BLUE MARLIN
The largest of the billfish species, growing up to 14 feet and weighing up to a ton. The largest fish are usually female. Their life expectancy ranges from 18 to 25 years. The white marlin is vastly smaller than the blue marlin.
WAHOO SAILFISH
Sailfish
Sailfish are known as the fastest fish in the ocean. They can swim at speeds upward of 70 miles per hour! It has been theorized that their sails serve as a heating and cooling system for the fish.
Wahoo are part of the mackerel family. Their razor-sharp teeth and speed make them a target for fishermen. The largest wahoo caught off the North Carolina coast weighed 150 pounds.
TROLLING
Fishermen catch billfish and gamefish by trolling artificial and natural baits. Boats typically pull eight lines cruising at 4 to 8 knots.
DOLPHIN
Also called mahi-mahi, dolphin can be identified by their distinctive head shape. Females have a rounder head shape; males’ heads are boxier. Dolphins typically live from 3 to 5 years.
