Computer-Mediated Communication A Theoretical and Practical Introduction to Online Human Communication By Caleb T. Carr As so much of our human interaction passes through digital channels, it is essential to understand how being online influences how we communicate with others and ourselves. This textbook introduces students to the fundamental concepts, theories, and applications of computer-mediated communication. Building a foundational understanding of CMC theories, such as CFO, SIP, SIDE, and hyperpersonal, Caleb T. Carr introduces as framework students may use to understand human communication across all digital channels—including those that have yet to exist! Computer-Mediated Communication explores how CMC intersects with and affects other communication subdisciplines, including interpersonal, organizational, and intergroup. Contemporary examples illustrate theories and application, but the text is written to allow and encourage students to think about their own media use in a broader and channel-agnostic mindset, applying what they learn beyond just Instagram and Snapchat, to make sense of their modern and digital world.

Sex Crimes and Offenders

Exploring Questions of Character and Culture By Mary Clifford and Alison Feigh

Sex Crimes and Offenders emphasizes the need to focus on individual perpetrators while also stressing the importance of looking at the offender’s social and cultural environments, as well as the social and political responses designed to hold perpetrators accountable and help support victims. For decades, and in some cases centuries, individuals, families, and friends of victims sought out ways to help heal the hurts caused by sexual abuse and implement some way to protect against future harms. The recent very public conversations about victims standing up to perpetrators has expanded the reach and public platform of sexual violence prevention efforts in critical ways. What might appear a relatively simple task on the surface, to define “healthy” and “harmful” sexual practices, inevitably raises even more questions. When the questions and answers are framed and defined through historical, cultural, social, and individual lenses, solutions may seldom be simple.

One mission of the writer is to enable an open minded reader to think for himself or herself, to understand, to imagine, to reflect, and to exercise good judgement when thinking about the principle issues related to the American criminal justice system. Library Management Problems Today Case Studies

Edited by Wayne Disher

“The realistic library workplace scenarios included in this book are the perfect tool for students to develop their problem-solving skills. They will especially appreciate hearing how library leaders would handle these situations. ” —Sandra Hirsh, College of Professional and Global Education, San Jose State University Here’s the first comprehensive case studies in library management book to be published since 1981! The book use case studies gleaned from TODAY’S library world to help students take analytical approaches to library problems. Much research points to the fact that students are more inductive than deductive reasoners. Therefore, books like this which provide actual examples to explore and think about are far more useful than many of the existing texts which start with theory and basic principles. Case studies are often used in business, law, and medical schools. This book will facilitate instructors pushing want students to explore how what they have learned applies to real world situations.

Martinez, University of Tennessee

Patterns of Interstate Conflict from WWI to Iraq Second Edition By Greg Cashman and Leonard C. Robinson “Cashman and Robinson’s detailed case studies of some of the most important interstate wars of the past century are guided by theory and well grounded in the historical literature. They nicely highlight both the complexity of the causes of war and the persistence of recurrent patterns. An Introduction to the Causes of War provides one of the best combinations of theory and history of the causes of war that one can find in a single book for the undergraduate classroom.” —Jack S. Levy, Rutgers University This pioneering book explains the causes of war through a sustained combination of theoretical insights and detailed case studies from WWI to the Iraq War. Cashman and Robinson find that, while all wars have multiple causes, specific factors typically combine in identifiable “dangerous patterns” that lead to bloody conflicts between countries. Greg Cashman is professor emeritus of political science at Salisbury University. Leonard C. Robinson is professor of political science at Salisbury University.

Spare No One

Mass Violence in Roman Warfare By Gabriel Baker

“Gabriel Baker provides a grim but important contribution to our understanding of Roman violence: atrocity and massacre were not simply adjacent or ancillary to Roman warfare but rather represented fundamental modalities of Roman military practice, alongside pitched battles and sieges. Military histories that gloss over such atrocities not only sanitize Roman war making but misunderstand it. Baker’s book presents us with a clear-eyed and unflinching vision of Roman violence.” —Michael Taylor, University at Albany

Imprint: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Series: War and Society February 2021 292 pages

Paperback In Spare No One, Gabriel Baker convincingly shows that mass 978-1-5381-1221-2 violence was vital to Roman military operations. Indeed, $36.00 / £28.00 in virtually every war they fought during the third and Hardback second centuries BC, the Roman legions killed and enslaved 978-1-5381-1220-5 populations, executed prisoners, and put cities to the torch. $89.00 / £68.00 This powerful book reveals that these violent acts were not eBook normally the handiwork of frenzied soldiers run amok, nor 978-1-5381-1222-9 were they spontaneous outbursts of uncontrolled savagery. $34.00 / £26.00 On the contrary—and more troublingly—Roman commanders deliberately used these brutal strategies to achieve their most critical military objectives and political goals. Bringing long-overdue attention to this littleknown aspect of Roman history, Baker paints a fuller, albeit darker, picture of Roman warfare. Gabriel Baker holds a PhD in history from the University of Iowa and specializes in Roman and Hellenistic warfare.

What Do We Know About War? Third Edition

Edited by Sara McLaughlin Mitchell and John A. Vasquez

“This new volume features an expanded cast of experts who have written entirely original chapters, often about new topics not covered in previous editions in the series. The volume even boasts a new co-editor, Sara McLaughlin Mitchell. She and John Vasquez have done something rather difficult: they have taken an excellent collection and made it even better! What Do We Know About War? is as important for advanced-undergraduate and graduate courses as it is for scholars conducting their own research on war.” —Douglas Lemke, Pennsylvania State University This invaluable text assesses the current research and theory on the causes of both war and peace. In a completely new set of chapters, leading international relations scholars explore the role of territorial disputes, power, alliances, arms races, rivalry, and nuclear weapons in bringing about war; the outcomes and consequences of war; and the factors that promote peace, including democracy, norms, capitalist economies, and stable borders. The third edition includes a new section on emerging trends in research on cyber war, the environment and climate change, leaders, war financing, and trends in interstate conflict.

Diffractive Reading

New Materialism, Theory, Critique Edited by Kai Merten

Diffractive Reading ultimately represents a new reading of reading itself: firstly by critiquing the distanced perspective of critical paradigms such as translation and intertextuality, in which texts encountered, processed or otherwise subdued; secondly, showing how all literary and cultural readings represent different ‘agential cuts’ in the world-text-reader constellation, which is always both discursive and material; and thirdly, the volume materializes, dynamizes and politicizes the activity of reading by drawing attention to reading’s intervention in, and (co)creation of, the world in which we live.

Kai Merten is professor of British literature at the University of Erfurt. His main research and teaching interests are British literature and culture from various medial, material and global perspectives. He is the founder of the Erfurt Network on New Materialism (ENNM) and has initiated cooperations in the field of New Materialist methodologies with similar research groups in Erfurt (Max-WeberKolleg), Weimar, Utrecht, Berlin, Aarhus, Odense, Kiel and Warsaw.

Harmony in Chinese Thought

A Philosophical Introduction Edited by Chenyang Li, Sai Hang Kwok and Dascha Düring

“The range of ideas covered in the book is stunning; in my view this is the first academic text offering a comprehensive landscape of philosophical traditions in China. The value of this landscape is all the more compelling given the relative neglect of harmony in Western political thought during recent centuries. ” —Fred R. Dallmayr, Packey J. Dee Professor Emeritus, University of Notre Dame

Imprint: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers

He, or harmony, has traditionally been a central concept in Chinese thought, and to this day continues to shape the way in which people in China and East Asia think about ethics and politics. Yet, there is no systematic and comprehensive introduction of harmony as has been variously articulated in different Chinese schools. This edited volume aims to fill this gap. The individual contributions elaborate the conceptions of harmony as these were exemplified in central Chinese schools of thought, including Daoism, Confucianism, Legalism, Mohism, Buddhism, and trace their impact on contemporary Chinese philosophy. The volume explores the various meanings and implications of harmony so as to consider its relevance as a value and virtue in the modern world.

Refugees

Towards a Politics of Responsibility By Nathan Bell

“In his search for a radical rethinking of what constitutes politics, Nathan Bell draws our attention to the failure of politics fuelled by forgetfulness and loss.” — Michelle Boulous Walker, University of Queensland There have never been more refugees, across the world from Myanmar to Syria, than at this moment. Many more millions of refugees are likely to be displaced by the effects of climate change. Why has politics failed to produce adequate responses to these challenges, and not heeded the lessons of refugee crises of the past? Are human rights and international law, or more radically, the case for ‘open borders’, sufficient to address them? Nathan Bell argues for nothing less than a new concept of the political: that societies (liberal or not, in the mode of the sovereign state or some other form) embrace an ethos of responsibility for others, where the right to seek asylum becomes foundational for politics itself. Such a proposal is at the antipodes of Schmitt’s friend-enemy distinction, such that hospitality and not hostility forms the basis of political decisionmaking.

Contemporary Cases in U.S. Foreign Policy From National Security to Human Security Sixth Edition By Ralph Carter

This engaging case study approach brings together a diverse set of contributors to help students question motives, consider alternatives, and analyze outcomes in many of the most controversial foreign policy issues now confronting the United States. Many actors―from the president and members of Congress to interest groups, NGOs, and the media―compete to shape U.S. foreign policy. While previous editions of this popular text focused more on national security issues in the wake of 9/11 and the War on Terror, the 13 case studies in this edition deal with a wide range of policy areas: national security, homeland security, diplomacy, trade, immigration, epidemics, climate change, and Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Many reflect how the demarcation between foreign and domestic policy has become even more blurred and polarization has come to plays a significantly increased role in American foreign policy. Ralph Carter is Piper Professor of Political Science at Texas Christian University where he has been teaching undergraduate IR and foreign policy for more than 30 years.
