Rowland's Greek Housing Portfolio

We are keenly aware of current challenges affecting final design solutions, especially as they relate to member retention and recruitment, member accommodations, the “evaporation of cold air dorms, resiliency of construction materials, acoustical issues separating active and quiet zones, technology integration and security concerns. Our approach focuses on inspiring social interaction among undergraduates in the way interior spaces are zoned and reinforcing member bonding by observing and defining how people move throughout the house. At its finest, Greek housing facilitates the celebration of stories, successes, traditions and values -- experiences that make Greek life come alive.

Renovating the Sigma Kappa house involved the complete re-envisioning of a three-story 7,000 square foot sorority house adjacent to the University of Louisville campus. Rowland Design teamed with a local architectural firm to give the women of Sigma Kappa an open floor plan, and then filled each room with comfortable seating arranged in intimate groups. Inspired by the sorority’s colors of maroon and lavender, the inviting rooms of the Sigma Kappa house helped the sorority recruit one of the largest new member classes in the history of the chapter.

On Butler University’s campus since 1925, Alpha Chi Omega’s chapter house required renovation of its primary public spaces to assist in the recruitment of new members. The dining room, living room, television lounge and entry foyer were brightened using the light tones of celadon and pale rose that echo Alpha Chi’s colors of scarlet and olive green. New furnishings, fabrics and lighting were also introduced to support the durability and multifunctional needs of the sorority house.

The women of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Purdue University asked Rowland to design a house that felt inviting and also showcased the unique character of their chapter. Rowland Design utilized the exposed beams in the ceilings of the main living spaces to draw the eye from floor to ceiling. The sorority’s badge, coat of arms and flower inspire the artwork around the room. Using the sorority’s colors of light and dark blue as accents, Rowland Design painted the walls of the more formal sitting room a luscious gold. In an adjoining common space, cornflower blue became the wall color and warmly hued fabrics covered the plush furniture.

Warm, colorful walls and rich, vibrant patterns give Kappa Kappa Gamma’s reception area a formal look, showcasing the sorority’s elegant yet comfortable furniture. Full length sofas and plush pillows adorn the study lounge adjacent to the formal living room. A heavily paneled library space was transformed into a sophisticated sitting area, giving the room a storytelling quality that proudly displays the sisters’ history and achievements.

Seeking to establish a new look on a limited budget, the Delta Gamma house focused on upgrading their semi-formal living spaces for a more dramatic effect. Black walls, white molding and heightened detailing provide a strong contrast to the sorority’s existing furniture, giving the space a revitalized look. A molded archway offers separation between the entrance and common area, while inviting visitors to move freely from one space to another.

Sigma Chi at Purdue University dedicates itself to building leaders. So, when the fraternity house was in need of improvements, the house corporation board and advisors decided to renovate the entire house, making spaces that promote leadership the focus of the new design. Our design team created rooms for small group meetings, individual study, and an audio/visual center for giving presentations. Rowland Design, as the interior designer on the project, provided the fraternity with durable furniture and finishes that will withstand day to day fraternity life. Restrooms, bedrooms, and all common areas were redesigned to better accommodate today’s college student. The renovation has given the men of Sigma Chi a place they are proud to call their campus home.

The Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Wabash College created a new standard for fraternal living on campus. Although the initial structure was extremely inflexible, Rowland Design manipulated the existing spaces to create a more open and accessible residence. A walk-out basement, a suite design room concept, and a distinctive chapter room were designed with masculinity in mind, and accommodate the wear and tear that accompanies fraternal living. With its new ground plan, furniture and architectural finishes, the Beta Theta Pi house assuredly raised the bar for collegiate residential design.

The interior decor of this charming Spanish-mission revival home exudes comfort and drama. Upon entry into the living room, the eye is attracted upward with the wooden truss system that supports the vaulted ceiling. The room, like most of the home, is furnished in European and American antiques and custom furniture designed by Bob Frist. Two round windows added to the dining room help frame the custom fireplace as the signature wall in a room clad in 18 x 24 blocks of faux limestone. The dining room also has a cozy seating area ideal for after-dinner conversation. In the master bedroom, the color palette shifts to reef blue to provide a soothing environment in which to retreat.
