Foreword Each semester, we look forward to the BFA Exhibition and discover the works of some of the most creative young artists in Miami. It is also an opportunity to think about their future and to wish them the best of success as they embark on what we hope will be a wonderful career in the Arts. The Class of 2013 is a large, eclectic group working in a wide variety of media, and they have been organized and attentive to the responsibilities that come with exhibiting in the professional setting of a museum. Thanks to the guidance of the Art faculty, and Professor Tori Arpad-Cotta, this class has installed one of our most interesting exhibits, and demonstrated that FIU has one of the finest Art Departments in Florida. The Frost Art Museum is proud to show the work of this talented group and wishes them the best for the future.

Outset Outset is, beginning and ending, a transition, a liminal moment when accepted paradigms fall away and potential is revealed. John Szarkowski said, “Photography is a contest between a photographer and the presumptions of approximate and habitual seeing. And while he spoke of photography, the same could be said of art, generally. This moment, these works, all intend to arrest us from the customary, to invite us to see. Tori Arpad-Cotta Associate Professor of Art & BFA Thesis Coordinator

Photographs of discarded, raggedy objects suspended in a black, vacuum-like background become a point of departure for conversations about the process of gentrification. The objects are residue–surviving silent witnesses of the complex set of sociopolitical practices and dynamics of power that exist behind the creation of the Art District in the heart of Wynwood, a poor Miami neighborhood.

Beauty Queen Stigmata Performance still 2012

Orestes De La Paz uses performance alongside video and/or sound installations to suggest new connections between objects and their rituals. He enjoys using irreverence and sarcasm to balance out moments of religious burlesque and clean form. His work draws from daily observations, a theatrical sensibility, and intensive research. He is also left-handed.

Contemporary shrines inside the home. Planned or unplanned collections. Tchotchkes, mementos and whatnots. Repositories of an intimate nature. I call these accidental reliquaries.

“Nature consists not only in itself objectively, but at least just as much as its subjective reflection from the person, spirit, age, looking at it, in the midst of it, and absorbing it: [it] faithfully sends back the characteristic beliefs of the time or individual…” – Walt Whitman, Specimen days & collect

Images are stacked together into identifiable figures, constructed and formed, amidst a vacuous black space. Every new layer reveals insights, glimpses of individual idiosyncrasies, and what each person chose to share during our photographic session.

Luminous utensils rest on a reflective metal surface, detaching form from function. My photographs transform the physicality of everyday tools into a language of structure and light. Through this process, I contemplate the beauty in the mundane.

When I am in one place I seek the other; somehow a part of me feels always lost. I’ve lived in three cities on three different continents, and always felt as if I was starting a new life while leaving another. As I walk through the streets of my present city, I strive to find something surprising yet familiar at the same time. I photograph connections between the reflected and real worlds to express my story of duality and contradictions. Art is a bridge to my happiness; yet I am still searching, longing to find a place I call home.
