MEET THE BUYER The role of Fashion Buyer has to be one of the most fabulous jobs within the fashion world. Nina Ghita sat down with Womenswear Buyer for the Flannels Group, Kerry Jacques, to find out more about her fascinating role in the fashion industry.
H
i Kerry, how did you begin your career in fashion? After studying at university in a totally different field, I took a job at Cruise and realised just how much I loved fashion. I progressed from sale advisor to floor supervisor and was given the opportunity to attend some buying appointments. When the position came up for a ladies wear buyer within the company I jumped at the chance…That was 11 years
ago now and as the company has expanded in recent years, we now also handle the buying for our sister company, Flannels! What trends are you loving just now? I am loving all of the sports luxe that’s around, it’s great to be able to throw on a pair of trainers and still look cool! I am not really one for the gym but it's fab that I can still get away with this look now that it is trendy to wear on
– 34 –
the streets too. My pick has to be the ‘Bells’ leopard print trainers from Jimmy Choo - no winter season is complete without a splash of animal print. Are there any key transitional pieces that will carry us from autumn through winter? There are lots of great knits about at the moment, perfect for throwing over your outfit
ROX MAGAZINE
GUCCI Lace Fill Shift Dress £955
So, how would you describe the Flannels / Cruise style? Our ladies love to impress, whether it be in a little black dress from Dolce & Gabbana teamed with killer heels from Valentino or a fab fitting pair of jeans from J Brand with a branded sweat from Kenzo, they set out to look great!
is so strong, That’s why we need to know our customer and ensure we offer them exactly what they want.
BURBERRY LONDON Whorlton Coat £895
if the sun doesn’t decide to shine but as the months draw colder they are ideal for layering, and we all love to snuggle up in cozy jumpers and cardigans in the winter, don’t we? Gestuz, Vince and Theory are full of super soft knits in an array of designs and colours - we are spoilt for choice!
What do you find most challenging about your role as a Buyer? Trends and looks are changing faster than ever so keeping up with this each season is such a tough task, we definitely need to keep our eye on the ball. Us women are hard to keep happy! Trends change at such a rapid speed that we always need to be that one step ahead of everyone else so that we can react to this. Tell us about a typical day at work… No day is ever the same, we might be catching an early morning flight to Milan or train to London for a day of appointments, or we could be heading for a day in the office catching up on orders. A day in the life of a buyer certainly keeps you on your toes! The ladies team attend over 200 appointments each season across clothing, accessories and footwear - there’s so much to see out there. When we are not travelling our days are still just as busy as we are looking at reports and figures, getting in touch with brands and suppliers and speaking to staff in the stores to get their feedback on what is selling well.
“i am loving all of
the sports luxe that’s around, it’s great to be able to throw on a pair of trainers and still look cool!” What are your wardrobe staples for the AW16 season? I think we should all invest in a great fitting coat, some super slim black trousers – they are a must as you can team them with just about everything and they look great for day or night – and a good solid pair of leather boots. It also wouldn’t be winter season without needing to invest in a new little black dress, an absolute must for the upcoming festive season due to its versatility! At Flannels and Cruise, we have so much choice, from the intricate lace detailed shift dress by Gucci to one of the fabulous choices from Three Floor.
FEATURE
What’s the best style advice you’ve ever received? Always invest in a good coat. So many people will see just your outwear as you are out
and about during the cold weather so a super stylish coat is an absolute must. No matter whether you are dressed up or you have thrown on your most casual look, as soon as you button up an amazing coat you feel great! Head to the likes of Moncler, Canada Goose and Michael Kors for your more casual takes and dress it up with a smart look from Gucci, Burberry London and Vivienne Westwood. What trends do you see emerging for SS17? Much to my delight, there are so many shades of pink about for next spring/summer from soft antique rose to daring bright fuchsias. The season is going to be ultra-feminine with lots of lace and pretty detailing. We’ll all be pleased to know the sports luxe trend is going from strength to strength too, it’s not often we can be comfy in what we wear without having to compromise our fashion credentials! Browse the Flannels Womenswear range at any Flannels Store around the UK.
How do you feel about the fashion industry today? I think the industry is really tough, there’s so much competition around and the high street

THE JEWELLERY EDIT How do you find “The One”? Rachael Taylor gives insight into key engagement ring styles, as well an in-depth look at transitional jewellery trends to adopt this winter.

THE JEWELLERY EDIT
THE ONE There is an engagement ring for every personality, from unique fancy cuts to regal asscher cuts and striking yellow diamonds. Rachael Taylor talks diamonds to help you find 'the one' for you. 61902 | £12,500
ROSE GOLD With a soft colour that complements all skin tones, it is easy to see why wearable rose gold has become so popular. Its appealing pinkish hue is achieved by adding copper to the mix of metals blended with pure gold to make it strong enough for goldsmiths to work with. This modern classic is so much more than a passing fashion, and now forms a holy trinity of gold shades alongside white and yellow. And its blush tones contrast beautifully against fiery white diamonds. 66011 | £5,100
SURPRISES Your engagement ring is the only accessory you will never change with the seasons, which is why classic styles are so popular. Yet classic needn’t mean boring, and there are many ways to introduce a little twist. Seek out design flourishes like sharpened talon-style claws to hold the diamond in place, or a flash of diamond pavé secreted beneath the solitaire – that are subtle enough to last the distance, but remarkable enough to keep it interesting. 62182 | £11,500
HALO RINGS Fancy supersizing your diamond? Of course you do. A clever way to do this and stay on budget is to choose an engagement ring style that loops your central diamond with a tightly packed outline of smaller diamonds – a design known as a halo. A flash from a distance will create the illusion of one large stone. Halos also work well to accentuate a contrasting stone, such as a sapphire or yellow diamond, as well as generally upping the sparkle power. 61930 | £3,700

ASSCHER CUTS Her sister’s royal ring inspired myriad brides-to-be, and now Pippa Middleton’s own engagement ring is the most talked about, and aspired to, sparkler of the year. Pippa’s ring has a large Asscher-cut diamond set within a diamondstudded Art Deco frame. For those wishing to emulate Pippa’s sophisticated look, try Vintage styles set with lustrous square-shaped Asscher-cut diamonds, which are prized for creating a hypnotic Hall of Mirrors-style optical illusion. 64211 | £2,995
63799 | £4,995
FANCY CUTS A round diamond might be what your mind evokes when you visualise an engagement ring, but there are plenty more diamond cuts to choose from, and each has its own benefit. Pear shapes, emerald cuts and marquise diamonds elongate the finger. Oval diamonds carry all the sparkle of a round brilliant but stretch it over a larger surface area for a bigger look. And hard-working princess and oval cuts use extra facets to hide inclusions whilst simultaneously delivering extra sparkle. 61786 | £9,995
YELLOW DIAMONDS Olivia Palermo, Kelly Clarkson and Iggy Azalea each broke with tradition by eschewing the traditional white diamond for an engagement ring set with a sunshine-yellow diamond. As well as being strikingly beautiful, these gems are incredibly rare. Less than 0.1% of all the diamonds unearthed from the worlds mines are yellow, which makes your intense yellow diamond even more special and rare. 66086 | £14,500
61797 | £5,895 61766 | £9,995
DELICATE SILHOUETTES For brides-to-be who have fallen for this year’s hip delicate diamond jewels, this could be The One. Engagement rings set solitaires atop demure, yet luxurious, strips of diamonds that dance across the finger, seemingly uninhibited by heavy metal settings. For true understated chic, opt for a subtle half-carat round diamond that almost blends in, or draw attention to the delicacy of the diamond band with a marquise that kicks out in opposite directions. 66231 | £6,495

HOT RIGHT NOW The season's jewellery trends have got the fashion pack hooked with us following hotly in pursuit. Rachael Taylor highlights the key pieces that are too hot to miss this season.
THE BLING RING Fendi’s tinsel dress, Alexander McQueen’s floor-length sequin capes and even the king of the casual cut, J.W. Anderson, are changing lanes to indulge in an exploration of modern cocktail dressing which signals one thing – it’s time to play dress up this season. Cocktail rings are jewellery shorthand for party and a bold flash of diamonds sparkling from your finger will cut through atmospheric lighting to electrify the night. Try vintage-inspired designs for old-school glamour, or celestial crossover styles for a modern look. 65253 | £1,795 , 65251 | £2,295
INSPIRED BY NATURE During Paris Couture Week, the city’s luxury hub Place Vendôme was transformed by Chanel into a glorious wheat field, celebrating the ever-regenerative beauty of nature. Most of the Week’s luxury jewellery drew inspiration from some element of nature, and on this season’s catwalks Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Gucci and Dior all revelled in maximalist leafy brocades. Join the garden party by wrapping yourself in the curvaceous leaves of the Tiki collection or play pick up sticks with linear Bamboo jewels. 65644 | £325

INDUSTRIAL MOVEMENT Tools as jewels has been a trend that has brought an exciting industrial edge to fine jewellery. Cartier’s iconic Juste un Clou collection broke the mould on Bond Street by wrapping precious nails (the hammer and nail variety) round fingers and wrists, opening the door for a flood of gold and diamond nuts, bolts and screws. For a more abstract – and wearable – take on this trend, try the Synchro collection of rings and bangles with strips of geometric bars studded with diamonds. 63914 | £7,995, 64588 | £4,995
PERSONALISE ME Personalised jewellery is a key trend this season, but it will also lead you to jewels that you will cherish for a lifetime. An initial pendant studded with tiny brilliant diamonds is an investment piece you will rarely want to be parted from, and silver jewels engraved with names, dates or personal messages make perfect gifts. And for a quick pick-me-up, clasp on a bracelet with a motivational message like ‘believe’, ‘hope’ or ‘faith’ scripted in gold. 64577 | £195, 63986 | £395
GALACTIC INFLUENCES As the departure of David Bowie rocketed Starman onto every radio wave on the planet and Star Wars fever gripped the masses, designers were busy charting collections that will take us to galaxies far, far away this season. To achieve the look with jewellery, silver is the perfect space-age material. For bold accessorising that will take any outfit into the stratosphere, channel your inner Barbarella through the angular lines and futuristic folds of the DNA collection. 64701 | £225
CLUSTER DIAMONDS With so many trends – and, let’s face it there are too many to try - familiar designs are an appealing safe haven. Just as the fussy frills, elaborate ruffles and dark velvets of yore dominate AW16’s evening looks, jewels are making a nod to the traditional, with classic clusters and star settings suddenly looking fresh and contemporary. Slip on a pair of diamond cluster studs or diamond star pendant and feel yourself relax into the sparkling company of an old acquaintance. 63206 | £2,995, 63207 | £3,995

ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE
CLASSIC FUSION KING GOLD PAVE
KALPARISMA
Say the words “Royal Oak Offshore” to anyone with a passing interest in watches and the immediate impression it generates is one of a chunky, masculine sports watch – the very definition of brawny. That is why this female Offshore is so surprising, because it shouldn't work but does. The iconic tapisserie pattern has been made smaller, which softens the dial, while the diamonds also help feminise the Offshore’s lines. It still has that sporty feel associated with the original design; it’s just been given a woman’s touch. 65505 | £22,900
Once again Hublot proves that pave doesn’t always mean pretty. This fabulouslooking timepiece mixes diamonds – 114 of them to be precise – with a matt black dial to create something rather dramatic. It has also taken the bold approach of paring precious stones with a rubber strap. The result is a watch that manages to tread that line between day and night and classic and contemporary. The only thing you need to switch up to change its personality is your wardrobe. 65291 | £21,300
Wearing white used to be something only done between the months of June and August. In recent years, the fashion pack have been experimenting with this shade during the winter months, but, if you’re not entirely sure you can work white as the nights draw in, you can toe the trend’s water with this fabulous Kalparisma from Parmigiani. This timepiece isn’t all good looks and no substance. Parmigiani made the decision to equip this with the PF4000 movement, which is made in its Manufacture. SOLO 32 Bremont, with its adventurer ambassadors and flying connections, definitely billed itself as the brand of gentlemen, worn by the sorts of seriously nice chaps who really should have been around in the 1940s. However, with this latest addition to its collection, it could be about to allow women into this club. The iconic Solo design has been reduced to 32mm, given Roman numerals and a burgundy leather strap. It still has the hardened steel Bremont Trip-Tick case construction and is a COSC-certified chronometer; it’s just been dressed up in a prettier frock. 65315 | £2,895
CLASSIMA
GRG
SHINE
This gorgeous Classima is the LBD of watches. You look at it and think that there is no occasion where it wouldn’t be appropriate. The mother-of-pearl dial, with sunray inner circle and diamond indices is a masterclass in how to design something that is feminine but not patronising, while the steel bracelet fits the wrist perfectly. It is also an automatic, which is a pleasant surprise because that isn’t always a given with Baume & Mercier’s women’s watches. It’s simply a watch with which it’s hard to find fault. 64873 | £2,090
To borrow from Zoolander, Gucci is “so hot right now”. Everyone from Beyonce to the fashion set want to be seen in Alessandro Michele’s “geek chic via your Nan’s wardrobe” creations. Thankfully, his vision has also spread to the watches and jewellery. If you thought Gucci was all about the double Gs, then this will make you think again. From his latest collection, this bold Plexiglas piece shows that you really can bring some fashion nous to watches without a ridiculous price tag to accompany it. 65349 | £380
Versatility is a real watchword this year when it comes to timepieces. At the higher end of the horological landscape, Vacheron Constantin and Ralph Lauren have brought out watches with interchangeable straps, while Shore Projects has made its name doing just that. So it is no surprise that Raymond Weil’s Shine model comes with two straps. Sport the steel for the ideal daily wearer and then give it an “after dark” twist with black satin. Just having one strap option is so 2015… 65537 | £2,295

PASSION & FRIENDSHIP This year marks the 20th anniversary of Michel Parmigiani and Pierre Landolt coming together to form the luxury watch empire that is Parmigiani Fleurier.
M
ichel Parmigiani started his career in 1976 when he opened a restoration workshop, despite the quartz watch crisis which was in the process of ravaging the traditional watchmaking industry, and against everyone’s advice. “When one has had the chance to work on as many wonders of the past as I have done”, he said, many years later, “it was simply impossible to believe that traditional watchmaking would die out”. Michel Parmigiani developed a method of restoration that became his work ethic. His watchmaking skills were constantly improved by the lessons learnt from every piece he restored. He began to make a name for himself amongst
watch museums and collectors who sought out his talents. In the 1980s, he was entrusted with the care of the Maurice Yves Sandoz collection. It was in this capacity that he met Pierre Landolt, president of the Sandoz Family Foundation, whose admiration and confidence in him would sow the seeds for this incredible watchmaking adventure. In 1996, Michel Parmigiani acquired the production means and resources to create a brand that would bear his own name. Parmigiani Fleurier turned its focus to creation, through a watchmaking centre able to manufacture and perfect all the components of a watch, without ever losing the link to its origins. The brand still has an active restoration workshop at its heart, enriching today's creations

with inspiration and expertise taken from the horological wonders created by our fathers. Over 20 years, Parmigiani Fleurier has developed a range of products which reflects the strength of its manufacture and the talent of its founder. No less than 33 original movements have been unveiled since this day in 1996. To celebrate 20 years of watch production, Parmigiani Fleurier presents an anniversary edition of the Kalpa Piccola and Kalpa Donna women’s collections, with their iconic tonneau shape. This is an opportunity for the manufacture to unveil its new, all-gold quartz movement hidden inside a steel case – like a treasure chest that conceals its riches within.
ROX MAGAZINE
The dials of the Kalpa Piccola and Kalpa Donna Anniversaire are decorated with mother of pearl, a uniquely precious, feminine material. This mother of pearl has been engraved to give a flinqué effect, whilst reflecting the hour divisions. The pattern therefore becomes a form of index. This subtle decoration is more reminiscent of a sheet of fabric than a dial – an invitation to slip away from the world of timekeeping and revel in elegant femininity. A small diamond is harmoniously inserted into the dial’s surface using a closed setting. Serving as a focal point, it creates a play of light that radiates across the mother of pearl, accentuating the impression of depth. The Parmigiani Fleurier logo appears at the bottom of the dial, harking back to the brand’s very first timepieces – a fitting reference for an anniversary piece. The mother of pearl is available in four colours. A mandarin orange dial paired with a red leather strap; a luminous white dial with an off-white leather strap; a lilac dial whose reflections are set off by an enamel white leather strap; and finally, a Tahitian mother of pearl dial accompanied by an étoupe leather strap. A steel bracelet is also available with all of these colours, adding a dash of modernity to the piece. Each version comes as a limited edition of 96 pieces – a figure that refers to the year in which Parmigiani Fleurier was founded. On the back of the piece, the rose gold movement reveals its refinement and exalts the beauty of the piece. The main plate, bridges and gears have been produced in the Parmigiani watchmaking centre, and decorated to the very highest standards characteristic of Haute Horlogerie. A central bridge takes the shape of the iconic lug at the heart of Parmigiani Fleurier’s visual identity. This motif is also engraved across the other surfaces of the movement, creating a myriad of symbols that dance around three

rubies. Creating this decoration is a very delicate process, due to the difficulties inherent in working with gold, and owing to the extremely thin bridges, so designed to keep the piece as refined as possible. The Kalpa Piccola Anniversaire and the Kalpa Donna Anniversaire are two sister collections that differ only in their dimensions yet converge in spirit: a highly feminine timepiece that bears the symbols of 20 years of expertise. ROASTED FIGS WITH ROSEMARY ON PAIN PERDU Michelin starred chef Martin Wishart shares an autumnal dessert recipe sure to get mouths watering. Follow the steps below to recreate this dish at home.
F
resh figs are imported throughout most of the year. The best of the European crop come from Turkey and Greece and are at their most luscious in autumn. They should be dark purple on the outside and feel soft to the touch when you buy them. Their skins should have a soft bloom, which needs to be wiped off with a damp piece of kitchen paper. When you cut them open the inside should be a vibrant deep red, almost a maroon shade. This dessert works best when the figs have been quickly roasted in the oven with a little honey and then served with Pain Perdu, more commonly known as French toast. The Pain Perdu is a good way of using up bread which is starting to go stale. The beaten eggs are sweetened with a little sugar; spices such as cinnamon can be added for more flavour and work very well with the roasted figs. To finish, a generous spoonful of Greek yoghurt is the perfect match.
ROASTED FIGS WITH ROSEMARY ON PAIN PERDU Serves 6 6 ripe black fresh figs 2 sprigs of rosemary 50g unsalted butter 3 tbsp runny honey 6 x 2cm thick slices of brioche loaf 6 whole eggs 6 tbsp double cream 6 tbsp caster sugar Vegetable oil 90g flaked almonds Directions Cut the figs in half lengthways. Melt the butter in a heavy pan and add the figs and rosemary. Place the fig pan into the oven at 200˚C for 4-5 minutes. Remove the fig pan from the oven, add the honey to the pan and cook on a gentle heat for 1 minute. Set the fig pan aside. Put the eggs, cream and caster sugar into a

bowl and whisk them well to dissolve the sugar. Place one slice of brioche into the bowl and turn it over to allow it to soak up some of the mix. Heat a little vegetable oil in a non-stick pan and cook the brioche on a gentle heat until lightly browned. Turn the brioche over and cook until evenly coloured on the other side. Repeat the process for the remaining brioche, keeping the cooked pieces warm in a low oven. Cook the almonds on a tray in the oven until they turn a golden brown colour. Place one piece of brioche on a plate and top with 4 halves of the figs and sprinkle some of the almonds on top. Drizzle some of the honey over, around the figs and serve immediately.

BEAUTY
BEAUTY TRENDS The variety of beauty looks seen on the catwalk each season never fail to impress, but a few striking key trends always shine through. Here are our favourite looks from this season and how to make them work for you.
GLOSS OVER Thick, contoured make-up is a trend of the past as natural, healthy skin has taken over the catwalks this season. To achieve this effect, use a very light weight foundation and dab Vaseline on to eyes, cheek bones and cupids bow. This look is understated yet striking as the glistening effect will appear to come from your own skin, not the enhancement of a make-up.
DARK BERRY LIPS Berry-like lips were featured all over the runway this season, but it was Diors’ strong, dark berry lip colours that stole the spotlight. This smouldering look can be achieved by layering on dark colour and adding gloss for a mirror finish.
GLITTER TEARS Glitter is making a statement this year, with designers such as Burberry and Saint Laurent artistically placing glitter in a pool of “tears” leading from the outer eye down to the cheek-bone. This visual masterpiece is ideal for a statement make-up look that will turn heads.

There is an age old saying that ‘’Summer bodies are made in winter’, do you believe this is true? It 100% is true. The key is to work hard in the winter months when no one is really looking then by bikini season you're ready to rock it. The winter months are where we push ourselves really hard and get the toughest bits of our training done as our competitions start up in January. So winter is a tough but worthwhile season whether you're a diver or not. We hear you have been involved with Red Sky Management since you were just 9-years old. How important have they been on your journey? Red Sky have known me so long I think of them as family. I remember when I was really young they took me to the Adidas store and got me loads of kit, which is probably where my "looking the part" ethos stemmed from. Now I'm older they help me with sponsorship but also have helped me interact with other elite athletes which has helped me so much because my sport can be very isolated so feeling I have all of team Red Sky behind me is such an asset. There's also the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Spring 2017 and past that my eye is on Tokyo 2020. It's all very exciting but I'm more excited to get back to the hard work and doing what I love. BALLERINA BEAUTY The life of a Ballerina is one of beauty, elegance and talent. Scottish Ballet Soloist, Marge Hendrick gives us a peek into the mysterious and dramatic world of a ballet dancer.
F
or Scottish Ballet Soloist Marge Hendrick, glamour is a way of life both on and off the stage. “My style is similar to ballet,” says Hendrick. “It needs to look effortlessly chic and refined.” Citing the Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn as her style icon, Hendrick favours classic glamour over throwaway fashion trends. “Audrey Hepburn embodied femininity and elegance with such simplicity. Her looks were so
timeless, that she's still an inspiration.” Despite her penchant for glamour, Hendrick’s hectic rehearsal schedule often leaves her craving comfort when she is off duty. “I like wearing casual clothes when I'm not rehearsing. After being in tight outfits such as leotards, costumes, and tights all day, it's nice to put on a loose pair of jeans and a relaxed shirt or blouse afterwards.” Wearing pointe shoes every day takes its

toll on her feet too, meaning she doesn’t get to wear her beloved high heels as often as she would like. “I love heels, even though I'm already quite tall, but I can't wear them every day. My feet need a break after being compressed in point shoes for 6 hours a day!” On-stage, Hendrick favours glamorous tutus featuring elaborate embroidery and beadwork, and lots of jewellery: “The best costume I have worn was the one for the “Arabian dance” in

Scottish Ballet’s The Nutcracker. It is a tutu in shades of gold, orange and red with lots of jewels. I wore jewels around my neck, arms and wrists. I felt beautiful.” Hendrick, who was born in Paris, first joined Scottish Ballet in 2012 and was promoted to Soloist earlier this summer. Hendrick claims her style hasn’t changed much since she moved to Glasgow, with her retaining her distinctive French charm. However, she admits she has been forced to add winter woollies and wellies to her wardrobe due to Scotland’s inclement weather. Ballet has long been a way of life for Hendrick. She started ballet classes age 5 even though it didn’t occur to her then that ballet would one day become her career. As she grew up, she started to take ballet more seriously. “When I turned 18, everything made sense,” reflects Hendrick. “And I realised how fulfilling being a dancer could be. I was not just a ballet student anymore; I was willing to go through everything that leads to a professional career, no matter how hard it was.” Hendrick underwent intense training at the Conservatory National Supérieur of Paris and Junior Ballet classique CNSMDP and with Royal Ballet, before joining Scottish Ballet. Her first lead role came in 2013 when she was cast as The Witch in Scottish Ballet’s Hansel & Gretel, choreographed by the Company’s CEO / Artistic Director Christopher Hampson. “The first feature role I performed was the Witch in Hansel and Gretel and this is the one that has meant the most to me. A year after I joined Scottish Ballet, I had the opportunity to learn this role as a cover. One day in rehearsal, the lead dancer was ill and I had to jump in as the Witch for the first time. I got really nervous as I wanted to show that I was able to do it.” Hendrick’s effort paid off as she was cast in the role of Witch and performed the role during Scottish Ballet’s Winter 2013 tour. She relishes

The Witch is the most glamorous and charming person so that she can lure the children away, but in the second act, she becomes this ugly and cruel old woman and reveals her real personality.” Hendrick is grateful that she gets to live out her childhood dream of being a ballet dancer. “The most beautiful thing about being a ballet dancer is to be on stage and deliver the best you can to the audience. It takes a whole journey to get to that point, along with choreographers, other dancers, ballet masters. I get so much pleasure out of my performances, what I do is so rewarding.”
Scottish Ballet will perform Hansel & Gretel by Christopher Hampson at Festival Theatre, Edinburgh, Theatre Royal, Glasgow, His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen and Theatre Royal, Newcastle in December 2016, and January and February 2017. www.scottishballet.co.uk

STYLISH INTERIORS Award-winning, Scottish-born Interior Designer, Amanda Rosa, gives us a glimpse into her creative mind and offers up some interior design tips. Words by Nina Ghita.
S
o Amanda, we’re sitting here in the new Dakota Deluxe Hotel and I have to say the interior is beautiful. How did you come up with the concept and design? First of all thank you, it’s lovely to hear. The original Dakota’s are now ten years old so when the opportunity arose in the city centre of Glasgow, we knew it was time to move the design on. It was time to take Dakota to another level by creating Dakota Deluxe. The design is sophisticated, elegant and timeless but still the
spirit of Dakota... and fun! We have looked to create a hotel that doesn’t feel as if it has been designed, ‘design for design’s sake’, instead we prefer to create a feeling that it couldn’t have been any other way. You have designed such contrasting venues. How do you get yourself into the right mindset for each project? Each project is different, but the philosophy remains the same - style that lasts, not fashion that fades.
– 88 –
Where does your inspiration come from? Many sources: travel, fashion, art etc. Sometimes it can be as obscure as a colour or piece of music. No two projects are the same. Did you always know that you wanted to be an Interior Designer? I headed off to Art College not knowing what I wanted to specialise in. I kind of fell into interior design as the application form to Art College had asked what you wanted to be in 4 years time, I had no idea, but to answer the question, for

some reason, I put Interior Designer. When I arrived on the first day of college I was told that I had been enrolled into the Interior Design course, which I hadn't expected. If I wanted to change, it wouldn’t have been possible to revert back to Interior Design, so I decided to stay and give it a go! Let’s call it fate. What is your own personal style, in your own home? Our home is our sanctuary; it has an amazing feeling of calmness. It was built in the 1930’s, so hint of Art Deco with a modern twist. It has soft neutral tones, with great lighting, art and sound. What do you love most about your job? I don’t always love my job! There are days when I find it can be totally exasperating. However, on the flip side, when a project is finished, and everything is in place, it is very rewarding and worthwhile. You are of course each project is different but married to famous hotelier, Ken the philosophy remains the McCulloch, and have designed same style that lasts not hotels together. Is it difficult to work so fashion that fades closely as a married couple? Ken and I work very well together because ROX is all about Diamonds & Thrills... we are of “like minds” with very similar taste. We so we have to ask... how do you get your recently wanted to change a particular piece of thrills? We need to know... what is “in” right now for interior design styles? I don’t really follow trends, I tend to work on what feels right for the client space. Trends come and go too quickly for me.

You can see Amanda’s latest design project first hand at the new Dakota Deluxe Hotel in Glasgow.
And what would you say is a definite no-no for home interior? Be careful when buying on impulse, invariably they don’t last. Also, give a new home time and eventually it will tell you what it needs. Don’t rush it! You are clearly very stylish yourself. What is your favourite kind of jewellery? My favourite jewellery is very simple, a great watch. I am currently wearing a Bremont Solo 37 (by brothers Giles and Nick English) with a simple diamond eternity band. We have a passion for watches and are currently intrigued by Bremont, a relatively new company which appears to be going from strength to strength.
