Dupie’s day of mourning arrives

EXT. FLAMINGO PAN - DUSK Johan, Louise, Dupie, Motsetse stand on a hill overlooking Dupie’s red Beatle parked far away by the dam shore. LOUISE Any last words Dupie? MOTSETSE Jy moet iets se bra. They all stand and watch the beatle, waiting for Dupie to speak. DUPIE Wiet vir my ’n light? He takes out a cigarette and sticks in his mouth. The others do the same one after the other. Johan finds a flattened matchbox in his back pocket. He lights up his cigarette and passes the burning match to Louise. She lights up and passes it to Motsetse. He lights up and passes it to Dupie. Dupie inspects the burning match for a moment, then lights up and drops it on a wet patch of fuel on the ground. It sparks a fire that moves faster and faster down the hill towards the red Beatle. As the four of them stare at it, Johan steps forward and looks at a very emotional Dupie. JOHAN (sings) Op die sportveld en op skool, sal ons handhaf werk en bou, edel is ons skool se naam en vuur ons aan tot roem en faam... Louise and Motsetse join in. JOHAN,LOUISE & MOTSETSE (singing) ...seuns en dogters klein en groot, dra elkeen n boodskap voort. laat ons so ons lof betuig met harte wat vol vreugde juig... Tears flow from Dupie’s face as he smokes his cigarette and joins them.

EVERYONE ...kom laat ons saam bou aan ons vaderland met ons hoof en hart en land kom laat ons saambou altyd hoog hou. Goudveld skool ons bly getrou aan ons leuse... The Beatles burns fiercely and the anthem comes to and end. EVERONE Streef. Werk!... They stomp their feet. EVERYONE ...OORWIN! The Sun sets with their silhouette on the hill as they watch the Beatle burning. FADE OUT.
