Focus: Afro-Caribbean Music

Focus: Music of Northeast Brazil
Katherine J. Hagedorn, Pomona College, USA
Larry Crook, University of Florida, USA
Focus: Afro-Caribbean Music spotlights the religious performance practices that influence many popular and folk music traditions throughout the Caribbean and the Americas, as well as globally. Myriad styles of music – including rumba, salsa, latin jazz, and hip-hop – have their roots in the religious performance traditions of the African diaspora. It is the first book of its kind to focus specifically on musico-religious performance in a comparative Caribbean context within an engaging and accessible work designed as a core text for courses on musical traditions of the Caribbean. Beyond the book’s specific musico-religious emphasis, it provides students and their professors with a useful and thought-provoking way to understand the roots of Caribbean popular and folk musics, as well as a context for discussions about religion, race, language, gender, embodied performance, and political dynamics.
Focus: Music of Northeast Brazil examines the historical and contemporary manifestations of the music of Brazil, a country with a musical landscape that is layered with complexity and diversity. Based on the author’s field research during the past twenty years, the book describes and analyzes the social/historical contexts and contemporary musical practices of Afro-Brazilian religion, selected Carnival traditions, Bahia’s black cultural renaissance, the traditions of rural migrants, and currents in new popular music. ETHNOMUSICOLOGY
The Ethnomusicologists’ Cookbook
The Cultural Study of Music
NEW
Complete Meals from Around the World
A Critical Introduction
Sean Williams, Evergreen State College, USA
Edited by Martin Clayton, Trevor Herbert and Richard Middleton
The Horse-head Fiddle and the Cosmopolitan Reimagination of Tradition in Mongolia
’The most important thing to remember about The Ethnomusicologists’ Cookbook is that you must under no circumstances read it while hungry ... In its practical and idealogical approach, the book stays true to an idea that is arguably more vital and obvious in cultures other than our own: both meals and music are a social affair that binds families, friends and nations together.’ – The Vancouver Voice ‘To savour better its fascinating essays on culinary rituals across the globe, this cookbook is one to pore over in the living room instead of the kitchen. Recipes are attached, but are not the primary pleasure; instead, it is learning about the ceremonial drinking songs of Namibia, or the meals that celebrate the return of the swallows in Korea. However, the recipes serve as worthy accompaniments to the accomplished essays: Dates Stuffed with Almond Paste, from Judeo-Spanish Morocco, are sweetly irresistible, and Bolivia’s addictive Avocado with Uncooked Salsa begs to be downed with a bucketful of chips.’ – Publishers Weekly
The Cultural Study of Music is an anthology of writings that serves as a textbook on music and culture. Increasingly, music is being studied as it relates to specific cultures – not only by ethnomusicologists, but by traditional musicologists as well. Drawing on writers from music, anthropology, sociology, and related fields, the book defines the field – i.e., ‘What is the relation between music and culture?’ – and then presents case studies of particular issues in world musics. 2003: 234x156: 376pp Hb: 978-0-415-93844-0: £70.00 Pb: 978-0-415-93845-7: £19.99 • AVAILABLE AS AN INSPECTION COPY

The Tokyo Hardcore Scene Jennifer Milioto Matsue, Union College, USA Series: East Asia: History, Politics, Sociology and Culture This book explores the underground Tokyo hardcore scene, ultimately asking what play as resistance through performance of the scene tells us about Japanese society in general. Jennifer Milioto Matsue highlights the complicated positioning of young adult Japanese in contemporary Japan as they negotiate both increasing social demands and increasing problems in society at large. The book offers a highly interdisciplinary look at the importance of musical scenes for expressing resistance at the turn of the twenty-first century. Within the underground Tokyo hardcore scene this resistance is expressed through play with individual and collective identity, in intimate and potentially illicit spaces, with an arguably challenging sound and performance style. Popular Music of Vietnam
Indian classical music has long been fascinating to Western audiences, most prominently since the Beatles’ sessions with Ravi Shankar in the 1960s. This fascination with the musical genre still prevails in the twenty-first century.
The Politics of Remembering, the Economics of Forgetting
Hindi Poetry in a Musical Genre examines Thumri Lyrics, a major genre of Hindustani music, from a primarily linguistic perspective. On a cultural level, it discusses the interface between devotional and secular poetry. Furthermore, it explains the impact of social and political change on the musical life of North India.
Based on the author’s research in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and other urban areas in Vietnam, this study of contemporary Vietnamese popular music explores the ways globalization and free market economics have influenced the music and subcultures of Vietnamese youth. It focuses on the conflict between the politics of remembering, nurtured by the Vietnamese Communist government, and the politics of forgetting, driven by the capitalist interests of the music industry.

Wayne Robins ‘Robins presents his [work] with enthusiasm and breezy good humour, yet manages unpretentiously to hammer home his historical points and musical opinions ... His tone is ideal for the topic and format, a welcome relief from the disproportionate number of self-important academic treatises on modern popular music.’ – Kirkus Reviews The birth of rock ‘n’ roll signalled the blossoming of a new teenage culture, dividing generations and introducing a new attitude of rebellion and independence. From Chuck Berry to the Beatles, from punk rock to hip hop, rock ‘n’ roll has continuously transformed alongside or in reaction to social, cultural, and political changes. A Brief History of Rock, Off the Record is a concise introduction to rock history and the impact it has had on American culture. It is an easy-to-read, vivid account written by one of rock’s leading critics. Pulling from personal interviews over the years, Wayne Robins interweaves the developments in rock music with his commentary on the political and social events and movements that defined their decades. 2007: 234x156: 328pp Hb: 978-0-415-97472-1: £60.00 Pb: 978-0-415-97473-8: £13.99 • AVAILABLE AS AN INSPECTION COPY $95.00

A Brief History of Rock, Off the Record
Expression in Pop-Rock Music is a collection of critical and analytical essays written by today’s top scholars on pop and rock music. Applying a wide variety of analytical techniques and critical approaches in the study of songs by artists such as Tori Amos, David Bowie, James Brown, the Cure, Genesis, Radiohead, and Frank Zappa, these essays tackle the musical text itself in coming to terms with political, social, cultural, and stylistic issues expressed in the most popular music of the past half-century. It has been expanded in its second edition to include three new essays and other additions accounting for the changes to the popular music landscape since its first edition, with particular attention paid to the rise of hip-hop and country music.
The Popular Music Studies Reader Edited by Andy Bennett, Barry Shank and Jason Toynbee The Popular Music Studies Reader maps the changing nature of popular music over the last decade and considers how popular music studies has expanded and developed to deal with these changes.

[his] book is highly recommended for Kinks and Ray Davies Fans, and everybody else!’ – New York Waste Ray Davies: Not Like Everybody Else is a critical biography of Ray Davies, with a focus on his music and his times. The book studies Davies’ work from the Kinks’ first singles through his 2006 solo album, from his rock musicals in the early 1970s to his one-man stage show in the 1990s, and from his films to his autobiography. Based on interviews with his closest associates, as well as studies of the recordings themselves, this book creates the most thorough picture of Davies’ work to date. Thomas M. Kitts situates Davies’ work in the context of the British Invasion and the growth of rock in the 1960s and 1970s, and in the larger context of English cultural history. The Day John Met Paul
On the Subjects of Popular Music
An Hour-by-Hour Account of How the Beatles Began
Richard Middleton, University of Newcastle, UK
Kevin J.H. Dettmar, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA
’Voicing the Popular already marks one of the most paradigmatic moments in popular music studies in the twenty-first century.’ – Philip V. Bohlman, Author of The Study of Folk Music in the Modern World and World Music: A Very Short Introduction
Jim O’Donnell With many new photos and an updated introduction, The Day John Met Paul, a critically-acclaimed Beatles book, re-appears in a visually stunning second edition. The book is an hour-by-hour account of the fateful day the two founding Beatles met in July 1957. But it is much more than that: it’s a spellbinding story of how fate brought together two men who would radically change the face of popular music, from its look and feel to its sound. The Day John Met Paul chronicles the first ‘Day in the Life’ of the Beatles – a day that changed the musical world.
‘Richard Middleton’s Voicing the Popular cannot but inspire profound admiration ... From Mozart’s Magic Flute to the Spice Girls his magisterial voice leads us through the multi-faceted network of modernity’s popular underside.’ – Mladen Dolar, Author of A Voice and Nothing More

It offers and develops a new theoretical matrix that can illuminate these trends in a more complex and instructive way.
Ronald D. Cohen, Indiana University Northwest, USA Series: The Basics Folk Music: The Basics gives a brief introduction to British and American folk music. Drawing upon the most recent and relevant scholarship, it focuses on comparing and contrasting the historical nature of the three aspects of understanding folk music: traditional, local performers; professional collectors; and the advent of professional performers in the twentieth century during the so-called ‘folk revival.’ Folk Music: The Basics serves as an excellent introduction to the players, the music, and the styles that make folk music an enduring and well-loved musical style. Throughout, sidebars offer studies of key folk performers, record labels, and related issues to place the general discussion in context.

MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE
2ND EDITION
Mendelssohn Essays
Eighteenth-Century Keyboard Music
R. Larry Todd, Duke University, USA
Edited by Robert Marshall
When R. Larry Todd’s biography, Mendelssohn: A Life in Music, appeared in 2003, it won acclaim from several critics as a definitive biography. In researching Mendelssohn’s life over the last two and a half decades, Todd uncovered much new information about the composer and his music, his family and his peers, and his complex reception history. Now, for the 2009 bicentenary of Mendelssohn’s birth, the author has chosen and compiled fifteen essays written between 1980 and 2005, including five previously unpublished, that examine several aspects of the composer whom Goethe and Heine likened to a second Mozart.

Mendelssohn Essays explores Mendelssohn’s precocity, his musical impressions of British culture, the role of the visual in his music, his compositional response to Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and incomplete drafts from his musical estate of three instrumental works. In addition, a group of three essays focuses on the music of Mendelssohn’s sister Fanny Hensel, perhaps the most gifted woman composer of the century, and a significant, complex figure in the formation of the Mendelssohnian style. 2007: 234x156: 336pp Hb: 978-0-415-97814-9: £60.00 Pb: 978-0-415-97815-6: £24.99

’One of the most significant texts to treat the broad range of stylistic and practical performance issues that underlie idiomatic Mozart playing ... Everyone who seeks expert insight into the content, expression and execution of Mozart’s music will find this book inspirational and indispensable.’ – Robert Levin, Harvard University, USA

Originally published in German as Interpreting Mozart on the Keyboard in 1957, this definitive work on the performance of Mozart’s works has greatly influenced students and scholars of keyboard literature and of Mozart. 2ND EDITION
Electronic and Experimental Music
Andrew Hugill, De Montfort University, UK

Handmade Electronic Music The Art of Hardware Hacking Nicolas Collins, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, USA
Technology, Music, and Culture Thom Holmes ’The book is a superlative intersection of history and practice. With its charts, pictures, historical antecedents, and wellexplained concepts, Electronic and Experimental Music is an essential resource for anyone interested in extraordinary sound.’ – Chris DeLaurenti, The Stranger
’Nicolas Collins wants to tear apart your CD player.’ – Wired Magazine ‘Here we have, at last, an electronics book that caters to people who have ideas first, and electronics second. A former technician to some of the last century’s most imaginative experimental composers, Collins offers a splendidly integrative look into the history of “sound art,” basic electronics, and junk revisioning.’ – Make Magazine ‘A brilliant, hands-on guide to electronic music making ... [Collins] never ceases to amaze me with his latest bit of music or techno-logical innovation.’ – TapeOp Magazine Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking provides a long-needed, practical, and engaging introduction for students of electronic music, installation and sound-art to the craft of making – as well as creatively cannibalizing – electronic circuits for artistic purposes. Designed for practioners and students of electronic art, it provides a guided tour through the world of electronics, encouraging artists to get to know the inner workings of basic electronic devices so they can creatively use them for their own ends. Handmade Electronic Music introduces the basics of practical circuitry while instructing the student in basic electronic principles, always from the practical point of view of an artist. It teaches a style of intuitive and sensual experimentation that has been lost in this day of prefabricated electronic musical instruments whose inner workings are not open to experimentation. It encourages artists to transcend their fear of electronic technology to launch themselves into the pleasure of working creatively with all kinds of analogue circuitry.
Electronic and Experimental Music: Technology, Music, and Culture is a revised and expanded edition of this classic work, providing a thorough treatment of the relevant history behind the marriage of technology and music that has led to the state of electronic music today. Beginning with an early history of electronic music before 1945, the book outlines key composers, inventions, and concepts, ranging from Edgard Varèse to Brian Eno; musique concrète to turntablism; and compositional techniques used in both analogue and digital synthesis. The third edition’s reader-friendly writing style, logical organization, and features provide easy access to key ideas, milestones, and concepts. Features include: • readers’ guides and summaries at the beginning and end of each chapter • innovations boxes providing a unique profile of an influential individual in the field of electronic music • playlists recommending key recordings in each musical genre mentioned in each chapter • milestone timelines summarizing the major technological and musical innovations discussed in each chapter. 2008: 246x174: 480pp Hb: 978-0-415-95781-6: £70.00 Pb: 978-0-415-95782-3: £23.99 eBook: 978-0-203-92959-9 • AVAILABLE AS AN INSPECTION COPY $115.00

New technologies, and especially the new digital technologies, mean that anyone can create music without any musical training. How do we know what is good? Sound Media From Live Journalism to Music Recording
CD
Lars Nyre, University of Bergen, Norway Sound Media considers how music recording, radio broadcasting and muzak influence people’s daily lives and introduces the many and varied creative techniques that have developed in music and journalism throughout the twentieth century. Lars Nyre starts with the contemporary cultures of sound media, and works back to the archaic soundscapes of the 1870s. The first part of the book devotes five chapters to contemporary digital media, and presents the internet, the personal computer, digital radio (news and talk) and various types of loudspeaker media (muzak, DJ-ing, clubbing and PA systems). The second part examines the historical accumulation of techniques and sounds in sound media, and presents multitrack music in the 1960s, the golden age of radio in the 1950s and back to the 1930s, microphone recording of music in the 1930s, the experimental phase of wireless radio in the 1910s and 1900s, and the invention of the gramophone and phonograph in the late nineteenth century. Sound Media includes a soundtrack CD with thirty-six examples from broadcasting and music recording in Europe and the USA, from Edith Piaf to Sarah Cox, and is richly illustrated with figures, timelines and technical drawings. 2008: 234x156: 240pp Hb: 978-0-415-39113-9: £65.00 Pb: 978-0-415-39114-6: £18.99 • AVAILABLE AS AN INSPECTION COPY $130.00

Music Publishing covers the basics of how a composition is copyrighted, published, and promoted. Taking a practical approach, the authors – one a successful music publisher and attorney, the other a songwriter and music business professor – explain in simple terms the basic concept of copyright law as it pertains to compositions. They examine the sources of income, the typical music publishing agreements, and explore some ‘myths’ about music publishing. Throughout, they give practical examples from ‘real world’ situations that illuminate both potential pitfalls and possible upsides for the working composers.

This innovative study opens up a new area in sociological and urban studies: the aural experience of the social, mediated through mobile technologies of communication. This book, in using the example of the Apple iPod, investigates the way in which we use sound to construct key areas of our daily lives. The author argues that the Apple iPod acts as an urban Sherpa for many of its users and in doing so joins the mobile army of technologies that many of us habitually use to accompany our daily lives. Through our use of such mobile and largely sound based devices, the book demonstrates how and why the spaces of the city are being transformed right in front of our ears. 2007: 234x156: 192pp Hb: 978-0-415-25751-0: £75.00 Pb: 978-0-415-25752-7: £26.99 eBook: 978-0-203-49622-0

A New Approach to Musicianship Training
The Principles and Practice of Counterpoint
Ed Sarath, University of Michigan, USA
Volume 1
Music Theory Through Improvisation presents a new approach to basic theory and musicianship training that is geared towards the diverse interests and abilities of today’s student. The book follows the same general progression of diatonic to non-diatonic harmony in conventional approaches, but integrates improvization, composition, keyboard harmony, analysis, and rhythm. The result is a broader, integrative, and hands-on context.
Douglass Green and Evan Jones, Florida State University, USA
Conventional approaches to basic musicianship (beyond the realm of performance training) have largely been oriented toward the study of common practice harmony from the Euroclassical tradition, with a heavy emphasis on four-part chorale writing. The author’s entirely new pathway places the study of harmony within improvization and composition in stylistically diverse formats. Jazz and popular music serve as important stylistic sources. Keyboard realization, geared toward students with little or no keyboard training prior to the course, is the primary mode of assimilation of harmonic materials, with subsequent written work largely based on keyboard application. This hands-on approach allows an entirely new level of assimilation to take place that can be applied across genres. Secondary dominant chords, modal mixture, modulation, altered and extended chords are essentially the same structures whether they appear in the music of Parker, Ellington, and the Beatles, or Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. By gaining command of these materials through the creative, active, and integrative approaches suggested in the book, students can then delve deeply into whatever styles they choose to pursue. Acknowledging the importance of rhythmic skills in today’s multi-ethnic musical mosaic, Music Theory Through Improvisation presents an approach to rhythmic training that derives from Indian, African, African-American, and other traditions. Supplemental materials include an audio CD and website. Companion Website at www.routledge.com/textbooks/9780415997256. Tom Pankhurst, Liverpool Hope University College, UK SchenkerGUIDE is an accessible overview of Heinrich Schenker’s complex but fascinating approach to the analysis of tonal music. The book has emerged out of the widely used website, www.SchenkerGUIDE.com, which has been offering straightforward explanations of Schenkerian analysis to undergraduate students since 2001.
The Principles and Practice of Counterpoint is a comprehensive counterpoint textbook in two volumes, Modal and Tonal. It combines practical, ‘how-to’ practice in species, sixteenth and eighteenth century counterpoint with extensive historical examination of contrapuntal works. The author, the late Douglass Green was committed to the ‘species approach’ rather than the ‘direct approach. ’The study of counterpoint was compellingly codified (as a dialogue between teacher and pupil) in Fux’s eighteenth century treatise Gradus ad Parnassum, which established the ‘species’ approach as the dominant instructional paradigm for over two hundred years. Most of the textbooks gaining prominence over the last several decades however, have modified or abandoned the progressive organization of the species approach, aiming instead to extract and introduce stylistic rules with reference directly to the music of the time. The Principles and Practice of Counterpoint provides the combination of qualities of the books presently offered for teaching Counterpoint. The volumes are accompanied by a companion website. A Guide to the Practice
An Anthology of Writings
Alfred Blatter, Curtis Institute, USA
Edited by Paul Mathews, Johns Hopkins University, USA
Teaching Music in American Society
Revisiting Music Theory: A Guide to the Practice contains the basics of music theory with the vocabulary used in harmonic and formal analysis. The book assumes few music reading skills, and progresses to include the basic materials of music from J.S. Bach to the twentieth century. Based on Alfred Blatter’s own three decades of teaching music theory, this book is aimed at a one or two year introductory course in music theory, and can serve for individual study, or as a review for graduate students returning to school. Drawing examples from well-known classical works, as well as folk and popular music, the book shows how theory is applied to practice. The book is divided into five parts. The first part introduces music notation, reviewing the basics of pitch, time, and dynamics as represented in written music. Part two introduces the concept of melody, covering modes, scales, scale degrees, and melodic form. Part three introduces harmony, dealing with harmonic progression, rhythm, and chord types. Part four addresses part writing and harmonic analysis. Finally, part five addresses musical form, and how form is used to structure a composition. Revisiting Music Theory will be a valuable textbook for students, professors, and professionals. 2007: 246x174: 352pp Hb: 978-0-415-97439-4: £80.00 Pb: 978-0-415-97440-0: £21.99 • AVAILABLE AS AN INSPECTION COPY $135.00

’Orchestration: An Anthology of Writings is a refreshing joy to read as it’s filled with many treats working professionals will appreciate.’ – Film Music Orchestration: An Anthology of Writings is designed to be a primary or ancillary text for college-level music majors. Although there are several ‘how to’ textbooks aimed at this market, there is little available that traces the history of orchestration through the writings of composers themselves. By collecting writings from the ninenteenth century to today, Paul Mathews illuminates how orchestration has grown and developed, as well as presenting a wide variety of theories that have been embraced by the leading practitioners in the field. The collection then traces the history of orchestration, beginning with Beethoven’s Orchestra (with writings by Berlioz, Wagner, Gounod, Mahler, and others), the nineteenth century (Mahler, Gevaert, Strauss) the fin de siècle (on the edge of musical modernism; writings by Berlioz, Jadassohn, Delius, and Rimsky Korsakov), early modern (Busoni, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Grainger, and others), and high modern (Carter, Feldman, Reich, Brant). Many of these pieces have never been translated into English before; some only appeared in small journals or the popular press and have never appeared in a book; and none have ever been collected in one place. The study of orchestration is key for all students of music theory and composition. Orchestration provides a much needed resource for these students, filling a gap in the literature.

Computers in Music Education addresses the question of how computer technologies might best assist music education. For current and preservice music teachers and designed as a development tool, reference resource, and basic teaching text, it addresses pedagogical issues and the use of computers to aid production and presentation of students’ musical works. Written by a music educator and digital media specialist, it cuts through the jargon to present a concise, easy-to-digest overview of the field, covering: • notation software • MIDI sound creation • downloading music • posting personal MP3s for mass distribution. While there are many more technical books, few offer a comprehensive, understandable overview of the field. Computers in Music Education is an important text for the growing number of courses in this area. 2007: 246x174: 360pp Hb: 978-0-415-97850-7: £60.00 Pb: 978-0-415-97851-4: £21.99 • AVAILABLE AS AN INSPECTION COPY

VOICE/OPERA/MUSICAL THEATRE
Acting in Musical Theatre
The Making of the Sound of Music
Classic American Popular Song
A Comprehensive Course
Max Wilk
The Second Half-Century, 1950–2000
Joe Deer, Wright State University, USA and Rocco Dal Vera, University of Cincinnati, USA
The Sound of Music was the last – and most successful – collaboration of two giants of the musical theatre, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. This book tells the full story of the making of the show, from the first rough ideas through the tryouts, fine tuning, and eventual triumph – all from an eyewitness to the events themselves. Max Wilk brings a musical theatre historian’s eye to the work, along with his passionate involvement as a witness to this history. For anyone and everyone who has ever been thrilled by The Sound of Music, this book will be a must.
David Jenness and Donald Velsey
’Though I attended a highly respected drama department for six years (two degrees), there was never a single course offered having anything to do with musical theatre. Therefore, I am all the more impressed by Acting in Musical Theatre, which gives a comprehensive and thought-provoking guideline to the study of performing on the musical stage. I found it fascinating and functional, and I am sure you will, as well.’ – Tom Jones, Tony Award-Winning Author/Lyricist of The Fantasticks, 110 In the Shade and I Do, I Do! ‘At last a book that assists us in guiding our students to inhabit characters in musicals organically! A major milestone in musical theatre pedagogy.’ – Robert Barton, Author of Acting: Onstage and Off Acting in Musical Theatre is the only complete course in approaching a role in a musical. It is the first to combine acting, singing and dancing into a comprehensive guide, combining what have previously been treated as three separate disciplines. This book contains fundamental skills for novice actors, practical insights for professionals, and even tips to help veteran musical performers refine their craft. Drawing on decades of experience in both acting and teaching, the authors provide crucial advice on all elements of the profession, including: • fundamentals of acting applied to musical theatre • script, score and character analysis • personalizing your performance • turning rehearsal into performance • acting styles in the musical theatre • practical steps to a career. Acting in Musical Theatre’s chapters divide into easy-to-reference units, each containing related group and solo exercises, making it the definitive textbook for students and practitioners alike. 2008: 246x174: 480pp Hb: 978-0-415-77318-8: £60.00 Pb: 978-0-415-77319-5: £18.99 eBook: 978-0-203-93107-3 • AVAILABLE AS AN INSPECTION COPY $105.00

Along with telling the stories behind these songs, America’s Songs suggests, simply and succinctly, what makes a song great. The book illuminates the way each great song melds words and music – sentiment and melody – into a seamless whole. America’s Songs also traces the fascinating but mysterious process of collaboration, the give-andtake between two craftsmen, a composer and a lyricist, as they combined their talents to create a song.

America’s Songs tells the ‘stories behind’ the most beloved popular songs of the last century. We all have songs that have a special meaning in our lives; hearing them evokes a special time or place. Little wonder that these special songs have become enduring classics. Nothing brings the roaring 1920s to life like ‘Tea for Two’ or ‘I’m Just Wild About Harry’; the Great Depression is evoked in all of its pain and misery in songs like ‘Brother Can You Spare a Dime?; ‘God Bless America’ revives the powerful hope that American democracy promised to the world during the dark days of World War II; ‘Young at Heart’ evokes the postwar optimism of the 1950s. And then there are the countless songs of love, new romance, and heartbreak: ‘As Time Goes By,’ ‘Always,’ ‘Am I Blue’... the list is endless.
For anyone interested in the history of the songs that America loves, America’s Songs will make for fascinating reading.

Sounding Off: Theorizing Disability in Music Edited by Neil Lerner, City University of New York, USA and Joseph N. Straus, Davidson College, USA Sounding Off: Theorizing Disability in Music is the first book-length work to focus on the historical and theoretical issues of music as it relates to disability. It shows that music, like literature and the other arts, simultaneously reflects and constructs cultural attitudes toward disability.

2ND EDITION
Liveness Performance in a Mediatized Culture Philip Auslander, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture addresses what may be the single most important question facing all kinds of performance today. What is the status of live performance in a culture dominated by mass media? Since its first appearance, Philip Auslander’s ground-breaking book has helped to reconfigure a new area of study. Looking at specific instances of live performance such as theatre, rock music, sport, and courtroom testimony, Liveness offers penetrating insights into media culture, suggesting that media technology has encroached on live events to the point where many are hardly live at all. In this second edition, the author thoroughly updates his provocative argument to take into account new digital and media technologies, and cultural, social and legal developments. 2008: 216x138: 224pp Hb: 978-0-415-77352-2: £60.00 Pb: 978-0-415-77353-9: £19.99 eBook: 978-0-203-93813-3 • AVAILABLE AS AN INSPECTION COPY $120.00

Deleuze on Music, Painting and the Arts Ronald Bogue Series: Deleuze and the Arts
Silvia Rief, University of Innsbruck, Austria Series: Routledge Advances in Sociology This book explores contemporary club and dance cultures as a manifestation of aesthetic and prosthetic forms of life. Silvia Rief addresses the questions of how practices of clubbing help cultivate particular forms of reflexivity and modes of experience, and how these shape new devices for reconfiguring the boundaries around youth cultural and other social identities. She contributes empirical analyses of how such forms of experience are mediated by the particular structures of night-clubbing economies, the organizational regulation and the local organization of experience in club spaces, the media discourses and imageries, the technologies intervening into the sense system of the body (eg. music, visuals, drugs) and the academic discourses on dance culture. Jesus Dub Theology, Music and Social Change Robert Beckford, University of Birmingham, UK Robert Beckford explores the dialogue between two central institutions in African Caribbean life: the church and the dancehall. He highlights how Dub – one of the central features of dancehall culture – can be mobilized as a framework for re-evaluating theology, taking apart doctrine and reconstructing it under the influence of a guiding theme. 2006: 216x138: 192pp Hb: 978-0-415-31018-5: £70.00 Pb: 978-0-415-31019-2: £19.99 eBook: 978-0-203-41339-5 • AVAILABLE AS AN INSPECTION COPY $35.95

Sporting Sounds Relationships Between Sport and Music Edited by Anthony Bateman, Keele University, UK and John Bale, Aarhus University, Denmark Music and sport are both highly significant cultural forms, yet the substantial and longstanding connections between the two have largely been overlooked. Sporting Sounds addresses this oversight in an intriguing and innovative collection of essays.
Michael H. Thaut, Colorado State University, USA Series: Studies on New Music Research With the advent of modern cognitive neuroscience and new tools of studying the human brain ‘live,’ music as a highly complex, temporally ordered and rule-based sensory language quickly became a fascinating topic of study. The question of ‘how’ music moves us, stimulates our thoughts, feelings, and kinesthetic sense, and how it can reach the human experience in profound ways is now measured with the advent of modern cognitive neuroscience. The goal of Rhythm, Music, and the Brain is an attempt to bring the knowledge of the arts and the sciences and review our current state of study about the brain and music, specifically rhythm. The author provides a thorough examination of the current state of research, including the biomedical applications of neurological music therapy in sensorimotor speech and cognitive rehabilitation. This book will be of interest for the lay and professional reader in the sciences and arts as well as the professionals in the fields of neuroscientific research, medicine, and rehabilitation. 2007: 234x156: 272pp Hb: 978-0-415-97370-0: £75.00 Pb: 978-0-415-96475-3: £21.99

ROUTLEDGE MUSIC BIBLIOGRAPHIES
Routledge Music Bibliographies combine two series that were previously published under the Garland imprint, one focusing on individual composers (The Composer Resource Manuals) and one focusing on musical genres (The Reference and Information Guides). Each of the volumes is a selective, annotated bibliography of citations of writings about a composer, genre, topic or geographic region.
NEW
Bringing the series to an online environment answers the need for updated information to be reflected as new research is introduced. This online database of information will be a ‘live’ resource, fully searchable, and with active links. Users will have unlimited access, annual revisions will be made and a limited number of pages can be downloaded for printing. Complete print volumes will also be available at a discount for libraries requiring both print and online versions.
Timothy Flynn
Routledge Music Bibliographies constitutes a well-revered series, comprised of nearly fifty volumes devoted to individual composers (eg. Handel, Bernstein, Puccini) and twenty on the subject of a specific genre or instrument (eg. the Concerto, Sacred Music, the Violin). Each volume has a comprehensive listing of sources. Top scholars were contracted to collect the research in their fields. The individual volumes are available for sales to libraries via subscription, sold in clusters of five or more, and discounted accordingly.
