Editor ’s Letter Finally, a magazine for the rest of us... Welcome to the first issue of My Ny Magazine. I came up with the idea for this magazine because I think that our society has become overly obsessed with celebrities and the impossible standards of Hollywoord—and I think enough is enough. The young people of New York need a magazine that will bring fashion and lifestyle news back to earth, not hold it at an unattainable height. My Ny is the magazine for New Yorkers made by New Yorkers that gives us all a sense of belonging. Every other week, we’ll be featuring real people with real talents and drive—people you might even know. We’ll be offering realistic fashion trends that you’ll be able to get right here in your wonderful city. Also, we’ll be reviewing the up and coming hot spots including restuarants, nightlife, museums, and more that you’ll definitely need to check out. Uncovering what’s seldom covered in other publications, My Ny focuses on what makes us true New Yorkers and how we don’t need to be celebrities to live young and fabulous lifestyles. So, please enjoy this first issue of My Ny, and look for a new issue out on newsstands in two weeks. Until then, feel free to let us know what you think by shooting me an email at Faye@MyNy.com. Best,

The Editor in Chief judging Season 3 of America’s Next Top Model

What’s Funky a

Ilili 236 5th Ave. (27th St.) New York, NY 10001 212.683.2929

In this theater of more than 300 seats, about a third of them in an amber-glowing main dining room whose walls resemble a network of illuminated cubbyholes, Lebanese food gets the sort of stylish trappings accorded to Thai at Kittichai, Chinese at Buddakan and Japanese at Megu, Matsuri and so many other mega-restaurants around town. In fact Ilili is probably the atmospherically grandest excursion into Middle Eastern cooking that New York has seen.

Delacqua 2027 86th St. Brooklyn, NY 11214 718.266.1233

Established in 2002, Delacqua has been known as one of the premier hair salons and spas in Brooklyn . It was in Rome, Italy that the founder Alex Bederoff was first inspired with the idea of Delacqua salon and spa while proposing to his wife on a gondola floating on the Venice canal. To bring a little bit of Europe back to the USA so that he could always have a piece of that beautiful moment with him and so upon his return, he began to build his dream.

Mascaró started making ballet shoes by hand on the Mediterranean island of Menorca in 1918, and today marries the most advanced design and manufacturing technologies with traditional craftsmanship. Add in up to the minute fashion design and the finest materials and you have the perfect footwear and accessories for any occasion. In the larger Jaime Mascaró stores there are also wallets, belts, leather jackets, shearling coats, luggage and briefcases.

Kiss & Fly 409 W. 13th St. New York, NY 10014 212.255.1933

There’s an unmistakable jet-set air to Kiss & Fly, and not just because of the European dance music and flowing Veuve Clicquot. The name of the flighty, flirty nightclub comes from a passenger drop-off area in an airport in the south of France. And this is one crowd that might actually get the reference: young, rich, and overwhelmingly European.

s Socialites of the

Week

Each week, we put a spotlight on some city socialites that are making waves, either on their block, or throughout Manhattan. If you or your friends happen to be making a splash in your social circle, perhaps you might be featured on the next page. Text by Victoria Beckham. Pictures by Jake Gyllenhaal.

Summer Rej

One of the beautiful blondes behind Three Blondes fashion line. By Louis Vuitton. Though Summer Rej and I were only a year apart when we attended Cornell University, we didn’t cross paths till we were out-and-about back in our native NYC. Rej, who works at Vogue by day, has just launched her first jewelry line, Three Blondes, alongside her longtime friends Jennifer Meyers and Kristy Rao. Rej spoke to tFS about what inspired her line, Chanel’s Tickled Pink, growing up in the city that never sleeps, and more… Three Blondes is comprised of myself, Jennifer Meyers and Kristy Rao. Jennifer and I have been best friends since we attended high school together at the Calhoun School in New York City. Kristy and I grew up two blocks away from each other on the Upper East Side and have practically known each other our entire lives. Jennifer and I started a clothing line together in high school. It was featured in NYCircuit Magazine and featured sassy statement tees with sayings like, “I summer in the Hamptons,” “Debutante Striptease,” and “Ladies who Lunch.” We had to put things on hold though when we left for college, but we always knew that we would once again join forces because as creative as we can be apart, when we put our minds together, we even surprise ourselves! Kristy and I hadn’t seen each other for years, but after running into each other through a mutual friend, we rekindled our friendship. Jennifer and I knew right away that Kristy was the missing link in what would become Three Blondes. Our collection celebrates the

12

M y NY

art of dressing up. We want Three Blondes jewelry to instantly transform the wearer into a “Three Blondes Girl. This is a girl who’s carefree and fashion forward. She’s timeless, yet cool enough to be different. All her friends want to dress like her and raid her closet—better yet, all her friends want to be her. Her style is eclectic: she can be a 1920s movie star, she can be a downtown art gallery-hopper who adopts a style before it becomes cool, and yet, she’s somehow always ready for a lunch date on Madison Avenue or at afternoon of shopping on Fifth. She looks like any second she can be a Helmut Newton photograph come to life. Decadent and extravagant yet somehow the Three Blondes Girl is still approachable and accessible. We’re inspired by mixed materials and incorporate this into our line. We love mixing unlikely fabrics with metals to create texture and dimension. We love crystals and sequins. We love to test unexpected color combinations. This is shown especially with our cuff bracelets, all of which possess a sequined or crystal appliqué with an oversized bow and versatile color palette. We find inspiration everywhere: magazines, art, architecture, film to the most unexpected of sources. Our hair barrettes were actually inspired by, literally, the icing on the cake; those colorful pastel flowers on top of cakes and cupcakes. Our necklaces combine charms with chains to create a dramatic look.

Liam McMullan The Purple Prince of the city talks life, love, and drugs. By Oscar De La Renta.

“I’ve been too high lately to be terrified of anything,” Liam McMullan said as he loped down Broadway on a recent afternoon to audition for a remake of the movie Fame. Twenty years old, he wore jeans, a purple T-shirt, beat-up Chuck Taylors and a Batman fanny pack containing a jar of marijuana, a bottle of Excedrin for the migraines he been getting lately, and a cell phone and iPod. When he was 2 years old, Liam was featured in a VH1 special on children with wild parents—his are nightlife society photographer Patrick McMullan and the artist Laurie Ogle. His godparents are Village Voice gossip columnist Michael Musto and Mudd Club DJ Anita Sarko. His parents brought Liam to Warhol’s Factory when he was 3 weeks old. Liam spent most of his childhood on the Upper West Side with Mom, whom he affectionately calls a “slacker”; since 15, he’s mostly stayed at his dad’s round-the-clock photo lab apartment on Eighth Street and Fifth Avenue. As a teenager, Liam traveled to movie premieres, parties and galas at his dad’s side, helping out and taking it all in; on his own, he showed up in a Levi’s commercial and a Vanity Fair photo spread of young society gents. “I didn’t even know what he was doing so much,” says Patrick McMullan. “Kid’s all fuck around. You try to

be supportive. I try not to be bourgeois, I try to get him to follow his enjoyment of life.” College wasn’t so much in the picture, though Liam made a point of getting his high-school diploma. (“I saved the money for him to go to college,” says McMullan père. “He said, ‘Dad, if I were to go to school right now, it would be a waste of your money.’” I couldn’t argue with him on that one.) “I’ve always wanted to do lots of things, like direct movies, and write things, and make art, all different types,” Liam said. He resembles a skinnier, more feminine version of Marlon Brando, with wispy sideburns and peach fuzz. He speaks in a soft, slow, melodic voice. He’s currently recording his first album in a windowless music studio on 30th Street and Eighth Avenue, which he calls the dungeon. At around 10 p.m. on a recent night, he and his collaborator, 33-year-old producer Chris Young, were tinkering with the nine songs they have done so far. Their goal is to reach thirteen total by next March. “I’m more than happy to show people what we have,” Liam said. “But we can even just make something right now, you know? What do you think we should make a song about?” How about his childhood? He nodded, took a few tokes of a glass pipe in the shape of a mushroom,.

Socialites

The Fabulous Four These days, this foursome is taking Manhattan by storm. By Patricia Field.

So January was cold, and February was short, but now it’s finally March. And you know what that means? It’s party time! No, not for you. For people who matter. We know since SocialiteRank.com shut down nearly a year ago, you haven’t been as able to keep track of what’s been going on with Tinsley and Zani and Margherita, but, trust us, they’re still out every night, flawlessly executing that arm move that Ellen Page has been trying to imitate! See, March is when the events for young socialites really begin in earnest. Last night saw the Riverkeeper benefit at the Hearst Tower, hosted by the ecocharity’s junior council. Scheduled next week is

#14

the American Museum of Natural History’s Winter Dance and the Frick’s Young Fellows’ Ball. A quick peek down the list of all the host committees show that, this year, all the fun is dominated by one set of friends. Claire Bernard, Maggie Betts, and Jamie Johnson are on the committees of all three of the above events, and they are joined here and there by Amanda Hearst, Hudson Morgan, Annie Churchill, Andrew Black, Derek Blasberg, and Byrdie Bell. This is a little bit of a shift away from the Tinsley-Dabney-Lydia axis, but it’s essentially the same gang. Which isn’t surprising, only… where’s Olivia Palermo?

Socialites

Zani Gugelmann, Nicola Breytenbach, Fabiola Beracasa, and Claire Bernard at last year’s Museum of Natural History Winter Dance.

The pretty young socialite, who tried so hard last year to make her way onto the e-mail lists that eventually morph into the host committees for events such as these, seems to have slowed her efforts. Either that or the old troop above is just being more aggressive about ignoring her. (The only thing worse than being e-mailed about is not being e-mailed about, right?) After all, getting people to put their names on the invitations to these events is more about making sure you have asses to put in all the rented chairs than about prestige. “There’s such a glut of events around now that you need to have people on the committees signed in with blood to make sure they go,” explained one regular event host. “If it’s a big committee list, they know that they’ve got that many people buying tickets.” Wait, the point wasn’t to try to get people to come in the hopes that they’d be able to smoke out Arden

Wohl? We’ve been buying tickets for all the wrong reasons! So what’s Olivia up to? There’s no better way than to ask, right? “I’m finishing up with school at the New School,” she told us at a cocktail party for New Yorkers for Children last night at Bally. “I have about a year left, and then I’m going into acting lessons, and we’ll see how that goes.” Palermo has already spent some time in Los Angeles auditioning for roles. She’s studying media at school, and she explains that she hasn’t totally dropped from the social circuit. “Next week, I have the Museum of the City of New York, which I’m on the committee for, and that’s pretty much it,” she explained. “I just go to the things I really support. I try not to go to everything, be selective.” That sounds so, well, reasonable. Go, Olivia! Looks like her year of getting bullied by the likes of Tinsley Mortimer has given her a good perspective on social life.

Interview With a New Yorker

Kristin Brennan

Age: 23 Occupation: FIT Student/Visual Designer for Eryne Byrniegh in Soho. Neighborhood: Murray Hill Why MyNy wanted to interview her: She might not graduate until May, but Brennan is already making waves in the fashion world with her unique visual eye and talent.

TELL US WHY WE SHOULD SEE YOUR STORE. It’s a remake of one of the highest-grossing Korean films ever. It’s about a nice guy who falls in love with someone who’s a little bit crazy.

THANKS, WE APPRECIATE IT. I’ve talked to older actors like Kiefer Sutherland who say this celebrity-obsessed insanity comes and goes. In the ‘80s there was the Brat Pack with Kiefer and his buddies, but then it died.

IN THE KOREAN VERSION, THERE ARE SOME PRETTY WILD SCENES, RANGING FROM SEXY TO GROSS. ARE THEY HERE, TOO? We don’t have the vomiting scene, but I did slap my poor costar Jesse Bradford in the face a few times. My character speaks her mind, which was fun to play, because I’m usually gentler with my words. It’s my Canadian nature. We’re generally polite and don’t like confrontation.

HAS KIEFER TOLD YOU ANY WILD STORIES? None that I could say, ‘cause then he’d kill me.

IS THAT WHAT HELPS YOU KEEP A LOW PROFILE? I live my life, but always stay conscious of the fact that the press is going to do what they’re going to do. Things do get said about me, but if I worried about what people made up or speculated, I’d go insane. Especially with the Internet and blogging.

OK, THEN WHEAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY LEFAY? Tim Allen plays my deceased father, and I have to deal with his ex-wives while planning his funeral. It was hard to stay focused around him. When he gets on a roll, the comedy pours out.

HAVE ANY BLOGS REALLY MADE YOU ANGRY? One site said that I had a sex tape. That one crossed the line. Other than that, it takes a lot to rattle me. But since this is Maxim, I should apologize that there isn’t a sex tape.

ANY OTHER INSTANT TURNOFFS? I’ve had guys try to pick me up in my car. No thanks. I should invest in tinted windows. As long as you love your mother and don’t fall asleep during movies, you’ve got a shot.

WILL 24 EVER MAKE IT TO THE BIG SCREEN? WE’VE BEEN HEARING RUMORS FOR YEARS. I haven’t heard much about it. I think they’re more focused on the season at hand. I’d love for my character to come back, though.
