ROWING NEW ZEALAND / ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Chairman and CEO Report 2015
GERRY DWYER, Chairman of the Board
We are very proud of the achievements of our athletes, coaches and support staff in 2015 both in the results they achieved and the way in which they competed. We are proud of the continued quality of racing at the Bankstream National Championships and the growth of the Aon Maadi Cup. 2015 was another very fine year for Rowing in NZ.
We are very proud of the achievements of our athletes, coaches and support staff in 2015 both in the results they achieved and the way in which they competed.
SIMON PETERSON, Chief Executive
Partners To Derek and Judy Jones, and the team at Bankstream without whom we would not have the secure foundation that we have today – thank you for your continued positive support. The BankStream National Championships again provided top class racing as our multiple world champions get pushed by the future champions. The future champions at the Aon Maadi Cup 15/16 will come from a field of well over 2000 athletes and with one million page views on RowIT, the previous year we are again expecting significant coverage of this — 01 —
wonderful festival – to Geoff Blampied and the Aon team thank you for your continued positive investment in this critical area of development. Mighty River Power have proactively engaged with the growth of our High Performance programme with the MRP video series (on the RNZ website/ facebook page) we are very grateful for their continued support. Gallagher’s, Alliance, BNZ and 2XU have again done us proud both locally and internationally in partnership with our programmes and High Performance success. High Performance Sport NZ have increased their investment in us as a result of continued success and confidence in the HP programme. We are delighted with their support, not only in cash terms but in the quality of support staff and back office support throughout the year. A new and welcomed investment is the fulltime Coach Development position beginning in 2016. The ongoing support provided by the Lion Foundation, the NZCT and Pub Charity have been critical in covering our day to day costs without the need to burden our membership with increasing fees. Financial Focus The financial details of the 2015 year are covered later in the annual report. We continue to be extremely grateful for the professional management of our finances by
Commercial Manager Rachelle Stoddart and the diligent governance provided through our very professional board Audit Finance Risk and Compliance Committee Chaired by Joanna Perry. 2015 was another year of growth both in athlete numbers and for the first time we exceeded a $10 million operating budget – the level of investment, foreign exchange transactions, tour bookings, athlete payments, managing cash flow and this year the building alterations have all required and will continue to require very thorough governance oversight and management diligence, to ensure appropriate compliance. We have continued with our philanthropic campaign to secure the necessary funding for our 14 boat Olympic vision. We have received outstanding support and leadership from David Richwhite and Peter Masfen who have provided the momentum for our campaign. We are very grateful for the additional support from Derek Jones and the Brian Perry Charitable Trust (BPCT) and delighted to welcome and acknowledge Sean Colgan and Campbell Meyers as new and generous supporters of our High Performance programme. We have some way to go to achieve our financial goals of securing our Tokyo 2020
Campaign funding while also reducing the costs to our Under23 and Junior representative athletes. Administration As CEO I am grateful for the dedicated staff at RNZ who commit way beyond the office hours. We acknowledge the ten years’ service of Kevin Strickland and the three positive years of Margaret Timms (nee Webster) contribution to our Marketing and Communications position as she managed the increased Marketing and Media attention post London, with a highlight being the new and improved Aon Oarsport. While we did not have the funding to replace these roles for the remainder of 2015 there are positive signs that we will be back to status quo for staffing in 2016. We acknowledge Glen Sinclair’s contribution to the board and in-particular to the positive University Rowing Council relationship. To all the volunteers who work extensive hours to kept the regattas, the clubs, the school programmes and the domestic scene so positive and enjoyable thank you for another wonderful year and we hope that you have enjoyed seeing your contribution bringing enjoyment and success to rowers of all ages. Acknowledgement In the 2014 annual report we acknowledged the loss of three life members and we again — 02 —
remember and acknowledge their passing during 2015 – Sir Don Rowlands, Sir Tay Wilson and Kerry Ashby were collectively and individually very significant contributors to our wonderful sport both in ‘their day’ and in helping to establish the good health of Rowing NZ as it is today – we thank them for their dedication, direction and selfless contribution. Looking ahead Rio is now only three months away and while our funding target is five medals (of any colour) we back all of our crews to succeed both as athletes and as people doing good things for NZ and as positive role models for our young rowers of tomorrow. The High Performance plan for Tokyo 2020 is already in draft form. It will have the final touches made post Rio and it will be presented to HPSNZ with an outlook to 2024. The board and staff must always be thinking and developing our programmes ahead of time … we are being chased. We look forward to the members support in ensuring all the elements of school, club, university, coaching, officials and RPC’s are aligned and in place – so that we can all continue to be proud of the achievements of our rowers and coaches - they are the reason we exist.
ROWING NEW ZEALAND / ANNUAL REPORT 2015
High Performance Report 2015 The aim of being the top rowing nation in the world was a key performance indicator for Rowing New Zealand and we reached our goal.
Alan Cotter, High Performance Director
2015 Selectors: Elite/Under 23 – Conrad Robertson (convenor), Barrie Mabbott, Calvin Ferguson, Noel Donaldson Junior –Luke van Velthooven, Janey Wackrow, Judith Hamilton North Island Under 18 – Ian Bright, Mark James, Craig Smith South Island Under 18 –Alex Meates, Kaye Surgenor and Peter O’Connor
In 2015 New Zealand was the second best rowing nation at the Elite World Championships, in Aiguebelette, France but won the World Cup’s points trophy for the second consecutive year. The athletes have been fully committed to the task of performing on and off the water and have achieved excellent results at all levels to ensure Rowing New Zealand high performance is sustainable. The coaches planned and pushed their athletes each and every day to better themselves, with the help of the HPSNZ staff providing the support required in many areas such as strength and conditioning, physiology, physio, massage, nutrition, medical, and psychology. Rowing New Zealand had a goal of qualifying 14 boats for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and at the 2015 World Championships we achieved nine boats. The goal of 14 boats remains and the remaining boats have been selected to contest final qualifying regatta in May 2016. There have been a number of notable success stories in 2015, including a small selection below: • Both the Women’s and Men’s Eights qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics Games. This is the first time that this has been achieved in the 129 year history of Rowing New Zealand. — 03 —
• The men’s pair continuing their domination of their event and increasing their winning streak to 61 consecutive wins • Nine world championship medals at the Elite level • Four Under 23 medals • Under 23 LW2x World Best Time by Zoe McBride and Jackie Kiddle • Elite LW1x World Best Time by Zoe McBride • N ineteen New Zealand rowers stood on the podium at the 2015 World Championships
Performing on and off the water Rowing New Zealand is most grateful to receive increased support from HPSNZ through to the Rio Olympic Games. HPSNZ has shown confidence in our successful programme by lifting investment from $4.8 million in 2014 to $5.115 million in 2015 and $5.2 million in 2016. This funding will certainly cover a majority of the costs of the high performance programme in 2016. HPSNZ have also provided further investment in the form of Performance Enhancement Grants

2 (PEGs), Prime Minister’s Scholarships, HPSNZ Athlete Performance Support, and innovation and technology. Rowing New Zealand High Performance has also had great support from the Rowing New Zealand Board and Simon Peterson, with the philanthropic initiative. Without this extra funding there would be no Eights programme or a sustainable programme through to 2020 and beyond. With such strong high performance commitment over the last four years from the junior level through to our elite team, we are now set to create a strong platform for the next two Olympic cycles. We look forward to lifting our Performance to another level in the hope of being the leading rowing nation in the world every year. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the support I have had from all of our athletes, coaches, management and HPSNZ support staff who have been a part of the incredible success story so far.

ROWING NEW ZEALAND / ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Domestic Report 2015 A strong professional body of officials are needed if we are to continue to deliver high standard regattas for our members.
O Bob Evans Domestic Committee Chairman
ver the past year it became clear that recruitment, particularly of race officials, should be a major focus. A strong professional body of officials are needed if we are to continue to deliver high standard regattas for our members. The drive for new race officials began in 2015 when Sonya was joined by Lesley Milne in delivering the Introduction to Officiating Seminars across the country. It was wonderful to have 40 attend the introductory courses held in Wanganui, Invercargill, Cromwell and Twizel. We look forward to having more licenced race officials graduating from this group in the coming years. Regional and Major Course trainers were designated and plans are being prepared to engage more people through the module system. The area of revision for our current officials is also being worked through so that we can share and maintain standards, particularly as the rules change. The exchange with Australia was again held and we had four officials attend FISA events around the world. These opportunities are invaluable and we will continue to develop these as the recognised pathway for top officials. We were delighted to have over 160 coxswains attend three sessions with Elite and RPC coxswains held at major regattas. The sessions were designed to educate and upskill coxswains in the fundamentals of their role and also specific skills in racing.. Caleb Shepherd, Francie Turner, — 23 —
Sam Bosworth and Natalie Bocock did an outstanding job passing on all their wisdom to coxswains from novice to U18 grades. The new database was operational this year and this system simplifies the process for clubs, but its accuracy still relies on clubs filling in all, and accurate, information about their members. This database will help clubs better understand their membership structure, from competitive rowers, recreational amateurs or administration stars. This database is also designed to allow Rowing New Zealand to better communicate with those interested rowers of all levels. This direct contact with school leavers has shown an increase of awareness of club and university rowing
We look forward to having more licenced race officials graduating from this group in the coming years.
and also improved rowing continuation. The Whole of Sport Forum gathered all the regions leaders together and again proved invaluable. Rowing New Zealand asked “what should we do?”, the answers were varied but helped us to understand the
real issues that our sport faces. Discussions on the new water safety code review were also held at this forum, which provided clear feedback on interpretations and practicalities. This new water safety code has since been presented to Maritime NZ. After such positive responses from coaches regarding the conference and scholarship opportunities provided in 2014 it was important to Rowing New Zealand to continue this support for our club coaches. In 2015 Sport New Zealand hosted a nationwide Coaches Conference and this offered a unique opportunity for 13 rowing coaches to network and learn from elite coaches and other sporting codes. This year we said goodbye to Kevin Strickland and I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the dedication and passion he displayed while filling the Domestic Manager role for ten years. His
commitment to the domestic side of rowing was unswerving and I am sure his passion has inspired many across the country. 2015 Bankstream New Zealand Rowing Championships Near perfect conditions were experienced at Lake Ruataniwha with the regatta running to schedule right up until Saturday when a strong nor-west wind blew. The windy conditions forced the last nine finals to be raced in spectacular twilight conditions. The presentation of those medals and the major trophies was then held in front of a large crowd who had returned to the lake in the fading light after a six hour break - a quite spectacular finale. The 2015 programme saw new events added including the men’s and women’s club pair which had strong entries. Some great racing was experienced by these — 24 —
crews and it was great to see the club level enhanced in this respect. 2015 Bankstream New Zealand Masters Championships LLake Ruataniwha hosted an influx of 318 athletes from 32 clubs across the country. Cold conditions on the first day saw crews wrap up and enjoy the chance to warm up in the scheduled breaks the new programme listed. The new programme is in a block format and this allowed each grade to have racing in each block. Sunday saw the sun shine and the warmer conditions were appreciated. North and South battles in eights and quads were scheduled and again these proved to be popular crews to be selected into. It is great that masters rowing is in such good heart as we now have the World Masters Games confirmed for 2017 at Lake Karapiro.

ROWING NEW ZEALAND / ANNUAL REPORT 2015
University Rowing Report 2015 A continued push in the promotion of University Rowing was the key focus of 2015.
A Tim Wilson University Rowing President (outgoing)
continued push in the promotion of University Rowing was the key focus of 2015. This included the provision of marketing materials to University Clubs and direct contact to school leavers about University Rowing. Information about club rowing was also sent on to University novices, this saw 15 of the 90 novices that competed in novice events at the 2015 Aon New Zealand University Rowing Championships in Wanganui continue on to a club season (up from only 3 novices the previous year). The 2015 Aon NZ University Championships also saw a 10% increase in the numbers compared to 2014. On the High Performance side a more centralised approach was taken with the World Universiade team. For the first time the entire World Universiade squad was based at Karapiro with a dedicated coach for all four athletes. The squad of a men’s and women’s heavy and lightweight single scullers competed at the World Universiade in Chungju, South Korea. The small team competed well during the regatta culminating with a silver in the men’s lightweight single, fifth in the women’s lightweight single and men’s heavyweight single, and tenth in the women’s heavyweight single. The annual University Trans-Tasman event was held in Brisbane, Australia, it was great to have this held again after it was cancelled — 33 —
in 2014. While New Zealand retained the trophy it was again disappointing that that calibre of the Australian lightweight crews were not of a suitable standard for international competition. The future of the lightweight aspect of this competition is being reviewed and alternative options are being considered.
The 2015 Aon NZ University Championships also saw a 10% increase in the numbers compared to 2014.
The 2015 Tertiary Championships were held at Lake Ruataniwha in conjunction with the Bankstream New Zealand Masters Championships. The event was supported by the South Island Universities and also for the first time a University from the opposite island attended this event, with Victoria University making the trip down south. University rowing is the growth area of our sport and Rowing NZ will continue to support these rowers and clubs over the coming years and university rowing begins to really cement itself within the domestic and high performance calendar.

ROWING NEW ZEALAND / ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Secondary Schools Report 2015 School rowing in New Zealand continues to be in great heart, with school age rowers accounting for around 80% of all Rowing NZ licensed rowers.
S Gillian Simpson Schools Committee Chairperson
chool rowing in New Zealand continues to be in great heart, with school age rowers accounting for around 80% of all Rowing NZ licensed rowers. Each year the pinnacle event of the season the Aon New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Championships – the Aon Maadi Cup Regatta allows for schools to compete for top honours. We must acknowledge and give thanks to the event’s sponsor Aon for their ongoing support. In 2015 the Aon Maadi Cup regatta was hosted by Karapiro Rowing on Lake Karapiro and proved another great success with 2155 rowers from 120 schools. The Aon North Island Secondary School Championships saw large numbers in attendance as well and the regatta limits were stringent in order to be able to host this regatta without encroaching on more school time. The Meridian South Island Secondary School Championships were held successfully also and rather than extend out the days of this regatta South Island Rowing has proposed a 10 lane solution. The Committee is working through the process with South Island Rowing in order to enable this to be properly tested and handled for future regattas. It is heartening to see the increased interest in rowing shown by increasing numbers of School Principals attending the
— 37 —
regattas. All these people support rowing in their schools because they recognise the value of this sport in developing young men and women with essential skills for life.
On behalf of the Schools Committee our thanks go to the regatta officials, coaches, managers, schools, clubs and the countless volunteers and family supporters for making this a fantastic year for our young rowers. Transition and retention of our young rowers remains a strong focus and the work of promoting the university and club avenues for our school leavers has been a focus for our manager. The trickle on effect is a slow process but with more action and support of the other sectors of rowing should see more school rowers participating in our sport well after school. As NZSSRA and Rowing New Zealand work in greater synergy with each other it is our rowers who benefit and we believe the work towards fuller integration has been
well justified and has proven successful. It is therefore now appropriate for this process to continue and the final steps to be achieved in the next two years. 2015 saw great role models shine from our elite team, particularly with the close contact that was provided by the team at the Aon Maadi Cup. These role models are paramount to the ongoing success of sporting codes as we develop young people in this country to be not only top sports men and women but also good citizens of the future. Coaches, managers, teachers,
officials and senior rowers also share in the role in modeling respectful behavior, discipline and hard work to our young rowers. The Schools Committee supports any work in clubs and schools that emphasises the importance of good citizenship and pride in representing any organisation. The area of lightweight rowing continued to be debated by the Schools Committee this year and research into the trends over the last 5 years supported the committee’s position that lightweight rowing at the junior level is not recommended. The endorsement — 38 —
by the New Zealand Secondary Sports Council for the removal was a significant step towards its complete removal. With 2015 behind us we now have many things to celebrate, but we also reflect and assess where lessons have been learnt, all of this ensures we can move forward for the betterment of school rowing. On behalf of the Schools Committee our thanks go to the regatta officials, coaches, managers, schools, clubs and the countless volunteers and family supporters for making this a fantastic year for our young rowers.

ROWING NEW ZEALAND / ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Notes to the accounts FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2015
1 Statement of Accounting Policies Reporting Entity New Zealand Rowing Association Incorporated (trading as Rowing New Zealand) is an incorporated society under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908. The financial statements of Rowing New Zealand have been prepared in accordance with New Zealand Generally Accepted Accounting Practice including Financial Reporting Standards and Statements of Standard Accounting Practice. Changes to Accounting Standards A new Accounting Standards Framework has been issued by the External Reporting Board effective for reporting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2015. The current framework under which Rowing New Zealand reports will no longer be considered a part of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice in New Zealand (NZ GAAP) after this date. As Rowing New Zealand wishes to prepare accounts that comply with NZ GAAP and has expenses greater than $2 million annually, it has elected to adopt Tier 2 Not for Profit, Public Benefit Entity Standards for the year ending 31 December 2016. These standards are derived from the International Public Sector Accounting Standards as appropriate for not-for-profit public benefit entities with Reduced Disclosure Concessions. Management has not yet determined the impact on the preparation of and disclosures included in the financial statements. This will be applicable for the financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2016. Measurement Base The measurement base adopted is that of historical cost. Basis of Preparation The financial statements for Rowing New Zealand have been prepared using the going concern assumption. The Directors are satisfied that, to the best of their knowledge and belief, Rowing New Zealand has, or will have, adequate resources to continue operations at their current level for the foreseeable future.
In determining that the going concern assumption was appropriate the Directors considered:
• Forecast information relating to operational profitability and cash flow requirements;
• Rowing New Zealand’s reliance on external funding (through Sport New Zealand, corporate sponsorship and gaming trust donations in particular). Rowing New Zealand has contracts and/or significant commitments from various organisations for a significant portion of such required funding; however not for all such required funding. This is normal for such an organisation as Rowing New Zealand. Should funding not be forthcoming at forecast levels, then Rowing New Zealand would be able to reduce operating expenditure accordingly; and
• Repayment terms for the loans from Sport New Zealand and NZ Rowing Foundation. Annual repayments of the Sport New Zealand loan are required. Based on the 2015 cashflow, no repayments will be made in 2016. The amount of subsequent repayments is expected to be determined relative to the cash Rowing New Zealand has available. Although the NZ Rowing Foundation Loan is repayable on demand, the Foundation has confirmed that it will not seek repayment within the next 12 months.
Changes in Accounting Policies There have been no changes in accounting policies. All policies have been applied on bases consistent with those used in previous years.

ROWING NEW ZEALAND / ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Notes to the accounts FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2015
Specific Accounting Policies The following specific accounting policies which materially affect the measurement of financial performance and financial position have been applied. a) Accounts Receivables Accounts receivables are stated at their estimated net realisable value. b) Clothing and Inventory Clothing consists of items that are distributed to team members or staff, or sold. All items are valued at cost and are expensed when they are sold. Inventory consists of items such as boat lights and personal flotation devices which are held for sale. Inventories are valued at the lower of cost and net-realisable value. Cost is determined on a first-in, first out basis. Net realisable value represents the estimated selling price. c) Trade Creditors Trade creditors and accruals are stated at the estimated amounts payable. d) Property, Plant & Equipment Items of property, plant and equipment are initially recognised at cost and depreciated as outlined below. Initial cost includes the purchase consideration, or fair value in the case of a donated asset and those costs directly attributable to bringing the asset to the location and condition necessary for its intended use. These costs include, where appropriate, site preparation costs and installation costs. Costs cease to be capitalised when substantially all the activities necessary to bring an asset to the location and condition for its intended use are complete. Interest is not included in the cost of property, plant and equipment. Subsequent expenditure relating to an item of property, plant and equipment is added to its gross carrying amount when such expenditure either increases the future economic benefits beyond its existing service potential, or is necessarily incurred to enable future economic benefits to be obtained, and if that expenditure would have been included in the initial costs of the item had it been incurred at that time. Items of property, plant and equipment are written down immediately if an impairment to the value of the asset causes its recoverable amount to fall below its carrying amount. The impairment is recognised in the Statement of Financial Performance. When an item of property, plant or equipment is disposed of, the gain or loss recognised in the Statement of Financial Performance is calculated as the difference between the net sale price and the carrying amount of the asset. e) Depreciation Depreciation is provided on a straight line basis. The depreciation rates of the major classes of assets reflecting their estimated economic life are as follows:
Boats and Oars Coaching and Gym Equipment Leasehold Improvements Vehicles Computers and Furniture High Performance Centre Building
20% - 33% 10% - 40% 5% - 20% 5% - 10% 10% - 33% 3%

Notes to the accounts FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2015
f) Intangible Assets Intangible assets, which have finite useful lives, are measured at cost less accumulated amortisation and accumulated impairment losses. Costs for websites and member management systems are capitalised if the criteria for capitalising development costs are met. g) Amortisation Amortisation is recognised in profit or loss on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful lives of intangible assets from the date that they are available for use. The estimated useful lives for the current period are as follows: Website and Member Management System
5 years
h) Taxation Until 9 October 2015, Rowing New Zealand was a registered charity and as a result was exempt from income tax. Rowing New Zealand was removed from the Charities Register effective 9 October 2015. Rowing New Zealand now has an exemption from income tax under section 46 of the Income Tax Act 2007 as a body promoting amateur games or sports. As such no income tax is payable. i) GST Rowing New Zealand is registered for GST and the accounts have been prepared on a GST exclusive basis with the exception of accounts receivable and accounts payable which are inclusive of GST. j) Grants, Donations and Sponsorship Rowing New Zealand receives grants, donations and sponsorship from various sources, to assist with various endeavours. Grants, donations and sponsorship are recognised as revenue when any obligations attached to them have been met (for example when expenditure for which the grant, donation or sponsorship was provided has been undertaken). Until any such obligations have been met any grants, donations or sponsorship received in cash are shown as grants with remaining obligations in current liabilities. If there are no such obligations attached to the grants, donations or sponsorship they are recognised as revenue immediately when they are granted. Sponsorship revenue (in kind) where the sponsorship has been provided in kind, is recognised at the estimated sponsorship value. Where no reliable estimate can be made, no revenue is recognised. Recognition of sponsorship revenue has occurred with a matching expense being recorded. k) Operating leases Leases where the lessor effectively retains substantially all the risk and benefits of ownership of the leased items are classified as operating leases. Payments made under the leases are charged as expenses in the period in which they occurred. l) Statement of Cash Flows The Statement of Cash Flows is prepared exclusive of GST, which is consistent with the method used in the Statement of Financial Performance. Definitions of Terms used in the Statement of Cash Flows: “Cash” includes coins and notes, demand deposits and other highly liquid investments readily convertible into cash and includes at call borrowings such as bank overdrafts, used by the organisation as part of their day-to-day cash management. Cash also includes term deposits where the term deposit can be broken without incurring any penalties. “Investing Activities” are those activities relating to the purchase and sale of current and non current investments and any other non current assets such as Property, Plant and Equipment and deposits into liquidity funds. — 56 —
ROWING NEW ZEALAND / ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Notes to the accounts FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2015
“Financing Activities” are those activities relating to changes in members funds and the debt structure of Rowing New Zealand. “Operating Activities” include all transactions and other events that are not investing or financing activities. m) Foreign Currency Transactions Forward exchange contracts are taken out in relation to certain transactions. These transactions are measured and recorded using the exchange rates per the applicable forward exchange contract. If no forward exchange contract is in place, transactions denominated in foreign currencies are translated using the exchange rate in effect at the transaction date. Monetary items receivable or payable in a foreign currency, other than those resulting from transactions covered by forward exchange contracts, are translated at balance date at the closing rate. Exchange differences on foreign currency balances are recognised in the Statement of Financial Performance. n) Differential Reporting Rowing New Zealand qualifies for differential reporting as it is not publicly accountable (for accounting purposes) and by virtue of its size. Rowing New Zealand has taken advantage of all differential reporting exemptions, except that it chooses to present a Statement of Cash Flows and it translates foreign currency transactions at the spot rate in effect at the transaction date, rather than at the settlement rate. 2 Contingent Liabilities There are no contingent liabilities. (2014: nil). 3 Nature of Business The principal aim of Rowing New Zealand is to provide leadership that enhances performance and participation in rowing. 4 Revenue by Business Unit Year to 31 December 2015

The Philanthropic Funding Account was opened during the year for the purpose of receiving donations from philanthropists. Donated funds are used in accordance with the wishes of the donor. These funds are held in the Philanthropic Funding Account until required. Board approval is required to allocate funds from this account. There is no obligation to repay the funds and there is no liability recognised within Grants with Future Obligations. 8 Liquidity Account During 2013 the Board approved a Liquidity Policy. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that RNZ has ready access to liquid assets to sustain operations in the event of significant unanticipated increases in operating expenses or decreases in revenue to enable the organisation to preserve its capacity to deliver the domestic rowing programme and support the high performance programme. In November 2014 the balance of this account was increased to $315,000. No changes have been made to the balance of this account during 2015. Funds can only be transferred out of this account in particular circumstances and with Board approval. — 58 —

17 Financial Instruments a) Credit Risk Rowing New Zealand is exposed to credit risk on its current assets (bank accounts, call accounts, term deposits and operating receivables (refer note 11) and on its foreign exchange contracts (refer note 18). The only concentration of credit risk is with BNZ as all bank accounts (including liquidity account), call accounts, term deposits and foreign exchange contracts are held with BNZ. 17 Foreign Currency Risk Foreign currency risk is the risk that the value of a transaction, asset or liability fluctuates as a result of a movement in exchange rates. Rowing New Zealand is subject to foreign currency risk in a number of ways: ➢ • ➢ Purchase of equipment (boats and oars) from Europe ➢ • ➢ Attendance at overseas regattas (travel and accommodation expenses) Where exposures are certain, such as capital commitments and confirmed tour bookings, it is Rowing New Zealand’s policy to reduce the uncertainty around exchange rates using forward exchange contracts and foreign currency bank accounts. At 31 December 2015: ➢ • ➢ funds were held in foreign currency accounts (refer note 7). These funds will be used to pay expenses during 2016. ➢ • ➢ commitments on forward exchange contracts totalled $1,046,965 (2014: $1,147,166). These contracts commit Rowing New Zealand to purchase Euro, Swiss francs, US dollars and Australian dollars on particular dates at agreed exchange rates. The foreign currency purchased under these agreements will be used to pay costs, such as accommodation, for international tours.

Social Media 2015
R
owing New Zealand continues to grow across all its social media channels: Rowing New Zealand, the New Zealand Rowing Team and the Aon Maadi Cup. Rowing New Zealand has been in the social media space since 2012, and it has proved to be an excellent form of communicating with fans and the rowing community alike. This space is becoming increasingly important as a way of engaging with many different stakeholders. The New Zealand Rowing Team page continues to be the most well supported page with well over 10,000 fans and is growing steadily while followers on the Rowing New Zealand Facebook page recently surpassed 5,000. Rowing New Zealand now has close to 4,000 followers on Twitter while Instagram
has become increasingly popular. The Aon Maadi Cup Facebook page has also seen high levels of reach and engagement, with over 5,000 fans, and a reach of over 225,000 during the Aon Maadi Cup regatta in 2015. An Aon Maadi Cup Instagram account, set up to enable the event competitions, has also proved an effective tool to engage a younger audience, with over 1,000 followers and continued growth. A highlight on social media in 2015 was the ‘Inside Rowing’ campaign launched in conjunction with Mighty River Power. These videos were shared across social media platforms and proved highly engaging and popular, in particular, with New Zealand Rowing Team fans and supporters – bolstering the number of page followers significantly.
The growing number of followers on the social platforms has enabled Rowing New Zealand to accurately and efficiently maximize the use of social media as a tool for marketing, advertising, promoting, informing and driving traffic to the website.
