EDITOR’S WELCOME
editor’s WELCOME F or some summer sun is the spice of life. Me, I need rip roaring fires and crisp chilly mornings to satisfy my soul. The allure of autumnal abundance in lashings of layers, be them jewels or knit, are the perfect preparations for a season of excess. Then when you feel like a fat Christmas turkey who can’t take anymore, in swoops New Year like a breath of fresh air, bliss. Autumn winter is MY season. So when I was asked to guest edit this edition of ROX Woman it was like all my Christmases came at once as the team and I set about creating The Frost Issue. I dusted down my old styling chops to bring you two delicious and
very different fashion stories in Ice, Ice Baby (pages 32-49) and Cold War (pages 50-65). We all expect you to get massive girl crushes over Louise Rusk and Siobhan Mackenzie as they chat about their life, work and style. Our make-up artist Molly Jane Sheridan downs tools from painting the faces of the rich and famous to give us her tips on how to achieve the perfect glossy glow. The Luxury Watch Edit will give you goosebumps as it sits alongside a history of Chopard’s Happy Diamond collection and you’ll be getting to know me a little better on pages 30-31 in our Meet the Editor section. For now, wrap up and settle down while the ROX team and I guide you through The Frost Issue.

MEET THE EDITOR Introducing Lynne McCrossan – a cashmere convert with style running through her veins. A respected stylist, writer and designer Lynne has provided the creative vision behind our latest edition of ROX Woman. Here she offers an insight into her passion for luxury and Scotland’s timeless style.
Y
ou never forget your first time. It was a crisp winters morning in the capital. The cerulean sky doing very little to trap sub zero temperatures. Breathing looked like some smoke filled scene from a 1930s silent film. At the gateway to the Grassmarket stood an unassuming store with knick-knacks spilling out onto the street - the exact kind of place I feel at home shopping in. Manoeuvring a multitude of items at the front door would have put off any rummaging rookie, luckily I am made of sturdier stuff and on this frosty dawn was rewarded for my fashion foraging. Between dusty dresses and sooty books a sunbeam lead me to a jumper, that on the surface looked rather retiring. Black crew neck, t-shirt shaped in nature. As soon as I held it I knew it was different. The feeling was like nothing I had experienced before. I was 19 years old and in that moment a cashmere convert. As teenage years gave way to my twenties this tactile textile became omnipresent.
from high street giants, fast fashion and young designers all the way up to investment buying, established fashion houses and iconic brands. That’s when Chanel entered my orbit and everything changed. It was December 2012. Karl Lagerfeld was about to turn Linlithgow Place into his own personal playground and I was granted a golden ticket to the best show in town. Watching the couture float down the catwalk that night made me see, through fresh eyes, what we had here in Scotland - a textile industry unrivalled by anyone. From that night on I wanted to shout about it. While writing my second book, all about the magical world of Scottish cashmere, my own collection manifested. The book showcased eight of Scotland’s most successful and reputable mill alongside a styling masterclass of timeless cashmere pieces that would stay ageless in any wardrobe. It was during this really routine part of my job as a stylist, scouting the looks to be shot for the book that the wheels were set in motion. Inside the archive at William Lockie I set about finding the perfect argyle, houndstooth, t-shirt,
AS SOON AS I HELD IT I KNEW IT WAS DIFFERENT. THE FEELING WAS LIKE NOTHING I HAD EXPERIENCED BEFORE As a fashion writer and stylist my quest to document all things mode meant that three seasons out of four cashmere would subconsciously find its way into my work. Scottish heritage was something I was resistant to, mainly due to the arrogance of youth and lack of a luxury budget. This transient relationship with trends was breeding an osmosis-like appreciation for artisan items without me even realising. Editorial guidelines dictated the demographic I spoke to across print, radio and television. It would range
wrap cardigan, hoodie and cable knit to be woven and photographed. I loved them so much I knew I had to create a capsule collection out of them and in August 2016 the book launched alongside my line. Four weeks after that I was pregnant with my second child proving the theory that there is nothing quite like a multitasking mother. Cashmere: a guide to Scottish luxury is published by Lauth Press and the Cross Cashmere line is available at www.crosscashmere.com www.rox.co.uk

People always talk about highlighting their cheekbones, but we tend to forget about the rest of those bones. Instead of applying fake tan for a big event try using a liquid highlighter to get your glow. On our model Olivia I have used Sephora liquid highlighter on her collar bones, cupids bow,
the nose bridge, eyebrow bones, cheekbones and even though it sounds weird - her ears as well! Yes, the ears too. Go all out and mix with body oil or moisturiser to use on your legs. To make sure you haven’t missed a spot or used too much simply shine your phone torch on your face in front of a mirror.
PRO TIP You can also mix a drop of liquid highlighter into your foundation to brighten dull skin or create a dewy look. But always remember to use sparingly to avoid becoming a human disco ball under strong lighting and in pictures. www.rox.co.uk

Gloss it up You’ve probably owned a clear lip gloss or have one somewhere in your make up stash. This is one of my most used products and I don’t often use it on the lips at all! For a quick change from day time to evening apply a thin layer of gloss using a small, flat lip brush across your lids after applying your eye make up and pat the edges with your finger to blend out. To make
it last longer over an evening or a long night try and avoid bringing the gloss above the natural crease in your lids. I always apply a layer of mascara after to make sure there is no gloss caught on the lashes. If you’re wearing fake lashes apply them first and avoid bringing the gloss down to the lash glue as it could stop the adhesive from working.

PRO TIP You can also use a gloss that already comes with an applicator for easy touch ups and to avoid sticky brushes in your make up bag. Or use a drop of washing up liquid or hand soap with water to clean your brush after use.

Blush has gotten a bad rep, but it’s a make up essential in the winter months to get some colour back in your cheeks. Lots of my clients are scared of using blusher - probably just a hangover from the 1980s statement blush. I promise, this product will brighten up your skin,
refresh your face and bring back your summer glow. I used PawPaws coloured balm on the lids, lips and cheeks applied with my fingers and blended in with a small powder brush. Remember to blend in to avoid streaks.

Cream blushers create a softer affect and give you a natural highlight on your cheeks. Before you apply blusher test it on the back of your hand to ensure you have the right amount of product on the brush to avoid looking clownish. www.rox.co.uk

HOT RIGHT NOW The temperature may be dropping but things are heating up at ROX this season as we take a look at some of AW17’s hottest jewellery trends. Rachael Taylor shines a spotlight on our winter collections and she's got everything covered from warm autumnal tones to frosty white diamonds. 68730 | £595
A STYLE ICON The choker was the jewellery icon of the summer, with stars like Beyoncé and Cara Delevigne keeping neck adornments high on the style agenda. But don’t expect this trend to disappear with the final festival of the season; chokers were a major feature of AW17 catwalk shows at Chanel, Givenchy, Elie Saab and more. For a wintery twist, swap the hippy black bands of summer for a refined diamond solitaire choker necklace that will transform your clavicle into a delicate twinkling display on dark nights.

The cocktail ring is undeniably back – and just in time for the festive party season. This jewellery box classic has a rich sartorial history, gaining notoriety in the 1920s as a way for rebellious flappers on the underground scene to bring even more attention to the illicit cocktails they sipped. The right-hand ring is also a symbol of fierce feminine independence as traditionally, unlike wedding rings, these were often bought by women for themselves. If coloured gemstones aren’t for you, wear a statement band packed with icy-white diamonds.

DAZZLING CHARM The solar system is having a moment this season. Thierry Mugler dedicated an entire runway show to its jagged star motif, while Maison Margiella presented a shimmering, dystopian view of the future, and Atelier Versace created alien-like full sequin body suits with sharp, angular shoulders and corsetry. For something a little more down to earth but still of the stars, map out your astrology sign in diamonds on pendants and rings, and keep these brilliant personal talismans close to you at all times.

Added some extra ear piercings recently? Of course, you have; or you’ve at least thought about it. Trips to the piercing bar are no longer just for teens, and building up stylish ear stacks has become a chic pursuit. To get the look right, keep this mantra in mind: tiny, precious, plentiful. Superdelicate designs like miniscule diamond studs give multiple piercings a grown-up edge. They also look great on their own for anyone who has been strong enough to resist the call of the piercing gun.

Somebody at some point has probably told you that you shouldn’t mix your metals. Consider that myth debunked here and now. Stacks of rings are a great way to express your own personal style and create an edit of what you love, and if you can’t decide between rose, white or gold metals, go for all three. You won’t regret it. Look for dainty rings that contrast stylishly with one another, and to tap into another of the season’s key looks, invest in stacking rings dotted with delicate diamonds.
TURN UP THE HEAT Just because the mercury is dropping shouldn’t mean that all your jewel choices should become icy by comparison. Instead, bring some warmth to your outfits this season with flattering yellow gold. As Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci’s AW17 collections lavishly demonstrated, yellow gold jewellery works well with this season’s dramatic evening looks, from rich jeweltoned velvet suits to layers of black tulle.

ill you marry me? Four simple words join forces to create a truly life changing question. An unforgettable moment where time stands still, a proposal has long been the ultimate romantic gesture. So it is little wonder that such a monumental occasion requires a spectacular piece of jewellery to capture the emphatic feeling. Austria’s Archduke Maximilian I presented the first diamond engagement ring on record to his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy in 1477. The ring was placed on the third finger of her left hand, based on an ancient Egyptian belief that this finger contained a ‘love vein’ that ran directly to the heart. With a heritage dating back thousands of years, naturally there are a wealth of different engagement ring styles each with their own unique charm and finish. However, there is no escaping that there are classics that have continued to enchant, becoming timeless staples of engagement ring design. Award winning jewellers ROX has proudly committed itself to all things diamonds and thrills since it first opened its doors in Glasgow’s iconic Argyll Arcade in 2002 – with sparkling engagement rings being the jewel in the crown of the brand’s specialities. Inspired by designs of the past whilst continually keeping a close watch on the latest techniques and trends to come, it is a shining example of master craftsmanship. Master craftsman take more than 30 hours to hand finish each diamond engagement ring, ensuring each is crafted to suit the size cut and shape of each individual diamond. However, every journey starts with a single step and in the case of each ring design that comes in the form of setting. Not all ring settings are created equal. Diamonds are nature’s little miracles brought to life by skilled diamond cutters. Such a precious, skilfully manipulated natural phenomenon deserves to be set into something created with the same level of care and attention. Think of a ring’s setting as the pedestal upon which your diamond will be showcased in all its beauty and brilliance! Hand-crafted by skilled artisans at their workshops in London, every ROX engagement ring is built around the handpicked diamond that it will hold. Every minute detail is meticulously finished to perfection – right down to polishing the inside of the rings head – a work of art

worthy of displaying something so precious and beautiful! Delicate and romantic pieces are a firm focus of the Love collection. Diamonds are closely set side by side in a single row almost touching on either side of the centre stone. Dainty petite claws on either side of the stone holds each in place always ensuring there is minimal metal either side of the stones giving a very fine elegant look. The Adore setting is another charming collection, complete with a secret arch of exquisite diamonds below the main diamond, highlighting that there is more to some settings than meets the eye. Complete with a thread and grain setting, in which each stone is delicately framed it is a perfect example of just how playful and feminine engagement rings can be. Part of the charm of engagement rings is that each design is pure, with the diamond being the centrepiece of the beautifully crafted design. At ROX, the Honour collection lets the diamond do all the talking. Exuding classic elegance, it is a collection filled with breathtaking designs hand finished to the highest standards. Each Love, Honour and Adore ring boasts claws which are beautifully finished in fine talons. The time and effort that goes into producing the perfect talon is what determines its quality. Expert craftsmen work hard to ensure talons are not too long, nor too short and stubby to create a truly luxurious design. Finding the perfect diamond is no small task and universal standards have been put in place to ensure designers hold themselves to quality at all times. Typically the jewellery industry holds itself to what is known as the 4Cs – representing cut, colour, clarity and carat. However, ROX goes one step further adding certification to create the unique 5Cs. Such is the brand’s commitment to quality, most of its engagement rings come with a certificate highlighting the quality of the diamond. Diamonds are naturally stunning, but it takes a skilled craftsman to unlock its true beauty. Shaping a diamond is a fastidious task, taking up to 20 hours to cut and polish a diamond by hand. It’s a lengthy but vital process and instrumental in unlocking a diamond’s beauty and sparkle. Sourced from Africa, Russia and Canada and polished in Antwerp or Israel, each diamond is hand selected by qualified experts for their superior cut, presence and beauty. business for almost two decades. She has helped produce designs that have made a mark on family histories across the country, ensuring that the art of craftsmanship is at the heart of every design along the way. “It’s an honour to become part of a client’s story,” she says. “Buying an engagement ring is possibly one of the most thought-out decisions someone will ever make and it’s important never to lose sight of that. “ROX engagement rings are designed inhouse and hand crafted at our London workshop where hours of thought and consideration go into creating stunning pieces designed to last a lifetime. “Only one per cent of the diamonds we see actually make it into each handcrafted design, with expertly trained diamond specialists finding the best in cut, colour and clarity to create mesmerising designs that will forever sparkle and shine.” As engagement ring styles continue to evolve, there is an increasing demand for modern and forward thinking pieces. Crisscut diamonds - exclusive to ROX - are increasing in popularity for couples keen to opt for something a little different without losing a traditional feel. “The beauty of engagement ring design is that although there is a really traditional aspect there is also the chance to transform classic styles with modern technology,” Donna adds. “It’s important to find a ring that captures the

style and personality of the person wearing it so it’s important that designs continue to evolve to allow this. Crisscut diamonds are a great example of the evolution of engagement rings. “Cut using advanced technology, the Crisscut boasts 85 facets which optimise reflection of light, intensifying brilliance. A combination of long and short crisscross facets create a feeling of length and depth within the stone, highlighting its natural beauty. “Packed with staggering elegance this exclusive design is a celebration of character and individuality – perfect for couples looking for something a little different. It’s a modern classic, something quite special.” Creating heirlooms of the future isn’t something that can be done in a blink of an eye. Dedicated master craftsmen spend hours finishing each individual rings to ensure perfect symmetry and a refined look. From setting the gem by hand to going the extra mile and polishing the inside of the head of the ring, they continually strive for perfection to create unforgettable rings. In a world where the pace of life is continually increasing and products are designed and sold in what seems like an instant, the engagement ring is almost like a charm out of time. Not simply produced in the blink of an eye an engagement ring is proof that good things really do come to those who wait. AUDEMARS PIGUET
CHOPARD
ROYAL OAK QUARTZ
HAPPY SPORT 36MM
BIG BANG BLUE DIAMOND
Most iconic designs get little tweaks and twists to help bring them up to date and more in tune with current trends, but the octagonal framed, bracelet-strapped Royal Oak hasn’t changed since its designer Gerald Genta was asked to come up with an “sports watch for all occasions”. This version, with its tobacco dial and warm rose-gold tones, is the quintessence of an autumnal watch. Team with this season’s hottest combination – a chunky knit and sequinned skirt – to emphasis its sporty/ sophisticated credentials. 67766 | £29,000
It’s hard to believe that this iconic piece of watch design is nearly 25 years old. There are now many iterations, all with the trademark diamonds gambolling around the dial and, while this version conforms to the early “precious stones with stainless steel” ethos, it adds a little extra pizazz into the equation. The stainless steel bracelet is shot through with 18ct rose gold, which is also used on the bezel and crown. The diamond quota has been upped significantly thanks to a 38-strong circle of brilliants. Despite all these luxe touches, it still manages to exude that effortless sporty chicness that made it famous. 67642 | £20,190
There’s a reason why blue dials have become perennially popular. As a colour, it’s not as challenging as, say, red or green, it’s more interesting than white but not as aggressive as black. And finally, as you can see from this Hublot, it really makes diamonds pop. Clocking in at an impressive 38mm, Hublot’s Big Bang might not entirely suit those who are delicate of wrist but if you are in the market for a stone-set take on the boyfriend style then this is just the watch for you. 67865 | £9,000

BREMONT SOLO 32 ROSE GOLD This latest iteration of Bremont’s “pilot watches for women” range (aka the Solo 32) is as elegant and refined as the female pilot who inspired it - Lettice Curtis. Curtis was a test flight engineer and pilot during, and indeed, after WWII and this Bremont feels like the brand’s approximation of what she would have worn off-duty. The rose gold and Roman numerals help to feminise the black dial and strap, while at 32mm, it is robust enough to be a daily wearer but not so large that it wouldn’t look out of place at those occasions where an ice-cold martini is also deemed appropriate. 67850 | £7,995

CLAIR DE ROSE 34MM
G-TIMELESS MOONPHASE
BRS NOVAROSA FULL DIAMONDS
While Tudor has been garnering Instagram likes with all the voracity of a Kardashian, the watches always felt a bit male-centric. Thankfully this year, it has turned its attention to the female market and totally redesigned its Clair de Rose collection. Gone are the slightly dated flowery designs on the dial and in its place is a pared-back steel and (optional) diamond collection that is clean, classic and automatic. This version is a cashmere jumper of a watch – luxurious yet practical and once you have it you’ll wonder how you coped without it. 67944 | £2,040
Since Alessandro Michele took over at Gucci in 2015, the brand has gone stratospheric. Everyone worth their place on the Frow wants to be seen in his bohemian-nerd creations. And thankfully Michele hasn’t left Gucci’s watches out of the creative loop as this moophase shows. Moonphases are certainly the complication du jour, but none of them done with such a sense of fun. There’s the multi-coloured celestial forms, the rainbow-hued disc behind the moon, but all of this levity is grounded by a black dial and strap. It’s fashion-watch design at its very best. 67994 | £1,070
We’d have loved to have been in the meeting when the idea of this watch was floated because on paper it shouldn’t work. There is nothing about the boxy, planeinstrument inspired form of Bell & Ross’s classic BR watches that suggests they would look good in pink and with diamonds. But it is precisely those masculine elements and the way they juxtapose with the feminine colours and precious stones that takes this watch from “hmmmm” to “hell, yes”. It’s a bold move but one that works. 68799 | £5,300

ay the name “Audemars Piguet” and the watch that immediately comes to mind is the Royal Oak. Ever since Gerald Genta, the name behind some of the most iconic designs of the Seventies, including Patek Philippe’s Nautlius and the Bulgari Bulgari, sketched out those octagonal lines, it has been the shape on which the brand has built its subsequent legacy. Given that this is a style synonymous with steel, the subtle play of brushing and polishing, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Audemars Piguet is all about a pared-back simplicity that is only broken up by the gloriously brash colour pops afforded by the more sporty Royal Oak Offshore. You wouldn't have necessarily put it in the same category as Maisons such as Chopard who combine horological know-how with exemplary jewellery prowess. Or at least you wouldn’t have until 2015, when Audemars Piguet confounded everyone at that year’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) and unveiled its Diamond Punk. Inspired by a more decadent brash and disruptive version of the Seventies than the one immortalised in the steel serenity of the Royal Oak, it was an extravagant diamond-encrusted cuff with a watch sequestered beneath a sliding panel. It had 56 facets arranged into pyramids and came in two versions – one entirely encrusted in 8,148 brilliants and the other with onyx panels, taking the diamond total down to just 5,626. According to the brand’s design director Octavio Garcia it was indicative of a “subversive but creative

approach [to watchmaking] that is less patronising to women.” This watch wasn’t just the beginning of an incredible trilogy (which culminated with this year’s Diamond Outrage, that, in its sapphire version, featured 11,043 brilliant cut stones weighing in at a whopping 65.47cts and taking 2,500 hours of manpower to make) but one of the first inklings of the exceptional jewellery skills hidden behind the doors of Le Brassus; the quintessentially Swiss home of Audemars Piguet’s operations since 1875. This trilogy of jewellery watches featured myriad setting techniques usually only seen in haute joaillerie Maisons, however the amazing thing is that these master craftsmen aren’t just brought in for special projects, they are the same people who set bezels and bracelets for the brand’s core collection. And this talent for stone-setting isn’t actually a newly acquired skill for the brand. Although Audemars Piguet has garnered a reputation as more of a masculine brand, its archives tell a slightly different and more feminine story. Housed in the brand’s museum, which is also based in Le Brassus, are brooch watches from the 1900s with delicate enamel flowers; from the 1920s there’s a minute full-pave Art Deco wristwatch, while from 1942 comes a jewellery watch encrusted with diamonds and housing what was then the world’s smallest calibre. Fast forward a few decades and, once the Royal Oak had been adapted for a female audience by Jacqueline Dimier in 1976, the gemsetters were let loose on that too, covering bracelets, bezels and, in some cases, even hands

with precious stones (the latter is rarely done and is a sign of exemplary skill because any unnecessary weight on hands can affect timekeeping). And this year’s crop of new launches was no exception. As well as the Carolina Bucci-inspired Royal Oak Frosted, which offered sparkle without diamonds and required Audemars Piguet’s craftmen to learn a new technique of microhammering, there were quartz models featuring what looked like a snowfall of diamonds across the dial and bracelet with the stone settings themselves made to look like the geometric points of a snowflake as seen under a microscope. It maybe wasn’t as headline grabbing as the Diamond Outrage,

W
ith its riot of diamonds skating across the dial, Chopard’s Happy watches are the epitome of flirtatious, feminine watch design. It is a look that feels so modern, particularly in its Happy Sport iteration, it’s hard to believe that it is now over 40 years old. But what is probably even harder to comprehend it that the original watch wasn’t created for a woman; it was a man’s watch. Back in the 1970s, Chopard’s designer Ronald Kurowski was out walking in the Black Forest. Entranced by the way of thousands of tiny droplets of water spraying from a waterfall caught the sunlight, he hit upon an idea – that diamonds would be able to sparkle more if they were freed from their settings. And so the Happy Diamonds concept was born. The free flow of the diamonds around the dial was achieved by housing each stone in a gold capsule with a beveled base, which allows
them to move in any direction between the two sapphire crystals. Chopard legend has it that when Karin Scheufele, wife of Karl who bought Chopard in 1963, and mother of current copresidents Caroline and Karl-Friedrich, first saw the watch she exclaimed: “These diamonds are happiest when they are free”; a chance statement that gave the collection its name. The original iteration of the watch didn’t have diamonds around the bezel, but it had the cushion-shaped case and quite a few stones dancing around the dial – something that was certainly a bold choice for any man. Despite being a somewhat daring gentleman’s watch, it was a great success and even went on to win the prestigious Golden Rose of Baden-Baden award. These awards were the jewellery industry equivalent of an “Oscar” and were awarded annually by German professionals between 1970 and 1980. Chopard won 15 trophies during this decade, including one for the Happy Diamonds jewellery watch in 1976.

It was Caroline who masterminded the next move for these dancing diamonds. Fascinated by the circus, she created a clown pendant with a tummy full of diamonds and other precious stones. It garnered such attention that what was originally intended as a one-off for Caroline’s own collection became the Happy Diamonds jewellery line and, by 1985, saw Chopard become a jewellery, as well as a watch, manufacturer.

Her instinct proved right and the watch was an overwhelming success thanks to its appeal with young professional women who wanted a more contemporary take on luxury. The BR S Novarosa takes its name from a rare and spectacular astronomical event: the explosion of a star. This occurs when it reaches the latter stages of its life. It starts shining very brightly before exploding in an enormous cloud of dust. The shock waves are big enough to encompass an entire galaxy, which typically contains around 100 billion stars. This extraordinary phenomenon can last several hours. It is estimated that the star releases the same amount of energy produced by the Sun over thousands of years. These supernovae are some of the brightest phenomena of the universe and only two or three occur each century. THESE SUPERNOVAE ARE SOME OF THE BRIGHTEST PHENOMENA OF THE UNIVERSE For this new family of contemporary watches, Bell & Ross chose the evocative name Novarosa. This neologism can be unpacked as follows: First comes the prefix “nova”, taken from supernova. Next, the delicate suffix “rosa”, a tribute to the most feminine colour. No matter the tone of pink — cotton candy, pale, dusky or fuchsia — it is synonymous of seduction and romance. It is also the colour of ingenuity, sensitivity, candor and purity. Finally, the expression “la vie en rose”, life through rose-tinted spectacles, evokes an existence filled with happiness and pleasure. Bell & Ross has chosen this colour for the dials of the three watches,. Lastly, “rosa” recalls the stardust caused by the explosion of a supernova, which often takes on this hue. This mysterious cloud sometimes regenerates and triggers the formation of a new star. These three heavenly watches house a quartz movement displaying hours, minutes, seconds and the date. These watches are true pieces of jewellery and radiate luxurious refinement. The three models feature incredibly stylish hands. For the very first time at Bell & Ross, the Novarosa collection is paired with a Milanese mesh strap. This intriguing name refers to the refined technique of interwoven steel strands. And it was studying for a degree in Fashion Design and Production that brought her ever closer to her Scottish roots. At just 17-years-old Siobhan began designing contemporary pieces with a tartan twist, turning traditional Scottish dress on its head. Such was her determination to push the boundaries, she soon found herself taking on an internship at respected Glenisla Kilts honing the art of designing and creating quality, traditional kilts. Siobhan continued: “My friends and family have always been incredibly supportive. “Making the decision to leave home and go to Glasgow was a big deal. It was really surreal.” However, despite her ever growing global fan base Siobhan has no plans on changing her made in Scotland approach. “I want to really get across the made in Scotland ethos and that is such a core aspect of the brand to support craftsmanship in Scotland and manufacturers and fabric “The authenticity and quality of it is on another level and that’s something I want to retain.” For more, visit www.siobhanmackenzie.com

INNOVATION and
RECREATION AT CHAMPAGNE LAURENT-PERRIER Although dating back over 200 years to 1812, the story of Champagne Laurent-Perrier is really one of innovative, modern renaissance.
T
he largest family-owned Champagne House was first established in 1812 by André Michel Pierlot, a cooper (barrelmaker) by profession who passed the House on to his Cellar Master Eugène Laurent when he died. The house took the name Veuve Laurent-Perrier when Mathilde Emilie Perrier, Eugène’s wife, combined the two family names after he sadly passed away in 1887 leaving the running of the House to her, which she took to with no hesitation. Laurent-Perrier was able to thrive under Mathilde Emilie and later her daughter Eugénie but during the economic crisis in 1939, times became tough and the House was sold to a lady by the name of Marie-Louise de Nonancourt. Marie-Louise purchased the house along with two other people using all of her savings and against the advice of her family. With another war looming, many of her contemporaries saw this move as complete madness but for the WWI widow and mother of four it was a way of creating an independent inheritance for her sons. While they fought as part of the French resistance, she continued to run the business for a decade during the Second World War, preserving their precious bottles by walling them up deep in their

cellars. When the war ended, it was these bottles that enabled the House to stay afloat and her son, Bernard to eventually take over from her in 1948, which is when the brand really started to take shape. Courageous and entrepreneurial, Bernard de Nonancourt went from bravely fighting in the Second World War, at one point blowing open the armoured doors of the Hitler's cellar at the Eagle's Nest, to returning home and starting an apprenticeship to learn every aspect of champagne-making. At just 28 years old he became Chairman and CEO plus, in his words, 'cellar master, delivery driver and general hand'. Bernard was unafraid to challenge convention had a modern vision of a champagne style lighter on the palate that could be enjoyed any time. He brought innovation and a pioneering spirit to the House, and so the Laurent-Perrier style of elegance and freshness was born. Over his 60 years in charge, Bernard's innovative spirit led him to create many of the classic cuvées for which the house has become known. In 1959, the House introduced the multivintage prestige cuvée Grand Siècle by LaurentPerrier and in 1968 it pioneered the rosé brut category with the launch of Laurent-Perrier

Cuvée Rosé. This iconic rosé is now undoubtedly the benchmark for all non-vintage rosé champagnes. In 1981, Laurent-Perrier was the first House to reintroduce the concept of brut nature – a crisp champagne which unusually has no sugar added during the wine-making process. This cuvee is called Laurent-Perrier Ultra Brut.
LA CUVÉE HAS DELICATE AROMAS OF CITRUS FRUITS, UNDERPINNED BY HINTS OF WHITE FLOWERS. Today, the house is overseen by his two daughters, Stéphanie and Alexandra, who have continued his legacy of innovation with the launch of the new non-vintage champagne, 'La Cuvée'. Thanks to the acquisition of several highly prized Chardonnay vineyards in the Côte de Blancs, this brand new cuvée enjoys an increased amount of precious Chardonnay which, through the Cellar Master’s expertise in the art of blending, helps this champagne stay fresh and structured, an evolution of the signature House style of lightness, freshness and elegance, La Cuvée has delicate aromas of citrus fruits, underpinned by hints of white flowers. If you are entertaining at home or out for dinner with friends or family, Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée is fantastic as an apéritif or a beautiful accompaniment to fine fish or with pork and poultry dishes.

You started as a print journalist aged just 15 and have covered some of the nation’s biggest news stories – most notably the Lockerbie Trial – what inspired the move to sports journalism? My father was a sports journalist and I was the annoying child who followed him around because I could get off school to go along to games. Rugby in particular fascinated me and it was at a young age I decided that if you could go watch top class sport and be paid for it then that was pretty good to me. From there I set about getting as much experience as I could and when the Sunday Herald was being set up I was offered a job as chief rugby correspondent – I was only 20. However, I was also offered the chance of
ROX MAGAZINE
a graduate position at Border Television in Carlisle where the money was less than half. At the time I figured that I knew a lot of rugby journalists in Scotland through going to games and thought a lot of older reporters weren’t going to take direction from a young girl so I decided to go for something different. I never went into this wanting to be on camera though, I only wanted to write for television. Just by chance, as these things always happen, I did a screen text and got GMTV local new morning spot and it started from there. Your job is varied to say the least – covering F1, Six Nations Rugby and Wimbledon you’re always on the go – what is an average day like for you? Chaos but that’s the beauty, there’s no such thing as an average day. F1 is a little different as you can gauge how your day will go. For example on a Thursday it’ll have interviews with 10 minute gaps. While the Friday, Saturday and Sunday are governed by the F1 sessions and the interviews around that. Wimbledon is total chaos as it is 14 days in a row and you’re exhausted by the end but it’s amazing. I’d say that Wimbledon and the Six Nations are two of my favourites out of the year. Tournaments are so intense in a short period of time and the momentum builds quickly. It’s totally different to F1 which starts in March and finishes in November so it’s a very different situation. So whilst there are big moments in it and often quite controversial moments it can be quite protracted. Anything which is over two weeks or two months and you can see how a situation builds and consumes a nation and I love that. You’ve been following the world of F1 for years – what is it like following such a high power sport? F1 is the one thing that everyone asks me about. There’s mystique surrounding F1 that’s like nothing else. You find yourself in a situation that you could never imagine – I met with Mariah Carey recently who was concerned about my lack of sun screen. It’s a very strange world. I suppose the best way to describe it is like a soap opera - it’s an engineering degree, it’s sportsmanship, there’s money and danger and politics. F1 is the perfect drama that you’d watch on TV and think that’s too farfetched but it’s the
PORTRAIT
world. The stakes are so high and I think that’s what fascinates people. F1 is often considered the epitome of glamour, is it everything people would expect? It can be what people expect but it varies depending on where you are in the world. Covering a race in China in the rain isn’t as glamorous as being in sun drenched Monaco, but that’s natural with 21 races on the calendar. Ultimately, however, the DNA of the events remain the same. You get to travel the world but need to make a point of making the most of the places you’re visiting which can be tricky when you’re working. For me I don’t care if it’s glamorous or not, it’s not why I do the job but there are moments when you see sparkle and some of the people you’re surrounded by and think wow this is incredible. What is your relationship with the drivers like? I’ve got to know a lot of them over the years but knew some beforehand. Take Lewis Hamilton, for example, we shared a hire car when he was doing the Feeder Series so I’ve known him for over 10 years. I suppose it’s only natural you’re going to build up relationships. I don’t set out to become friends with any sportsman, if it happens then it’s a bonus, but that’s not why I’m there. And even the ones you are friendly with it’s different in the moment when you’re working. I’ve had quite heated moments with people and afterwards gone to seek them out to explain my thinking behind it and they’ll tell me exactly why they’re not happy with a question, but as long as we retain that level of respect it’s absolutely fine. Do you have a favourite race and why? I always enjoy the Belgian GP and the Italian GP. Most people come back after a summer break so it starts off that huge run into the end of the season. People might think it’s a long way to go but we do nine long hauls in 11 weeks so for me that signals the start of the end. It’s like the second half of a film when it’s building up to a climax – it’s exactly the same in F1 and also they are classic circuits, close to home in Europe with a huge racing DNA. You’ve got a massive queue to get in and the fans are so passionate – it’s what F1 should

I’ll never forget when Lewis Hamilton won his first world championship in Brazil. Felipe Massa thought he had won and had for about five seconds before being told that he hadn’t – he was devastated but to be there for such a huge moment in sport was incredible. Looking to the future, what’s next for you? To be honest I have no idea because I don’t know what I’m doing on a week to week basis. The things that come in are so interesting, there are a lot of nos but it’s exciting. I’ve never presented a Rugby World Cup but I’d like to do that in 2019. When you look back at the start of your career, did you ever think that you’d end up where you are today? Yes I did. It sounds arrogant but I always knew what I wanted to do - I’m ambitious. Also I'm never governed by money so whilst I’ve been ambitious I’ve always been true to myself. I’ve left big jobs because I didn’t think I was doing myself justice, you know yourself when something is right or wrong. I didn’t know my path would lead me to television but I knew I wanted to go to some of the best sporting events in the world and that’s what I’m doing.
We often see you wearing ROX jewellery at some of the most prestigious sporting events across the world, what is you like most about the brand? I love that it’s a good Scottish company. I love the fact that every design is different but it’s still classic yet modern. I know it’s quite recognisable when I wear it on TV. People are often surprised when I tell them about ROX and they find out more about the brand. It’s accessible it would be disingenuous to wear jewellery I couldn’t afford. It also manages to fit the mood. Essentially I can’t wear lots of jewellery in the pit lane, I have to be practical but I still want to be feminine so ROX is perfect as there’s such a variety of choice. It’s also perfect as it means I can do a For more about Lee visit www.leemckenzie.tv

A story about friendship and music Swing Time tells a painstakingly human story. Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2017 Swing Time is about two young girls who dream of becoming dancers. However, with only one having the talent to actually succeed the story follows the journey of a complicated childhood friendship that shapes the personalities and futures of each girl involved. It is a story about the turn and dip and sway of lives in endless, perpetual motion; an exuberant dance to the music of time.
It wouldn’t be December without a trip to see a classic ballet show. This year twinkletoed dancers from the Scottish Ballet will take to the Edinburgh Festival Theatre stage in their performance of The Nutcracker created by the company’s founder Peter Darrell. It has been 40 years since the magical performance was first unveiled, taking the audience on an enchanting journey. A perfect way to get into the festive spirit with friends and family. Visit www.edtheatres.com/nutcracker for more.
Remember Irish band The Script? With hits like the Man Who Can’t Be Moved and Hall of Fame everyone was swooning over lead singer Danny O'Donoghue and his dulcet tones. They may have seemed a little quiet of late, however, that’s because the band has been working on their much anticipated next album with their fifth offering finally ready for release. What is an average day like for you living and working in Glasgow? I’m an early bird as I have kids, so I’m up at about 6am when I try to get a window of quiet time to get organised. I live in Helensbrugh, so by the time I leave I’m usually in town for around 9.30am. There’s a lot of manoeuvring when it comes to hospitality, so organisation is key. Whether it’s wandering down the famous Buchanan Street to check out the shops or visiting Mitchell Lane with its secret bars and The Lighthouse (with the best views of the city). Miller Street is also definitely a hidden gem. I think 20 years ago it used to have a real scene, which disappeared. But, it’s making a real come back!
