DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) DAB works by combining two digital technologies to produce an efficient and reliable radio broadcast system. Traditionally radio programmes were broadcast on different frequencies via FM and AM, and the radio had to be tuned into each frequency, as needed. DAB is a digital radio broadcasting system that combines multiple audio streams onto a relatively narrow band centred on a single broadcast frequency, creating a more efficient communication channel. The original objectives of converting to digital transmission were to enable higher fidelity, more stations, and more resistance to noise and interference than in analogue FM radio.

Benefits of DAB • Great reception and less susceptible to interference • Excellent sound quality • Wider selection of channels, particularly in rural areas • Automatic tuning • More channels available

AMPLIFIERS | INDUCTION LOOP SYSTEMS

INDUCTION LOOP SYSTEMS Induction loops

Induction loop signals

Induction loop amplifiers are a must for modern PA installations to give people with hearing disabilities equal access to information and announcements.

Hearing aids designed to receive induction loop signals generally have a switch marked ‘M’ for microphone and ‘T’ for telephone (sometimes a combined position is provided). In the ‘T’ position a pickup coil, originally designed for picking signals from a telephone earpiece, is used to receive audio from induction loop systems.

Adastra’s induction loop equipment is designed to complement the A series mixer amplifiers with their multiple input options; allowing these induction loop amplifiers to be used stand alone, with up to three sound sources - no need for a separate mixer or mixer amplifier. How it works Induction loop amplifiers allow audio signals to be transmitted using a magnetic field to a suitably equipped listener. A magnetic field is created when current flows though a wire. In induction loop systems the wire is normally installed as a loop around the perimeter of the area. A small coil within a hearing aid or other suitable receiver then picks up this magnetic field and converts it to audio at a suitable level for the listener. The loop itself is simply an insulated wire installed at a low level, around a skirting board for example.

HALL PA WITH INDUCTION LOOP

The ideal signal strength for an induction loop system is such that a person switching between ‘M’ and ‘T’ would not notice a difference between the sound of someone speaking normally and a signal transmitted from the loop. We also have available a simple inductive loop receiver that allows you to listen to the loop signal using an ordinary pair of headphones, which is ideal for installing and testing induction loop systems. It is important that the cable used to form the loop is capable of carrying the current that the amplifier produces. Typical applications: • Churches and places of worship • Conference rooms and theatres • Museums, galleries and exhibitions

APPLICATIONS | TECHNICAL DATA

Applications Adastra products cover environments and applications with a focus on clear and efficient sound coverage. Public Address Systems A public address system is a means of sound reinforcement for relating speech and audible information to a group of people. The setup may vary from a single portable amplifier in a small room to an intricate multi-room zoned system with multiple speaker arrays. Since each public address venue will have its own characteristics, there are many different speaker types and installation methods depending upon the architecture of the building, ambient noise levels and coverage requirements. The key demands from any public speaker are efficient speech delivery and wide area coverage. Typical venues include: schools/universities, medical centres, market halls, airports, train stations and places of worship.

Background Music Systems Generally, background music is a term used for pleasant and unobtrusive playback of recorded material. Many public buildings benefit from background music systems to help create an ambience or mood for their service users. These systems may be tailored to each building and its function in much the same way as with public address systems. The main difference is that full range audio quality is imperative with background music in order to make it listenable and inoffensive, which is not necessarily a key requirement for basic speech delivery. Applications include: bars, retail outlets, restaurants, galleries, museums and leisure centres.

Outdoor & weatherproof systems Some public address and background music components are designed for use in outdoor or damp environments. The materials used and construction methods help to make them weather resistant and able to withstand outdoor conditions. The main factors to be taken into account when planning outdoor or weatherproof systems are safety and durability of the electrical components to be used within the proposed environment. This includes any of the equipment exposed to the potentially damaging elements including speakers, transformers, cabling and connectors. Mixers and amplifiers are more often sited in an indoor environment. Typical environments include: patios, auction sites, arenas, theme parks, marinas and swimming pools.

TECHNICAL DATA | TYPES OF SYSTEM

55

Types of System Standard Low Impedance Speakers

Impedance is measured in Ohms (Ω). Higher impedance opposes the output of the amplifier more, causing it to deliver less power, whereas lower impedance allows the amplifier to deliver more power. Impedance visual representation: The speaker impedes any electrical current flowing through it, in the same way that the neck of an hourglass impedes the sand flow.

Since the coil is wound from very thin wire, there is a certain amount of resistance to the electricity passed through it. This, coupled with some other electrical characteristics, is known as impedance.

The amplifier needs this impedance to stop itself from over-working and burning itself out, and is an important consideration when matching amplifiers and speakers together in a system.

1

2

3

The narrow neck controls the flow of sand just as a speaker’s impedance controls the flow of current

2 narrow necks makes it half as difficult for the sand to pass through, just as 2 parallel speakers have half the impedance as 1, allowing twice as much power to flow through

If the neck is too wide it offers too little control, just as when the speaker impedance is too low and allows too much power to flow from the amp, resulting in eventual failure

For any given amplifier, the impedance of the speakers attached to it must not be below the rated output impedance of the amplifier and must be rated to handle the power that the amplifier will deliver at that impedance.

Basic low impedance set-up

100W @ 4Ω 70W @ 8Ω

For instance, a 2 x 100W amplifier may be rated down to a minimum of 4Ω on each side. However, if an 8Ω speaker is attached to each side, the amplifier may only deliver 2 x 70W. Therefore, 70W would be the minimum handling capacity for these speakers.

+ 8Ω _

(Please refer to the instruction manual of the amplifier being used to find the power output at 4Ω, 8Ω, etc)

For 2 speakers with 8Ω impedance, the overall impedance (or combined load) will be 4Ω, allowing the 100W amplifier to deliver its full output across this pair of speakers. The power will be shared, so each speaker will receive 50W (even though both are capable of handling up to 70W).

+ _ 8Ω 70W

Parallel low impedance set-up

100W @ 4Ω

+ 8Ω _ 4Ω combined load

When 2 speakers are connected together in parallel (that is “+” to “+” and “-” to “-”), the electricity from the amplifier can flow through 2 routes instead of one. Having twice the number of routes to flow through effectively, means that it is half as difficult for the electricity to get around the circuit. Therefore, the impedance (resistance to flow) is halved when 2 of the same type speaker are linked together in parallel.

Standard loudspeakers comprise of 3 main components: a cone, a magnet and a coil. Passing a current through the coil causes the attached cone to move forward or backward. The coil is fed the electrical signal from an amplifier, which provides enough electricity to move the cone quickly, causing it to vibrate and make sound.

TYPES OF SYSTEM | TECHNICAL DATA

56

Types of System 100V Line Speakers For many applications, it is necessary to drive many speakers with a single amplifier, giving greater coverage to multiple rooms or over a given area. Constant voltage systems (usually 100V line) employ a transformer in the amplifier to convert the output to high impedance and a corresponding transformer in each speaker to tap off the required power from the amplifier.

Theoretically, this allows a large number of speakers to be driven by one amplifier, so long as the overall power being tapped by the speakers is within the amplifier’s output capacity (usually 90% of the amplifier’s maximum rated output).

Standard 100V line set-up Total tapped power: 80W 20W

100W Amplifier

In addition, the transformers in each speaker may have tappings at different points along the primary coil, which effectively draw different Wattages from the amplifier. For example, a 10W speaker may also have settings for 5W or 2.5W.

20W

20W

20W

The speaker output may also be varied using remote volume controls, known as attenuators, but these should be considered to be at their maximum volume output when choosing an amplifier to drive the speakers.

If more speakers are required beyond 90% of the 100V amplifier’s maximum output, a slave amplifier may be employed to drive these.

The slave amplifier is simply linked from the line output of the main amplifier, to which another series of speakers are then linked to, in the same way the speaker are from the main amplifier.

Types of System Active Speakers Active speakers contain their own amplifier to drive the speaker, which will be matched by impedance and power handling. Some active models contain an amplifier that can also drive another passive speaker (satellite). The main advantage of this type of system is that there is no need for

separate amplifiers, which also means that the system can be expanded by simply adding more active speakers and cascading the signal from one to the next. However, each speaker also requires power from the mains, so this should be considered when planning an active speaker installation.

Dispersion Angles Calculating the spacing required in-between speakers using the dispersion angle The spacing between speakers should be the distance between the dispersion overlap at the listener’s height.

Calculating the spacing requires trigonometry (using Tangent) in the following equation.

(Speaker height – Listener height) x TAN (dispersion angle / 2) x 2 Example: (2.8 – 1.5) x TAN (45º) x 2 1.3 x 1 x 2 = 2.6m apart (speaker spacing)

IP RATINGS | GENERAL CONSIDERAIONS | TECHNICAL DATA

58

IP Ratings To help determine the suitability of a speaker or other product for use in certain environments, the IP code (Ingress Protection Rating) has been introduced as the international standard rating for a product’s protection against damage from foreign objects and water ingress.

The IP rating is made up of two numbers; the first relates to ingress of foreign objects, the second relates to water ingress.

Protection against foreign objects ingress 0

Not protected

1

Protection from non-deliberate ingress of solid objects greater than 50mmØ

2

Protection from non-deliberate ingress of solid objects greater than 12.5mmØ

3

Protection from non-deliberate ingress of solid objects greater than 2.5mmØ

4

Protection from non-deliberate ingress of solid objects greater than 1mmØ

5

Protection from ingress of an amount of dust that would compromise operation

6

Fully protected against ingress of dust Protection against water ingress

0

Not protected

1

Protection from water dripping vertically

2

Protection from water dripping vertically when tilted at 15º

3

Protection from sprayed water from up to 60º angle

4

Protection from splashed water from any direction

5

Protection from water projected from a 6.3mm nozzle in any direction

6

Protection from powerful water jet from a 12.5mm nozzle in any direction

7

Protection against immersion in 1m of water up to 30mins

8

Protection against complete, continuous submersion in water beyond 1m

General Installation Considerations 1. Do not run microphone cables near mains, data, telephone or 100V line cables 2. Do not run 100V line cables near data, telephone or other low voltage cables

7. Always use a balanced or floating low impedance microphone terminating into a balanced input on long microphone cable runs

12. Ensure correct AC voltage and adequate current rating at the mains supply for all amplifiers and rack components

8. Ensure that all loudspeakers are in-phase

13. Only use the mains leads supplied with equipment or of equal compliance and current capacity

3. Do not exceed 90% of the amplifiers output power when using 100V line (speech only)

9. Ensure that there are no short circuits on the loudspeaker line before connection to the amplifier

4. Do not exceed 70% of the amplifiers output power when using 100V line (high level background music)

10. For outdoor, humid or dusty enviroments, ensure that the speaker units used have an adequate IP rating for protection, and that all amplifiers and rack components are completely sheltered from ingress

5. Do not use re-entrant horn loudspeakers for background music unless the loudspeaker has been specifically designed for this purpose 6. Avoid jointing microphone cable. When this is unavoidable make sure a good screened connector is used (eg: XLR)

T 09-8375020

14. Fix all speaker components securely to walls and ceilings using appropriate fixings for the substrate, and employ safety wires wherever possible

11. Secure amplifiers and other rack components in an appropriate case or cablinet capable of supporting the weight and giving adequate cooling ventilation

Glossary of Terms 2-way speaker – A 2-way speaker has two drivers, a tweeter to handle high frequencies, and a woofer to handle mid to low frequencies. Background music – Music that is intended to provide an unobtrusive ambient atmosphere to a location. Crossover - A circuit that divides the frequency spectrum into two or more parts. A crossover acts as a filter, allowing certain frequencies to pass through to the speaker while blocking others, sending only high frequencies to the tweeter and only low frequencies to the woofer. Decibel (dB) - a unit used to measure the intensity of a sound or the power level of an electrical signal by comparing it with a given level on a logarithmic scale. Dispersion – The degree of which a speaker’s sound is spread over the listening area. Driver – Any individual device on a loudspeaker that contributes to the creation of sound, also referred to as woofer or tweeter. Dynamic range - the ratio between the largest and smallest possible values of sound. Frequency response – Measured in Hertz (Hz). The human ear responds to frequencies from 20Hz to 20kHz (approx). A speaker’s frequency response indicates how much of that range can be reproduced. Hertz (Hz) – A unit used to measure sound frequency. Impedance – The amount of resistance to the flow of current, measured in Ohms (Ω). In-ceiling/In-wall speakers – Speakers that have been specifically designed for installation in a ceiling or wall to mount flush. The cavity in the ceiling or wall acts as a cabinet, so the speakers can produce more bass compared to standalone speakers. Neodymium -
A material used in some speaker magnets. Neodymium magnets are smaller and more powerful than conventional speaker magnets.

Ohms (Ω) – The measurement of electrical resistance. Often used to show the impedance of a speaker coil. Outdoor speakers -
Speakers that are designed specifically for placement in outdoor environments. Many outdoor speakers are designed to project sound over a larger area and to provide a little more bass than typical indoor speakers. They are also built to be weather resistant. Power handling -
A measure of how much amplifier power, in watts, a speaker can take before it is damaged. RMS -
A term used to indicate the average level of power that a receiver or amplifier can sustain over a given period of time. Average power ratings provide a more realistic assessment of your amp’s performance than peak power since an amp can only sustain peak power for a short period of time. RMS stands for “root mean square,” which is one of the mathematical methods used to calculate an amp’s average power output. While it isn’t an accurate descriptor of the measurements themselves, it’s commonly used throughout the industry to denote the average power rating. Satellite speaker -
Small speakers generally used as surround speakers placed or mounted in various locations (hence the name “satellite”) around a room for a home theatre setup. Because they tend to have limited bass response, they’re often designed to be used with a matching subwoofer. Sensitivity -
Sensitivity ratings shows how effectively a speaker converts power (watts) into volume (decibels). The higher the rating, the louder your speakers will play with a given amount of amplifier power. Sensitivity is often measured by driving a speaker with 1W and measuring the loudness in decibels at 1m and described as SPL (sound pressure level).

Subwoofer -
A speaker specially designed to reproduce a range of very low frequencies only (the bass). The typical range for a subwoofer is about 20-200Hz. A “powered subwoofer” includes a built-in amplifier to drive the speaker. Tappings – 100V line speakers can have multiple power settings. For example: 20W, 10W, 5W, 2.5W Terminals – Spring clip terminals work best with bare wire connections with small-gauge speaker wire, or pin-type connectors. Binding post terminals are a sturdier, more versatile type of speaker jack, often found on higher-quality speakers and receivers, and on most amplifiers. They’re threaded, so you can tighten them down against the wire or connector for a tight connection. Transient -
A short-lived aspect of a signal, such as the attack and decay of musical tones. A speaker that can react quickly to rapid changes in the music is said to have good “transient response.” Tweeter -
A small, lightweight driver that reproduces the highest musical frequencies, like violins, cymbals, female vocals, etc. The typical range for a tweeter is everything above 2,000Hz approx. Voice coil -
The cylindrical coil of wire that moves in the magnetic field of a dynamic driver. The voice coil is bonded to the diaphragm, which actually produces the sound. Watt -
A unit of power. Equal to the power in a circuit in which a current of one ampere flows across a potential difference of one volt. Woofer -
A type of driver that features a cone-shaped diaphragm, commonly used for producing the mid and low frequency portions of the music signal.

Stereo system -
Made up of two speakers; one to play the left channel of sound and a second to play the right channel sound. Stereo speaker setups are the most common for music listening, since most music is mixed for stereo, as opposed to mono (single-channel) or multi-channel surround recordings.
