Freedom on Trial The First Post-Civil War Battle Over Civil Rights and Voter Suppression By Scott Farris
January 2021 392 pages Hardback 9781493046355 £21.95 / $27.95

US HISTORY
For President Ulysses S. Grant and blacks in the South following the Civil War, the conflict did not end with the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox in April 1865, but continued with the Ku Klux Klan’s terror campaign against blacks during Reconstruction. Grant not only authorized the U.S. Army to put down these insurrections through the use of force, but also sought to have the perpetrators of Klan violence vigorously prosecuted. In what would be a test of the boundaries of the recently enacted fourteenth and fifteenth amendments to the Constitution, the prosecution, led by Amos T. Ackerman, specifically sought to accurately catalogue the atrocities committed by this Army in disguise. Although only sixty-five Klansmen were ultimately found guilty and punished, many of their followers informed on them and promptly fled to the West to escape reprisals or prosecution themselves, thus sending the Klan into voluntary exile for the next fifty years. One of those exiles was the author’s great-grandfather John Farris, who left his long-standing home in York, South Carolina one Fall morning and allegedly rode 800 miles to lose himself in the Ozark Mountains. This story, as well as that of thousands of others, is what led the author back to the trials that dismantled the Klan.

TR's Last War is a riveting new account of Theodore Roosevelt’s impassioned crusade for military preparedness as America fitfully stumbles into World War I, spectacularly punctuated by his unique tongue-lashings of the vacillating Woodrow Wilson, his rousing advocacy of a masculine, pro-Allied “Americanism,” a death-defying compulsion for personal front-line combat, a tentative rapprochement with GOP power brokers—and perhaps even another presidential campaign. David Pietrusza’s books include 1932: The Rise of Hitler and FDR--Two Tales of Politics, Betrayal, and Unlikely Destiny; 1920: The Year of Six Presidents; Rothstein: The Life, Times, and Murder of the Criminal Genius Who Fixed the 1919 World Series; 1948: Harry Truman’s Improbable Victory and the Year that Transformed America’s Role in the World; and 1960: LBJ vs. JFK vs. Nixon: The Epic Campaign that Forged Three Presidencies. Rothstein was a finalist for an Edgar Award, and 1920 was honored as by Kirkus as among their “Books of the Year.” Pietrusza has appeared on Good Morning America, Morning Joe, The Voice of America, The History Channel, ESPN, NPR, and CSPAN. He has spoken at The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, The National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, and various universities and festivals. He lives in upstate New York. Visit http://davidpietrusza.com.

Snow A History of the World's Most Fascinating Flake By Anthony R. Wood
February 2021 272 pages Hardback 9781633885943 ÂŁ18.95 / $24.95
From "Winter Wonderland" to "Snowmageddon," we've had a long, love-hate relationship with snow. This entertaining look at snow in all its delightful and fearsome manifestations delves into science, history, economics, and popular culture to examine snow's enduring hold on the imagination. Through profiles and anecdotes, the author discusses the reactions throughout history to snowfall. Snow, beautiful and magical, was sometimes considered one of nature's blessings. But then it was also a nuisance needing to be managed and moved, and worse, a terrifying, sometimes-crippling catastrophe to be battled. Blizzards and highvolume snowfall presented a serious obstacle to progress, travel, growth, and industry. Readers will learn about the making and removing of snow, the psychology of winter, and the history of snow in literature, art, and popular culture. The author also summarizes the current scientific understanding of major winter weather events and what is known about the complex interplay between the jet stream and the Gulf Stream. Despite sophisticated computer modeling, accurate forecasting is still a challenge. Finally, the book considers the impact of global warming on snowfall and the potential for causing a water crisis in the West and major losses in the winter recreation industry. Whether you look forward to months on the ski slopes or loathe the effects of winter on your daily commute, you'll come away from this book with a new appreciation for this amazing and important natural phenomenon.

Sally Rand American Sex Symbol By William Elliott Hazelgrove
January 2021 280 pages Hardback 9781493038596 £20.95 / $26.95
She would appear in more than thirty films and be named after a Road Atlas by Cecil B Demille. A football play would be named after her. She would appear on To Tell the Truth. She would be arrested six times in one day for indecency. She would be immortalized in the final scene of The Right Stuff, cartoons, popular culture, and live on as the iconic symbol of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1933. She would pave the way for every sex symbol to follow from Marilyn Monroe to Lady Gaga. She would die penniless and in debt. In the end, Sammy Davis Jr. would write her a $10,000 check when she had nothing left. Her name was Sally Rand. Until now, there has not been a biography of Sally Rand. But you can draw a line from her to Lana Turner, Marilyn Monroe, Raquel Welch, Ann Margret, Madonna, and Lady Gaga. She broke the mold in 1933, by proclaiming the female body as something beautiful and taking it out of the strip club with her ethereal fan dance. She was a poor girl from the Ozarks who ran away with a carnival, then joined the circus, and finally made it to Hollywood where Cecil B Demille set her on the road to fame with silent movies. When the talkies came her career collapsed, and she ended up in Chicago, broke, sleeping in alleys. Two ostrich feathers in a second-hand store rescued her from obscurity. William Elliott Hazelgrove has a Masters in History and is the best-selling author of ten novels and five narrative nonfiction books: Madame President: The Secret Presidency of Edith Wilson, Forging a President: How the West Created Teddy Roosevelt (Regnery Publishing), Al Capone and the 1933 World’s Fair (Rowman and Littlefield). He lives in Chicago, Illinois.

What, and Give Up Showbiz? Six Decades in the Music Business By Fred Taylor
January 2021 264 pages Hardback 9781493051847 £21.95 / $27.95
“What, and give up showbiz?” is the punch line of a well-known joke in the entertainment world. It’s also the perfect tagline for Fred Taylor’s six decades of developing three world-class clubs and discovering, promoting, presenting, and managing many of today’s great stars. Here’s how it all happened. Fred Taylor was born in Boston and grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. He graduated from Newton High School and Boston University. While at BU, he led his own group as a drummer. Upon graduation, he entered the family business selling Serta mattresses, where he worked for nine years. However, at night Taylor was in the music world, going to all the jazz clubs in Boston. With his first tape recorder, in 1952, he recorded Dave Brubeck’s group at George Wein’s Storyville nightclub. This led to Dave Brubeck being signed with Columbia Records. Taylor’s been working for 55 years with the greatest talents in the world of jazz, pop, and comedy. Coauthor Richard Vacca is the author of Boston Jazz Chronicles: Faces, Places and Nightlife, 1937–1962. He has worked with Fred Taylor as a coauthor and manager of Taylor’s extensive collection of art, photos, and artifacts.

POLITICS
Several decades ago, penicillin, vitamin C, and many other prescription and over-thecounter products were manufactured in the United States. But with the rise of globalization, antibiotics, antidepressants, birth control pills, blood pressure medicines, cancer drugs, among many others are made in China and sold in the United States. China's biggest impact on the US drug supply is making essential ingredients for thousands of medicines found in American homes and used in hospital intensive care units and operating rooms. The authors convincingly argue that there are at least two major problems with this scenario. First, it is inherently risky for the United States to become dependent on any one country as a source for vital medicines, especially given the uncertainties of geopolitics. For example, if an altercation in the South China Sea causes military personnel to be wounded, doctors may rely upon medicines with essential ingredients made by the adversary. Second, lapses in safety standards and quality control in Chinese manufacturing are a risk. Citing the concerns of FDA officials and insiders within the pharmaceutical industry, the authors document incidents of illness and death caused by contaminated medications that prompted reform. This probing book examines the implications of our reliance on China on the quality and availability of vital medicines.
