ORAL TRADITIONS IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA

Through a historical survey and analyses of oral traditions like fairy tales, proverbs, and ballads, among others, that are still in vigorous practice in China today, this informative and stimulating book proposes a theoretical framework for interpreting how and why traditions continue or discontinue in any culture.

Juwen Zhang is professor of Chinese and folklore at Willamette University, Salem, Oregon.

Voices from the Favelas Media Activism and CounterNarratives from Below By Fernanda Amaral

March 2021 198 pages Hardback 9781538147436 £85.00 / $110.00

This book offers a unique perspective as it presents a comparative analysis of favela representation in mainstream media and social networks, addressing the criminalization of the favelas in the media as a critical factor in the process of legitimizing structural violence, and offering a critical reflection on the work of favela media activists.

Fernanda Amaral is a researcher at LEMRI (UFRJ/BRAZIL) and Media Discourse Centre (DMU, UK) and holds a doctorate in Media Discourse from De Montfort University. Her work focuses on the representation of the favelas in the media and the use of social networks as counterpublics.

Racism without Racists Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in America 6th Edition By Eduardo Bonilla-Silva

November 2021 400 pages Paperback 9781538151419 £35.00 / $45.00

Racism Without Racists examines in detail how Whites talk, think, and account for the existence of racial inequality, and argues that color-blind racism has emerged as the fountain of frames, stylistic components, and racial stories Whites rely on to articulate their views on racial affairs.

Eduardo Bonilla-Silva is the James B. Duke Professor of sociology at Duke University. He gained visibility in the social sciences with his 1997 American Sociological Review article, “Rethinking Racism: Toward a Structural Interpretation,” where he challenged analysts to study racial matters structurally rather than from the sterile prejudice perspective. His book, Racism Without Racists, has become a classic in the field and influen ced scholars in education, religious studies, political science, rhetoric, psychology, political science, legal studies, and sociology. He is also the author of four other books: White Supremacy and Racism in the Post-Civil Rights Era (co-winner of the 2002 Oliver Cox Award given by the American Sociological Association); White Out: The Continuing Significance of Racism (with Ashley Doane); in 2008 Wh ite Logic, White Methods: Racism and Methodology (with Tukufu Zuberi and also the co-winner of the 2009 Oliver Cox Award); and in 2011 State of White Supremacy: Racism, Governance, and the United States (with Moon Kie Jung and João H. Costa Vargas). Bonilla-Silva received the Lewis Coser Award in 2007, given by the Theory Section of the American Sociological Association for Theoretical-Agenda Setting a nd, in 2011, the Cox-Johnson-Frazier Award given by the American Sociological Association “to an individual or individuals for their work in the intellectual traditions of the work of these three African American scholars.” He served as President of the Southern Sociological Society and the American Sociological Association in 2017-2018.
