FORTHCOMING TEXTBOOK

Walking Away from Terrorism Accounts of Disengagement from Radical and Extremist Movements John Horgan, Pennsylvania State University, USA This book focuses on identifying the tipping points for disengagement from terrorism, and is informed by the detailed, illuminating and sometimes extraordinary accounts that the terrorists themselves offer about the reasons why they left terrorism behind. The book explores four major issues: • current knowledge on disengagement and de-radicalization • what terrorists themselves say about their experiences of disengagement, particularly how exit routes became expressed, why they wanted to leave and what happened to them once they found themselves as exterrorists • what lessons and implications can be learned from accounts of disengagement • what implications effective counter-terrorism initiatives have for policy, law enforcement, intelligence, civil society and other relevant parties. Walking Away from Terrorism provides a model of disengagement and de-radicalization; a detailed analysis of the implications of the model for informing responses, and a strategic, systematically presented, point-by-point and multi-level guide for policy makers for facilitating de-radicalization processes at a variety of political, social and legal levels. This book will be essential reading for all students of terrorism studies and highly recommended for students of international security, international relations and politics. Selected Contents: 1. movements. Economic and rational-choice theorists assume that human beings are motivated only by self-utility, yet terrorism is ultimately an altruistic act in the eyes of its participants. This book highlights the importance of the desire to belong to a group as a motivating factor, and argues that all of us face an eternal trade-off between selfishness and community concern. This hypothesis is explored through four key groups; the IRA in Northern Ireland, Al Qaeda, Hamas, and the Naxalites in India. Through this, the book analyzes the birth, growth, transformation and demise of violent political movements, and ends with an analysis of the conditions which determine the outcome of the war against terrorism. Understanding Terrorism and Political Violence will be essential reading for advanced students of terrorism studies and political science, and of great interest to students of social psychology and sociology. ’Jarret Brachman’s brilliant analysis of the ideology that inspires and sustains Al Qaeda and other violent jihadi movements will greatly enhance understanding of the threat they pose to peace and security . It is an invaluable aid for those engaged in combating the recruitment of future generations of jihadi suicide terrorists.’ Paul Wilkinson , Emeritus Professor of International Relations, University of St Andrews ’Global Jihadism is an important contribution to the literature on al Qaeda and Salafist jihadism specifically and terrorism in general... a timely and incisive analysis of the most pressing security challenge of our time.’ - Professor Bruce Hoffman, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University Global Jihadism exposes the core doctrine and strategy of today’s global Jihadist movement. The first half of the book explores the ideas upon which groups such as Al Qaeda are built, including the concepts of Jihad, al-Wala wal-Bara, Takfir and Tawhid. Jarret Brachman exposes a genre of Jihadist strategic scholarship that has been virtually ignored in the West and helps to situate it within the broader Salafist religious movement. The second half explores the thinking and activities of Al Qaeda’s propaganda machine, explaining its intricacies and idiosyncrasies. It includes case studies on the rise and fall of global Jihadist terrorism in Saudi Arabia post-9/11, and highlights the explosive results of bringing theory to bear on practice in the United Kingdom over the past twenty years. The book concludes by providing innovative strategies for combating the global Jihadist ideology.

War, Torture and Terrorism

Armed Groups and the Balance of Power

Rethinking the Rules of International Security Edited by Anthony F. Lang, Jr. and Amanda Russell Beattie, both at University of St Andrews, UK This book seeks to demonstrate how rules not only guide a variety of practices within international politics but also contribute to the chaos and tension on the part of agents in light of the structures they sustain. Four central themes- practice, legitimacy, regulation, and responsibility- reflect different dimensions of a rule governed political order. The volume does not provide a single new set of rules for governing an increasingly chaotic international system. Instead, it provides reflections upon the way in which rules can and cannot deal with practices of violence. While many assume that ’obeying the rules’ will bring more peaceful outcomes, the chapters in this volume demonstrate that this may occur in some cases, but more often than not the very nature of a rule governed order will create tensions and stresses that require a constant attention to underlying political dynamics. This wide-ranging volume will be of great interest to students of International Law, International Security and IR theory. Selected Contents: 1. Edited by Didier Bigo, Sciences Po, Paris, France and Anastassia Tsoukala, University of Paris XI, Orsay, France Series: Routledge Studies in Liberty and Security This edited volume questions the widespread resort to illiberal security practices by contemporary liberal regimes since 9/11, and argues that counter-terrorism is embedded into the very logic of the fields of politics and security. Rethinking Japanese Security Internal and External Dimensions Peter J. Katzenstein, Cornell University, USA Series: Security and Governance Peter J. Katzenstein’s essays explore the concept of ’Comprehensive Security’ which not only encompasses traditional military concerns but also domestic aspects of security. The book’s focus on counter-terrorism and national security highlights a policy approach which, over decades, Japan has developed with political patience and diplomatic finesse. These essays advocate an eclectic approach that helps in recognizing new questions and that seek to combine elements from different analytical perspectives in the exploration of novel lines of argument. Selected Contents: 1. Japanese Security in Perspective Peter J. Katzenstein 2. Japan, Asian-Pacific Security, and the Case for Analytical Eclecticism Peter J. Katzenstein and Nobuo Okawara (2001) Part 1: Japan’s Internal and External Security Policies 3. Japan’s Security Policy: Political, Economic and Military Dimensions Peter J. ’This anthology’s broad coverage of the relationship of risk to the war on terror’s proliferation of surveillance is extraordinary. The work of this excellent group of scholars is innovative and compelling.’ - Michael Shapiro, University of Hawaii, USA ’Risk and the War on Terror is filled with theoretically and empirically fascinating new contributions to our understanding of this crucially important topic.’ - Tony Porter, McMaster University, Canada This book offers the first comprehensive and critical investigation of the specific modes of risk calculation that are emerging in the so-called War on Terror. Risk and the War on Terror offers an interdisciplinary set of contributions which debate and analyze both the empirical manifestations of risk in the War on Terror and their theoretical implications. From border controls and biometrics to financial targeting and policing practice, the imperative to deploy public and private data in order to ‘connect the dots’ of terrorism risk raises important questions for social scientists and practitioners alike: • How are risk technologies redeployed from commercial, environmental and policing domains to the domain of the War on Terror? • How can the invocation of risk in the War on Terror be understood conceptually? • What are the implications of such moves for the populations that come to be designated as ‘risky’ or ‘at risk’? • Where are the gaps, ambiguities and potential resistances to these practices? In contrast with previous historical moments of risk measurement, governing by risk in the War on Terror has taken on a distinctive orientation to an uncertain future. This book will be of strong interest to students and researchers of international studies, political science, geography, legal studies, criminology and sociology.

Critical Studies on Terrorism

Editors: Richard Jackson - (Founding Editor) - Aberystwyth University, UK Marie Breen Smyth - Aberystwyth University, UK Jeroen Gunning - Aberystwyth University, UK Piers Robinson - The University of Manchester, UK George Kassimeris - University of Wolverhampton, UK

ISSN: 1753-9161 (electronic) 1753-9153 (paper) Volume 2, 2009, 3 issues per year

Critical Studies on Terrorism is a new international, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal starting in 2008. The journal seeks to publish quality research on all aspects of terrorism, counter-terrorism and state terror.

A key aim of the journal is to both create space for robust, innovative research on terrorism, and to encourage fruitful intellectual engagement between critical and orthodox accounts of terrorism. In particular, the editors are looking for empirical, theoretical and policy-oriented articles that recognise the inherently problematic nature of the terrorism label, employ a critical-normative perspective broadly defined, and challenge accepted orthodoxies. Research on terrorism employing methodological and disciplinary perspectives from outside the poltical science and international relations paradigms is especially encouraged.
