will stay and enjoy all our city has to offer from great restaurants, shopping, museums, entertainment and the many Route 66 icons in Tulsa. Tulsans are proud of our Route 66 heritage and I hope you will get the opportunity to visit landmarks such as our historic Meadow Gold sign, a Route 66 icon since the 1940’s or the Cyrus Avery Route 66 Centennial Plaza and Memorial Bridge. At the Centennial Plaza you will find displays of flags representing the eight states through which Route 66 passes.
While you’re visiting the Centennial Plaza, you can’t miss the great views of Tulsa’s skyline from the Memorial Bridge. The sky bridge is a gateway from the Arkansas River to downtown Tulsa’s art deco district. Its zig-zag architecture and streamline features represent an eclectic era in history, comparable to today’s downtown revitalization. Thank you for participating in Tulsa’s Route 66 Marathon and taking part in a celebration of Tulsa’s history. You are truly showing your Tulsa spirit and commitment to fitness- good luck on the race and we look forward to seeing you around Tulsa. Sincerely,
Dewey F. Bartlett Jr. / Mayor / City of Tulsa

Returning this year is the Health & Fitness Expo, presented by St. John Health System, and the Classic Car Show, which occurs immediately after the races on Sunday. In award-winning tradition, special Route 66 medals will greet you at the finish line, and the My First Marathon medal, recognized by Marathon & Beyond, is waiting for all of you finishing 26.2 miles for the very first time. The corral system is used at the start of the Williams Route 66 Marathon, Half Marathon and Relay to provide the best possible experience for all participants. Runners and walkers will be assigned to one of three start corrals based projected pace. All race registrants are required to submit past and projected pace information which will be assessed and verified for proper corral assignments.
A B C
Each corral will be designated by a letter (A, B or C) which will correspond to a letter on each athlete’s bib. The entries for the corrals are on the east side of Boulder Avenue and south of start line. Participants are highly encouraged to review the map of Veteran’s Park and arrive early to make sure they have time to find their corral. Athletes will only be permitted into the corral that corresponds with the letter on their bib. Once in their assigned corral, athletes should line up by pace according to the signs posted in the corral. Athletes that wish to participate with other athletes that are friends and/or training partners may do so. However, if they are assigned to different corrals, they must start in the corral with the athlete that has the slowest entry time. There will be no exceptions to this provision.
Hand Cycle and Wheelchair athletes will have their own separate corral at the start line that will be placed in front of the Elite athletes, as the Hand Cycle and Wheelchair races start prior to the runners/walkers. Hand Cycle and Wheelchair participants will start at 7:30 a.m. Participants in corral A will start at 7:32 a.m. Participants in other corrals will start 5 minutes after the corral ahead of them clears the start line.

RELAY INFO
The Williams Route 66 Marathon Relay is a 5-leg relay event. The Marathon Relay will follow the same course as the Marathon. A runner can run more than one consecutive leg of the relay. However, each relay team must have between three and five participants. Mixed teams must have at least two female participants. All members of a team must be 40 or older for the masters division. Relay Exchange Zones
The Relay Exchange Zones will be clearly delineated with cones and fencing. As runners approach the Relay Exchange Zones, relay runners will be directed to the right side of the course and marathon/half marathon runners will be directed to keep left. Relay team members must keep the exchange zones and the marathon course clear. It will be necessary to cross the course to get to exchange zones 1 and 3. Relay participants are responsible for getting across the street safely and for crossing the course without interfering with any of the other participants. Course marshals will be there to help guide you across the course. Please be careful of the traffic and considerate of other runners. Leg # Exchange #

The runner starting out on the new leg can leave her/his clothes in the bag for the teammate to take back to the start. However you work out the logistics, you are responsible for your own gear! Don’t leave it on the bus and don’t expect the volunteers to be able to take care of it for you.
Marathon Relay Numbers and Timing Tag
Team members must wear a number visible on their front. Team members must also wear a “RELAY” bib on their back. Each team will be given one D-TAG Timing Tag attached to a Velcro strap. This strap should be worn around the runner’s ankle. The Velcro strap with the timing chip must be handed off to the next runner in the fenced exchange zones. The next runner should attach the strap around his/her ankle before proceeding to the next exchange zone. The timing computer can only read a tag that passes within a foot of the timing pad. If a runner does not want to wear the Velcro strap around his/ her ankle, he/she must bend over and make sure the chip passes within a foot of each timing pad. The last runner of each team must wear the timing tag for scoring the overall team finishing time.

RACE DAY
Cancellation, Race Alteration Policy & Weather Policy It is the primary goal of the Williams Route 66 Marathon to provide and ensure a safe event for participants, volunteers and community people alike. We will be diligent in not exposing the participants, the volunteers or the community at large to any undue risk in the production and/or execution of the event. We understand the commitment the participants have made in entering the race, however, the decisions regarding race cancellations and/or alterations will be based on the larger community safety as well as the participants. Moreover, if community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress. When weather conditions or other physical conditions present a danger to the participants as a whole, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials maintain the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could cause alteration of the race and/or the race course or length of the race to further ensure participant, volunteer and community safety. The conditions fall under the “Act of God” – and will not result in refunding of any race entry fee or future race credits. The staging of an event of this magnitude places large financial burden on the Williams Route 66 Marathon organization prior to the event date. Thus, in the event of a forced race cancellation or alteration, it is probable that the financial impact on race would not be any different than if the race was held without compromise.

The Williams Route 66 Marathon officials, along with city officials will make decisions regarding the cancellation or alteration of the race. Prior to the race, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will apprise the participants of the weather conditions and how the on-course flag system designation works. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will describe any changes that may be decided as a result of weather or other unsafe conditions. In the case of a course evacuation, Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and city police and other city officials will communicate throughout the race course; and will direct participants to safe shelters to await transportation back to the start and/or finish area.
Weather
In regards to weather specifically, the Williams Route 66 Marathon has adopted the WBGT (wet-bulb globe temperature) index as its standard. High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for participation in endurance events could result in cancellation of the event. WBGT is considered ‘the most practical heat stress index characterizing the effect of a heat stress environment on the individual.’ WBGT was developed because the dry-bulb temperature alone does not provide a realistic guide to the effects of heat, inasmuch as it does not take humidity and heat radiation
pa r t i c i pa n t g u i d e 2 0 1 0
Along the course and at the start line there will be eight medical aid (tents) stations. Each medical aid station will be flying a flag of a color corresponding to the heat stress at that time. The flag colors will change within 15 minutes of a change in the heat stress level. The staff at the aid station will know the meaning of each color flag.
As the WBGT lowers in cold weather and EAS Alerts go to yellow and/or red it is strongly recommended that all runners slow their pace and reduce their risk of hypothermia when conditions warrant. See the following page for cold weather preparation tips.
RACE DAY GUIDE
into consideration. WBGT is so-called because two of its input variables are wet-bulb temperature and a ‘blackglobe’ temperature; the third variable is the shielded dry-bulb temperature. The result of the WBGT will be indicated on a flag system that will be displayed at the start and finish area as well as at the eight medical stations along the race course. The flag color will indicate the safety conditions based on the WBGT readings. They are listed in the table below.
The Williams Route 66 Marathon asserts that each participant assumes responsibility when entering an event with the potential risks that a marathon presents. All runners should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to enter the marathon and associated events. Furthermore, it strongly advises all participants to cooperate with directives given by Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and to assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, particularly when conditions are less than ideal.
Extreme conditions that are high risk already place a burden on community healthcare systems, including emergency medical transportation, as well as hospital emergency room capacity. This burden encroaches on overall community safety and will be recognized as unnecessary and illadvised scenario of which the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will not knowingly place the community in any such position.

RACE DAY COLD WEATHER PREPARATION TIPS
Note: Please remember, in cold weather conditions, wear your bib number on your outer-most layer of clothing. •Wear a waterproof or water-resistant outer layer. •Avoid heavy cotton fabrics that absorb and retain moisture; opt for technical fabrics that shed moisture and wick water away from the body. •Pay particular attention to keeping your hands, feet and head warm and dry as these are areas where a runner may exchange heat at a faster rate. •Wear a running hat or visor to shield your eyes from potential rain and increase visibility. •Due to the chance of rain/snow mix and/or ice, watch for standing water or icy patches on the roads and in the park. •Exercise additional caution during the race to account for slick surfaces and limited visibility.
•Bring an extra change of dry clothing to change into immediately after the event, including dry shoes and socks. •Pack extra clothing in a waterproof bag and check it at the Gear Check area. •As wet weather can lead to hypothermia, if you experience persistent shivering during or after the race seek immediate medical attention at the nearest medical facility on course or at the finish line.
The Williams Route 66 Marathon offers 16 Gatorade/water stops on the marathon course. There are more than adequate amounts to ensure hydration under favorable conditions. If those conditions worsen, additional amounts will be prestaged and deployed, but it should be reasonable to assume that supplies may not be limitless due to logistical constraints entailed in such a distribution effort. The Williams Route 66 Marathon is committed to the safety of all of our participants, our volunteers and the community at large.

the 2nd Annual Williams route 66 Quarter Marathon More than 2,000 runners and walkers from 11 states and the Netherlands convened in downtown Tulsa for the sold-out second annual Williams Route 66 Quarter Marathon on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010. Tulsa’s hottest summer race, the Williams Route 66 Quarter Marathon officially kicked off the fall training season for the Williams Route 66 Marathon and gave participants a preview of the marathon course. Starting and finishing in the Blue Dome District, race day events included the 6.55 mile Quarter Marathon, a 5K and a one-mile fun run. Additionally, 400 participants also chose to run “The Double,” running in both the Quarter Marathon and the 5K in the same morning.
“We are very pleased that the Quarter Marathon, which was originally envisioned as a training kickoff event for the Route 66 Marathon in November, has blossomed into one of the state’s largest races. In just two years, Tulsa has helped us turn it into an event that can stand on its own.” Chris Lieberman,
Executive Director of Tulsa Route 66 Marathon, Inc.
Scott MacPherson was the overall winner of the Quarter Marathon, finishing in a time of 33:01. Amanda Erwin was the female winner of the Quarter Marathon, after finishing in 45:09. Jerry Faulkner crossed the finish line first for the 5K race in 16:02. The 5K female winner, with a time of 20:19, was Lisa Lake. Winners of “The Double” were Faulkner, finishing in 52:31, and Muge Park, with a time of 1:11:34.
In addition to 2,000 runners, more than 400 community members volunteered time to register participants, man Gatorade stops and pass out medals. Volunteers also stayed late to clean up after the race, ensuring that downtown Tulsa was just as it was before the 7:30 a.m. start time. Additionally, the course included nine entertainment acts including the bands Blue Flames, Atomic 22, Ganzar, Swan and Sword, ReAgent and Waving Not Drowning. Sponsoring companies Williams and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma both volunteered as groups to support the race and be involved in a downtown community event. “Our employees volunteered today as well as participated,” said Nicole Amend, assistant manager for public relations at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. “We had about 50 people dressed in blue to support the runners at a water stop. We have enjoyed being a part of the Route 66 events – it’s a great activity to get involved with to support health and fitness in Tulsa.”
FEATURE STORIES
MORE THAN 2,000 Run
To further preview the fall races at the Quarter Marathon, race organizers unveiled the 2010 marathon medal design. Each finisher of the marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay will receive a medal specially-designed for that particular race. The 2010 medals draw on the history of Route 66 while incorporating the modern aspect of the race. Classic cars and chrome wheels inspired the design, and the marathon and half marathon medals include a spinning feature, mimicking a wheel in motion. visit www.Quartermarathon.com to learn more about the race.

Tulsa revitalized
With nearly $1 billion recently invested in downtown Tulsa, the landscape has been transformed. A new arena and baseball stadium, renovated hotels and restored attractions, numerous new venues, nightlife and entertainment options make downtown Tulsa a destination on its own.
BRADY ARTS DISTRICT
Along with art galleries, shops, restaurants and nightclubs, the Brady Arts District is home to two historic entertainment venues. The Brady Theater, originally designed to serve as the city’s Municipal Auditorium in 1914, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today, “The Old Lady on Brady” still hosts a wide variety of concerts and theatrical productions. Cain’s Ballroom, known as the birthplace of Western Swing and the Carnegie Hall of Western Music, is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From Bob Wills and Patsy Cline to Van Halen, The Police and INXS, the grand ballroom continues to attract an audience as diverse as the music that attracts them.
BLUE DOME DISTRICT
The Blue Dome District is another center for downtown nightlife. Once a 1920’s gas station attracting Route 66 travelers with its Art Deco blue dome, this gem is now the place to enjoy pubs, restaurants and regional bands. Several festivals take place here including the Blue Dome Arts Festival, St. Patrick’s Day Festival and the Williams Route 66 Quarter Marathon.

GREENWOOD DISTRICT
Once called “Black Wall Street,” Tulsa’s historic Greenwood District welcomed its newest resident last year with the completion of ONEOK Field, the downtown baseball stadium and home to the Tulsa Drillers. The stadium supports further development with new venues in completion. Artifacts from the historic district’s past can be found at the Greenwood Cultural Center and the Mabel B. Little Heritage Center, and heard at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame located in the Jazz Depot in the city’s core business district. Other unique entertainment districts include:
CHERRY STREET
Cherry Street is a seven-block area of 15th Street between Peoria and Utica that offers shops, bistros and cafes during the day and bars offering a vibrant nightlife in the evening.
BROOKSIDE
Brookside, Peoria Avenue between 33rd and 51st Streets, is another popular nightlife venue. Here, you’ll find dining, dancing and trendy clubs with sushi bars near biker bars and indie coffee shops near martini lounges.

Our Charity, the Tulsa Area United Way Each year, the board of directors of the Tulsa Route 66 Marathon, Inc., donate a portion of proceeds to the Tulsa Area United Way, which provides services to more than 726,000 individuals annually through its 61 partner agencies in Creek, Okmulgee, Osage, Rogers, Tulsa and Wagoner Counties. In the last 86 years, TAUW has invested more than $568 million in the Tulsa area. “The board of directors chose to support the Tulsa Area United Way during the inaugural year of the marathon, and we have supported them each year, including this year’s fifth anniversary races,” said Chris Lieberman, Executive Director of Tulsa Route 66 Marathon, Inc. “We wished to spread the profits of the marathon across the community to help as many different groups as possible, and the Tulsa Area United Way’s amazing history of success made this organization the obvious choice.” TAUW uses a comprehensive community-based decision making process to determine how funds will be invested in the community. This year, over 150 trained volunteers invested more than 4,000 hours analyzing the needs of the community and studying the effectiveness of local programs; all to ensure that contributions have the greatest possible impact. As human service needs grow and change over time, this process allows the TAUW to direct resources where they will do the most good.

85 years
“We are so appreciative of the organizers of the Williams Route 66 Marathon for their spirit of community and enabling us to reach a broader audience. As we work toward this year’s goal of $24+ million, it is vital that we work together to enable our 61 partner agencies to continue to provide critical services to people in the Tulsa area.” MARK GRAHAM,
President and CEO of the Tulsa Area United Way
TAUW has partnered with the Williams Route 66 Marathon since inception to assist with the planning and recruitment of volunteers needed to host the race. This year, TAUW employees and friends will wear Team Grundy shirts to honor Randy Grundy, a TAUW employee and former race volunteer director, who recently lost a battle with melanoma. The team will also have volunteers at the finish line handing out Gatorade, medals, and blankets to finishers.

Runner’s health improves, one step at a time They say a picture is worth a thousand words. If so, Williams employee Penny Dye is the picture of health. But that wasn’t always the case. A few years ago, Penny battled high cholesterol and blood pressure. That’s when she decided to make some changes. Inspired by her family, Penny started running. Now, she’s competing in races, her health is on the right track and she feels great. We’re proud to support the Williams Route 66 Marathon. Congratulations to all participants.
