Useful hints when planning your road trip
There are certain things to keep in mind and check for yourself before hitting the road.
The most important thing is to check the safety of your vehicle.
Examine the following:
• roadworthiness • tyres • brakes • windscreen wipers • all lights and indicators • water and oil •
Always carry the following spares in your boot (these could save time and money in the event of a breakdown):
• fan belt • radiator hose • spare tyre • spare ignition key • wheel pump • jack • warning triangle • The second important thing is to make sure your property is taken care of. Note: Always inform your local security company and police station that you will be away from home for a certain period of time.
During our winter months we experience extremely bad weather conditions in certain areas, so please be vigilant, rest when needed, ensure the safety of your passengers and those of other road users and maintaining a two second following distance at all times. However, in foggy or rainy conditions and when driving at night, increase your following distance.
DON’T FORGET…
• your driver’s license (this is required by legislation) • important documentation you might need along the road • chronic medication
Buckle up and drive safe. And remember, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal in South Africa.
Don’t speed. Save lives, not time.
DON’T…
• leave pets alone • leave unnecessary appliances switched on • leave taps open • Do not use back roads even if they cut travelling distance. Busy roads allow for much easier assistance when in need.
DO…
• In case you have someone looking after your property while you are travelling, ensure that you have laid down the rules of the house and made notes of daily important tasks in and around the house. • When travelling an unfamiliar route, ensure that you have planned your journey properly. Pack a route map in case your
GPS doesn’t pick up signal in certain areas.
Route 67 – Mosaic Tour
Route 67 forms part the greater Nelson Mandela Bay 'Arts Journey', which includes a number of art galleries at different locations throughout the City. From The Donkin Reserve we explore some of the 67 pieces of art making up the entire Route 67. From the Donkin, the colourful 470m2 piazza mosaic celebrates the multi-cultural heritage, diverse histories and abundant fauna and flora that characterises the city and province. Look out for the life-size laser-cut steel figures from a symbolic voting line that evokes a memory of voters as they were seen in the country’s first democratic elections. Hear the sad, yet romantic story of Sir Rufane Donkin’s love and the pyramid that was erected for his late wife, Elizabeth, after whom Port Elizabeth was named.
