This book makes an important contribution to current debates surrounding democracy in Iran, exploring a wide range of issues including the economy, finance, politics, the media, population and the position of women.

Camron Michael Amin, University of Michigan-Dearborn, USA Series: Global Realities In this book, Camron Amin provides a rich yet concise portrait of Iranian society through the lens of globalization. How is economic and cultural globalization affecting Iranians? How are the nation’s two chief natural resources, militant Islam and oil, tied into larger supraregional economic and political currents? To answer this, Amin, a historian, traces the broad outlines of Iranian history, focusing in particular on Shi’ism and nationalism, the dominant faith there. Shi’ism sets it apart from surrounding Sunni regimes, and its nationalism has certainly been a potent global force for decades. He also contrasts Iran’s intense nationalism with its substantial ethnic diversity. August 2008: 5-1/2 x 8-1/2: 208pp Hb: 978-0-415-95247-7: £60.00 Pb: 978-0-415-95248-4: £18.99

The election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the presidency of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the summer of 2005 thrust Iran into the international limelight in a way that few would have predicted. Robust, confrontational and given to bombastic rhetoric, Ahmadinejad has drawn condemnation from the West and praise from the Middle Eastern street in almost equal measure. This Paper looks at the details of his political rise and assesses his presidency to date within the context of the dynamics of Iranian politics. Examining the key themes of his presidency, it assesses the effectiveness of his policies and analyzes his populist approach, in particular his use of nationalism and the cult of the Twelfth Imam. The author argues that Ahmadinejad, far from retrenching the conservative values of the early revolution, is very much a product of the social and political changes which have occurred since the end of the Iran–Iraq War; that his populism in both politics and economics, along with the maintenance of a confrontational posture abroad, represents an ad hoc, and somewhat incoherent, attempt to disguise the growing contradictions which afflict the Islamic Republic, and the conservative vision of an unaccountable Islamic autocracy in the face of growing dissatisfaction, especially among key sections of the élite. Selected Contents: Introduction Part 1: The Background to Ahmadinejad’s Rise 1. The Rafsanjani and Khatami Presidencies 2. The Triumph of the Authoritarians Part 2: The ‘Third Islamic Revolution’ 3. The Ahmadinejad Presidency: Image and Foreign Policy 4. The Ahmadinejad Presidency: Domestic Policy. Conclusion January 2008: 234x156: 104pp Pb: 978-0-415-45486-5: £15.99

’Bassam Tibi is a twenty-first century Martin Luther of Islam. His plea for a return to the open, tolerant, creative Islam that served as a beacon of progress for humankind a millennium ago offers the only real alternative to a jihadism that not only threatens world peace but also reinforces the root cause of jihadism – humiliation, as the Islamic world falls further behind the West, East Asia, and now India.’ – Lawrence E. Harrison, Director, Cultural Change Institute, The Fletcher School Tufts University, USA. Bassam Tibi provides a broad ranging assessment of political Islam in the world, in all its various manifestations. In particular he focuses on Europe which is also home to a significant Islamic minority. Whilst rejecting the Clash of Civilizations theory the author clearly demonstrates the growing conflict and incompatibility between Islamist movements and European democracy. A practicing Muslim himself, Bassam Tibi, makes clear the vital importance of developing a Euro Islam that will peacefully accommodate religious beliefs within an inclusive democratic European culture. The Ghaznavid and Seljuk Turks Poetry as a Source for Iranian History

Carole Hillenbrand, University of Edinburgh, UK This series publishes important studies dealing with the history of Iran and Turkey in the period 1000-1700 AD. This period is significant because it heralds the advent of large numbers of nomadic Turks from Central Asia into the Islamic world. Their influence was felt particularly strongly in Iran and Turkey, territories which they permanently transformed. The series presents translations of medieval Arabic and Persian texts which chronicle the history of the medieval Turks and Persians, and also publishes scholarly monographs which handle themes of medieval Turkish and Iranian history such as historiography, nomadisation and folk Islam.
