INT. ROOM 22 - MORNING - MID WINTER

A Blackberry cellphone on the bookshelf goes wild. A hand smacks it to the floor and FRANCOIS RETIEF(22), a manorexic with a thick beard gets out of bed to find it. FRANCOIS(V.O) Ek is Francois Retief. Ek swat in Stellenbosch en nee ek's nie 'n flank of 'n stut of 'n binnesenter nie. He picks it up, puts out the alarm and climbs back in bed. 2

INT. KITCHEN - MORNING

A hand switches on a kettle. TOP SHOT: Francois places two mugs on the counter and fills it with coffee, but most of it spills. FRANCOIS(V.O) toe ek in Matriek was het my kuns onderwyser altyd gese. INT. CORRIDOR/LIVINGROOM - MORNING

TRACK WITH Francois walking towards the living room, coffee mugs in hand. FRANCOIS(V.O) Moet my nie verkeerd verstaan nie, Stellenbosch is cool en als, maar as jy my vrae is dit 'n bietjie te lekker, vir sommiges. (CONTINUED)

INT. BATHROOM - DAY A tap is turned and water BURSTS from it. A topless Francois pops into frame, all wet and still waking up. He squeezes the last bit of toothpaste onto his toothbrush and starts brushing his teeth. The morning SILENCE is broken with Hannes's CHEERY WHISTLE moving towards him. He appears in the mirror's reflection behind Francois, wearing a PANDA SUIT and holding a series of PARTY ITEMS. HANNES Ek is nog nie seker oor wat ek gaan aantrek vannand nie. het jy al iets gekry? Francois mumbles with his mouth full of toothpaste. HANNES (cont'd) So ek het dit ge-narrow down tot die volgende drie opsies. Nommer een. Trance Party Panda. Francois turns around and leans on the basin. Hannes strips out of the PANDA SUIT, puts a chain around his neck, flattens his hair and poses. HANNES (cont'd) Nommer twee. The main man Rian Gosling of... He puts a leather cowboy hat on his head and lifts a Bible in the air. HANNES (cont'd) ...nommer drie of Angus Buchan Mighty Men Conference 2009? Francois just stands there with the brush in his mouth and Hannes drops the act. HANNES (cont'd) Nee, dis almal lame. Hannes leaves with disappointment. Francois and turns back to the mirror and continues.

FRANCOIS(V.0) Ek groei al die hele vakansie aan die baard. Die laaste keer wat ek geskeer het was ek dink, net voor die paasnaweek. Francois drops out of frame, SPITS, pops back up and wipes himself with a hand towel. FRANCOIS (V.O.) Toe dit nog Somer was. 5

EXT. HUIS NERINA - DAWN - 5 MONTHS AGO

SPRINKLERS are wetting the massive lawn outside the dorm. CLOSE ON the face of Francois, with a 5' O Clock shadow and wearing his iconic STRAIGHT FACE shirt FRANCOIS Marriete, ek't opgefok. Francois waits a while, then a door on the top floor opens and MARRIETE(22), a sexy blonde in her steps out onto the balcony looking down at Francois. MARRIETE Wat soek jy hier Francois? (CONTINUED)

Marriete goes back inside and Francois takes his phone and calls her. She picks up and he starts pleading again, but we hear continuous YELLING AND CURSING. Francois lowers the phone, waiting for her to calm down and as he lifts it again, she cuts him off. The front door opens and TWIN GIRLS(18) triple towards him. This is LISA and MARISA, in cute PJ's. LISA Marriete het ons uit gestuur om vir jou te se dis verby tussen julle en jy maak jou naam gat hier buite.

Francois just stands there, not really listening to them. LISA (looks at his shirt) Wat's dit veronderstel om te wees.

Francois turns around and as he walks away, he gets sprinkler with water. He just stands there taking the hit. FRANCOIS(V.O) My kuns onderwyser was mal. EXT. THE SLIPWAY - NIGHT It's getting dark out and we follow Francois, in his iconic straight face T-shirt) walking through a narrow alleyway. He notices ALICE(19) crying on a distance bench. FRANCOIS Askuustog is jy orraait? ALICE English Please. FRANCOIS Wow okay. Do you want a tissue or something? ALICE Dude seriously, fuckoff I'm fine. Francois doesn't really care and as he walks off, Alice gets verbal diarrhea. ALICE (cont'd) It's just me ex. Stefan. He's such a tool. When I saw him tonight in Bohemia he just like passed me like I don't exist, then...he phones me and tells me "that there's someone else" and I heard he's taking her to that stupid dance and I mean who does that? Francois sits next to her, listening to her in a caring way. FRANCOIS Yeah that sounds uhm... that sounds pretty intense. We HEAR and off-screen yell from Hannes, pissing against the bookshop window at the end of the passage. HANNES Franna, daar's jy. Kom hier bra. Francois gets up and slowly backs away from Alice. FRANCOIS (pointy gesture) Okay well uhm, cool story I gotta.

Francois is alone drinking his wine, quite bored and we hear a female voice from the other end of the balcony. ABIGAIL(O.S) Why are you alone in the cold? Are you socially awkward? Francois looks up to see ABIGAIL(21, petite and mysterious). FRANCOIS Are you talking to me? ABIGAIL No I'm talking to that stupid Tshirt. FRANCOIS What... this shirt is cool It's straight face. FRANCOIS I'm so sorry I don't know why I just did that. She glares at him for a moment then jumps him and he lifts her in the air, her legs curling around him. Francois is a few meters away facing the Neelsie Square Statue. It's cold and no one is around. We hear crickets birds. Out of the blue we hear BRINK's voice. Francois looks across the plain and see's Brink and Marriete jogging on campus. WHIP PAN: He turns around and walks away, but it's too late. Francois.

MARRIETE(O.S)

Francois turns around facing Brink and Marriete. FRANCOIS Hey. (to Brink) Sup. MARRIETE Ek't jou so lanklaas gesien. Jy lyk so anders. it's evident that Francois is putting up some sort of mask. Wat regtig?

FRANCOIS

On the far side of the hallway we see Francois anxiously waiting at the front door. MCU: He turns his back to the door to recollect himself. FRANCOIS (to himself) Jy weet wat jy soek...jy weet wat jy soek... As he says that, the door opens and to his surprise, it's Lian, looking dapper as always. LIAN Met wie staan jy so en gesels hier voor my deur? Lian.
