EDITOR’S WELCOME
editor’s WELCOME T o paraphrase a male columnist who obviously thought they were being hilarious: “Women are fashionable right now”. Whether it is Dior’s T-shirts proclaiming Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s truth that “We Should All be Feminists Now” or Hollywood’s finest turning the red carpet into a protest site or the numerous opinion pieces trying to work out where we are now after claims that the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Donald Trump have made many of us say #MeToo – women and everything it means to bear that moniker are in the spotlight in an unprecedented way. Which is why, of all the themes we could have gone with for this latest edition of ROX Woman, it had to be a celebration of the female in all her forms. We have brilliant businesswomen in the shape of Chloe Milligan who offers an Insiders Guide to Glasgow. There’s the fearless fighter pilot and Bremont ambassador Carey Lohrenz who was the first-ever woman to fly an
F-14 Tomcat, which basically means if they ever remade Top Gun Kelly McGuinness would be flying the planes not cooking Tom Cruise dinner. When it comes to creating beautiful jewellery that is the perfect fit for a queen[consort]-in-waiting (Kate Middleton is a huge fan) Catherine Zoraida shows us how, while Carolina Bucci’s collaboration with Audemars Piguet proves that allegedly telling a male CEO he knows nothing about women’s watches can sometimes be a job clincher. However, the pages aren’t just littered with the product of an XY chromosomal pairing, there are some XXs in there too – the likes of Alessandro Michele and Michael Kors, who know what women want and how to design for them. But essentially this ROX Woman is a celebration of every facet of femininity from the sharp suited to the diamond-sparkling and everything else in between. Enjoy.

What's the best tip you can give a man buying an engagement ring? Talk to ROX! Seriously though, if you are planning to surprise her then get as much advice as possible. Mentally take notes of what she likes wearing jewellery-wise – does she just wear rose gold or is there some yellow in there; is her style classic or more modern – talk to her friends, her mum, anyone who knows her well and whose opinion you trust. Then, when you have as much information as you can amass, go to ROX and sit down with their team. You’ll come away with something perfect.

HOT RIGHT NOW From bold rings to contrasting layers, there’s plenty of ways to inject some sunshine into your wardrobe this summer. Words by Laura McCreddie-Doak.
69151 | £1,695
GO FOR THE DROP From Chanel to Isabel Marant, earrings that skimmed the shoulders, or even surpassed them, were the ear candy du jour. Earrings have not been this big, both literally and figuratively, since the 1980s, however, rather than opting for plastic and primary colours, this time around the trend feels informed by the decadence of the Art Deco or Belle Époque eras. Go all out in white gold and diamonds for serious opulence and leave your shoulders bare.
69158 | £1,095
ELONGATED ELEGANCE Summer means going a little bare and this season, if the Hollywood awards red carpets are anything to go by, that means wearing your tuxedo jacket with nothing underneath. Which is why it makes sense to use your revealed décolleté as a canvas against which to showcase the latest range of drop pendants. These elongated forms add a touch of drama to a more masculine silhouette and are the perfect way to flip the dinner suit from drab to daring.

MIXED METALS Unless you're the Queen matchy-matchy is not the best look. And for 2018 that also applies to your engagement and wedding rings. In past years, the look has been rings that are either the same metal or even ones that will eventually be interlinked to become one single piece, however, for SS18 it’s all about the contrast. It’s so easy to get fixated on the type of ring that is going to go on your left hand – the third finger of the left hand to be precise – that your right hand, and all its adornment possibilities get put to one side. Which is ridiculous because this where you can have some fun. Right hand rings are the perfect way to create a truly statement look, leaving a twinkle in your eye as well as on your finger. When there’s not the obligation to let that diamond shine, there’s no rules, just the ones you make for yourself.

DELICATE SPARKLE There was no escaping the influx of pretty pieces when it came to Fashion Week in London. While designers in Paris went all out with some spectacular showstoppers, a little closer to home there was a real spotlight on delicate sparkle. Teamed with wafting New Romantic style blouses and loose-fit shorts, shimmering diamonds have the ability to take your style from every day glamour to evening chic.
REGAL WRISTWEAR Game of Thrones might have been off our screens for a little while but its sartorial influence is still being felt. Gucci populated its operating theatre at Milan Fashion Week with doublets and baby dragons, while Alexander McQueen showed gowns that Cersei Lannister would raze the Seven Kingdoms to own. Jewellery-wise this means the return of the torque bangle and it is so adaptable. It is a style that is classic enough not to be a summer fling but has that air of charming decadence about it that makes it the ideal accompaniment to any style this season.

on’t start looking at Catherine Zoraida’s jewellery without knowing you have money to spend. There is something about her designs, which Catherine herself describes as “playful yet elegant”, that is irresistible. There are long strands of fern in gold plate to dangle from your ears; fuschia-like flowers to drape nonchalantly around the neck and seahorses, honey bees and dragonflies for your fingers. It’s as if the mind behind them lives in the Shell Cottage of Harry Potter fame surrounded by the wilds of both earth and sea.

Which isn’t too far from the truth. “I live in a beautiful part of the Cotswolds, so I only have to go for a walk along the valley to find a huge source of inspiration,” she says. “However, my Colombian blood pines for warmer climates, and my travels are often dictated by thoughts for a new collection.” To say Catherine’s youth was peripatetic would be to put it mildly. She was born in Columbia but from there went to Washington, then Scotland, London finally settling in the Cotswolds. Countries might not have been permanents

in Catherine’s youth but art was. “I have always been artistic,” she says. “My mother always encouraged me to develop my drawing skills and during the summers we would attend drawing summer school together. I didn’t really know where it would take me but I think learning to draw and paint definitely led me down the path to jewellery. It helps you appreciate form and have an interest in how things are made. I did a foundation course at Edinburgh University and decided in my second year I would specialise in jewellery and silversmithing. I could
“UP UNTIL NOW I HAVE MOSTLY FOCUSED ON METALS BUT THIS YEAR I AM PLANNING MORE COLOURFUL DESIGNS WORKING WITH MORE STONES AND GEMS,” have become a sculptor but it was the precious materials and sparkling jewels that appealed to me side and finally won me over.” It wasn’t just that Catherine was drawn to jewellery, she was also good at it, winning a Goldmsith’s Award for Design in her final year at Edinburgh for a statement necklace. “It had a beautiful large beetle that I chased out of silver as the clasp, which sat at the front. Then around the necklace was a handmade chain (handmade chains are a real labour of love), almost like stepping stones, that had tiny little trails of granulation, which the beetle left as he went on his journey.” This would have been enough of a calling card but Catherine also had another ace in her deck in the form of Graham Stewart. Stewart is a designer and gold- and silversmith who has had a workshop in Dunblane since the 1970s. Specialising in silver sculptures and fine hand-cut engraving, he has contributed pieces to the private and public collections of among others

HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Princess Royal and Victoria & Albert Museum (Rabinovitch Collection), London and the Scottish Parliament. Catherine grew up in Dunblane and spent the summer holidays acting as an ersatz apprentice to Stewart “learning how to chase and form metal into beautiful shapes,” as she explains. Then, on graduation, Catherine was chosen by Theo Fennell to work in his design studio alongside his team of master craftsmen; another move that cemented her reputation as a serious talent. However, it was to be another Catherine that was to put her on the front pages. Literally. “I had an extremely exciting call from Buckingham Palace requesting a few pieces. It was rather strange, as although I delivered the parcel I did not think anything would come of it,” she says. “I had a couple of jewellery requests from famous people in the past but nothing had come of them. It was a couple of weeks later when I had almost forgotten about sending the parcel that it all went crazy, Catherine [the Duchess of Cambridge] wore my Double Leaf earrings and “Spread Your Wings” bracelet for dinner with the King of Malaysia and the pictures were on the front page of newspapers all over the world. It was a hugely exciting time and an amazing boost for me.” Since then her jewellery has been seen on the likes of Beyoncé and Rita Ora, while the Duchess of Cambridge has been snapped out and about in her Fern hoop earrings as well as wearing the Double Leaf style while on royal duty in Australia. Despite being a relative newcomer to the industry Catherine feels she has seen a real shift in the gender balance. “When I first started in the industry it was a very male-oriented place and I remember feeling very aware of how much female jewellery www.rox.co.uk

was being designed by men,” she says. “However, I feel this has changed a great deal in recent years with many more female designers pushing boundaries and becoming the top of their game. A greater variety of more affordable jewellery has also meant more women are buying jewellery for themselves, accessorising everyday outfits with pieces that are fun but also make them feel special.” As for the pieces Catherine feels are special, there’s Orchid ring that was cast from a flower Catherine had in her hair on her wedding day. “It’s a bold piece that always gets a lot of attention. I also love the Hummingbird pendant as it reminds me of Brazil (a place I love very much). And the double leaf earrings as they were one of my first designs and one of the first pieces the Duchess of Cambridge wore.” Although Catherine’s designs have that sense about them of being heirlooms of the future, the woman herself isn’t one for staying still. She has just returned from India where she was doing research for her next collection and she has also just launched a new Celestial collection with awardwinning jeweller ROX following the triumphant ROX x Catherine Zoraida Zodiac range last year. “Up until now I have mostly focused on metals but this year I am planning more colourful designs working with more stones and gems,” she says. The next collection may signal a bit of a departure but one thing’s for certain, whatever Catherine designs will be just the sort of piece you didn’t know you needed until you set eyes on it. We’re sure your bank manager will understand.

MEN WHO KNOW WHAT WOMEN WANT TOO While it is fair to say that women have a very personal insight into what their fellow females want from their jewellery, there are men out there who have an almost uncanny idea of what women want.
ALESSANDRO MICHELE Gucci used to be synonymous with sex. Under the tenure of Tom Ford, and then Frida Gianinni, it became known for taking a more risqué position on women’s fashion. Don’t forget this was a brand that got itself in hot water thanks to an advert featuring a woman’s pubic hair shaved into its iconic G logo. Prada it isn’t. But the shock tactics got tired and Gucci took on the air of an embarrassing uncle making lewd comments at a family party. Enter Alessandro Michele in 2015. This little-known name was announced as the brand's creative director after Giannini's sudden departure and a different type of Gucci began to emerge. Gone was the 90s seductress and in her place was the velvet-suited, bespectacled chic geek. 62
www.rox.co.uk
Sexy was out and sensuality was in. There were questions as to whether Michele would be working the same magic on the brand’s jewellery and watches. The answer, which was given at the fair year later, was a resounding yes. Gone were the bamboo bezels and horsebit bracelets and in their places, as illustrated in the fabulous Le Marché des Merveilles were bees, hearts, stars, snakes and lions. The Gucci colours of red and white were there but coated in plexiglass, on top of which was a see-through quartz dial. All of this was accompanied by a campaign that had all the dreamy references of the ready-to-wear collections; those same beautifully ethereal girls who looked as though they had wandered in from a 1920s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream out on by a group of bohemians at a house

party. Its jewellery was no different. The superlative craftsmanship and stone-setting was still in evidence but it was deployed making lions’ heads and skulls rather than petals and bows. There is a sense that Michele is applying the same magpie irreverence to the watches and jewellery that he does to Gucci’s clothing. Everything is inspiration and there to be absorbed and refracted through his particular prism. His work takes in everything from post-modernist philosophy to Italian Renaissance art and Victorian fashion. Michele even collaborated with graffiti artist GucciGhost (real name Trevor Andrew) after seeing how he had been appropriating the Gucci logo, turning the iconic double Gs into the eyes of a cartoon spectre that can now be seen watch dials and as charms. His insistence on creating something beautiful rather than designing specifically for men or women might go some way to explaining why he has created pieces that seem to capture the female imagination. Because he doesn’t see them as other but merely another part of his own being. MICHAEL KORS It isn’t an exaggeration to say that Michael Kors put a watch back on women’s wrists. Before he came along with his wonderfully brash oversized chronographs, women just weren’t interested; they had their smart phones for telling the time and wrist real estate was occupied by bracelets not watches. When Kors started out – he got his break in 1981 after graduation from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology designing a line for elite Manhattan boutique Lothar’s before going it alone in 1983 – his ready-towear and accessories were designed in conjunction with each other. Despite this ethos, it wasn’t until 2004 that watches were added into the mix. Although there were time-only options, it was the chronographs that captured the fashion zeitgeist. For starters making a woman’s watch a chronograph was, and still is, a rare thing. Generally speaking in both the
THE JEWELLERY EDIT
luxury and fashion arena, chronographs are put in men’s sports watches. We’re talking Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak, Bell & Ross’s aviation-inspired instruments and Hublot’s Big Bang; it is still not really considered to be a woman’s complication. Michael Kors changed all that. These watches tapped into the boyfriend trend – at cases of around 39mm they were definitely on the larger side – but they did it in a totally feminine way. Gold-plate, usually rose, was the overriding colour of the watches and there was more often than not some Swarovski crystal somewhere. And they were unapologetically “fashion”. The idea of the fashion watch had previously had bad press; the underlying connotation being that these were cheaply made items that allowed people access to a brand they wouldn't have otherwise. Kors’s watches were well made – some of the signatures include adjusto-matic bracaelet closure and etched case backs – but they were informed by the seasonal vagaries of trends. They were also keenly priced, which encouraged women to think of their watches in the same way they would their shoes or bags – as something that should be changed according to your outfit not just worn all the time regardless of the rest of your look. Since then the collection has branched out to include more evening styles that owe a debt to the likes of Chopard and Baume & Mercier as well as more delicate time-only designs. It has even branched into the smartwatch sector with a style that combines a watch with technology in a way that brilliantly retains the brand’s fashion sensibilities. Michael Kors is now one of the most well-known watch brands in the world, regularly ranking with such horological heavyweights as Rolex and Omega in popularity. Kors may have put watches back on women’s wrist but his continued spirit of innovation has ensured that something bearing his name on the dial has continued to remain there.

THE SCIENCE OF
Unlocking the true beauty of a diamond, Crisscut® engagement rings are increasing in popularity for those looking for a ring as unique as their love story. Laura McCreddie- Doak discovers more about the unique cut.

here really is nothing more captivating than seeing light ripple through a diamond; the interplay of facets making this inanimate object seem momentarily alive. Diamond aficionado Avraham Siman Tov and former electrical engineer turned jewellery designer Christopher Slowinski were so taken with the subtle ways in which you can make these precious stones sparkle that they set out on a mission to discover if they could devise a new cut to make things even brighter.
64
www.rox.co.uk
“I have always been intrigued with taking something established and making it even more beautiful,” Slowinski says and why he believes “the technological side of jewellery making has always been as important as the aesthetic.” Deploying all the most modern technology at their disposal, Siman Tov and Slowinski jointly came up with the one-of-a-kind Crisscut® diamond in 1996; a patented, specialised way of cutting the stone in order to maximise the stone’s brilliance. The key to this is the “crisscrossed” facets that allow more light to

be reflected, which makes the diamond appear whiter and brighter. The starting point for this variant is the emerald cut. The emerald cut is defined by its elongated octagon shape. It is the cut most likely to show its flaws and, because it is step cut, rather than brilliant cut like most diamonds, it doesn’t sparkle as much. What you get with a step cut is flashes of light, known as the “hall of mirrors” effect, rather than a rippling shimmer.

above, because it’s not hiding all its weight below the setting, which is often the case with other cuts. All of which seems even more incredible when you consider that this all came about by mistake. “Crisscut® was a happy accident. I was faceting a diamond and slipped at the cutting wheel,” Slowinski told US website Chic Metropolitan. “What I saw intrigued me, it was interesting and different. I decided to continue the pattern the same way and Crisscut® was born. Years of trial and error followed until the angles were perfected to maximise the brilliance of the stone.” Siman Tov and Slowinski may have been awarded their patent for the diamond in the 1990s but it has taken until now for these stones to be available in the UK thanks to ROX, which is the only British jeweller to work with the diamonds. The result is a collection of rings, along with necklaces and bracelets, which showcase this unusual cut in all its fiery beauty. Given that it is so unique, it is the perfect choice for a proposal. As Slowinski himself says: “After all, [if] she is the one your heart chose, [and] she is the one, doesn’t she deserve a stone as unique as she is?”
With that in mind, the pair decided to take this cut and up the number of facets and then, instead of just leaving them as steps, they made them crisscross each other. They achieved this by applying triangular facets to the steps in the pavilion of the diamond – the lower pointed portion of the stone. These added facets cause the light bounce between them meaning it stays in the stone longer before leaving, which gives it its extra sparkle. The diamond duo also decided to make the stone shallower that regular emerald cut diamonds. This means that if compared to another cut of the same Crisscut is available online and in weight, the Crisscut® stone will have a ROX Argyll Arcade, Edinburgh, Leeds larger surface area, when viewed from and Newcastle boutiques.

hen Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped into Kensington Palace gardens and allowed the amassed reporters and global public a glimpse of the ring it was inevitable that it was going to change engagement jewellery trends for the year ahead. This time it wasn’t an oval sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds. Always one to do things a little differently from his brother, Prince Harry had instead designed the ring himself. At its centre was an estimated three carat diamond from Botswana, a country that holds special significance for the couple, flanked by two diamonds from Princess Diana’s personal collection. The trio of stones were set on a yellow gold band, which means that this variation of the precious metal will be receiving a boost this year, having taken a back seat to rose recently. Three-stone engagement rings are nothing new. Many couples choose them because the trio of stones can be seen to represent “past, present and future” or “love, friendship and fidelity”. Given his comments in the interview the couple gave following their announcement, the latter might have more meaning to the couple. “[The side diamonds] are from my mother’s jewellery collection to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together,” said Prince Harry in the interview. Although Prince Harry opted for a cushion cut diamond flanked by two round stones, that isn’t the only option when it comes to trilogy rings. For a more Art Deco look, you can have all three stones in an emerald cut or opt for a princess cut, you can even have the central stone as a sapphire. It all depends on your personality because when it comes to an engagement ring, the stones have a lot to say about you. Speaking to Vogue.com, Olivia Landau, a New York–based private jeweller said: “A diamond is very personal and very pricey. It’s important to ensure that you fall in love with the stone when your significant other makes the big purchase. Trying different styles is a great was to get a sense of what you like on your hand – there are no wrong choices in choosing a diamond cut but knowing your personal style and what you’ll feel most comfortable wearing can help your soon-to-be fiancé make the right decision.” According to Landau, a round cut suits someone with more traditional tastes, emerald is for those who favour “classic with a twist”. Those who favour cushion cut stones have a feminine yet trendy style, which oval lovers are usually

ahead of the trends. While you might not want to distil your entire personality into your engagement ring, it is worth taking advice from diamond experts to help decide what style suits you. Engagement rings are ROX’s speciality – they not only know their diamonds, which are sourced from around the world, but thanks to the uniquely personal service you get at every store, they also know people and will be able to select the ring that is the perfect fit both with your style and your personality. As well as sparking a trend for trilogy rings, Prince Harry will no doubt have encouraged a few grooms-to-be to go bespoke. And that’s definitely something to consider talking to ROX about. Take a seat in the Thrill Room and have the team talk you through everything from diamonds and design options to the metal that best suits your skin tone. These days, however, it doesn’t stop with the engagement ring and wedding band, more and more brides are investing in suites of jewellery for the big day. According to Brides magazine, chokers, such the stunning double strand necklace from ROX’s new season diamond collection are big news, which act as a perfect foil to a more simple style of dress. Accessorise with delicate drop earrings so as not to distract. However, as with everything in fashion, just because one thing is a trend doesn’t mean its opposite isn’t also doing the rounds, which is why in complete contrast, statement necklaces are also big for 2018. The British jeweller has a fabulous selection of diamond necklaces that will certainly be visible from the back of your wedding venue. All of the brand's exquisite diamond piece are made in Britain by some of the most skilled craftsman in the trade and, because diamonds are its speciality, you won’t find better quality stones anywhere else. And diamond jewellery isn’t just for the bride – ROX’s delicate diamond pendants make the perfect “thank you” gifts for your bridesmaids, mother-in-law or just yourself for planning such a fabulous day. As for what Ms Markle will be wearing on the big day? Time will tell, however, there's no denying that she'll bring her own distinctive style to the wedding of the year. AUDEMARS PIGUET
CHOPARD
ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE
HAPPY SPORT
BIG BANG DIAMOND WATCH
Twenty-five years ago Audemars Piguet decided its flagship watch, the Royal Oak, needed a bit of a reboot to appeal to a younger, more sporty watch connoisseur. The upshot was the Offshore, a muscular 42mm hunk of a watch that was nicknamed “The Beast”. Fast forward to 2018 and Audemars Piguet realised that women want something sporty too, so it has dropped the case to 37mm and added some diamonds. It’s the perfect poolside to beach bar watch, given a little extra edge thanks to the gorgeous dark-blue rubber strap and iconic steel case. 69689 | £24,100
If the name doesn’t give you a clue, all you have to do is look at the diamonds joyfully skittering across the dial to realise how aptly named this collection of watches and jewellery is. This version is a particularly decadent form of happy-making – there’s not just diamonds in the case but around the bezel too – 38 to be exact – and it has a very fashionable bicolour 18ct rosegold-and-steel strap. It is a style that mixes sophistication with a touch of levity. Perfect for wearing when you need a pick-me-up. 67626 | £16,600
Despite a smattering of reds, fluoro yellows and greens, the trend for dark blue watches won’t be going away anytime soon and this Hublot one of the best of its kind. The deep-sea shade of its dial is given an extra aquatic shimmer thanks to the sunray finish and the diamonds on the bezel. The contrasting black ceramic case adds a touch of after-dark menace to a traditionally daytime piece, while the 100m water resistance and rubber-and-alligator strap means you won’t have to leave it with your clothes should you decide to indulge in some after-dinner swimming. 69718 | £9,800

BELL & ROSS BRS DIAMOND EAGLE Just as celestial charm is enjoying a moment in the spotlight in the world of jewellery, so too is haute horlogerie. Bell & Ross is a brand known for creating feminine timepieces that master the art of being both practical and stylish and this Diamond Eagle is a glistening example of just that. The 39mm midnight blue model, crafted in stainless steel, features seven shimmering diamonds weighing a total of 0.99cts in the shape of the Aquila constellation on the dial. Perfect for the star gazers out there. 66286 | £4,990
TAG HEUER

RAYMOND WEIL
CARRERA
GUCCI G-FRAME
TANGO
This is the ultimate in summer watch style. Cool steel, even cooler ice and the hazy shimmer of a mother-of-pearl dial. TAG Heuer has managed to successfully femininise the Carrera – a timepiece conceived in 1962 as the definitive automotive chronograph by great grandson of the founder Jack Heuer – without losing the clean lines and slightly retro style that made the original famous. It’s such a classic but one that will never go out of fashion, so you can continue to wear it when the leaves start to fall. 69956 | £3,850
Plenty of brands have been flirting with Art Deco-style elegance but no one is doing it better than Alessandro Michele’s Gucci, as this watch proves. It looks like one of those expensive heirloom pieces that only those of us with blue-tinged blood could ever hope to find while rifling through Grandmamá’s jewellery box. For the rest of us there is this timepiece, which is a daring contrast of the old – the angular Deco case and dial – and the new – the strap is PVD not leather. It’s very typical of the new iteration of Gucci and very, very now. 67991 | £730
There’s no escaping the charm of a two-tone watch. Once a staple of any watch collection, a two-tone watch was considered the epitome of cool throughout the Eighties. However, the classic style is enjoying a renaissance at the moment proving that the design is more than just heritage chic. The Raymond Weil Tango Diamond Dot is a new addition to the Tango family with the stainless steel and 18ct rose gold bracelet acting as the perfect colour combination to bring out your golden summer glow. 68046 | £1,095

GETTING ITS FEMALE BACK
Audemars Piguet used to be all about the boys, but that looks set to change as Laura McCreddie-Doak finds out
A
pparently Audemars Piguet’s collaboration with renowned Florentine jeweller Carolina Bucci got off to a rather combative start. She allegedly told François-Henry Bennahmias, the brand’s CEO, that “I love Audemars Piguet, I wear Audemars Piguet but you don’t have a clue about women’s watches”. While there is some truth there, given that, since the 1972 the brand’s output has been focussed almost exclusively around the iconic octagonal form of the Royal Oak, it wasn’t always the case. Back in the 1890s – Audemars Piguet was founded in 1875 – the brand was known for its women’s pendant watches; it was the ability to adapt these small calibres that kickstarted the wristwatch making side of the business. Given the size of these watches, such as the minute repeater it made in 1891 that was the smallest in the world
for three decades, it is unlikely they would have been worn by men. Until 1972, much of Audemars Piguet’s output was occupied with musical calibres for both men and women; skeletonisation and teaming minute repeaters with other complications such as chronographs, perpetual calendars and jumping hours. Then the Royal Oak was launched and you couldn’t see the watches for octagonal-shaped portalholes. The only women’s watch to make it into the modern iteration of the brand is the Millenary. The original design for this unusual ovoid case comes from 1951, however, this shape of case proved unpopular so it was phased out and reintroduced in 1995 and named Millenary as a nod to the impending third millennium. It seems as though Audemars Piguet were still ahead of the curve even in the ’90s when it came to ovoid cases because it wasn’t the success story the brand hoped, however, as Audemars Piguet historian Micheal www.rox.co.uk

Friedman explained back in 2016 at the launch of the newly revamped Millenary, maybe that was down to the watch press not being ready for timepieces aimed exclusively at the fairer sex. “The history of women's watches has been one of the most neglected stories. Audemars Piguet is starting to tell how beautiful, technical and unique this history is, as it relates to the past, present and future of time-keeping,” he explained to Luxos magazine in 2015. “I think, during the second half of the 20th century, the watch press put focus on men's watches while the jewellery press to women's jewellery. Therefore, women's watches gradually faded out of the picture as they were not the focal point of publications at that time.” This might have been a blessing when it came to the Millenary. Unbothered by the glaring scrutiny of the press Audmars Piguet were allowed
women’s watch portfolio – it had kicked around the idea of an entirely new collection but that wasn’t sticking, so it set about collaborating with Bucci on a treatment of the women’s Royal Oak that would commemorate its 40th anniversary. Bucci wanted to use her signature Florentine technique where metal is “hammered” with a hand-manipulated drill then polish to create an illusion of being stone set. But getting it to work on a watch bracelet wasn’t easy. “It was a strong learning curve to adapt the Florentine technique, which is more of a jewellery finish, to watchmaking,” says Chadi Gruber, Audemars Piguet’s product director. “Achieving such a shimmering look while managing to retain the design codes of the Royal Oak and the velvet touch of its bracelet was no mean feat. Carolina Bucci’s workshops and Audemars Piguet’s manufacture tested different variations of the technique
A QUIET REMINDER OF THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL THAT AUDEMARS PIGUET’S GEMSETTING TEAM APPLIES TO EVERY WATCH THAT COMES UNDER THEIR LOUPES to refine and tweak the original design. As Cara Barrett, one of the editors of online watch magazine Hodinkee explains: “The lugs became more pronounced, the numerals more exaggerated, and the dials became more asymmetrical. The Millenaries soon became one of the boldest collections produced by Audemars Piguet.” By 2015, this bold, and now most certainly iconic, design was a leader in the burgeoning women’s watch market but, unbeknownst to everyone, Audemars Piguet was working on one of its most important female launches of its history. Back in 2013, Carolina Bucci met with Bennahmias. It had come to the brand’s attention that Bucci had a gold Royal Oak that she never took off and often wore layered with her own bracelets. Audemars Piguet had been looking to add something to its 86

with watch prototypes travelling constantly back and forth between Italy and Switzerland.” The result is a stunning piece that appears to shimmer as if having been set with thousands of tiny diamonds. It is one of those rare things – a watch that seems to suit every woman regardless of her personal style and was a big move forward for Audemars Piguet. As Bucci said at the time of the watch’s launch when speaking to the Telegraph: “This isn’t another fashion watch, made smaller and covered in diamonds. This is an iconic watch with an extra dimension designed for women by a woman. I only design things I’m passionate about and I love this watch.” This year, however, it seems as though Audemars Piguet is gearing to take things up another notch. At Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) it unveiled its first-ever Royal

Oak concept watch for women; albeit ones of very exceptional means. First introduced in 2002, the Royal Oak Concept watches have debuted experimental technologies such as the Supersonnerie, a revolutionary minute repeater with the gongs attached to a copper alloy resonance membrane placed between the plate and the case back, and the Laptimer Michael Schumacher, a seriously impressive split-seconds chronograph. And now there is the women’s Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon. There are diamonds, over 460 of them in fact, but this is the first flying tourbillon produced by Audemars Piguet and that it has been put in a woman’s watch shows that the brand is moving toward producing technologically advanced femaleoriented timepieces rather than just diamond-encrusted haute joaillerie pieces. “Because we were ready!” is Gruber’s respone when asked why the timing was right for a women’s concept watch from Audemars Piguet. “Our Royal Oak Concept is our experimental collection so we had to go a step further
LUXURY WATCH EDIT
and combine high watchmaking with high jewellery in a new way. With these pieces we unveiled the first Audemars Piguet flying tourbillon. So far we have had good feedback and it is exciting for us. We have worked hard on the details of the case and caseback. We wanted to keep our pieces not only technical, but also full of romance. We wanted to touch the heart of women.” And it looks like this isn’t the only way Audmars Piguet is hoping to excite more women watch connoisseurs. When asked if the brand would ever consider doing an entirely new collection for women, Gruber gnomically replies: “We can’t share all our secrets just yet! But definitely stay tuned for next year.” It certainly a statement to get excited about and who knows, maybe we’ll see a women’s launch from Audemars Piguet that rivals the Royal Oak in terms of shaking up the industry and showing everyone else how it’s done. Then Bucci might have to eat her (alleged) words. Audemars Piguet is available online and at ROX Argyll Arcade www.rox.co.uk

WIND BENEATH
HER WINGS Carey Lohrenz was the first woman in US Naval history to fly an F-14 Tomcat and she’s now an ambassador for the ultimate pilot’s watch brand Bremont. Laura McCreddie-Doak found out her incredible story.
S
ay the words F-14 Tomcat to anyone with a passable knowledge of 1980s cinema and they’ll be able to tell you that was the aircraft piloted by Goose and Maverick (or Anthony Edwards and Tom Cruise) in that love letter to aircraft and bromances – Top Gun. If they are more plane geeks then they will probably be able to tell you some facts about the aircraft such as it made its first flight on December 21 1970, that it is able to track 24 targets at once or that the only country now flying them is Iran. The chances of them being able to tell you what Carey Lohrenz’s relationship is to this legendary piece of military aviation is slim. However Lohrenz’s name is very important both to the story of the F-14 Tomcat and to the US Navy as well because she was the first-ever female to pilot this particular aircraft in the whole of US Navy history. The military generally speaking isn’t a family business but it is for the Lohrenz’s. “I knew from the very beginning that I’d be an aviator; flying was in my blood,” she says. “My older brother and I grew up playing with dad’s silk maps and flight gear.” “We’d perform imaginary feats of daring and skill, pretending to be pilots just like our dad, a former United States Marine Corps aviator. After he left the armed forces my dad flew for a major airline until retirement; my mom had been a flight attendant before having us kids. Given this heritage, my brother and I had no doubt even as kids that we were destined for the cockpit– and we were both right.” Flying may have been hard wired into the family but the world of combat pilots was especially male-dominated. www.rox.co.uk

“I was always drawn to the US Navy because I loved that its focus was ‘Mission Before Self’,” Lohrenz explains. "I also knew I wanted to be a naval aviator, which was a coveted title even among men in the field. For a woman, especially in the 1990s aiming for that goal seemed almost silly.” Despite the obstacles that seemed to be in the way of achieving her ambition, Lohrenz was determined. “It’s important to understand on your journey that people will tell you to give up. They’ll tell you say you aren’t cut out for ‘this kind of work’,” she explains in the sort of rhetoric that makes it easy to see how Lohrenz has a second career as a motivational speaker. “But so what if they think that? Why should their opinion change anything? This is your life, your path. These are your dreams. There will be bumps in the road, but there will also be awesome, unforeseen opportunities. And more often than not, as my dad used to say, those who tell you ‘you can’t’ are probably the ones that are most scared you will.” Lohrenz also had an extra thing that would be perceived as standing between her and her piloting goals – her gender. “The path to a piloting career is a challenge for anyone, no matter how driven and naturally skilled you may be,” she says. “What I didn’t know as a child though was that it would require and extra helping of courage from me simply 90
www.rox.co.uk
because I was a girl. I had to learn to stop flying under the radar.” Lohrenz’s earned her wings in 1993, one of the top graduates of her class, and from there she received follow-on order to Naval Air Station Miramar. It wasn’t just her skill that landed her in Miramar, there was a certain amount of timing. Until December 1991 there was a ban on women being allowed in combat aircraft, that changed but women still weren’t permitted to take combat aircraft assignments. That all changed on April 28 1993, when that ban was lifted and the US Navy started putting women in fighter jets, one of which was Lohrenz. But it hasn’t always been blue skies and no turbulence. Lohrenz has previously claimed that the military used her position as one of the first female combat pilots as a way of revoking her right to privacy by making her what is known in US law known as a “voluntary limited-purpose public figure” under defamation law. According to the Supreme Court this is a person who “voluntarily injects himself or is drawn into a particular public controversy and thereby becomes a public figure for a limited range of issues". For Lohrenz, this meant she was at risk of defamation with no real recourse to defend herself, something that occurred when she alleged that institutional sexism had prevented women being properly integrated

into her carrier air group; a move that saw her grounded for two years. Since then Lohrenz has become a keynote speaker, an author and an ambassador for Bremont. “I grew up admiring my dad’s watches and, as you probably know pilots are known to be quite enamoured with high-performance, mechanically stable watches,” she says. “We are all about accuracy and precision, and excellence in mechanical engineering. Bremont came to the market with a vision, a passion, and a standard for excellence I had not seen before.” It wasn’t just the watches that chimed with Lohrenz and her personal ethos, she also found kindred spirits in the brand’s founders – the English brothers. “Nick and Giles English embody what I think – that optimism is the greatest form of rebellion. Not only do they design high performing watches that can endure remarkably exacting testing standards, but Bremont watches are beautifully hand finished with classic, elegant lines as well. Bremont push the boundaries of what previously had been deemed impossible. They are disruptive – and I love that.”

Lohrenz has turned her pilot’s training into a book: “Fearless Leadership: HighPerformance Lessons from the Flight Deck.” Here she gives her top five tips for how to achieve your personal goals and be a better leader: 1. Take action to make your dreams a reality. Bold fearless action drives success. 2. Be courageous. No matter your situation, the number one way to ensure that you’re the best leader you can be is to build your ability to work through fear and do what needs to be done in spite of that fear. The best leaders stare fear, uncertainty, and discomfort in the face. 3. Be tenacious. To become more tenacious as a leader, you have to go out and do it and the “doing it” comes first. When you learn to take action even in situations where you feel stuck, frustrated or intimidated, you increase your ability to get through situations that demand commitment. 4. Be resilient. Those who are resilient no matter what life throws their way, survive and thrive. 5. Be fearless. Your challenge is to confront your fears, to summon up the courage in spite of your fears and go for it anyway! You learn to be fearless by living, not by being afraid.

he Moët & Chandon style is distinctive: a bright fruitiness, a seductive palate and an elegant maturity that are the result of the slow, gradual progression from vine to cellar. Every stage in the process relies on the complementary know-how of vine growers, vat men, cellar men, oenologists (wine experts to those unfamiliar) and other professionals all united by the strong principles that constitute our core values. As chef de cave, Benoît Gouez’s mastery of his art ensures champagne with the distinctive Moët & Chandon character. His style and integrity are essential to bringing out the best in each year’s harvest, in his words, “highlighting and sublimating the special characteristics of the grapes grown in Champagne.” With his consummate respect for the natural qualities of the fruit, this young, atypical chef de cave is the ideal guardian of the Moët & Chandon spirit. Meticulous attention to every facet of the unique winemaking process and the unparalleled richness of the vineyards is the key to Moët & Chandon’s legendary style. Access to the finest and most wide-ranging selection of fruit in the region enables the experts at renowned brand to create wines of quality, precision and uniqueness, wines that truly express the diversity and the complementarity of the three champagne grapes, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.
Pinot Noir: for body, structure and intensity Pinot Meunier: for suppleness, roundness and fullness Chardonnay: for elegance, acidity and freshness Moët cellar master Benoît Gouez explains how Moët & Chandon magnums are the ultimate centre piece for your celebratory moment. Not only a spectacle to behold, the expert even suggests that champagne tastes superior poured from a magnum: “Pouring from a magnum is simply a better way to drink champagne, not only because of the bold and impressive visual aspect but also because of the way the champagne matures in the bottle. A magnum has twice the volume of a standard bottle but the same neck size, so each bottle’s air content is the same, meaning it matures slower and therefore longer, resulting in a more complex and harmonious taste.” As the ultimate celebratory champagne, Moët & Chandon is always at the heart of festivities and milestones in a life time, with one champagne cork popped every second around the globe. But what’s the right way to uncork a champagne bottle? Which glassware should guests be sipping from? Gouez explains the etiquette on glassware: “A flute is a traditional visual cue for champagne and sets it apart when ordered in a restaurant or bar, beautifully showing the effervescence of champagne in the tall glass. www.rox.co.uk

It also allows the champagne to breathe, creating a fruitier, superior taste on your palate. On your special day you may also appreciate the easier to wash glassware!” Despite his expert tips and advice, Gouez, believes there is one key ingredient to best enjoying champagne: “Champagne may traditionally be associated with glamour and etiquette, but truly at the heart of it is celebration. www.rox.co.uk
How did your jewellery collection develop into glassware? While developing the jewellery collection, I started to think about other ways to work with both mediums. I noticed there was a gap in the glassware marketplace – there was a need for a collection that was modern and sophisticated, yet with a slight edge. Basically, not your grandmother’s glassware. I wanted something that allowed us to celebrate the everyday, and not a product that was reserved solely for special occasions.
Tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind Luxor Crystal. The name Luxor was derived from combining the words ‘luxury’ and ‘interior’; glassware was a natural first step, given where I come from. It also allows for new iterations and collections in the future.
succeeding in e-commerce and exemplifying the best levels of marketing. Grant and Kyron are visionaries; they are the definition of marketers and we believe in their concept. They have the highest levels of staff, training and consumer engagement. ROX is a prime example of the new age of retailer.
Can you talk us through the design and manufacturing process? It is a highly collaborative process, working with the finest glass manufacturers and stateof-the-art application partners. We begin with a sketch; while many styles of glassware exist, we like to develop unique versions of classics to give each piece a Luxor vibe. We work with our glassware purveyor, who has been producing glasses for centuries, to bring our vision to life. We then collaborate with our application partner, who hand apply each crystal to every glass. The process is intense, but the end result is well worth every ounce of effort - a beautiful glass that will grace any table, toast any occasion, and is dishwasher safe!
Describe your personal style. Modern and fresh, with an appreciation for simple, effortless elegance How much does your style influence your brand? Immensely. Glassware can be very formal and dated. I am trying to bring modernity to it, while still respecting the tradition.
What are your plans for the future? To continue to create products that people celebrate, enjoy and embrace. We aim to bring a modern voice to the world of glassware and products that define elegance and quality. We are looking to engage new markets, new products solutions. Global expansion, with local execution Luxor Crystal is a real celebration of the in all of our activities. Diamonds & Thrills motto - what made you want to collaborate with ROX? RECONNECTING
WITH NATURE The Botanist Gin is a progressive exploration of the botanical heritage of the Isle of Islay. Professional forager James Donaldson and brand ambassador Abi Clephane explain why home is where the heart is for this iconic gin.

ROX MAGAZINE
James, as a professional forager working for The Botanist Gin, tell us what your job entails. JD: I’m responsible for gathering, preparing and ensuring the sustainable supply of the 22 wild Islay botanicals that go to make The Botanist Gin. Abi, as The Botanist Gin brand ambassador, what does your job involve? AC: I am responsible for spreading the word and love of Bruichladdich distillery around the country. I work on their whole portfolio which includes The Botanist Gin. What’s an average day like for you both? JD: One of the joys of the job is that there is no ‘typical’ day! I’ll generally be out early in the morning to assess the condition of whichever botanicals are in season and be ready to start picking as soon as the morning dew lifts. I’ll take a little from several areas to minimise the impact, so the foraging takes me all around the island and I’ve always got an eye open for new areas and interesting plants. As each of the 22 has its own season when it’s in prime condition I’ll check up on a few different locations while I’m out and about to assess the stage they’re at which will influence my foraging in the weeks ahead. Careful and timely preparation is paramount to preserving the flavours and aromas so I’ll deal with the days’ picking that afternoon. For some, downy birch for instance, it’s as simple as carefully removing any twigs and spreading the leaves out evenly to dry. Others, such as elder blossom, are a bit fiddlier, with each of the tiny blossoms needing carefully snipped from the stems before drying. Every day I will check over and carefully turn any previously gathered material so ensure that it dries steadily and evenly.
FOOD & DRINK
AC: Again for me the reason I love my job as there is no typical day. I do a lot of sit-down tastings with a huge range of people. I also do a lot of events including all industries, from fashion to foraging. Foraging the 22 is often in testing and unruly environments, James tell us what this is like and why it is all worth it. JD: Islay is a botanist’s paradise with an astonishing variety of landscape and ecosystems all within a relatively small area. Foraging the 22 is an incredible opportunity to really get to know the island and to tune in to the seasons, natural cycles and the vagaries of our often unpredictable climate. Sure, the weather can be challenging at times, but that’s what coats are for! Many people today live hectic, busy and often stressful lives and foraging is a great way to slow down, to connect with nature and to see the world around you with fresh eyes. Being employed to do it is a dream come true. The fact that all your efforts are literally distilled into such a delicious gin certainly doesn’t hurt! With so many fabulous natural resources around us, Abi why is it an exciting time for lovers of The Botanist to get into nature and be creative with gin? AC: We have been passionately flying the flag for foraging and getting people back to nature for a long time. It is the way James picks our botanicals and we want to encourage people to be creative in their own ‘backyards’. I think as the foraging movement becomes more and more popular it definitely is becoming more accessible to a wider audience. If you check out your local park you are sure to find something there that is edible and will get you into foraging.

FOOD & DRINK
What are your top tips for foraging locally, James? JD: I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there, start locally. Foraging doesn’t need to involve a trip to the countryside, although it’s a nice excuse. Start by looking at the plants you pass every day, that overgrown corner of the work car park, your local park, take a stroll along the canal path. Get a basic ID book and take it from there. If you find your interest is growing then sign up for a walk with a local forager; they’re happening all over the country almost every weekend. Many of our tastiest and most useful plants are the most common and found in almost every corner of the UK – nettles, common hogweed, hairy bittercress, the list is almost endless. Remember though, never eat anything that you’re not 100 per cent sure of and in an urban area consider the effects of pollution and the local dog population. Even if you won’t eat a plant where you find it it’s great fun to polish your ID skills while waiting for the bus – you’ll soon discover a whole new world on your doorstep. Abi, can you tell us a bit about the #BeTheBotanist concept? The #BeTheBotanist concept is about encouraging people to reconnect with nature as I think this is something that we have lost over the years. We want to show that foraging is easy and is something that everyone can do. Whether it is foraging for seaweed or taking a piece of rosemary from your fridge, it is that simple. For me, it is making the whole idea something that everyone can get behind. Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions, a final one... how do you best enjoy a serve of The Botanist Gin? AC: Personally, I think it is unusual to find a gin that makes a really good gin and tonic, but also a great martini. The Botanist does both perfectly, so if I am on Islay I like to infuse some dulse seaweed in dry sherry and make a martini. If you’re not near a beach, my favourite martini is a dry Gibson martini (garnished with pickled onions). I equally enjoy a B&T with a wee piece of rosemary! Chloe Milligan Business is in bloom for Chloe Milligan, founder of Mud Urban Flowers. Since launching Mud on Instagram last spring things have gone from strength to strength for the Glasgow-based florist, with the brand recently expanding to Edinburgh. Maxine McCreadie caught up with Chloe find out more about how bringing a touch of flower power to social media has secured business success. Tell us a little bit about your career path. I started working for my older cousin Nick Priestly at the age of 17 for his company Mood Flowers. I would wash vases, condition flowers and deliver contracts during the summer holidays. After graduating from university, I travelled and worked in Australia and New Zealand before returning to the UK with the idea to work in London (not in the floral industry). However, while in London, I freelanced for internationally known floral and event designer Holly Chapple at the Chapel Designers London conference. Holly saw potential in me 112

QUICKFIRE our growth. I would say 95 per cent of our marketing has been through social media (mainly Instagram) since day one. Nearly all of our customers have been introduced to Mud through Instagram. Additionally, as we post a new design every day, Instagram is the best way to let people know what the daily design is and how to order it. What’s it like being a business woman in Glasgow? It’s inclusive, supportive and inspiring. Since starting Mud I have met some many amazing businessmen and women in Glasgow and they have all been so supportive of Mud. You recently launched Mud Urban Flowers Edinburgh. What is the difference between the two cities? Edinburgh has an old worldly sense of charm that attracts people from all corners of the globe. It’s more internationally well-known between the two central cities in Scotland as the historical capital, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the better one of the two! From the cobbled streets of the Royal Mile to the grandiose townhouses in New Town, the beauty and culture of Edinburgh means that it’s a place people will always come back to. Glasgow is a very different city compared to its east-coast cousin. It’s got such a vibrant and positive energy that you can feel as soon as you set foot on its streets. What I think is not so appreciated is how beautiful a city it is, but I hope that more and more people will realise that we have sprawling parks and wonderful architecture to offer if only they just look! What’s important to recognise is that Glasgow is a humble city that embraces its flaws. It’s a passionately creative city so it’s definitely one that has such an encouraging atmosphere to make you feel confident in growing a new business. Plans for the future? Expansion! We hope to continue building our brand by bringing Mud to more cities throughout the UK and further afield.
