About Me Rovi Dean Lau I am currently a third year student studying at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Architecture. This portfolio is a collection of my architectural projects from 2012 – 2013 while undertaking the architecture course. In addition, I have selected a few of my personal works which showcase my artistic and creative passion. This portfolio documents my journey into the world of architecture. Through this journey, I have become more aware between the challenges between man and his environment to challenges for ideas for the future of the world. It gave me a different perspective on what is architecture and it allowed me to engage in further discourse. Learning does not stop here; to me, learning takes place every second. I aim to achieve a Masters degree in Architecture and hope to continue learning as I grow. The more we know, the better we become in shaping our environment and the world as Architects.

Gateway to Wyndham City Completed in November 2013
This project calls for a highway installation which creates an identity and sense of pride towards the people and the City of Wyndham, Victoria. In this studio, we explored ideas of architecture as a discourse as well as a parametric design through the use of Rhino 3D and Grasshopper plug-in. This was a group project of three members, and the final outcome of the design was done through Grasshopper. The design idea was to re-create the experience of Werribee River, a river with great significance to local Australians, including the aboriginal tribes. To achieve this, an enclosed space was created to allow visitors to experience the sense of serenity and solitude, two qualities that we believe represent the river.

Cultural Centre at Herring Island Completed in May 2013
This is an individual project to design a cultural centre that celebrates the history of the aboriginals and the development of the culture throughout the decades. The idea behind the design was ‘growth’ as it aims to represent what the aboriginals had gone through. In this studio, I explored the use of the landscape as part of the design as well as the building being part of the environment.

Art at Victoria State Library Completed in May 2012
This is an individual project with an intention to design a stage around a theme titled ‘Art’ at the forecourt of Victoria State Library. Using the river as an analogy, my agenda was to gather and connect people through stage performances.

Body Lantern Completed in May 2012
This is another individual project. The idea was to choose a natural process to influence the design of the lantern. I have chosen soundwaves as the natural process. This studio explored the use of 3D design software called Rhino3D with assistance of panelling tools plug-in to produce the outcome of the project.

San Francisco today is well known for its prestigious and well equipped fire stations in the United States and the world. This competition calls for a new fire station headquarters which serves not only to centralise operations but also serves as a token of appreciation from the city to the department.
