FRP Composites for Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Structures

Koichi Maekawa, Tetsuya Ishida and Toshiharu Kishi, all at University of Tokyo, Japan

A Guide to Fundamentals and Design for Repair and Retrofit

Increases in computer power have now enabled engineers to combine materials science with structural mechanics in the design and the assessment of concrete structures. The techniques developed have become especially useful for the performance assessment of such structures under coupled mechanistic and environmental actions. This allows effective management of infrastructure over a much longer life cycle, thus satisfying the requirements for durability and sustainability.

Series: Structural Engineering: Mechanics and Design High strength fibre composites (FRPs) have been used with civil structures since the 1980s, mostly in the repair, strengthening and retrofitting of concrete structures. This has attracted considerable research, and the industry has expanded exponentially in the last decade. Design guidelines have been developed by professional organizations in a number of countries including USA, Japan, Europe and China, but until now designers have had no publication which provides practical guidance or accessible coverage of the fundamentals. This book fills this void. It deals with the fundamentals of composites, and basic design principles, and provides step-by-step guidelines for design. Its main theme is the repair and retrofit of un-reinforced, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures using carbon, glass and other high strength fibre composites. In the case of beams, the focus is on their strengthening for flexure and shear or their stiffening. The main interest with columns is the improvement of their ductility; and both strengthening and ductility improvement of un-reinforced structures are covered. Methods for evaluating the strengthened structures are presented. Step-by-step procedures are set out, including flow charts, for the various structural components, and design examples and practice problems. As infrastructure ages worldwide, and its demolition and replacement becomes less of an option, the need for repair and retrofit of existing facilities will increase. Selected Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Constituent Materials 3. Fabrication Techniques 4. Common Repair Systems 5. Flexure: Reinforced Concrete 6. Flexure: Prestressed Concrete 7. Shear in Beams 8. Columns 9. Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites Hota V.S. GangaRao, Narendra Taly and P.V. Vijay Although the use of composites has increased in many industrial, commercial, medical, and defence applications, there is a lack of technical literature that examines composites in conjunction with concrete construction. Fulfilling the need for a comprehensive, explicit guide, Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites presents specific information necessary for designing concrete structures with fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites as a substitute for steel reinforcement and for using FRP fabrics to strengthen concrete members. In a reader-friendly, design-oriented manner, this book discusses the analysis, design, durability, and serviceability of concrete members reinforced with FRP. The authors first introduce the elements that constitute composites-the structural constituent and matrix-and discuss how composites are manufactured. Following an examination of the durability of FRP composites that contain fibres, such as glass, carbon, or aramid, the book illustrates how FRP external reinforcement systems (FRP-ER) can be used for enhancing the strength and stiffness of concrete structures using theory and design principles. The concluding chapter concentrates on serviceability aspects of concrete members internally reinforced with FRP. 2006: 234x156: 400pp Hb: 978-0-8247-5829-5: £98.00 eBook: 978-1-4200-2019-9

High-Strength Concrete A Practical Guide Michael A. Caldarone, CTL Group, USA This practical book from a highly experienced author presents clearly the means and methods for designing, producing and using high-strength concrete. High-strength concrete offers many benefits. Higher compressive strengths allow for a reduction in the cross-sectional dimensions of columns and walls in buildings. Its greater stiffness allows for increasing building heights while controlling sway and occupant comfort. Civil structures such as bridges have benefited from greater span lengths, shallower beam sections, wider girder spacing, and extended service life. Illustrated with real life examples, through documented case histories, High-Strength Concrete will be a valuable resource for contractors, producers, inspection agencies, as well as engineers and researchers. Yet it can be resisted by using test methods and relevant models for service life prediction. Resistance of Concrete to Chloride Ingress sets out current understanding of chloride transport mechanisms, test methods and prediction models. It describes basic mechanisms and theories, and classifies the commonly used parameters and their units which express chloride and its transport properties in concrete. Laboratory test methods and in-field applicable test methods, including precision results from inter-laboratory comparison tests, are then outlined. Some of the fundamentals of models are explained, and the different types of models are then analyzed theoretically and critically. Analytical and probabilistic approaches are used to analyze the sensitivity of various models and the results from a benchmarking evaluation of different models are presented and discussed. Guidelines for the practical use of test methods and models are given, including tests for in-situ applications, and test methods validated by the precision results are detailed. The book draws to a large extent on the Chlortest project, which involved seventeen partners from ten European countries, and should serve as an authoritative guide. Selected Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Chloride Transport in Concrete 3. Test Methods and Precision Results 4. Modelling of Chloride Ingress 5. Evaluation of Models 6. Guidelines for Practical. Use of Test Methods. NEW 2ND EDITION

Cement-Based Composites Materials, Mechanical Properties and Performance Andrzej M. Brandt, Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Poland Cement-Based Composites takes a different approach from most other books in the field by viewing concrete as an advanced composite material, and by considering the properties and behaviour of cement-based materials from this stance. It deals particularly, but not exclusively, with newer forms of cement-based materials.

Sprayed Concrete Lined Tunnels Alun Thomas, Mott MacDonald, UK Practising engineers on site, in the design office or in client organizations will find this book an excellent introduction to the design and construction of sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels. The complex behaviour of the early age sprayed concrete requires careful management. This book covers all aspects of SCL tunnelling – from the constituents of sprayed concrete to detailed design and management during construction. Although there is a close interdependence between all the facets of sprayed concrete, few engineers have the right breadth of experience and expertise, and this urgently needs to be transferred to the wider engineering community. Selected Contents: 1. What is an SCL Tunnel? 2. Sprayed Concrete 3. Construction Methods 4. Design Approaches 5. Design Tools 6. Construction Management 7. Case Studies 2008: 234x156: 264pp: 50 tables, 81 line drawings, 35 halftones Hb: 978-0-415-36864-3: £69.99 eBook: 978-0-203-02899-5 US $139.98
