01. in the Depression of the City

Hotel Design Site Location: Nanjing Individual Academic Work From May 2018 - July 2018 Supervisor: Sun Liang This project is located in Liuhe digging,Nanjing. Under the background of China staying in the transition of economic development, coal industr y has been experiencing the process from glory to wane. The site where was the vital lifeline of Nanjing have already passed into silence. What I am concerning is trying to repair broken landscape, reactivate the area and inspire the redevelopment by constructing this hotel, which attracting people to tour at here.

Master Plan

Site Analysis The site is located in an old abandoned iron mine. The Iron Mine was founded in 1957. After more than 50 years of exploitation, the resources tend to be exhausted. The mine is about 800 meters east and west, 200 meters wide north and south, and more than 100 meters deep. It is the largest man-made Grand Canyon and the largest dry water pit in Jiangsu Province. The situation of the surrounding area is complicated. The elements like mountain, railway, museum and park.

Generation Process of Concept

Generation Process of Concept The form of the pit can be abstracted into a crescent shape, and I hope to use the gentle border of the circle to echo the site. Starting from the circle on the plane, it is stretched into a cylinder embedded in the pit in three-dimensional space. Since the form of the pit is narrow, the diameter of the bottom of the cylinder is reduced to make it more suitable for the terrain. The above ground part is sleeved with the ring of the underground part by another ring, and the relationship between the two is strengthened by the cuboid connection of the core tube. The core tube serves as both a structural support for the entire building and as a communication space for two units. Site

Site Cone

Cylinder

[Step 1] From the cone par t to the spring-shaped space, the deeper the depth of the space is more obvious, and it is better to echo the mountain behind the site. Moreover, the spring under the spiral forms a space of "inner" and "outer", and the two never overlap. Naturally divided the nature of space.

[Step 2] The helical spring space creates a more complex structural problem because the spring itself is unstable and the building itself has a large span. Therefore, I use a relatively lightweight and strong steel frame structure. In addition, the pillars running up and down the building are triangularly overlapped, increasing the stability of the overall structure.

Creator Space Design Site Location: Xuzhou Team Work, Competition Work (Collaborated Presentations are Marked "*") From November 2017 - December 2017 Supervisor: Deng Yuanyuan Contribution: Design, Drawing / Contribution Rate: 50% / Partner: Ren Yujia|Shu Anzhi|Xie Wenchi This project is located in Pengcheng Square,Xuzhou. Under the background of Internet age, new entrepreneurial model leads a new trend. I designed the Creator Space, which aimed to solve the problems of loose urban interior space and high cost of entrepreneurship for young people. With low cost and mobility as the premise of my design, mobile monomers that are easy to disassemble and install and frameworks that can be quickly built were generated. The mobility of monomers could not only fill the loose areas of the city, but also facilitate the communication between entrepreneurs and consumers.

Site Analysis

Finding Problems

The site is located in Pengcheng Square in the center of Xuzhou. The location is very good. There are shopping malls, hospitals and hotels in the surrounding area. There are many pedestrians in the past, which is an optimal choice for building the creator space. Even though the surrounding area is very active, there are not many people inside the square. Pedestrians often only pass through the edge of the square and do not stay at the square.

[Problem 1] Nowadays, many creator spaces often have single form, single function and lack of creative atmosphere. What is more, The preventure investment of the base is huge, and it is difficult for investors to make a profit in the short term. Meanwhile, Because entrepreneurs are mostly fresh graduates, there is a shortage of funds for them. [Problem 2] Entrepreneurs are isolated from each other and lack communication. They always do their own things, and lack creative collision between them. In the end, they will lose the enthusiasm of entrepreneurship. What's more, due to the occlusion of information, entrepreneurs do not understand the real needs of the customers, which seriously reduces the efficiency of creativity.

Solving Problems Fildwork [Solution 1] Creating a highly industrialized modular production base with three layers, each of which consists of 81 identical units, each of which is a 3.6 m x 3.6 m square box. The first floor is the parking space of spare small units, and the second and third floors are the working space.

From the survey results, our design strategy is to set the main entrance to the west to attract more people into the square.

According to the survey results, we conclude that on the working day, the people around the site are mainly office workers.

Mobile

[Solution 2] Several small units parked on the first floor of the Creator Space can be moved to all over the city. The small unit that moves out will become the medium for the customers to communicate with the makers, allowing the makers to penetrate the customers and understand the needs of them.

[Solution 3] The space can be freely divided according to the grid. The black color in the figure is units and the white part is the public communication space. This mode can meet the needs of different people.

From the survey results, the path of the pedestrians on the weekends has no obvious purpose. Therefore, the establishment of the creator space can attract pedestrians to enter the square.

According to the survey results, people tend to take part in activities in the weekends evening. Therefore, the design of the creator space can be the gathering space to attract more people.

Conceptual interpretation

Establish a 9mĂ—9m coordinate system in the site.

The creator center is a combination of units, and the center is increased as the number of entrepreneurs increases, achieving the purpose of growth.

The structural steel frame is made of 100mm steel so that the plane can be laid out freely.

Small units can be flexibly placed according to the function of the room and the needs of the entrepreneur.

One floor is overhead. Movable units can enter and exit freely.

The creator center is arranged around the atrium, where green plants can be planted between the frames to provide entrepreneurs with a good working environment.

Doorframe Door

Put the unit into the frame according to actual needs to form the creator center.

The freely combined units and spacious public communication space provide entrepreneurs with a good environment for innovation and communication.

Wallboard

Floor board Small units can stay anywhere in the city, and attracting nearby consumers to communicate with entrepreneurs.

Many creator spaces are arranged around a base camp, and the base camp meets the needs of large spaces such as reports and displays.

Reinforcing Stell Bar Window Window Frame

According to different types of entrepreneurs, different forms of customer-creating units are formed.

19

Many creator centers can form groups and connect them in corridors to achieve unlimited growth in the horizontal direction.

There are a number of possibilities

First Floor Plan 1

Second Floor Plan 1

First Floor Plan 2 Regular small units are studios that enable entrepreneurs to work close to consumers and strengthen their connections with consumers.

The two small units can be combined to combine the functions of the studio and the reception room, so that the entrepreneurs can communicate with the customers during the work process and inspire the inspiration.

Some entrepreneurs with special needs can combine three or more small units to meet the needs of their special work environment, while providing products or services directly to customers.

The small unit can also be used as a reception room which enable entrepreneurs to discuss with customers and collect ideas anytime and anywhere.

Some studios that require multiple entrepreneurs to work together can also be freely laid out to enhance teamwork and inspire.

Multiple small units can also be combined into a temporary meeting room or discussion room, enabling multiple groups of entrepreneurs to communicate with different customers in a timely manner, inspiring in the work process, and improving innovation efficiency and possibilities.

Second Floor Plan 2

Through the investigation and analysis of the status quo, we designed the ideal creator space: the creator center has three layers, each layer is divided into 81 grids of the same size. The function is satisfied by placing a small box on the grid. The box can be added according to the number of makers to form a longitudinal growth. The first floor is the entrance of the creator center and the empty box is placed here. The second floor and the third floor are basic function rooms. The plane of the building can be arranged by the entrepreneurs without affecting the traffic. The small units can also be freely combined according to the needs. The large-scale traffic space and the atrium provide a rich communication space for the entrepreneurs, so that they have more inspiration and creativity.

03. at the Abandoned Point in the City

Boiler Room Renovation Design Site Location: Xuzhou Individual Academic Work From May 2017 - July 2017 Supervisor: Han Daqing The building which original function was the boiler room is located in a elderly community of Xuzhou. With the development of the era, the boiler room has been abandoned. The people in the original community lacked communication and contact , and the relationship between neighbors was highly alienate and indifferent from each other due to the high density of buildings and single residential space, so the market emerged as the new function. "A critical issue of contemporary culture and the architectural profession is the role architecture can play in repairing the built environment and giving new life to tired places for great community benefit." ——Thomas Masullo Sustainability was paramount – not only in environmentally sustainable design but also through the economic, social and cultural impact of the site’s regeneration. This space contributes to a vibrant community life.

[Lack of Communication]

[Elderly and children]

There is no public space for residents to gather together.

Most of the residents in the community are elderly and children, who need barrier-free design, such as ramps and barrier-free elevators.

1 Traditional market form: setting up stalls on the streets where crowded for bearing the functions which are not belonging to them.

[Lack of Exhibition]

[Lack of Green Space]

There is no public space for residents to attend a show.

There is little space for planting trees but all for dwellings.

Some of the current markets are just sheltering from the rain, and there are no green plants and active spaces.

The apartments has made the relationship between neighbors highly alienate for the lack of communication space.

[Lack of Amusement Activity]

[Lack of Reading Space] There is little space like library for resident to reading.

Residents have no chance to relax themselves. They have to take care of their grand son.

Behind the site is a mountain covered by the forest, and next to the site is a secondary commecial street. However both the forest and the street are blocked by the dense old buildings in the site, my design strategy is to combine market's soil covered terrace and roof with plants and to design a transparent plant house, letting the citizens enjoy the view of the plants and easily reach it while going through the site.

The strategy of combining market's soil covered terrace and roof with plants can effectively alleviate atmospheric dust and purify the air, meanwhile protect the top of the building. What's more it can extend the ser vice life of the roof, and reduce the use of air conditioners for its heat insulation, so it will save energy. Two floors of urban forests inside the building provide naturally shaded green spaces, cool the air and reduce the sun’s thermal load on the roof.

Thermal pressure ventilation is a kind of natural ventilation. The difference in air density between indoor and outdoor air causes a difference in air pressure, which c re a t e s a p re s s u re d i f f e re n c e between the hot air and the downward air. The building is 17 meters high and has sufficient height to provide space for venting. It greatly reduces the frequency of use of indoor ventilation equipment and reduces carbon emissions. The special structure of the roof could absorbs rainwater and is introduced into the underground water storage tank through the pipeline.

04. as the Dividing Line of the City

Campus Boundary Research Site Location: Xuzhou Team Work, Research Work (Collaborated Presentations are Marked "*") From June 2017 - August 2017 Supervisor: Ethan Kim Contribution: Design, Drawing / Contribution Rate: 50% / Partner: Fan Jiayi|Shi Chunyu|Zhao Ziye China University of Mining and Technology Nanhu Campus is located in Tongshan District, Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, and was completed in 2007. Different from the bustling city center where the old campus is located, the location of the Nanhu Campus is far from the city center, and the surrounding areas are mostly farmland and villages. The snack street is produced at the crack between the campus and the village, about 200 meters long and 8 meters wide. Since this street in urban planning is not a commercial area, it has become overcrowded because of the opening of shops, the entry of small vendors and the electric vehicles. We hope to establish a new order by changing the invariable form of the traditional fence. Through this order, we can alleviate the crowded streets, alleviate the contradiction between the villagers and the schools, blur the boundaries of the campus, and finally weaken the class.

35

36

Ambiguous Effect of Boundary

Wall, the Product of Social Class

With the continuous development of Chinese society, the demand for expanding the scale of higher education is increasing. With the expansion of University enrollment, the existing campus can not accommodate more students, so more and more universities begin to build new campuses.

We selected a typical university campus in China (including different formats around the campus), and divided and collage its boundaries according to different formats. There are farmland, residential areas and commercial streets around the campus. Different formats include people of different social classes, and they have different ideas about the campus. The students in the school are tired of the same campus life, but have a strong interest in the dazzling human world with its myriad temptations. "People around the city want to escape, while people outside the city want to rush in." Two different classes are separated by walls, without any communication. Such a fence has deepened the class gap between the school and society. The misunderstanding between the two sides may stimulate strong social contradictions, which is not conducive to the development and of human society.

In the past, Chinese urban planning failed to reserve a large vacant lot to meet the needs of universities to build new campuses, while rural land resources are relatively abundant. Therefore, it has become a common phenomenon that the new campus of universities, the product of urban development and expansion, are built at the junction of cities and villages. Because of Chinese social and national conditions, Chinese universities are different from European and American community universities. Considering Chinese large population and mixed personnel around the campus, Chinese university campuses are relatively closed. Although the gates are open to the outside world, the whole campus is isolated by the wall. This has brought some problems to the local villagers. First, the construction of the school as a huge object has hindered the villagers' communication, and they have to take a long way to travel. Secondly, the school also occupies the villagers' public space, and the villagers have no access to the school's playground library and other facilities. As a result, contradictions have arisen between villagers and schools. On the other hand, the establishment of the school has also brought huge business opportunities to nearby residents. Students far from the city center have daily needs for food and entertainment, and the villagers occupied by the farmland also need to maintain the economic source of daily life, so the gap between the campus and the village, the snack street1 emerged as the times require. However, there are still many problems. The “snack street is often narrow, and with the extension of shops and the existence of mobile vendors, the cramped street is more crowded. At mealtime, queuing is a common phenomenon. In order to encourage students to eat in the school cafeteria and ensure the safety of students, the school often establishes high walls outside the campus or limits the opening hours of the school gates. But "there are policies, there are countermeasures", the behavior of turning over walls2 and digging holes3 is very common. There is also take-away services. In the face of the school's discouragement and a closed fence, the take-away industry is also living in the cracks4. Because of the different interests and different classes for the different education of the two sides, many contradictions5 have arisen. We conducted a questionnaire survey for college students across the country. About 200 people participated in this questionnaire. The content of the questionnaire includes the form of the campus boundary and the format inside and outside the campus. The results show that the forms of campus boundary are mostly fences, while the playgrounds in schools are mostly in the periphery of the campus and the snack street outside the fence.
