Series: Contemporary Inter-American Relations

Series: Contemporary Inter-American Relations

Drawing on the research and experience of fifteen internationally recognized Latin America scholars, this insightful text presents an overview of inter-American relations during the first decade of the twenty-first century. This unique collection identifies broad changes in the international system that have had significant effects in the Western Hemisphere, including issues of politics and economics, the securitization of U.S. foreign policy, balancing U.S. primacy, the wider impact of the world beyond the Americas, especially the rise of China, and the complexities of relationships between neighbors.

Contemporary U.S.-Latin American Relations focuses on the near-neighbors of the United States — Mexico, Cuba, the Caribbean and Central America — as well as the larger countries of South America—including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. Each chapter addresses a country’s relations with the United States, and each considers themes that are unique to that country’s bilateral relations as well as those themes that are more general to the relations of Latin America as a whole. This cohesive and accessible volume is required reading for Latin American politics students and scholars alike. Selected Contents: 1. Series: Contemporary Inter-American Relations

A great power and a weaker, rival neighbor can eventually have normal relations. Prior to 1959, Cuba and the United States didn’t have normal relations and amid the Cold War, Cuba’s alliance with the Soviet Union made U.S.-Cuba normality even more elusive. What the United States and Cuba now face is relating to each other as normally as possible, a task made all the more difficult by the shadow of the Cold War. After 1989, regime change returned to the heart of U.S.-Cuba policy, a major obstacle for Washington-Havana dialogue. In turn, Cuban leaders have generally shirked their responsibility in doing their part to ease the fifty-year enmity with the United States.

This book systematically covers the background of U.S.-Cuban relations after the Cold War and tensions into the twenty-first century. The authors explore the future of this strained relationship under Obama’s presidency and in a post-Castro Cuba. Selected Contents: 1. The United States and Cuba Have Never Had Normal Relations 2. ’Next Christmas in Havana’ 3. ’Half Drunk and Throwing Bottles at Each Other’ 4. ’We Need to De-Americanize the Problem of Cuba’ 5. ’The Policy We’ve Had in Place for 50 Years Hasn’t Worked’ 6. Conclusion

’Based on extensive fieldwork in Cuba and the US, Eckstein shows that immigrant incorporation and enduring homeland involvements are cohort specific — how Cubans feel about their homeland and what they want to do about it depends upon when they leave and what they leave with. Her research also shows how the same group settles differently in different contexts of reception. A must-read for migration scholars, Latin Americanists, and policymakers alike.’ - Peggy Levitt, Wellesley College, USA This nuanced book offers a rare in-depth analysis of Cuban immigrants’ social, cultural, economic, and political adaptation, their transformation of Miami into the ’northernmost Latin American city,’ and their cross-border engagement and homeland impact.

Operation Gatekeeper and Beyond The War On ’Illegals’ and the Remaking of the U.S. – Mexico Boundary Joseph Nevins, Vassar College, USA

This is a major revision and update of Nevins’ earlier classic and is an ideal text for use with undergraduate students in a wide variety of courses on immigration, transnational issues, and the politics of race, inclusion and exclusion. Not only has the author brought his subject completely up to date, but as a ’case’ of increasing economic integration and liberalization along with growing immigration control, the US / Mexico Border and its history is put in a wider global context of similar developments elsewhere.

A companion website is available at www.routledge.com/textbooks/9780415996945. The companion website contains key U.S. government documents related to the boundary and immigration enforcement strategy; reports from non-partisan research entities and non-governmental organizations that evaluate enforcement from a civil and human rights perspective; and studies that investigate migrant deaths in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. There are also photo essays, including one related to deportations and another to California’s Border Field State Park, for which the site also includes historic photos and other resources. Finally, the site has links to websites—from U.S. government agencies involved in boundary and immigrant policing, to humanitarian and border, migrant, and human rights organizations. Selected Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Nation-Building in the Borderlands: Constructing the U.S.-Mexico Boundary 3. Generating Difference in San Diego-Tijuana 4. Sharpening the Divide: From Border to Boundary 5. Producing the Crisis: The Emergence of Operation Gatekeeper 6. The Ideological Roots of the Illegal as Threat and the Boundary as Protector 7. politics and international relations Leftovers

Global Economy Contested

Tales of the Latin American Left

Power and Conflict across the International Division of Labour

Edited by Jorge G. Castañeda and Marco A. Morales, both at New York University, USA

Edited by Marcus Taylor, Queen’s University, Canada

’This book will surely not be the last word written on the new Latin American left. But it offers several important contributions for those who want to understand the most recent set of surprises and puzzles that Latin America has offered the scholarly community.’ - Matthew R. Cleary, Syracuse University, USA

Over a decade ago, Jorge Castañeda wrote the classic Utopia Unarmed, which offered a penetrating and comprehensive account of the Latin American left’s fate at the end of the Cold War. Since then, the left across Latin America has travelled in paths no one could have predicted. Latin American nations from Mexico to Argentina wavered for years between leftism and American-supported neoliberalism, but in recent years the left has experienced a tremendous resurgence throughout the region. However, the left is not unified, and as Castañeda, Morales, and their contributors show, it has followed two distinct paths – a more cosmopolitan style leftism, exemplified by Brazil and Chile, and a left fuelled by populist nationalism that has clear debts to Perón or Cárdenas, and is most evident in Venezuela, Mexico’s PRD, Bolivia, and Argentina. Leftovers comprehensively updates this very important story, with country and area specialists contributing. Selected Contents: Part 1: Revisting the Utopia 1. Democratization and Market Reform in Developing and Transitional Countries Think Tanks as Catalysts James G. McGann, University of Pennsylvania, USA

Forthcoming

Series: Routledge Research in Comparative Politics

The Political Economy of Latin America

This book explores the pivotal role of think tanks in the democratization and economic reform movements by evaluating their overall effect on the transformation process in developing and transitional countries around the world.

Reflections on Neoliberalism and Development Peter Kingstone, University of Connecticut, USA

Neoliberalism has been at the centre of enormous controversy since its first appearance in Latin America in the early 1970s. Even neoliberalism’s strongest supporters concede that it has not lived up to its promises and that growth, poverty, and inequality all have performed considerably worse than hoped.

This brief text offers an unbiased reflection on the neoliberal debate in Latin America and the institutional puzzle that underlies the region’s difficulties with democratization and development. In addition to providing an overview of this key element of the Latin American political economy, Peter Kingstone also advances an important but under-explored argument about political institutions. Kingstone offers a unique contribution by mapping out the problem of how to understand institutions, why they are created, and why Latin American ones function the way they do. Selected Contents: 1. Markets, States, and the Challenge of Development in Latin America 2. Import-Substitution Industrialization and the Great Transformation in Latin America 3. Neoliberalism and its Discontents 4. The Two Lefts and the Return of the State 5. Government, Markets and Institutions—Reflections on Development

James G. McGann assesses twenty-three think tanks, located in nine countries and four regions of the world - Chile, Peru, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa, Botswana, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam - that have most impacted political and economic transitions in their respective countries. The author examines the role they played in the process of democratization and market reform during the late 80s and 90s and identifies the importance of think tanks in these processes by evaluating their overall effect on the policymaking process. He argues in the early stages of a transition from an authoritarian regime to an open and democratic society the activities of think tanks are especially critical, and they have provided a civil society safety net to support these fragile democracies. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of political science, democratization, development, economic development and civil society. Selected Contents: 1. Introduction Part 1: Theoretical Framework 2. Democratization and Market Reform 3. Think Tanks and Economic and Market Transitions Part 2: Case Studies 4. Chile 5. Peru 6. Poland 7. Unspeakable Truths Transitional Justice and the Challenge of Truth Commissions Priscilla B. Hayner, International Center for Transitional Justice In a sweeping review of forty truth commissions, Priscilla Hayner delivers a definitive exploration of the global experience in official truth-seeking after widespread atrocities. When Unspeakable Truths was first published in 2001, it quickly became a classic, helping to define the field of truth commissions and the broader arena of transitional justice. This second edition is fully updated and expanded, covering twenty new commissions formed in the last ten years, analyzing new trends, and offering detailed charts that assess the impact of truth commissions and provide comparative information not previously available. Placing the increasing number of truth commissions within the broader expansion in transitional justice, Unspeakable Truths surveys key developments and new thinking in reparations, international justice, healing from trauma, and other areas. This book will help to define how these issues are addressed in the future. Selected Contents: 1. Introduction 2. The Politics of Central American Integration Rafael A. Sánchez Sánchez Since its inception in the 1960s to the regional negotiations in the 1990s and onwards, Central American integration has been a process characterized by both dramatic advances and setbacks. This book provides a theoretical explanation of this ebb and flow, examining different stages including the military conflicts of the 1980s, the subsequent Esquipulas peace process, and the relaunch of integration during the 1990s under the System of Central American Integration (SICA). Sánchez Sánchez’s analysis focuses on the policies and preferences of the larger states of the region, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala, and argues that integration relies on intergovernmental bargaining. Interviews, historical and comparative data are presented in a format invaluable for students and teachers concerned with comparative regional integration, as well as for those seeking a greater understanding of contemporary Central American regional and international politics and development.

’This ground-breaking study of truth commissions is essential reading for anyone interested in taking stock of one of the most common measures of transitional justice. His findings, that truth commissions have negative effects on human rights in the near term, and negligible impact on democratization, should be carefully considered by practitioners and scholars of transitional justice.’ - Chandra Lekha Sriram, University of East London, UK This book uses a multi-method approach to examine the impact of truth commissions on subsequent human rights protection and democratic practice and features cross-national case studies on South Africa, El Salvador, Chile and Uganda.

The Unfinished Transition to Democracy in Latin America Juan Carlos Calleros-Alarcón, Mexican National Immigration Office This book examines the political evolution of the judiciary – a usually overlooked political actor – and its capacity to contribute to the process of democratic consolidation in Latin America during the 1990s. Calleros analyzes twelve countries in order to assess the independence, impartiality, political strength and efficiency of the judicial branch. The picture that emerges – with the one exception of Costa Rica – is the persistence of weak judicial systems, unable in practice to check other branches of government, including the executive and the military, while not quite effective in fully protecting human rights or in implementing due process of law guarantees. Aggravating issues, such as corruption, heavy case backlogs, overcrowding of prisons, circumvention of laws and personal vulnerability of judges, make the judiciary the least evolved of the three branches of government in the Latin American transitions to democracy. 2008: 6 x 9: 242pp Hb: 978-0-415-95763-2: $105.00 eBook: 978-0-203-88836-0 For more information, visit: www.routledge.com/9780415957632

politics and international relations Informal Coalitions and Policymaking in Latin America

Globalization, Knowledge and Labour

Ecuador in Comparative Perspective

Edited by Mario Novelli, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Anibel Ferus-Comelo, National Trade Union Initiative, India

Andrés Mejía Acosta, University of Sussex, UK This book explains how presidents achieve market-oriented reforms in a contentious political environment. Mejía Acosta argues that presidents in Ecuador adopted significant reforms by crafting informal yet functional coalitions with opposition parties in congress. This pattern of success is particularly relevant in a country known for its chronic political fragmentation and deep regional and ethnic divisions. Paradoxically, the adoption of constitutional reforms to promote governance undermined the success of informal coalitions and directly contributed to greater regime instability after 1996. Mejía Acosta’s work offers a compelling analysis of how formal and informal political institutions contribute to policy change. His far-reaching conclusions will capture the attention of political scientists and scholars of Latin America.

Education for Solidarity within Spaces of Resistance

Series: Rethinking Globalizations

Explores the place of knowledge in contemporary capitalism by raising the question of how labour movements learn, what strategies they deploy to defend their interests and to what extent processes of neoliberal globalization and the new geography of global capitalism are producing alternative geographies of labour knowledge production and practice.

Political, Economic and Multilateral Relations Edited by Jörn Dosch, University of Leeds, UK and Olaf Jacob, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Germany Series: Routledge Contemporary Asia Series Until the late 1980s, Japan was the only Asian country in Asia with notable political and economic relations. Since then, however, several Asian nations have perceived growing links with the Latin American region as a means of diversifying their political and particularly economic relations while many Latin American decision-makers have increasingly recognised the strategic importance of East Asia in their foreign policy and foreign economic policy designs. This book analyses the economic, political and socio-cultural relations between Asia and Latin America and examines their growing importance in international relations. In the first part of the book the contributors look at the policies, interests and strategies of individual Asian and Latin American states, while the second part delves into the analysis of multilateral institution-building in Asia-Latin America relations. As such, Asia and Latin America will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate scholars of comparative politics, international relations, Asian politics and Latin American politics. Protest, Repression and Political Regimes An Empirical Analysis of Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa Sabine C. Carey, University of Nottingham, UK Series: Security and Governance

This volume investigates the relationship between protest, repression and political regimes in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. Considering how different political regimes use repression and respond to popular protest, this book analyzes the relationship between protest and repression in Africa and Latin America between the late 1970s and the beginning of the twenty first century. Drawing on theories, multi-method empirical analyses and case studies, the author of this volume sets out to investigate the reciprocal dynamics between protest and repression. Distinctive features of this volume include: • quantitative analyses that highlight general trends in the protest-repression relationship

• case studies of different political regimes in Chile and Nigeria, emphasising the dynamics at the micro-level

• an emphasis on the importance of full democratization in order to reduce the risk, and intensity, of intra-state conflict

The Consolidation of Democracy

Knowledge and Power in Latin America

Carsten Q. Schneider, Central European University, Hungary

Edited by Mercedes Botto, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Argentina

Series: Democratization Studies

Series: Routledge Studies in Latin American Politics

This innovative book seeks to explain what factors account for the consolidation of young democracies in over thirty countries in Latin America and Europe throughout the last quarter of the twentieth century.

The international trade negotiations that were launched throughout Latin America in the 1990s required developing countries to seek out research that could help them make informed decisions. This book examines the complex links between the research centers and international organizations who produced the information and the governments who used it.

The Legacies of Caribbean Radical Politics

Narcos Over the Border is divided into three sections: narco-opposing force (NARCO OPFOR) organization and technology use; patterns of violence and corruption and the illicit economy; and United States response strategies. The work also includes short introductory essays, a strategic threat overview, an afterword and selected references. Specific topics covered include: advanced weaponry, internet use, kidnappings and assassinations, torture, beheadings, and occultism, cartel and gang evolutionary patterns, drug trafficking, street taxation, corruption, and border firefights.

The year 2009 marked the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution and the thirtieth anniversary of the Grenadian and Nicaraguan Revolutions, and as such offered an occasion to assess the complex legacies of revolutionary politics in the Caribbean. This volume considers what we might learn from such revolutionary projects and their afterlives, from their successes and their errors. It explores what the struggles currently underway in the Caribbean share with these earlier and longer revolutionary traditions, and how they depart from them. It analyzes radical movements in Jamaica, Grenada, Cuba, Venezuela, Guadeloupe, Suriname, and Guyana, not only in their national dimensions, but in terms of their regional linkages and mutual influences. The chapters are drawn from various disciplines and a range of democratic leftist projects. They consider not only state and party politics, but also civil society, cultural politics and artistic production, strikes, and grassroots activism.

Using case studies based on the regimes of Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Peru and Uruguay, this book shows how U.S foreign policy – far from promoting long term political stability and democratic institutions – has actually undermined them. The first part of the book is an inquiry into the larger historical context in which the development of an unequal power relationship between the United States and Latin American and Caribbean nations evolved after the proliferation of the Monroe Doctrine. The region came to be seen as a contested terrain in the East-West conflict of the Cold War, and a new US-inspired ideology, the ‘National Security Doctrine’, was used to justify military operations and the hunting down of individuals and groups labelled as ‘communists’. Following on from this historical context, the book then provides an analysis of the mechanisms of state and genocidal violence is offered, demonstrating how in order to get to know the internal enemy, national armies relied on US intelligence training and economic aid to carry out their surveillance campaigns.

The Caribbean History Reader

The History of Mexico

Edited by Nicola Foote, Florida International University, USA

From Pre-Conquest to Present

Philip Russell, Independent Scholar, Texas, USA

The Caribbean is increasingly being recognized as having been at the heart of world history and global development, despite its small geographic size. It is the lynchpin of the Atlantic economy. Further, through a series of migrations, Caribbean people have come to be represented in most of the major cities of the West, and have impacted the histories of Britain, Canada, and the United States.

The Caribbean History Reader provides a thorough and up-to-date overview of Caribbean history from the pre-Columbian era to the present. It brings together a range of classic and innovative texts, and creates an introduction to Caribbean political, economic, social and cultural currents that provides an important first reference point to scholars and students alike. Latin America since Independence A History with Primary Sources Alexander Dawson, Simon Fraser University, Canada What is Latin America, after all? While histories of the ’other’ Americas often link disparate histories through revolutionary or tragic narratives, Latin America since Independence begins with the assumption that our efforts to imagine a common past for nearly thirty countries are deeply problematic. Without losing sight of chronology or regional trends, this text offers glimpses of the Latin American past through eleven carefully selected stories. Each chapter introduces students to a specific historical issue, which in turn raises questions about the history of the Americas as a whole. Key themes include: • race and citizenship

The History of Mexico: From Pre-Conquest to Present traces the last 500 years of Mexican history, from the indigenous empires that were devastated by the Spanish conquest through the election of 2006 and its aftermath. The book offers a straightforward chronological survey of Mexican history from the pre-colonial times to the present, and includes a glossary as well as numerous tables and images for comprehensive study. In lively and engaging prose, Philip Russell guides readers through major themes that still resonate today including: • the role of women in society • environmental change

• the evolving status of Mexico’s indigenous people • African slavery and the role of race • government economic policy • foreign relations with the United States and others. The companion website provides many useful student tools including multiple choice questions, extra book chapters, and links to online resources, as well as digital copies of the maps from the book. Foreign Aid as Foreign Policy The Alliance for Progress in Latin America Jeffrey Taffet, United States Merchant Marine Academy, USA

Foreign Aid as Foreign Policy presents a wide-ranging, thoughtful analysis of the most significant economic-aid program of the 1960s, John F. Kennedy’s Alliance for Progress. Introduced in 1961, the program was a ten-year, multi-billion-dollar foreign-aid commitment to Latin American nations, meant to help promote economic growth and political reform, with the long-term goal of countering Communism in the region. Considering the Alliance for Progress in Chile, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia, Jeffrey F. Taffet deftly examines the programís successes and failures, providing an in-depth discussion of economic aid and foreign policy, showing how policies set in the 1960s are still affecting how the U.S. conducts foreign policy today. This study adds an important chapter to the history of US-Latin American Relations.

Origins of the Black Atlantic

2nd Edition

Edited by Laurent Dubois, Duke University, USA and Julius S. Scott, University of Michigan, USA Series: Rewriting Histories

Between 1492 and 1820, about two-thirds of the people who crossed the Atlantic to the Americas were Africans. With the exception of the Spanish, all the European empires settled more Africans in the New World than they did Europeans. The vast majority of these enslaved men and women worked on plantations, and their labor was the foundation for the expansion of the Atlantic economy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Until relatively recently, comparatively little attention was paid to the perspectives, daily experiences, hopes, and especially the political ideas of the enslaved who played such a central role in the making of the Atlantic world. Over the past decades, however, huge strides have been made in the study of the history of slavery and emancipation in the Atlantic world. This collection brings together some of the key contributions to this growing body of scholarship, that can be used to understand and reconstruct the lives of these enslaved people. 2009: 6-1/8 x 9-1/4: 424pp Hb: 978-0-415-99445-3: $125.00 Pb: 978-0-415-99446-0: $38.95 For more information, visit: www.routledge.com/9780415994460

The First Maya Civilization Ritual and Power Before the Classic Period Francisco Estrada-Belli, Boston University, USA

When the Maya kings of Tikal dedicated their first carved monuments in the third century A.D., inaugurating the Classic period of Maya history that lasted for six centuries and saw the rise of such famous cities as Palenque, Copan and Yaxchilan, Maya civilization was already nearly a millennium old. Its first cities, such as Nakbe and El Mirador, had some of the largest temples ever raised in Prehispanic America, while others such as Cival showed even earlier evidence of complex rituals. The reality of this Preclassic Maya civilization has been documented by scholars over the past three decades: what had been seen as an age of simple village farming, is now known to have been the period when the Maya made themselves into one of the New World’s most innovative societies. This book discusses the most recent advances in our knowledge of the Preclassic Maya and the emergence of their rainforest civilization, with new data on settlement, political organization, architecture, iconography and epigraphy supporting a contemporary theoretical perspective that challenges prior assumptions. Contemporary Travel Writing of Latin America

The Diaspora Strikes Back

Claire Lindsay, University College London, UK

Caribeño Tales of Learning and Turning

Series: Routledge Research in Travel Writing

Juan Flores, Hunter College and CUNY Graduate Center, USA

This book considers how contemporary travelers from Latin America write their journeys at and about home. How do Latin American writers of the late twentieth-century negotiate the hybrid and volatile category of travel writing, which has been shaped in large part by myriad Euro-American travelers? How do they engage with the enduring myths about the region perpetuated by their imperial/ist predecessors? And, if not journeys of expansion or exploration, on precisely what kinds of ‘travel’ do their own journeys rest? Drawing on ideas from many disciplines, including anthropology, philosophy, sociology, literary and cultural studies, this book considers contemporary journey narratives from Latin America through a series of case studies concerning four key sites of travel, each of which engenders particular forms of travel and travel narrative: Patagonia, the Andes, Mexico and the Mexico-US border. This book thus explores the complex practice and representation of journeys in the region by writers including Luis Sepúlveda, Mempo Giardinelli, Andrés Ruggeri, Ana García Bergua, Silvia Molina, María Luisa Puga, Rubén Martínez and Luis Alberto Urrea. In doing so, it explores questions relating to mobility, representation, and globalization that are of widespread concern across the world today.

In The Diaspora Strikes Back the eminent ethnic and cultural studies scholar Juan Flores flips the process on its head: what happens to the home country when it is being constantly fed by emigrants returning from abroad? He looks at how ’Nuyoricans’ (Puerto Rican New Yorkers) have transformed the home country, introducing hip hop and modern New York culture to the Caribbean island. While he focuses on New York and Mayaguez (in Puerto Rico), the model is broadly applicable. Indians introducing contemporary British culture to India; New York Dominicans bringing slices of New York culture back to the Dominican Republic; Mexicans bringing LA culture (from fast food to heavy metal) back to Guadalajara and Monterrey. This ongoing process is both massive and global, and Flores’ novel account will command a significant audience across disciplines.

Transnational Negotiations in Caribbean Diasporic Literature Remitting the Text Kezia Page, Colgate University, USA

Planning Latin America’s Capital Cities 1850-1950 Edited by Arturo Almandoz, Universidad Simón Bolívar, Venezuela Series: Planning, History and Environment Series

Series: Routledge Research in Postcolonial Literatures Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Page casts light on the role of citizenship, immigration, and transnational mobility in Caribbean migrant and diaspora fiction. Page’s historical, socio-cultural study responds to the general trend in migration discourse that presents the Caribbean experience as unidirectional and uniform across the geographical spaces of home and diaspora. She argues that engaging the Caribbean diaspora and the massive waves of migration from the region that have punctuated its history, involves not only understanding communities in host countries and the conflicted identities of second generation subjectivities, but also interpreting how these communities interrelate with and affect communities at home. In particular, Page examines two socio-economic and political practices, remittance and deportation, exploring how they function as tropes in migrant literature, and as ways of theorizing such literature.

In this first comprehensive work in English to describe the building of Latin America’s capital cities in the postcolonial period, Arturo Almandoz and his contributors demonstrate how Europe and France in particular shaped their culture, architecture and planning until the United States began to play a part in the 1930s.

Citizenship, Democracy and Public Space in Latin America Clara Irazábal, University of Southern California, USA

Latsploitation, Exploitation Cinemas, and Latin America Edited by Victoria Ruétalo, University of Alberta, Canada and Dolores Tierney, University of Sussex, UK Series: Routledge Advances in Film Studies Exploring the much neglected area of Latin American exploitation cinema, this anthology challenges established continental and national histories and canons which often exclude exploitation cinema due to its perceived ‘low’ cultural status. It argues that Latin American exploitation cinema makes an important aesthetic and social contribution to the larger body of Latin American cinema – often competing with Hollywood and more mainstream national cinemas in terms of popularity. 2009: 6 x 9: 344pp Hb: 978-0-415-99386-9: $128.00 eBook: 978-0-203-87892-7 For more information, visit: www.routledge.com/9780415993869

Series: Planning, History and Environment Series

Clara Irazábal and her contributors explore the urban history of some of Latin Americaís great cities through studies of their public spaces and what has taken place there. The avenues and plazas of Mexico City, Havana, Santo Domingo, Caracas, Bogotaì, São Paulo, Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires have been the backdrop for extraordinary, history-making events. While some argue that public spaces are a prerequisite for the expression, representation and reinforcement of democracy, they can equally be used in the pursuit of totalitarianism. Indeed, public spaces, in both the past and present, have been the site for the contestation by ordinary people of various stances on democracy and citizenship. By exploring the use and meaning of public spaces in Latin American cities, this book sheds light on contemporary definitions of citizenship and democracy in the Americas.

Sporting Cultures

Best Human Resource Management Practices in Latin America

Hispanic Perspectives on Sport, Text and the Body Edited by David Wood and P. Louise Johnson, both at University of Sheffield, UK Series: Sport in the Global Society

Edited by Anabella Davila, Monterrey TEC, Mexico and Marta M. Elvira, Universidad de Navarra, Madrid, Spain.

The essays that comprise this book mark new territory in the study of sport in the Hispanic world, a key site of cultural experience for the populations of Latin America, the United States and the Iberian Peninsula. The scope of the volume is the exploration of the representation and interaction of sport / text / body in a variety of cultural forms in Latin America, Spain and the chicano population of the USA. As such, it opens a path for further study of an area that is experiencing significant growth in the international academic community. The book consists of 11 chapters by different authors, and an introduction, totalling c.85,000 words. The essays deal with the key sporting practices of the Hispanic world, including boxing, baseball, athletics, Olympic movements and football, approaching them as physical manifestations in their own right and as cultural representations (via media images, poetry, narrative fiction, murals) through the research methodologies of the humanities and social sciences.

Latin America today presents a dynamic but challenging business landscape. Although foreign investment in the region has risen, Asia’s increasing role in the global economy is a challenge to Latin America’s competitiveness. At the same time, Translatina firms – Latin American trans-national companies – continue to grow in capital and influence.

This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport

Representing the Nation Sport and Spectacle in Post-Revolutionary Mexico Claire Brewster and Keith Brewster, both at Newcastle University, UK Series: Sport in the Global Society - Historical perspectives Mexico City’s staging of the 1968 Olympic Games should have been a pinnacle in Mexico’s post-revolutionary development: a moment when a nation at ease with itself played proud host to a global celebration of youthful vigour. Representing the Nation argues, however, that from the moment that the city won the bid, the Mexican elite displayed an innate lack of trust in their countrymen. Beautification of the capital city went beyond that expected of a host. It included the removal of undesirables from sight and the sponsorship of public information campaigns designed to teach citizens basic standards of civility and decency. The book’s contention is that these and other measures exposed a chasm between what decades of post-revolutionary socio-cultural reforms had sought to produce, and what members of the elite believed their nation to be. While members of the Organising Committee deeply resented international scepticism of Mexico’s ability to stage the Games, they shared a fear that with the eyes of the world upon them, their compatriots would reveal Mexico’s aspirations to first world status to be a fraud. Using a detailed analysis of Mexico City’s preparations for the Olympic Games, we show how these tensions manifested themselves in the actions of the Organising Committee and government authorities. Javier Muñoz-Basols, University of Oxford, UK, Marianne David, Trinity School, USA and Olga Nñez Piñeiro, University of Westminster, UK

A Course in Translation Method: Spanish to English

‘An invaluable, highly original and methodically sound approach to correcting and eliminating common, yet difficult-to-eliminate errors.’ – Manuel Delgado, Bucknell University, USA False friends, idiomatic expressions, gender and capitalization are just some of the areas that cause confusion for students of Spanish. Learning how to avoid the common errors that arise repeatedly in these areas is an essential step for successful language learning.

Speed Up Your Spanish is a unique and innovative resource that identifies and explains such errors, thereby enabling students of Spanish to learn from their mistakes while enhancing their understanding of the Spanish language.

Louise Haywood, Michael Thompson, University of Durham, UK and Sándor Hervey Series: Thinking Translation

A variety of translation issues are addressed, including: • cultural differences • register and dialect • grammatical differences • genre.

Each of the nine chapters focuses on a grammatical category where English speakers typically make mistakes in Spanish. Each chapter is divided into sections that classify the concepts and errors into subcategories. Full explanations are provided throughout with clear, comprehensive examples and exercises to help the learner gain an in-depth understanding of Spanish grammar and usage.

With a sharper focus, clearer definitions and an increased emphasis on up-to-date ‘real world’ translation tasks, this second edition features a wealth of relevant illustrative material taken from a wide range of sources, both Latin American and Spanish, including:

Key features:

• journalistic and informative texts

• carefully selected grammar topics and examples based on the most commonly made errors
